The Quote That Totally Changed A Life

Katelyn Mullin was in the middle of yoga class when her instructor shared a quotation that she desperately needed to hear. In her mind, the teacher was speaking directly to her, as she wrote in her blog, “causing his words to reverberate in my bones.”

It was a wake-up call and she chose to listen.

Mullin had recently lost her father suddenly to cancer and, crippled by grief, felt as if “nothing would ever be good again.” Her job began to lose its luster and she didn’t like the way she felt inside, which translated to how she felt she looked and how she acted.

Katelyn was tired of seeing friends accelerating in their lives while, for her, each day, “felt like a challenge I had to overcome.”

She was broken from top to bottom and from the inside out – until she heard the quote that literally changed her life.

“If you can’t change a situation, change your mind.”

She made it her mantra, writing on post-it notes and sticking them everywhere: on her bedroom mirror, across the back of her phone case and even on her laptop keyboard. She doodled the words on her to-do list and wrote it in her journal. It became her go-to response to every difficult situation.

She wanted to feel better and now she had a plan.

While there were still moments when negativity would hijack her thoughts and “get the best of me,” Katelyn vowed to wake up each day and try.

In a single moment, Katelyn’s life was changed forever when she realized that feeling angry and upset wouldn’t change her situation and often made it worse.

Things got better and she felt better because she chose to think better.

Katelyn Mullen knew exactly what had happened, how it happened and, most importantly, why it happened: “Changing something I could control, like my mind, made all the difference.”

Sometimes, when we find ourselves in the deepest of valleys, the inspiration we are “dying to hear” comes to us at the right moment and breathes new life into our wounded soul.

Augmented Reality aug·men·ted re·al·i·ty noun

1. a technology that superimposes a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, thus providing a composite view.

As complicated as that sounds, Augmented Reality (AR) is not really complicated from the reader’s side. A reader looks at a real world object (a page of our magazine) through a smartphone application (LayAR app) and can see added content not visible on the printed page. This content could be a video or a slide show of images related to the advertisement. It could be a live link to take the reader to a webpage, a direct dial phone link, or a connected email account.

The possibilities for augmented reality to enhance the experience are many.

get busy preparing their entry for this most unlikely of river parades! There is no entry fee, and there are no rules except that your entry must float, so decorate up your best row boat, kayak, inner tube, raft, tractor tire tube, stryo-packing material……if it floats, it can be in the parade.

We will even allow trolling motors for those not wanting to paddle the river! We have had some great entries in the past so - Get busy! Best Nonprofit, Best Business, Best Individual or Family entries. Have some fun and maybe win a Great Trophy!

If you are more of a beach lover, no worries, the Bandera Coastline – graciously donated by Bandera Rock & Road, will be the perfect place for you to unwind!

You might already know that Texas is the country’s leading oil-producing state, but were you aware that we are also the leader in wind power generation? According to the US Energy Information Agency, the electricity produced by wind power in Texas now exceeds that by the state’s two nuclear power plants.

The City of Georgetown has been replacing more traditional electrical generation with wind and solar and expects to be powered by all-renewable energy this year with completion of a solar facility in west Texas.

Pedernales Electric Cooperative in Johnson City until recently sold its customers power generated by other companies; now the utility is venturing into community solar.

The facility on the west side of Johnson City is one of three providing electricity to its customers.

A PEC spokesman explained it this way – as only about 15% of residences are available for solar power installation, because of ownership, occupancy, or financial ability, community solar allows their customers to participate in the development of solar power.

The solar facilities put electrical power into the lines for everyone to use, but the cost is slightly lower, and their allotment for this program was met very quickly.

The City of Fredericksburg has an agreement available for residents who want to install solar panels on their homes, which will allow them to sell power to the City when they are producing more power then they are using and draw from the City when

they are not producing enough or at night. Because the cost of electricity in the City is low, this option has proven too expensive for all but a handful of residents.

Others living in the rural parts of the hill county may find that their rates are higher or that they are building in an area without direct access to an electric line, and some have opted to be self-sufficient with a combination of solar and batteries to store the electricity they generate.

The solar panel installation on the home pictured cost $33,000, and the owner received a 30% Investment Tax Credit from the Federal Government. When the system generates more power than needed, the excess is purchased by Central Texas Electric Cooperative. At night or on cloudy days, the homeowner draws power from CTEC, which eliminates the need for a back-up generator or batteries.

At this point, the leading source of electrical power in Texas is natural gas, followed by coal, non-hydroelectric renewables, and nuclear. Hydroelectric is a very small part of the picture here, and overall Texas residential electric rates are about 12% below the national average.

Recent tariffs imposed by the Federal Government may slow down the development of solar power, but Georgetown is taking the long-term view, and are optimistic that their production of electricity from renewable sources will have more predictable pricing than oil and gas-powered utilities can offer.

Landscaping with native (and adapted) plants is more than a trendy, politically-correct endeavor. It’s the right thing to do.

We live in the Texas Hill Country with its broad skies of bleached denim blue, its shallow alkaline soil freckled with limestone, and its all or nothing weather patterns.

This is my home, and as much as I’d like to populate my landscape with lush azaleas and peonies, my attempt to do so would require an excess of soil augmentation, lots of water and constant attention, with scant hope for success and every promise of frustration.

Finding and using alternative native plants is a viable way to help protect and preserve our water resources, provide food sources and shelter to our native birds and insects, and create a truer sense of place in our gardens.

The Boerne chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT, pronounced “nip-sot”) is home to Operation NICE!™, a program dedicated to increasing the demand for and supply of native plants available.

NICE, which is the acronym for Natives Instead of Common Exotics, has as its mission to save water, save money, nurture wildlife, and encourage the choice of native plants to preserve the Hill Country heritage and habitat.

Each month since their launch in April 2002, NICE!™ volunteers select a Plant of the Month (POM), write an instruction sheet on the selected plant (the first one was Texas Mountain Laurel, Sophora segundiflora) and contact local nurseries to offer these plants for sale to the general gardening public.

Introduction of non-native plants is almost never a willfully malevolent deed.

Too often invasive plants are brought into an environment with good intentions. King Ranch Bluestem (Bothriochloa ischaemum), an Asian and Central European grass used for livestock forage, was introduced in the 1920s and 1930s by the state highway department as an erosion control for roadsides.

This perennial grassy weed is not only winter hardy, drought tolerant and well-adapted to poor soils, it produces

seeds throughout the year. Unfortunately, KR Bluestem has completely taken over pastures, outcompeting native grasses and replacing our native prairies with this single crop (monoculture). Birds won’t eat the seeds, and bees and butterflies are not attracted to its purplish flowering seed heads.

It’s little wonder the Union of Concerned Scientists currently lists KR Bluestem as an invasive, terrestrial plant threatening the abundance and diversity of native species.

Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center sites invasive species as the second greatest threat to biodiversity (after habitat destruction).

Some other common exotics that have flourished into invasive threats include Chinese Tallow (Triadica sebifera), Chinaberry (Meliz azedarach), Nandina (Nandina domestica), Giant Reed (Arundo donax) and Ligustrum (Condalia).

Like KR Bluestem, most of these were introduced with good intentions, and those of you who took catechism class know where good intentions lead.

What can we do?

We can educate ourselves which species are classified as dangerous invasives and, if we have them in our landscape, we remove them and substitute a suitable native alternative with similar growth habit. Your local NPSOT chapter and the Master Gardeners have lists to help you. For example, Prairie Flameleaf Sumac (Rhus lanceolata) is recommended as a native replacement for Nandiana. Texas Mountain Laurel is a lovely and appropriate replacement for Ligustrum.

We can support local nurseries and professional growers who supply native plants.

Become an activist consumer.

We can help remove undesirable plants from our environment. Groups such as Texas Invasives have eradication programs where volunteers manually remove invasive plants from parks and nature reserves.

All we can do is our best, and, as Maya Angelo said, “Then when you know better, do better.”

Giant Reed, Arundo donax, is classified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as an introduced, invasive, noxious plant in Texas and several other states. It is a tall perennial canetype grass that can grow up to 20 feet tall.

Groups like Healthy Creeks Initiative, formed in 2016 in partnership with landowners on the Blanco and Pedernales rivers, are working to manage Arundo and improve the health of riparian areas.

Better Batter P i e

Better Batter Pie Makes 9 servings.

My husband’s mother used to bake what she called her “washday cobbler” when she needed a quick dessert. She’d make a sweet, buttery batter and fill it with strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, even fruit cocktail, and serve it topped with vanilla Blue Bell ice cream. They were delicious, but the ones she made with fresh peaches were our favorites.

If you want to show your family and friends some lovin’ from the oven, then one of Beulah’s fresh fruit batter pies is a great way to win their hearts.

Ingredients: ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick) 1 cup unbleached, all-purpose flour 1 cup granulated sugar 1 Tbsp.baking powder ½ tsp. salt 1 cup whole milk 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups ripe peaches, peeled, pitted and cut into thick slices

Turbinado or brown sugar for garnish

Method: Preheat oven to 350°F. Place butter in an 8x8-inch glass baking dish and place dish in oven to melt butter.

In a large bowl, stir together flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Add milk and vanilla to flour mixture and stir well.

Remove baking dish from oven and pour hot melted butter into batter. Then pour the batter into the still-hot baking dish. The batter will start rising up the edges of the dish; this is normal.

Spoon peach slices into center of batter. Do not stir -- the batter will rise during baking and cover the fruit.

Bake at 350°F for 40 to 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

If desired, you can sprinkle Turbinado or brown sugar over top of pie after about 20 minutes, approximately half way through the baking time.

Serve warm with ice cream or at room temperature with whipped cream.

Corie and Paul Bratter negotiate their first apartment, eccentric neighbors, and a meddling mother while trying to learn how to live together. Paul just doesn’t understand Corie, as she sees it. He’s too staid, too boring and she just wants him to be a little more spontaneous, running “barefoot in the park” would be a start.

35 A Passion for Water Artist Profile: JoAnne Spencer Written by Carol Seminara

JoAnne Spencer Some artists’ works are instantly recognizable by their personal style. Jo Anne Spencer is one such painter. Her broad, loose backgrounds, swirling colors and semi-impressionistic blooms, especially roses, help identify her as an award-winning and eagerly collected watercolorists in the Texas Hill Country.

“I’ve done all media -- oil, pastel, pencil -- but watercolor is my passion,” Spencer said. “I love when paintings look ‘wet.’

You can see how water reacts and is reflected in the values and temperature

of the pigment, and how the colors flow into each other.”

Spencer wasn’t born with a paint brush in her hand, but she soon picked up one.

“Instead of a rattle, my mother gave me a brush to play with when I was a toddler.”

Her mother, an accomplished porcelain painter who also worked in oils, encouraged Spencer’s burgeoning interest. “I’m lucky to have been around art forever,” she said.

“I’ve been taking art lessons since I was about 8 years old.”

Spencer’s study of watercolor has continued her whole life, even as she and her husband, Bob, a marketing executive in the computer industry, moved their family from coast-to-coast. “Bob’s career demanded moving. Corporate head hunters would call with opportunities, and we were off for another adventure. We loved it,” she added, smiling, “but the three kiddos hated it.”

Added to the adventure was Spencer’s further development as a painter. “I was fortunate enough to study with some famous watercolorists across the country,” Spencer said.

Betts (in Louisiana), Betty Lou Schlemm (in Massachusetts), Al Brouillette (in Arlington, Texas), and Bud Biggs (in Dallas).

Spencer also studied with Edgar Whitney, whose book “The Complete Guide to Watercolor” remains a mainstay on many artist’s reference shelves, and with Charles Reid, author of 11 books on paintings directed to students at all levels.

About 21 years ago, the family moved to Fredericksburg from Dallas where Spencer variously owned an art gallery, an antiques store, and an interior design business in Salado.

In Fredericksburg, Spencer devotes much of her time and artistic energies to painting, sometime sharing her studio with Bob’s emerging efforts in oils.

Although she doesn’t teach, “per se,” Spencer is willing to share some of her techniques. She prefers working wet-into-wet (wet paint applied onto wet paint), and while she does some preliminary sketches, she doesn’t always “stick to the plan.”

“Start out big and wet,” she advises.

“Use the biggest brush you have, a good one that holds lots of paint. Don’t be stingy with good paper. (She recommends Arches 140# cold press.) And move your arm. It you paint with tiny little motions, your painting will look overworked and pinched. Don’t’ forget to save some ‘whites’ and have fun. The only answer to your question- Is it good? – is, Do I like it?”

Spencer has lately revisited painting in oils but said watercolor will always be her first love. “Watercolor lets you participate and interpret what you see in a much more involved way,” she said. “Watercolor is a free spirit, a little like me.”

Edward Steichen: In Exaltation of Flowers Through May 13, 2018

Rachofsky Quadrant Gallery Edward Jean Steichen, known for his photography, produced seven large mural paintings from 1911-1914 for financier Eugene Meyer and his wife, Agnes.

The murals underwent conservation treatment during the Summer of 2017 at the DMA and are on view together for the first time in more than 100 years.

Asian Textiles: Art and Trade Along the Silk Road Through December 9, 2018

Drawn from the DMA’s collection, this exhibition showcases fine examples of garments and ornamental hangings. The works on view come from India, Central Asia, China, and Japan, with some objects featuring colored ink paintings on textile backgrounds. The garments range from a Japanese fireman’s coat to an Indian sari and a Chinese dragon robe. Asian Textiles highlights the passage of luxury goods along the Silk Road between eastern Asia, India, and places like Uzbekistan. This historical trade route led to an interchange of arts and crafts from the Mediterranean to India and the Far East.

Hopi Visions: Journey of the Human Spirit Through December 2, 2018

The exhibition features a mural painting by Hopi artists Michael Kabotie and Delbridge Honanie displayed for the first time outside of Arizona and the Museum of Northern Arizona. The impressive work spans nearly five feet tall and forty-eight feet in length, with six distinct but interconnected panels. Journey of the Human Spirit narrates the history of the Hopi people, from the mythic emergence, through the arrival of Europeans, to the rebirth of Hopi traditions in the information age. The contemporary mural was inspired by figural wall paintings created prior to European contact. The mural will be complemented by ancient to contemporary objects from the DMA’s collection, including an ancestral Sikyatki Polychrome bowl with flower design and a modern kachina (katsina) doll of Palhik Mana, among works by other contemporary Hopi artists.

FROM THE LANDS OF ASIA: THE SAM AND MYRNA MYERS COLLECTION Through August 19, 2018 Renzo Piano Pavilion When Sam Myers was sent to Paris by

his law firm in the mid-1960s, he and his wife Myrna became so enamored with the city that they decided to make it their home. There, over the course of fifty years, they built an extraordinary art collection. Beginning by acquiring Greek and Roman antiquities, and eventually focusing on Asia, the Myers ended up assembling some five thousand works that, together, offer a very personal vision of the world of Asian art. This exhibition presents over four hundred objects selected from this remarkable collection, which until now has never been exhibited publicly in the United States, with works representing key periods in the history of the art of China, Japan, Tibet, and Korea.

Michelangelo and the Vatican: Masterworks from the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, Naples Through June 10, 2018

Masterworks by Michelangelo and his contemporaries highlight the artistic legacy of Pope Paul III and the vital role that drawing played in art production throughout Europe in the late 15th and 16th centuries. Michelangelo and the Vatican features drawings, cartoons, paintings, sculpture, and prints by Renaissance master Michelangelo and his predecessors and successors, including Raphael, Rubens, Tintoretto, and Titian.

Largely drawn from the renowned collection of the Capodimonte Museum in Naples, Italy, the exhibition presents some 40 works from the 16th century, many commissioned or completed during the papacy of Alessandro Farnese,

Pope Paul III. Remembered for his enthusiastic patronage of the arts in general, and of Michelangelo (1475–1564) in particular, Pope Paul III oversaw the completion of Michelangelo’s stupendous fresco The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel. San Antonio 1718: Art from Viceregal Mexico February 17 - May 13, 2018 A Tricentennial Exhibition San Antonio 1718: Art from Viceregal Mexico tells the story of the city’s first century through more than one hundred landscapes, portraits, narrative paintings, sculptures, and devotional and decorative objects, many of them never before exhibited in the United States. The exhibition is organized in three sections: People and Places, The Cycle of Life, and The Church.

San Antonio 1718 includes portraits of political and economic power, Spanish viceroys and military leaders who helped shape the destiny of the city. It explores the intrepid Franciscan missionaries who spearheaded the evangelization of the region, including Fray Antonio Margil de Jésus, known as the “Patron Saint of Texas,” and the religious figures who anchored their teachings such as the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception and her American manifestation, the Virgin of Guadalupe.

Celebrating the city’s deep Hispanic roots and cultural ties with Mexico, San Antonio 1718 features works by New Spain’s most talented eighteenth-century artists, including Cristobal de Vil-

lalpando (1649-1714), Miguel Cabrera (1695-1768), and José de Páez (17201790), as well as pieces by talented unknown vernacular artists.

Mi McNay es su McNay immerses visitors in a domestic setting that blurs the lines between art and life, creating a space that feels like home or visiting a good friend. Rooms furnished with artworks from the 18th century to the present activate the experience. Work up an appetite while engaging in a lively dialogue with Sandy Skoglund’s cheesy family matriarch, attempt to apply makeup in Isamu Noguchi’s black mirror, and sit down for dinner on Andrea Zittel’s drop-leaf table carpet—but try to avoid taking a nap on Donald Judd’s minimalist bed.

In the central playroom, activate artworks by Austrian artist Erwin Wurm, recently exhibiting in the Venice Biennale. Wurn’s interactive sculptures elicit amusement while provoking questions about objects of everyday life. Become part of the art by closely following the cartoon instructions found on Wurm’s sculptures—and have a friend photograph the living work of art that results!

Something to Say: The McNay Presents 100 Years of African American Art Through May 6, 2018

Pioneering collectors Harriet and Harmon Kelley paved the way for the collection of African American art by museums and private individuals across San Antonio, Texas, and the United States. Some-

thing to Say: The McNay Presents 100 Years of African American Art illustrates the Kelley Collection’s impact on our cultural landscape by juxtaposing works from their renowned holdings with loans from the burgeoning collections of African American art of Guillermo Nicolas/ Jim Foster and the McNay Art Museum.

Something to Say is the first survey of modern and contemporary African American art to be presented at the McNay.

Benny Andrews: Sexism Through May 6, 2018 Between 1970 and 1975, Benny Andrews created six monumental paintings as part of his Bicentennial series in response to official United State Bicentennial plans to be carried out in 1976. The artist feared that African Americans and their contributions to American history would be defined by slavery or omitted from the narrative completely. The McNay presents the fourth work in the series, Sexism, 1973, wherein Andrews, inspired by his involvement with feminist groups and activists, explores similar oppressions of women. The work is humorous, surreal, provocative, and complex in its contemplation of the distribution of power among genders.

Cities on Parade: 300 Years of European Festival Books Through June 10, 2018 Rare books invite comparisons between the festivals of today and those organized by the Medici, Bourbons, Habsburgs, and other courts of Europe.

In Argonautica, Florentine aristocrats competed on the Arno River in a quest for the mythical Golden Fleece. In The Pleasures of the Enchanted Island, staged at Louis XIV’s Versailles, fireworks exploded the spell a sorceress cast on a hero.

McNay’s collection of festival books is one of the most important in the United States.
