PUBLISHER’S LETTER To Our Dedicated Readers, 2018 marks a very special milestone for The Valley Wedding Pages, LLC as we celebrate 15 years of publication! These 15 years would not have been possible without the love and support from our faithful readers, loyal vendors, and the Rio Grande Valley. When I first purchased the magazine back in 2003, it was just an Annual Planning Guide. I never would have guessed that our company would grow into becoming a full-service planning publication, now with a seasonal social magazine, and a strong online and social media presence. Throughout our publication run, we have welcomed and debuted countless local vendors and professionals in the special events industry, many who have been with us since our inception. My staff and I have groomed this company to be well-recognized not only for its print products, but as well as its involvement in the Rio Grande Valley. We enjoy contributing to many organizations and charities, and participating in local social events such as grand openings, fundraisers, and wedding fairs. TTHE PIXEL STUDIO BY RIGO RODRIGUEZ
We at the Valley Wedding Pages, LLC are honored and blessed to have reached such an important milestone in the company’s history, especially pleased to have been able to celebrate with our 15th Anniversary Guest of Honor, the revered and award-winning David Tutera. Who was gracious enough to join us for the announcement of our annual “How I Got Engaged” contest winners at a spectacular evening event hosted at the Capilla del Rio grand opening and ribbon cutting soiree. The night was glittered with eager couples, fantastic bites and libations, grooving music, and our wonderful vendors. The festivities continued Friday at the Ballroom at McAllen Convention Center, where over 300 guests joined us for a couture fashion show, scrumptious lunch, and the coup de gras a Q&A session with David himself. It was a whirlwind weekend and we are forever grateful to be able to share this experience with our Valley Wedding Pages family. The party, however, doesn’t stop there…the show must go on and we will continue on our path to share knowledge, experience, and advice with brides and quinceneras alike. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,
Leticia Guerra-Cantu & Staff

T
he friendship between Christian and Alexis started at Rio Grande City High School. After two years their friendship grew into a romantic partnership which, in turn, resulted in marriage complete with a fairy tale wedding. The spring ceremony took place at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in historic Rio Grande City, where the couple had previously received some of their holy sacraments. The bride and her bridesmaids made a spectacular entrance, being chauffeured to the ceremony atop a bright red fire truck. The red carpet that decorated the fifty foot aisle served as a focal point up to the dynamic altar at the beautiful church that has been a staple in Starr County for decades. The adorable flower girls walked in smiling and carrying fire helmets with rose petals instead of baskets as tribute to the groom who is a proud Rio Grande City Fire Fighter. After the ceremony, the couple spent time with family and friends taking photographs at the gorgeous ninety year old Grotto located next to the church.
Alexis & Christian Photography by DAVID PEZZAT PHOTOGRAPHERS
The reception was short walk across the street. Guests were transported in to a completely transformed space, courtesy of Cantu’s Special Events, while Viol Consort welcomed everyone with sweet melodies from their string ensemble. The event center was decorated top to bottom with flowy white chiffon and accented with a suspended floral centerpiece of bountiful cherry blossoms. The tables, set up in a non-traditional pattern, incorporated a mix of round, square, and rectangle shapes to accommodate eight hundred guests. Everyone was treated to a unique ice sculpture in the form of a four foot fire truck another nod to the groom. Guests dined on local cuisine, complimented with a sweet treat chosen by the bride, her favorite cookie a vanilla bean macaroon provided by Cynthia’s Cakes. As the couple greeted their guests, the bride looked stunning in her beaded gown with intricate lacing and crystals beaded on to add the just the right touch of sparkle. The talented duo of David Pezzat and Oskar Hernandez captured every moment through their lenses during the night. Two lively musical groups provided the entertainment for the evening, while guests enjoyed a night filled with dancing and celebrating the love between the newlyweds. David Alexander Weddings & Events assisted the couple every step of the way with their planning process to ensure that their dream came true.

T
he hard work that goes into creating a wedding celebration can be a tedious affair, with many vendors to contact and details to remember. This is where the need for wedding planners, coordinators, and designers has grown exponentially. To keep organized and to relieve the stress of planning her special day, a bride should consider hiring a wedding planner for the entire planning or just the Day Of Coordination, a beneficial service that comes with many perks. OO A coordinator can help you keep within your budget and find you the best deals when contracting with a vendor. OO Their designing skills can create your overall wedding day look, from colors to centerpiece designs. OO They can schedule your appointments with the bridal boutique for your dress fittings and your cake tasting day with the baker.
OO Coordinators will take the lead with your wedding day by making sure all vendors arrive on time, all decor and place settings are complete, and that you, your fiancé, and entire wedding party are on time, keeping your mind at ease for the day. OO After the wedding, the coordinator can finalize payments with vendors and ensure all belongings, such as your guest book, gifts, and dress, are taken back to your home.
As you can see, these are just some of the benefits of hiring a wedding coordinator and designer, for they serve as your guide, advisor, and miracle worker that can leave you free to enjoy celebrating your nuptials.

fter rain and frigid temperatures the day before, we awoke to blue skies, sunshine, and a light breeze; the perfect weather for an outdoor wedding. Shanky got ready in the hotel suite with his groomsmen and I spent the morning at the venue with my matrons of honor getting pampered. The time finally arrived to make my entrance down the aisle. As I looked up at my handsome groom, my heart soared! I could not wait to make my commitment to him in front of all our family and friends. We began with the Christian rituals and then transitioned into the Hindu portion of the ceremony. The beautiful drapes and flowers on the pergola added such vibrant color to our festive event. The reception kicked off with us making our grand entrance and sharing our first dance. I was in awe at how beautifully our reception was decorated. Deep purple linens covered the tables, while a white lantern with floral accents sat in the center. Rich aromas from samosas, chicken tikka masala, dhal makhani, and lamb curry filled the air. Our guests loved the dessert table with its array of sweets including, my favorite, mini pecan pies! We danced the night away with our guests to an eclectic music collection of our favorite songs ranging from pop, reggaeton, country, and Bollywood. Our sparkler send-off signaled the end of the night and came way too soon. Shanky and I took one last look at the beautiful pergola, now lit with twinkling white lights, where we had exchanged our vows just hours before. I wanted to remember every detail of the day. The festivities may have come to an end, but our forever was just beginning!

O
nly 2 percent of marriages in the United States are composed of high school sweethearts, Jesse and I were lucky enough to fall into this special category. The odds were stacked against us, but our love proved the statistics wrong. Fast forward 10 years later and I got to marry the love of my life on what has become the most memorable and unforgettable day of my life. The day flew by like a blink of an eye, the smallest details didn’t seem to matter as I walked down the aisle with the first man to ever love me, my dad. Tears filled my eyes when I saw the love of my life so full of emotion as I neared him, the only thing that I could think was, “We made it.” Our Catholic ceremony was beautiful and moving leaving a lasting message on my heart. The reception was absolutely stunning, the venue, the decorations, the flowers, the food, the music, our guests were perfect. The color combination we chose were so ideal for a February wedding, the different shades of purples, navy blue and gold just made everything stand out. Almost a year and a few months of planning had now become a reality and I was so satisfied with how everything turned out, but still nothing is more beautiful than the love my husband and I share.

Don’t Forget the Groom BOUTONIERRES
W
vith modern day grooms wanting more and more to show off their style, be unique, and make a statement on their wedding day we have begun to see an influx of new trends arising. From the bridal runway to that walk down the aisle dapper gents are quickly catching up to their female counterparts and upping the ante with their tailored jackets, bold patters, and bright colors. Recently we have also seen the humble single bud boutonniere transformed into something that truly makes our handsome grooms stand out when saying “I Do!” Encourage your groom to show off his quirky style with fun cufflinks, patterned jackets, non-traditional colors, and definitely don’t forget the flowers….

he day I had been waiting for was finally here. All of my hopes and dreams for the man that I would marry were realized on that day. I could not wait to walk down the aisle and meet the man that was my answered prayer. In front of our wonderful and loving family and friends, we were joined in Holy Matrimony by Father Roy Snipes and were serenated by the wonderful Hector Guerra and Mariachi Continental. The vision for the reception was for it to be a timeless and romantic affair. When we walked into our wonderful venue for our preview, it was picture perfect! Over 1000 candles lit up the gorgeous space, white and black décor and touches of gold made the ballroom look so classic and elegant, just like I had pictured it to be. We had the time of our lives as we danced the night away and could not help feel so loved and blessed to celebrate our marriage with our loved ones. Cheers to forever!

Will You Be Attending? INVITATION ETIQUETTE
Save-the-Dates Save-the-dates are casual, enjoyable announcements of your engagement with your wedding date! It’s a less formal way to let your friends and family know that you are ready to take the next step in life as a married couple and to prepare for the big celebration. These are generally sent out 6-8 months before the wedding, 12 months if you are having a destination wedding. Save-the-dates are sent to everyone you plan to invite.
Invitations The wedding invitation is a statement all on its own. It conveys the style and formality of your wedding as well as provides the necessary information of your celebration, with date, time, location, and reply information. The invitations are sent approximately 8-10 weeks before the wedding, 12 weeks for a destination wedding.
Beautiful and quality stationery is used in the wedding invitation. Typeface, or font, and special techniques are used for printing invitations as well. This can include letterpress, embossing, engraving, calligraphy, or digital printing.
Thank You Cards Thank you cards are a thoughtful and personal way to show your sincere gratitude to your friends and family who joined you in your wedding celebration and for their generous gift. Normally blank stationery, they should be simple, elegant, and handwritten. Order a quantity of these when you order your save-the-dates; the earlier the better. It is good etiquette to send a thank you note within 2 weeks of receiving a gift before the wedding, while a thank you note should be sent no later than one month after your honeymoon for gifts received the day of the wedding.

any couples today are opting for outdoor weddings, which although beautiful come with their own set of challenges. Innovative Architecture RANCHO GUADALUPE
R
ancho Guadalupe is the Rio Grande Valley’s newest hidden gem. As part of the RGV Special Event Centers family, you can expect nothing less than elegance. Although construction on the property began in 2014 the doors opened to the public in January of 2018. The exquisite architecture captures rustic details of early Pueblo dwellings and mixes with a contemporary style exterior. The goal was to bring the outdoors in and use as much natural light as possible, drawing inspiration from Italian villas and Californian contemporaries.
The event center and rental spaces are nestled on the 1400 acre property. Available spaces include the large Event Center with a capacity of 576, the quaint chapel which seats 60, 2 beautiful guest homes, and various spaces for photo opportunities. Lake front views are very enticing for couples when choosing their venue, as well as the open air concept, giving couples an indoor or outdoor option when choosing the property. Rancho Guadalupe offers peaceful and private surroundings and prides itself on its pristinely manicured grounds. With impressive scenery, beautiful spaces and superb service, Rancho Guadalupe is an excellent choice when planning your special event.

Checking In or Checking Out? HOTEL ACCOMMODATIONS
I
f you have ever attended a wedding out of town, then you know the difficulty of reserving a room for overnight accommodations. If your guest list is significantly high, consider reserving a block of hotel rooms for a simple and easy reservation process. The number of rooms will be based on the number of out of town guests invited. If it is a large number, consider booking with two or three hotels in the same area.Inquire about the best deals for those who book in the room block for your event. Some hotels offer a discount rate, a free room for you and your fiancé, or maybe no discount at all. Confirm the exact check-in and check-out times as they may affect when your guests will arrive. Depending on the times, your guests will know whether to check-in the day of or day before the wedding. Some hotels offer shuttle service with
notice and complimentary breakfast, perfect convenience for your guests. One expense to look for is “attrition”, a penalty fee for unused and non-booked rooms. If you can’t avoid signing this clause, make sure your contract includes a provision with a deadline to adjust the room blocks. It will give enough time for guests to reserve, and you to make any final changes. Book a few months in advance to avoid unavailable rooms and inquire about suitable room rate fees. Remember to give the hotel staff a thank you note for their services and hospitality. Without them your guests would not have a warm and comfortable bed to curl up in after a long night of wedding festivities!

Sara Vicinaiz & Erik Anderson Photography by ALAA MARZOUK PHOTOGRAPHY
JANUARY 6, 2018
O
n the morning of January 6, 2018, Sara Isabel Vicinaiz and Erik Vincent Anderson professed their love in front of their close family and friends at the historic Casa De Palmas Renaissance in McAllen, TX. As luck would have it, they were the first couple to be married on the 100th year anniversary of the historic hotel. The wedding ceremony where Sara and Erik exchanged their vows was in the Ruby Red Ballroom. The couple, both musicians, chose music for their ceremony by their favorite composer, Johann Sebastian Bach. Following the wedding ceremony, the wedding party and guests went upstairs to the Royal Palm Ballroom for a lunch reception. Once the guests were seated, the couple walked into the ballroom for their first dance to the classic Spanish song, “La Paloma”. The wedding party and guests enjoyed lunch, dessert, and congratulatory toasts of champagne while listening to Spanish music by a classical guitarist. After a siesta, the couple proceeded to the bride’s parents home in Palmhurst for a Mexican buffet dinner to relax with family and friends late into the night. The couple then took an early flight to Hawaii the next morning on an unforgettable honeymoon in paradise.

The Last Hoorah! BACHELOR & BACHELORETTE PARTIES
W
edding season has arrived — and with it, an onslaught of bachelor parties. The bachelor party, however, goes back much further than you’d expect. It’s rooted in ancient history — as early as the 5th century B.C. It is believed that the ancient Spartans were the first to make a celebration out of the groom’s last night as a single man. Spartan soldiers held a dinner in their friend’s honor and made toasts on his behalf. Since then, the events have generally grown more raucous. In the past, a bachelor party could commonly involve a black-tie dinner hosted by the groom’s father, with toasts to the groom and the bride. Bachelor parties are now as diverse as the bachelors involved, ranging from Las Vegas trips to a casual party with friends and/or the fiancée. First and foremost, the event is an important step in saying goodbye to one’s single life and relieving prewedding jitters. There doesn’t even have to be a party: some men now opt for “groom’s showers,” in which they acquire their own dowry of foosball tables and power tools.
CELEBRATE YOUR BIRTHDAY, WEDDING OR FAREWELL WITH US BOOK NOW!
By the sexual revolution of the 1960s, women had launched their own version of the prewedding festivities: the bachelorette party. Prior to the late 19th century, women were limited to bridal showers, the main function of which was to acquire a dowry and gifts to prepare them for marriage. Bachelorette parties allowed women the opportunity to express their own freedom. Other couples, chose to celebrate their last night together in combined stag and doe parties — an idea that’s grown popular as more couples live together and marry later in life.

La Tornaboda LET THE PARTY CONTINUE
T
ranslated to English, it means something like a wedding return, but la Tornaboda is actually quite familiar to American couples. It’s a smaller gathering of close family and friends that takes place after the larger wedding reception, something we’d liken to an after party. The tradition began in Mexican communities where weddings were essentially an open invitation for all to come and eat and dance, so a reception might be hundreds strong. La Tornaboda allows couples to celebrate with their nearest and dearest after the bigger fiesta is done.
The ‘Tornaboda’ is still celebrated in various neighborhoods. They keep on celebrating untilthe very early hours, sometimes even long enough to see the sun come up the next day! For these celebrations, there must definitely be a “levanta muertos menu” at 3 or 4 in the morning, literally
a “wake the dead” menu, for those who want to keep on partying, as well as for those who have partied too much and need sustenance. In Yucatán, it is traditional to serve “cochinita pibil” (annatto-marinated pork) either in tacos or in “tortas”, together with cold beer. Depending on the region you’re in, the menu and customs vary, for example if in Queretaro, the “trasnochados menu” (an afterhours menu) consists of gorditas made of cheese or combined with pork meat. In Mexico City and surrounding areas “tacos de canasta”, these are more often referred to as tacos al vapor, since they are “steamed,” or tacos sudados, since their texture is consequently “sweaty.” Long hours in sweltering conditions allow the taco fillings to soak the tortillas, adding a glistening appeal. In other areas this menu would be the infamous “chilaquiles” which is a corn tortilla based dish.

The tortillas are sliced up, sautéed in a red or green tomato & chilies sauce, dressed with cheese, onion, and sour cream. Some local favorites are the “Pozole” (traditional Mexican soup), Tamales, and Menudo. These are great comfort food choices, deep seeded in tradition, which bring families together in celebration. Other delicious Mexican food you can find at a Tornaboda include: OO Birria (goat, beef, or chicken spicy stew)
OO Guisos en salsa verde or salsa roja (meat stews prepared in green or red tomato sauces) OO Sweet or savory tamales OO Chiles rellenos (poblano peppers stuffed with meat stew or cheese, battered, fried and served with tomato sauce) OO Chiles en nogada (poblano peppers stuffed with minced meat covered in a walnut sauce sprinkled with pomegranate)
OO Braised pork carnitas OO Cocteles de mariscos (cold and hot seafood soups) OO Pozole, a hominy soup or stew served with meat OO Pipian (mole type sauce over chicken or beef)

he day was upon us, we had everything set. I could hardly contain my emotions as my future wife walked towards me to the sounds of a beautiful string quartet. As our guests witnessed our first kiss as husband and wife, our getaway vehicle was just pulling up, a perfectly preserved white 1949 Bentley. We hopped in but not before an unforgettable balloon release. A few hours and a million pictures later we finally arrived at the reception. Our guests were definitely in for a treat, we had an array of party favors, a photo booth and even a tequila shot cart for the post dinner dance.

rowing up, my mother and grandmother were my biggest inspirations to bake. I started making my daughters’ birthday cakes when they were little girls and people kept urging me to open my own bakery. As a hobby, I continued to make cakes for special friends and family, but it wasn’t until four years ago that I took it to the next level and started to take orders. It’s an incredible feeling seeing my clients smile and be satisfied with my unique confections.

he day before our wedding McAllen was covered in a white, glistening powdery blanket of snow and I saw it as a blessing from my late grandmother. Family from Washington and Mexico came pouring in along with the snow.
The day of the wedding arrived with the sun shining. I was as nervous as I’m sure every bride is the morning of their wedding. I felt like I was floating on clouds during the Catholic ceremony with beautiful violin music before we were sent off with barrage of bubbles. Our reception was a blast, and we danced the night away with our family and loved ones. We will be forever thankful to our wedding guests for accompanying us on one of the happiest days of our lives.

lanning a wedding can often be a hectic time for a bride, there are so many details to take care of! While the turmoil of wedding planning can cause easily a lot of stress, it is important to take time to care for yourself. These tips can provide the perfect amount of relaxation for when the planning process gets to be too much! OO DON’T BE AFRAID TO DELEGATE You can’t handle everything by yourself -- as super as you may be. Weddings are major endeavors, so enlist friends and family to help make place cards, tie bows onto favors, and run errands. OO STAY CONNECTED WITH YOUR FIANCE Under the pressure and stress of planning a wedding, it’s easy to lose touch with the person you love most -- your groom-to-be. Schedule date nights, be it a dinner out or a movie in, to squeeze in some quality alone time. OO MEDITATE It’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Clear your head of worries. OO SOAK IN THE TUB A nice, hot bath will relax your muscles and your mind. For optimal stress-quenching results, add a bath salt that’ll moisturize your skin and help you loosen up with a soothing scent. OO READ A BOOK There’s no better time to score a page-turner than the few months before the wedding day. A good book can take you to another world for a while and give your scattered brain a rest. OO TAKE CARE OF YOUR YOURSELF If you haven’t already upped your prewedding workout routine, here’s good reason to: Exercise has positive emotional and psychological effects. OO TAKE A YOGA CLASS Or better yet, sign up for a package of yoga classes a month or two before your wedding.
1 1 4 CELEBRATES 15 YEARS • VALLEYWEDDINGPAGES.COM
OO START A JOURNAL There are books specially targeted to guide you and your partner with pages that prompt you to document everything from how you met to your shared future goals. OO GET A MASSAGE The perfect way to relieve tension. Why not try a technique you’ve never experienced before. OO HIT THE SPA Find a spa in your area that offers a day package (some even offer special bridal packages), sign up for treatments that you love or have never tried before, and enjoy a day of total relaxing indulgence.
& relaxation for the mind and body

y husband and I tied the knot on December 16, 2017, after ten years of dating. On the morning of our wedding day, my bridesmaids joined me and my family at our house for a light breakfast and mimosas, while we waited to get hair and makeup done. My husband spent his morning getting ready with his immediate family (including our pup!). Our Catholic marriage ceremony took place at 4 pm, and we were blessed by the presence of many friends and family members. The celebration continued with our reception at beautiful event center. The night was filled with great food, a candy bar, photo booth fun, live music, and dancing. To my surprise, my husband and his brother joined the live band onstage with their saxophones and performed for our guests-- the highlight of the night for me! To conclude our momentous day, we enjoyed a sparkler send-off.

Musical Synergy STARLIGHT ORCHESTRA
T
he Starlight Music banner with its successful Quartet and Orchestra is a product of the combination of passion and vision of guitarist and musician Rafael Collado. The music aficionado, who hails from Mexico City and has been on the stage for over 10 years, sought to replicate the soul and vibe of the Austin live music scene in the Rio Grande Valley, including its unique synergy between a band and its audience, producing engaging performances. Using his infamous attention to detail and presentation, Collado outlined a fun but elegant concept that elevated popular music as an art-form. After finding a rotation of the finest musicians in the region, Starlight Quartet came together and found its sound in 2013. Performing at special events and various RGV staples such as Santa Fe Steakhouse, Cobbleheads, Bodega Tavern & Kitchen, and The Patio on Guerra, the success of Starlight Quartet led to the expansion into a new performance experience with the Starlight Orchestra, a larger ensemble enriched with percussions and lush female vocals. Thanks to Collado’s focus and passion, Starlight Quartet and Starlight Orchestra continue to bring music to life all across the Rio Grande Valley. “Our repertoire has been carefully curated in order to provide a unique show. We insist on playing the music that we love playing, hoping that our passion translates into a more fun and honest entertainment experience. The way we see it, there is a space and an audience for every type of band. Our goal has always been to offer something that is not being offered anywhere else; this allows us to not have to compete for your preference.” -Rafael Collado.

I
t was so hard for me to comprehend that I was going to marry the man of my dreams; a true soulmate to me in every way and my lifetime companion. I had been a widow for more than 8 years, and I was raising two teenage boys. It was very difficult at times but we made it with God’s help. We were a little triangle of safety and the idea of bringing a man into our lives was fantastic and scary at the same time. Because of that, it was very important to us that my sons felt that they were a significant part of our wedding ceremony. Michael bought the boys beautiful rings with a cross on them, and it was his decision to exchange rings with the boys after our double ring ceremony. The weather was just perfect that day. I knew God was smiling on us and the life decisions we were making that day. My oldest son Miles walked me down the aisle to Michael. It was very special because he was basically saying, “Here is our mom, please love her and care for her the way she deserves.” After the ceremony we headed to our Gatsby themed reception. We had our first dance as Dr. and Mrs. Fuqua, and then I danced with each of my sons, my oldest crying tears of joy. He told me that night that he had never known if he would see me smile again. Our wedding night was a perfect night that we will never forget, the kind that makes you truly believe in “Happily Ever After”.

he name Mariachi brings to mind a dynamic fiesta with friends and family dancing away to a band, dressed to the nines in charro suits and sombreros. Since the 19th century Mariachi has been a prevalent form of entertainment in various regions of Mexico due to its Hispanic folk musical style, combining soothing strings with the brilliance of horns and deep guitars for a unique sound. While there is now formal training available in high schools and colleges, most Mariachi musicians are taught these familiar songs from familia, passed onto each generation. Along with the formal teachings of such musicianship, Mariachi music is performed with a drive and passion that brings the cancion to life. This passion contributes to various song styles from huapangos and boleros to romances and baladas, setting the ambiance for any occasion.

Coming of Age HISTORY OF QUINCEAÑERAS
Q
uinceañera is defined as the Spanish feminine form of “fifteen-year-old;” also called fiesta de debutantes, baile de debutantes, fiesta de quiñce, fiesta de quiñceaños, quiñceaños,or simply quiñce. Whatever you call the event, it’s a celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in parts of Latin America and other Spanish-speaking regions. Quinceañera celebrations vary significantly from country to country, with some having more religious overtones than others. Nevertheless, this birthday is celebrated differently from any other because it marks a young girl’s coming of age - the transition from childhood to young womanhood. Ancient Latin myths tell us about how girls were prepared to be married by the age of fifteen or else become nuns. In the years leading up to their fifteenth birthday, girls were taught by elder women to cook, weave, and rear children so they would be prepared for the expectations of married life.
As outdated as those teachings seem today, native culture still influences the spirit of Hispanic life. Traditions rooted in gratitude, love, commitment, and family pride are central to quinceañera celebrations, whether they are manifested in church ceremonies or as grand outdoor fiestas. After all, for Latinos la familia extends far beyond household relatives to include abuelos and bisabuelos, tios and tias, primos and primas, padrinos and madrinas, compadres and comadres, and often their church family as well. The young honoree traditionally wears a ball gown, with her court (special friends and close cousins invited to share the spotlight) wearing formal dresses and tuxedos. These guests usually receive small tokens to commemorate the occasion. In like manner, gifts for the honoree are distinctive treasures selected for their precious relevance to the quinceañera custom.

Interestingly, many local families today are merging their Hispanic and American heritages by choosing to celebrate a Sweet Sixteen. For a Sweet Sixteen party, families often do the full-blown religious ceremony, a reception and dance, a tiara with the number 16, and more. The Valley Wedding Pages encourages families to select the customs that are particularly meaningful for them, adding to and personalizing as they wish. These decisions are what make the coming-of-age celebration unique and memorable for all participants.

Maritzah Welton
M
aritzah’s desire to have a quinceañera started when she first tried on her mother’s quinceañera dress at the age of five and immediately fell in love. Her parents, Irasema Trevino & Maurice Welton, started planning her event as soon as she turned thirteen to make her special day everything she hoped for. Maritzah is currently a freshman at IDEA College Preparatory in Donna and an honor roll student. She is very energetic and plays varsity volleyball, basketball, and soccer. For the past two summers she has volunteered as a Junior Staff member at the Boys and Girls Club of America in McAllen. Right after her Quinceañera, she was inducted to the National Hispanic Institute and will be participating in the Texas Great Debate this summer. She has her sights on UCLA to major in political science and eventually hopes to become a lawyer, judge, or elected public official. When searching for her perfect quinceañera gown, Maritzah had the opportunity to try on several different dresses but in the end fell in love with a jade and gold creation. She loved the corset bodice, the jewels and beading, and added bonus of pockets! Her tiara was the perfect finishing touch to make her feel like a queen. When the day finally arrived, she had over fifteen of her closest friends waiting for her arrival. The guests boarded the party bus, dancing on their way to grab ice cream and take pictures with the birthday girl. After arriving to the venue, the ceremony started by a special blessing given by Pastor Andy Leos with advice and prayers.

Afterwards, the presentation started with her five closest friends as damas. Maritzah then made her grand entrance, coming down the grand staircase to where her parents waited. She danced with her father to “Isn’t She Lovely” by Stevie Wonder and ended with “We are Family” by Sister Sledge. Then it was time for her to dance her waltz to “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith. Maritzah and her damas practiced for weeks to make sure the presentation was as memorable as could be. As dinner ended, the guests had an opportunity to enjoy a selection of desserts carefully selected and prepared for the special occasion. Maritzah then thanked her parents, family, and friends for making her feel special on her birthday. Her surprise gift was comprised of beautiful jewelry, a paid driving school course, and tickets to see Niall Horan in concert. Close family and friends were invited to the after party for traditional menudo, tamales, and barbacoa at the quinceañera’s home. Maritzah and closest friends continued celebrating and dancing on the party bus, never wanting the night to end.

xactly 1,297.7 miles separated Monica and Darryl. Darryl was a retired Police Officer and business owner in Phoenix AZ while Monica was experiencing great success in Brownsville as an entrepreneurial businesswoman. Little did they know their paths would cross in March of 2016 in Orlando FL. They were attending a John Maxwell Conference. During that time they did not speak much during the conference. Casual hellos were exchanged but nothing more. They are both certified members of The John Maxwell Team and as a result they reconnected an entire year later on Facebook in 2017. Monica was a potential client of Darryl’s. Monica was just learning English and Darryl did not know any Spanish. They made the impossible possible by helping one another communicate and breaking the language barrier. Once they began to communicate it became very evident that this was much more than a business relationship. They both decided they wanted to be together but did not want a long distance relationship. So, Darryl moved his business to the valley and erased that 1,297.7 miles that was between them. They built a beautiful relationship and In February of 2018 they attended The International John Maxwell Conference together. While attending an executive reception Darryl gave a short speech in front of world renowned leadership expert John C. Maxwell, his faculty, and over 150 executives. Then without warning he got on one knee to propose while a camera crew videoed the entire event. They met at the world’s largest Marriott and found one another among thousands of other people, they got engaged at the world’s largest Marriott in front of the world’s number 1 leadership expert, but they will be holding hands and sharing their vows in front of the world’s best family and friends right here in the Rio Grande Valley!

Rosenda Martinez & Israel Vela Photography by ANAHI WEDDINGS
I
t was the summer of 2006 when new sophomore Rosenda received a friend request from a mutual friend, Israel, on the then-popular MySpace site. After exchanging a few messages Israel couldn’t contain his attraction to Rosenda and eagerly offered her his number. One awkwardly cute phone conversation led to another one that had them on the phone for hours! It was a new experience for the pair and all walls were brought down as they got to know each other. A short time later the boy from Mercedes and the girl from Weslaco finally met in person, and months later they officially became a couple. Throughout high school she would attend every single one of his football games, and he took her to her prom, and when the pair attended separate colleges they kept their love strong when Israel would travel back and forth from Kingsville to the Valley on his days off to visit Rosenda. The couple had often discussed marriage with Rosenda determined to obtain her college education before they tied the knot. Respecting her wishes, Israel eagerly waited until the day he could pop the question…Fast forward to 2016 on the couple’s ten year anniversary, Rosenda woke up that day not feeling particularly well, but ignored her discomfort and got herself ready for a lovely dinner with Israel. Stating that they were going to meet up with friends first, she didn’t think anything of it until they arrived at an unfamiliar but picturesque bed and breakfast hidden in Los Fresnos. As they stepped out of the car Rosenda became nervous but excited, getting an inkling of where the evening was taking them. He led her down a charming pathway lined with lanterns, a sign reading “Loved you yesterday, love you still, always have, always will”, and pictures of the couple throughout their relationship. By the time they reached a quaint little archway Rosenda was in tears. Her favorite flowers, Casablanca lilies and roses, waited for her along with a table that held the words “Marry Me”. Rosenda couldn’t contain her tears, especially when Israel got down on one knee and mentioned that the photos were just a part of their journey, and that he wanted it to continue and spend the rest of his life with her. She did not hesitate by saying “Yes!” It was a perfectly enchanting moment for the couple, and ten years was worth the wait.

ur connection was made through our mothers, who believed we shared some of the same interests and could be friends. After several months and brief conversations, John David finally got the chance to take me to Santa Fe Steakhouse for our first date. We enjoyed ourselves so much that Friday night, that we made plans to go out again on Saturday. And again, on Sunday. From the beginning, conversation flowed, and time passed as if we had known each other for years. It was apparent that we were in the early stages of building a lasting relationship. A year later—as we were celebrating our first anniversary in the private wine room at Santa Fe, John David got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. The moment was perfect, and I could not have been happier being surrounded by the people we love.

fter starting to date in September of 2017, we began praying with each other every night and spending more and more time together. We began to see continuous confirmation of God’s work in our relationship from both our family and friends and were both quickly convinced that we wanted to spend the rest of our lives together serving Christ. In late December, we began talking about engagement, but I did not expect that Josh already had a ring for the occasion. He conspired with my coworkers to plan an elaborate fake magazine photoshoot for my supervisor’s decor business at Fireman’s Park in McAllen. I arrived to find a table full of roses and candles with pictures of the two of us. Josh walked over to me, got down on one knee and asked me to marry him, quoting a line from my favorite movie Pride and Prejudice, “You have bewitched both body and soul, and I never wish to depart from you from this moment on.” I excitedly answered... Yes!

drian and I have been together for 9 years and for the past 5 years we have spent my birthday at South Padre Island. Well little did I know that this past birthday weekend was going to be one for the books. What started off as just a relaxing weekend surrounded by our closest friends turned into a weekend filled with a surprise birthday dinner with family and friends on Friday, to surprising me on Saturday with the most creative, sweetest, dreamiest engagement a girl could ask for. Adrian had thought of every single little detail and pulled it off perfectly. I am so excited for the next chapter in our lives and can’t wait for our wedding day to get here.
ntroduced by mutual friends, Josette and Juan met at Texas A&M University, destined to meet out of 50,000 students. Juan graduated a year before Josette and the two’s relationship began after Juan started law school at the University of Texas at Austin while Josette completed her degree. After many phone calls, text messages, and frequent visits between Austin and College Station, their friendship blossomed into a relationship.
In November of 2016, the couple took their first trip to Mexico City, and it would certainly be a trip that they would never forget. During a boat ride in Xochimilco, Juan dropped to one knee and asked Josette to marry him.

ive years ago, the week I moved to San Antonio, I went to a first Friday pub run with a co-worker. Our groups met at the first stop and we spent the rest of the night running and dancing together. We started dating and have been in each other’s lives ever since. We spent most of our relationship long distance as we finished our Master’s programs and worked in separate cities.
A year and a half ago in 2016, we went to Austin with my sister and two friends who were celebrating their wedding anniversary. That night, Peter decided to wake me up from a deep sleep to propose and celebrate with doughnuts from our favorite food truck. It was a big surprise for me, and wish I was more awake to remember the moment. We are very excited to continue our journey together into marriage and are ready to celebrate with everyone in June.

reston and I fell in love in Austin, and it has been our home for the last 10 years, so it only made sense that he would propose in Zilker Park with the most beautiful backdrop of downtown. It was our seven year anniversary, and to celebrate Preston made reservations at Perla’s. We had a couple of hours to enjoy before dinner so Preston suggested going to the park to take pictures. When we arrived at Zilker Park Preston, told me he wanted to take a photo of me facing downtown with my back towards him. He captured the most beautiful photo of him holding the ring behind me. After what felt like forever he told me to turn around and asked what I thought of the picture. While I was looking at the picture on his phone trying to figure out what was going on he was hiding the ring behind his back. Next thing I knew he was down on one knee asking me to marry him. We didn’t stay long at the park because Preston had another surprise. Our families and best friend were waiting for us at Perla’s to celebrate. It was the perfect proposal.

e met during our freshmen year of high school and to our surprise, it was love at first sight! Our love grew stronger throughout our high school career. Then, at a beautiful Christmas gathering at my family’s home, he surprised me with every girl’s dream, the opportunity to marry her true love. He got down on one knee, holding the ring box in the palm of his hands, and at that moment my heart pounded with excitement and joy. He popped the big question, “Will you marry me?” I immediately said yes! Now I am anxiously looking forward to becoming Mrs. Estrada.

ocelyne and Joshua, who are both affectionately known as ‘Josh’ by their friends and family, met in the summer of 2017 while attending Brigham Young University in Rexburg Idaho. They lived in the same housing complex, started hanging out, going to social events and having game nights. This gave them the chance to form a friendship before their first date in October. After a brief courtship, Joshua proposed atop the Great Wheel in Seattle while they were vacationing in Washington state this past March. They will be sealed in the San Antonio LDS Temple in August, with a ring ceremony and formal reception to follow in Jocelyne’s hometown of McAllen. The couple will live in Casper, Wyoming where they have already purchased a home with their two dogs, Lucy and Beyoncé. Jocelyne will finish her degree at the University of Wyoming and Joshua will help run his family’s chain of furniture stores.

t was December 31, 2015 going into the New Year of 2016 when my love, Baldemar Luna Jr. got down on one knee and asked me to Marry Him! I was completely shocked and apparently there were a million clues for me to figure it out that day and all of the family knew but me. I couldn’t have been any happier in how it all turned out and the fact that it was in front of all of our loved ones. Our love first began in middle school and little did we know we would still be madly in love so many years later. The rest as they say, is history. We can’t wait to say “I Do” in the beautiful city we reside in, Austin, Texas.

hey met through mutual friends on social media; not knowing that their close-knit group of friends had devised a plan to make their match happen. Despite both frequenting the same running spot for years, their paths never crossed until March 20, 2013. Both Letty and Joe still remember that fateful night when they first caught each other’s eyes (with Joe’s famous pickup line “Hey Letty is that you?”, as Letty never lets him forget). They instantly bonded, sharing each other’s lives effortlessly. Fast forward three years, and Joe proposed to Letty on March 13, 2016 in an intimate dinner surrounded by close family and friends. The romantic proposal was a total surprise to Letty, and Joe had planned an unforgettable night his future bride could never forget. Five years later looking back, their first date began the night they met. March 20, 2013 was the start of a beautiful friendship that flourished into a love story that will forever set in stone on August 18, 2018.

ateo, my now Fiancé, is a high school varsity football coach for PSJA North. One evening Mateo told me that at his last football game, we would be taking a group photo with all the coaches and their significant others. I found it odd that my family wanted to attend this game, not something they normally do. Even my mother who lives in San Antonio made the trip to attend. At the end of his game, myself and the ladies we waited by the gate to be let on the field. After the group photo everyone wanted to take a photo of Mateo and I. I was extremely confused. Everyone started yelling “turn around”. I finally turned around and saw a banner that the cheerleaders were holding that said “Will you marry me?” I looked at him and he was on one knee with a small box in his hands. It was a blur, but I remember nodding my head and saying “yes!” This proposal was so special and quite unexpected. Mateo doesn’t like the spotlight on himself but he put that aside for this special moment.
2nd Runner Up
Christina Saldivar & Jorge Garcia
J
orge and I first met in March of 2015, and as we got to know each other more, I learned that one of his favorite bands is Hall & Oats. Two years later, I bought him tickets to see them. As the band walked off stage, I looked at Jorge, eager to see how he enjoyed his birthday present. He was still sitting in his seat. I wasn’t sure if something was wrong, so I sat by him, nudged him and asked if he was feeling ok. Just then, the band returned for an encore. He finally perked up as the upbeat guitar intro rang out into the air of a song I actually recognized. I started dancing in my seat as Jorge leaned over and suggested we take a picture. I should have known something was fishy right then and there. Jorge NEVER likes taking pictures. I saw Jorge dig in his pocket, thinking he was getting his phone, only to turn back and find Jorge on one knee, with a ring in his hand. There in front of eight thousand strangers, Daryl Hall sang “You make my dreams come true” as Jorge made my dreams come true. We danced to the rest of the song as though it would play all night, just for us.
3rd Runner Up
Ginger Fetters & Matthew Garcia

fter three years of being just friends, Matthew grabbed me and said kiss me already. I was thinking what?? He said: “Ginger, I keep letting you go and you never come back to me. I have been waiting for you to realize I am here.” We have been inseparable ever since. On a recent trip to the beach, we witnessed a sea turtle release, and found a rare sand dollar and starfish. Our eventful day was about to get even better. I told Matthew that we should try to take some photos with the timer setting, the ocean in the background. He suggested we climb to the top of the dunes to get a better shot. On the way up, he dropped to the ground, praising God and asking for courage to ask me to be his wife. I turned around to him on one knee with the ring in his hand. He said: “Will you marry me?” I could not believe it. I am pretty sure I cried for 20 minutes straight after saying yes. The sun set behind Matthew, lighting him with the brightest light sent from heaven!
