President’s Greeting

Military Coordinator’s Welcome

Steven L. Kwast

Fiesta Flambeau® Parade Association, Inc.

Lieutenant General in the United States Air Force

As President, I am excited to welcome everyone to the 2018 “Three Centuries–One City” Fiesta Flambeau® Parade, the premier event of Fiesta®. I was born and raised on the west side of San Antonio. I have an emotional and distinct connection with our city. I am a true Spurs fan as well as a whole-hearted Fiesta advocate. I have been a proud member of this organization for almost 20 years and I am extemely humbled serving as president during our celebratory 70th year. Since 1948, along the 2.6 mile parade route, the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade has illuminated the streets of beautiful downtown San Antonio and entertained over 700,000 street spectators. For many families, the parade is a long standing tradition. With the efforts of a dedicated Executive Board, hardworking membership and over 200 volunteers, we will continue our legacy as the largest illuminated parade in the nation. So be sure to get your beads, medals and confetti sticks ready to showcase your Fiesta spirit and sparkle on parade night! Viva Flambeau®!

Viva San Antonio! Viva Fiesta! On behalf of all who serve—the active duty, government civilians, veterans, and military family members who call San Antonio home—welcome to Fiesta San Antonio. Congratulations on the 70th anniversary of the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade – a proud and colorful legacy unique to San Antonio and celebrated by thousands. We join you in remembering the Battle of San Jacinto, the heroes of the Alamo and San Antonio’s 300th anniversary -- “Three Centuries – One City.” My wife Joni and I are new to San Antonio, and we are excited to experience the excitement and fun that Fiesta brings. We appreciate the military ties with Fiesta – dating back to 1891. Our Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, and Coast Guard representatives—the Military Ambassadors— represent the finest of our services to attend Fiesta events. Plus, the military provides many ceremonial units at events and parades. We know this year’s celebration will be spectacular! Viva San Antonio! Viva Fiesta!

President’s Welcome

Mayor’s Welcome

Billy Mitchell

Ron Nirenberg

Fiesta® San Antonio Commission

Mayor - City of San Antonio

VIVA FIESTA! Those are the words that you hear every year for 11 days in April. This is the time of year when all of San Antonio and visitors from around the world come together to celebrate our heritage, have fun and raise money for hundreds of nonprofit organizations. It’s a Party with a Purpose! Whether this is your first Fiesta or your 50th, we encourage you to attend and participate in as many of the events as possible and enjoy the festive celebration.

Welcome to the 2018 Fiesta Flambeau® parade. Fiesta Flambeau® is always exciting, and this year’s theme, “Three Centuries-One City” will make the Tricentennial version even more special. Fiesta Flambeau® and the Tricentennial are a perfect combination.

For most of my life Fiesta has been a part of my life in one way or another. As a kid, I remember attending the Flambeau Parade, the River Parade, the Battle of Flowers Parade and NIOSA every year. Since then I have become a member of the Order of the Alamo and the San Antonio German Club, as well as the Texas Cavaliers, serving as Parade Marshal in 2007 and Commander 2009-2010. But my most rewarding Fiesta role (until now) was serving as King Antonio LXXXIX in 2011 as it was all about giving back to the community. Whether we were supporting children’s charities financially or just attending schools or events where the children love Fiesta and King Antonio, it was all about the giving. No one cared about my name; they just loved King Antonio and the traditions surrounding the title. I was able to spread love and encouragement through my “Don’t Stop Believing” campaign, which urged children never to stop believing in themselves, their family and friends, and their faith. Lastly, I must mention the military as we are Military City USA and Fiesta is proof positive of that statement. We celebrate the military throughout the week and have 10 Military Ambassadors that are an official part of Fiesta and are celebrated at every event they attend. One of the commanding Generals last year made the comment that a lot of cities talk the talk that they are a “Military City” but Fiesta is proof that San Antonio walks the walk. Viva Fiesta! Bill Mitchell – President, San Antonio Fiesta Commission

4 “Three Centuries-One City”

Our unique culture, friendly atmosphere and, of course, Fiesta medals are all part of the magical experience that is the night parade, lighting our city streets in a kaleidoscopic display. San Antonio has been able to transform what was once a vision, into the largest night parade in the nation attracting millions of spectators from all around the world. This year, our Tricentennial celebration adds an overlay of historical significance to the dazzling parade experience. The eclectic display of lights, colors, music, food, drinks and music is always enchanting. The Tricentennial edition is unforgettable. On behalf of my City Council colleagues and the City of San Antonio, I want to extend my deepest gratitude to the Fiesta Flambeau® Parade Association and countless volunteers for ensuring that the nation’s greatest night parade continues to be the best. Viva Fiesta! Ron Nirenberg Mayor

“Three Centuries-One City” 19

The Fiesta Flambeau® Night Parade is nationally known as “America’s Largest Illuminated Night Parade”. This spectacular nighttime parade annually attracts more than half a million street spectators and continues to grow each year. The parade is considered the premier event of the 11 days of Fiesta San Antonio. The idea of this illuminated night parade was the brainchild of Reynolds Andricks who was a long time Fiesta entrepreneur. In 1948 he recommended that a ‘new’ parade take place at night and that it be called Fiesta Flambeau®. Taking the inspiration from the night parades of Mardi Gras in New Orleans he believed, with help, he could create a unique event in San Antonio. He contacted William Petmecky from the Texas hill country of Fredericksburg. Mr. Petmecky was widely recognized as a ‘Festival Impresario’. He became nationally known as a creator of folk festivals and was very delighted when asked to help create Fiesta’s first illuminated night parade. It was decided that the most effective way to light the parade route was to have torch brigades. Each brigade consisted of four men carrying five-foot poles with lighted flares attached. These flares are similar to those used by police as warning devices at accident scenes. The torch units marched at intervals between each ten parade entries, lighting the evening for all to see. Bands attached flashlights to their instruments and floats lit themselves up in whatever unique fashion the designer created. Mr. Andricks did not want his parade to look like troops marching to war. He wanted a

variety of entries and variety of colors. He wanted fun and got it. First the Alzafar Shriners came in with their fez-topped band and a group of their famed trick cyclists. Next, he solicited commercial firms to join – they could afford fancy floats. He convinced them that the visibility of the Flambeau Parade would be good for business. Soon, civil clubs and social clubs became a part of Flambeau. These groups were intrigued by Mr. Andricks’ idea to stage “a parade of nations where Americans who have pride in their heritage, have an opportunity to build a float (emblematic) of their country”. As an alumnus of the University of Texas, he saw to it that the 350-piece University of Texas Longhorn Band led his Flambeau Parade and that has now become an annual tradition. This Association is very committed and dedicated in continuing to make the Flambeau Parade a unique Fiesta event. In 1996, with the help of the Boy Scouts of America, the Association introduced propane torches to replace the flare-style torches. These propane torches are seen in two other parades in the United States, the St. Paul Winter Carnival and the San Francisco Chinese New Year’s Parade. Another tradition established was to have the Fire Fighters Association (as a group) carrying propane torches at the beginning of the parade – one for every year of Flambeau’s existence. The firefighters have since turned in their torches and now carry the fifty state flags of our nation. It was also in 1996 that the Flambeau Parade broke a record of having over half a million street spectators. This record continues year after year.

The Fiesta Flambeau® parade is now 70 years young. Here are a 20 “Three Centuries-One City”
