T
he Hill Country Arts Foundation is almost sixty years old. While we take pride in our history, we also know that history alone does not sustain an organization. A great arts community requires new and meaningful growth if it is to have a successful future. While our Board, Staff, Artists, and Volunteers are quick to talk about the amazing plays, exhibits, and events from our past, we are equally excited to talk about tomorrow and what our future will bring. There are so many new things to see and do here at the Hill Country Arts Foundation. You are holding one of our newest endeavours. The Point Folio is a dream long in making and is a necessary tool for us to introduce the many new activities taking place on our campus. It will allow us to let you know more about today’s HCAF and all it has to offer to our local community and traveling guests. Within these pages you will find out more about all of our projects.

The Hill Country Arts Foundation is a vibrant center of art and learning located on a lovely riverside campus known as The Point.
The Point has been bringing art and theatre to the Texas Hill Country since 1959. Today, it boasts activities and attractions for artists, students, and tourists from all over the world including:
The Smith - Ritch Point Theatre
The oldest continuously running outdoor theatre in Texas. This iconic stage has been presenting theatre under the stars every summer since 1959.
The Duncan - McAshan Visual Arts Center.
Two galleries, three studios, a Sculpture Garden, a full printing press studio, and the only publicly accessible ceramics lab in five counties.
The Huth - Coates Indoor Theatre
Once a historic skating rink, this space now functions as the inside stage with holiday shows, intimate plays, and hilarious comedies.
The Hill Country Atelier
This artistic workshop invites advanced students to study with master artist, Holly White-Gehrt.

2018 represents the 59th year of uninterrupted quality theatre on the banks of the Guadalupe River. Our 2018 season started out with the romantic comedy, Same Time, Next Year in February. March featured Love Letters, the story of two people and their decades-long friendship and, sometimes, romance Following up last summer’s smash hit Doublewide, Texas – A Doublewide, Texas Christmas. A comedy about the smallest trailer park in Texas. May 4-19.

C.S. Lewis’s children’s classic,The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe runs June 8-23, and tells the story of children who journey through the wardrobe to the land of Narnia.

VISUAL
CENTER AND ART GALLERY
The Visual Arts Center at HCAF has helped adults and children explore their creativity and make art since 1959.
Since then, the Art Center has become a bastion for the visual arts in the Kerrville community as well as the greater Hill Country.
The center is home to the DuncanMcAshan Visual Arts Gallery, a 1,900 square foot space hosting exhibits on a range of media throughout the year. The shows feature local as well as nationally recognized artists and admission is always free. Within the main gallery is the Creek Side Gallery with wonderful view, a beautifully lit space for smaller art exhibits. 8 | 2018 | THE POINT FOLIO
Whether you are interested in learning to make art, practicing your craft, taking a retreat, or enjoy looking at artwork, the Visual Arts Center at HCAF has something for everyone.

eel free to take a tour around our fabulous sculpture garden. If you see a fourteen-foot tall Kinetic Art Gallery sign, you found it. The installation is one of two kinetic sculptures by artist Jim Lapaso. The sculpture garden is a green and inviting place that has seen countless parties, gatherings, and picnics. The center is unique in that it offers a fully equipped ceramics studio as well as a printmaking lab with three presses.

Exploring creativity since 1959

hildren benefit from our Art Day Field Trips where we bring children onto the grounds for art studies for a day of fun. In the summers, we hold our Youth Artists Camp that offer a curriculum of creative, process-based, art education for children four years old and up. Campers are taught to work across various forms of media and the importance of art across cultures. At the end of every week, we hold an exciting and impressive gallery exhibit of the young artists’ work

Our Visual Arts Center offers studio/gallery
The Visual Art Center
holds three large multi-use studios. With their hardwood floors and mirrored walls, they are perfect for artists’ use and art instruction. Are you part of a group of painters? Consider using these studios for a retreat. HCAF hosts retreat groups from all across the United States that come to the Hill Country for isolation and a quiet place to study and paint.

A new Atelier movement
is sweeping America and Europe. The rapid growth of this approach is a testament to a void in contemporary art education. Artists of all ages and levels are hungry for the nearly lost lessons hidden in history’s greatest works of art. Fine arts and education come together in this exclusive and in-depth workshop that is unique to the area. The Hill Country Atelier and artist-in-residence Holly White-Gehrt brings new energy to the visual arts program at HCAF.

developed and taught the inaugural Part Time Program at Georgetown Atelier. She was in the first graduating class of Georgetown Atelier, where she studied with Tenaya Sims, and a graduate of Gage Academy’s Aristides Atelier, where she studied with Juliette Aristides. She also holds a BFA from Pacific Northwest College of Art, where she graduated with the Governor’s Award for Thesis Work. She began her art studies at the Aegean Center for the Fine Arts in Paros, Greece. Holly continued to broaden her range of practice, including two years of Zen Brushwork with a master in Japan, and is currently studying egg tempera with Koo Schadler and others. 14 | 2018 | THE POINT FOLIO

Stonehenge II has been visited by thousands
of tourists since creation in Hunt, Texas over 20 years ago. Today, the Druid replica sits at the entrance to The Point. Tour bus loads as well as single out-of-towners have sought out this sculpture over the years making it a worldwide attraction. Come see for yourself why others are drawn to this unique work of art. Stonehenge II’s
reputation and fan base have grown tremendously. Search the internet or find us on Facebook, and you’ll learn that as many as 500 pilgrims a week come to see the monuments in person. Bring your family, have a picnic, and take lots of photos. A wedding in the stone circle is certainly memorable.
STONEHENGE II Stonehenge II was erected as an amusing art project by the late Al Shepperd and his friend and neighbor Doug Hill. Hill had offered a limestone slab to Shepperd in 1989, unused in his recently completed back patio. Shepperd stood the rock up monolith-style, then odd thoughts started to seep into his head. He was gripped by what we’ve observed as a rare but not unknown malady – “Stonehenge Fever. — RoadsideAmerica.com Now, Stonehenge II along with two Easter Island Heads calls the campus of the Hill Country Arts Foundation its new home. It shares this 13.5 acre property with The Point Theatre and the Duncan-McAshan Visual Arts Center which have been bringing high quality local and national art and entertainment to the Texas Hill Country community for almost sixty years. Stonehenge II has introduced thousands of tourists to the local treasure. Come by and visit West Kerr County Visitor’s Center and browse our gift shop, filled with Stonehenge II memorabilia and souvenirs.

for young audiences, Spare Oom is the brain child of HCAF’s Schreiner University student, Kayla Castaneda. Parents, children, and families can come see Point Theatre actors presenting fairy tale and fantasy stories with positive messages.

Dinner and a Show! Encore Restaurant & Patio
is a recent addition to HCAF, with its casual atmosphere, amazing view of the Guadalupe and delicious food have made Encore a huge success. Within a month of its opening, Encore partnered with The Point for a program called “Dinner and a Show� where theatre patrons come early, enjoy a meal, and see a Point performance. The program was an obvious fit and has been very popular and successful thanks to Chef Marcus Willis and friendly staff. Like Stonehenge II, the Tourist Center, and the new Gift Shop, Encore adds another element to the HCAF campus. Popular and lively, the restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday for lunch and dinner and Sunday Brunch.

The Texas Legislature declared it the
Exhibiting Artists From Across Texas
J
oin us for acres of art, food and fun the last weekend of September at the 42nd annual Texas Arts and Crafts Fair on the grounds of the Hill Country Arts Foundation. After a hiatus of five years, the official state arts festival returns, featuring a wide range of arts and crafts by Texas residents, as well as favorite fair food offerings, entertainment and related educational and recreational activities. New parking lots and stronger Wi-Fi will enhance the fairgoers’ experience. James Avery Artisan Jewelry will be a “Legacy Sponsor” of the 2018 Fair. Company founder Jim Avery was a board member and supporter of both the arts and crafts fair and the Hill Country Arts Foundation. The idea for the arts and crafts fair originated in 1970, when the Texas Tourist Development Agency, inspired by successful arts fairs in West Virginia and Canada, wanted to establish a similar event in Texas. From a number of competing cities, Kerrville was selected as the host site, and the first arts and crafts fair was held over Memorial Day weekend in 1972 on the Schreiner University campus.
