T

he Lone Star State can trace its origins to Brazoria County. “Father of Texas” Stephen F. Austin chose the area as the site to settle the “Old Three Hundred” colony in the summer and early fall of 1821. The area first was populated by 89 of Austin’s settlers, who had land grants in present day Brazoria County by 1824. Prior to its colonization, the region was occupied by Karankawa Indians. Spanish explorer Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca visited the area, followed by the French in 1528. The Spanish began occupying Texas in the 18th Century, and came to the area to trade with Indians as well as search for stolen horses, according to the Handbook of Texas. Brazoria County is located on the prairie of the Gulf Coast, and sits on the mouth of the Brazos River. It covers 1,407 square miles, and is 146 feet above sea level at its highest point in Damon Mound. The county’s cotton farms produced more than 5,000 bales annually as early as the mid-1830s, and

plantation owners in the area were some of the wealthiest in Texas. Brazoria County had 1,623 white inhabitants and 3,013 slaves by 1847. Between 1870 and 1880, the county’s population grew from 7,527 to 9,774, largely due to the arrival of federal soldiers and other Northerners, foreign immigrants, and Confederate soldiers from Texas and the Old South. The manufacturing industry took over as Dow Chemical Co. in 1939 came to Brazoria County. The county remains largely agricultural with farmers growing crops such as rice, corn and hay, and although it is still largely agricultural, Brazoria County has developed a strong industrial base. The population grew in the 1950s as a result of a second phase of industrialization. Currently, the area is experiencing another population boom as a result of industrial expansions from companies including Dow, BASF, Freeport LNG and Phillips 66. Brazoria County’s population grew from 27,069 in 1940 to 46, 413 in 1950. The county’s population was 313,166 in 2010, and was estimated at 346,312 in 2015.

lvin’s first settlers arrived in the 1860s after a flag station was established near the head of Mustang Slough. It is named for Alvin Morgan, hired by the rail company to oversee loadings from the rail cars. By 1896, Alvin had an estimated population of 2,000 and several businesses, including an ice factory, a pickle works, a cotton gin, a bank, an opera house, six hotels and two weekly newspapers. Rice became a major agricultural commodity in the early 1930s, and oil was discovered. Alvin is the hometown of baseball hall of fame pitcher Nolan Ryan, dozens of antique shops, Shimek Gardens and exotic animals at Bayou Wildlife Park. Also popular is the Froberg Farm’s open-air market. Depot Market Days take place the third Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alvin Train Depot.

ngleton was founded in 1890 by Leis R. Bryan Sr. and Faustino Kiber near the geographical center of Brazoria County and named for Mrs. George Angle, wife of the general manager of the Velasco Terminal Railway. Angleton was chosen as the new seat of Brazoria County in 1896 following a bitter political battle. Angleton schools began operation in 1897, and a college, the University of South Texas, operated briefly at Angleton, but closed after its buildings were destroyed in the 1900 storm. Incorporated Nov. 12, 1912, the city’s population was 19,491 as of 2016. Angleton has become known for its special events. J

ohn Austin, a close friend and distant cousin of Stephen F. Austin, founded the town in 1828, though it was Stephen F. Austin who named it Brazoria because he said, “I know of none like it in the world.” By the 1830s, most of the business of Texas was conducted through the town, and it was the center of discontent with the New Mexican Constitution and tariffs. This would lead to the Texas Revolution. The men who defended Fort Velasco in the Battle of Velasco were Brazorians who, on their way to attack Fort Anahuac, attacked Fort Velasco when the colonel denied their schooner permission to pass. The town began to decline when the railroad bypassed it and was superseded by Angleton in 1896. Its motto “Home of the Masonic Oak” comes from six Freemasons, among them Dr. Anson Jones, the last president of the Republic of Texas, meeting in secret under a giant oak tree on John Austin’s property in 1835 to organize what was the first Masonic lodge in Texas. The oak still stands and can be seen from Masonic Oak Park. Today the city at FM 521 and Highway 36, is home to the No Name Festival each June and Brazoria Heritage Day, featuring an oldfashioned cattle drive each March. Brazoria had a population of 3,071 in 2016.

CITY OFLAKE JACKSON

I

n 2018, Lake Jackson turns 75 years old. To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee, an energetic group of citizens formed a 75th anniversary committee and have planned a host of events to celebrate this important milestone. The first spade of dirt to build Lake Jackson was turned on Dec. 8, 1941, one day after the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor. Dow Chemical was building its first plant along the Texas Gulf Coast down near Velasco and Freeport — what today is Dow Plant A. Dow needed housing for the contractors building the plant and then for those employees who would operate the plant. The old Lake Jackson Plantation site was chosen and the city was carefully carved out of the Spanish mossdraped forest. This was no slash-and-burn operation. Alden Dow was a student of famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Dow developed a master plan for the creation and development of Lake Jackson. Lake Jackson became one of only a handful of privately developed master-planned cities/communities in the United States. Dow not only employed the mid-century modern design techniques of Wright, but also took special care to preserve as much of the forest as possible. Streets were

designed around many of the massive oaks and lots of green space/parks were incorporated into the design of the city. The first families moved into the city in early 1943, so April 1943 has been the unofficial date of the city’s “birth”. For 75 years, the city has followed the master plan developed by Alden Dow. And, every 20 years or so a new master plan is developed to build on the results of the previous master plan. The most recent master plan was adopted in 2016 and has set the city’s path for the next 20 years. So, Happy Birthday Lake Jackson — here is to 75 more years for the beautiful City of Enchantment.

earland, situated south of Houston on Highway 288, has been the center of heavy commercial and population growth for several years. Overlapping into Harris and Fort Bend counties, the majority of it is in Brazoria County. The county’s largest city was created when a railroad branch opened from Alvin to Houston in 1882 and established an auxiliary track for storage. In November 1893, Polish nobleman Capt. Wilhelm Zychlinski fell in love with the abundance of flowering pear trees and named it Pearland. Pearland’s population was 400 in 1914 and has since benefited from the explosion of Houston’s population bringing Pearland’s total population to 91,252 in 2010. It topped 100,000 by 2013, and stood at 113,570 in 2016. There are excellent options for shopping in Pearland, including an open-air lifestyle mall called Pearland Town Center. With more than 140 dining choices and more opening almost daily, there are plenty of options. Pearland is home to the acclaimed Killen’s Steakhouse and Killen’s Barbeque. Central Texas Style BBQ has served hickory-smoked meats with homemade sides and desserts for over 40 years. Enjoy live music by local artists on weekends in lots of places. SURFSIDEBEACH

T

he village of Surfside Beach has roots that date back to 1528 when the Narvaez expedition, a party looking Montezuma’s gold, noticed a current of muddy water flowing into the Gulf of Mexico. They called it Los Brazos de Dios, which settlers named the Brazos River. Almost 300 years later, in 1821, Stephen F. Austin landed on Surfside Beach with his first colonists. More than 25,000 colonists would enter Texas through this port. It was the area where the war for Texas Independence began with the Battle of Velasco in 1832 and ended with Mexican leader Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna signing the Treaties of Velasco four years later. After the Texas Revolution, Surfside Beach served as a summer resort for wealthy plantation families. Today it still is a popular summertime beach spot. Surfside has numerous restaurants, shops that cater to beach-goers, a jetty that extends 1 mile into the Gulf of Mexico and provides excellent access for fishermen.

OTHERCOMMUNITIES BAILEY’S PRAIRIE Bailey’s Prairie is named for James Britton “Brit” Bailey who settled there with his family in 1818. When Stephen F. Austin arrived with his land grants from Mexico and 300 families, Brit Bailey would not surrender his land and eventually received a league of land on the east bank of the Brazos River. Although his gravesite is not marked, his life in commemorated on a historic marker at the Munson Cemetery on Highway 35 in Bailey’s Prairie. The village is home to one the county’s greatest ghost stories. It is said Bailey haunts Highway 35, appearing as a bouncing white ball of light floating about four to six feet off the ground. Many claim to have seen this phenomenon known as “Bailey’s Light,” but no one knows its cause. The light has been known to “chase” vehicles traveling on the highway. Incorporated in 1967, Bailey’s Prairie encompasses 8 square miles and had 773 residents in 2016.

BONNEY Located 6 miles northwest of Angleton off FM 521, the village of Bonney was established in 1873 by the International-Great Northern Railroad and named for a conductor on the Columbia Tap Railroad. After a post office was constructed in the village in 1889, a general store opened the following year. A school, along with three more businesses were established during the next six years. Today, Bonney retains its small-town feel and rents out a community center and pavilion for family gatherings. It reported a population of 346 by 2016.

OTHERCOMMUNITIES QUINTANA

OLD OCEAN Old Ocean formerly was known as Chance’s Prairie, named after the land grant made to Joseph H. Polley and Samuel Chance in 1824. Old Ocean is at Highwy 35 and FM 524. James “Jim” Abercrombie discovered oil nearby in 1934, and a government oil refinery was constructed to make high-octane gas. The oilfield was named Old Ocean, which became the community’s name by 1936. The population was reported to be 915 in the 1970s, but has fallen in recent years to 150, according to the 2010 census.

OYSTER CREEK Settled by Sam Hudgins and other cattlemen, Oyster Creek later developed into cotton and sugar plantations. Growth of the community between 1890 and 1894 is credited to two brothers known only by the surname Horn. The brothers formed a promotion company, offering a bonus lot in Velasco with the purchase of five prairie lots in Oyster Creek. The city is a quiet, small community with parks, but is known for its strong fishing. Oyster Creek winds through the area, providing good access to bays. In 2016, the population was 1,126.

The island of Quintana has been a community since 1532. Believed to have been named by Mexican Gen. Andres Quintana, it was described in the later 1830s as a place of “shanties and a mixed population of Yankees, Mexicans and Indians.” Other accounts mention a hotel, pavilion, pool and dance halls. In antebellum Texas, Quintana was a favorite vacation spot for plantation families. Varied industries have come and gone, including a cattle hide and tallow operation, a pickled beef factory and the only shipyard west of New Orleans before the Civil War. The hurricane of 1900 virtually wiped the Brazoria County coastline clean, and most families in Quintana moved inland. Today, Quintana is a popular destination for beachgoers and is home to Freeport LNG, which is being transformed into a multibillion-dollar liquefied natural gas export facility. The town had a population of 68 in 2016.

ROSHARON Rosharon sits at the intersections of FM 521 and 1462 and is made primarily of several subdivisions and a few businesses. While most residents commute to work, four nearby units of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice employ many residents. Those units are Ramsey, Stringfellow, Terrell and Darrington. Rosharon was settled before the Civil War by cotton and sugar planters. The Handbook of Texas contains a story that Rosharon was also locally known as Buttermilk Station “because an early resident frequently brought a bucket of buttermilk and a dipper to the stop to treat the crew to a drink.” George Wetmore Colles bought property nearby in 1900, naming it the Rose of Sharon Garden Ranch because the Cherokee roses growing there. The community adopted the name, later shortening it to Rosharon. The population was listed as 1,152 in 2010. THE FACTS 2018 GUIDE TO BRAZORIA COUNTY • 31

OTHERCOMMUNITIES SANDY POINT At the entrance to Darrington State Prison Farm is Sandy Point, on Highway 288 in north central Brazoria County. It originally was a farming community and was incorporated as a town in 2002. As early as 1884, the community of 250 people shipped sugar, molasses and cotton and had two general stores, several sugar mills and cotton gins. Rice farms and cattle ranches eventually replaced the plantations. The city became the center of a land dispute with nearby Missouri City, which attempted to annex a 25-foot strip of the area. Residents voted to incorporate to fight the annexation. In 2000, the population was 30.
