Now part of the community, Texas Mattress Makers honors fallen heroes by closing Memorial Day Youval Meicler, founder and owner of Texas Mattress Makers, found a new, welcoming home for his business that reflected his core values when he opened a store in Katy in January. “Katy is a community that is all about family and quality of life, and that is what we are as a business,” said Youval, whose Katy location is at 5026 East Third Street. “Everything we do has the customer in mind from the start to the finish, and that finish doesn’t mean when you buy the mattress. We want to be a part of this community and a part of this community’s values. “We want the people to know that we are a Houston-based mattress manufacturing company, and customers will get a mattress that is catered just for you and your sleep needs.” In keeping with those family values, Texas Mattress Makers is closing its doors this year for Memorial Day. That is no small task. Memorial Day is synonymous with mattress sales and considered one of the biggest selling days for mattresses in the country. “It makes me sick to see this day exploited, just be-

cause it is a long weekend to have more sales and earn more revenue,” Youval said. “We want to close to honor those who have fallen and for those who continue to serve, because this day is not supposed to be about sales. This day is to commemorate those who have given their lives, so that we can live here and own a business to make money and live a good and free life.” Youval was born and raised in Israel and served in the Israeli Defense Forces himself. He understands, better than most perhaps, the value of the holiday and what it means. “Memorial Day is the time we take to reflect on the folks in the military and the sacrifice they have given for our country,” Youval said. “I believe on Memorial Day you should not be in business, but reflect on those who gave their lives for our country as well as honor those who are serving today. “Our country did not evolve into what it is without some people sacrificing for it. I find it dirty to make money on Memorial Day. This is something I wholeheartedly believe in and I think it’s the right thing to

do. If we lose money, so be it — God will provide the difference.” When it comes to buying a mattress, Youval said there is Texas Mattress Makers, and then there are the competitors. “Our competitors are not mattress stores,” Youval said. “They sell you what they have. We are a manufacturer, and we sell people the mattresses that they need.” Youval said when customers visit his stores, the first order of business is a short discussion on how they sleep and if they experience any discomforts. “We will then address them and fit (them) into a mattress that actually supports their body,” Youval said. “It will not be the most expensive or least expensive, but the one that supports you in the right manner depending on how you sleep. We will tailor-make the mattress for you, and it won’t cost you any more if you would buy a mattress off the shelf. “We are the only ones in the city of Katy that can show you the distinct differences between each mattress, and prepare a mattress that will be the right feel for that particular person.” Youval has passed along his work ethic and pride in the business to every one of his employees, including those working at the Katy location, which is the second venue after the initial location on Navigation in Houston. “I don’t want anyone to think that if they go to Katy and not Houston, they are not getting the same quality

8 / Katy Today /May 2018

of service from us,” Youval said. “They are getting the same quality and knowledge in Katy that they would get in Houston. “Lax runs the Katy location, and there are not enough good words for me to say about this gentleman. He truly cares that the customer gets the right thing. If you go to the Katy location and he doesn’t feel he can sell the right mattress for you, he won’t sell it to you. It’s not about selling you a mattress, but selling you the proper mattress.” All employees of Texas Mattress Makers have spent time on the production line making the mattresses before moving on to the sales end of the business. “All the components that it takes to make a mattress for you, they have to know it,” Youval said. “We are not a sales organization, but we want to educate you. We will not allow you to buy the wrong mattress. You have to take care of your customers. You have to understand the product and what goes in that product. “We understand that buying a bed is an investment, and it should be because you spend a third of your life on a mattress. Sleep is the number one aspect that you can have for your health. Just make us one of your stops and let us educate you. If you don’t want to buy from us, you don’t have to, but give us a try. We will impart some wisdom on you that you won’t find on the internet or find anywhere else.”

“I started working at a bedding and furniture manufacturing company over 35 years ago. At that time, Texas Mattress Makers was not part of my plan. My original goal was to make the highest quality products for the best possible price. Around 2011, I began to notice an increase in mattress returns, despite the fact that there was nothing wrong with the beds in terms of their components, design, or construction. Upon further investigation, I came to a revolutionary conclusion: each of these beds were sold to the wrong person. A mattress is not a ‘one size its all’ product. A bed that is comfortable and supportive for me might not be the right it for your sleep needs. Unfortunately, I learned that the sales teams at the majority of retailers selling our products were not properly trained to it a customer to the right bed for their sleep. This revelation led to the decision to open Texas Mattress Makers, a store that not only produces mattresses to sell directly to the public, but also sold each bed with the expertise needed to it you to the best option based on your speciic sleep needs. We continue to make all of our mattresses inside our

factory in Houston, Texas. Each of our Mattress Experts has made mattresses by hand. We have a thorough understanding of mattress components and how they come together to affect your sleep. Your personal sleep needs are our top priority, and our Mattress Experts are here to it you to the right mattress for your body so you wake up feeling well-rested and refreshed.’ – Youval Meicler, owner & founder

Katy non-profit mission helps provide clothing to children living in poverty By Valerie Sweeten Showing God’s love by providing clothing to children at risk and those living in poverty has been Katy non-profit, Clothed By Faith’s mission since their inception in July 2013. Clothed By Faith has made a substantial impact on the community since their humble beginnings when founder Abi Morton started in her garage while raising a new baby and toddler. Her pastor has challenged everyone to go abroad and meet the needs of unreached people, but it was then Morton realized there were people in need of assistance in Katy. Through Clothed By Faith, Morton’s goal has been to demonstrate her intentions through provision and clothing as well as love, hope and dignity. Her efforts have reached thousands. “As our name and reputation spread, the demand for our service has meant we have had to grow significantly. To date, we have served close to 35,000 people,” said Rebecca Earnshaw, Executive Assistant, Marketing, Events and Development Manager at Clothed By Faith.

After Hurricane Harvey, the demand was dire. With multiple locations, Clothed By Faith was able to reach to an incredible amount of people. Two pop-up shops were set up, one at Deer Park First Church in southeast Houston and the other at Crosspoint Church in Katy. They also ran a mobile clothing closet at Katy Christian Ministries. In 2017, Clothed By Faith served more than 18,000 people with 64 percent of which were after Harvey. “In the 13 days that the pop-up shops were open, we served 7,730 people, which is just short of the 7,900 we served for the whole of 2016,” Earnshaw said. Clothed By Faith is still processing on average 800 requests per month. In March, they partnered with Cinco Ranch Church of Christ on Mason Road to hold a clothing giveaway for people living in the neighborhoods surrounding the church affected by the flooding. More than 390 people were served with a week’s worth of clothing explained Earnshaw. Another important aspect of Clothed By Faith is the commitment of their volunteers to the community. With Harvey,

May 2018 / Katy Today / 13

volunteers performed a whopping 5,138 number of hours during this time. Many had never volunteered with Clothed By Faith before and have now become regular volunteers with Clothed By Faith at their Katy and Deer Park, locations according to Earnshaw. Being accessible to the community is how Clothed By Faith hopes to continue to meet demands for various needs. Their founding branch is in Katy, and their southeast Houston branch in Deer Park, and they sort donations and puts together bags of clothing for clients at both locations. There are also three Clothed By Faith closets throughout the city and are located at Covenant House, Park Youth Ranch and Lieutenants House. These closets allow these organizations to meet the immediate need of people arriving at their facilities, sometimes with just the clothes they are wearing Earnshaw said. Clothed By Faith is also present at monthly Hope Impacts breakfast events as well as the annual Katy Thanksgiving Feast where they run a clothing giveaway. Clothing giveaways are also held for residents in the Danover area of Old Katy, said Earnshaw. Reaching their clients is what’s important. “Clients come to us for a variety of reasons, homelessness, low income and disaster crisis being just a few of

14 / Katy Today /May 2018

them,” Earnshaw said. “Clients can fill out a clothing request form on our website if they are in need of clothing and are able to give us their sizes and any specific likes or needs. We also work with more than 130 different nonprofits, churches, groups and organizations throughout Katy and Houston areas who refer clients to us, including school districts and government departments.” Volunteers are the backbone of Clothed By Faith and are greatly appreciated, Earnshaw said. “We have more than 300 volunteers who work with us at our locations sorting donations and making up bags for our clients. They’re also our muscle team who assist us with lifting, carrying and errands,” she said. On average, about 1,600 hours per month are donated by Clothed By Faith volunteers. Volunteers are always in need as requests continue to grow Earnshaw said. Anyone interested in volunteering can reach Clothed By Faith at volunteer@clothedbyfaith.org. The future is bright for Clothed By Faith with community support. “As we grow, we are very lucky to have donors who support us. However, to maintain the numbers of clients served, we need people to consider partnering with us on a monthly basis, just $10 will clothe one person for one week,” Earnshaw said.

Sara Bernard is pictured with her husband Wesley Harris

Love of reading

leads to weaving of fictional novels for Katy Author

By Valerie Sweeten What began as an exploration into writing as a child grew from her love of reading for Katy author Sara Barnard. Barnard, recently married with the last surname of Harris, has a very long history of weaving fictional tales from not only her imagination but also personal experiences and more. It began in the third grade for Barnard, who wrote about an animal she loved, stray tomcat, J. Thomas O’Malley. Her love for writing never faded. Continuing to pursue writing stories, she made the choice in 2009 to begin her first book, A Heart to Hold. When an editor picked it up for publication with the only requirement being she wrote three more in a series, the light bulb went off for her. “What I learned as I wrote was that first novel was amazing, and I love passing on what I’ve learned to others,” Barnard said. “When I began submitting A Heart on Hold, I had an editor offer to take it for publication, but only if I

18 / Katy Today /May 2018

wrote three more books in the series. That was when it hit me. I could do this. So, I did, and the Everlasting Heart series was born.” Barnard has never looked back from that. Series in multiple genres have sprouted from her creative genius in all types of settings. Find Barnard’s name on stories, some in a series, about Amish fiction, contemporary romance, light horror, Christian western, timeslip Young Adult horror, children’s picture books, and children’s nonfiction plant books. She also has a medieval novel, As it Pleases the King, which won first place at Romance Writers of America’s 2016 awards ceremony, as well as several World War II/Holocaust novels that are in various stages of production. Barnard has also been chosen to teach a webinar class on writing at Romance Writers of America University. “I have always loved history, so when it came to choosing subject matter for writing, I naturally gravitated toward

historical characters and settings. That is what the Everlasting Heart series is; a pair of lovers during the Civil War who must overcome people and situations just to survive and find a bit of happiness,” Barnard said. Her Everlasting Heart series spans from pre-Civil War Arkansas to the battlefields and all the way to California during the Reconstruction, when people were left trying to make sense of life following the Civil War. “I love to throw in cameo appearances of some wellknown, and some less well known, historical figures like Harriet Tubman, Calamity Jane, all the Earps, and Texas Gunfighter Clay Allison,” Barnard added. Barnard also likes to insert real life experiences such as battling thyroid disease to cancer in her tales. She used her 20-year struggle with thyroid disease and the removal of her thyroid in her book, Like In A Heart On Hold for her heroine, Charlotte. However, there was a twist. “The doctors decided mine was misbehaving and needed to be removed. They took it out, and the recovery was the absolute pits. Since I endured it, I had to put my heroine, Charlotte, through it too. Instead of thyroid disease, she had her neck slit by a drunken Yankee defector. Luckily, Harriet Tubman finds her and sews up the wound with a hair from a horse’s tail. When I received a cancer diagnosis, so did several of my characters. Some survived, some did not. It was a very uncertain time,” Barnard said. When her cancer treatment brought her to MD Anderson in Katy, Barnard fell in love with the community and decided to move here. On Feb. 1, she and her now husband, Wesley

Harris, owner of As You Wish Plumbing, signed on their dream home. Together, they have six children from 5 years old to 13 along with their several rescue animals. Barnard became a teacher in 2014 and is currently working in Special Education at Katy High School. Katy is the perfect environment for Barnard’s family, work and of course, to fuel her creative spark. She recently signed publishing contract with Vinspire Publishing for a four-book Amish romance series titled Rebekah’s Keepsakes series. “In Katy, we enjoy so many things, mostly right her in our neighborhood. Ice cream at Cocohodo is probably our favorite past time, Krav Maga for all the kids, Katy Mills Mall and eating dinner at a different place every night. Best of all though are the people. Katy folks are the best,” she said. Read more about Barnard and her adventuresome books at www.sarabarnardbooks.com and www.facebook.com/ sarabarnardboks .

Katy donut shop aims to give back to community By Valerie Sweeten

Adding a little sweetness in everyone’s daily lives is what Hurts Donuts does, and now they want to do a more with their upcoming Hurts Donut Run to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Hurts Donuts Run in Katy, a 5K running series, was held April 14 with a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society. At the finish line, participants found Hurts Donuts waiting with refreshments and freshly brewed coffee. Matt Whitney, owner of Hurts Donuts in Katy, said they decided to host the run because it’s been the community support that has made Hurts Donuts a success. Said Whitney: “Support for Hurts products and brand from all local communities has been nothing short of staggering. The Hurts Donut Run is a great opportunity for us to bring an event to our local community while getting more acquainted with the

people that support Hurts with their patronage every day.” Since this is the inaugural Katy run, Whitney believes he had 500 participants. “It’s a run Hurts style, so there will be lots of music, the best donuts around, and possibly even some running. You can run fast or walk slow, sweating is optional, just come have fun and get a free donut,” said Whitney. Supporting the Multiple Sclerosis Society stems from a longtime friendship Whitney has with Hurts co-founder Tim Clegg. When Clegg was diagnosed with MS nearly five years ago, the partnership with the Multiple Sclerosis Society was formed. Whitney also has another friend recently diagnosed, and has seen firsthand the challenges presented to both the individual and their families. “Engaging with the MS Society is near and dear to our hearts,” Whitney added. Hurts Donuts, located at 9555 Spring Green Blvd, Suite J, has its own story to tell about their humble beginnings before

May 2018 / Katy Today / 21

coming to Katy. When Clegg founded Hurts Donuts in late 2013, Whitney has recently taken an executive position in Tennessee. Clegg asked Whitney if he wanted to help him franchise a business, but then he found out it was a 24/7 donut shop open only for 10 weeks. “I laughed, and said no way, I wasn’t interested,” said Whitney. “Fast-forward a little over four years, and Hurts has grown to 16 stores. Sweet 16 happens to be the Katy store.” Whitney then left corporate America and returned to Texas. He partnered with friends, Justin and Abby Brasell and brought Hurts Donuts to Katy. Now, Hurts Donuts aren’t your average donut shop creations. They’re, let’s say, a little over the top, but in a good way. Flavors and designs initially came from Clegg and his wife, Kas, who still spearhead many of their unique campaigns. Whitney said the Hurts family of stores is a very tight knit group of highly creative people, so don’t be surprised by what pops up on their shelves. “We’ve got some new donuts to be unveiled soon, Jolly Rancher anyone? We’re partnering with Delish at a national level to release a flavor campaign later in the year, but that’s all I can say at the moment, or I might lose my donut-making hands. We also have a fun themed campaign coming very soon, Harry Potter fans,” he said. It’s been the “amazing, even overwhelming” response from the community that inspires the donut crew. “We knew our Katy Hurts Donut would be a good draw, but I always joke the first six to eight weeks literally almost killed me and my staff because the response was so incredible,” said Whitney. “There were days on end without sleep; a 30-minute nap in the ambulance behind the store here and

there if possible. There were lots of bloodshot eyes, but it was totally worth it. I’ve had the opportunity to meet so many new folks and families. It’s awesome.” As a brand-new business in Katy, Whitney said they’re still striving how to best serve their community. Whether it’s having Cupid (a grown man with wings and a diaper) deliver donuts or dressing up in an Easter Bunny costume for an Instagram pic, or even making 1,000 donuts overnight for an out-of-town WHAAMbulance run, there is no typical day. Hurts Donuts, larger than your standard donut, come between 50 and 70 varieties such as Fire in the Hole. It’s just like it sounds. It’s a donut hole delivered with cream cheese, jalapeno, and a sweet, spicy Sriracha glaze. It’s all about the customer, Whitney explained. “I’d say all three shifts, 24/7 or as we like to say, 25/8, show up with a commitment to quality products and guest experience. Sure, we make awesome donuts, but we’re in the business of creating experiences, one bite at a time,” he said. Without his dedicated crew, including Layne Long, who have all endured grueling hours, time away from family, and numerous “Oh, no” moments, Hurts Donuts, which opened in December 2017, wouldn’t be possible. “We had to hire 92 staff members to get the store off the ground, completely crazy, but we’ve just about got things dialed in now. Just like our donuts, everyone on our staff is unique, and brings something different to the store. Now that the long lines have somewhat subsided, our staff has settled in. I’m proud of all of them for hanging tough with big smiles, and can-do attitudes those first few months,” Whitney said. For more information on Hurts Donuts, go to their Facebook page at HURTS DONUTS-KATY, TX.
