THE HISTORY OF
Possum Kingdom Lake
C
reated in 1941 with the damming of the Brazos River, Possum Kingdom Lake is a popular hotspot for vacationers and locals who want to spend a day or week at the beach for a retreat from the hot
Texas sun. The lake, however, is more than a place to soak in the sun. Its history and the history of the land surrounding it dates back many years. It is said that Spanish explorers traveled through the
area, but they were not the first. Long ago, Native Americans of many tribes settled along the banks of the Brazos River, and many artifacts can still be found. Early cattlemen raised their herds and fought Native Americans and rustlers. Oliver Loving drove his first cattle herd to Loui-

siana from Loving Valley, which is located just below Morris Sheppard Dam. The dam, named after Sen. John Morris Sheppard, was the first ever built by the Brazos River Conservation and Reclamation District, later to become the Brazos River Authority. The dam is a heavily buttressed concrete structure with adjoining earth embankment and was built at a cost of $8.5

million. It is 2,747 feet long and has a maximum height of 189 feet; the spillway is 987 feet above mean sea level. The dam was ordered to be decommissioned in 2010. The lake and reservoir are owned and operated by the BRA. At first, PK Lake was
known primarily to area residents as a good place to go fishing or swimming on the weekends and holidays. As word of its attributes spread far and wide, the lake now draws visitors from across the state and nation. The lake is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Texas and has been featured
a surface area of 19,800 acres and a shoreline of 310 miles. Morris Sheppard Dam impounds 1.5 million acre-feet of water annually for municipal, industrial, mining, irrigation, flood-control,

recreational and powergeneration uses. Area hills and valleys, post oaks and cedars make a paradise for possums and many other types of wildlife around the lake. The dam has turned the once wild river into one of the premier recreational locations in the state, offering unlimited water sports opportunities, fishing and camping set amid the hills of one of the more pristine areas in the United States. With its popularity, businesses around the area cater to the needs of visitors. Resorts, from more rustic camps to comfortable hotels, are available. Restaurants offering a full variety of favorites on
both the east and west sides of the lake satisfy even the most finicky palate. For water enthusiasts, there are marinas, boat launches that are both public and private, scuba diving opportunities, water skiing, fishing, swimming and just relaxing by the water. Several boat rental businesses are located around the lake, offering personal water crafts, ski boats and party boats. The estimated annual visitors number is close to 1 million, and facilities to accommodate these visitors have grown dramatically over the last several years. The area was ravaged by wildfires in 2011
resulting in the loss of hundreds of thousands of acres of greenery and wildlife. More than 160 homes were destroyed in the fires, forcing locals to relocate until the fires subsided. Over the past few years, the twisted black trunks of the trees have steadily been surrounded by green grass and returning wildlife. Through the flames of the past, PK Lake has made its way back into the hustle and bustle of business and warmly greets visitors with its open and green camping grounds. Camping is abundant at PK, with several public-use camping areas on the water, and Sandy
Beach offers an area for that weekend trip to build sand castle, swim or just relax and enjoy the sun and water. On the west side, Possum Kingdom State Park adjoins the Cedar Creek area of the lake, offering camping, boat rentals and a site far removed from the hustle and bustle of the modern age. Texas Parks and Wildlife has served the fishing enthusiasts, stocking the lake annually with striper, native bass, largemouth Florida bass and rainbow trout. Area fishing guides, some being lifelong residents of the lake, are available for half-day or full-day fishing trips.

shore is made of large to cobble-sized rock. The lower end has scenic rock cliffs and bluffs, while the upper end speeds into shallower areas with shoreline vegetations. Points and drop-offs can be found throughout the lake. Many docks provide habitat for fish, and so do standing timber and laydowns. At certain times of the year, aquatic vegetation is also found. Brush piles and artificial fish attractors have been placed in the Cedar Creek are of the reservoir. Anglers may use GPS in conjunction with a fish finder to locate these structures. Largemouth bass can be found throughout the
lake and can be caught on any of the typical bass baits. Anglers should be prepared to fish 10 to 25-foot depths and use as light of a line as possible due to the clear water. They should also concentrate on submerged vegetation when found. Striped bass anglers look for birds feeding on bait driven to the surface by schools of hungry stripers. Striped bass do well on live shad or artificial bait. White bass action can be very good during prespawn and the spring spawning run, especially up towards the river mouth. Jigs and spoons or slabs are recommended baits for white bass.
Catfish action can be good for all species. Costello Island and above are likely locations to catch catfish. Cut bait, chicken livers, prepared stink bait, live shiners and/or sunfish are recommended baits for catfish fishing.
Crappie can be found around brush piles and docks. In spring, anglers can fish the backs of covers for spawning crappie. Crappie can be found at different depths depending on the time of the year and water conditions.

ake Graham is unique in that it is basically two lakes, Lake Eddleman and Lake Graham, connected by a canal. Lake Graham is located about 2 miles northwest of Graham in Young County. Eddleman Dam was built on Flint Creek in 1928 while Graham Dam was built on Salt Creek in 1958. Both creeks are tributaries of the Brazos River. The two lakes were connected via canal
sometime after June 1959. The project is owned and operated by the city of Graham. According to Handbook of Texas Online, “The lake was probably named for the brothers Edwin S. and Gustavus Graham, who purchased 125,000 acres of land near Graham in 1871.” Records indicate
Graham's Lakes TWO LAKES UNITED the construction for the original Eddleman Dam started in 1928 and was completed in 1929. Deliberate impoundment of water began that same year. Freese and Nichols were the design
engineers and WomackHenning Construction Company was the general contractor. The construction for Graham Dam started Sept. 17, 1956 and was completed in July 1958. During this construction phase, work began in 1957 and ended in 1958 to the raise the height of Eddleman Dam. Deliber-
ate impoundment of water began April 28, 1958. Freese and Nichols were the design engineers and Weldon C. Jourdan was the general contractor. The top of the earth-
fill dam is at elevation of 1,093.3 feet above mean sea level. The uncontrolled spillway is cut in the natural ground with crest at elevation of 1,076.3 feet above mean sea level. Although the maximum capacity is estimated at 195,000 acre-feet, Lake Graham contains a volume of 45,302 acre-
feet water encompassing 2,444 surface acres at the conservation pool elevation of 1075.0 feet. The drainage area is approximately 221 square miles. The maximum depth is 45 feet. Fishing The predominant fish species in the lake are largemouth bass, white and hybrid striped bass, channel catfish and white crappie. Hybrid striped bass and white bass fishing are rated good. Fishing for largemouth bass and crappie can depend on season and water level. Lake Graham is a power plant reservoir, but the plant operates only when demand is high so it does not provide consistent winter fishing. The hot-water discharge is located on the Eddleman portion of the reservoir. The lake offers a variety of cover including smartweed, bulrush, pondweed and lily pads. Anglers can also find buttonbush, boat docks, riprap, standing timber, brush, and black willow trees. Shoreline is rocky. The hot-water discharge is an excellent area to fish during the

The massive reservoir, created by damming the Brazos River, with its incredibly deep waters and its sheer cliffs, is a vacation paradise. The event, which starts off the series season, will take place Saturday, Sept. 2. Hell’s Gate will be the only stop in America, of seven global stops in this year’s series, which marks the 10th season of the cliff diving

Canoeing the Scenic Brazos River POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE
CAMPING PICNIC TABLES
DAM
Today the section of the Brazos just below the Morris Sheppard Dam offers canoeing enthusiasts a most rewarding view of rugged cliffs, high bluffs, and cross-timber terrain. Angling opportunities abound along the 20-mile stretch between the dam and Highway 4. There are no public campgrounds on the river, but numerous gravel bars can be used as overnight camp sites, although campers should be alert for possible rises of the river during rain storms or as the result of water released through the dam. Properly adjoining the river is privately owned. Campers are urged to clean up their sites and pack away any trash or refuse in order to preserve the pristine beauty of the region for others.

The Brazos River has one of the most extensive watersheds in Texas, and in the area surrounding Possum Kingdom, it provides spectacular scenery. Ages ago, Indians hunted along the banks of the Brazos and conquistadors explored its canyons. The fearsome Comanches once used the numerous hollows the river had carved from the native limestone as hide-outs from the U.S. Cavalry.
Water levels are unpredictable, however, the spring and fall seasons generally afford the best canoeing conditions. Canoeists should stay alert to rapidly changing water conditions and heed all warning signs. The river area can be extremely dangerous, with GARLAND CR. life-threatening stream flows and underflow currents. Stay out of restricted areas and always your life jacket. 3 mi. from dam

G
raford is the small town on State Highway 254 one passes through on the way to Possum Kingdom Lake. The quiet little community often goes unnoticed as travelers set their sights on PK’s many opportunities for vacation fun, but there is more to Graford than what meets the eye. Being situated at the halfway point between Graham and Weatherford, Graford got its name from the two bigger towns. In 1854, George R. Bevers surveyed a homestead at Flat Rock Crossing on Big Keechi Creek, three miles east of what was to become the town
site and, in 1855, he built a home that became a stopping place for travelers between Fort Belknap and Weatherford. A historical marker along Highway 254, east of Graford, marks the location. A store established by Ansell Russell and Willis Mills on the Fort Worth-Fort Belknap Road was the community’s first business. Texas Rangers who secured the release of white captive Cynthia Ann Parker, mother of Comanche chief Quannah Parker, met at the store to begin their quest.

OF
Graford
In 1894, William S. Green became Graford’s first postmaster and by 1920 the community had a population of 313. By 1940, it had incorporated and had a population of 804 and a bank had been established. The Weatherford, Mineral Wells and Northwestern Railroad completed 25 miles from Weatherford to Mineral Wells in 1891. The line was bought by the Texas and Pacific Railway Company in 1902 and
extended 18 miles from Mineral Wells to Graford in 1908. Twelve miles of track between Salesville and Graford were abandoned in 1936, as were eight miles between Mineral Wells and Salesville in 1941. In 1980, Graford’s population was reported as 495, and in 1990 it was 561. Graford is 12 miles east of Possum Kingdom Lake. Today the town of 571 inhabitants.

with an overhead clearance of about 10 feet to aid easy passage. The paths are accessible to hikers of a wide range of abilities. Most average no more than a gentle 5- to 12-degree slope. Other sections, such as the por-
tion that rises high above the lake to Johnson Peak, have more challenging slopes of up to 20 degrees.
Twelve trailheads are located at intervals to allow hikers the opportunity to travel as much or as little of the trail system as they please. The trails also feature parking, restrooms, water fountains, camping, swimming areas, maps, signs and numerous rest areas with cedar benches. Many of these stopping points feature signs with information about the area’s history, geology and animals. One of the most beautiful of such spots is the rest area atop Johnson Peak where one can get a 360-degree view of the surrounding lake and hills, as well as geological features such as the landmark Hell’s Gate. Bird watchers and other wildlife lovers will also find plenty to experience on the trails as well, including a possible

Trail Locations • A 16-mile hike and bike trail is located off LaVilla Road, Park Road 36 and Burma Road (east side lake area). This trail offers several trailheads with restrooms and public parking. The trail also provides access to the top of a 90' high peak that has an outstanding view of the lake. The trail winds through wooded areas, limestone canyons and the trails peak more than 350 feet above the lake. The trail system was designed to allow the habitat to remain untouched outside of the marked trail, so visitors will enjoy wilderness as it is native to the PK area. • The Possum Kingdom Trail is a nature trail through a North Texas cedar and oak forest. The trail has a natural surface with a vertical rise of more than 200 feet and requires physical stamina to complete. • One-quarter mile nature trail at Westside Park (west side PK lake area). • One-mile hiking trail along the Brazos River (below the dam). • These hike and bike trails are free to the public and are available year-around (weather permitting).
glimpse of the elusive golden-cheeked warbler, the only migratory bird that nests solely in Texas. Possum Kingdom is on the northern end of the endangered bird’s habitat. In 2012, the Texas Trails Network honored the Lake Country system with the Great Texas Trail Head Award, which recognizes innovative trail planning and design. The trails have also been featured in statewide publications. Over the last few years competitive runners have discovered the trails and a number of events have been held along their winding routes. In September, the trails were an essential
part of the Trifecta Triathlon’s fourth competition at Possum Kingdom Lake. Also, this past April Endurance Buzz Adventure again hosted the Possum Kingdom Trail Run 52-mile run on the trails. The trail system was made possible by the BRA through grants from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The BRA’s trails and public areas at Possum Kingdom are open yearround. However, should the trails close due to inclement weather, the information will be posted online at brazos.org, where a map of the trail system can be found. For more information, call the BRA at 888922-6272.

The county jail, built in 1882, became a relic of history in 1941 when the new courthouse, which contained a thirdfloor jail, was completed on the Palo Pinto square. It remained in service un-
til the late 20th century when the current sheriff's office and jail was built and jail was built and now serves as the cornerstone of the ground of the museum complex, which also includes a dog trot cabin built in the early 1900s and another, built around 1897, from the Joe Johnson Ranch, the rebuilt Black Springs Fort and more. From Page 34 dates back to the 19th century as a means to honor the first settlers in the area when it was still a part of the frontier. The day features not only speakers, but music, tours of the museum grounds, living history demonstrations, including doll making, sewing, quilting, spinning, whittling and more, and most recently an antique car show that draws dozens of restorations. At Christmas, the association holds its Frontier Christmas, with hay rides, treats, music, storytelling and decorations as they were in the 1800s. The Frontier Christmas is held the second Thursday in December, and this will be its 11th year. In the last few years, the complex has hosted historical exhibits produced by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. These programs feature insights to both Texas and U.S. history and the people who left their mark. Additionally,
research material is available at the museum. Just a block away, historic buildings line the square around the courthouse and the county has taken steps to maintain the integrity of the county seat's architecture. Within the courthouse are records that go back to the very beginning of the county, one of the few counties in Texas that still retains the original documents, from the first grand jury and commissioners court meeting to the present day. Palo Pinto, once named Golconda, is a place where one can almost feel the presence of early pioneers, including such notables as Charlie Goodnight, Oliver Loving, C.C. Slaughter and so many more. The Old Jail Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday-Saturday beginning the first Thursday in March and continuing through about the second Saturday in December. Tours are free and may be scheduled by calling 940-325-0789.

LEAVE THAT WILDLIFE ALONE! E
very year, particularly during the spring and summer, hundreds of young wild animals are unnecessarily picked up by the general public and referred to game wardens or wildlife rehabilitators for treatment and rearing. The most commonly referred animals are baby birds (like the baby owl at left, rescued from drowning) and deer fawns. While most of these animals are picked up by well-meaning persons, it is important to realize that many such human-animal encounters are unnecessary and can even be detrimental to the wildlife concerned. A recent study conducted by Texas rehabilitator Ann Connell found that, in some years, 40 percent or more of the

deer fawns referred to her were not orphans or injured, but “kidnapped” from their mothers. Typically these incidents were well-meaning but misguided attempts to “save” seemingly abandoned fawns. Anecdotal data suggest that the situation for baby birds is similar or worse. These data indicate that such unnecessary referrals to rehabilitators are not only detrimental to the wildlife, but also disruptive and costly to wildlife rehabilitators during the time of year when they most need to concentrate limited resources on truly orphaned or injured wildlife. Remember, a young animal’s best chance for survival is with its natural parents who, better than anyone else, can ensure that it retains all of its natural faculties and behaviors for survival in the wild. General considerations Because of the danger of disease transmission, any suspected orphan should be kept away from domestic
pets. In addition, there is considerable risk to anyone handling a wild animal. Also, because young animals can inappropriately identify pets or people as their parents, they may lose their natural fear and become more vulnerable to predation or injury as they mature. These animals are referred to as ‘human imprints,” a condition which is often irreversible, and may doom the animal to life in captivity or euthanasia. Any time you have an orphaned or injured wild animal, you must remember that the animal may be in pain or in shock. One sign of shock involves unusually docile behavior in what is otherwise a wild animal. Handlers should beware, as the animal may be temporarily stunned, especially if it was found on or near a road. All adult and most juvenile wild animals will attempt to defend themselves from perceived danger by whatever means are available to them. Birds of prey may
bite or use their talons to “foot” a handler; herons and bitterns may thrust their beaks at the eyes of their would-be human saviors; and all mammals can scratch and bite. This is merely an effort to keep themselves from being killed and eaten. It is also important to remember that unusually tame animals may be very sick. Never take chances when dealing with wild animals. If you find yourself temporarily caring for a wild animal in need of help, the best thing you can do for that animal is to keep it “warm, dark and quiet.” You should not attempt to give it food or water unless directed to do so by someone qualified to determine the animal’s condition. Young animals and birds can get fluid in their lungs and drown if you don’t know the proper techniques for giving them water. Never give cows’ milk, as it will make most wild orphans sick and dehydrated. Likewise, birds of prey will sicken and die if fed a diet of hamburger

or hot dogs. Baby songbirds, grackles, jays and crows need a protein diet and cannot digest bread. The best thing you can do for a stranded wild creature is to leave it in peace until you can get the advice of a wildlife rehabilitator. Veterinarians may also be able to give you assistance, although treating wildlife is not the same as treating domestic animals, so if your vet hasn’t had experience or training dealing with wildlife, he or she may not be sure how to treat the animal you have found. Wildlife rehabilitators are trained and experienced professionals, well-versed in the specific nutritional, behavioral, and environmental requirements of particular wildlife species. If an animal can not be returned to its parent, its next best chance for a successful return to the wild can be provided only by such highly skilled persons. — Article by Steve Schwelling, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department
