O

nce the excitement of a New Year passes, we immediately jump into our specific roles and charge forward with our plans for the year.

This is the season of Competitions and Conventions. Seeing how focused students are into getting ready for the stage, not only to perform but to also learn from the master classes and other teaching that these events offer to the students, we can only praise and cheer them on.

There is so much going on in the dance world that we have extended the pages to accommodate as many events that were submitted to us. Please support the dance community by supporting these events.

Successful dance companies create more work for our upcoming young dancers.

April is the month we celebrate Dance Day. Remember to send us your plans for that day and we’ll pass it along to our readers. In this issue Jenne Vermes has a serious dance debate she would like for you to respond back to her after you have read it. -Is Dance a Sport or Not?Our doctor in residence, Dr. Kathleen Davenport, is sharing new alternatives to consider during your healing process after an injury. Our amazing health guru, Kate Corallo, is guiding us in the functions of our kidneys and how we can take better care of it with her simple yet effective recipes.

I’ve been challenged to write an article I’ve been feeling strongly about. In the segment of “In My Opinion”, I’m sharing my thoughts on whether students should speed up their training just to move up the levels faster and how important it is to really master the basics.

Recognizing Outstanding Women in the Arts (ROWITA) Celebration Ceremony

Patel Conservatory

The St. Johns Cultural Council will hold their ninth annual ROWITA Celebration Ceremony on March 11 at 6:00 p.m. in the Limelight Theatre located at 11 Old Mission Avenue.

The free event will be an evening of celebration and recognition of the four women chosen to receive the 2018 Dr. Gail Pflaster ROWITA Award for their achievements and contributions to the arts in St. Johns County. The 2018 honorees are Linda M. Brandt, Deborah Dickey, Laurie Allen Klein and Carolyn Juliet Fisher.

The winners of the Jr. ROWITA Fellowships, a scholarship for graduating high school women who intend to develop their artistic skills through continued study and training, will also be recognized during the ceremony. A reception will follow the ceremony.

The Dr Gail Pflaster ROWITA is awarded each year to honor the contributions women have made to the artistic environment in St Johns County. It was founded by the late Dr. Pflaster, a local writer and committed arts supporter. “There was no one in the community celebrating our local women arts leaders, so Dr. Pflaster and I discussed what could be done to remedy that matter,” said Joy D’Elia, St. Johns Cultural Council ROWITA Program Coordinator. “Thanks to her, we’ve been celebrating women in the arts since 2009. I am constantly amazed and inspired by the women we have honored each year.”

Nominations for the awards come from the general public.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF CULTURAL AFFAIRS GRANT PROGRAMS

Momentum Dance Company, one of the oldest and most established professional contemporary dance companies in the Southeastern U.S., is proud to present its spring show on Sunday, March 25, 2018. The Spring Season will showcase a World Premiere by Delma Iles, choreographer Katie Brennan’s debut of Off the Sidewalk, a piece with five dancers that explores the dynamic between the collective and the individual while traveling both outer and inner landscapes. Additionally, it will include Gold Falling Through Water, Brecht Suite and Shadows and Accumulations.

Gold Falling Through Water premiered on Momentum’s 35th anniversary season. Iles, who choreographed the work for five women, calls t it “controlled chaos, a poem with tenderness, aspiration, and implied violence.” It is set to the Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major by French composer Gabriel Faure and the score will be played live by frequent Momentum collaborator and music consultant, Dr. Alan Ngim on the piano and will be joined by virtuoso violinist Anne Chicheportiche. Iles remembers that “creating this work was wrenching, but it poured out of me like water - unusually fast for such a monumental work”.

Brecht Suite was created in 1996 for Cuban ballerina Rosario “Charin” Suarez when she first defected and came to the U.S. Iles created it for her as a transition from the classical repertory that she had mastered, to a newer, more modern expression of dance. The work presents portraits of three women, each a different age, but each ravaged by betrayal, lust, sorrow, and loss. This emotionally powerful work is set to three art songs by the masterful duo of Kurt Weil (music) and Bertolt Brecht (lyrics), creators of the Threepenny Opera and other works of postwar disillusion. Celebrates the 200th Anniversary of Marius Petipa Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, is getting ready to celebrate Marius Petipa’s 200 anniversary presenting two different programs in March and April to close their 17-18 season.

A collection of his most famous ballets such as Harlequinade and Sleeping Beauty for the March performance and to close the season, the April program will include excerpts of La Bayadere, Talisman, Swan Lake, Don Quixote and Divertissements of Le Corsaire, before their participation at the International Dancers Festival in several cities in Poland, also in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Poland’s independence in 2018.

The company dancers have prima ballerina Mary Carmen Catoya along with the most impressive international and local dancers: Janis Liu (Hong Kong) recently Gold Medal at the Miami International Ballet Competition, Kazuya Arima, Hinano Eto, Saori Morioka, Izumi Masaki, Ayami Sato, Rieko Morioka (Japan), Lusian Hernandez ( Venezuela), Kevin Zong, Lily Davidson, Monica Delgado, Georgia Brinkman, Emily Parnell (USA) among others.

Harlequinade has long been a “forgotten” ballet, with only a few restorations within the past hundred years. However, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida’s production of the ballet represents the original storyline, and upholds the classical style in which it was first choreographed, while still maintaining a fresh and exciting atmosphere. DANCE NOW! Spring Season 2018 Showcase

South Florida’s leading contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, returns for a Spring 2018 season of beauty, technical virtuosity and social engagement. In its stylistic diversity, with venues spread throughout the region, and with a first visit by and second collaboration with an outstanding Mexican company, it promises to be one of their best yet.

New World School of the Arts closed 2017 with an outstanding roster of recognized students in all arts disciplines. With 24 new YoungArts awards, the total honors for New World School of the Arts now exceed 300 since the onset of the program.

“The New World Family is honored to have six Finalists in Dance, Theater and Visual Arts. This is a tribute to the finest faculty in the country, as well as highly driven and talented students that have consistently prepared to arrive at this moment,” said Evonne Alvarez, High School Principal at New World School of the Arts. These awards include nine Honorable Mentions and nine Merit Awards. “Our students will participate in YoungArts Week in January as well as February to further develop their professional skills and forge relationships with professional artists and colleagues.”

“YoungArts gave me the faith to trust in myself. As a Finalist, I was revitalized to continue my love for theater,” said Ismael Gonzalez, a music theater major at NWSA who credits New World School of the Arts for his inspiration “to work and express my passion for theater,” and highlights his

peers for exposing him to greater depths in his field of art he could not find on his own.

Melissa Fernandez-Flores, a visual arts Finalist notes, “New World School of the Arts has prepared me for this accomplishment by offering rigorous art classes to develop my visual language and skill.

Without the support of my teachers and peers, I wouldn’t have received this magnificent award.” Melissa looks forward to the opportunities that being a YoungArts Finalists affords, such as “connecting with many professional artists from around the world.”

Dance Finalist Alexa Flores points out that being a YoungArts Finalist has given her hope that she will be able to continue her art form as a career once she graduates from New World School of the Arts. “I cannot wait to continue learning and growing as a person and as a dancer,” said Alexa who is currently in the process of auditioning for universities post-graduation.

Conchita Espinosa Conservatory of the Arts presents the First Annual Young Artist Gala

New World School of the Arts, Dance Department - 25 NE 2nd Street, Miami FL, 33132 Castilla by Albeniz, which will be performed by 17-year old Sabrina Lazo. Ms. Lazo, now a dance student at New World School of the Arts, began her studies at the Conservatory at the age of seven, and has since developed into a versatile dancer with impeccable technique and wide expressive capabilities. As a part of the Albeniz suite, 17-year old classical guitar student, Matthias Cippolla, will delight the audience with his interpretation of Asturias. Cippolla has studied guitar at the Conservatory with Mirta de la Torre for over 10 years. The Conservatory’s Segovia Ballet Español will debut Esperanza, an original piece choreographed for them by former Ballet Nacional de España dancer, Paloma Gomez.

Alejandro Fernandez, 15 years old, studies piano at the Conservatory under the Florida Chamber Orchestra’s Maestro Marlene Urbay. He has had the honor of performing alongside the orchestra several times, and in 2015 placed as a finalist in the Chopin for All Piano Competition. He will interpret Mendelssohn’s Rondo Cappricioso Katherine Marino, also 15 years old, studies piano at the Conservatory with Ibette Fernandez, one of the Conservatory’s most promising professors. She is also the pianist at New World School of the Arts High School, where she plays in the jazz ensemble under Jim Gasior. For the Young Artist Gala, she will perform alongside the New World School of the Arts Jazz Ensemble.

Conchita Espinosa Conservatory of the Arts (CEC) is proud to present its first annual Young Artist Gala on Sunday, March 18th at 5:00 p.m. at New World School of the Arts. The Young Artist Gala will feature the Conservatory’s most advanced and dedicated young musicians, dancers, and actors, who have been invited to showcase their achievements and express their artistry on one stage.

This performance will celebrate three of the Conservatory’s dancers, Cristine Arguelles, Angela Santalo, and Gabriella Gabino-Corzo, who are graduating from high school and completing their final year at the Conservatory.

The Dance Department will present several pieces by award-winning choreographer and Ballet, Lyrical, and Jazz Department Head, Danella Bedford. Valedictorian of her class at the Royal Ballet School, Ms. Bedford’s choreographies have a wide range, are incredibly diverse in style, and have been showcased numerous times at Florida Dance Festival on tour as well as winning many other choreographic awards. CEC’s students benefit from Ms. Bedford´s meticulous teaching and keen awareness of the physical, mental and emotional development of each young dancer, which is evident in their performance. Her ballet and contemporary dance students will demonstrate their vast capacity of interpretation through the variety of pieces performed, some of which include Kaleidescope, Ave Maria, and a suite from the Broadway musical Hair.

The Book of Psalms Dance Performance Inspired by Biblical Verse The Bible is filled with some of the world’s most beautiful lyrical poetry.

Dance NOW! Miami has daringly created a new work inspired by probably the best Old Testament example of this in their The Book of Psalms, which will have its World Premiere at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center on Saturday, April 21, at 8:30 pm, as part of their evening of work called Contemporanea 2018. The company, South Florida’s leading proponent of contemporary dance, brings its emblematic graceful athleticism and syncretic of-the-moment style to this very special event. The evening also includes the Miami Premiere of Touch Me, the duet XY The Engine of Life, and the World Premiere of Here On Earth.

The Book of Psalms, choreographed by company Artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten and Diego Salterini, is a contemporary dance journey through the hopes, joys, loyalties, sorrows, doubts and aspirations of the human heart. “It’s especially wonderful for me, a Jewish woman, to engage these ancient biblical texts, as a choreographer and a leader of our company,” says Baumgarten. “While most Psalm-inspired musical works are big choral arrangements, our dance piece will be both musically and thematically more intimate and personal.” The piece will feature an original score from Milwaukee Conservatory of Music percussionist DeLayne Doyle, costumes from Renato Armijo of Chernaya Bridal House, a breathtaking set from Elizabeth Camargo, President of the Miami Chapter of A.I.A., and lighting from long-time company collaborator and Technical Director Bruce F. DKDC/DIYProjects will present Demetrius Klein Dance Company’s annual performance of Handel’s “Messiah” at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in West Palm Beach on Saturday, March 24 at 7:00 pm.

The company is in its third year in residence at the church.

Last spring’s performance was filled to capacity. “It’s such a popular piece, I think because the joy coming from the music through the dancers is palpable. Audiences love seeing the dancers visualize this beloved musical score. We are so grateful to the church to allow us to present it again.” says Associate Artistic Director Kori Epps.

Klein will be adding a new “elder dance” section to this year’s performance. He explains, “I am seeing this section as a celebration of a life in dance. I think that it’s particularly important to note that it’s performed to the Pastoral Symphony. At our ages (over 55), much has either been intentionally stripped away or has naturally fallen by the wayside. We are hopefully left with the beauty and essence of why we dance in the first place.”

St. Lucie Ballet students earn top Scores.

Five St. Lucie Ballet students traveled to Atlanta Georgia January 19th to 21st for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP) the world’s largest global network of dance. YAGP reaches over 10,000 dance students annually by holding workshops, scholarship auditions, master classes and audition classes in 25 U.S cities and 8 international locations. All five students ages 11 through 16 performed extremely well at The Ferst Center at Georgia Tech University. Isabella McCool age 10, Alyssa Hurtado age 12, Emma Butterworth age 12, Aleana Perez age 13, and Liala Lezama age 16.

In the Pre Competitive category for ages 9-11 Isabella McCool earned Top 12 in both the Classical and Contemporary category plus an invitation to YAGP New York City Finals in April. In the

Ensemble category, “The Little Humpbacked Horse” (a classical ballet quartet) including dancers Isabella McCool, Alyssa Hurtado, Emma Butterworth, and Aleana Perez earned Top 6 and also an invitation to New York Finals. Miami International Ballet Competition The Miami International Ballet Competition was held January 24 - 28 in North Miami. They awarded 15 scholarships to distinguished international ballet academies, either for summer programs or year round .

Is Dance a Sport?

What qualifies it as a sport or not!

This is an age old question that dancers are often asked, both outside of and within the dance community. Is dance a sport? The answer, for some, is a simple yes or no. For others, the answer is often filled with heated passion, detailed consideration, and triple checked references on either side of the argument.

In one of my recent classes, I mentioned the question of whether or not dance is a sport, and after a few minutes of calmly trading debate points, the students soon exploded into arguments across the studio. I thought I might have a riot on my hands.

Four Reasons Summer Plans /// Summer Time

It can be hard to figure out where one stands on this topic just from reading the opinions and essays of others in this field. It is nearly impossible to find an article or essay written on this subject that presents the opposing argument without bias.

One thing I’ve come across most often is the idea that dance is more difficult than, more athletic than, or somehow worth more than any other sport, and that is what makes it a sport in and of itself.

Position: Dance IS a sport.

Qualifications: • Dance is an intensely athletic activity that requires physical skill and ability • It requires specified training and years of practice to hone physical attributes such as flexibility, strength, and graceful movement in much the same way as a baseball player must train his abilities to swing/hit, catch, make team plays, and run.

• It is competed both in teams and as individuals at regional, national and international levels in the same manner that sports

However, that kind of thinking does not clearly place dance in either category as it is often more focused on putting dance above all sports in general.

Any way you look at it, this is a hot-button issue, no doubt, and for that reason I believe the best thing we all can do to work out

• The requirement of training and practice is not a positive indicator of a sport, as many activities require specified training and years of practice but are not sports like playing the piano or painting and sculpting.

• Many activities are competed in teams and as individuals at regional, national and international levels such as robotics and math, violin and sculpture, and even essay writing, but none of these activities are granted the status of sport based on their competitive nature.

• Dance is recognized as an art form in the professional world as well as in post-secondary institutions, as dance is offered by most colleges as a major course of study within the arts and sciences department. Dance is not offered as a collegiate sport, nor is it recognized as a sport by the NCAA. • To become a professional singer one must have superior skill and endurance over other singers and either audition/try out for positions with professional companies/agencies or be scouted at performances in the same manner as athletes such as football and baseball players do, but singing is not considered a sport.

• When a dance composition or performance is required to meet certain criteria for judgment and/or competition, it may lose some of its artistry in order to showcase necessary tricks or skills

like gymnastics and swimming are.

• Competitive ballroom dancing is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a sport, though it is not yet accepted to be included in the Olympic Games • To become a professional one must have superior skill and endurance over other dancers and either audition/try out for positions with professional companies or be scouted at performances in the same manner as athletes such as football and baseball players do.

• Dance can be both a sport and an art simultaneously, and the necessity of meeting competitive criterion does not automatically negate one’s ability to compose and/or perform dance artistically.

Position: Dance IS NOT a sport.

Qualifications: • Being an athletic activity does not automatically mean something is a sport. For example, building a house is an activity that requires athleticism and physical prowess, but it is not automatically considered a sport based on that factor.

While there are many ways to present and refute arguments on either side, there is ultimately the question of whether or not dance is a sport if it qualifies on three distinct levels: athleticism, competition and required training/skill. It is because dance hits all three of those marks that many do consider it a sport. It is also because it doesn’t always have to hit all three of those marks that many do not consider it a sport.

When dance is compared to team and individual sports such as football and swimming, it is easy to see clear similarities that make dance fit all of the criteria involved in being a sport. However, when dance is thought of in the same category as other art forms such as singing and writing, there are also strong distinctions that may categorize it as an art and keep it from achieving concrete status as a sport. The attributes listed above in either category are only some of the comparative elements of this great debate, and there are surely hundreds more that dancers can think of as we dive even deeper into it. that must be included in order to meet competitive qualifications.

The greatest thing I have learned from tackling this question is that dance is so versatile and so complex that it is difficult to categorize as just one thing. It is such an athletic art form that is has the qualities of a sport, and it is such a graceful and meaningful athletic activity that it can be performed as an art. Dance can, in fact, be both an art and a sport at the same time if one chooses for it to be so.

Athleticism and physical prowess do not necessarily make an activity a sport, as there are many official sports which do not have high levels of athletic ability as a component. Racecar driving is an international sport which does not require nearly as much athletic ability or fitness as dancing and many other activities do. Billiards and pool (cuesports) are also sports which do not require high levels of physical activity and rigorous physical training but are officially labeled as sports. On the other side of that argument, does the presence of high amounts of physical activity and requirement of high-level athletic skill grant an activity the status of sport? For example, yoga and pilates are extremely athletic activities but they are not considered sports.

I want to know where you, the reader, stands on this issue. I want to know which category you place dance in and why. Write to me and tell me whether or not you think dance is a sport, and let’s keep exploring this truly difficult question.

Does competition automatically qualify something as a sport?

That is definitely an idea that brings much debate. Many people cite the competitive nature of dance as part of the reason it breaks out of just being an art and places itself into the sport category.

However, there are plenty of activities that are competitive that don’t automatically qualify as a sport such as singing or playing an instrument, writing essays, and designing and creating a costume.

Accelerating vs. Excelling Acceleration: Hastening, speeding up, quickening, stepping up, advancement, Excelling: Be exceptionally good at or proficient in an activity or subject.

Would you prefer your child to excel and become an amazing, passionate dancer or an advanced class student that is struggling, stressed and ready to quit?

We take these same insecurities and we consciously or unconsciously instill them in our kids. You must be busy, you must excel, and you must be the best version of yourself, if not for you then for me, because it makes me, as a parent, look good to my peers.

In the dance world this can make or break a dancer. Sometimes they make it well into their teens and beyond and at other times they burn out so early you wonder why they lost interest in dance, something they were so passionate about.

hese two words express exactly the world we are living in right now. We make our dancers move up to levels they are really not yet prepared for instead of allowing them the time to become exceptionally good mastering the basics of dance.

Presently we are living in the age of instant gratification. We no longer take the time to stroll down the street, smell the coffee and bakery goods wafting into our senses from the nearby bakery or the feel of the sun’s warmth and gorgeous rays, thus appreciating and enjoying another great day. We only notice whether it’s raining –an inconvenience or if it’s sunny - good I can continue to charge forward. Where am I going? Nowhere really.

We’ve taken this attitude and applied it to every aspect of our lives. Before we even go to bed at night, we are already filling our to-do list with actions, errands and chores to be accomplished in the next 24 hours of our life.

Seldom do we take the time to perfect or focus on any one thing we’re doing. The new word that came out of all of this is “multi-tasking”. We pride ourselves on being able to multitask. But the truth is, are we really accomplishing anything at the best of our ability when we multitask?

In my humble opinion and, believe me, I’m your prime example of a multitasker, at the end of the day I have done much and accomplished little. So if this is where we spend most of our time, texting while having a conversation with someone, or sitting across the table with a friend to catch up and you both spend half of the time looking at your cell phones, then the question really is: Why bother meeting to catch up if you are still absent from the moment?

I was born and raised on a little Dutch Colony island. Our school system is based on the Dutch approach to learning. Therefore we received an exceptional education: very strict and precise and the rules are meant for everyone. A student may fail a class by one-tenth of a grade and have to repeat the whole year because of that. For the longest time I thought that it was cruel and unnecessary.

When I moved to the United States, I became a substitute teacher at a middle school in my community. Having not gone to school here and enrolling my two children in this school system, I had a lot to learn about the American schools.

To my surprise I learned that other languages besides English are not taught at school. During my school years, as early as kindergarten, I was immediately introduced to Dutch. For the rest of my school years I would learn to read, write, speak and master that language. In fourth grade, Spanish is incorporated into the curriculum and, from then on, we also have to read, write, speak and master Spanish. In fifth grade English is taught, which we have to master reading, writing and speaking this additional language.

Depending on how adventurous you are in high school, you may add German and French. Every child, by the time they reach five years old, is already speaking four languages without any effort.

I didn’t include Papiamento, our local language. All elementary school students in Aruba will already be speaking English, Dutch, Papiamento and Spanish before reaching middle school.

We want to get so much done in as little time as possible, justifying our importance in this world, not only to our environment but mostly to ourselves. We are constantly validating ourselves to be worthy of something, which in most cases we really are still not sure what that is.

Act” which was introduced to enable children to feel good about themselves accomplished the exact opposite. The act of allowing these students to pass a grade, even though they were not ready, created more problems for those same children. If you haven’t mastered the basics, there is no way you can excel at the upcoming subjects or tasks.

I know I’ve gone deep into this topic and you’re wondering what it has to do with dance. In dance I have witnessed the same scenario happening, either because a studio doesn’t want to lose the attendance of their students, the parent is being demanding that their child accelerate at a faster pace or the teachers are not qualified to know when it’s the right time for a student to move up.

These decisions can make or break dancers early or later in their training. If students have not mastered the basics of dance, working on strength, precision, and timing, then if and when they move to the higher level they will have to work twice as hard to be the best they can be. This can increase injury, bad technique and burnout.

The longer a student spends on basic technique training, trusting he/she has a great teacher, the better he or she is prepared for the next level. At the next level the only focus will be mastering the new steps and not having to remember the basics, because the basics would be instilled so deep into the subconscious that the movements would be on automatic pilot.

So let’s return to my American experience. I started subbing and learned about the “No child left behind Act”. I must say- I was stunned. How is it possible to advance students to the next grade without making sure that they have already mastered the grade they are in? That made utterly no sense to me.

As a substitute teacher in middle school, it soon became apparent what this policy was doing to the children. Students’ low self-esteem became worse, being targeted as troubled pertaining to the embarrassment of not knowing the material than actual bad behavior. It was a distraction from having to show their incompetence in class. Many were mildly illiterate, unable to tell time on an analog watch or understand science topics because of their inability to read. So the “No child left behind

So to all parents, studio owners, and teachers, let’s be fair and attentive to our students. Let’s give them the best early training possible right from the beginning and accept that it is alright if they are not ready to move up to the next level even if their friends are moving up. Sometimes it’s the students who are left behind who become the ones that surpass the others, because they were able to really master the basics and retain it deep in their core.

So, regarding “Acceleration vs. Excelling”, would you prefer your child to excel and become an amazing, passionate dancer or an advance class student that is struggling, stressed and ready to quit?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections

What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) injections have gained in popularity and usage in recent years in the sports medicine and dance medicine communities and more research has been done on how helpful this treatment may be. When an injury happens in the body, platelets rush to that area to heal the injury. The platelets are cells that are in the blood and contain many elements, which play an important role in healing. A PRP injection uses the platelets out of the blood so they are concentrated stronger. Then, these healing cells are injected in an area of injury, such as a tendon or a joint.

Does PRP work?

Current research shows PRP may be beneficial for some musculoskeletal injuries. These may include problems at the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and/or ankle, to name a few. Research studies show that PRP may be helpful for tendon and joint problems, like tendinitis, partial tendon tears, and osteoarthritis. The research shows that PRP is a relatively safe procedure with a low risk of adverse events. Since it’s your own cells, the risks are minimal. However, there are always risks and side effects with any treatment and you should talk with your dance medicine doctor before considering PRP. Even if risks are low, you may need to be out of dance after an injection. So full discussion of the treatment, your dance level, and dance schedule is important in order to make the best decision for your dancing and activity.

How does it work?

PRP involves taking blood and separating out the platelets, the healing cells. Then, your doctor injects the platelets into the injured tendon or joint. These cells restart the body’s normal inflammatory healing process in the area of injury. The goal is to bring healing factors to an area of injury in the body. What is the follow up after PRP injection?

What does the PRP injection involve?

After PRP injection, you may require brace, boot, crutches, and/or a sling, depending on the area that was injected. This is the reason for the consultation visit prior to injection, so you and your doctor can discuss what may be needed. You may require physical therapy and/or a home exercise program, depending on the area of injection. You will need to follow up with your dance medicine doctor at intervals to check in the progress and healing. Usually, imaging is not repeated and most often only one injection is required. It can take up to 12 weeks, or sometimes longer, after injection to return to all activities and determine if the injection was helpful or not.

That does not mean you are not doing any dancing in that time, but it may mean that you could be limited in some of your dance activities immediately after the injection. The goal of PRP is to help you resume your activities and dancing so your dance medicine doctor will be able to help guide you on the best way to return safely to your level of dance.

A PRP injection starts with a consultation visit to your dance medicine doctor to address your area of pain, review imaging (x-rays, MRI), evaluate treatments already completed, and discuss potential future treatment options. PRP may or may not be recommended for your issue. If you and your doctor decide to continue with PRP treatment, you may need to stop certain medications and/or supplements prior to the injection. On the day of the injection, you would have blood drawn, which is placed in a machine to separate out the platelets, the healing cells. Your area of pain will be injected with the platelets that same day, sometimes using an ultrasound machine for injection guidance. The injection usually causes some discomfort in the short term. After the injection, you may need to immobilize the area and then may need physical therapy. This will depend on where you had the injection and your treatment plan with your dance medicine doctor.

The Amazing Kidneys /// Healthy Eating & Lifestyle

The Amazing Kidneys…

This article is lovingly dedicated to a dear friend, who has 1 less kidney this year…but she is living just fine

with one. 1 in 750 people are born with 1 kidney. It is more prevalent in men and it is called renal agenesis.

We don’t talk much about kidneys and we may even take them for granted, but they work 24/7 like a powerful water filtration system for the body. The kidneys retain protein and nutrients, but filter toxins and useless water out of the bloodstream by way of urine. Kidneys regulate water volume in the blood, maintain salt levels, regulate acid/ alkaline balances, and excrete waste.

Research finds that kidneys process up to 150 quarts of blood daily and make 1-2 quarts of urine that gets excreted every day. Those fist sized organs are situated at the lower back about the height of the belly button. Perhaps, when the lower backs aches, it actually means the kidneys are asking for more water. Kidneys can’t work well when they are dry and constricted from too much salt, stress and over strenuous activity. Kidneys must stay hydrated.

Kidneys and the bladder are considered to be the core of the being, carrying the capacity for action, instinct, and willpower. The Adrenal glands, along with the kidneys, govern the instinct of how we perceive threats, fears, trauma and shock.

In Chinese medicine, fear is held in the kidneys. If kidneys are compromised, facial skin may look washed out and pale. Dark circles and blue patches form under the eyes.

Kidneys are resilient, but they are not indestructible. When the kidneys are not working properly, a kidney transplant and or dialysis to artificially assist in filtering the bloodstream may be prescribed. Perhaps a cancerous tumor develops and the kidney must be removed. Kidneys can suddenly fail in the response to certain toxins, blockages or infections or even with time. One kidney learns to compensate for its missing counterpart so the body can work well with one kidney.

We already know that a typical American diet, from animal protein and processed sugars, (meat-sweet diet) is damaging to the blood vessels inside the heart and brain. Kidneys are red because

they too are packed with blood vessels. Studies shown from autopsies of kidneys find they are often full of fat and cholesterol.

If eating a plant-based diet reduces cholesterol in the heart and brain, it should help the kidneys too. There is a Harvard University study that lasted over 10 years researching this very topic.

Yes, there are drugs that help, but learning to eat a plant-based diet to slow down the degeneration of the kidney is a better solution.

Animal protein is acid-forming and causes inflammation. Kidney disease patients should reduce their meat consumption and eat more fruits and plants. An acid forming meat-sweet diet can damage the tiny tubes that the urine flows through in the kidneys. Kidneys come to their own rescue and produce ammonia to help neutralize the acids of an animal based diet, but eventually this neutralizing process can have a toxic effect. This is why a plant-based, non-acidic, anti-inflammatory diet is highly recommended sooner than later.

Go Plant-Based to Keep the Kidneys Healthy.

Leafy green veggies like collard greens, kale, and arugula are among the highest plant-based nitrate containing vegetables. (Nitrates from animal-based foods are not healing for the body.) Swiss chard, beets and beet greens, basil, mesclun greens, butter leaf lettuce, and cilantro all have the power to protect the kidneys and organs as well.

As mentioned before, proper hydration is so important. Refrain from alcohol, coffee, soda pops, caffeinated teas, refined sugars, tropical fruit juices, drinks flavored with natural flavors, and even living in polluted and frenetic cities. These all weaken the kidneys, bladder, and adrenals, which are located above the kidneys. (See photo of kidneys.)

Kidneys love water, potassium, fruits, veggies, herbs and magnesium. The more veggies you eat, the less water consumption is needed.

People with kidney imbalance are often cold, physically and socially. Cooking and eating hearty, healing soups, vegetables, beans and whole-grain stews will keep the kidneys warm and densely nourished. If the kidneys are nourished the body will stay warm in the winter months and comfortable in the warmer months.

Shiitake Tea 1 Dried Shiitake Mushroom 1 Cup Spring Water Splash Soy Sauce Soak the shiitake mushroom in water until tender, about 20 minutes. Finely mince and place back into the soaking water. Bring to a boil, uncovered. Reduce the heat to low and let the mushroom simmer 10-15 minutes.

Add the soy sauce and simmer 2-3 minutes more. Pour in cup and garnish with grated ginger for extra warmth. Drink the entire liquid and eat the mushroom while hot. Drink this tea 2-3 times weekly for 1 month. You will feel stronger, yet relaxed, as you will also be able to sleep more efficiently.

Practice Mindful Movement to Keep Kidneys Healthy.

People with kidney imbalance should practice and may be drawn to the arts and creative movement, Tai Chi, yin yoga, and dance to stay healthy. They should be encouraged to join theater groups, dance classes, yoga studios, and art museums, art classes, knitting, and needlepoint classes for creative enrichment.

Meridians, which in Chinese medicine, are pathways that run through the body in which energy or chi flows. There are at least 12 pathways associated with specific organs that all end in the foot.

In yin yoga classes, poses are practiced that open these meridians to help find release, good energy and wellness in the body. Yin yoga poses such as caterpillar, sphinx, and seal all open the kidney meridian.

You can trace the kidney meridian through your body as you read this. Begin on the right side of your body. It begins at the inner aspect of the small toe and runs across the sole of the foot and arch.

It circles the inner ankle and heel to ascend the inner leg and then penetrates the body to the kidneys, bladder, liver, spinal bones and coccyx, sacral and lumbar vertebrae, diaphragm and lung in a series of tributaries which continue from the lung to the throat and end at the root of the tongue.

Kidneys should be kept warm, nourished with plant-based foods, and hydrated to keep working efficiently. Mindful movement and creative outlets, as well as living in a clean breathing environment assist in kidney health. Kidneys never take a day off. They really are hard-working and now you have learned how to take care of those amazing kidneys!

Heart & Soul Gala

The Actors Fund, Dancers In Transition, and Anka Palitz in Step at Heart & Soul Gala The 9th Annual Heart & Soul Gala chaired by Palm Beach’s Anka Palitz and honoring Wendy Whelan and Dr. Omar & Cheryl Almallah was held at The Breakers.

The evening featured incredible dancing by the Boca Ballet Theatre, Ballet Palm Beach and Downtown Dance. Rob Russell, one of the “talented voices of Palm Beach” was the MC and vocalist for the festivities and Palm Beach’s favorite auctioneer Jay Zeager was on hand to help the evening become a financial success for Dancers in Transition. Dr. Omar & Cheryl Almallah displayed their elegant and sophisticated Ballroom dancing and the Heart & Soul Gala guests courageously joined in. Wendy Whelan, principal dancer with the New York City Ballet shared her moving “transition” story with the audience as did Mary Roberts. The Actors Fund CEO Joseph Benincasa was also on hand to address the Heart & Soul Gala. This was a graceful evening on all levels. Congratulations to Anka Palitz and her co-chairs Lois Pope and Ann Van Ness.

Dance Day Preparations On the 29th of April, as every year since 1982, the official Dance Day will be celebrated all over the world by millions of dancers.

It is an initiative of the International Dance Council CID, UNESCO. We have prepared the following guidelines as a checklist for persons active in the wider field of dance: teachers, choreographers, group leaders, journalists, researchers, associations, suppliers, organizations etc.

This can be done in a short speech, a note in the program, a text distributed to those present. By adding this dimension you make the event different from dance activities taking place any other day.

In order to achieve maximum success, it is important that preparations start early enough.

It is imperative to inform the press and generally the media about your event.

Notify an organization holding a central position at regional or national level, which should publish a list of events planned for Dance Day. Entrance to events should preferably be free, or by invitation. Invite persons who do not normally attend dance events.

The main purpose of Dance Day events is to attract the attention of the wider public to the art of dance. Emphasis should be given to addressing a new public, people who do not follow dance events during the course of the year.

Events

Dance Day events may be special performances, open-door classes, public rehearsals, lectures, exhibitions, articles in newspapers and magazines, dance evenings, radio and TV programs, visits, street shows, parades, shop window decorations etc.

Organizers

Events are primarily organized by dance companies, amateur groups, schools, associations and other institutions active in dance.

Wherever possible, it is better for events to be organized jointly with a non-dance institution such as a government agency, a public school, a municipality, a business enterprise, a trade union.

Content

Organizers have full freedom to define the content of the event.

The work will feature an original score from Milwaukee-based percussionist DeLayne Doyle, costumes from Renato Armijo of Chernaya Bridal House, and a breathtaking set from Elizabeth Camargo, President of the Miami Chapter of A.I.A., with lighting from long-time collaborator Bruce F. Rogelio Coralles St. Lucie Ballet Co-Director and Co-Owner

A

native of Cuba, Rogelio studied ballet with many of the best ballet masters of his country. He graduated in 1991 at the age of 18 from The National School of Ballet in Havana. Here they studied ballet, modern, folklorico, methodology, history and anatomy.

In 1992 he joined the Ballet Juvenil de Caracas for two years then The Metropolitan Ballet of Caracas for one year before coming to The United States.

His first company in the U.S. was Bay Ballet Theatre of Tampa. Then as a free-lance performer guest appearing with many dance academies and dance companies such as Ft. Lauderdale’s Ballet Classique, Columbus Youth Ballet, Palm Beach Ballet Center, Miami International Ballet, Lexington Ballet and Miami Hispanic Ballet. In 1996 he joined The Sarasota Ballet for two seasons.

From 1998 to 2004 Rogelio was principle at Minnesota Ballet in Duluth MN. He brought to life so many roles classical and others that were highly praised in the Duluth News Tribune. He was loved and admired by many dance and art lovers in Duluth and by his peers for his discipline at work, his virtuosity on stage, and his kind and sincere personality off.

In 2005 he became member of Ballet Florida in Palm Beach Florida. He very quickly moved through the ranks to portray many important and principle roles at this company.

As guest performer Mr. Corrales performed with Rockford Dance Company in Illinois where he was reviewed by The Rock River Times. “Rogelio Corrales, whose polished technique, impressive leaps and charisma made him a scene-stealer.”

In 2010 Mr. Corrales joined Ballet Palm Beach (formerly known as Florida Classical Ballet Theatre) in Palm Beach Gardens. There, he has danced many leading roles including The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Cinderella and Don Quixote. He toured with Ballet Palm beach to Russia, Croatia, and to Cuba.

Many of the roles Rogelio has portrayed are the leads in The Nutcracker, Coppélia, (was praised by the Duluth News Tribune for being “...amazingly expressive and funny”), La Fille Mal Gardee, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sleeping Beauty, La Sylphide, Swan Lake, Giselle, Don Quixote, Le Corsaire, Cinderella and many other classical and contemporary ballets. Rogelio has been featured in famous choreographer’s works such as Allegro Brillante and Tchaikovsky Pas De Deux

by George Balanchine and works by Anthony Tudor.

Rogelio is an extraordinary teacher and coach.

He is able to share his professional experiences with his students and give them that insight that can only by given by someone that has had a career in this profession.

His attention to detail has transformed many young dancers. He’s taught with the School of Minnesota Ballet and is now a master teacher of the elite homeschool program, advanced classes, and competitive group at St. Lucie Ballet. Both Mr. Corrales and his wife Mrs. Lydia Oquendo Corrales are Co Directors and Co Owners of St. Lucie Ballet since 2004. They are excited to announce a new and larger studio space will be opening by Summer of 2018.
