A Letter to Our Readers Due to a grievous bit of careless proofreading, a large chunk of text was left out of this space in last month’s issue, resulting in the wrong punch line being included for a truly rib-ticking metaphysical joke – an error of significant proportions, considering how few metaphysical jokes there are. (Actually, it was an alternative punch line, one that had been used before.) In the interest of the high level of journalistic integrity that’s been the hallmark of this fine natural publication, nothing less will do but to print the correct text. Ready? Here we go.

The Courage to be Disliked
By Dr. Joe Vitale
B
Freud and Adler did not agree and went separate ways. I’m currently collecting and reading Adler’s works, such as Understanding Human Nature (1927) and The Science of Living (1929). While I’m digging into the original words of Adler, I find The Courage To Be Disliked an easier approach to understanding him. Here’s why… The Courage to Be Disliked is a refreshing stir for selfcourage. Rather than giving away your power to circumstances, you use your power for choice. The book explains etiology, which is the idea of cause and effect, versus teleology, the idea of meaning and choice.
We cannot think, feel, will, or act without the perception of some goal.
ack in April, I was lucky enough to be given an advanced prepublication review copy of The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga (Atria Books, May 2018 release). I say “lucky” because the book changed my life. I had never heard of it before. But the book is a runaway bestseller in Japan. It sold 3.5 million copies in Asia. A million copies sold of any book is miraculous. Over three million copies sold in Japan alone is staggering. The book is a dialogue between a student and a philosopher. The chapters are short. The messages are potent. Most of the material stems from the work of psychologist Alfred Adler. As much as I’ve read in psychology, I wasn’t familiar with Adler.
– Alfred Adler
I am now.
Adler (1870-1937) was an Austrian physician, psychotherapist, and the founder of Adlerian psychology, sometimes called Individual Psychology. Around 1907 Adler and Freud, along with Rudolf Reitler and Wilhelm Stekel, began meeting weekly in a type of early mastermind. Their “Wednesday Night Meetings” eventually grew into the birth of the psychoanalytic movement.
6
We are not determined by our experiences, but are self-determined by the meaning we give to them… – Alfred Adler
In other words, many schools of thought (including Freud’s) say you are the product of your past and/or your environment. That is cause and effect thinking, or etiology. But Adler’s approach is to say you can create your life from new meaning and choice, which is teleology. Obviously, the latter is more empowering and freeing. The latter doesn’t need anything outside of you to change for you to change.
At first glance, the concepts in The Courage to Be Disliked could seem daunting and unrealistic.
But as I kept reading the book, and following the concepts being explained, I realized that this book is a manual for awakening. There are too many concepts to repeat here, but one crucial one is this – All problems are interpersonal relationship problems. Let that sink in. “All problems are interpersonal relationship problems.” The idea, simplified, is that you may sometimes try to please others, which is giving away your power to others. You can’t easily be happy if you are waiting on another’s approval. When you choose yourself, you are free. You may be disliked – but you are free.
But here’s an even deeper insight…
An advanced insight is this – you have an interpersonal problem with someone in order to justify something you don’t want to do. In short, you created the need for an excuse and then created the interpersonal problem to rationalize the excuse. The problem or person didn’t come first – your need for a way out did. This is similar to my own observation, The meaning you give an event is the belief that attracted it. You don’t realize it, but it’s actually you – and your meaning and beliefs – creating your life. This completely transforms the idea of problems with other people. You created them! The Courage To Be Disliked explains all of this, and more, in an easy to read style. It’s simply a conversation. But “the student” is asking what you would probably ask. And “the philosopher” is responding as might Socrates, or Adler himself. Along the way, you get aha moments of insights. For example, learning to separate tasks is important. That means learning to understand what is under your task to do, and what is for others to do. Wanting someone to like you isn’t your task. It’s theirs. Wanting a child to clean his or her room isn’t your task. It’s the child’s. Wanting to be recognized for success isn’t your task. It’s the public’s.
Knowing this task separation gives you freedom.
I’ve often referred to people trying to give me their task as them trying to give me their monkey. They don’t want to care for “the monkey” so they try to pass it off to me. But I have enough monkeys. Knowing that I don’t want another monkey, and that their task isn’t mine to do, makes it easier for me to have a boundary and maintain it for my own self-care. As a result, I can be free. Here’s a recent example. Jaime Vendera is a vocal coach. A terrific one. He’s written Raise Your Voice and The Ultimate Breathing Workout. He’s helped lots of singers, including me. He wrote to me one day saying he had an idea for a book I could write. He suggested it could be about mindset for musicians. While I liked the idea, I sensed he was passing a monkey to me. So I wrote back, saying it was his idea, or his task, so he should write it. To my surprise, and his credit, he took the challenge. He completely wrote the book, showed it to me, and I added some content, and a subtitle to it. We are now coauthors of the book Mind Over Music: Break Through the Blocks to Get Into the Studio and Onto the Stage. (It’ll be out soon.) Instead of my taking on his task, I simply kept my boundary and supported him. The result was a win-win for both of us.
Do you see how this works?
The Courage to Be Disliked contains far more wisdom, theory, and technique than I could possibly relay in this article. But I don’t want you to settle for this post. I want you to read the book. Whether you do or not, of course, is your task, not mine. The Courage To Be Disliked is in bookstores, and in print, Kindle, or audio at Amazon.com. Joe Vitale’s latest book, Anything is Possible, is now available on Amazon in paperback or for any Kindle reader at www.amazon.com/dp/1984128159/

You can change with a decision. The Adler way is not one of victimhood but of empowerment. For example, rather than saying you are the way you are due to the circumstances of your childhood, or current circumstances, you instead choose to create how you want to be, from goals selected out of this moment. The past has no hold over you. Environment has no hold over you. Others have no hold over you.

Chill It’s segue time.
Volcanoes, political insanity, kids
And birthday time. Following the Chinese tradition of your entrance into the world being your first birthday, this is the beginning of the thirteenth year of Austin All Natural as Austin’s only homegrown natural publication, an excellent time to reflect on what it takes to crank this thing out once a month for over one hundred forty-four some odd months. Some very odd months, often as not. There’s one thing you need to learn to do when deadlines are looming and clients’ material is still floating around somewhere, waiting for a left-brain landing place. You need to learn to follow the example of Bruce Lee in Enter the Dragon. Trapped in a pit with no apparent escape, you need to cross your legs in a meditation position, drape your nunchakus over your neck, and wait patiently.
being shot in schools by other kids. Bad craziness, as the good Dr. Gonzo used to say. There are a lot of ways to handle craziness of cosmic proportions. The goto method is to blame it on some sort of astrological influence. May, it’s said, offered an opportunity to lay it at the feet of Uranus in Taurus, or some such. (Yeah, yeah. Don’t go there.) Another easy (but lesser used) scapegoat is to blame it on being abducted by aliens – tempting, if you find yourself, say, stranded on the side of I-35 after your alternator goes out near Abbot, Texas, hometown of Willie Nelson, and you spend the better part of nine hours waiting for your insurance company’s roadside assistance subcontractor to show up with a tow truck.
Off the road again.
There’s a precedent for suspecting aliens, first proposed in Austin’s daily newspaper in an excellent humor column by Mike Kelley, ever so many years ago. One sign you’d been abducted by aliens, he reported, was gaps in your short-term memory. He was pretty sure it had happened to him, since every time he drove from Austin to Dallas he could never remember if he’d been through Waco yet. Think about it – it’s happened to you, hasn’t it? Abbot, of course, is just north of Waco, well within the alien abduction zone. If the guy your insurance company finally sends (after half a dozen phone calls, and as many hours watching your phone lose juice) has tattooed eyelids – well, you don’t need Alex Jones to tell you something’s wrong – do you? It would, btw, be irresponsible to print the name of the insurance company whose subs left you hanging, but suffice to say it sorta rhymes with Snake Farm. Oh, and Willie was on the cover of the very first issue of Austin All Natural in June 2006, meaning…

You Got to Chill.
It’s an art, reflected in June’s original cover piece by Austin muralist J Muzacz, his second cover. What better way to chill in the first month of an Austin summer than to settle back with an armadillo, a few bats, and a frosty beverage made from the distilled essence of the agave plant. All natural, indeed. The model for Muzacz’s painting is artist Sylvia Orozco, co-founder and director of Austin’s Mexic-Arte museum, one of the few Mexican art museums in the country. Like any good work of art, it has a backstory.
It’s a mystery.
Sylvia hung in a Mexican restaurant on South Lamar, in the upscale retail and residential center that once held a motley collection of funky south Austin thrift shops, bookstores, and music stores before becoming Beverly Hills 78704. When the restaurant changed hands, the painting disappeared. There’s a metaphor in there somewhere for a disappearing Austin, but what the heck. Not much to be done about that at this point, so grab an armadillo, hang with a bat, have another fine agave beverage. Chill.
RENEGADE OF LIGHT by Dennis Higgins
A
malevolent extraterrestrial race has molded human creation in their likeness, keeping humanity in a paradigm of chaos and fear. Other highly enlightened extraterrestrials, however, are guiding humanity into a new paradigm, the original intention of the creators of the human race – bliss, harmony, oneness with the universal creator. It’s a film delving into the very core of the shocking, esoteric history of humanity, hidden by its oppressors. It’s not for the faint of heart.
The story.
Free-spirited Danny Phelps is having the time of his life as an Austin police detective – good-looking, no attachments, witty, a confident and charming smartass making great money ripping off criminals and hanging out with his Jamaican partner, Chaz Dawg, drinking at strip clubs and shooting pool at Phelps’ gorgeous Lake Travis house Little does he know his higher self is reaching out to him with his destiny, which he refuses to accept. Phelps’ soul is a character in the film, invisible to anyone but him and viewers. His Alter Ego, indifferent to money or power, emerges as a homeless man, a businessman, a bar back, a sign spinner. Although Phelps embodies symbols of fear – badge, weapons, sirens – he dives into action to help fellow officers, or find the truth in missing children’s cases. Phelps and Chaz, working together to solve crimes, are also partners in crimes, one of which goes terribly wrong. The aftermath takes Phelps to the edges of his conscience and his darker hours. His Astral Body travels into the woods to find a piece of evidence he submits to a forensic DNA specialist for, which suggests metamorphoses. Talking with an exotic dancer about love, Phelps suddenly finds himself in an alternate reality, meeting his soulmate for a brief moment of pure bliss, but is abruptly yanked back into third-dimensional reality. Riding with him on a leisurely Sunday drive, his Alter Ego imparts greater truths about the hidden reality on Earth, controlling humanity in chaos and fear. At the edge of a meadow, Phelps sees past veils separating dimensions, sees enigmatic creatures in another dimension of lesser density. Gun in hand, he pursues them into the woods and witnesses a scene that challenges even his cop-exposed, desensitized perceptions of reality. Unaware of DNA mutating within him, Phelps progressively evolves into the prototype for the next generation human, with remarkable abilities. He discovers his Alter Ego is here to fulfill the highest destiny – the liberation of humanity, through Phelps as his personal vehicle. Does he have the courage to intervene – in time? Will Phelps rise above his own terror to change the impending outcome?
The story behind the story.
This film has several messages, its primary one the alignment of soul with human self, of divine, light-bearing energy coming to Earth in human form to liberate humanity from a malevolent invader controlling it through chaos and fear. This message resonates with the largest, fastestgrowing audience in the world, embracing alternate realities, subconscious alter egos, the evolution of human DNA, and spanning the gap between The Secret and action sci-fi films with metaphysical overtones – Lucy, or Avatar. Now is the time. Austin filmmaker Dennis Higgins’ Renegade of Light, shooting in and around Austin with local actors and crew as well as A-listers, will be a low-budget production marketed to major studios and domestic and foreign theatrical, DVD, Pay Per View and TV distributors. See the trailer and find out more about previews, events, and unique investment opportunities at www.RenegadeofLight.com

COAL MINER’S DAUGHTER Fossils, fire and Father’s Day by Folade Speaks At my grandparent’s home, there was a coalmine closet. From a tiny window, I was told as a toddler, a coal truck would come and dump the coal into the basement’s closet window. As children, we were afraid of the closet because after Grandpa passed, no one ever opened the door. It was he who had the job of moving the coal from the closet to the furnace, and the mystery of the closet to children whose reference point for coal was being on Santa’s skip list stayed eternal. Researching Father’s Day, I learned its first inception was from a miner’s daughter, to honor miners and fathers who transitioned as a result of the largest coal mining accident in history. Interesting these bridges to sources of energy and heat are related to fathers and the masculine, as are the Sun and Solar Plexus chakra. Think about Dads and fossils, and here we are again, the bridge to an energy source. For Father’s Day, there are always family members at the store searching for the perfect fossil for their dad. When asked which fossils resonate with fathering energies, fossil specialist Diane Parma mentioned three favorites – one with creative fossil attributes, one with more practical properties, one in the middle. In other words, if your father wants to counsel you, is he going to take you on a parachuting adventure while he jokingly offers some life metaphors, or is he more likely to advise you from across a long executive oak table glaring over the rim of his glasses – or somewhere in between? Orthoceras. This member of the Cephalopod family is an eye catcher, its white color usually surrounded by contrasting dark grey or brown sediment. It can help reach goals, because it enhances creative thinking and grounds and strengthens the Muladhara (Root) Chakra. Trilobite. Working in groups, patience leading others, and assisting with parenting and better communications, these fossils are the remains of water bugs, and are more practical “solution finders.” Coral. Group energy and creativity, thinking outside the box, communications at work are all metaphysical properties of coral. One of the most visually gorgeous fossils with the greatest variety of formations, coral can remind us of gracefully drifting anemone, or something very cosmic and alien-like. Having it around can help remove

depression and nervousness, an excellent addition to home or office. Shiva Lingam Stone. These egg-like formations are made of mineral, and balance masculine and feminine, representing yin/yang. Another Muladhara supporter, they balance the Root chakra, ignite kundalini energies, and assist spinal support – bringing us back to that fire energy of the Sun and Solar Plexus.
The supreme natural masculine energy source is sun and sky.
The feminine power center is the Svadhisthana (Sacral) Chakra, and the masculine center is the Manipura (Solar Plexus) Chakra. Crystals that support the masculine chakra are Citrine, Pyrite, Solaris Quartz, Sunstone, and Golden Healer. Nuummite literally assists fathers as they parent, and as they work through issues related to their own fathers. There’s a grounding theme men often seek running through all these fossils and minerals. Experience shows in addition to fossils, men are often drawn to the agate family, brown jaspers, and hematite. The root of these crystals is their ability to help stabilize energy levels and maintain a balanced and foundational Root Chakra. On the flip side, there’s always the possibility Dad needs some feminine balance in his life, and there are a few crystals that might help men connect with feminine energies. Malachite pushes out negative patterns and old belief systems to help understand opposite views and ways of living, Rose Quartz builds self-love – the key to loving others with an open heart – and Aquamarine washes away rigidity and judgment. Let’s face it – sometimes we offspring can be brain-scratchers. It takes a level, woke up, and open-eyed rad Dad to process this new level of being in the world. Happy Father’s Day month to all! BEING YOUR OWN CHILL PILL by Meg Sylvester
Remember as a kid, getting worked up, feeling tidal
waves of emotions running through you? Most likely, your natural response was to slam a door, stomp down a hallway, cry, say something mean. Next thing you know, mom’s telling you to take a deep breath. Really? That’s the advice? A deep breath? Turns out, there’s wisdom in mom’s simple instructions. In today’s world of quick fixes, expecting to find answers anywhere except inside, taking a few deep breaths to calm down sounds too simple to be true. Many mindset coaching clients desperately want help managing stress – from job, kiddos, spouse, the dog who still isn’t house trained, grocery store, the lady mouth-breathing right behind you at the movies – stressful situations and people are everywhere. Humans think the best way to deal with stress is avoid it altogether, but thirty minutes at the office makes it obvious that won’t work. After trying avoidance, we go for just-behappy, plaster on a smile, talk in a high-pitched voice, pretend everything is totally fine.
Then comes the numbing plan – drugs, alcohol, sex, TV, yelling, food, pharmaceuticals.
None of these gives you tools to overcome stress. Rather than avoiding or numbing stress, try techniques to respond and reset. Responding to stress in a healthy way, you don’t stay trapped and overwhelmed in emotions like anxiety – you allow them to pass through. A few stress-response tools in your back pocket make all the difference when you’re in a moment, guiding you to be cool, calm, collected. One of the simplest, most effective tools for on the spot stress relief is deep, diaphragmatic breathing – belly breathing. With belly breathing, a number of positive shifts occur. For starters, it implants a pause into the moment. Rather than blindly reacting to situations, a pause, combined with breath, helps you collect yourself and respond in a manner supporting rational thinking. Your diaphragm activates your vagus nerve, running through your heart into the brain, triggering a relaxation response – the direct opposite of fight, flight, or freeze responses to stress and adrenalin. You’re giving yourself a moment to collect yourself, and cultivating a bedrock of chill. Belly breathing is so simple babies do it. Babies know we’re put on Earth with tools we need, but along the way we sever the cord to them, seeking answers and fixes elsewhere.
How to Belly Breathe.
• Empty your breath. Contract your abs, like doing a situp. Push all the air out on the exhale, so your belly contracts. • Take a large breath through the nose, filling your belly with air, like there’s a beach ball in your lower abdomen. (Typically, bellies contract when inhaling – do the opposite.) • Act like there’s a bouncing ball in your stomach. Exhaling, it bounces back towards your spine. Inhaling, it bounces forward, to your abdomen. • Visualize breath traveling to the pit of your stomach – long, slow breaths, in and out through the nose.
Do this anywhere, anytime.
Meetings, driving, being reamed by the boss-man, before (or during) tests, presentations, awkward talks. No one will know you’re tuning into the ultimate Zen station, except for the fact you’re cool as a cucumber. Next time kids get in a screaming match, traffic piles up, or you’re about to give that big presentation, try a few rounds of belly breathing. Reset your mindset. SOULMATE REAL ESTATE Two of the most important life choices grownups have to make are finding the right partner, and finding the right house. Soul mates and real estate – make the wrong choice in either, and you’ve got a big mess on your hands, one that can be difficult (if not impossible) to fix. It’s surprising how many parallels there are, how much one affects the other. Here’s what a professional realtor who happens to have experience in relationship coaching has to say. (As you read, try substituting home wherever you see words like relationship, soulmate, or person.) by Dephanie Cates Why are divorce rates so high? Why do months, or years, of meeting and dating end up with the same confusing, disappointing results and diminishing self-confidence, boxing you into thinking there’s no one out there for you. Good news – there is someone. The work’s a bit more than just meeting and greeting online, or at restaurants, happy hours, or through friends and family, however. It’s an inside job. Here’s how it’s done. Step 1: Place yourself in a peaceful, relaxing setting, no distractions – lounging by the pool, on your patio, at the beach watching the tide roll in. Remember yourself as a small child, and the first visuals you recall – parents, siblings, pet, first bicycle ride, grandparents – and how safe and loving your larger-than-life seemed. Memories are seeds for what you want your life to be. Step 2: Know yourself, as never before. Ask questions with life-revealing answers. As a child, were you complimented when you wore new clothes to church or a party? Did you have a clean, safe home with lovely cooking smells? Did your dad have a full-time profession, or go from job to job looking for the right position? Were you the oldest child, taking care of younger children with little reward and constant responsibility? Were there vacation plans, family get-togethers? Step 3: Make a list with two columns, Loving and Fearful. Below each, write examples – grandmother teaching you to prepare a special dessert or bake a turkey, dad expressing anger and frustration because the car wouldn’t start, or being constantly out of sorts, someone to fear and avoid. Childhood experiences mold you quickly into the person you become, and you react to new situations based on them – that was your resumé, and each subsequent experience was (is) based on those early years. Remember your first marriage, first breakup? Were there light bulb moments, betrayals too blatant to overlook? Know yourself truly and have the courage of your convictions, and heart-breaking Step 4: Examine past pains to understand lessons learned. Write down qualities you want in your next relationship based on those lessons, or on positive observations in daily life. Think about your days and nights, how you want them to look. Make a long, detailed list of qualities your ideal partner will bring into the relationship. Be specific – however seemingly insignificant, this is exactly what you’ll get!

Step 5: Gratitude is a critical part of self-examination. Be thankful for who you are and what you have. Life is good, and the road to finding your soul mate is no exception. The work may feel intense, but it’s the most rewarding work you ever do. Realize the power you have – you’re designing on paper the person of your dreams, based on who you are and what you need and want. Step 6: Know you have that kind of power. Remember, it’s an inside job – inside you. No one can tell you what kind of relationship you need. After careful, purposeful scrutiny, you’ll understand the power, the draw, you have in bringing into your life the relationship that compliments and completes you. All the steps you take afterwards will depend on these first ones. Take your time with them, and then the person you share your life with and the space in which you share it will have something in common. They’ll be home. ALL MY F RIENDS The Art of J Muzacz All my friends know the low rider The low rider is a little higher Low rider drives a little slower Low rider is a real goer -- War, Low Rider
S
ay you travel the world, teaching English, working odd jobs, creating indoor and outdoor murals in such farflung locales as Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand, writing and publishing a couple of books in Japan. You come back to Austin, not far from your hometown of Houston, teach Urban Painting to teens for the City of Austin, mentor mural painters at the Mexican American Cultural Center, develop an art curriculum for an alternative school in Dripping Springs, and have your work in galleries, shows, and on the sides of buildings all over town.
What next?
What’s next for J Muzacz is to chill, pimp a few rides. Can’t get more chill than a lowrider, homey, que no? That’s why they call them SLAB, esse – Slow, Low, And Bangin’ – and that’s what Muzacz is calling his solo show at the Dougherty Arts Center June 16-July 14. For Stained Slabs, Muzacz has reined in his usual mural-sized work, honing in on detail to capture what he calls the fragmented essence of stained glass or mosaics in a body of stylized, hand-painted work. Stylized, hand-painted work, come to think of it, is a pretty good description of a lowrider.
14
Way above the law.
Like pachuco zoot suits, lowriders started getting popular in the Forties and Fifties, both of them not-so-subtle ways for Mexican-Americans from the barrio to thumb their noses at gringo culture and show some style – and both of them illegal for a while. Baggy zoot suits supposedly violated World War II fabric rationing rules. Lowriders had their very own law – Section 24008 of the California Vehicle Code, enacted January 1, 1958, made it illegal for any part of a car to be lower than the bottom of the wheel rims. Within a year, though, some vato came up with the idea of using hydraulic pumps to jack them up to legal levels by flipping a switch (a perfect fit for the new X-framed Chevy Impala), and – ¡híjole! – a culture was born. “See a cop, raise it up. Pass a cop, lower it back down,” Demian Bichir explains in the film Lowriders. ’57 Chevy
Impala on Fire
The more things change…
The more they remain the same. No talk of border walls six or seven decades ago, but plenty of racism and anti-immigrant hysteria. That doesn’t have to happen, though, Muzacz maintains. Art and culture can create a sea change – like having a traditionally Hispanic, East Austin art form in a West Austin venue. “Hopefully, this event will be more important than just art and cars on display, maybe a catalyst for an increasingly unified Austin.”

Take a little trip, take a little trip, take a little trip and see… Stained Slabs, the solo show by J Muzacz, June 16-July 14 at the Dougherty, 1110 Barton Springs Rd. Opening reception is a June 23 showcase (and great photo op – wear your coolest duds), with a lowrider custom car show in the parking lot, food and drink, DJ’s, break dancers, and sponsor booths by SprATX, HOPE Campaign, car show circuit Low Life Originals, and major sponsor and co-organizer Austin Lowriding. www.JMuzacz.com

Touching Paper Austin’s last metaphysical bookstore
by Kelly Dowman Tired of cookie-cutter corporate bookstore experiences, of walking into a store and you can’t tell where you are because they all look the same? Perhaps you’ve gotten away from shopping in brick-andmortar bookstores entirely. Why go anywhere when online shopping is so convenient? No need even to find your car keys, they bring your purchases right to your door. There are places where you can go to have an immersion experience. Walk in, and you’re immediately greeted by soft music, melodic verbalizations, cello, and piano, dancing together in the air, washing away the cares of the day or the stress of traffic. You can just close your eyes, breathe in, and let the music float you away for a while.
16
Ever notice how good a metaphysical bookstore smells?
It’s an alchemical blend of incense, candles, and tea. Salt lamps glow softly, and everywhere you look, there are interesting things to pick up and touch. It’s a tactile experience. Don’t resist, reach out and touch something. Just being there seems to lower people’s blood pressure. Books beckon from all over, everything from latest bestsellers to ancient wisdom. What do you want to read about? Prosperity? Healing? Near Death Experiences? Relationships? How to live a happier, more peaceful life? There’s a book for that. And if you just want to browse, that’s perfect, too. In the age of the Kindle, there’s something comforting about paper books. Paper books have a heft to them. They have a scent. They crinkle delightfully when you turn the page. The paper texture under your fingertips, as you move your hand across the page, cannot be duplicated by a screen on an electronic device.
Pages can be folded over and dog-eared.
Margins can be written in. Books can be shared – loaned to friends or given away when you are done reading them, something you can’t do with electronic books. One other thing you can have in a metaphysical bookstore that you can’t usually get in a corporate bookstore is conversation. While booksellers certainly can’t claim to have read every book, we’ve read a bunch of them – we know metaphysical books. We’re also interested in metaphysical topics of conversation. There’s always something new to learn, something new to share. You’re not going to get that at your favorite online retailer. So come on in, get away from the daily grind, soak in some of the peace. Indulge your senses. Listen. Smell. Touch. Breathe. You’re invited to a richer experience, a deeper dive into life, a more soulful place. Some things are more valuable than saving money online. We are the last metaphysical bookstore in Austin. Join us. Kelly Dowman is Metaphysical Bookstore Manager at Unity Church of the Hills, in its twenty-second year as a dynamic, spiritual community that continues to celebrate life, serve truth, and empower people to transform their lives. Located in Northwest Austin, UCOH offers three Sunday services each week, along with a year-round slate of special events, classes, workshops, and retreats for spiritually curious individuals and families looking for a positive path to spiritual living. UCOH encourages others to remain open to truth from all traditions, while maintaining a commitment to Unity teachings grounded in the principles of practical Christianity. www.UnityHills.org

Floating in an undefined space with no direction at all can be one of the most agonizing, and challenging, of times. The first step to starting over is to honor your feelings of loss. and the dream that has died. It’s important to grieve. Kick and scream, let it out, let yourself release it all emotionally. Then do ceremony. Find symbolic burnables to represent your dream, and blow into them the essence of all that still lives within you. Put these items in a fire. Think of it as releasing the light wound up in your investment, and returning it to Source. Allow the old form to go so a new one can come through.
MASTER WEAVERS
Transitions and starting over by Christina Allen
We start with dreams. We begin a relationship or a
new job with a vision of all kinds of possibilities, and we push forward, putting things into place so they can happen. We invest great time and resources, and at times are asked to overcome great feats. As much as we put our hearts and souls into it, however, sometimes a dream may end. It just dies on the vine, never coming to full maturity. When we put all of our eggs in one basket (as we does when really wanting something) and that dream evaporates, how do we pick up and move on? The marriage has died, the career path has evaporated, or maybe you’re having to pack and change towns. After so much time and identity invested, we can lose our sense of self. Who we were dims to a flicker, and we fear we’ll fade out all together.
Transitions are the space between the death of the old, and the birth of the new.
In the throes of them, it can feel dark and hopeless, at the doorway of depression. The losses are palpable and can leave a bitter taste in our mouths, especially when the new path is not yet visible. We may even feel let down by God himself, or herself.
18
It’s important to reflect on what you gained from the experience. What strengths did you develop following this dream? What are the shiny bits left in the ashes that you could now collect? Are you more tenacious now? More compassionate? The good news is that there’s a world of possibility that still awaits you out there. Think of it as a fan, unfolding into possible destiny lines. They may not necessarily be clear to you, but they’re out there, each one tuned to a certain vibration. When you do the healing work necessary to address what wounds drove you to invest in this dream initially, you will recalibrate, and they will become accessible. Did your old dream compensate for your weaknesses? Did it make you feel safe? What needs to heal so you can dream in a better, healthier dream?
Think of yourself as a weaver.
Your beautiful tapestry has unraveled into a tangle of yarn, but the loom frame still stands. How does your soul want to express itself now, after this growth – what does it long for? The tool of the Master Weaver is intention. It comes not from the mind, but from the heart, and from the soul. As we heal our vibration shifts and our intensions become more congruent with higher potential destinies. In your old dream, were you trying to control an outcome, dominate events? As Master Weavers, we are co-creators. Our job is to intend what comes next, and then surrender details to Spirit. This doesn’t mean you don’t do the footwork to make it happen, so pick up that warp and rethread your loom. Weave new strands of intention through it, but create space for Spirit to shape events in directions you cannot possibly foresee. GREAT APES AND HISSY FITS The Hormone of Desire T
estosterone has long been known as the hormone of desire, for both men and women. It’s also the most misunderstood hormone. Most people think of testosterone as the difference between a steer and a bull, with its fearless determination and focus. These certainly are attributes of optimal levels of testosterone coursing through the veins, but testosterone in a man imbues him with a quiet, non-arrogant confidence, resulting in an ego difficult to hurt. Think of a troop of great apes. What’s the personality of the big silverback male? He’s usually very laid back, playing with the kids, but capable of incredible ferocity when called upon if his troop is threatened by a predator, or he’s challenged by another male seeking to overthrow his position. When the challenger gives up and shows his belly, however, he stops, as if saying, “Good. Don’t do that again.” He doesn’t continue his counterattack, as if he were still angry – that happens when there’s too much estrogen. We’ve heard about bodybuilders who, after taking too much testosterone, angrily injure someone. Most people assume it was testosterone making him mean. Testosterone, however, doesn’t make men mean – too much estrogen does. Testosterone is made into estrogen. Take too much, like our bodybuilder, and it’s made into estrogen. He’s really just having a hissy fit.
Have a heart – don’t pee all night.
Testosterone is commonly believed to be responsible for causing prostate cancer. That’s incorrect. Low testosterone is the biggest risk factor. Ask yourself who gets it – younger men with higher testosterone, or older men with lower levels? Whose prostate grows so big that complete emptying of the bladder’s impossible? Who’s constantly going to the bathroom – a young man with good testosterone levels, or an older man with declining ones? In both cases, prostate cancer, and an enlarged prostate, result from low testosterone and elevated estrogen. Estrogen breakdown products cause prostate cancer, and low testosterone and high estrogen causes the prostate to grow. Testosterone replacement has been associated with elevated blood pressure and elevated cholesterol – incorrectly. Elevated testosterone in a man lowers blood pressure, triglycerides, bad cholesterol, and raises good cholesterol. Often thought to contribute to heart disease, it

actually maintains elasticity of coronary vessels, and is the strongest vasodilator known to man. It can reverse congestive heart failure by increasing the strength of muscular contraction and, dilating vessels of the heart, increases blood flow to heart muscle – which has three times more testosterone receptors than the prostate. It’s one of the most effective ways to treat type II diabetes – and depression – in men, often obfuscating the need for drugs. Testosterone helps build muscle, burn fat, and prevent brain shrinkage as you age.
Zinc, antibiotics, and plastic.
Both men and women lose testosterone later in life, but the healthiest agers don’t lose it, and it shows. Their ability to repair and maintain body strength and endurance remains good their entire life. Sparkle remains in their eyes, productivity continues, sex drive remains healthy throughout life, with many loving couples remaining active into their eighties. I know – I treat them. The problem of losing testosterone production is happening earlier in recent decades, early as the twenties. It isn’t normal, but quite common. Doctors and researchers looking several possible mechanisms – toxic diet, sedentary lifestyles, frequent antibiotic use, zinc deficiency, and estrogenic effects of plastics. It’s not uncommon that young men have testosterone levels below 200, when the expected range is 225 to 825, and healthy is 700 to 1100. The same factors lower testosterone in women, causing low libido, poor muscle tone, poor focus, and osteoporosis.
Testosterone levels can be brought back up by different methods. In the past, testosterone was mixed with an oil, given as a shot weekly or biweekly. Transdermal patches, approved by FDA, are usually insufficient to optimize levels. It can also be compounded into cream, applied to arms or thighs. The most effective method is crystalline pellets of testosterone placed deep under the skin in a one or two minute in-office procedure, maintaining healthy levels for several months without elevating estrogen levels above normal, respecting the body’s normal physiology. As midsummer approaches and days grow longer, it’s the perfect opportunity to take time to chill. But everyday life is hectic, and the world outside is chaotic. What happens if you just can’t seem to relax? When you’re unable to tune out external chaos, your entire body goes into overdrive – and stays there. This heightened state of awareness can manifest itself in a variety of forms – anxiety, insomnia, adrenal fatigue – as your body’s way of telling you, pay attention. Stress and anxiety are usually tangled up with complex dynamics and triggering factors, but the solution is often quite simple – grounding, centering, and balancing the root chakra. The root chakra, or Muladhara (from Sanskrit Mula meaning root and Adhara meaning support), is the first of the seven chakras, the foundational chakra, and is situated at the bottom of spine near the perineum. It’s represented by the Earth element, and the color red.
It relates to basic needs and survival instincts.
When it’s open and balanced, you feel safe, secure, grounded, ready to expand in the physical world. When blocked or out of balance, you may experience issues with adrenal function, autoimmune disease, anxiety, or depression. So how do you answer your root chakra’s cry for attention and find your way back to relaxation? Here are three easy steps to ground yourself and give your root chakra the support it needs to open, balance, and expand – no crystals, meditation experience, or yoga skills needed. See Red. Visualize the color red glowing at the base of your spine, growing brighter and stronger with every breath, opening and expanding into a strong, secure foundation that makes you feel safe, secure, powerful. Connect to the Earth. Slip off your shoes, walk barefoot through the grass. Plant an herb garden, sink your fingers into soil. Take a nap against the trunk of a shady oak tree. Swim in a lake or natural springs. Bathe with magnesium flakes and a few drops of sandalwood or lavender essential oil. Nourish Your Foundation. Ground your diet with root vegetables – potato, sweet potato, carrot, ginger, onion, garlic, turmeric; high-protein foods – pasture-raised eggs, grassfed meats, bone broth, legumes, nuts; and red foods – beets, strawberries, raspberries, cherries, apples, pomegranates, tomatoes.

Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, How can I do what my angels ask of me if I am not hearing messages? Do I go with intuition or am I not being asked? Jan, 70, Cedar Park, TX Dear Jan, It looks to us like you’ve been getting messages for twenty-nine years, but in a very subtle way. It also looks like you do everything that God asks of you. Some people think that it is just their conscious mind without realizing that they are receiving messages, which generally comes in your thinking. Hang in there, for when you begin to formulate and design a new and different lifestyle, you will begin to hear on another level. It looks like a new partnership will surprise you. One of your high teachers, Sandalfon, will be uniting through your brainwave. Dear Ashtara, I am leaving for Colorado and I am still stuck, and don’t look or feel like myself yet. Will I be okay and get better if I leave and start school in Boulder at the community college? Allegra, 19, Austin, TX Dear Allegra, Your education is of utmost importance. You will fall in love and start enjoying your life. You are brilliant, and your enthusiastic and great attitude will take you into a great life. It looks like you could use some potassium two or three times a week for one or two months. Your angels are with you and always will be. Lord Maitreya is about to talk with you. Dear Ashtara, I am wondering if we are born ascended, why do we endure physical ailments? Sonya, Austin, TX Dear Sonya, Physical pain has nothing to do with ascension. One of the perils of Earth is having pains (or not), because we are on Earth to formulate a lifestyle where we can overcome pain, fear, indecision, lack, and on and on. Once a person ascends fully, they do not have to come back to Earth. They get to become a master, guru, or saint via the Light from the other side. I see Archangel Michael assisting you now.

Dear Ashtara, I have been dating my sweetheart for over five years. Do you think we should get married? Theresa, 47, San Antonio, TX Dear Theresa, It looks like you are in the middle of a dilemma and cannot make this decision if he asks. Remember, when we marry we should try to consider health and happiness, as well as a life filled with romantic adventures for both of you. Partnership envelops daily. Unions develop when two individuals couple up and then each of their lives are entwined through unconditional and unified marriage. Ask yourself if that is where you are in the present moment. If so, marry! From Lord Ashtar. Dear Ashtara, If karma is erased at transition, then how does one explain karmic patterns that even children seem to have? Vikki, Austin, TX Dear Vikki, When we are born, we and our soul have been wiped clean of any circumstances from the last life. At that time, our karmic patterns begin whenever we are able to think, feel and act upon circumstances, usually about three years of age. Karma and lessons are cleared between lifetimes because there are so many lessons to learn in each incarnation that one lifetime is enough. To take lessons from past lifetimes is not fair, God says. Go your merry way rejoicing that when we transcend into the next life, our karma is cleared. Thank you, Vikki, for being such an old soul. From God, Himself. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels.
