It’s performance season.

End of Year recitals and performances are happening all around us.

It is an exciting time of year to see the students’ progress from one year to the next.

It this edition we are featuring Lydia Oquendo and Rogelio Coralles of St. Lucie Ballet. St. Lucie Ballet will be opening their new location this summer.

Krystina Alexis Nelson has once more contributed to the magazine with her observation on Perfecting Performance. She is a focused and dedicated Dance Coach with several new programs planned for the serious dancers.

Our in-house Doctor, Dr. Kathleen Davenport, is focusing on the Dancers’ Hip, an important part for all dancers’ performance longevity.

The Kate Effect, Kate Corallo, is offering all the good and imaginative ways to prepare and enjoy Avocados, the good fat.

Self Esteem is a topic that comes up in every circle. Natasha Felix elaborates on this topic in this edition.

I had an “Aha” moment, when sitting to work on this issue. I wanted to share how often all of those years of dance training are still lingering in the back of my mind. Ballet Palm Beach Presents Mixed Bill “A Midsummer Night’s Dream & Other Works” at Eissey Campus Theatre with David Ward, Guest Principal Dancer Ballet Palm Beach closes the 2017/2018 season with mixed bill A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Other Works. A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a ballet re-telling of Shakespeare’s comedy, will be presented with diverse works from Ballet Palm Beach’s repertoire. Performances are at the Eissey Campus Theatre at the Palm Beach State College on Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, May 6 at 4pm.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream turns the beloved Shakespeare’s comedy of love triangles and magic into a one act ballet, perfect for families of all ages. Mendelssohn’s music beckons audiences to the Athenian woodland where fairy capers pose hilarious results for unsuspecting mortals. McKeely Borger plays the mischievous Puck. The bickering fairy royals, Queen Titania and King Oberon and will be danced by Lily Ojea Loveland and guest principal dancer, David Ward. Hailing from England, David Ward trained with the English National Ballet School and went on to be a soloist at the Northern Ballet in Leeds, UK and most recently BalletMet. Academy will also be featured alongside the professional company dancers. “The academy students are excited to go through the rehearsal and performance process with us,” says Ballet Palm Beach dancer, Lily Ojea Loveland. “It is important for stu-

Opening the mixed bill is Balanchine’s charming Who Cares? presented in its concert version. Set to music by George Gershwin, the ballet evokes the exuberance of New York City with romantic pas de deux, syncopated group numbers, and virtuosic solos.

In addition, Ballet Palm Beach presents works from their eclectic repertoire.

Saint-Saëns Suite, a neoclassical work choreographed by Artistic Director Colleen Smith, aims to embody Saint-Saëns’ sparkling music while showcasing the versatility and strength of the company dancers.

Space Between Words, set to music by minimalist composer Arvo Pärt, is an intricate, contemporary-styled piece by local choreographer, Donna Murray.

Local Businessman Joins Board of Sarasota Contemporary Dance Sarasota Contemporary Dance (SCD) has named Norbert Donelly, a prominent local businessman, to its Board of Directors.

Donelly has strong roots in the local business economy as Chair of Tervis®, a family owned local manufacturing company that he joined in 1988. Equally important for Sarasota, Donelly has for many years devoted himself to the Sarasota community-- both in the arts and other not for profit organizations. He particularly enjoys being involved in the early stages of a nonprofit.

“We are grateful for Norbert’s interest in our dance company,” said Leymis Bolaños Wilmott, SCD Artistic Director, “and so very fortunate that he has chosen to join our board. We know that we will be able to rely on his expertise and experience in supporting our thriving dance company.”

Among the many organizations he has supported, Donelly was a former board member of the Gulf Coast Community Foundation,

where he chaired several committees. He has been a board member and/ or supporter of many other nonprofits including: the Sarasota Ballet, the West Coast Black Theatre Troupe, VMA Academy, Embracing Our Differences, Unidos Now, as well as the Booker High School Film Academy and Stem program. He has also established several scholarships. Recently he has been involved in the Miss Susie’s restaurant project, Urbanite, and the SCF engineering school.

He is also a board member of the Nantucket Atheneum, where he was instrumental in funding the ESL program.

Prior to joining Tervis®, Donelly worked for several firms in banking finance and real estate based in NYC. He graduated from Brown University with a degree in Economics. He enjoys hiking and adventure travel. Donelly and his wife Ann have been married for over 40 years and they have two children and three grandchildren.

Maltz Jupiter Theatre announces Smash Hit Musical - MAMMA MIA!

The Maltz Jupiter Theatre has announced that the big and splashy Broadway hit Mamma Mia! is the long-awaited surprise show of its 2018/19 season!

Based on the songs of ABBA with music and lyrics by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson and a book by Catherine Johnson, Mamma Mia! tells the story of Sophie, a young woman desperate to find her biological father as her wedding day approaches. After reading her mother’s diary from a wild summer 20 years ago, Sophie learns that her dad could be one of three men. She invites the men to her wedding without telling her mother, who is unprepared by the surprise reunion with her three ex-lovers. What ensues is one unforgettable trip down the aisle!

“Although Mamma Mia! utilizes popular songs, having this production in our intimate theatre under the direction of Carbonell Award-winning director Mark Martino will bring us closer to the story of a young woman in search of family,” said Andrew Kato, the Theatre’s producing artistic director and chief executive. “The beloved musical is just one of a vibrant selection of plays and musicals that everyone will be talking about.”

The 2018/19 season will begin with Steel Magnolias (October 28 – November 11), a beloved American comedy/drama that examines the complexities of six women’s lives as they navigate love, loss and the fierceness of friendship. We continue with Disney Beauty and the Beast (November 27 – December 16), the spectacular and timeless Broadway blockbuster that tells the story of a tenacious beauty who meets a prince-turned-beast. Next up is Mamma Mia! (January 15 – February 10), the Tony Award®-nominated smash hit musical that will have you dancing in your seat to ABBA’s greatest hits. Then join us for the South Florida regional premiere of A Doll’s House, Part 2, an uproariously funny comedy fresh from its Broadway run that imagines Nora’s untold story after leaving her marriage in Henrik Ibsen’s famed play. Our incredible season ends with West Side Story, the Tony Award®-winning sizzling dance musical about two star-crossed lovers caught between warring street gangs.

Straz Center presents Next Generation Ballet in Cinderella The award-winning dancers of Next Generation Ballet (NGB) will join Patel Conservatory ballet dancers to perform the timeless classic ballet Cinderella, on May 5-6 in the Straz Center for the Performing Art’s Ferguson Hall.

Under the direction of NGB Artistic Director and Patel Conservatory Dance Chair Philip Neal, jubilant music by Sergei Prokofiev sweeps this magical ballet along at a brisk, joyous pace, as the renowned Cinderella characters demonstrate the beloved tale through expressive dance. Audiences will delight in Cinderella’s race-to-midnight, as her fate hangs in the balance by one very powerful glass slipper.

Cinderella was composed in the 1940s, with the premiere being in 1945 at the Bolshoi Theatre. The NGB version was choreographed by former NGB Artistic Director Peter Stark, who focused on the students’ unique talents and on bringing the story into focus. The large-scale revival of this production includes nearly all of the Patel Conservatory ballet students and the 43 NGB trainees.

Beautiful sets and costumes complete this magical production.

Cinderella will be presented in Ferguson Hall May 5-6. THE MALTZ JUPITER THEATRE’S CONSERVATORY RECIPIENTS OF ANNUAL AWARDS The Maltz Jupiter Theatre Goldner Conservatory of Performing Arts has announced the recipients of its annual Conservatory Awards.

Named for donors who have made the physical construction of the Conservatory possible, the ten awards are merit-based acknowledgements of hard work, positive attitudes and willingness to go the extra mile.

“We have many hardworking students at our Conservatory, but these students, in particular, have shown perseverance and determination throughout the year,” said Julie Rowe, the Theatre’s director of education. “We are so grateful to the donors and parents that help make the Conservatory such a wonderful place for our students to continue to flourish and cultivate their talents.”

The winners were honored at a public fundraiser luncheon on Saturday, April 7, at Jupiter Beach Resort and Spa. The included performances from the Theatre’s Youth Touring Company, Professional Training Program and a special preview song from the upcoming musical 42nd Street, which will be performed May 18 and 19 at the Theatre and features many of the award recipients.

PARIS BALLET DANCE STUDENT GOES TO NEW YORK FOR MAJOR INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION Jupiter, Florida USA- Thirteen year old Jupiter, Florida resident and Paris Ballet student Devon Luxton won First Place at the Junior Men’s Semi-Finals at Youth America Grand Prix in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday, March 3, 2018. This incredible win allows him the opportunity to compete at the Finals in New York in April, 2018. Semi-Final Regional Competitions are held in 25 U.S cities and eight international locations. With over 10,000 dance students participating, only about ten percent make it to the Finals.

Just being invited to New York to compete is an honor while saying he is one the best of the best.

Youth America Grand Prix is considered the Olympics of the dance world. It is adjudicated by the top names in international dance. The competition is attended by scouts representing major dance companies from all over the world including Paris Opera Ballet, American Ballet Theatre, New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, The Royal Ballet, Stuttgart Ballet, Dutch National Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and Washington Ballet, among many others. Youth America Grand Prix Alumni are now dancing with 80 companies around the world. Finals can be easily the next step for a dancer into the professional field.

Amazingly, Devon has only been dancing for eighteen months.

His first formal class was on the morning of his twelfth birthday.

He comes from a long line of well-respected and renowned family members in the international arts world. Having a high ability for graphic arts and photography, Devon had never showed an interest in dance. However, after attending a performance of “Billy Elliot” when he was eleven, he became inspired. Right after the show he announced to his mother (a former professional dancer herself ), he wanted to be a ballet dancer.

Research brought them to Paris Ballet and Dance in Jupiter, Florida. They learned the school’s Founder and Director Jean-Hugues Feray was trained at the Paris Opera Ballet, and Paris National Conservatory. He has had a long-time reputation performing principal roles in international ballet companies while as a professional dancer. As a Master Teacher, Mr. Feray has seen his students accept positions in professional companies, and accepted into top-rated

summer intensives and university dance programs across the country.

Unassuming, polite, with an incredible sense of humor and well-liked by everyone he encounters, Devon is extremely versatile, focused and driven. Being very committed to his art, his mother says, “he eats, sleeps and dreams dance.” As a dancer/ athlete, he attends hours and hours of required weekly classical ballet classes along with other classes including, partnering, neo-classical, modern contemporary, and variations. Part of his weekly regime is dedicated men’s classes with several other young men his age and older offered at his school. Private classes and coaching sessions, expands his training.

In 2017 and 2018, he attended the Ballet Magnifique Ballet Intensives hosted by Paris Ballet in collaboration with the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. The faculty included world renowned French ballet stars and master teachers. After the Ballet Magnifique Ballet Winter Intensive in 2018 this past January, he was personally invited by the Legendary Charles Jude to attend the prestigious Stage International De Danse d’Arcachon Intensive in Arcachon in the south of France this summer. Now, just after his Youth America Grand Prix Semi-Final win on March 3, he has also been offered full-scholarships to attend the schools of Ballet West, Colorado Ballet, and Kansas City Ballet.

Director Feray says, “He’s like a sponge. He accepts corrections very well and applies them immediately. He is easy to work with and an absolute pleasure to have in class. Watching him grow into an exceptional dancer has been an incredible experience. He definitely has what it takes!”

On March 27, donors and subscribers to Sarasota Contemporary Dance were invited to a “welcome home” gathering at the Company’s new home studio at 1400 Boulevard of the Arts, Suite 300 in the Historic Rosemary District.

Following a reception and tours of the space, guests assembled in the spacious dance studio to hear remarks by Artistic Director Leymis Bolaños Wilmott, view a segment of a dance duet by choreographer Kristin O’ Neal, performed by Melissa Coleman Sperber and Charlotte Johnson, and get a sneak peak of the company’s 2018-19 season, “Rooted.”

Encouraged by board members Jamie Coffey and Michael Marraccini several donors, including board chair Shane Chalke and his wife Monique, stepped forward to raise over $50,000 for the Studio Fund and performance sponsorship. The celebration continued through sunset on the third floor terrace overlooking the Rosemary District, the heart of Sarasota’s thriving arts community, with guitar music by Sean Walsh.

The event was catered by the Rosemary District’s Lolita Tartine with drawing gifts provided by neighborhood businesses Five Petals Holistic Health and Empire Dance Studios.

Event coordinators were board member Jamie Coffey and advisory board member Linda Joffe.

Don’t practice until you get it RIGHT; Practice until you cannot get it WRONG…. these words are so true. You want to be able to do what you do effortlessly, to think less about execution and more about how the message you convey through movement is received by your audience. Here are some essential tips for how to redirect your mindset when it feels like all you are caught up doing is rehearsing, practicing steps, and stressing about being on stage: •

STOP! Listen to the music, and be still. Shut your eyes, lay on the floor, sit in silence in a quiet place… do what feels necessary to clear your mind from noise and thoughts that distract you from the sound of the music, or the lyrics (if applicable).

Really tune into the layers and depths of the music, the highs and lows, and accents and the tempo. What is it telling you?

How does it make you feel? What thoughts or experiences come to mind when you listen to this piece of music? Use this exercise to develop a relationship with the sound you are carrying through your movement and expression on stage with the choreography.

Don’t be afraid to challenge the meaning or explain your interpretation of the dance or choreography! This is what will help you acquaint yourself with the dance and make it yours. It if your performance and you have to transmit a message through what you do, and speak a language that makes sense to others. It matters when it comes to understanding what the choreographer’s mission is with what they have created on your body with this music and you will learn more about yourself as a dancer through seeking more information from your teacher/choreographer.

No, the answer here is not because it “helps you express yourself,” or because “its your passion…” Think of your real truth in this idea, not what everyone else says….and if you do say these things, dig deeper to uncover your true reason for dancing. What are the results you seek on the worst days in class? What feelings do you have about dance when you have a bad day? When you are thinking about dance and how it is a part of your life, remember the importance of it and the unique relationship you have with dance, and renew your love for dance through every time you step out on stage. Be grateful, be humble, be proud of what you are, dancer, because what you do for an audience is more than entertain.

Doctors Advice ///The Dancers Hip

The Danc It is no surprise that dancer commonly complain of hip pain since many types of dance technique require dancers to place their hips at the far end ranges of movement. It can be easy to overuse the hip joint and increase the risk for injury. There are many components to hip range of motion and it can been challenging to know how to best use this important joint. When I think about the hip joint, I think about it in different layers.

The inner layer of the hip joint is the bone. The bone needs to be healthy to support the rest of the hip joint. Proper nutrition, avoiding over-training, and gradually ramping up dance activity can help protect the hip bones. The bones can also be injured in the growing dancer when there is a pull on them from other parts of the hips, like the tendons. You can get a broken bone when a strong muscle pulls off a piece of the bone. This is called an avulsion fracture. This usually happens during an extension movement (like a kick or a jump), especially when you haven’t warmed up properly. Most of the time, this injury heals very well without needing surgery, but it takes correct diagnosis, time modifying dance activity, and physical therapy to gradually get back to full dancing.

Another layer that can be injured is the cartilage and the labrum.

The cartilage is the part of the hip that is right on top and around the hip bone. When you hear of people getting arthritis, this is an injury of the cartilage. Most young dancers do not get cartilage injuries, but we try to make sure the hip is being used correctly when we are young to try our best to prevent or delay cartilage injuries, like arthritis, as we age. The labrum is a part of the hip that helps keep the joint in place. It is softer than the bone and can get torn. Just because a labrum is torn does not mean it needs surgery.

Many dancers have labral tears that do not need surgery. Working on proper biomechanics, hip strengthening exercises, and using the hip appropriately in class can keep the dancer dancing.

The muscles and tendons make up the active layers of the hip.

These are the part of hip that actually make the movement happen.

The muscles and tendons can get injured in dancing. It is important to stretch and strengthen these muscles appropriately to protect the hip joint as much as possible. There are both big and small muscles

cers’ Hip around the hip and sometimes the big muscles get overused and the small muscles get underused becoming weak. Focusing on decreasing use of the larger muscles and increasing using the smaller muscles can help both technique and injuries. Here are hip exercises that I have recommended for some of my dancers: Hip flexor stretch: Hip flexion is the movement of kicking your leg to the front, which is a common move in most dance techniques. This means that our hip flexors can get tight. To stretch, many dancers kneel but then drop onto their elbows. This stretches some of the hip flexors muscles, but misses some as well. I recommend kneeling on something soft to protect your knee so both your knees are at 90 degrees when you are kneeling. Keeping your pelvis in alignment and gently push forward. Do not let your pelvis fall backward (keep tucked rather than sticking your seat out behind you). You should feel the stretch in the front of your thigh.

Hip Abductor strengthening: Hip abduction is the movement where we lift our leg to the side. While this is another common movement in dance, the hip abductor muscles actually work better in low extension and in parallel, not turned out. So they get underused in classical dance technique because we tend to turn out and bring our extension high. These muscles are our major stabilizer muscles and when they are strong, it can help the hip joint, but it also helps feeling more stable on your standing leg for turns and balances. I recommend lying on your side and stabilizing with your hand in front. Bring your top leg slightly behind you so the toe is touching the bottom foot’s heel. Then lift the leg up to the side. It should not go very high and if it is high then you are probably turning out, moving your waist, or have your top leg too far forward.

This one is very hard to get right and it is important only to do it if you are able to control it and feel it in the side of your hip.

While this is not a complete picture of every single structure in the hip and how to strengthen and stretch, I hope that this article helps take a new look at the many different layers of this complex joint. Not all injuries are preventable. However, knowing about the hip joint and learning some basic exercises can help optimize your dance technique and keep your hips working better for longer.

St. Lucie Ballet opened in July of 2004 in a small plaza on Bayshore Boulevard in Port St. Lucie. The 800-square foot space was adequate to begin what was the dream of co-owner and director Lydia Oquendo. Lydia and her husband Rogelio Corrales had just moved from Duluth, Minnesota where they both worked at Minnesota Ballet. Mrs. Oquendo was a teacher, choreographer, and Outreach Coordinator and Mr. Corrales a principal dancer for seven years, still had many years of dancing ahead. He found work at Ballet Florida where he was a dancer for 5 years and Ballet Palm Beach for another 6 years whilst teaching in the evenings at his own St. Lucie Ballet. During these years Lydia and Rogelio laid the foundation that would be a school of high quality classical ballet training.

full-length Ballet and then performed at Sunrise Theatre in downtown Fort Pierce. As of spring 2018 St. Lucie Ballet has had 13 seasons of Nutcracker performances now in two locations.

Since 2007, St. Lucie Ballet had many good years in its current space of 3 rooms, small lobby, small office and loft for costumes.

During this time the school built a reputation of quality training, knowledgeable ballet education, spectacular performances utilizing both The Sunrise Theatre and the Lyric Theatre. In addition, two wonderful programs have come into fruition, a competitor’s company program and a summer intensive program.

In 2013, school directors created an elite company of competitors who perform extremely well earning awards and scholarships from many high-level ballet and dance competitions such as Youth America Grand Prix, Youth America Grand Prix NYC Finals, American Dance Competition, Universal Ballet Competition, New York City Dance Alliance, Shake the Ground and others. This incredible experience gives the dancers a feel for real life moments of what being a professional dancer is all about.

The beginning was very promising; new students walked in every month. Then in 2004 Port St. Lucie was struck by two hurricanes and then another in 2005. During this crisis, everything stopped: business, schools, everything was put on hold. Tougher times where still to come during the housing market collapse from 2007 through 2009. The ballet school survived these incredibly trying years with some of the most dedicated students and families a teacher and small business owner could ask for.

Starting 2016, St. Lucie Ballet began bringing in professional guest male dancers to practice and perform Pas de Deux (partnering) with the advanced level ballet students during its Summer Intensive Program providing yet another level of pre-professional training which give the students an edge in the very difficult and competitive world of professional dance.

In 2005 the studio moved to an industrial neighborhood on Biltmore Street into a warehouse space a little larger than before.

The previous location had some hurricane damage so it was important to move immediately. The studio was no longer on a main boulevard therefore it was essential to begin the work of establishing the school in the community. So, work began on a staple of many Ballet based dance studios, “The Nutcracker “. The first couple of years the performance was a suite of The Nutcracker at a local high school and only Act II was performed. Every year after that the school could add new scenes and eventually began performing the

strations. The studio will now be able to expand the choice and levels of classes whether it be the recreational student to pre-professional ballet level. Some of the classes St. Lucie Ballet will be offering are, Creative Movement (ages 2 & up), Pre Ballet (ages 3 & up), Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, Pointe, Acro, Hip Hop, Musical Theatre, Broadway Jazz for Musical Theatre students and more.

With classical ballet at its foundation St. Lucie Ballet students are sure to be a success whether they are wishing to be a professional dancer, to continue their studies in dance or other in a university setting, to seek positions on Broadway or any other career choice. Discipline, great organization, and hard work are the key. We are looking forward to many big announcements after our Grand Opening in June.

AVO-BANANA BREAD

1 can chickpeas (rinsed and drained) 2 avocados 3 T EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) 1/4 lime juice, or lemon if preferred 2 cloves garlic 1 T Tahini 1/2 tsp salt Combine. Blend. Enjoy with fresh veggies!

1 cup coconut sugar 2 small avocados = 1/2 cup mashed avocados 2 really ripe bananas 2 flax eggs * 6 T almond milk 1 tsp vinegar 1 tsp baking soda 2 cups gluten-free flour 1/2 cup vegan dark chocolate chips

AVOCADO PASTA

+ Preheat oven to 375 degrees + Spray loaf pan with avocado oil spray *Make flax eggs by adding 2T flax seeds w 2T water and set aside or warm over medium-low heat. Flax seeds will have a gooey consistency similar to a raw egg yolk. Strain the mixture saving all of the gooey liquid to use in recipe to replace 2 eggs. + Place avocados in food processor pulsing until smooth. + Place into a large mixing bowl + Add coconut sugar and mix with a hand held mixer until all is blended. + Add 1/2 cup of flour at a time mixing together, adding almond milk with the remaining 1/2 cup of flour. Don’t over mix or bread will be less fluffy. + Pour liquified mixture into the lightly oiled bread pan and sprinkle the top with the dark chocolate chips. + Bake about 35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean or with crumbs. Top of loaf will be browned. + Cool at least 10 minutes. + Slice and enjoy!

Use brown rice pasta, follow package instructions.

In a food processor or blender combine: 1 avocado Juice of 1 lemon (reserve zest) 1-2 cloves garlic 1 handful basil 2 green onions 1/4 teaspoon salt and pepper (more or less to taste) Add creamy avocado sauce to cooked pasta and mix thoroughly.

Garnish with lemon zest and basil and enjoy a dinner for 2.

Originally inspired by graduation celebrations and debutante balls, prom today is now an extravagant, defining moment in a teen’s life, bearing little resemblance to promenades of the past -- especially when it comes to cost.

All of this indulgence unfortunately comes with a price tag, and prom expenses can put a large dent in your wallet. Teens are spending nearly $640 on prom hair and makeup, outfits, tickets and rides, according to Yahoo Style’s “2017 Prom Across America” survey -- and that doesn’t take into consideration any pre-prom expenses, such as the promposal, which, according to Visa’s annual prom spending survey, adds another $324!

The Promposal In recent years, teens have upped the ante, finding elaborate -- and often public -- ways to ask someone to prom.

What are some popular promposal tactics? Spelling “prom” with pastries, creating giant duct tape posters, decorating lockers and bedrooms, and popping the question on the jumbotron at a sporting event.

Fashion First When proms first became common, teens were encouraged to wear their “Sunday best” -- implying a nice dress or suit they already owned. Not so anymore. For girls, prom is all about the dress, and finding the perfect one at the right price is no easy task. “Seventeen Magazine” reported that girls spend $231 on average for a dress, $45 on shoes, $23 on a handbag, $32 on jewelry and $118 on hair, nails and makeup.

While guys typically spend less on prom clothing and accessories, they’re still shelling out for a tuxedo, corsage and other accessories.

Cut Costs, Save for College The steep prom price tag is leading teens to look at alternatives, such as ditching typical outfits and making their own. One example is Duck Tape formal wear. Over the last 17 years, the Duck brand Stuck at Prom Scholarship Contest has attracted more than 7,000 entrants and awarded more than half a million dollars in scholarships to teens who crafted their Duck Tape prom attire.

I

look back at my life and realized that every step and every decision I make is based on the skills I learned in “Dance”.

Learning to dance at such a young age prevented me from comparing myself to others who did not grow up in a dance studio.

As children, we follow directions blindly because it’s what the adults in our lives are telling us. We are young and impressionable and we want to be the best possible in the various situations we encounter as we are growing up.

These last few years, I had reached a point, where I felt totally burned out. I couldn’t get my “mojo” on as they say. I didn’t know why either, which is the worse part. I looked back at my life and remembered a previous time when I was able to juggle many different things at the same time.

When my two children were very young, I found myself as a single parent on an island as an expatriate. I had to be adaptable to reinvent myself in the best possible way to be able to give my children their necessities: a roof, food, clothing and education.

Being adaptable is what allowed me to see what was missing on the island and to create it for the benefit of, not just me, but also the community. There was a need for dance classes. So I started teaching dance as an after school program at the elementary school, using one of their regular classrooms.

Soon word was out about these classes and parents from other schools started to bring their children to take classes.

It outgrew the space fairly quickly and I needed to find something bigger. I recognized the need and desire for quality organized dance classes, which is how I started my dance studio in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

I contacted a gym owner in a convenient location in the middle of the island, and never advertised the classes. Word of mouth spread so fast, that the classes were filled instantly. When that gym was no longer available, I moved to an even bigger gym that had just opened in a newly built shopping center. And the classes grew even more.

Before long, I was outfitting my own dance studio with all the proper flooring, barre, mirrors, waiting area, music,

Adaptability/// WHAT DANCE TAUGHT ME dance studio software and all the trimmings needed to conduct business. I was teaching Ballet, Jazz and Tap for the children. In the evenings, I taught a workout belly dance class. In addition, I taught modeling and acting classes.

During this time I still had to be available for my children: so I became involved with the PTA, and taught classes at two different elementary schools during the day. I wrote, choreographed and directed the yearly school musicals, with time to volunteer at the Arts Foundation Organization. I was personally still performing at local events during this period.

I had a summer Kids Club for the local kids and a babysitting service for the hotel guests coming on vacation to the island. Every Friday night was movie night at the Kids Club and parents would drop their children off, while they went out on date night with their spouses or a night out with the girls. I was happy to be with the children. Plus $8 dollar a movie, including popcorn, pizza and a drink, was cheaper than a babysitter for the night. Needless to say, movie night was fun for all. Yet, I was also able to find time to meet with friends and have a good time.

The transition to Florida in 2008, changed a lot about the multitasking I was able to do compared to living on an island. Even so, I instantly jumped in to help with the Parent Teacher Organization, not knowing where this would go.

For three years, I became the Vice-President, organizing events and special programs for the school. During that time, I also became a substitute teacher for the Palm Beach School district, and was teaching and subbing at local dance studios.

I soon saw the need for the acknowledgement of the local dance scene. It was an active one, with so much talent and so much potential, I felt that this practically underground activity needed a voice and visibility. That is when I got the inspiration to start a dance magazine to do just that.

That was eight years ago . In that time, I have met so many amazing children, parents, teachers and others involved in the dance community. I feel rewarded for taking that direction in my life.

I’ve reached a point, as we all do after doing something for a long time, to take a step back and ask: “Ok what’s the next move? Where am I going? What else should I be doing?” I believe that’s how I lost my “Mojo”; too many questions.

I wanted to know how it was possible, that I was able to accomplish so much during the earlier years and now, I feel as if I can’t take another step.

Then the realization hit me: What did “Dance” teach you all those years? It taught me to be ready to adapt to any situation. It taught me to stick to it and make it better. It taught me to be diligent and consistent. It taught me to be the best that I can be.

If it were necessary to change the choreography after working at it for some time, then we changed it. If a costume malfunctioned, then an instant decision was made and we moved on. If the music stopped, continue to dance. If you realized you missed the step, improvise. We were always ready to adapt to minor and major changes. Now we are able to take that same lesson and apply it to our daily life.

So, as I write this essay, I am reminded of all the skills we acquired as dancers, sometimes not even realizing it. We are gifted with patience, perseverance, and hard work. To all those dancers before me, now, and to come; I salute and honor you for all that additional work you put into this passion, for the true purpose of the love of dance. Change is the only consistent thing in our lives, so access the situation and then adapt.

Keep dancing even if only in your imagination.

Is Self-Confidence a Personality trait or a Developed Skill?

“However ordinary each of us may seem, we are all in some way special, and can do things that are extraordinary, perhaps until then…even thought impossible.” ~Roger Bannister

This is not a story about running, record breaking or even about the late Roger Bannister, but a perfect example of Self-Confidence.

Up until 1954, athletes in the world of running didn’t believe that running a mile in less than 4 minutes was possible. Several athletes had come close to the 4-minute mark, but none had been able to actually break the record. No one had ever done it before, and the overall belief at the time was that the body just wasn’t capable of achieving that speed. Everyone, except for one person that is; Sir Roger Bannister.

Bannister wasn’t necessarily sure he would be able to break the 4-minute mile record, but he had a vision. He worked towards it, improving his running time little by little. He failed several times in his attempt to break the record, but that didn’t stop his resolve.

During each failed attempt, he would analyze his performance and identify where and how he could improve. The only way he could have learned these crucial lessons was by trying and failing, learning and adjusting, and trying again. He wasn’t seeking perfection every time he ran. He was seeking progress.

Bannister was a 25-year-old British runner who participated in many races, including the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. While he did set a new record in another race category, running a mile in under 4 minutes was still an impossible dream. That didn’t prevent him from trying though. His goal was to be the first to break the record. The closest an athlete had come to that was Gunder Hägg in 1945 at 4 minutes and 1 second. Bannister practiced regularly while attending medical school, and on May 6, 1954 he did it in 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds. He was the very first athlete to break the 4-minute mile barrier, breaking the previous record that was in place for 9 years.

Once he broke the 4-minute mile record, it gave the other athletes the confidence that they too could run a mile in less than 4 minutes, and maybe even break Bannister’s record, if they prepared themselves, if they took action, if they tried. And they did.

Seeking perfection will kill your confidence. We wait to start, we wait to try, we wait to explore until everything is perfect. Because perfection is so elusive, we freeze and don’t get anything done. By not taking action, we don’t get to have the small successes to build up our confidence. Failing in itself doesn’t take away our self-confidence. It’s not learning from our “failures” and mostly not daring to try again that’s the evil-doer. Notice that I place the word failure

While this is already an amazing feat in itself, what’s even more interesting is the fact that less than 2 months later, Banister’s record was broken with a time of 3 minutes and 58 seconds. Since then the record for fastest mile run has come down to 3 minutes, 43 seconds held by Moroccan runner Hicham El Guerrouj in 1999.

Our aim should be for progress, not perfection. If you did better today than you did yesterday, then you’ve shown progress and that is success!

• Small incremental actions that will bring you closer to your goal. It will allow you to see how far you’ve come and will encourage you to take action tomorrow; • The willingness to try, to take risks, to learn from failures and try again. Low confidence comes from inaction. You’re better off trying and failing, than not trying at all; • Preparation. Practice your art; • Being resilient. Being flexible.

Are you born with Self-Confidence or is it a skill you can develop and master? The answer to that is Self-Confidence is a skill.

It’s not part of your DNA, you’re not born with it and it doesn’t magically appear out of nowhere. Reciting “I am confident” to yourself over and over again and hoping it will be there when you wake up in the morning is futile.

You aren’t defined by the errors you make. You, and your life, is a work in progress. Life is never finished. Whenever you try something, regardless if you were successful or not, celebrate yourself for trying. That one try has brought you one step closer to your dream.

If you don’t let that mistake define you, and you try again, then soon enough you will have achieved your goal.

Self Confidence is earned; developed; built. If you want to be self-confident, you need to do the work.

The beauty of self-confidence is not that you’re sure you will achieve your goals every time you go for them. It’s that you recognize what it takes to achieve them. Your strength, wisdom, talent and perseverance is within you!
