WILDWOOD SENIOR FUN DAY MAY 16, 2018•MILL HOUSE EVENT CENTER
JUNE 27, 2018 LUMBERTON ISD DOME
This has been a special year in the Southeast Texas senior community and for us at the Southeast Texas Senior Resource Guide & SETXSeniors. com. We had a great Spring Port Arthur Senior Expo. Seniors got answers to questions about caption telephones, home health, hospice, American Red Cross Harvey Relief, and a wide range of other senior services. Fresh Prep introduced seniors to their line of healthy meals (and provided a delicious free lunch), and we all had cake to celebrate everyone’s birthdays from the past year. BINGO was a highlight with lots of seniors going home with restaurant gift cards. One attendee was presented with $100 in our cash drawing hosted by Shodi Jacobson Insurance. As we write this, we are putting the final touches on preparation for our Silsbee Senior Fun Day. We have a great caterer providing lunch, a special singer, trivia with great prizes, and we will have a $100 cash drawing. This issue does have a couple of new developments that we are excited about - we have our first female cover veteran and we have our first articles about veterans from the Korea and Vietnam era. We are also providing part two on local fellowship opportunities at East Texas and Golden Triangle churches. Are you looking for a day of fun and access to senior services? Don’t miss our upcoming 2018 Southeast Texas Senior Expo Series Events. Wildwood Senior Fun Day, Wednesday May 16th. The Mill House. Lumberton Senior Expo, Wednesday June 27th. Lumberton Dome. We would like to send special thanks to Texas Hotshot Photography and photographer Chad R. Banning for today’s cover photos and images of our featured veteran. Is there anything special you would like to see in upcoming articles for the senior community? Call or e-mail anytime.

United States Army that he mostly remembers as having been endless marching and drilling. He was happy to return to East Texas. His father had moved to Nacogdoches and was working at the Frost Johnson Sawmill. Earl joined his father at the sawmill. He had a number of other jobs throughout his life including heavy equipment operator, brick laying, concrete work, driving 18 wheelers, and constructing cinder block buildings. He was able to get a comfortable home in Nacogdoches and enjoyed fishing in the woods around Hemphill. To hear him tell it, there may have been times that were more fishing than working! Earl has survived two open heart surgeries. He looks back on his life and remembers enjoying just about everything he has ever done. Today he lives at Avalon Place in Kirbyville where he is known for singing “hillbilly songs”.

Brain Expert Dr. Joe Bates to Speak at Lumberton Senior Expo

As we get older, many of us start to tell ourselves a little lie. We tell ourselves that we don’t have a good memory. Most of the time, we don’t know we are lying – we believe it. We don’t fully understand the capabilities of our beautiful brains. My name is Dr. Joe Bates, and I enjoy helping Texas seniors understand the remarkable power of our minds. As a psychiatrist, I have the privilege of changing minds every day to choose better health by changing the way people experience life. Maybe you have become used to saying “I can’t remember stuff anymore!”? Don’t let yourself believe this. What if you COULD have a great memory, or more energy, or a zest for trying something new in life? Don’t let getting older stop you. The studies are in, and you can have a

great memory. You can have more energy. You can have a love for trying new things. Let’s first talk more about your memory since it’s the number one topic seniors ask me about when I give talks or classes around Texas on brain fitness, neuroplasticity, and neurogenesis. ‘Memory’ is something seniors have been taught, “It’s just going to go away as we age”. In fact, we should just expect to be forgetful! Even young adults just say, “I don’t have a good memory, that’s just how I am”. BUNK! Studies have now shown that how we live

and treat our minds, can make a huge difference and impact on the quality of our day to day living. Just as we have to use our bodies in order to keep muscles strengthened and eat healthy, we can actually increase our cognitive power to repair our brain, allowing new neural connections to fire and blood supply to be increased in certain areas of the brain that most of us never thought possible. This is what is called neuroplasticity or neurogenesis – growing or repairing the brain. It’s a fact: healthy people, or people with chronic illness and even people who have lived through traumatic events can help their brains

feel better by exercise – not physical workouts, but brain workouts become even MORE important as we get older. So, what really works to increase brain power so we actually feel a difference? Lifestyle has 100% everything to do with our outlook on life. Most people just have NO IDEA how to “workout” something they can’t see, their brain. That’s why I started educating people about braincardio™ - a lifestyle and very specific series of games I’ve developed for your brain that are proven to increase energy, memory, clarity, well-being, and interest to try new things! I want you to have the BEST LIFE possible no matter what’s going on right now. When seniors have something to look forward to, there is cognitive thinking going on. The brain is work-
26
ing, processing, and making memories. It is “working out!” We can call this “braincardio™”, because it’s like breathing new life into your mind. There are hormones in your body that increases certain chemicals in the brain that make us feel good and happy, of course, affecting your mood, affecting your outlook. Without hope, there is less involvement in life and sadness or loss of purpose sets in. There’s no reason to want to get up and take on a new day with Possibility. Hope is vital to health. Hope gives us the ability to want to stay strong and ‘ready’ for whatever anticipated activity is ahead. This could be as big as a vacation or even just a phone call with someone you love and who makes you laugh! Certainly, this is why starting to

“exercise” our brain is fundamental for someone enjoying being in a total “state of great health”, mind, and yes, body. When you THINK SMARTER, it brings you a feeling of completeness & fulfillment that would otherwise be lacking. The old saying, “Use It or Lose It” is even more true today with all we have seen in the study of brain health and why I know you’ll love braincardio™ and all it offers! MEET Dr. Joe Bates at The Lumberton Senior Expo, June 27 Dr. Joe Bates is a double board-certified, award-winning psychiatrist who developed braincardio™ for people who want to increase their brain power and outlook on life. Non-Medical Home care for East Texas and Golden Triangle Seniors Southeast Texas senior citizens are incredibly independent. We built the world’s largest petrochemical complex. We led the way in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Southeast Texans invented rock and roll and took country music to new heights. It can be difficult to admit that now we could use someone to go to the grocery store with us or to 28
stay over with us at night to keep us company. There is a time when we all should admit that just a little bit of help would be a blessing. After all we have accomplished, we deserve a little help around the house. That is what Outreach Health Services does.
