A PUBLICATION IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
Chairman’s CORNER One of the things that I believe makes this community so special is the incredible generosity of our people to share their time, talent and resources. Many continue to bless our community in so many ways, even after they have gone, through the establishment of endowments and charitable foundations. I think about my former boss, Neil Griffin, whose foundation has funded so many college scholarships for our kids and the Peterson and Cailloux Foundations that have made such incredible contributions to our community. Though we may not all have the resources of these foundations, all of us can make a positive contribution to the community. I am incredibly thankful to be able to work with a great group of community champions on our Chamber Board of Directors. Individually, they are some of the most active and giving volunteers in the entire area. You all would be quite impressed to see the list of organizations they support outside of the chamber. I see them all over town, in a variety of capacities, serving and making Kerrville and the surrounding area a better place. They set a wonderful example for all of us. Last month, I attended a board meeting of the Kerr County United Way, whose mission is to provide financial support to a variety of hardworking agencies throughout our community and beyond. Many of the board members were the same ones I see at chamber board meetings, Rotary Club of Kerrville meetings, Leadership Kerr County events or any number of other equally significant organizations. Is there something wrong with that? Well no, not really. These people are truly engaged in the community, and that’s great. My point is that we could do so much more and be so much stronger if more people engaged, volunteered and shared their time, talent and resources. Inside this month’s issue of BusinessLink, you can read about volunteer opportunities with some of our community’s top nonprofit organizations that are chamber members. Please take time to read about volunteer opportunities with these fine organizations. They all do great things and are worthy of our support. Winston Churchill once said, “We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.”

Making a difference in the community By Chelsea M.K. Stack
St. Peter’s Episcopal Church and School St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 320 St. Peter St., dates back to 1881 when it held its first service in the Kerr County Courthouse. In 1888, St. Peter’s became the first denominational church built in Kerrville on land donated by Capt. Joseph A. Tivy, and is still there today. “Our church has great traditions, rooted in early church history, yet we have both feet in the 21st century,” said David Martin, member of St. Peter’s for more than 20 years. The present congregation consists of 972 active, baptized members. The church’s tradition is a blending of evangelical and catholic Christianity where each practice enriches and fulfills the other. Its mission statement is: We exist to honor and glorify God by focusing our energies on reaching out to our community, teaching the love and truth of the Bible, and sending as many as we can out into the world with the good news of forgiveness and life through Jesus Christ. “As a member of the chamber, St. Peter’s is better able to spread the message that we are here to serve the community and satisfy the needs of the people of Kerrville and Kerr County. Our mission statement … is more easily fulfilled by the exposure we gain by being a part of the chamber,” said Barbara Dordova, senior warden of St. Peter’s. “We support many of the important charities in Kerrville, as well as foreign missions around the world. …

St. Peter’s and the Diocese of West Texas built a Habitat for Humanity House in 2016-17. One of our parishioners, Lee Underwood, has installed more than 100 HVAC units in Habitat for Humanity builds.” St. Peter’s views sacred music as an integral part of worship. “Our music program is expanding and always exciting with the praise and worship group at the family service, the chancel choir at the traditional service, and our fun and growing youth choir always ready for special performances,” Dordova said. The church has many groups that help with its vision, including study groups, an accounting group, age and genderspecific groups, a library guild, prayer groups and a book club. St. Peter’s Episcopal School, 321 St. Peter St., was opened in 1969, and currently has 138 students in grades preschool through kindergarten. The school is a National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited, Christian-based school, which offers young children personal growth in the safest, most nurturing environment outside of the home. “The chamber allows St. Peter’s and our outreach efforts to be known in the Kerrville community. We have a wonderful NAEYC-accredited preschool and kindergarten, which we are able to publicize through our chamber membership,” Dordova said. Its preschool program, which runs from 8:30 a.m. to

“We saw an unmet need going back to the 1990s, when Granger, my father, went around Texas and saw that there was a need and (tried) to figure out a way to fill that gap. … We serve a wide variety of clients affordable, conventional and 55-plus communities, as well,” said Justin MacDonald.
“St. Peter’s has a great day school and kindergarten (program) that are well-respected and provide a great foundation in education and faith for the kids at an early age,” Martin said.
In the late 1940s, the growth of Austin and the Texas Hill Country demanded a new level of homebuilding and, after growing up on construction sites, Granger MacDonald began leading the business. In 1993, the company developed its first multi-family community. By the early 2000s, it became one of the nation’s leading homebuilders specializing in multi-family developments in suburban, rural and sub-rural communities throughout Texas. Today, it has 5,700 units in 48 communities in 25 Texas cities.
Other services available include after-school care, early bird program, kid’s day out and gymnastics. “Additionally, our chamber membership has allowed us to introduce people new to Kerrville to our warm, friendly, Christian community,” Dordova said. “The upcoming Chamber Mixer is a great example of how our church and the services we offer can be introduced to those that may not be familiar with it,” Martin said. For more information on St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, visit stpeterskerrville.com, email office@stpeterskerrville.com or call 257-8162 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 9 a.m. to noon Fridays. MacDonald Companies MacDonald Companies, 2951 Fall Creek Road, is a familyowned group of companies specializing in developing, building and managing multi-family neighborhoods across Texas. The company is led by CEO Granger MacDonald, a second-generation builder, and his son, President and COO Justin MacDonald, a third-generation builder. The company focuses on rural and small metro areas to provide affordable housing for communities in need, building with sustainability, quality and comfort in mind.
“The thing that makes me most proud of our business is we’re able to provide a place to call home to about 10,000 people throughout Texas. We provide jobs to more than 150 people statewide and a third are in Kerr County,” Justin MacDonald said. “(The chamber) provides exposure to the community. It provides networking opportunities for professionals that are essential for our business, such as lenders, engineers and attorneys,” said Steve Schulte, general council of the MacDonald Companies. Multi-family housing developments the company has built in the area include Heritage Oaks Apartments in Kerrville, Comfort Place Apartments in Comfort, Oaks of Bandera in Bandera and Rolling Hills Townhomes in Fredericksburg. When asked which chamber benefits the business enjoys the most, Justin MacDonald said, “Networking, information and awareness on various things being done with local and state government;” while Schulte appreciated the “updates on economy and government activity, and the Economic Summit.” For more information, call 257-5323 or visit macdonaldcompanies.com.

Get to Know Volunteer Spotlight
Q&A with Nancy Foster Q: What is your volunteer role with the chamber, and how long have you served in that role?
A: I am in my second year serving on the communications committee, which meets
monthly to plan upcoming chamber CoffeeTalks, seminars and BusinessLink magazines, all with the intent of serving chamber members. I also have participated in the membership drive.
Q: What other organizations do you volunteer with? A: One of my favorite volunteer efforts is being a water sampler for
UGRA for 10 weeks each summer. It is very rewarding to play a small part in ensuring the water quality of the Guadalupe River.
Q: How has volunteering impacted or changed your life? A: You meet the nicest people. This community is filled with dedicated, caring people who want nothing more than to see Kerrville flourish, to support the many nonprofits that provide needed services and who work well together to ensure a positive environment to live, work and play.
Q: How is volunteering both
rewarding and challenging for you?
A: Most rewarding is helping nonprofits that rarely have enough staff or dollars to reach all their goals. The most challenging is finding time.
Q: What inspired you to start volunteering?
A: Many seasonal or ongoing
volunteering opportunities are listed in The Kerrville Daily Times. It’s easy to find something that suits your particular interests.
Q: In what ways has the chamber
been a resource for you as a volunteer or getting involved in community service?
A: I have great admiration for the current
administration of this chamber. They encourage members to become involved, no matter how large or small their business, and make everyone feel valued. Their visionary approach to community betterment is one reason every business should become a member.
Q: When not volunteering, where do you work or spend your time?
A: My husband, Raymond, and I love to explore the Hill
Country, our home for the past four years. My company, Foster Tourism Marketing, handles marketing initiatives for hospitality clients in Florida, Nevada and Texas. Locally, I’m involved with the Museum of Western Art, Kerrville Festival of the Arts and several others, as well as have written articles in several publications of The Kerrville Daily Times.

The Rewards of
Volunteering 5 local nonprofit chamber members look for helping hands By Nancy Foster
They give of their time, talent and expertise. They deliver meals to the elderly, mentor youth, serve on boards, plan fundraisers and so much more. They give because they want to, not because they have to. A recent Kerrville Daily Times’ reader poll on volunteering affirmed this. Responders view their efforts as a fulfilling and worthy way to give back, as well as use their skills and acquire new ones. We see Kerr County residents as being among the most giving individuals on the planet. Since April is National Volunteer Month, it is our pleasure to spotlight four nonprofit chamber members that benefit greatly from volunteer efforts. We also salute all of those whose volunteer efforts mean so much.

Striegler’s Hoof Haven If you’re an equine enthusiast, this rescue organization may just be the perfect fit for you. “We have a great passion for helping horses in need,” said Secretary/Treasurer Beckie Striegler, who runs Striegler’s Hoof Haven with her husband and in-laws. “We’re in need of volunteers and donations to help us grow and succeed.” The Strieglers began their nonprofit four years ago in McCamey and, to date, have succeeded at rescuing 100 horses. At press time, they had nine horses under their care on 16 leased acres at 75 Creekridge Trail in Mountain Home. Volunteer needs vary, but include assistance with grooming, exercising, mucking stalls and general interaction with the horses. Beckie is grateful to the chamber for “helping us in hosting our ribbon-cutting event, spreading the word on our programs and being included in this magazine. We look forward to a long and prosperous relationship with the chamber and its members.” For more information, call 432-940-2730 or visit strieglershoofhaven.org.
Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly The legendary Presbyterian Mo-Ranch Assembly, 2229 FM 1340 in Hunt, has many volunteer opportunities, especially during the months of October through May when preparation for the camp’s reopening kicks into high gear. “The ranch always has some activity or event going on,” said Allison Bueche, vice president of marketing and communications. Volunteers are often tasked with projects to suit their interests. Outdoor enthusiasts may enjoy gardening, landscaping, cedar clearing and hiking trail development, while inside opportunities include bookstore clerk, administrative assistance and inventorying memorial markers. Cover story Volunteering “We welcome our volunteers to share their talents and time, and we will share a wonderful place they can ‘unplug’ and enjoy God’s beautiful creation,” Bueche said. Mo-Ranch sees the chamber as a connecting organization. “We find incredible value through our membership as they help us increase the community’s awareness of who we are and how they can help our ministry,” Bueche said. For more information, call 800-460-4401, ext. 229 or visit moranch.org.
Peterson Health Judy Jones, volunteer coordinator at Peterson Health, loves to heap praise on its 90-plus volunteers, some of who have been recognized for 20 or 25 years of service. “Our volunteers are gems. They help us achieve our mission of exceptional, compassionate patient-centered care, and every one of them loves giving back to the community,” Jones said. At the 551 Hill Country Drive location, its present need is for people to commit to four-hour shifts and work in areas, such as pre-admission, information desk and gift shop. Another need is for volunteer chaplains. The medical center also reaches out to student volunteers through an eight-week summer Junior Volunteer Program offered to students from Our Lady of the Hills Regional Catholic, Tivy and Ingram Tom Moore high schools. “Peterson Health connects its organization leaders with the chamber by volunteering to serve throughout the community where needed,” said Lisa Winters, director of marketing and communications at Peterson Health. “Our Peterson Health leaders serve on the chamber board, on various chamber committees, in Leadership Kerr County, as ambassadors helping to welcome new members and businesses, coordinate shred day, help with special events and by taking the time to network throughout the
1
year. Peterson Health has one of the largest volunteer bases for the chamber and the relationship is mutually beneficial for all.” For more information, call 896-4200 or visit petersonhealth.com.
Texas Lions Camp Since 1949, the Texas Lions Camp has been hosting children with physical disabilities, Type 1 diabetes and cancer for a no-cost summer camp experience on their 500-acre Kerrville campus at 4100 San Antonio Highway. Trish Wilson, Texas Lions Camp director of public relations and marketing, said many church, service or community groups find the camp an ideal service project, as do families and individuals. Wilson extols the merits of volunteering. “Texas Lions Camp provides heart-warming smiles for our volunteers, who are providing life-changing moments for our campers. Our philosophy is ‘can do’. Our kids ‘can do’ because of all you do,” she said. Volunteer needs for spring and summer include help with landscaping, painting and organizing; cooking and serving at outdoor picnics; and manning the refreshment stand. Wilson sang the praises of the KACOC. “They help us spread our information and allows local businesses to help find more children who can benefit from the programs TLC offers,” Wilson said. For more information, call 896-8500 or visit lionscamp.com.
Hill Country Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities Centers This publicly funded, nonprofit organization began in 1997 and is charged with being the public provider for mental health and developmental disability services for 19 counties in the Hill Country. The MHDD Special Opportunity Center in Kerrville is located at 200 S. Lemos St. The need for volunteers to complement its 500 employees is ongoing, said Mark Paddock, area director of MHDD’s Special Opportunity Center for adults with intellectual and development disabilities. Additional volunteer needs include assistants to the master gardeners in their client garden, as well as help with setup, serving and calling out numbers at its monthly pizza and bingo party. Paddock sang the praises of the Special Opportunity Center’s volunteer board of directors and their commitment to the operation’s success, seeing first-hand the benefits of volunteering. “Our volunteers are able to meet and make friends with people they won’t necessarily meet in the community. Their involvement

also gives our clients the opportunity to make lifelong friends,” he said. As for the chamber providing assistance, he said, “The Kerrville (Area) Chamber of Commerce has been helpful to us in obtaining volunteers by putting our name and the services provided out there for residents and newcomers to see.” For more information, call 896-4604 or visit hillcountry.org. 1. Leadership & education Leadership Kerr County
Q: Where in the world was LKC in March? A: Traveling to Austin for Legislative Day
Photos by Michael Anglin/ARTIFEX42
By Lisa G. Winters The 22 members of the Leadership Kerr County class No. 33 traveled via charter bus to Austin for Legislative Day in March. The outing was organized by Steering Committee Member Justin Foster and supported by the generous assistance of Representative Andrew Murr’s Chief of Staff Regan Ellmer and District Director Kellie Early. Arriving on the south lawn, the class enjoyed a guided tour, given the rare opportunity to go behind the velvet rope inside the Senate chambers. Standing on the Senate floor for photos, the group was then ushered by Travis Richmond, Chief of Staff for Senator Dawn Buckingham, to the historic Betty King Committee Room for a presentation by Keith Ingram, Division Director of the Elections State Office. Ingram shared an overview of voter registration statistics in Texas, incidents of voter fraud and levels of election security, all interesting and timely to the class in this election year. Transitioning to presentations at the Supreme Court Courtroom, the class took a rare route from the Capitol, via underground tunnels, to meet Presiding Judge of State Court of Criminal Appeals Sharon Keller and David Slayton, administrative director of the Office of Court Administration.

While at lunch, sponsored by Community First National Bank, the class was joined by a representative from the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts and Travis Richmond. The day concluded at the Texas General Land Office Archive. Here, the class spent time in the map vault, studying original maps dating back to the 1800s, as well as reviewing letters, land grants and a draft of the Texas Constitution written by historic Texas figures, such as Stephen F. Austin, Davy Crockett and James Bowie. It was a historic day filled with many “firsts” for the class, as well as new and unique presentations and opportunities for the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce delegates. The LKC class will complete Travel and Tourism Day in April and Healthcare Day in May before graduating.
About LKC The Leadership Kerr County program is offered through the Kerrville Area Chamber of Commerce. LKC class members grow as leaders and learn what Kerr County is really all about during their monthly classes every third Tuesday. CoffeeTalks
March CoffeeTalk in review By Neice Bell A packed house was on hand to listen to Jane Lehman of LegalShield talk about how vulnerable people are today when it comes to personal identity theft, credit card theft and security. Lots of questions came from the audience after the talk and everyone walked away more educated.
Because of their generosity and support, we were able to continue to educate and serve our membership and community about shared opportunities, issues and challenges.
