Preparing for Baby Season in an Urban Setting Aleida Fuentes Boles, Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation, Inc.
Beginning in late winter and going through early fall; Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation (WRR) takes in thousands of orphaned, injured and displaced native wild animal babies. Because urban sprawl is on the rise more wild animals are losing their homes and the babies are the most vulnerable as when trees are cut down and dens are excavated, they cannot flee to safety. How can you help? Do not disturb or destroy trees, bushes or underbrush during the spring and summer months. Leave bird and squirrel nests alone until the resident babies have had time to grow large enough to leave and follow their mother or parents out into the world. Never live trap any animal. You are only risking taking a nursing mother away from her hungry babies and you will invite more of the same species to your neighborhood once the trapped animal is removed. WRR receives thousands of calls every year seeking the removal and relocation of a wild animal from a residential area. WRR does not do or condone this practice because: • You are almost sure to separate family members. • Certain times of the year, you will be taking nursing mothers away from babies who will then certainly starve to death. • In removing the resident wild animals you are creating vacancies for others to move in. • Live trapping is never the answer, we have humane repelling techniques we are happy to send you. Please, if you are considering live trapping and relocating an animal for your convenience, reconsider. Contact WRR’s 24-hour hotline at (830) 336-2725, where one of our trained staff will coach you on ways to harmoniously coexist with wild animals living in your urban area.

Wild animals are NOT a “nuisance.” Tragically, it has become a normality to view animals such as skunks, opossums and raccoons as a nuisance when they are cohabitants near our homes. The fact of the matter is that we are the interlopers. We moved into their homes when we built up our neighborhoods. The land we live on was theirs far before it was ours, and once we learn this we will do better to live harmoniously with the wildlife around us. If you want to help us provide care for the little ones who need help you can contribute to WRR. Visit our online wish list that includes many of the necessities needed as the number of orphaned babies we receive continues to grow. Find shipping/drop-off information at the link below as well. Six Steps to an Irrigation Design Rebate By Nathan Riggs, SAWS Conservation
If you’ve been considering making some changes to your home irrigation system, or even permanently getting rid of it, now is the time to tackle it before summer temperatures divert enthusiasm away from outdoor activities and more toward air conditioning. The Irrigation Design Rebate program is available to homeowners and business owners. There are a few very important facets to remember along the way. Home or business owners interested in the irrigation rebate MUST call or email SAWS Conservation to schedule a free consultation BEFORE any irrigation system changes or upgrades are made. *Any irrigation work initiated before the first consultation will not be considered for the rebate.* Here’s how it works: 1. Call SAWS Conservation at 704-SAVE (7283) or email us to set up a free irrigation consultation. 2. A SAWS Conservation Consultant will come to your home and inspect the irrigation system to record the settings and then briefly test the system to collect information on the system’s average water flow rate, maintenance issues and number of separate zones laid out across the landscape. The consultant will talk with you about the inspection results and discuss any questions or plans you have for the system or landscape. 3. The consultant will provide you with a personalized written rebate offer that’s good for 12 months from the date of the consultation based on the average water flow and number of zones in the irrigation system. The offer contains: a. The maximum rebate amount available for permanently retiring the functional or nonfunctional irrigation system. b. The maximum rebate amount for making

targeted changes to the irrigation system. Targeted changes include capping entire sprinkler zones, converting entire spray irrigation zones to drip irrigation (landscape beds only) or converting all conventional spray irrigation heads in a zone to pressure-reducing spray heads (grass zones only). The maximum rebate for making targeted changes is limited to 75 percent of the amount to completely retire the functional irrigation system. 4. You have 12 months from the date of your first consult to make any changes to the irrigation system and call SAWS to schedule and complete a final rebate inspection. The consultant will inspect and confirm all changes you’ve made. BONUS: If you complete the rebate work to your system and finish your final inspection within 90 days of that initial consultation, you’ll get a 10 percent bonus added to the total rebate! 5. The consultant returns the final inspection paperwork to SAWS and the homeowner will receive an email within 48 hours confirming their final rebate amount (including the 10 percent bonus, if qualified). 6. Rebates will be issued as a check mailed directly to the homeowner within two to eight weeks after the rebate is approved. Only homeowners are eligible for the rebate; tenants are not eligible. Customized rebate amounts start at $450 for permanently retiring a non-functional irrigation system and could possibly exceed $2,000 (amount varies based on water flow and zones) for retiring a functional irrigation system. Based on system water flow, rebates (amounts vary based on water flow) for retiring individual zones start at $200 per zone, while rebates for converting spray to drip irrigation (landscape beds only) start at $100 per zone. Rebates for converting regular spray heads to pressurereducing spray heads (grass zones only) start at $50 per zone and increase based on water flow of the system. Remember: ANY irrigation system work started before the initial consult WILL NOT be considered as part of the calculations to arrive at the rebate offer. Call or email us BEFORE starting any work.

lots of great resources out there and the Watersaver Landscape Tour is one of the best ways to learn about them.” You can visit www.GardeningVolunteers.org/yard-tours/ to learn more about the tour.
Watersaver Landscape Tour Scheduled for April 7
Mark your calendar for one of San Antonio’s favorite spring events Have you ever driven by a home and thought, “Wow, that’s how I want our yard to look.” Well, the Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGR), Gardening Volunteers of South Texas, San Antonio Water System and San Antonio River Authority are teaming up in April to give you an opportunity to see some of San Antonio’s most colorful, well-planned and water saving landscapes. If you love your landscape, this is a tour you won’t want to miss. “We are really looking forward to Saturday, April 7, as we will be helping host this year’s Watersaver Landscape Tour,” said George Wissmann, TGR general manager. “This is one of San Antonio’s favorite events and we’re pleased to not only be a part of it, but we’re bringing a great new incentive for tour attendees as well.” This year, the first 200 people who visit all six featured homes will receive a $50 coupon to Stone and Soil or Milberger’s Nursery. There will be a special punch card and maps printed up for the day to help guide and motivate attendees.
Start Spring Landscape with Irrigation System Audit from SAWS There is some sunshine at the end of the past month of dreary weather, and that always inspires homeowners to start thinking about their yards. The first item on that landscape to do list should be to get a free irrigation system audit. The Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District (TGR) and San Antonio Water System (SAWS) are continuing their irrigation consultation, and not only will SAWS experts come out to your home to conduct the audit for free, the TGR District will provide a $50 coupon (for those living in the TGR District) which can be redeemed for landscape materials and low-wateruse plant materials. Coupons will be only issued to the first 500 residents who take advantage of this limited offer. See program guidelines and sign up today! www.trinityglenrose.com/ landscape
The tour focuses on landscapes designed for low maintenance water use with limited irrigation, native plants, colorful drought-tough perennials and reduced lawn spaces. Each home featured in the tour has a unique landscape with spectacular style and design.

“Every one of these featured homes will offer simple ideas that can be used in any South Texas yard and by homeowners themselves,” Wissmann noted. “What we’ve found is that a great landscape is very attainable when homeowners do a little bit at a time. There are

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
