The Lockhart Chamber of Commerce and Visitor Center ac vely promotes and supports its member businesses. We are also the primary source of tourism and visitor informa on for the friendly, enterprising and historic City of Lockhart. What’s not to love about life in the “BBQ Capital of Texas!”
Kick up your heels at the CTR Rodeo! The Chisholm Trail Rodeo continues to be a growing staple for CTR visitors! The Lockhart Chamber, along with dozens of rodeo sponsors, is proud to partner with the Diamond Cross Rodeo Company to bring a full-scale, three-night rodeo back to Lockhart. The rodeo is hosted in connection with the rest of the CTR events at Lockhart City Park, and final preparations for the arena are underway this week. The rodeo arena will over look the pond and parking area, in the “old softball field” near the pavilion “on the hill” at Lockhart City Park. In addition to prorodeo events, 20 local children each on Friday and Saturday will be invited to participate in the time-honored tradition of Mutton Bustin’, with all safety gear being provided by Dia-
mond Cross. Mutton busters should be 8 years or under by June 12, 2016, and weigh less than 60 pounds, and registration is available online at www.chisholmtrailroundup.com. On Thursday night, a charity Team Roping event will be held. In the past, the charity Team Roping events have drawn upwards of 400 teams. This year’s outing will benefit Caldwell County Flood Relief efforts. On Friday, admission for the rodeo, which will go on from 7– 9 p.m., will be $10 at the gate. Saturday’s events will run from 7 – 9 p.m., and will also be $10 at the gate. However, the free slack rodeo will take place on Saturday morning. For more details on the rodeo, visit www.chisholmtrailroundup.com.

Queen’s Court adds beauty and fun to CTR Like most small towns in Texas, we have a broad range of beautiful, talented young ladies in our community. Each year, they come together in the spirit of service and promotion – along with a little healthy competition – to raise money for the Lockhart Chamber of Commerce and vie for a spot on the CTR Queen’s Court. This year, three young ladies will compete to be the Chisholm Trail Queen, and another three are seeking the crown of Little Miss CTR. This year’s contestants are:
Sara Burrier Sara Burrier is the 16-year-old daughter of Mary Burrier, of Lockhart. She is a Junior at Lockhart High School. Sara is a member of the Lockhart 4-H Club and the LHS Choir. Take some time and explore our history! Byrd Lockhart first set foot in what was to become Caldwell County in the 1800s. Lockhart was an assistant surveyor to Green DeWitt who made his living setting boundaries throughout Central Texas. At his own expense, Lockhart built roads, and as recompense asked for land along Plum Creek. Although Lockhart lived in Gonzales, he farmed the land he was given, opening it up for other settlers. Originally a part of Gonzales County, the lack of decent roads and distance to the county seat inspired the settlers to create a separate county in 1848. The county was named for Captain Matthew Caldwell, a skilled scout and leader of a company of rangers who fought in the Battle of Plum Creek and later against Mexico. A severe drought prior to the Civil War set back many farmers returning from the War. But, where crops could not grow, cattle could graze. The first herd to take the famous Chisholm Trail to Kansas was owned by Lockhart’s J.J. Myers, and soon Lockhart became a major northward converging point for the Chisholm Trail. Later, Caldwell County soil
was found to be hospitable to cotton. After years of experimentation, Lockhart’s A.D. Mebane developed a particularly hardy strain of cotton that continues to set a worldwide standard. Oil and Texas are synonymous and Lockhart had its days as a boom town with the discovery and development of oil fields in the 1920s. Shallow field exploration continues in Caldwell County, with a major field surrounding Luling. The coming of railroads and automobiles changed the face of Lockhart, as for all of America. The Sunset rail route reached Luling in 1874, and the Missouri, Kansas, Texas arrived in Lockhart in 1885. The first automobile in Lockhart was hand built by Lockhart blacksmith Emil Seeliger. The total cost of the contraption, including the $60 worth of tubeless tires, was $125. He took the car for its first drive in 1904, attaining the speed of 15 miles per hour. The story of historic Lockhart is an ongoing tale of human endeavor, proudly nurtured by her citizens. Lockhart warmly invites you to sample its unique

Two years later, Rebecca’s father gave the couple a parcel of land on Boggy Creek as a wedding gift, and Brock built a log cabin on the site. Many of the twelve commercial buildings financed by Andrew Lee Brock remain in use today. In recent years, the Friends of the Brock Cabin have acquired funding and volunteer labor to restore this jewel in Lockhart’s history, which remains under construction at Lion’s Park, and is expected to open for public viewing later in 2015. Cemeterio Navarro Historico (100 Mulberry St.) Also known as the Mexican Cemetery, this burial ground has served the Mexican-American community of Lockhart since around 1900. The earliest dated burial here, of area settler Severiano Sanchez, dated to 1901. Since that time, the cemetery has served primarily Hispanic and Roman Catholic residents. A number of community leaders are interred here. Others, including business owners, farmers, laborers, ranchers, teachers, and veterans of foreign conflicts dating to World War I, are also buried here. Several graves are marked by Woodmen of the World monuments, which led to the burial ground also being known as the Woodmen of the World Cemetery or Paneon de los Hacheros. Other features in the cemetery include vertical stones, plot curbing and grave slabs. In 2005, descendants of the interred formed the Cemeterio Navarro Association to restore and maintain the burial ground. The association named this tie Cemeterio Navarro Historico after the noted Tejano statesman and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, Jose Antonio Navarro. The cemetery is also near the site of the old Navarro Elementary School, which was known historically as the Mexican school. Today, Cemeterio Navarro Historico continues to serve descendants of

HISTORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 27 Ebenezer Lutheran Church (291 Church St., Maxwell) In 1885 the Rev. C. Kreuzenstein conducted the first formal German Lutheran worship service in this area. On June 3, 1886, a congregation was organized with 20 charter families. In 1924, during the pastorate of the Rev. Hans Erich Krause (1887-1942), this Gothic Revival building was constructed.
First Presbyterian Church of Lockhart (120 N. Commerce St.) In 1849, Rev. N. P. Charlot appointed D. M. Morris and Col. John T. Storey as elders of first Presbyterian Church, which organized with ten members. A concrete church building was completed the next year. An 1879 cyclone destroyed that building, replaced by another in 1880 and the current sanctuary in 1914.
Emmanuel Episcopal Church (118 N. Church St.) Organized in 1853 by the Rev. Joseph wood Dunn, this parish erected its own church building in 1855-56. Bishop G. w. Freeman, who dedicated the edifice in 1857, noted its fine acoustics. It was built of an early type of concrete fashioned from caliche, gravel, and sand. The belfry was damaged by an 1879 tornado and removed, but the original stone floor remains. Stained glass windows enhance the Gothic detailing. The structure was restored in 1976.
Susanna Dickinson Hanning (308 W. San Antonio) At this site once stood the home of Susanna Dickinson Hannig (1814-1883), who came to Texas from Tennessee in 1831 with her husband Almeron Dickinson. He died at the Battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836. Susanna, with her daughter Angelina, was among the survivors. She carried news of the Alamo’s capture to Gen. Sam Houston, commander of the Texas Army.
First Christian Church of Lockhart (202 W. San Antonio) Organized in 1852 with seven members, this congregation constructed its first sanctuary in 1858. Located across the street from this site, it soon became too small for the growing membership. In 1898, this Gothic revival building was designed and built by Tom Hodges, who served as the architect on several public buildings in Lockhart.
Lockhart Vocational High School/Carver High School (1104 E. Market) Now located on private property, the “Old Carver School” was a project of The Rosenwald Foundation of Chicago, which funded many African American schools in the south in the early 20th century. The school district and local African American citizens raised the majority of the funds for its completion. In 1946, the facility changed its name to G.W. Carver High School. It closed in 1964 due to school integration.
