A Letter to Our Readers
A stranger has come to share my room In the house not right in the head, A girl mad as birds… – Dylan Thomas, Love in the Asylum Birds, it seems, are a handy metaphor for craziness – gone cuckoo, crazy as a loon, chicken with its head cut off, that sort of thing. Perfect image for the March cover of a fine natural magazine.
They’re also a good way to know spring has sprung.
The red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin’, swallows return to Capistrano, and flocks of South by Southwesters descend on Austin like grackles returning to the same HEB parking lot every day at dusk. (That’s an inside joke if you’re a SX’er, or just moved here five minutes ago. We love our grackles, just like we love you.) Dylan Thomas, btw, was the Welsh poet who drank himself to death just after his thirty-ninth birthday in 1953 – sort of an early rock star template, and Bob Dylan’s namesake. There’s your literary history lesson, and here’s a tip – don’t park under a tree at an HEB after dusk. –Michael Abedin
THE DREAM GUITAR by Dr. Joe Vitale
I
n late 2014 I challenged guitar builder Tony Nobles to create a visionary Dream Guitar. But I didn’t want it to be my dream guitar. I wanted it to be his dream guitar. Three years later, Tony succeeded. He announced, “There is no guitar like this on the planet.” I’ve now seen it. And played it. And he’s right. It’s a masterpiece.
Let me tell the story behind it.
Tony has been building guitars for almost thirty years. He’s made them for celebrity musicians such as Joe Walsh, Ray Wylie Hubbard, Alejandro Escovedo and others. He’s also made them for lesser known collectors and players, like me. I have a collection of a hundred old and new guitars by great luthiers, known and unknown. Some of them (to name drop) are Bean, Baldwin, Collings, DK, Manzer, Maton, Versoul, D’Angelico, Veillette, Bacce, McElroy, Teye, Oxbow, Huss & Dalton, PRS, Santa Cruz, Fylde, Gigliotti, Trenier, Tesla, Trussart, and Zemaitis, as well as vintage Martin and Gibson models. I’ve also seen impressive private collections, like that of rock icon Melissa Etheridge. Guitars are playable art. And sometimes a good investment. I love them.
And no, you can never have enough.
I suspected a luthier with Tony’s decades of experience might be open to a bold idea. I wondered – what if I acted like a patron saint of the arts and commissioned him to create something visionary from his own mind, not mine? Tony accepted the challenge in 2014. For the next two years he read, thought, dreamed, and wondered. He also came to my home and spent a day examining my own collection, from the Fylde guitar made out of a former Scotch whiskey barrel, to Danelectros with their lipstick pickups, to an Oxford Guitars baritone electric made from gem stones and prehistoric wood. I would also supply Tony with coffee table books about some of the greatest guitars of all time.
6
One book in particular became the resource for what would become the Dream Guitar. The book was a hefty volume called Archtop Guitars: The Journey from Cremona to New York. It displayed artistic photos and inside stories of museum quality guitars from three legends, D’Angelico, D’Aquisto and Monteleone. I had bought it from Rudy Pensa, the author and owner of Rudy’s Music in SOHO in New York. Tony would later tell me, “Whatever I created had to be of the caliber of these guitars in this book, else what was I doing?”
Guitar Monk Mathew Dixon, with whom I’ve made several bestselling instrumental albums, was with me for the unveiling of the Dream Guitar. He said, “Tony has undoubtedly created a masterpiece.” I agree. I play the guitar every single day. It’s already inspired two new songs. And it’s inspired a new instrumental album that Guitar Monk and I have started “allowing” to happen.
Fast forward to October 20, 2016.
I saw that Tony had stretched in making this guitar. Tony told me, “The little push you gave me down the path of uncertainty really did spur some growth.” For me, seeing a man exceed his perceived boundaries and go pass tradition was inspiring and gratifying. My books, music, coaching, mentoring, and presentations are all encouragements to do more and be more, to dream and achieve. Even the album I made with Grammy nominated singer Ruthie Foster, and producer Daniel Barrett, was all about stretching, so much so that we called it Stretch. And my new book that came out in February about strongman feats of strength, titled Anything Is Possible, is all about exceeding what we think is impossible. I feel I succeeded in inspiring a builder to stretch, just as his one-of-a-kind Dream Guitar is now succeeding in inspiring me to create and play new music. Maybe consider… What would you do if you forgot tradition, perceived limits, and everyone’s expectations of what was possible – including your own?
The floating guitar.
The guitar is feather light. I thought of the term floating guitar. Tony says it’s less than five pounds. It sat on my leg as if it was tailor made to fit my knee. Playing it was a surprise, too. Each note has a distinct ring, and a sustain that is clear, rich, and drawn out. The odd shaped frets weren’t even noticeable as anything different as I played, and may have made my chord fingering easier.

After almost two years of research and incubation, Tony showed me a sketch of an idea. It was a light pencil outline on a torn off sheet of butcher paper, but I could see the vision being born. The 1970’s Ibanez “Iceman” guitar inspired Tony. Paul Stanley of KISS made the Iceman electric famous. “I like how that guitar sits well on your knee,” Tony explained. “Builders often forget the guitar has to be comfortable.” (Tony is a player, too, being in the band The Beaumonts.) But that was only the beginning. He knew he wanted an archtop, like those in the Pensa book, and he wanted an electric pickup. My only request when I commissioned this guitar was a Bigsby, or whammy bar. I love them. Otherwise, Tony had a blank canvas to create per inspiration and will. Tony was now off and running. Using sinker log redwood, rare Brazilian Rosewood, and more, he began to carve and build what would become the world’s first Dream Guitar. “I wanted the fret system to be different,” he says, “so I used what’s called True Temperament.” Those are “wiggly” shaped frets that look odd but help the guitar stay in tune better and longer. Things got even more unique when it came to the pickup. “The Austin Sidewinder pickup was made specifically for this guitar by Bob Palmieri of Duneland Labs in Chicago,“ Tony says. “I’ve never heard anything like it.” When I finally saw the Dream Guitar in December 2017, right before Christmas and just days before my sixty-fourth birthday, my jaw dropped. But then I held it.
The Dream Guitar is, well, a dream.

Okay, just to be right up
Sing
front about the whole thing, there’s hardly anything at all in this issue about singing. You could look at it as a reference to Hill Country artist Karen Krumm’s excellent cover art depicting the State Bird of Texas (a prolific songster), as a metaphor for creativity, or as a sleazy attempt to get folks in town for South by Southwest to pick it up because they think it’s a music magazine. What the heck, let’s go with the first one – and if you’re one of those annual visitors from who knows where, kicking off Festival Season hereabouts, keep reading.
This could be a good way to learn something about Texas.
For starters, the March cover bird is indeed the Northern Mockingbird, the by-God official State Bird of Texas, yeeha. (Just to keep things in perspective, it’s also the state bird of Florida, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Mississippi – which, right there, explains a lot about Texas history.) The mockingbird is, well, a bird that mocks. It can imitate about two hundred different birds, along with bugs, frogs, and machinery. Spend an hour or so one morning listening to one practice the same riff over and over, like some kind of demented avian speed freak, and you might well find yourself wondering how well it can imitate the sound of a twelvegauge shotgun – also a very Texas thing. Oh, and the State Headgear of Texas is, of course, the cowboy hat, State Footgear is cowboy boots, and the official State Snack (yes, there is such) is – chips and salsa. (Thought it would be something deep-fried on a stick, didn’t you?) The state Large Mammal is, naturally, the Longhorn Steer, the Small Mammal is the nine-banded armadillo, and the official Flying Mammal is the Mexican free-tailed bat – pretty much a gimme, seeing as how it’s the world’s only flying mammal.
8
Here’s looking at you.
The dirge-like State Song, Texas, Our Texas, ain’t anything to write home about, but the University of Texas fight song is a ditty sung to the tune of I’ve Been Workin’ on the Railroad. Its title, The Eyes of Texas Are Upon You, is pretty much the crux of its message – we’re watching you, compadre, so watch yourself. Threats are sort of an unofficial state hobby in parts of the Lone Star State, but the song was written in 1903 by a UT band member, poking fun at a school president who coined the phrase by plagiarizing Robert E. Lee’s catchy line, “The eyes of the South are upon you.” The eyes of the South didn’t get much of a close-hand look at Texas during the Civil War, although a lot of Southern gentlemen and soldiers of fortune settled the state, and went down swinging in march of 1836 at the Alamo. (Remember that?) Plenty of Texicans fought for the Confederacy, but Texas Governor Sam Houston refused the offer of a Union Army, refused to swear an oath to the Confederacy – and got himself booted out of office. We were busy enough around here at the time with the Comanche, the Hell’s Angels of the Plains tribes, who didn’t discriminate based on uniform color when they picked their targets.
Wanna make out?
Just to end on a singing note, so to speak, the question of why birds sit around running through the same riff over and over until they drive you crazy was raised by a comic at SXSW awhile back. Turns out, he discovered, it’s males repeating a mating call – which, he said, meant some guy bird is sitting outside his bedroom window for hours, saying (in G-rated terms), Wanna make out? Wanna make out? Wanna make out? And that there’s the real State Hobby of Texas.

ALTAR YOUR TEMPLE by Folade Speaks March brings Spring, and an altar is an auspicious way to offer gratitude, deepen Spirit connection, and welcome beginnings. Altar and shrine are often used interchangeably, but there’s a difference – shrines are sacred spaces often consecrated to a specific deity or transitioned person. Altars are more general spaces to pray and meditate, with broader arrangements. Spacewalk through your home with a lit candle or smudge, listen to where you’re called. The right space will be charged with energy, or you’ll hear a guide whisper, here. Place it in a neatly cared for closet, corner, or area away from traffic and company. Unless you’re making a shrine for a love deity, avoid bedrooms – that’s personal space. Cleanse and bless the area with sage or prayer, put down a cloth or stand, smudge and bless purchased items before use. Rosemary purifies altar contents – essential oil in spring water, or rosemary boiled in water. It’s helpful to include at least one representation of each element as a foundation – Fire, Water, Earth, Air.
Fire communicates invitations to Spirit for guidance.
A white tea light or seven-day candle, unscented, is a good start. (Immediately remove candles that burn completely.) Light daily, extinguish flames before bed and leaving the house. If you don’t have a snuffer and blow out flames, say thank you or a prayer as you do. Flame speaks to your Spirit Circle, so photos of ancestors can summon your kindred. Don’t place photos of living people on an altar – if all you have is a coveted photo of a transitioned loved one with someone still on this plane, make a copy and cut or crop out the living person.
Water contains goodness drawn by flame, deflecting adverse energies.
A frequently freshened vessel of water keeps energy around the altar high. (Use new white or clear dishes, not dishes you’ve eaten on, except heirlooms from ancestors in your bloodline.) Have a shrine for a certain deity or ancestor? Add a few drops of scents, essential oils, or petals of flowers they liked.
Flowers and crystals represent Earth.
Personal favorites are white and yellow flowers, roses, and irises – one of my grandmother’s favorites she grew in her yard, an offering to her. Bring soil from a sacred or peaceful place you frequent, but leave something in return. Crystals are living Earth energies. I may use one, usually quartz, or many, changing as personal seasons change. Favorites are crystals on the Breastplate of the High Priest, quartz, rose quartz, angel wing calcite, chrysocolla, fossils, rough peridot to boost love and compassion, tangerine quartz or pyrite over New Moon intention letters. Don’t overdo it, and cleanse crystals and change them as needs change.
Incense can be an offering of Air.
Copal, frankincense, myrrh, sandalwood are divine picks. Dragon’s Blood cleanses the area, deflecting unwanted spirits and energies. You might be called, as you grow, to add items. You don’t need much, and it’s essential to take good care of the space and clear it weekly, preferably the same day. (New and Full Moons are appropriate times to change sacred space.) Add food and favorite things as offerings to ancestors and higher powers in your Spirit Circle, do research to prevent contrasting energies or images of deities who don’t work well together. A shrine or altar is a radial point for your Spiritual practice. You’ll find it’s a powerful tool for manifesting, spirit communication, and protection.

OF A The Art of
FEATHER Karen Krumm
Good writers write about what they know, and good artists create artwork based on what they see, either in their mind’s eye or their environment.
Sky People.
Austin-area artist Karen Krumm lives in Dripping Springs, and sees the natural landscape and critters of the Hill Country – especially birds, native species and those just passing through. “I started noticing them all the time, everywhere, and realized I should be painting them.” The Native tribes called them Sky People, creatures of the air living close to Spirit, and they make their way into her spiritually oriented artwork as well. Karen’s work was the Judge’s Choice selection in the two-day Austin Art Business Summit in October, chosen to appear on the cover of Austin All Natural. Designed to help visual artists become creative entrepreneurs and turn their art into a business, it was co-sponsored by Austin’s Creative Arts Society, with over forty artists hosted by Art Society President and AAN cover designer Leslie Kell.

F IGHTING BACK Self defense training for women
by Michael Abedin Don’t think history repeats itself? Just shy of fifty years ago, we were mired in a foreign guerrilla war, a president was getting in over his head, young people were angry with politicians, politicians were angry with the press, and a powerful women’s movement was cranking up. The Women’s Liberation movement broke traditional stereotypes of mothers and housewives as women made their way, often forcibly, into a man’s world. Turns out boys will be boys, though, and a couple of generations later, there’s a backlash against boys disguised as men not doing a very good job of keeping their hands – and other parts – to themselves. The Me Too movement has exposed some nasty truths, one of them being that harassment and attacks on women – physical, mental, and emotional – often as not come from someone known or even close to them. The nuances of this are way too complex to address in a short article, but there is one thing that can be addressed.
Women can learn to fight back.
Learning self-defense is a tricky thing with no easy short cuts, and trickier still for women and girls who, in most cases, will be defending themselves against men, usually bigger, stronger, and more accustomed to using violence as a tool. Defending yourself against domestic or workplace violence can be a dangerous and complicated process, but learning to defend yourself against random harassment or attacks from strangers is a learnable skill. Any form of physical training that builds strength, confidence, and awareness is a good step towards building a shield against aggression. Reputable martial arts or weapons training, however, can teach specific ways to prevent attacks – and fight back.
Reputable is the key word.
There’s a plethora of programs out there, and anyone, regardless of age or gender, should carefully investigate any long-term self-defense or martial arts program before signup, particularly if they’ve already been attacked. A conference with the person in charge, watching some classes, or a short introductory lesson or class is the best approach. Drawbacks in any program will be greatly magnified when you start looking at quickie self-defense classes. There are no quick and easy tricks guaranteed to work. Anyone who tells you that is quite possibly putting you in jeopardy. There are, however, simple techniques that can be applied with a minimum of training, but picking them up in an hour class one Saturday afternoon and being able to use them effectively are two different things. You might get lucky and it might work – but as any gambler will tell you about luck, it’s a good idea to hedge your bets.
Things to look for in a self-defense course:
• A professional, experienced instructor. • Mental techniques for awareness, confidence, and strategy. • Physical techniques that are simple and easy to apply, with backup options. • Time to practice those techniques in class, under the instructor’s supervision. • A series of classes, unless a single session is billed as an introduction to encourage further study. • Options and/or recommendations for continued training. • A little knowledge can be a dangerous thing, but a little practice, skill, and competent instruction can change your life – and maybe save it.
Austin All Natural is offering a three-session self-defense class for women Thursday evenings April 5, 12, and 19, 7-9:30pm, taught by Michael Abedin, fifth-degree black belt in Kenpo Karate and a professional martial arts instructor and competitor for forty-five years. The Near
Death Experiencer
Why do they push so hard?
by Pat Johnson What is it that drives near death experiencers to be so persistent about telling their stories? It seems like every week a new book is coming out that recounts a near death experience, with near death experiencers constantly popping up on television talk shows. You hear them on radio talk shows, and their stories can be found all over social media. These experiencers seem to be obsessed with sharing their experience. Many near death experiencers say they feel obligated and duty bound to share their experience and what they’ve taught them. Some even describe it as being pushed into uncomfortable situations they don’t want to be in, but can’t get out of.
the people that heard it. In the process of sharing, I realized my story does not really belong to me, but to God – and it’s meant to be shared. It has inspired people, stimulated discussion, and has often resulted in a rejuvenated relationship with God. It has lessened people’s fear of death, and increased their passion for living a full and meaningful life. Truly, God does not give us a lamp so we can hide it under a basket or a bed. He gives each of us a lamp so we may give light to the world. Light always dissipates the emptiness of darkness. Ultimately, I felt that if the reading of my story could even bring one person closer to God, it would be worth the writing.
It’s a burden for a lot of experiencers.
Howard Storm, another near death experiencer whose story has been written about in My Descent Into Death: A Second Chance at Life, was told in his NDE, Come back and love the one you are with, and you can change the world. Howard, at the time of his NDE, was a college professor and committed atheist. He’s now a pastor, and has loved the ones he is with since 1985. He has dedicated his life to sharing the messages of his experience. Crystal McVea is another example of dedication to sharing the lessons of her near death experience. In Crystal’s book
Dr. Mary Neal, a near death experiencer who almost met her fate in a kayaking accident, describes her feelings about it. One of several reasons for my return to Earth was to tell my story, and help people find their way back to God. During my initial recovery, I was invited to tell my story with small groups in my community, and these people shared my story with friends and family. As it was spread to many parts of the country, I was often told of the profound impact my story made on the lives of
14
The recurring message.
Chasing Heaven, What Dying Taught Me About Living she explains that heaven is our real home, but we’re still meant to have meaningful lives full of passion and purpose right here on Earth. She’s driven to share the messages she received – not about dying, but what she learned about living. This is a recurring message of near-deathers that’s often downplayed. Jeff Olsen’s experience of life, death, and loss is enough to make anyone want to retract and go into survival mode. Not in Olsen’s case. After a horrendous car wreck that took the lives of his young son and wife, and one of his legs, Olsen came back from his NDE to write a bestselling book, start an organization – @one – that promotes love and unity, and become an internationally recognized event promoter and speaker. While recovering in the hospital after his accident, he met another patient who had been paralyzed, also by a car wreck. This was a turning point for him, as he says about the meeting. My heart went out to this man from my distant past… it felt better, and far healthier, to hurt for someone else for a change. It was a huge epiphany for me that day in the gym. I had been so preoccupied by my own battles that I hadn’t even considered anyone else’s. I began to ask doctors, nurses, visitors, and other patients how they were doing, how their day was – and then really listened. I spoke to my family differently and addressed their pain and loss over what had happened. I discovered a big part of my pain could be swallowed up in kindness of others. By taking a genuine interest beyond my own struggles, and investing in someone else, my struggles actually diminished. As Jeff Olsen said, after his NDE he had other new revelations and insights. This is universal to all near death experiencers. After people have had an NDE, they continue to gain new and different insights and understandings – as though the actual incident of having an NDE is just the beginning of the journey for the experiencer.

The experience is more about a journey than it is a moment.
Other than the moment of the NDE, the journey of life is the same for experiencers and non-experiencers alike. The experiencer comes back to face all the distractions and influences of the world that we all do – they may have some deeper understandings of our connection to God and each other, but they continue to struggle with the emotional turmoil that we do. Sometimes, because of this new awareness, their struggles can be harder, as this world tries to pull them away from the Divine. The Wisdom of the Near Death Experience, March 23-25 at Austin’s Omni Hotel South Park, features the near death experiencers in this article and thirteen other speakers, including Jeffery Long, M.D., Curtis Childs, Robing Landsong, Tanaaz Chubb, Lisa Smartt, John Burke, Pam Kircher, M.D., David Drapela, Mathew Debow, Kathy Burke, Jody Long, Michael Quinn, and Cherie Aimee. by Heather Wolfe It’s common to hear about the Five Elements these days, much more than even a few years ago. It’s one of those things that seems, after centuries of tradition, to catch on overnight. They have not traditionally been included in Reiki initiations, but are now often incorporated into that stream of energy healing, along with many others, as a way of bringing expanded awareness to the Earth and her cycles, as well as our own rhythms and surroundings. It’s an exciting form of learning, bringing more opportunity for ceremony and community, and in energy medicine this knowledge helps with diagnosis and treatment. There can be confusion around the Elements, however, as different paths name and work with them differently. Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine use Earth, Fire, Water, Metal (or Air) and Wood. Ayurvedic Medicine, Celtic Ways, and the Yogic Path use Earth, Fire, Water, Air and Ether. Native Americans use Earth, Fire, Water, and Air and bring in the Four Directions, along with Above, Below, and Center (Mother Earth, Father Sky, and Self as Center).

Which path to follow, which path to explore?
You will find derivations of this elsewhere, and if you look into following any of the Elements for healing, you’ll find their pathways follow varied directions. However, as in religions, all paths at their core lead to the One Truth. Follow your heart and your gut, and listen to your inner voice and to outer signs. It’s been said there are no mistakes, just a different way of learning – and experience becomes wisdom. As a seeker who loves to learn about many paths, when Polarity Therapy came my way it was my next path of learning – a directed, yet flowing and expanded synthesis based on the Five Elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Formulated by Dr. Randolph Stone, DO, ND, it resonated with my native Celtic blood.
The Elements are -- they just are – however you experience them.
The Hathors, of Egyptian fame, claim there is an Energetic Being for each Element, based on the Hathor Material by Tom Kenyon and Virginia Essene. Rather like calling in the directions in the Native American way, this can make them seem more real, and closer to us – and they are. They are to be called upon, and available to us for enhancing our lives. They invite us to co-create with them for the balancing of this planet, and beyond. Polarity Therapy is a holistic, spiritually-oriented system of health care based on balancing the Elements in our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual bodies, corresponding to the chakra system and utilizing universal principles of attraction, repulsion, and neutrality – hence, polarity. Central to this is body and energy work – a different session to balance each element, with the CranioSacral system at the core, and using the Ether Element, from which all other Elements originate.
I leave you with this Gaelic verse.
It sends blessings to you from the Elements, in a quiet and deep way. Deep peace of the running Wave to you. Deep peace of the flowing Air to you. Deep peace of the quiet Earth to you. Deep peace of the shining Stars to you Deep peace of the infinite Peace to you. THE ENNEAGRAM The Personality Mirror
by Amberlea Shelton Here I am, again, with these patterns and masks clinging tightly to my skin. I can barely breathe. If I’m not constantly doing, thinking, feeling, I will lose control. I am afraid to let go, to be, to allow the mask to drop away. What if I’m not accepted, not loved – unseen, isolated, disconnected. How did I end up here again? Is this really all there is to life? At times, life can feel meaningless, confusing, and overwhelming. You feel stuck, anxious, depressed. You may start to wonder who you are, and why you keep falling into these patterns over and over.
Personality is the way we express ourselves as individuals, but at times, we can get stuck in automatic thoughts and beliefs. Challenges arise when your point of view becomes rigid and you get stuck in mindless habits. By working with the Enneagram you develop a deeper understanding of others, and learn alternatives to our own patterns of behavior. You can break free from outdated coping strategies and begin to see life from a broader point of view. By discovering these unconscious patterns, you can lead a more fulfilling life, enjoy healthier relationships, and connect to your true authentic self.
Light the path and empower choice.
Follow the roots into yourself.
The Enneagram shines light on your gifts, and your shadows. Instead of allowing the ego to work in the shadow of the unconscious, where it creates drama, the Enneagram shows you what’s working underneath, allowing you to observe motivations and manipulations within yourself that keep you from what you truly desire. When you uncover the shadow self and shine a light into the dark corners of your personality, you give yourself a powerful gift – the ability to choose. You get to decide, consciously, if and when you want to put on the mask. Instead of the personality controlling your spirit, you take back the compass and allow your soul to return to its rightful place as your wise inner guide.
This is me – this is my personality.

I need a map pointing to the center of myself, where I can go back to who I was when I started. See with new eyes, new awareness, new experience. Tabula rasa, the blank slate. I need a lantern, a compass, a way to untangle the webs of unhealthy thinking and doing I have created. As children, we are whole – our psyches have not been split into all the pieces that become ego, personality, habit. Life experiences move in quickly and we believe the only way to be loved or feel worthy and safe is to put on a mask. As we grow into adults, the mask hardens and seals, and we forget it is a mask at all.
The Enneagram (ANY-a-gram) is a powerful instrument for personal transformation, a map showing how to start this journey into the self. It stems from the Greek words Ennea (the number nine) and grammos (symbol). The nine-pointed Enneagram symbol represents nine distinct strategies for relating to the self, others, and the world. It is a tool to begin to understand why we act, think, feel, and behave the way we do, a mirror for consciousness, revealing how we have become falsely identified with particular forms. It’s a compass, a way to illumine the personality and the constructs of the ego. The Enneagram teaches that early in life we learned to feel safe, and to cope with our family situations and personal circumstances, by developing a strategy based on our natural talents and abilities. Each Enneagram type has a different pattern of thinking, feeling, and acting that arises from a deeper inner motivation or worldview. We all share common experiences, while also being unique individuals. This tool is not used to put us in a box, but instead gives us an awareness of the box we see the world through.

AFTER THE COLORS FADE by Christina Allen The main principle behind shamanic healing is that our physical, mental, and emotional realities are orchestrated by our multidimensional, spiritual selves. This self carries our true capacity, but also carries the imprints from unresolved wounds, from this lifetime to the ancient past, in shadow. When our minds don’t know how to process hurtful events they become imprinted on our souls, directing the way our lives unfold at the physical. Once our multidimensional selves heal, our bodies and minds can finally express our true capacity. Shamanic healers can help us shift, grow, and heal by connecting with our multidimensional selves. They are distinct in their capacity to bridge the physical and spiritual domains, aiding in this evolutionary process. One main tenant of shamanic healing is the client must be put in a trance state, to let go of wounds locked into the fear-based mind. Only in trance will the mind let go of its defenses enough to effect change.
There are many different kinds of shamans, many ways to achieve trance states.
Some tribes use drumming, dancing, others use breath work. Others use psychotropic plant medicines. While methods vary from tribe to tribe, shamanic healers share in common the idea that dysfunctional physical reality is a projection of imbalances in our spiritual selves. Many people turn to shamanic healing when allopathic approaches to medicine fail them. One mode that’s recently become popular is psychedelic plant substances, used originally by jungle shamans of the Amazon. Some with addictions and PTSD are having great success using these methods, which allow someone to transcend wounded perceptions of the world and access their spiritual self, in a healed state. Psychedelic ceremonial circles break down barriers in the mind and heart, reminding people of their infinite spiritual nature, allowing them to reset and rewire. But because they can also kick up shadow elements buried deep in our psyches – our deepest fears, our competitive background agendas, our relentless negative voices – they’re not for everyone.
18
In fact, integration circles often follow plant medicine ceremonies to help people integrate their experiences. A great way of grounding your plant medicine experiences and embracing that magic in your everyday life is studying Andean shamanism. Sitting at very high elevations on Peruvian mountains, where the air is thin, Andean shamans, or paquos, have mastered the art of moving between the physical and the energetic domains, at will.
The Gatekeeper.
From a young age, Andean paquos learn how to cultivate relationships with the spiritual domain to shift physical realities, but to do so they must establish a balance between intellect and spirit. This is true of any shamanic tradition – intellect is the gatekeeper of thought and shadow. When intellect is firmly in charge, spiritual and shadow selves that make us who we are become limited in how they’re heard or expressed. Intellect is defined by linear time, what’s happened to us and what hasn’t. Stepping onto the shamanic path means we do personal work that breaks us free of these constraints. Beyond these limited definitions of self, we learn we’re infinite and can merge with the energetic – or spiritual – domains at will. This is the path of the paquo, making sacred connections between themselves, nature, and spiritual domains, weaving the fabric of creation in a conscious way, much as a spider weaves her web. Reaching into the infinite, connecting directly with the source energy, they manifest new worlds at the physical. They call this dreaming their worlds into being. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). EMFS AND AUTISM Keeping your child off the A-List by Michael Abedin Pregnant? Planning on it? Have a newborn or young child? Welcome to the next chapter in your life, and the first chapter in the life of a brand-new, factory fresh human being, one dependent on you for quite some time. First order of business? Keep them safe, even before they pop out of the oven. Everything taken in physically, mentally, emotionally – from nutrients to secondhand smoke to emotional stress – becomes a part of them. A lot of templates are set in that first nine months in their cozy environment, and the first few after their debut. Not all of them are good.
The A list.
There’s a Top Three List of disorders that, in recent decades, have seen an unprecedented rise, but it’s not an A-list you want your child on – Asthma, ADHD, and Autism. Some researchers say the rise in autism almost exactly matches the spike in something else – mobile phone and WiFi use. Dipping a toe into the waters of a cause for autism is dangerous business. Go on record that vaccines or glyphosate cause autism, and you’ll attract more professional trolls than a presidential race. In truth, trying to isolate a single cause or cure for conditions like autism, ADHD, asthma, even cancer, is based on old-school notions that every health problem has a single cause that can be wiped out with the right pharmaceutical silver bullet. In actual fact, any disorder, especially one involving the complex network of the brain and nervous system, is the result of a perfect storm of factors that differs from one individual to the next – and there’s one thing most storms have in common.
Lightning striking, again and again.
There’s a school of thought that lightning continually striking Earth’s primeval seas altered a soup of organic chemicals, creating amino acids that became the basis for life-forming DNA strands. In the same way, long, steady exposure to electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs) could be the catalyst that tips a combination of factors – diet, genetics, environment – over the edge, into mutations that result in neurodevelopmental disorders. Some researchers have come right out and stated EMFs are a main cause of autism, the match that lights the fuse. Medical gadfly Dr. Joseph Mercola is one, as is Austin-area researcher Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter.
20
With an extensive background in pediatrics, neurology, physics, and sleep medicine, Ritter has done extensive research on EMFs, coming to the conclusion that they might well be the main culprit in the development of autism. “There’s plenty of research out there to support the idea that, as mobile phone use and homes wired for WiFi grows, so does the incidence of autism.” One study has shown EMFs disrupt the balance of calcium, potassium, and lithium ions in cell structures, elements crucial to mental and emotional stability and brain function. Others suggest EMF exposure binds toxic heavy metals into cell structures, undermining both the body’s ability to flush them out, and any therapies designed to do so. Since the human brain and nervous system operates through electrical impulses, constant exposure to even low levels of outside electromagnetic frequencies might alter that entire system, resulting in a constant fight or flight scenario that keeps the body’s immune and digestive systems and inflammatory response on 24/7 high alert. Inflammation is now acknowledged to be a main factor in, well, just about everything – including physiological dysfunctions that can lead to neurodevelopmental disorders.
All that is hard enough on an adult system.
It’s harder still on the developing brain and nervous system of a child – or a fetus. Completely eliminating EMF’s from a modern lifestyle is tricky biz, but Ritter recommends taking what steps you can, and has developed a testing and remediation protocol for households, and a protective mobile phone covering for when phones absolutely must be kept near a child or a pregnant woman. If nothing else, anecdotal evidence shows removing or lessening the constant stress of EMF exposure makes dealing with autism an easier task – and it’s the responsibility of anyone taking on the care of a new person to investigate every aspect of their welfare. Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter of EMF Knights will speak and answer questions at the Holistic Life Workshop and Fair, April 28, 11am-4pm, 1108 S. 8th. EMF Knights offers high-quality protective cell phone covers and free consultations on expert EMF testing and remediation. (512) 436-6768, www.EMFKnights.net
LIVER CLEANSING The 3D Spring Cleaning Tune-up by Melissa Russ-Santiago ND Any idea how your liver works, where you can find it, or how to keep it in tip-top shape? The truth is, most people know more about how to care for their car then they do their body. So, let’s focus on a vital component of caring for your body – detoxification. If you read many health magazines or health-related articles on the Internet, you’re bound to run across information about internal cleansing. We live in a toxic world, bombarded with industrial run-off, artificial chemicals in food, cigarette smoke, pesticides, and prescription and OTC drugs. What’s the answer? Here are a few ways to clean your filter (the liver), tune up your engine (the gut), and improve over-all performance (increased sleep, energy, and immune function). Gut cleanse. Following a clean eating regimen for a period of days (ten to twenty-one, even forty) takes stress off the digestive tract and improves elimination. Fresh vegetable juicing, veggie based broths, and pure water are the focus. Burning pure fuel in the tank improves metabolism, allowing the body to move toxic residue that’s built up over time. A series of enemas and/or colonics assist in further purging of the gut, and speed up the process – as we like to say, “Better out than in.” Exercise. A physically active lifestyle stimulates your organs to flush out toxins, improves circulation, digestion, and elimination, and reduces stress. Move your body – it doesn’t have to be complicated. Walk, bike, swim, dance, stretch – they’re all good. Just pick one, and start today. Liver detox. We suggest a protocol of herbal supplements taken several times daily throughout the cleanse, to prompt your liver to purge. Accompanied by lymphatic and kidney support, this is an effective way to clean the liver, giving it the tune-up it so desperately needs.
Stirring up your dimensions.
As Dr. Gwieneverea Brandon, MD, points out, a liver cleanse, typically five to twenty-one days, induces purging of stored fats, old cholesterol deposits, poisons, drug residues, and toxic waste. Probably nothing else, including a colon detox, makes a greater difference in your health. When you’re addressing the physical body and organs, there’s an emotional and spiritual component involved. We’re 3-D beings, so what gets stirred up in one dimension gets stirred up in all of them. Specifically, the liver represents anger and primitive emotions. If you have a tendency to be a complainer or a fault finder, be aware that by purging the physical liver, you may also be faced with repressed anger or old, unaddressed feelings that causing you distress. Take this time to focus on these feelings, and allow them to surface. Writing about your experiences, maybe seeking a coach to walk you through them , may help you heal and recover. Maybe you have a goal to lose a pound or two, maybe you need a break from the hectic party life, or maybe you just feel like it’s time to purge the grime from your filter. Whatever your goal, a professional healthcare practitioner can assist you in meeting it – you’ll stand a much better chance of achieving your goals than you will doing it by yourself. Opus Anti-Aging and Wellness is kicking off a Spring Cleaning detox, beginning March 1. Gwieneverea Brandon MD, and Melissa Russ-Santiago ND, of Opus Anti-Aging and Wellness, practice integrative medicine combining mainstream and natural healthcare, including detox prgrams, chelation, IV vitamins, pain management, aesthetics, nutrition, and medical testing. ACID OR ALKALINE? Understanding your body’s pH by Marge Captain The pH factor is a measure of acidity or alkalinity of the body. The lower the pH number, the more acidic the body is. A higher pH number means it’s more more alkaline. A healthy pH reading is when saliva pH is in the range of 6.5 to 6.8, and urine pH is 6.0 to 7.0. Poor diet, stress, dehydration, exposure to chemicals in your environment and your food, and lack of exercise are some of the ways your body’s pH can become unbalanced. When it’s unbalanced, you become more susceptible to illness – like the recent round of flu.
High acidity.
Most people who have an unbalanced pH are overly acidic. When you’re acidic, it forces the body to borrow minerals, including calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium, from vital organs and bones to buffer the acid and safely remove it from our bodies. Over time, this process can weaken the organs and contribute to a number of diseases, including osteoporosis.
High alkalinity.
Although there’s a popular misconception that the more alkaline you are, the better, you can overdo it. The person whose body is highly alkaline is, ironically, less capable of excreting acids. High alkalinity could be the result of exposure to alkaline chemicals, and drugs such as antacids.
Drinking alkalized water.
There are a number of ways to keep your body in the best pH range, including researching food choices based on acid or alkaline producing properties, and following general principles of good health. Drinking plenty of alkalized water is one of the easiest ways to assist the process. Alkalized water helps you balance your body’s pH by ionization, which results in positive and negative charged molecules increasing the alkaline minerals in the body. These work as buffers to reduce acidity in the blood. It also provides a powerful antioxidant effect by providing extra electrons that neutralize free radicals (an oxygen molecule which is missing one electron). Free radical damage can cause disease and early aging. It increases blood oxygenation, which gives you energy and increased mental alertness. It increases hydration. Ionized water has a smaller molecular cluster size than conventional tap water, and smaller water clusters are much more hydrating. To try FREE alkalized water call Margie Captain, a hydration specialist in alkalized antioxidant water. Call for information at (512) 627-3585 or (512) 415-7669.

Dear Ashtara:
Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, My heart is incredibly heavy right now. When will I meet someone who will treat me with respect and kindness; someone who actually wants to be with me? H.T., 44, Austin, TX Dear H.T., It looks like this year is a good one for romance. Therefore, look your best, be charming, delightful, and fun, and success will follow. Eventually you will be married and have a wonderful life. Until then, be all that you can be every day and the universe will be your supply. A new relationship will happen when you are ready. Your highest teacher is Ashtar. Your angel is Gabriel. Dear Ashtara, After dedicating my life to spiritual healing work and therapy, I’ve hit a rut. I despise my job, I’m depressed and I suffer from chronic fatigue. I know I need to change something, but I feel I’ve even lost interest in my creative endeavors. Any message would be appreciated. With love, Clara, 35 Dear Clara, You were born to be a medical doctor or a holistic practitioner, as well as an artist and architect. You also could be a wonderful lawyer. And, it looks like you will become a lawyer. And you also will overcome your grief when you get another profession. In your life you will own and operate a small business that you develop. You will also change what you do seven times in this lifetime. Your high teacher is Ashtar and your angel is Michael. Dear Ashtara, I am scared about the path that I am on that I have been trying to accomplish for many years. It is in real estate, and hopefully will make me more available to my sculpture and writing. Please let me know if this is a good path, if it will work, and any insights. Thank you. Kath, 37, San Antonio, TX
26
Dear Kath, You were born to be an actress, Broadway, drama, comedy, director, producer and all around artist. Real estate is a handy thing because you can fall back on it if times get tough as long as you keep your license going. One day you will become an author. You will also help direct a motion picture. Your high teacher is Metatron and your angel is Uriel. Dear Ashtara, I have been going through a painful divorce and didn’t get a good settlement (I am receiving less than the state regulated twenty percent of my ex’s income as child support). Right now, I really need the money as things have gotten very difficult. I have to take my ex back to court to try get the regulated twenty percent amount. I also want to get the right to make the decisions for my children’s school and psychiatric care. Will I be successful when I take my ex back to court? Heartfield, 46, Austin, TX Dear Heartfield, As far as your ex-husband, just give it a little bit of time and things will smooth out. Don’t be distant and don’t worry because things will definitely turn around. You will be successful in taking him back to court. Also, it looks like he wants the kids to be happy where they are going to school, and for them to help make the choice. Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels. She is also a Reiki Master Teacher, Seichim Reiki Master Teacher, Sound Current Healing Master Teacher, Embodiment Master Teacher, and Teacher of the Light.
