A Letter to Our Readers Publish a fine monthly magazine, and your time sense gets a little screwy. s I typed these words, people in Paris were traumatized by the recent surprise attacks on them, and worried about family, friends, and their future well-being.

Attacks had just occurred in Lebanon, an airliner was bombed over Egypt.

While the world was still reeling from the effects of war, many were bracing for something that could be worse.

As I overheard all of this, I heard an underlying victim mentality.

We’re victims of storms.

We’re victims of attacks.

We’re victims of a poorly run government.

We’re victims of gas prices, gas shortages, inflation, recession, taxes, wars, and more.

I’m going to say something unusual.

It may upset some people.

I’m hoping it will inspire you.

Here goes.

You have more power than you think.

While you may not want to stand in the path of war, you don’t have to cower under the bed, either.

As odd as it may sound, I believe that if enough of us think positive, we can create a counter-storm of sorts.

We can protect ourselves, and our loved ones, with our thoughts.

I’ve described and proved this with the research in the back of my book, The Attractor Factor.

More than nineteen studies proved that when a large group of people holds positive intentions, those intentions radiate out and become reality.

I asked my readers to help stop Hurricane Rita almost ten years ago.

Rita stopped.

I asked my readers to help stop the Texas wildfires several years ago.

The fires stopped.

I asked my readers to help my dying mother several years ago.

My mother is still with us.

Together, we can do something about the aftershocks of what happened in Paris, too.

I’m not saying ignore current reality.

I’m asking you to create a better reality.

I’m saying don’t get caught up in fear.

I’m asking you to come from faith.

Look – if you think an attack will get you or a loved one, then it’s already gotten you.

You’re living in fear.

Your life is dark, gloomy, and in a cage.

The media are flawless at whipping us into fear.

So I suggest ignoring the messages of mainstream media.

It’s not information – it’s propaganda.

That’s why it’s called programming.

It gets large groups of people to think negative, which of course then becomes reality.

My plea is that readers of this article (you) will stop, breathe, and focus on love – pray, or in some positive way send out an energy that will help dissolve the fear still in and around us.

I’m asking you to do this today.

Let’s create the positive future we want right now.

Let’s focus on spirit.

Let’s focus on love.

What I’m asking you to do is be happy – right now.

Smile.

Send that loving energy out in the direction of Paris, and the rest of the world.

Intend for all to be well – in reality, from a spiritual view of life, all is well.

We can make a difference.

It begins with you.

Why can’t we do the opposite?

Why can’t we get large groups of people to think positive?

Yes, be sure you take care of yourself and your family.

Yes, contribute to any causes you believe in that help people who need it right now.

But also check the storehouse in your mind.

Are you living in fear, or living in trust?

Are you coming from fear, or faith?

Are you focused on the negative, or are you doing something to create a positive?

We are always at choice.

Another year winding down,

another Winter Solstice, another celebration of an event that occurred a couple of millennia ago when a man seen as a messiah by three of the world’s major religions arrived on the planet, in a part of the world that was also the birthplace of those religions.

The messiah’s message, at its core, was a simple one – love your neighbor as yourself. Granted, there’s some wiggle room there if you don’t have real high opinion of yourself, but the intent seemed to be to conduct yourself in a peaceable manner towards others.

Things, however, haven’t been that peaceable in the Middle East since, umm, since – well, not sure what the records have to say about that.

History doesn’t seem to have recorded many Golden Ages of Peace in the cradle of civilization (or in many of its branch locations since it climbed out of the cradle, for that matter) and not a lot of progress has been made in that direction as the year winds down.

Egypt, Lebanon, Paris – it’s tempting to go on a rant about the stupidity of killing for religion, but those perpetrators didn’t do what they did to spread a religion.

They did it because they’re ******* terrorists.

If you want a good rant, John Oliver had a great one in his HBO show the Sunday after Paris. It pretty much consisted of variations on a theme of “f-----g a------s” (as only a Brit can deliver the phrase), pointing out that anyone who thought they could wage a war of culture and lifestyle with the French were – well, see “variations on a theme” above.

Might not be real spiritual or metaphysical, and definitely not recommended in every environment, but a good string of expletives ain’t a bad way to deal with pain and fear by letting off some steam. Righteous anger, self-defense instructors will tell you, is also a good way to deal with immediate attack, and might just rally your resources long enough to save your life.

It’s a tricky thing, though.

The key word there is immediate. Anger is a two-edged sword that can bite you on the return, especially if you

succumb to its power and keep carrying it around, ready to haul it out and inflict it on anyone who disagrees with you.

Civil public discourse seems to have become as quaint as bustles, afternoon tea, and handwritten letters to your friends sealed with sealing wax. Go online and read a few comments on just about anything if you don’t think mindlessly (and sometimes nonsensically) going off on someone who dares to disagree with you is a go-to strategy.

Unless you’re safe behind your pulpit preaching to the choir and posting cat pictures, social media has become an oxymoron – and if you’re sort of a recent and reluctant convert, you might find that out by, say, posting a well-meaning little snippet on a congressperson’s Farcebook page about how the reason for genetically modifying most crops is to be able to put more poison on them.

Hooboy.

Pesticides and herbicides are mother’s milk compared to the surprising venom spewed over that post, running the gamut of cleverness from hahahahaha! to Why do you lie? (Who knew there were that many folks willing to take a break from Wheel of Fortune reruns on cable stolen from their neighbors in the trailer park to comment on issues of the day?)

There are a lot of lines to be crossed between sport arguing and strapping on a vest full of explosives, but neither does much for the collective consciousness. If you need to sling out a few colorful phrases when you hit your thumb with a hammer, go for it, but when you start wanting to take a hammer to everyone who disagrees with you to discourage anyone from disagreeing with you – well, you might not be a redneck. You might just be a teenie-weenie little terrorist.

Anger is easy, but peace takes some work – and practice makes perfect.

GIVE THE GIFT That keeps on receiving The Heartwaker’s Club, with Zaeli During the season of Christmas, Hanukah, and charity, much emphasis is put on the wonderful gesture of giving.

Indeed, we need to practice generosity in our society and our relationships, but – believe it or not – it doesn’t have to be forced. Generosity occurs naturally when two truths are understood: t 0VS XFMGBSF JT JOUFSDPOOFDUFE We cannot know true joy while people in our homes and communities suffer. t 5IF IPMJFTU BDU JT OPU UP HJWF CVU to exchange. To share. To allow riches, whether material or emotional, to flow freely where they are most needed and best applied.

This second truth asks that we practice not just the art of giving, but of receiving. After all, what good is a gift that goes unreceived? Yet we’re often suckered by a stigma against “neediness� and a glorification of supposed self-sufficiency.

In truth, playing martyr or saint only causes an energetic traffic jam.

Autonomy is a fantasy of the ego.

When attempted, heroic self-denial is more likely to cause problems than it is to curb them. It robs loved ones of their greatest joy, which is to feel their contributions are of value.

Not to mention, when you don’t allow a true need to be met, that suppressed appetite pops up in other forms that will always seek (but never succeed) to compensate.

This is how vices are born.

The antidote is to believe you’re worthy of fulfillment, and trust in abundance. Please note – this is very different from believing in limitless resources. It is not permission to take thoughtlessly from your lover, or anyone, or the Earth itself.

What it means is the Universe’s inventory corresponds perfectly to the actual needs of every being, if only we’d acknowledge those needs and allow them to be met. This requires tuning deeply into ourselves, dismantling the shame assigned by a society that would rather we buy its products than seek fulfillment through connection and pleasure.

It takes a while to overcome the mindset that receiving signals weakness – but what better time than the holidays to take little steps toward freer exchange? This month, try these simple changes: t "DDFQU DPNQMJNFOUT Though deflecting them is considered common etiquette, practice receiving appreciation with one of these replies: “Thank you.� “It means so much to me that you’d say that.� “I consider that a very high compliment.� “Wow, that’s exactly the effect I hoped to have.�

t "TL GPS IFMQ Think first about what you truly need, and who is the right person to ask. There is no net accomplishment to be gained by forgoing a nap only to be cranky with the kids, or single-handedly hosting a party you’re too stressed to enjoy. t #F GVMMZ QSFTFOU If your body is truly longing for a long, hot shower, then take that shower and deeply enjoy it. Feel every drop as a gift. Do not obsess in guilty thoughts as you “waste� water or time. Know that by meeting this actual need, you will not displace it into some other desire that will upset life’s balance. t %FDMBSF ZPVS HSBUJUVEF You have a choice – the feeling of indebtedness can trigger anxiety, or it can create a bond between giver and receiver that fortifies the relationship. Take a moment to survey the many ways your partner and others are generous, and allow yourself to revel in thanks. You’ll probably find that doing so turns effortlessly into your own acts of spontaneous generosity. t 4BZ OP UIBOL ZPV There are times when wellintentioned people actually burden others with what they think is a gift. If explaining this would cause them more pain than your inconvenience in saying nothing, feel free to let it slide. But otherwise, gently, graciously educate them about what are and aren’t your wants and needs.

We’re all givers and receivers.

And thank goodness for that. Let’s end the myth that one is better than the other, and allow love and all its gifts to circulate year-round.

MONEY Is it your Friend?

by Beverley Biehl A friend was excitedly showing off his new tattoo, an amazing piece with personal meaning and spiritual significance to him. He glowed with pride sharing how much it meant to him – and instantly shifted into shame once money was mentioned.

“I know I shouldn’t have spent so much on this. I’m no good with money. I hate it!”

That shocked and saddened me. We’d just finished discussing the challenge of finding a really good, trustworthy friend. The way he described previous relationships with people was very similar to how he talked about money. It made me stop and think about my own friendship with finances.

Growing up, I learned money is the root of all evil, and doesn’t grow on trees (which was OK, because that meant you were closer to God). It took a long time to let go of those patterns – but new levels of childhood programming might still show up again.

Maybe that’s why that conversation made me wonder – am I truly friends with Money? While we had a rocky beginning, we now have a deep understanding, and, for the most part, are great buddies.

Here are a few tips that clarified our relationship: t %P * LOPX .POFZ I grew up knowing Money seemed to prefer other people’s homes. Even though my mom made the best homemade bread and we were really fun people who played card games and had great conversations, we never talked about Money. It was almost a taboo subject, like the neighbor girl who went on “vacation” for nine months. How awful would that be if you were Money? Credit cards, who seemed so friendly and inviting, became draconian overlords at the end of the month. Cash in my hand became a pecking bird, bloodying me until I got rid of it on frivolous trinkets and soulless foods. I cursed cash, giving it power to determine my self-worth. If I didn’t have Money, I was worthless. Now, Money’s my sidekick, not my definer.

Like any partnership, there needs to be trust. Money won’t leave you for someone else – trust, and breathe. t %P * SFTQFDU .POFZ Money can be like an impulsive teenager, jumping out of your wallet to buy the latest fashion or new tech gadget. When the latest BSO (Bright Shiny Object) begins to scream for attention, wait a day to think about it, unless you’re on vacation and can’t return later. If it’s worth giving up something else, go back and get it. On vacation? Future-pace the purchase. Imagine introducing it to your room and your friends – does it still make sense? You might still end up with some crazy things that totally made sense at the time, but the stories will be priceless!

In many ways, Money is a faithful dog waiting for you at the end of a long day.

It’s happy to see you, even if you’ve kicked it around and ignored it. Love it, feed it, play with it, exercise it. It will love and protect you – even if it looks like it’s run away, it’ll find its way back. Just be responsible. Clean up any mess it makes, keep the gate closed, and always use a leash when taking it for a stroll, so it doesn’t scare the neighbors.

Quantum physics has demonstrated something mystics and healers already knew â&#x20AC;&#x201C; matter is energy, vibrating at different frequencies. Cultivating your Soul Garden

by Christina Allen Each of us was born into this world with a signature energetic pattern, or map, that we’re using to learn and evolve. Our astrological charts, the exact positioning of the planets and asteroids at the moment of our birth, and our souls with their imprints, or unresolved past events, act as an invisible skeleton upon which we build our life experiences.

What we build, however, is based on how we perceive.

As human beings, we use the five senses and intuition to measure what’s happening around us, and then filter that through the mind to build perceptions about the world. We’re initially unconscious of the soul maps we brought in with us, and see things as just happening to us at random. We believe ourselves to be victims of circumstance, and blame others for our discomfort.

In this world of blame and shame, we cultivate fear, anger and resentments, and then continue to generate similar experiences. As a person becomes more conscious, however, they will start to recognize that their interpretation of these circumstances determines what they will experience.

One way to look at is to think of the world as a giant hologram. A hologram is a three-dimensional construct of an image that can only be seen when illuminated by a coherent light source. Until the construct is illuminated, it’s invisible.

Our soul maps lay dormant within us, similarly, waiting for us to bring them to light.

Remember the holodecks from the old Star Trek shows, virtual realities you could step into to have a specific experience?

Our lives are holodecks of our own making, realities that reflect back to us what we’ve chosen to grow by. These worlds are not static, however – our reactions create what we experience next.

If we’re trapped in fear and worry, for example, that resonance creates a fearful world for us to bump into. When we can’t get up above the immediate situation and glimpse at the map that’s creating this story, we stay entangled in the details of it. The stage is already set – but we have a choice about how we engage with what’s on it.

By removing unresolved imprints and asking, instead, what am I to learn from this scenario, we can change our experience from one that is perpetually reactionary and fearbased to one that consciously inspires growth.

In the high Andes, corn is a highly prized commodity.

To use an agricultural metaphor, we have each come in with a plot of land and a set of seeds, to do with as we may.

Our astrological charts act as the soil we’ve chosen to work with in this lifetime. Our souls act as the kernels of corn we brought in with us to grow from.

As we plant these ancient blueprints into this new soil, and activate the imprints that keep us stuck, we generate experiences that will teach and push us forward into new territory.

One of the most fundamental teachings of the indigenous shamanic cultures is that we’re all dreaming our worlds into being. This means we’re not just weeding a garden of undesired emotions, but creating whole new realities. As we take responsibility for these myths we’re creating, we can choose what it is we truly want to cultivate in our gardens (or holodecks) this lifetime.

Yes, we have this soil, and we have these seeds. Now what are we going to do with them?

You’ll miss it if it’s gone

by Rama Chittajallu Do you have gallstones, or seem prone to them? Physicians will say you don’t need your gall bladder – but why have a useless organ in your body?

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ that collects and stores bile produced by the liver. When you eat fatty foods, the gallbladder releases that bile to help break down the fats. With no gallbladder, you’ll have trouble with fatty foods (although this could be managed, to a degree, by taking digestive enzymes).

No gallbladder, and bile pours continuously into the small intestine even when there’s no food, causing irritation and creating intestinal distress like diarrhea and bloating.

Consider another option.

There’s one that makes much more sense, costs much less money, creates much less trauma to the body, and has none of the complications of a surgical assault on the body.

First, recognize early warning signs of gallbladder trouble.

The first dead giveaway? Nausea and abdominal discomfort after eating foods heavy in fat – the light bulb should go on immediately.

Head to your nearest acupuncturist, herbalist, or naturopath. The corrective process is simple, extremely effective, and you probably won’t have trouble with your gallbladder again as long as you live.

If you don’t take action, the next level is pain, although not a full-blown gallstone attack. (That is tremendous pain.) Even at level two, surgery can be avoided by heading to your nearest holistic practitioner. A few hardy souls have taken care of fullblown gallstone attacks with home remedies, but they had great tolerance to pain.

Gallbladder stones are present in everybody.

The older you get, the greater chances are of accumulating them. Drink more water, eat less fatty foods, and learn to clean your liver and gall bladder periodically – just like you clean your home.

The time of year from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, with all its holiday dinners and parties full of rich, fatty foods and celebratory beverages, can be stressful for your poor gallbladder and liver, paired meridians that exchange energy.

What does menopause mean to women?

Although almost every woman learned about her menstrual cycle from other women in her life or in health class, menopause is rarely discussed even among the closest friends.

With over 25 million search results for Symptoms of Menopause in Google, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s clear that most women seek information about menopause on the internet before turning to a doctor for confirmation.

For many women, the traits of menopause come as a gradual onset of slight body changes. Other women experience menopause like the last scene of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, with brilliant hot flashes or night sweats.

Unknown menopause symptoms.

The most common signs reported by women in perimenopause (pre-menopause) are night sweats and hot flashes, but other physical warning signs can be hard to connect to menopause because most women experience these maladies throughout their lifetime.

Some of the unknown menopause indicators include: t 'BUJHVF As mothers, wives, and professionals, all women know fatigue as their close companion every day, but the fatigue that comes with menopause is sometimes accompanied by a depression that makes the simple act of getting out of bed too much to accomplish. by Michael Abedin Bacteria, fungus, parasites – all the critters living in your mouth celebrate the holidays right along with you. Shopping.

Parties. Breathing airplane air. Visiting relatives. They love every minute of it, because they’ll run into millions of their friends.

They love hanging out while you eat and drink way too much unhealthy stuff you normally pass up (especially sugar, their drug of choice). When you drive yourself completely crazy trying to be everywhere at once and have a good time doing it – well, all that stress is like going to Burning Man for them.

They particularly love living in Austin, aka the Live Allergy Capital of the World. From November through January, homegrown mold and pollen team up with strange out-oftown allergens blowing into town, keeping your immune system busy defending and repairing your respiratory system – meaning the immune system cops aren’t as likely to show up at their little party in your pie hole.

Ramp up your brushing and flossing, of course. (Rinse, swish, and spit first if you just had a piece of fruitcake and some coffee, so you’re not moving sticky debris, acids, and sugar around, rubbing them into your gums and choppers).

Do your oil pulling, take your supplements, all that there – but the old adage that you can run but you can’t hide doesn’t apply to these guys.

Ahh, Austin. We’re gonna miss you when you’re gone.

You’re vanishing fast, but there are still a few outposts scattered here and there – and a lot of them, of course, are south of the river.

South 1st Street is tucked between the condo canyons of S. Lamar and the carefully cultivated funkiness of S. Congress, like a band of Indians surrounded by wagon trains. It’s got your Mexican food, your vintage boots and shoe repair, your herberias and coffee shops – and its capital, in the 2200 block, is Slackerville.

The elders around the fire tell the story that Slackerville was founded by a robot on a motorcycle in 1979, sort of the peak of Austin culture not long before Austin’s version of the comet that killed off the dinosaurs – the legendary Closing of the Armadillo. Whatever its origins, it’s now a loose collective of studios and shops, including End of an Ear record shop and Amelia’s Retro-Vogue and Relics – and, behind them, Road Side Rose Trading Co. Road Side Rose is a cozy treasure chest of a shop carrying carefully chosen work from artists from around the world, including clothing, handmade jewelry – and woven songs from deep in the Amazon.

Spirit songs.

The Shipibo are an indigenous tribe in Peru’s Amazon basin, their spirits interwoven with the spirits of the plants, animals, and landscape surrounding them. Everyone needs to have a little bit of savings. For now the answer is to keep it and make it grow to approximately $5,000. When you get $5,000, give $3,000 to a money manager. The money manager might put it in a small stock and within six weeks you could have $20,000. Take half of it and have them reinvest with the other half.

Letting Go

by Deborah Antich Much of what I’ve written this year is about letting go – putting your money where your mouth is, leaving the sandbox, taking leaps. So, here’s my contribution.

The Traveling Psychic Supper Club is dead.

Yep, time to let it go. Been fun, great run, ready to move on – and it’s ready to let go. It had started to hold me back.

My baby had become my burden.

Do you have a baby that’s a burden – an idea, a job, a skill that’s served you, but has simply, unquestionably, run its course? Still holding onto it as the end-all, be-all, or are you ready to let it be what it naturally is, a step on a course, a part of your evolution into the next phase of who you are?

When I first started thinking about letting go, fear washed in. It had become so much a part of me, this organization, this brand, a radio show, an amazing group of people bonded together by this one – entity. (Because it really did take on a life of its own.)

And it was a good life.

It was an exciting experience, it gave us the wings to no longer talk about “those experiences” in hushed tones, hoping no one else would overhear in a crowded restaurant – but to encourage those conversations, lead them, and help others accept them as their own. But after a while, after a wonderful ride, I became less excited, felt pulled to other ideas, theories that built on that foundation, but expanded up and onward.

The word psychic never felt like the best fit, but it was a word people understood, for the most part – but this little seven-letter word is loaded. Moving forward, it’s not exactly right. What’s right has evolved, pieces are falling into place, and it’s good, the next step.

So this is the last month for the Supper Club ad, smiling from the page – but get ready for something new.
