LETTER f r o m t h e EDITOR Whew, it’s hot out there! But, the waters of Lake Gaston will definitely cool you off. So, take a dip, just like Aydan Blakeley did. He is featured on the cover this month for Lake the Magazine.

For June’s edition, staff writer Roger Bell caught up with a Lake Gaston resident, Thomas Van Petten. He has had a long and interesting life. Read all about how he ended up at the lake and how he became involved with the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

Another group that plays a big part at the lake is the Lake Gaston Association. Read staff writer Carolyn Harmon’s story about the many things this organization is involved in and maybe you would like to get involved, too.

Then there are our columnists: Carol Moseley, Christina Wells and Ryan Grimm.

For June, Moseley gives advice on perennials, the “main stays of our gardens.” These are the plants you plant once and they return every year. She talks about the varieties she likes and also lets you know your garden tasks for June.

Wells wants everyone to know about the 50th anniversary of the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber. The chamber is kicking off this celebration by expanding its Battle of the BBQ into the inaugural Lizard Creek Jam & BBQ Battle at Lake Gaston. It’s been a long road for Thomas Van Petten to settle in Lake Gaston.

Van Petten, 86, grew up in Maryland and saw the area around himself explode with activity when war broke out.

“We lived near Aberdeen, which was a small military base,” Van Petten said. “And it just blew up during World War II.” Van Petten’s father, who worked in engineering, worked for the government during this period, and when Van Petten was a junior in high school, the family moved to Taneytown.

After graduating from high school, Van Petten found out the hard way he wasn’t college material, at least at that age.

“I went to Mount St. Mar y’s for one semester,” Van Petten said. “It was disastrous. I only got nine out of 15 credits. When the semester was over, they recommended that I not come back.”

He took a job at a shoe factor y for three years before joining the U.S. Navy in 1951.

“I wanted to work with airplanes,” Van Petten said. “The training in the military is free.”

He initially went to sign up for the Air Force, but since the recruiter for the branch wasn’t present, Va Petten was served by the Navy recruiter, who signed him up after guaranteeing he would be working in Naval aviation. Following boot camp, his superiors tried to send him somewhere else, and he pulled out a copy of his written promise to be going into aviation.

He was assigned to a school to lear n overhauling airplanes, and he learned to be a structural mechanic — known as an AM in militar y parlance — and he was, at his request, placed on the flight line, preparing planes for flights.

“Most of the mechanics on the flight line were engine mechanics,” Van Petten said. “I was the only AM on the flight line.”

Jeff Dowhan was busy getting ready for about 77 seventh-grade students to visit Edward Beach at Lake Gaston on May 10.

Dowhan is the Lake Gaston Association education committee chairman. The students were coming from James S. Russell Middle School in Brunswick County, Virginia. Carlette Williams is their Life Science teacher. She brought her students to the lake for a Lakeside Learning Day, for lessons that align with the district’s standards of learning, she said.

“The purpose of the trip is for students to have a first-hand experience dealing with organisms, water characteristics, natural energy processes and the human watershed systems,” she said. “This first-hand experience is an exciting opportunity for them to learn, as some students have never seen a beach.”

Dowhan said a number of years ago, some volunteers from the Lake Gaston Association spoke to various school administrators about bringing some of the lake resources into the schools in the five counties bordering the lake.

“One of the responses we heard from multiple sources was the students need exposure to things beyond their backyard,” he said.

As a result, some lake association members put together a couple programs a few years ago.

One is a Lakeside Learning Day to teach the students about the local lake, its wildlife and when and why the dam was built. The program is combined with the school’s common core curriculum, Dowhan said. The association has been averaging about three learning days a year. Last month it hosted Gaston Middle School in Northampton County and William R. Davie in Halifax, North Carolina.

State biology graduate students Erika Hauge and Kara Foley; and John John Dyckman, Coast Guard Auxillary, vice-commander at Lake Gaston, teaches water safety to Solomon Russell Middle School seventh-grade students at Edward Beach.

The Lake Gaston Association is a volunteer, nonprofit citizens’ organization that was conceived in 1988. It actively advocates and promotes the interests of households and businesses who own property in the two states and five counties of Lake Gaston: Halifax, Northampton and Warren in North Carolina and Br unswick and Mecklenburg in Virginia. Each of the five counties surrounding Lake Gaston has four volunteer director positions on the association board, plus one at-large position for a total of 25 directors.

bers. With about 10,000 people living on or around the lake, the membership represents about a quarter of that population.

Bill Heflin, former association president, said the association members address all concerns of the people who live at the lake.

In addition to the education committee, some other committees include environmental, safety, government relations and marketing and membership.

Members are free to attend the monthly meetings that feature guest speakers.

“The biggest one we had was two years ago in February, when we had a lot of flooding,” Heflin said. “Dominion Energy and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and about 250 people attended. It was standing room only.”

The association has also hosted meetings for citizens to meet candidates running for various offices.

Croatia’s history is full of foreign occupation and rule, bloodshed, war and political unrest. That being said, I can think of no other country that welcomed me the way they did, with warm, open arms. Every country has something that makes it special.

Italy is rustic, France has charm, Germany has warm friendly people, and Montenegro has pirates. Croatia, has all of it, along with volcanoes, hospitality and King’s Landing. It would be so easy to do an entire series of articles on this one country.

C U L I N A R Y T R AV E L S The first inhabitants of Croatia are reportedly from the mid-Paleolithic age. Beginning in 9A.D., it has been ruled, invaded or occupied by the Romans, Venetians, Ottomans, Serbians, Italians and Napoleon. In 1918, Croatia decided to join a kingdom made up of Croats, Slovenes and Serbs. Although it also lost some of its identity in the process, this effectively saved the country from Italian invasion. Unfortunately, the newly founded Yugoslavia was not the parricide the Croats were looking for. In 1991, Croatia began a war campaign for independence. Croatia, in its current form, has been around for less than 30 years.

One positive aspect of all the different peoples that have passed through the countr y is the culinar y imprints they have left behind. Croatia is one countr y, with many regional cuisines. The coastline is full of Mediterranean and Italian influence. Inland there is a lot of influence from Germany, Hungary and Serbia with lots of game and hear ty produce found in forests. Some exceptional culinary products of this countr y are white truffles from Istrian, cheese from Hvar, prosciutto from Dalmatia, olive oil from the island of Pag, wine from one of five viticulture zones, and Rakija from anywhere in the country. Croatian hospitality starts with a shot of Rakija, followed by many more. After getting off the plane in Zadar, our first interaction with a Croatian was our landlord pouring a round a locally produced Rakija and passing the glasses around. This took place before we were even able to introduce ourselves.

This strong beverage will knock you off your feet the first time you have it. Often made out of grapes or plums, Rakija can be distilled from just about anything and is not only the drink of choice in Croatia, but its surrounding neighbors. The food is fantastic and is made of simple, local ingredients. It is still common practice to buy food at a farmers market or an open fish market as opposed to a grocery store. Along with the open markets, if you look close enough, you can find stores where you can buy liquors, wine and olive oils by the milliliter. One of the popular cooking methods in Croatia is peka. Imagine if

The octopus peka in Split is supposed to be some of the best in the country. While this dish is found all throughout Croatia, it is seen most prevalently on the coast.

Restaurants and households alike are full of fresh local seafood. The fish, octopus, oysters and other shellfish are on point with anything you would get from Italy or France and often times, it’s better. Cevapi is a locally produced sausage that is found throughout the country, filled with herbs, spices and paprika, often served with local bread. Lamb on a spit is another common sight to see as you’re walking around the countryside of Croatia and Montenegro. Another popular dish in Croatia is a simple mixed meat platter. It’s exactly as it sounds — a plate full of various grilled, braised and roasted meats. It is generally served with grilled vegetables, cheese and dipping sauce.

It is June. The kids are getting out of school. The days are getting longer and hotter. The waters of Lake Gaston are warming up and beckoning you to play. Soon we will officially welcome the summer season.

I am excited. After celebrating the 25th anniversar y of the Lake Gaston Battle of the BBQ last year, the board and staff of the Lake Gaston Regional Chamber decided to retool and expand the event into a summer kick-off festival to celebrate our chamber’s 50th anniversary.

The inaugural Lizard Creek Jam & BBQ Battle at Lake Gaston will take place on Saturday, June 23, the first Saturday after the official first day of Summer.

Lizard Creek Jam & BBQ Battle will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on the festival grounds of the Lake Gaston Lions Club (home of the Seafood Festival) at 139 Stanley Road in Henrico, North Carolina, with Jimmy Buffet tribute band Island Time playing your favorite Buffet, beach and rock tunes. Admission to the event is completely free. Bring your comfy lawn chair, but no outside food or beverages are permitted.

In addition to four hours of fantastic music that will bring Margaritaville right here to Lake Gaston, you will enjoy the best that festivals have to offer. With proper ID, the Lake Gaston Lions Club will be manning a cash bar. Water, soft drinks and iced tea will be sold. There will be tons of summertime fun for all ages including a Classic Car CruiseIn featuring the Stray Cats Hot Rod Association, a giant trampoline for bouncing and flipping, cornhole, carnival games, dancing, a Lake Gaston gear fashion show, scrap art, and much, much more!

Hungry? The BBQ Battle is still a major part of this event. Twenty top competitors will vie for the culinar y, showmanship and taster’s choice titles. Our cook-off is part of the North Carolina Pork Council officially sanctioned Whole Hog BBQ Series, so these cooking teams are some of the best in the business. Awards will be presented at the start of the festival just after 5 p.m. This award-winning barbecue will be sold by the plate with baked beans, coleslaw and a roll or by the pound for $8 each or two for $15, eat in or take out. You can also buy a Family Pig Pickin’ Pack with two pounds of barbecue, a pound each of baked beans and coleslaw, a 2-liter soft drink and four souvenir stadium

cups for $25. These food tickets can be purchased on site.

Turtle Creek at Lake Gaston will have its delicious line of jalapeno jellies, including very hot, hot, mild, peach and strawberry. The Lake Gaston Lion’s Club will also be serving its gigantic and tasty funnel cakes. Lake Gaston Stuff will have its products for sale, such as T-shirts, tanks, hoodies, hats and more with the 35 Mile of Paradise logo.

Summer camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily, July 31 through Aug. 3, at Sylvan Heights Bird Park, 500 Sylvan Heights Parkway in Scotland Neck, North Carolina. Campers will have a chance to focus on specific areas of interest while making new friends.
