ABOUT THE COVER

Westside Landing at Rough Hollow Lakeway STORY BY CATHIE PARSSINEN | PHOTOS COMPLIMENTS OF LEGACY COMMUNITIES

I

T IS NOT AT ALL surprising that Philip Jalufka, a co-principal of Legacy Communities, recently announced the company’s launch into residential development services as one of many real estate ventures slated in the coming year. Legacy Communities has partnered with Rough Hollow Developer Legend Communities to build Westside Landing, the final lakeside neighborhood in the premier Rough Hollow Lakeway community and, as Jalufka states, “one of the last lakefront neighborhoods on the South Side of Lake Travis”. I first met Philip Jalufka at a Fathers’ Day barbeque in 2005, jointly hosted by Sail & Ski Center and The Hollows on the North Shore of Lake Travis. At the time, Philip was working with Centex Destination Properties who had purchased the development formerly known as “NorthShore” and was in the process of transforming it into an exclusive master-planned waterfront community, renamed “The Hollows”. Since then, I have watched Jalufka’s entrepreneurial star rise in the celestial sphere of Austin real estate and numerous endeavors across the

country. That star shines in a constellation of its own that builds on the wealth of experience Jalufka has built spanning 15 years of proudly owning brokerage and sales companies that provide sales and marketing solutions for master planned developments across the U.S., Mexico, the Bahamas, Costa Rica, Panama and the Dominican Republic. Legacy Communities’ Co-Principal, Cass Brewer, met Jalufka nearly a decade ago while working at The Hollows on the North Shore of Lake Travis. Brewer was the Vice President of Development and Jalufka was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing overseeing the Texas Division for Fortune 100 corporation, Centex Destination Properties. After parting ways with Centex in 2008 Cass began a home building company known as Legacy DCS. Legacy DCS specializes in the design and construction of Peak Performance Lifestyle Homes™, thoughtfully crafted luxury homes that boast industry leading energy efficiency. Both Brewer and Jalufka share a passion for sustainable building practices, fine craftsmanship and innovative design concepts. They are excited to bring all of the functional area expertise together again, this time their way. Westside Landing arrival experience “We are thrilled to have the opportunity to create this lifestyle neighborhood within the Rough Hollow Lakeway community” said Philip Jalufka. “The entire Legend Communities Team has been amazing to work with for over a decade creating this very special place. This will be the final opportunity for a handful of discriminating homebuyers to acquire not merely a spectacularly elegant home on the South Side of Travis but also a socially and amenity-rich lakeside lifestyle.”

THE NUTS AND BOLTS OF WESTSIDE LANDING Westside Landing offers 41 homes adjacent to The Peninsula, Rough Hollow’s most exclusive neighborhood. All Westside Landing homes will

16 Waterways | Summer 2018

have lake access, and all are considered lakeside properties. Each home features farmhouse-inspired architectural design paired with three functional, threebedroom floor plans centered around outdoor living. Optional upgrades include kitchen and master bath packages, versatile casitas that can be used as guest houses, studios, offices, mother-in-law suites or “man caves.” Lifestyle options include plunge pools and outdoor entertainment areas with outdoor kitchens. All Westside Landing homes are “Peak Performance Lifestyle Homes™”, constructed with high-efficiency, green building elements and sustainable fixtures and finishes. They are the first homes in Rough Hollow with an optional net-zero capability, a solar energy package buyers can select that will eliminate electric costs after one year. “We really focused on creating a product that would complement the buyer’s lifestyle by positioning the home to maximize the views and sun orientation for energy efficiency,” said Cass Brewer, Legacy Communities’ co-principal. “We went into this project with a thorough understanding of the land and its composition and worked hard to make each home’s architecture fit its specific location.” Westside Landing is a lifestyle neighborhood, offering homeowners the full use of all Rough Hollow amenities, including the Rough Hollow Yacht Club and Marina, in addition to the extensive trail systems and hike-and-bike access throughout Rough Hollow. These amenities will also include full use of Highland Village, Rough Hollow’s water-themed amenity, with the Laziest River, splash pads, children’s pool, adult pool with swim-up bar, all-season pavilion with demonstration kitchen, village green and open-air marketplace where residents can relax, socialize, dine and play. Additionally, Westside Landing will have direct connectivity to community trails leading to the lake and a kayak launch with an overlook deck. The first homes are expected to break ground during the second quarter of 2018. Home prices start in the mid $600s, and Legacy is now accepting purchase agreements. For more information, contact the Westside Landing sales team at (512) 829-1478 or visit www.westsidelanding.com.

ORGEOUS spring weather on April 26 was Mother Nature’s gift to the Umlauf for the celebration of the 20th anniversary of its iconic Garden Party. Guests enjoyed a selection of fine wines and hearty brews along with tasty bites from some of Austin’s top restaurants. The Nash Hernandez Orchestra serenaded guests as they wandered through the museum’s lush grounds, taking in the prodigious work of Charles Umlauf. The annual garden party also serves as a fundraiser for the organization, featuring both silent and live auction items. On the occasion of its platinum anniversary, the party included a tribute to the people who were instrumental in creating this tradition: David and Sylvia Jabour, co-owners of Twin Liquors, a long-time sponsor of the party, along with Nick Van Bavel and Linda Butler Van Bavel. Just over 20 years ago, Linda was serving on the board when she approached the Jabours with the garden party idea. Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans for six years. During her tenure there, she contributed to the growth of the museum’s annual budget from $1.3 million to $3.2 million, from 15 staff members to over 40, and from 35,000 visitors to over 85,000 visitors annually. Story takes the reigns from Nina Seely, who left the post at the UMLAUF in November 2017, and from Pamela Owens, who served as interim executive director after Seely. Allyson Maxey, Garden Party Chair, and Lynnsie Jammal, Restaurant Chair, put together an evening to delight all the senses. The breathtaking setting, food and music were enhanced by an exhibition of fashion curated by a sense of style that is uniquely Austin. Waterways has featured two formal fashion shows in this issue . . . the third was the show-stopping, “garden party” attire on display, not on a red carpet, but under a canopy of green at the Umlauf.

HE 2018 Butterfly Brunch benefitting the Lake Travis Education Foundation (LTEF) took place at the Rough Hollow Yacht Club in midApril and was once again a tremendous success. Breathtaking lake views set the backdrop for the runway fashion show. The lush landscape was in full bloom, providing rich colors and beautiful greenery for this annual event. Attendees enjoyed a brunch buffet from Canyon Grille that was nothing short of fabulous, but all eyes were on the catwalk. Models took the stage wearing apparel and accessories from some of West Austin’s best shops: Nordstrom, Oh Yeah! Boutique, Gatsby’s, LURE by Y&F, ADORN Boutique, Trinkets and Butterflies, The Boutique on Stonelake, fab’rik, Zosia Candela and Sage Threads & Co. Light and airy fabrics, perfect for the social lakeside lifestyle, were front and center. The models demonstrated how these fabrics can be gracefully worn for any occasion, from cocktail attire and men’s suits to stay-at-home loungewear and weekend wear. Jumpsuits are a top trend for women in 2018, and the Butterfly Brunch showcased some fun and very wearable designs with full-length pants and with shorts that are suitable for all ages. Prints are also a top trend for spring/summer 2018. Any kind of stripe, pattern or floral is spot-on and trend-right. The fun didn’t end when the fashion show wrapped. Participants were able to

ACH YEAR, the Lake Travis Education Foundation embarks on a journey of planning its biggest fundraiser to support the students of E Q U A L H O U S IN the Lake Travis Independent School District, the LTEF Gala. The LTEF Board of Directors is happy to report the 2018 gala, ‘A Night Under the Star,’ Minimum depositMin of of F of February 16, 2018 on on the account. Offe raised an estimated $358,000. Held March 3 at the J.W. Marriott, lead sponsors of the event included Lexus of Lakeway (presenting sponsor) and Rough Hollow (VIP/entertainment sponsor). As it turns out, the 2018 gala would be LTEF Executive Director Kevin Claypool’s final event as a school district and foundation employee. Dr. Claypool announced in April he had accepted the position of Chief Relationship Officer for a consulting firm with offices in Austin and College Station. “Kevin has done so much for the district and for the foundation during his tenure with us,” said Holly Morris-Kuentz, Lake Travis ISD Assistant Superintendent for Administrative and Community Services. “We will miss him, and we wish him the very best in his new career opportunity.” As school district and education foundation officials work to find a new executive director, make no mistake: Lake Travis superintendent Brad Lancaster, the school board and the administration are committed to student safety.

“Now more than ever, those two words are at the forefront of our daily routines across each of our campuses and district facilities,” said Dr. Lancaster. “Thoughts and prayers for the students and families in Parkland, Florida continue to fill our hearts and minds. The sights and sounds of that horrific event, and of other school tragedies in recent years, remind us that no community is immune from violence. As superintendent, I understand the local concerns for student safety that our parents have shared with our Sara and Todd Wagner, Eric Racca, Vasili Triant school board, campus principals and me.” Amy and Pete Chase Audra Randall, Sean Sutton, Director; Allison Winslett The superintendent reassures us that district officials work cooperatively with local law enforcement officials and first responders and maintain regular communication about safety planning and ongoing safety concerns throughout the year. There is a multi-agency Emergency Operation Procedure (EOP) at every school for a range of possible scenarios including, but not limited to, natural disasters, fires, chemical spills, intruders, and active Billy and Michelle Johns shootings. Lake Travis ISD staff are trained annually on these emergency Cory and Brandi Fleitz, Laura and Michael Hahn-Conti campus plans, and staff and students practice safety drills, including lockdown drills, which would be used in the event of an active shooter. Each campus conducts lockdown drills twice per school year. With funds from its 2011 Bond program, the district upgraded campus entrances with secured vestibules and Meghan and Albert Teira installed network cameras to monitor Jeff and Katie Brinkman; Jaime and Tim Cardinal Hal and Kathy Lanham entry into its buildings. All facilities have identification badge reader access for all exterior doors, and all school buildings have a locked, single entry access through the front door during the school day, strategic perimeter fencing, and monitored drop off and pick up zones. In addition to these measures, district staff have completed the latest state-required school safety audit and submitted it to the Texas School Safety Center. “No one can ever absolutely guarantee the safety of others in any situation,” Dr. Lancaster added. “However, I want parents to know that we have numerous protocols and practices in place to help deter incidents that would compromise student and staff safety. We also have resources in place to respond to and mitigate such threats. The Big Pink Give STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

O Dean and Kristi Leipsner

Andy Price, Jen Felch

N APRIL 12, influential actors in the breast cancer support movement mingled with survivors, fighters, donors and advocates on the grand verandah and courtyard at The Hotel Granduca to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Susan G. Komen Austin. Over that 20-year period, Komen Austin has raised more than $11.7 million and funded 230,000 services for the Austin breast cancer community. In a setting inspired by the old world charm of an Italian villa, guests were asked to embrace a new model of a give-based auction, inspired by giving to others. The iconic pink ribbon symbolizes strength through adversity and has become a call to action for Komen and all who support the cause of ending breast cancer forever. Diamonds Direct in the Domain gifted Komen Austin two, custom-made, pink ribbon diamond and pink sapphire necklaces (totaling $11,000 in value—one for the winning bidder and one for the top survivor fundraiser at Race for the Cure. The item brought $100,000, the largest single gift in the history of the seven-year event. “Because of our generous corporate sponsors, we were able to begin the Big PINK Give event with all costs covered, which means everything raised at the event went towards the cause,” said Suzanne Stone, Komen Austin Executive Director, who conceived of the vision of the give-based auction. Komen Austin extended special thanks to presenting sponsors Texas Oncology and Dell, Inc. and to Jaguar Land Rover Austin, St. David’s Healthcare, St. David’s Foundation, and Diamonds Direct, among many other generous Austin-based businesses.

BioVitality BIOVITALITY OFFERS tailored care to optimize your health with bioidentical hormone replacement, weight management, and nutritional supplementation, restoring your youthful energy. Our physician and experienced staff are committed to providing a personalized treatment to achieve optimal heath. Dr. David Weiler is a board-certified physician who treats hormonal and weight issues. Dr. Weiler’s personalized, integrated approach features a combination of bio-identical hormone therapy, weight loss and nutritional supplementation. BioVitality uses bioidentical, or “natural,” hormone therapy that replaces the hormones your body needs to function. Only bioidentical hormones can follow the normal metabolic pathway and be broken down into other hormones and derivatives needed by the body. Bioidentical hormones are, molecule-by-molecule, exactly the same as the hormones present in the human body. Because hormones affect receptors throughout your body, hormone levels must be correct for you to feel your very best. BioVitality offers medically supervised rapid weight-loss plans, structured fasting plans, and helpful weight-loss tools to boost metabolism, increase energy, lower cholesterol and blood pressure. Medical weight loss is an effective option for individuals who haven’t had success with other methods, and for people who need their health and safety monitored every step of the way. BioVitality also provides nutritional supplementation through IV therapy. This delivery method provides the mind and body with the nutrients that strengthen the immune system to fight stress, illness, and allergies. Serving men and women from the Austin and surrounding areas of Texas, the experts at BioVitality are here to promote health and wellness. 12912 Hill Country Boulevard, Ste F-238, Bee Cave, Texas 512-535-1088 www.biovitalitywellness.com

HIS DESTINATION-THEMED show transported the audience to four vacation hot spots—Jamaica, Barcelona, the French Riviera and 4th of July in the USA. Co-chairs Marianna Dydek Waite, Lorrie Groover and Julie Mack chose music to match the destination, and UT alum and Houston-based designer Elaine Turner styled the show with the latest trends in fashion, footwear, shoes and jewelry. Members of The 8212 Club took to the stage to model summer’s hottest looks. What did the show unveil? The cold shoulder is back and stronger than ever with so many variations, from grommets and bell sleeves to ribbons and ruffles. Also big on the runways in Austin and around the world are wide-leg pants, distressed denim and high waists, and Elaine Turner’s designs were spot-on and trend-right! Blush pink is here to stay, and the models sported a deeper, richer version of this Mary Lindenberg new neutral, giving it an updated, fresh look. Of course, we can’t Joyce Turner overlook canary yellow and navy-and-white stripes. Neither did Elaine Turner, who offers many options in these great, easyto-wear colors. With fashion trends like these, West Austin residents are sure to look glamorous this summer. See more of Elaine Turner’s fashions and accessories at www.elaineturner.com. Barbara Foster

HE TRAIL FOUNDATION celebrated the groundbreaking of its Trail Bridge at Congress Avenue project with a cruise on Lady Bird Lake from the Hyatt Regency to the construction site. The $2.5 million project, slated for completion this summer, will update a decades-old wooden bridge, add vital safety improvements, and create a scenic bat viewing area. The current aging infrastructure underneath the north side of the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge will be replaced with a new 14’ wide concrete and steel structure that will extend over the water similar to the Boardwalk, which The Trail Foundation completed in 2014 in collaboration with the City of Austin. In addition to the bat viewing area, the new 172-foot long pedestrian bridge will also enhance Trail safety for pedestrians and bicyclists by removing a blind curve on the existing structure, widening the pathway to allow cyclists and runners to pass each other safely without risk of collision. It will also make the area ADA-accessible, connecting the Trail to the Waller Creek area, and will lower the city’s maintenance costs. The Trail Foundation’s executive director Heidi Anderson noted, “This stretch of the Trail has remained the same for roughly 40 years. The Trail Bridge at Congress Avenue will increase the area’s safety, and further enhance the aesthetic and beauty of our city’s crown jewel.”

As board member and 15th anniversary committee co-chair Griffin Davis remarked: “With the growth of Austin, continued downtown residential and office development, and the completion of the Boardwalk, the Trail is being used more frequently, especially the areas east of Congress Avenue. The Trail Foundation is dedicated to keeping up with this growing demand, and continuing to protect and preserve this amazing public amenity.” Private donations make it possible for The Trail Foundation to preserve and enhance the Trail. Robert F. Smith, founder, chairman, and CEO of Vista Equity Partners in Austin, is the Trail Bridge at Congress Avenue’s leading sponsor with a donation of $1.25 million. “I am thrilled to support the construction of the new Trail Bridge at Congress Avenue, and I’m excited to work with The Trail Foundation to bring this important project to fruition,” Smith said. “Those of us lucky enough to call Austin home, and the many visitors to this city, use the Butler Trail at Lady Bird Lake every single day. that Tim and Laura battle so relentlessly to find a cure for this 100% fatal disease. And there has been progress! As Tim noted, “When we started Champions to CureDuchenne, there wasn’t a clinical trial in human boys . . . but today, multiple clinical trials are being conducted all over the world.” In 2016, using a new gene-editing technique, a team of scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center stopped the progression of Duchenne muscular dystrophy in young mice. And in April, 2018, Pfizer announced that the first participant for its US-based gene therapy trial was dosed at Duke University Medical Centre. The trial is assessing the Dr. Lori Hines, Cindy Yates, Michelle Long, Chad Haggli gene therapy in approximately 12 boys with Duchenne between the ages of 5 and 12 who are still able to walk. ARM LIVIN’ IS the life for me,” Oliver Wendell Douglas declared in the Green Acres theme song, while his wife Lisa proclaimed how much she just adored a penthouse view. Perhaps they would have found a perfect compromise with a home in the newly opened Farmhouse Collection at The Reserve at Lake Travis. The Reserve at Lake Travis launched its new Farmhouse Collection community of homes with an intimate gathering on a glorious, sunny afternoon in April. Guests toured models of the four spacious farmhouse-inspired homes available. The openconcept floor plans include plenty of designer finishes and features, such as multiple covered decks and patios, that allow residents to enjoy low-maintenance, lakeside living. Boasting Hill Country modern architecture, gorgeous courtyards, and lake or Hill Country views, the Farmhouse Collection homes are suited to provide either a relaxed primary residence or a second-home getaway in one of the finest resort communities on Lake Travis. Georgia Spiropoulos Just as The Reserve at Lake Travis didn’t skimp on any details with the lovely homes, the launch event organizers hit a home run with adults and kids alike with a delicious Ryan Taggart and Kingsley Gorley array of food and drinks, including ice cream sandwiches Drew McGrath from Moojo. Attendees were entertained throughout the day by Pauline Reese. The chance to ride one of three Texas longhorn steers, provided by Cross T Ranch, offered another highlight of the grand opening! The charming floor plans, gracious community amenities, and soothing Hill Country views of the Farmhouse Collection at The Reserve at Lake Travis will surely have Alex Bonughli some folks singing, “Good-bye, city life!”

TARTING LAST year, Amber Hart began organizing get-togethers of her girlfriends for wine and hors d’oeuvres or, if the meeting place was at a restaurant, dinner. Not only did these meetups allow busy friends to reconnect but they also promoted local business and a worthy cause or charity. Recently, friends gathered at the stunning new location of Plate, a Bee Cave restaurant beloved by fans of owner and Executive Chef, Dzintra Dzenis. Guests participated in a food drive for Lake Travis Crisis Ministries, and Noonday Collection, the honored business, hosted a trunk show of exotic jewelry and handbags from around the world. Noonday Collection promotes fashion locally by creating a fair trade marketplace for global artisan partners in some of the world’s most vulnerable communities. 2nd place: The Harvey Giving House

HE ANNUAL Lakeway Tea has a storied history. Since its inception in 2004, the Lakeway Activity Center offered the early venue for the event. After a one-year stint at the Lake Travis Event Center, the Lakeway Tea moved to its current home at the Waterfall Dining Room at The Hills Country Club. The tea was originally established to benefit Seton Shoal Creek Psychiatric Hospital. Last year’s tea benefitted Help Our Wounded, a local nonprofit that assisted wounded soldiers and their families. This year’s tea, co-chaired by Ann Neighbors and Rosie Babin, and supported in part by the Lakeway Church, raised donations to support victims of Hurricane Harvey. Co-chairs Ann Neighbors, Rosie Babin The event challenges design teams to let their imaginations soar, and they do! Design themes often unleash the wild side of a very creative group of Lakeway women! The motto of the Lakeway Queens table was: “When the Queen is Happy, There is Peace in the Kingdom.” The Lakeway Church table celebrated the upcoming royal wedding of Prince Henry of Wales to Meghan Markle. And with the authority granted to them by their divine status, their signage stridently declared the following: The Lord Chamberlain is commanded by The Queen to invite the Women of the Lakeway Church to the marriage of His Royal Highness Prince Henry of Wales, K.C.V.O. with Ms. Meghan Markle. 1st place went to Rainbow of Heroes & Hope, dedicated to Firefighters, Designers of The Harvey Giving House Seated: Carol Mitchum, Sharon Gilmore, Donna Kumar, Maggie Calbert, Kim Nearburg; Standing: Christine Wotkyns, Sally Barto, Janet Eddy, Pat Smith

Rise School’s 11th Annual Heart & Soul

Rise School alumni

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CATHIE PARSSINEN

F Board member and past Rise School Executive Director Emily Greer with Rise School child

OR PURE JOY, nothing beats the Heart & Soul Fashion Show of Rise School children held at the Annual Rise luncheon. This event deviates in wondrous ways from the carefully choreographed walks and pauses and poses of most fashion shows, for the Rise School models entertain a captive and enthusiastic audience with an unstaged look at their unique personalities. Whether they are dancing, waving, performing yoga poses, making a wild dash to the end of the runway to attempt to leap into a waiting mother’s arms or peeping shyly from behind the comfort of their daddies, they are unscripted and spontaneous. For this one day, the School might consider changing its name to the School of Rising Actors and Actresses, for many of the children exult in their star power and the spotlight. Board members, teachers and family members escorted the children down the runway. As he has done since its inception, Matt Swinney, founder of Austin Fashion Week, and parent of a Rise School alumnus, served as Emcee for the program and Silent Auction Advisor for the always delicious selection of designer handbags, footwear and jewelry. Rise School occupies an exceptional space of its own, as it is the only inclusion preschool in Austin. Clearly set forth in its statement of objectives: “Our mission is to provide the highest quality early childhood education for all children—gifted, traditional, and developmentally delayed—in an inclusive setting, where individualized learning techniques enable every child to achieve his or her maximum potential.”

Marlene Magierski spoke passionately about the benefits of the inclusion model embraced by the Rise School. As she pointed out, these children—of all abilities—learn early on to support others with differences, and not only to support them but to love them unconditionally. They learn the powerful gift of empathy, and they also learn patience. As she remarked, you can hear all these things happening in the voices you hear in the halls of the Rise School:

Ann Sweeney, Stacie Miller, Sarah Sweeney Cassie Bales, Ellen Hurt, Yuni Steen

Let me show you how to do that. I’m sad that you’re sad. Can I help you with that so that we can go play? A powerful model . . . for children and adults alike. Board member Bill Bayless, CEO American Campus Communities with Rise student
