hat better way to open our 8th Summer Season than with a show that celebrates individuality and the success you can only find by being yourself. I am not sure what I’d envisioned for our company eight years ago, but I doubt it included this much pink! I do know that together, with the support from this incredible community and the best patrons anywhere, we laid the foundation and nurtured this unique and wonderful theatre and I am grateful to present Legally Blonde as the first offering to this blockbuster summer of theatre. Our next stop takes us south from Harvard, to the Upper West Side in New York City. West Side Story is one of my favorite musicals and I am excited to share it with new devotees and take a trip down memory lane for those of us who can experience this classic over and over. The musical, based on Romeo and Juliet, explores the rivalry between the Sharks and the Jets, rival street gangs in New York in the mid-1950s. West Side Story is about many things: rage and power, belonging and frustration; but most of all it’s about the scourge of prejudice, and its implications for love. West Side Story faced, for the first time in a musical, the harsh reality that things don’t always work out and sometimes hatred has the final say. It’s a painful universal truth that we can still pluck out of today’s headlines. Enjoy this beautifully told classic featuring some of Broadway’s most beloved songs. Staying in the Big Apple, it’s shiny, new, and modern... this is the 1922 Manhattan that Millie
aims to conquer; and conquer it she does. Based on the 1967 film with Julie Andrews, Mary Tyler Moore, and Carol Channing, Thoroughly Modern Millie danced its way onto Broadway in 2002 and went on to win six Tony awards, including Best Musical. Millie’s goal is to be utterly unique, completely modern. The problem is she takes her cues from what every other “unique” woman is doing. With tips fresh from the latest issue of Vogue, Millie becomes a daring individual, just like everybody else. She ultimately learns that love and friendship are much more important than money or image. It’s a fabulous musical from start to finish and includes something for the whole family. Finally, someone recently asked me, “What is Little Shop of Horrors about?” It’s about a terrific score and a fun story about a cast and crew that know how to rock together – and, oh yes, it’s about two assistants in a skid row flower shop who almost learn to believe in themselves but are tragically “done in” by their dependence on a sadistic “Doctor” and a “mean green” maneating plant. We hope you not only leave the theater tonight smiling and singing a few catchy tunes but also thinking “beware of relying on the wrong things in life.” In addition to our wonderful annual Whatchmawhozit’s production (Annie KIDS) featuring budding artists 7-12 years old, this year we are incredibly excited to announce ThingamaWHO’s inaugural performance of Pinkalicious: The Musical featuring our newly created audition only program for youth ages 13-17. Working alongside professional adult actors, these youths will perform a fully
produced stage musical that runs alongside our Mainstage shows beginning in July. We’re so proud to be working with these talented artists and giving them opportunities that will give them a tremendous head start in their art’s careers... yes, it’s who you know! There is much to celebrate this season, and YOU are why we celebrate! Thingamajig Theatre Company has grown from serving 6000 people in 2010 to a total of over 145,000 people today. The circle has grown and continues to grow wider with our commitment of being a radically welcoming theatre serving all audiences. We have made the commitment
of creating a space where diverse opinions, courageous dialogue, and local, national, and international community engagement is not only valued, but vital to our shared artistic and educational success. We make this pledge in the hope of curating a welcome home for all. Thank you for your support and contributions – we could not do this without you. Come celebrate the magnificence with us, all season long and into the upcoming 2018-2019 Fall/Winter Season. — Tim Moore Co-Founder and Producing Artistic Director
The F ri ends of the The atre “The Friends of the Thingamajig Theater Company is a social organization in support of the not-for-profit professional theater in Pagosa Springs. It operates in support of the Theater management, to assist in fundraising, organize social events, and to act as an advocacy group to the community. In so doing, we will aid in the long term success and sustainability of quality professional theater in Pagosa Springs.” There is excitement amongst the Friends of the Thingamajig Theater as we approach another fun- filled summer of Theater. Kicking off in June with Legally Blond followed in quick succession by the musicals West Side Story, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Little Shop of Horrors and ThingamaWHO’s Pinkalicious. What a great lineup. If you simply love the performing arts and the wonders that are produced by our nationally recognized Theater, then you are in for a treat. What if I want more involvement? Then you should consider joining the Friends of the Theater. Your membership provides you with the opportunity to get a lot closer to Thingamajig. We sponsor many social events that involve the actors and crew from the Theater including, the Welcome Party at the Parelli Ranch, the Picnic at Williams Lake, the Summer Farewell Party, and the Winter Party. In addition, we host activities with the actors that might include tubing, hiking, skiing, snow shoeing and, of course, partying. ‘Friends’ perks also include the very popular “Behind the Scenes” events where we explore various aspects of the Theater experience, which gives you a whole new outlook on all the nuances that go into the production of a professional show. Tech Tuesdays is another fun experience where the Friends provide nourishment for the cast and crew on the frantic Tuesday before the opening of a new production. This is the day when all the technology, lights, sound, props, costumes and set come together with
the actors and the Friends providing dinner are right in the middle of it. What does it mean to be a Friend? Like any friend it does not come with an obligation, however sometimes circumstances dictate that a friend step up and help. So, it was in the last year when the Theater management was faced with enormous personal challenges. Mobilizing into an army of volunteers, the Friends helped where they could to make sure that the shows went on. The outpouring of support was a testament to how important this Theater is to us and to the community. How do I join? If you would like to get closer to the Theater experience and join a group of likeminded people who love Theater and like to socialize, then you should consider joining the Friends of the Theater. The membership fee is $30.00 per person per year. Should you wish to join or get more information, access the Theater web site at pagosacenter.org and go to the tab “support us” and look for links to the Friends. Or you can fill out an application form at the Theater. On behalf of the Friends Steering Committee and the Friends of the Theater, we hope you enjoy the shows. — Simon Fuger President of the Friends of the Theater

J
ill Fives graces the Thingamajig stage as lead scenic artist – creating the painted effects and texture that, along with lighting, bring to life a magical theatre set. Jill describes herself as “a behind the scenes type of gal.” PSCA Executive Director Laura Moore describes Jill as “crazy talented.” This summer, Jill Fives leaves her comfort zone to take center stage as PSCA’s featured gallery artist. Her show is appropriately named Transitions.
Jill Fives, Scenic Artist Jill got her degree in Fashion Design, and soon after moved to Tempe, AZ to work with a company doing production art for commercials and movies. “That’s where I was introduced to scenic painting. I love painting BIG.” In 2003, Jill moved to Colorado and spent ten years as lead scenic artist at the Arvada Center. There she connected with Laura Moore who played the spider in James and the Giant Peach. “I thought she was the most exotic spider ever.”
Jill is now in her fourth year painting full time for Thingamajig. “It was transformative because I was getting burned out with theatre. But Thingamajig has a different approach and it appeals to my inner being. I definitely have a loose, less follow-the-rules mindset, so this place is perfect. It’s Thingamajig!” “My construction team is phenomenal and each year I become closer to the volunteers. Thingamajig is an outstanding family.” Jill favors more complicated and detail-oriented techniques. “They’re more fun. I embrace the challenges of production work. It’s a physical job. The size, limited timeframes, last minute changes with no light, creating techniques with no clue how I’m going to approach it – all this is what keeps the work exciting.” Jill is also in her third year as lead scenic artist for Aspen Opera.
Jill Fives, Fine Artist For the last three years, Jill and photographer husband Kirk Speer, and Kitty Gemstone, have lived on the road and gone where the work is – freelance photography and scenic painting. Jill’s fantasy was to find a studio and return to painting fine art for herself – something she had not done for 25 years. Her dream came true when Laura Moore texted her: “How would you like a Jill Fives art show? We have the wall (PSCA Gallery). It’s yours this summer.” But Jill didn’t have a studio where she could paint for the show, and she and Kirk couldn’t find the perfect place to paint. It was then that Laura offered her Thingamajig’s Artist House loft as a temporary studio. Jill’s been painting there since February. “It’s a huge learning curve. Fine art is a completely different discipline. I’m trained in oil, and I’m using acrylic. I’m back and forth – painting in the studio and then the set.” “I’m combining my world as a scenic artist with the cropped style I used as a kid. As a young artist-in-training, the images I loved were not big stories, but more the tree than the forest. I focused on small details, and that is what I’m doing with these images.” “This show is about what makes me happy – it’s what I’m passionate about being in front of for a period of time. I’m a huge animal lover. My first passion is the flamingo, my spirit animal. Many of my paintings are painted from Kirk’s photos. Our travels have afforded us many exciting photo/painting opportunities.”
Jill was hired as scenic artist for the recently released Netflix film Our Souls at Night, starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Some of the pieces she painted for Redford’s character will also be in Transitions. Speaking about Thingamajig and PSCA directors Tim and Laura Moore, Jill says, “They have provided for me as an artist – and not just me – with what they have brought to Pagosa. It touches me beyond any thank you I could give them. I have this moment to have this article written about me, and to have my show Transitions because of Laura and Tim. My show is the biggest hug I can give to them.”

Excited to be educating the future of tomorrow, Pia invites you to step inside the story we are unfolding for you tonight. Sit back and celebrate the arts! ADRIENNE YOUNG (Costume Designer West Side Story, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Little Shop of Horrors) grew up in Pagosa Springs and ventured off to L.A. after high school to work towards a future in fashion design. After receiving associate degrees in both Fashion and Theatre Costume Design from FIDM, she immediately started working as a freelance costume designer for theater, feature films, TV pilots, music videos, commercials, and editorial fashion shoots, and took on a corporate job designing for department stores. After seven years with her nose to the grind, Adrienne moved back to Pagosa to raise her son Wyatt Grey Haas. Adrienne now runs an online vintage boutique called Ghost Rabbits Vintage, and is a performing artist in burlesque and aerial arts under her stage name Sass A Frass when she is not designing. Adrienne could not be more excited to return to the Thingamajig Theater after designing 6 productions with them so far: AIDA, Hairspray, Big River, Sister Act, A Tuna Christmas and Proof. She is so grateful to be reunited with her true passion and back in her home town and community she loves!
