WELCOME
Welcome to Wimberley Wimberley is a place to relax and recharge or spend time exploring and experiencing the creative nature of this off-thebeaten-path village known as “a little bit of heaven.” In the spring and summer there are plenty of activities and events to inspire and entertain. Stay a while and enjoy live theatre, live music, art galleries, unique shops, restaurants, charming B&Bs and country inns
and exciting events. For a small town, Wimberley offers more live theatre, art galleries and special events than many larger cities. Wimberley was designated a Texas Cultural District in 2015 for good reason. The Wimberley Players and the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens offer productions throughout the year. More than a dozen art galleries in and around the square represent talented local artists and internationally recognized talent. Live music can be heard in several restaurants and watering holes. Special events include EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens Butterfly Festival, Wimberley Arts Fest, Wimberley Wine Walk, Wimberley Garden Tour, 73rd Annual VFW Rodeo and the Independence Day Parade. Charming shops in Wimberley provide
a unique shopping experience year-round. On the first Saturday of the month, March through December, Market Days offers treasure hunters a whole day of shopping, live music and great food on 19 acres. Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy hiking the nature trails at Blue Hole Regional Park, Jacobs Well Natural Area and Patsy Glenn Refuge. Climbing the 218 steps to the top of Old Baldy provides sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding Texas Hill Country. Swimming in the beautiful, clear Cypress Creek is available
if reservations are made at Blue Hole or Jacobs Well. Wimberley Zipline Adventures offers thrilling rides with spectacular views. Wimberley - it’s a special place you’ll want to visit again and again. For more information please check our website at www.wimberley.org or call the Visitor Center at (512) 847-2201. We will be happy to help you find the perfect way to enjoy Wimberley. Happy Trails, Cathy Moreman Executive Director of the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce

Drop by the Visitor Center Once you’ve found Wimberley, you’ll understand why it’s called “a little bit of heaven.”
Once you’ve found Wimberley, you’ll understand why it’s called “a little bit of heaven.” There are no major highways running through town and being far away from the hustle and bustle of the big city is one of the reasons people love it here. Although Wimberley is very accessible to Austin and San Antonio and only three hours from Houston, it’s tucked away in the rolling hills of the beautiful Texas hill country. Cross the Blanco River and the beautiful Cypress Creek and you’ll understand that you have escaped for a while or for a lifetime. If you’re a first-timer or a life-timer, you are always invited to a warm welcome at the Wimberley Valley Visitor Center where generous and Texas-friendly volunteers will greet you with a smile. A wealth of information on places to see, things to do, where to eat and where to stay is available at the center. Drop by, rest in our beautiful art-filled lobby and chat with those who love to share their love of Wimberley. The Visitor Center located conveniently at 14100 Ranch Road 12, is open Monday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and on Sundays 1 to 4 p.m. The center is also
home to the Wimberley Valley Chamber of Commerce. Call us at (512) 847-2201 and visit www.wimberley.org for more information.

EAT The Junction Drinkery and Eatery
FOOD TRUCKS IN
WIMBERLEY Good food options are easy to find in Wimberley. From casual eat-n-go to elegant dining often accompanied by live music, there are plenty of places to go for good food. But the national food-truck craze has taken hold of the valley and now there are a plethora of places to try something new and unique in Wimberley. In the last year, the food truck, or similarly characterized businesses, have grown from just one in town to at least 10. The original Wimberley food truck was Creekside Cookers Barbecue, located at the Y Center near the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and FM 2325.
Creekside Cookers Barbecue Kelly Evers started Creekside after finding success on the Barbecue Cookoff circuit. He used his winnings to buy a first
class food truck, quit his full-time job as a teacher and opened up on Saturdays only. The demand for his slow-cooked meat was so great, he ended up opening for almost every day of the week. Get there quick though, the food truck is only open until they sell out of barbecue, which happens almost every day. “Having a food truck affords someone who can’t afford a brick and mortar store the opportunity,” Evers said. “Nine times out of 10, you are dealing with an owner when you walk up to a food truck. There are a lot of creative people out there who wanted a vehicle to express their culinary creativity.” And express his culinary creativity he did. Evers provides great brisket, turkey and sausage, but the most popular items on his menu are a variety of pulled pork sandwiches. “A lot of people come for our specialty sandwiches,” Evers said. “Our Big Kahuna has been featured in magazines. It is a pulled pork sandwich with an in-house Hawaiian sauce with a fresh jalapeno vinegar based slaw. Our other sandwich is the MoJo, which is sausage and pulled pork put together. We use

a homemade espresso BBQ sauce. Those are our two biggest sellers.” In the same parking lot as Creekside is Pho-Lisha’s Food Truck where creativity shines. Pho-Lisha’s is an Asian-Cajun hybrid blending together two places that have been influential in owner Alisha Spencer’s life. The staple offering is the Phoritto, which blends traditional Vietnamese Pho soup with a Texas style burrito. Traditional Vietnamese Pho is a soup containing shaved beef, rice noodles, sprouts, mint, basil, and cilantro served in piping-hot, seasoned beef bone broth. Pho-Lisha’s takes all of those fresh, delicious ingredients and wraps them in a soft flour tortilla, crisps it up on the grill and serves it with the seasoned broth in a cup for dipping. There is typically a Cajun food of the day such as red beans and rice, shrimp etoufee or jambalaya on the menu. “I like to take a dish that nobody in Wimberley can get here, because as great as our town is it is hard to find certain things,” Spencer said. “I listen to what people ask for and then go from there. You can’t be afraid to try something new, and that is the great thing about a food truck. You can whip something up and get feedback. If it doesn’t work you change it the next day.” The largest growth in the local food truck industry has come at Odie’s Place, directly across from the Wimberley Library on FM 2325. “We’ve got four food trucks and the Wimberley Shave Ice stand right now,” owner Allison Seideman said. “All of them offer a little something different. Gringa’s Grub Shack has hamburgers, fish tacos and more. Dripping Wings offers a variety of chicken wings. Ron Dooleys has sandwiches, tater
tots and fries. The newest trailer is Wimberley Subs and Salads. It offers some healthy options for food trucks with fresh subs and fresh salads.” The best part of Odie’s Place is that it can be a one stop food spot for the entire family. “This is a place to come and hang out and have enough choice options for everyone in the family,” Seideman said. “That has been the best part of it. The kiddos can come, and they can have a grilled cheese. Adults can get a burger or wings and everyone can finish it off with the shave ice. It offers a little bit of everything for everyone.” The newest food truck location in the Wimberley Valley is also aiming for a family-style atmosphere with a hard twist. The Junction Drinkery and Eatery is located at The Junction, which is the intersection of Ranch Road 12 and FM 32 on the way to San Marcos. Stop by and enjoy the shade under hundreds of oak trees and pick up a drink from the bar on site that focuses primarily on Texas craft beers with wine options available. There are also at least three food trucks: Nine Tacos, Enrico’s Blaze Wood Fired Pizza and Lean Green Veggie Machine with more potentially on the way. “We hope to become a locals place and a bigger part of the community where people can come with family and friends to relax and hang out with some good food and a drink,” Richard Montgomery, part owner of The Junction Drinkery and Eatery, said. “We have over 100 live oaks to hang out under the shade and watch the world go by. We also have live music and a playscape for the kiddos to run around and play on.” Overall, the food truck scene has made its way to town and those interested in good food are reaping the benefits.

WIMBERLEY
The Blanco River rolls through the Wimberley Valley as it ebbs and flows though the karstic features of the Texas Hill Country. The valley, lined with tree-covered hilltops, offers picturesque views around seemingly every curve of the old ranch roads that weave in and out of a quaint, small town. It’s not hard to see why people have been visiting Wimberley for decades. “Wimberley is a unique experience,” Belinda Smith, owner of BellaVida Bed
and Breakfast, said. “A lot of people come from Houston or Dallas, and they have not experienced the Hill Country and this kind of terrain. They enjoy what Wimberley has to offer in the way of shopping and arts. They enjoy the wineries, getting away from the big city and getting into a more relaxed atmosphere.” There are hundreds of options throughout the Wimberley Valley for people to stay that offer an exceptional experience for any type of accommodation.
BellaVida is a fiveroom bed and breakfast situated on eight acres on the northwestern edge of Wimberley. The main feature is the Great Room, which is 1,100 square feet and is perfect for family gatherings. “We also have a ping pong table and a flat screen TV in there, so it is the social hub,” Smith said. “I love it when we have multiple groups of people that are strangers staying with us and then you see them all in the Great Room in a ping pong

The custom built home has three bedrooms, each with a private bathroom, which harkens back to an earlier era yet provides 21st century amenities. “It is a cross between a farm house and a craftsman style,” Rosemary Lyday, owner of Alexandra’s House, said. “It has a porch that wraps three-fourths around it. It has a wonderful barn and a lovely kitchen. The décor is what I call relaxed sophistication. It is nice and elegant but not Victorian antique. It is a cross between cozy and comfy with nice antiques.” Both properties have wonderful outdoor areas with BellaVida’s trails through the woods being a popular attraction while Alexandra’s House has a beautiful pond on five acres. “People can hang out by the pond or sit on the porch and enjoy nature,” Lyday said. Beyond the natural Hill Country landscape, another reason people come to Wimberley is to spend time in the local river or creeks. There may be no better option than 7A Resort. 7A has a half-mile of Blanco River access with everything

from shallow wading areas to great places for jumping off the rope swings. They have also recently rebuilt the pool area that overlooks the river. With units that sleep anywhere from four people to 40, it is the perfect place for a family get away. “We are a family friendly destination,” Amanda Calaway, general manager of 7A Resort, said. “We have something for everyone. From the river access to the pool with a splash pad for kids
there are plenty of swimming options. We also have Pioneer Town, which is fun for all ages to explore. During the summer, we operate the ice cream parlor and have a pretty retro arcade and the Cowboy Museum.” 7A is located on Wayside Drive, just a minute or two from the Wimberley Square. Blockhaus Lodge is a newly renovated resort that is perfectly located directly across the street from the popular Wimberley Market
Days location, and minutes from the downtown. There are eight motel-style rooms, and two free standing houses on the property and a new swimming pool. The location makes it desirable for weekend shopping or quick trips through town. No matter what type of amenities or experience you are looking for, Wimberley has something to offer everyone.

WIMBERLEY
Wimberley has become a shopping destination with thousands of visitors each year flocking to the small town. From a waltz around the historic square to a stroll or slow roll along the roads of Wimberley, visitors will find a vast variety of shops and galleries that are locally owned. “You feel renewed visiting a small town and visiting with locals instead of a strip mall that is the same in every city,” Melynda Einhaus, owner of Shop the Tree House said. “Wimberley has that special small-town appeal that I think people miss a lot these days. It is nice to walk and meet the storeowners, touch the products and know that there is time put into the selection of items. There are stories behind the products people are buying.” The best thing about shopping in Wimberley is that almost every store is owned and staffed by local residents. It allows each owner to showcase their individual character through
the products they offer. “We spend a lot of time hand-selecting our items, doing quality checks and having enough stuff that you can’t just go order online,” Einhaus said. “We try and keep a lot of items that we consider to be special in the inventory.” Shop The Tree House, located just a short walk away from the Wimberley Square on Ranch Road 12, is known for furniture and home décor. Einhaus puts a lot of effort into finding unique items such as her handpicked Kantha blankets from India or home décor items that are created by Central Texas artists. At Star Antiques, owner Lisa Kiefer creates her own unique items. The store specializes in fine vintage lighting. Kiefer and her assistant Allison Waldron do the restoration themselves. “First we have to get out and hunt it up,” Kiefer said. “Most of the stuff we work on is from the 1920s and 30s. We bring it back, clean it up, do restoration work

on it and rewire it with new electrical components. You know all that has changed from the 20s and 30s to now.” Beyond the restoration work, Star Antiques, which is located on River Road just a quarter mile from Ranch Road 12, creates one-of-a-kind light fixtures. “I have one in the store right now that has a small chandelier that I have redone with crystals and an old bird cage on it,” Kiefer said. “I have another one that was a crazy big wire
coat hanger, and we have that with some Edison light bulbs hanging from it with old bed springs wrapped around the Edison bulbs.” There may be no more appropriate word to describe shopping in Wimberley than ‘unique,’ and there aren’t many small towns that have their own gourmet popcorn store. “We have about 65 different flavors of popcorn,” said Neal Johnson, owner of Papa Hoo’s Hill Country Popcorn on the Wimberley

Square. “From savory cheeses on up to caramels and candy coated sweet popcorns, we’ve got it all, and we love to give samples so you can find out exactly which one you like.” The Johnsons are representative of many of the local shop owners. They wanted to get away from the big city and raise their family in a small town. Wimberley was the right fit. “The shops are unique,” Johnson said. “They are not shops you are going to find in big cities. Everybody tries to specialize in what they handle. It is also a great place to spend time. The atmosphere of walking around in a little town is just great. If you are in a hurry you are in the wrong town. People can relax and do it at their leisure.” The highest density of local
shops is centered around the Wimberley Square with dozens of shops within walking distance down Ranch Road 12, Old Kyle Road and toward Cypress Creek in what is called The Quarter. But shopping opportunities can be found all over Wimberley. Star Antiques draws shoppers down River Road and past the new business locations in front of The Leaning Pear Restaurant. There are unique places like Wimberley Stitch Studio, also known as the Best Little Quilt Shop in the Hill Country, down FM 2325. Even the local hardware store gets in on the shopping action with Wimberley Ace having one of the largest gift and apparel areas in town. No matter what direction you head in Wimberley, you are certain to find a shop worth experiencing.

SQUARE: A shopping & social hub
Wimberley, although within 30 minutes of San Marcos or Austin has managed to keep its small-town atmosphere. There are many reasons to visit Wimberley, such as 7A Ranch and Pioneer Town, Blue Hole Regional Park, Jacob’s Well or the Lions Club Market Days. But a visit is not complete without a visit to the town center – the Wimberley Square. Since at least the 1870s
and Bob Moore’s Trading Post, long since vanished, the Wimberley Square has been the “center of town.” The historic town center has been maintained over the years with many of the original stone-faced buildings still bringing the unique charm to Wimberley. Although it has gone through many changes, the Square today is a very important part of town,

just like in the 1870’s. “Here in Wimberley, we have an unmatched and proven character, coupled with a tremendously maintained eclectic mixture of business,” Wimberley Mayor Mac McCullough said. “We offer the ultimate destination for a vibrant taste of a small Texas town not matched anywhere else in our great state.” Around 50 shops line the

streets of the Square, which expands beyond the simple geometric shape down Ranch Road 12 and Old Kyle Road and into The Quarter along Cypress Creek. There is something for everyone with stores for kitchen supplies, artifacts, linens, wine and beer, furniture and home furnishings, quaint clothing boutiques, coffee shops, art galleries and other one-of-a-kind finds. Beyond its destination as a shopping center, the Wimberley Square is also the social hub. While Cypress Creek Café, a local restaurant and bar located in one of the most historic buildings on the Wimberley Square, burned down in 2017, the area continues to attract the local flare. The Wimberley Café is the local diner for breakfast and lunch while Ino’z Brew and Chew offers a stop to wet your whistle. Marco’s Italian Food provides elegant nighttime dining. Whether it be day or night, there is always action in “downtown” Wimberley. But various guests arrive unexpectedly - a conservative politician, a fiery socialist, a near-sighted ingenue, a zany modern dancer - each with a long-held secret. When one of the guests is murdered, it's left to Bridgit, the feisty Irish maid with a macabre interest in homicide, to solve the crime. Death by Design is more than homage - it's a new classic. The Lion in Winter
By James Goldman Betrayal, treachery & a knife fight. Every family has its ups and downs! Nov 9 – Dec 2 Sibling rivalry, adultery, and dungeons – The Lion in Winter is a modern-day classic. Comedic in tone, dramatic in action – the play tells the story of the Plantagenet family, who are locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions to inherit a kingdom. The queen, and wealthiest woman
in the world, Eleanor of Aquitaine, has been kept in prison since raising an army against her husband, King Henry II. Let out only for holidays, the play centers around the inner conflicts of the royal family as they fight over both a kingdom and King Henry’s paramour during the Christmas of 1183. As Eleanor says, “Every family has its ups and downs,” and this royal family is no exception. Produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc.

WIMBERLEY: devoted to the arts
Susan Raine is a painter and sculptor who works with oil-based paints and a variety of sculptural mediums. Photos by Denise Cathey
Wimberley is a town truly devoted to the arts.Visitors to Wimberley can expect to encounter a vibrant and flourishing arts community, encompassing a wide range of subjects and styles from painting to woodworking. Five notable artisans evoke the uniqueness and creativity of the art to be found throughout the city. Located at Bent Tree Gallery, painter and sculptor Susan Raine has been a fixture in the Wimberley arts community for five years with her highly impressionistic paintings and sculptural forms. While Raine started painting only in the last decade, she has a long appreciation for art in all its forms going back to her own school days. Raine is skilled in clay, welding and other art forms however, she is known for her paintings of nature and animals. What separates Raine from other artists is her emphasis on motion both in the style of painting, with the layers of paint emphasizing her own movements in creating each piece, and the motion of her subjects. A horse thundering across an orange sky has bold swaths of black, purple and red that convey not only the dynamic movements of the horse but of the artist’s hand.
Works of seemingly stationary subjects, such as a seated cat perfectly poised, imply the subtler motions of stillness and the tension of an impending action. No matter what work of Raine you gravitate to, each provides the unique tastes and style that are distinctive of her work. But it’s the spirit of togetherness that makes Raines artistic calling in Wimberley unique. No matter which gallery or group she meets there is always a willingness to help each other and share their creativity that has nurtured and supported Raines’s work. “I’ve found my niche. I love the people in Wimberley,” Raine said. Bent Tree Gallery features Raine’s work and is located at 105 Henson Rd Wimberley, Texas and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Another artist whose work is featured at Bent Tree Gallery, is Alyssa Surabian who combines pyrography with watercolor and acrylic paints to create unique paintings, with elements of minimalism and abstraction. Surabian, a Wimberley resident for three years, works out of a small studio in a copse of trees in the hills surrounding Wimberley. With her move to the town, Surabian began to combine

her two artistic disciplines, painting and wood burning, to create works that evoke memories for herself and her viewers. “I like to recreate these memories I have of my childhood or of places I have visited, just sort of really meaningful things I have done,” said Surabian. Surabian prefers to use wood as her canvas due to the patterns and stories she finds hidden in the grain, providing her a starting point as she plays with layering paint and texture of the burned wood to create a scene or

PLAY Lilli Pell mood. Her biggest inspiration is found in the area in which she lives and works, and the large close-knit community of artists. “There is an amazing community of artists in the area. I’ve never lived anywhere that has had this kind of concentration of artists in one place who are so supportive and interested in what you are doing,” said Surabian. “People are just so friendly and want to help.” A lynchpin of the community can be found in oil painter Lilli Pell, a Wimberley resident since 1995 and a painter of 25 years. To look at a Lilli Pell painting is to experience both the beauty and the majesty of the interplay of light and the landscape of the Texas Hill country. Pell prefers to paint landscapes and animals with attention to the robust range of
Tim deJong color and contrast to be found in the area around her. To get the full experience of her work, Pell prefers that her paintings change as her viewer moves around them.“ I like a painting to look like a mess when you get up close to it. Then whenever you step back it looks real, not real tight realism, but you can tell what it is,” said Pell. Pell has found great success as an artist in Wimberley since she and her husband moved here in 1995, partly because of the city’s reputation. “I always liked it because it was known as a place where there were a number of artists and people thought and cared about art here,” said Pell. Pell’s work is displayed at Pitzer’s Fine Arts Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. or by appointment. If you prefer your art with a side of showmanship Tim deJong of Wimberley Glassworks is the artist for you. deJong has been a glass artist since 1979, creating beautiful glass sculptures that range from home-use to commercial abstract installations with an emphasis on color and design. deJong’s Wimberley Glassworks provides near daily demonstrations on the art of glass blowing, with deJong’s cheerful and comedic commentary on the art and process for visitors. While originally a potter, deJong was drawn to glass blowing in college. “I like its immediacy, the fact that you can’t stop in the middle. You have to be present all the way through,” said deJong. deJong’s pieces seem to

undulate in space with vibrant colors and design utilizing traditional Italian glass blowing techniques that demonstrate his mastery of the art. While deJong has worked in many places over the years he was drawn to Wimberley for the headquarters of his glass works due to the community and the natural beauty of the landscape. “It’s beautiful, there really aren’t a lot of places in this country that are this beautiful, “ said deJong. Wimberley Glassworks is located at 6469 Ranch Road 12 San Marcos, TX 78666 and is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m. Another longtime member of the artistic community is dedicated woodworker Gary Weeks of Gary Weeks and Company. The father and son business, run by Gary Weeks and his son Austin, is a prized member of the arts community. Founder Gary Weeks has dedicated himself to the craft and art of woodworking and his development 25 years ago of his own specific style of rocking chair. Despite what may seem at first glance a simple chair, Weeks has developed a sculptural form that cradles the human body with organic lines that blur the boundaries between function and art. “Comfort in those chairs is extremely important. If the chair fits a human it’s a expression in negative of a human’s form which has always been the source of sculpture in art,” said Story continues on page 46

With 126 acres nestled along Cypress Creek, a spring-fed tributary that stays a cool 70 degrees year round, Blue Hole Regional Park is considered one of the treasures of the Texas Hill Country. Along the banks of the creek are gigantic cypress trees, some of which are hundreds of years old. The canopies drape over the water creating a shaded conclave below. “In the heat of the summer, it is a special treat to dip in for a cold swim in Cypress Creek,” Blue Hole Park Director Rebecca Manning said. “The creek is fed from Jacob’s Well, and there are big beautiful cypress trees lining the banks. It is a huge draw being able to swim in that environment, which is unique to our area.” The beauty of Cypress Creek has made Blue Hole a destination for decades.

No longer a hidden gem, the park staff decided this year to institute a new reservations system in order to manage the flow of visitors. “We are really excited to be able to offer this,” Manning said. “We think it will be a positive change for everybody including staff and visitors.” Swimming starts on weekends in May and then runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day. There will be 250 people allowed in the swimming area at a given time with four-hour slots rotating twice a day from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. To make a reservation, visit www. cityofwimberley.com, click on the Departments tab and follow the links to Blue Hole. If there are no swimming reservations available, the park still has plenty of beauty to

Enjoy the outdoors WIMBERLEY OFFERS GREAT PARKS
As the seasons change in the Texas Hill Country so do the colors. Every spring, the landscape begins to shake off its monochromatic hues of winter when tree leaves reemerge and grasses begin to sprout. Soon, fields and roadsides are alive with bluebonnets, Indian paintbrushes, verbena and their many wildflower cousins.
Those shades of spring gradually evolve into the deep, glorious colors of summer as sunflower, firewheel, pink evening primrose and Mexican hat take turns painting the landscape. Meanwhile, birds return to the valley to add their color to the scene along with their musical sound track of song, chirps and tweets.

The best of nature is here and there’s no better way to enjoy what she offers than visiting one of the local parks. Cypress Creek Nature Trail is a small pocket park right off Old Kyle Road not far from the Wimberley Square, and it is the start of a long trail that winds through Wimberley. The trail is located on 7.24 acres developed by the city of Wimberley and leads from just off the busy Square to the First Baptist Church, located on the Winter’s Mill Parkway, at the entrance to Woodcreek on RR 12. With a pavilion, water pond, picnic tables, a small playground for the kids and clean rest rooms, the park is a good place to catch your breath. The trail follows the winding Cypress Creek into Blue Hole Regional Park, and continues all the way to the church. Old Baldy is iconic to local residents and is the latest addition to the city of Wimberley park system. Be sure to take your time in climbing the 218 steps, as the stairs can be uneven at times. Stories about its past from old timers include dances on top, an old telescope stand, camping overnight and legends about past Texas heroes visiting.
The View from Old Baldy
The steps are open to the public between 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., with parking for 3 to 4 vehicles available at the base. The steps have been a training ground for many local high school athletes, cursing the coaches on the way up but thankful for the view on the way down. Climbing the stairs and seeing the view will literally take your breath away. The 360-degree views of the Texas Hill Country
are spectacular. The park is located at 34 La Toya Circle. The Patsy Glenn Bird Refuge is a 1.8-acre park located at the far end of the Wimberley Community Center’s parking lot. It is part of the Wimberley Loop, a Texas Parks and Wildlife designated trail that consists of Blue Hole, the Red Corral Ranch and Jacob’s Well, all located in Wimberley, as well as Charro Ranch Park

the Hays/Comal County line. With newly refurbished shelters and picnic tables, they both are excellent places to refresh yourself with miles and miles of the Hill Country beauty spanning before you.

blueberry and cherry are also produced. The menu of wines changes as the grapes from distributors change. The winery is also a visual treat both outside and inside. Beautiful chandeliers, stained glass, handcrafted doors and other wooden features help to create an

CYPRESS CREEK RUM
SMALL BATCH HAND-CRAFTED David Watson was vacationing on Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean, when he fancied the local rum. Trying to import it on a large scale to this country was wrapped up in red tape, costly and time consuming. He decided to construct his own small distillery to make his own brand of rum - Cypress Creek Rum.
Since 2000, the Watson family has worked hard to perfect the process that makes their Cypress Creek Reserve a pleasure to drink, and they have been winning awards in the process. The small-batch process demands that special attention is paid to each and every batch, ensuring that Cypress Creek

Small vats used for distilling Cypress Creek Rum.
Reserve rums are always flavorful and easy to drink. The process begins by fermenting thick rich molasses and fresh Hill Country spring water with a select blend of yeast to produce Cypress Creek Reserve Crystal Rum. “The rum is distilled twice. There is a stripping run and a finishing run. Unlike vodka, rum needs to retain certain flavors that multiple distillations would remove,” Watson said. “I filter the rum through activated carbon for smoothness.”
The fresh spring water used to ferment and cut the rum is a huge asset that cannot be overlooked. Certainly this is one of the reasons that so many in the wine and spirit industry have located in the Texas Hill Country. So, enjoy the spirit of the Texas Hill Country and especially Wimberley, as you partake in these fine rums. Cypress Creek Reserve Rum is located at 1400 Jacobs Well Road. They can be reached at (512) 847-6874 or online at www.cypresscreekreserve.com.
MIDDLETON BREWERY IS BOOMING The craft beer industry is booming around the United States, and every city has their favorites. Wimberley can boast a few of its own including Middleton Brewery, located on the Ranch Road 12 on the way to San Marcos. Their handcrafted brews, from Porters to IPAs, Garnet Amber to Bobcat Red, have attracted visitors from near and far. During the evenings and weekends, the brewery lights up with activity as food trucks serve sliders and fried snacks, and local troubadours play their guitars to accompany the good times. The beer brewing tanks are next door to the tasting room/bar, although under the same roof. While the mainstay beers are offered throughout
the year, there are seasonal beers offered to match the weather. Dennis Middleton, a retired geologist and a home brewer for over thirty years, decided to open a small brewery at the Junction. The place turned out good brews, got rave reviews, and they moved and built the present building, which houses the entire operation a few years ago. “We have a dual purpose. We’re a neighborhood Cheers type bar and also a destination place. We love visitors from out of town who are looking for good beer,” Middleton General Manager Clay Rahmberg said. Flights of beer are offered as well as pints. They offer their best selling
brews in cans to take and quaff at home or on the go. “They’re perfect for the river,” Rahmburg said with a smile. Their draft brews are available in local restaurants and bars. “Where beer is brewed no evil can exist,” is an old Belgian saying that is posted on the wall and it appears to hold true for the Middleton Brewery. Middleton Brewery is located at 101 Oakwood Loop. They are open 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the week, closed on Tuesdays. Weekend hours are Friday noon to 10 p.m., Saturday noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday noon to 10 p.m. They can be reached at (512) 847-3435 or online at www.middletonbrewingtx.com.

MARKET DAYS:
A FAVORITE SHOPPNG DESTINATION SINCE 1964 Photo by Robert Anschutz
First Saturdays, March through December can mean only one thing – massive shopping opportunities available at Market Days. Ten times per year, locals and visitors make their way to one of the oldest and largest outdoor markets in Texas. Even in the heat of August, the Lions Club’s Market Days is packed with shoppers looking for that bargain, that special gift, or that one thing you just have to have even though five minutes ago you
didn’t know you needed it. Wimberley Market Days has opened its doors to the public since 1964. What started out as produce and crafts being sold off of truck tailgates has turned into nearly 20 acres with over 475 booths lining paved, tree-shaded lanes. The market has an eclectic blend of goods with everything from collectible antiques, jewelry and one-ofa-kind handmade furniture to unique children’s toys and
70 • 2018 Spring & Summer Wimberley Visitors Guide
gourmet food products. The brisket and other carnival-like smells of food permeate the grounds and cool liquids in many forms are available, helping visitors beat the heat and keep hydrated. Eight concession stands ranging from oldfashioned Texas barbecue and hot funnel cakes to an icehouse that slings out icecold beer and a new “drink of the month” are dispersed among the different shops. Booths are filled with things
that are bright and shiny, rusted and ancient, clothes, plants, neon, old art posters and things that remind one of the old adage, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Live music from local artists can be heard during the day from three separate pavilions located throughout the open market. Every first Saturday of the month, March through December, the second largest market in the Texas Hill Country is made possible
by the 200 Lion’s Club members and volunteers from the community. They work everything from the concessions to hauling large purchases to the parking lot. All the proceeds the Wimberley Market Days create go back into the community for local projects,
non-profits and activities. By the end of 2017 the Wimberley Lions Club contributed $4,000,000 to special needs camps, scholarships and organizations in the area. The majority of these donations are derived from the success of Wimberley Market Days.

Enjoy the biggest events of the Spring & Summer
Wimberley Arts Fest Big events bring lots of visitors to Wimberley and this year the EmilyAnn Theatre and Gardens will celebrate the 20th Annual Butterfly Festival. It has been a joy to watch this little festival grow and turn into a major event. And it’s all because of little caterpillars that are raised by volunteers, only to be released as 4000 beautiful butterflies. It is a event for families and especially children as all things butterfly are available and activities galore such
as bounce houses, face painting, a kiddie train and other kid activities. But the best part of the day is when butterflies are announced and released throughout the day. Cages are opened and the butterflies zoom out and locate the nearest melon in a child’s hand. The squeals of joy from the children and the photos they inspire are priceless. On display at the event, the Butterfly Art Contest entries submitted from Texas students, with the 2018 winning
entry displayed on commemorative T-shirts, available for sale at booths. It is a wonderful spring event. Date: April 21, 2018 Time: 9:00-5:00 p.m. (opening ceremonies from 9-10 a.m.) Website: emilyann.org/butterfly.html The Arts Fest. another people-pleasing event is held the next weekend, April 28 and 29. Held at Water’s Point at the Rio Bonito Resort, the beautiful setting is a great backdrop to the paintings, photography, crafts, jewelry and other object d’art that are on display. It all happens in tents. There are over 100 local and national artists exhibiting their handiwork and each has a special talent in their medium. There’s free parking, beverage and food trailers and of course there will be live music. For more information see the website at: wimberleyartleague. org/event/arts-fest-2018/ The Fourth of July in Wimberley is an old-fashioned treat. The whole town turns out for it and they’re either in it or watching it. Lots of flags, Boy and Girl Scouts, and other local organizations and businesses decorate floats and everyone beams with patriotic pride. The parade takes place on FM 2325 and Ranch Road 12 starting at 10 a.m. Later that day is the 7th Annual July Hometown Patriotic Concerts with the Wimberley Community Chorus with the Hill Country Community Band perform Americana classics at 1 and 4 p.m. Visit wimberleycommunitychorus. org and hillcountrycommunityband. org for more information. On July 5, 6, and 7, local VFW Post

6441 sponsors the VFW rodeo. The rodeo is everything a Texas rodeo should be. The Lone Star Cowgirls, a precision team on horseback, open the proceedings, then there’s the mutton busting for kids (riding on the back of sheep) and roping,
riding, and riding both bulls and horses. The rodeo is CPRA professionally sanctioned with clown bullfighter Leon Coffee, a Texas legend appearing. The Annual Wimberley VFW Rodeo always features great rodeo excitement. Visit www.texasvfw.net .
