Katy Dog Suites Their home away from home
There’s something new developing in your own backyard. In a few brief words with Steve Livingston, co-owner of Agave Rio, we questioned what was taking place. WE HAVE NOTICED THAT THERE HAVE BEEN QUITE A FEW CHANGES OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF YEARS AND WONDERED IF THERE WAS ONE DRIVING FORCE THAT HAS GUIDED THESE CHANGES? Yes. My business partner, Shelton Craig, bought the property for his mom in the mid 90's and when it was her home, we had countless birthday parties, engagement celebrations and holiday gatherings there. Each one rich with the joyful experience of good friends, beautiful scenery and the best TEX-MEX food this side of the Pecos! His wife Karina’s Mexican heritage introduced me to flavors from south of the border that I didn’t know existed. Simple ingredients like lime juice, garlic, chili powder, cumin and hot peppers, mixed to perfection to create mouthwatering fajitas, tamales, enchiladas and charro beans that I can honestly say are now a staple in my own home. Combine this amazing food with the patio oasis that is now Agave Rio and you’ll know that the driving force has always been our burning desire to share our experience with the community! WHY NOW? In the beginning, we brought in a chef based on his experience and his ties to the Katy community, thinking he would help us to develop a restaurant that the public would want. He had worked primarily in fine dining establishments, which is his niche, so naturally that is the direction he took us. Although our hearts were rooted in the Spanish culture, we were excited to have an establishment of such grandeur close to home and thought the neighborhood would be as well. We soon learned that the Katy community wanted something a little different. We realized many people are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Harvey yet looking for a great night out without compromising quality. So, with that in mind, we have recently brought in Frank Ramirez as our General Manager.
2 / KATY TODAY /MARCH 2018
WHAT DOES THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER OFFER THAT THE OTHERS DIDN’T? Frank, a native of Puerto Vallarta, has more than 30 years of experience in the restaurant industry, and shares our original burning desire to bring Katy residents “the experience” … our vision of providing a fun casual atmosphere tied to a great menu at affordable prices! Frank has teamed with our Chef to create a menu that will keep our patrons coming back again and again so they can try it all. Entrées such as our new Tampiquena, an 8oz New York Sirloin steak served with two cheese enchiladas, rice, (Karina’s famous) charro beans, Pico de Gallo, guacamole and flour tortillas. Or our Alambres, 3 skewers of shrimp, beef and chicken basted with chimichurri sauce then charbroiled and served with grilled vegetables. SO, WHAT COULD SOMEONE EXPECT TO FIND WHEN THEY COME TO AGAVE RIO? They can expect great Tex-Mex food, hands down the best salsa this side of the Pecos, excellent margaritas, craft cocktails, a nice selection of beer and wine. They will also experience our main dining room, accented with handcrafted, cool architectural features, and the best patio in Texas that highlights a Texas-sized playground for the kids and live music from local entertainers on the main stage every Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. We also offer Mercado Days every first and third Saturday of the month where we seek to honor the family-style roots of Katy and support local artisans and small cottage businesses by providing the best possible homemade crafts and products, sold by the very individuals that produce them.
It’s always been our desire to create a place where the residents of Katy would love enough to think it’s their home too. A place to bring the family and loved ones for Sunday brunch, a birthday or anniversary celebration, or simply to kick back, relax and hang out with friends, while watching the stars come out at night! This is your gathering place and we cannot wait to see you!

Katy Dog Suites One of the largest facilities with luxury suites has made its way to the Katy area completing construction late last year. These suites are not meant to offer state-of-the-art care for humans. Instead offering indoor suites with their own individual outdoor grassed backyard, allowing for a more natural environment for dogs. Co-owner Malcolm Macaulay believes Katy Dog Suites will revolutionize the way dogs are boarded in the future. “Most boarding facilities are concrete, and the dogs don’t have 24 hour access to a grassed outdoor area like we do,” Macaulay said. “The inside of the suite is home like and it is air conditioned in summer and heated in the winter months.” The Katy location has completed 320 suites and sits on 20 acres located at 28785 Clay Road. The owners of Woodlands Dog Suites in Magnolia have teamed up with the owners of the luxury home and commercial builders Horizon Development and Construction to build one of the largest boarding facilities in the United States in Katy. The idea for Katy Dog Suites is based on many designs that originated in Australia. “My business partner went to 20 different facilities in Australia and broke down what makes those facilities stand out above the rest,” Macaulay said. “He picked the finest innovations and made this facility.” Their first facility in The Woodlands has 160 kennel suites, with each suite also having their own grass yard. “We want to be able to accommodate the needs of the public during peak periods in a comfortable environment for their dogs,” Macaulay said. The plan is to continue to plant as many additional trees as possible on the property to add to the number of trees already there (some of the individual outdoor yards have their own tree) and the facility is set away from the road for more safety and privacy for the dogs.
8 / Katy Today /March 2018
The complete layout of the facility has been designed for dogs, with only 10 suites per air-conditioned building, and each suite has its own window and easy-out dog door that allows all guests to go into their backyard whenever they want. There are over 20 large play areas that can accommodate individual or group playtime. The number of buildings and play areas allow dogs to be separated due to size and temperament. Katy Dog Suites does not charge extra for playtime, feeding or medicating, but does for bathing. Standard suites are priced at $35 for one guest. The larger suites are priced at $55 for one guest. For either size, additional pets from the same family are charged at $20 each. Daycare is available for $20 per day, with additional dogs from the same family only an additional $10 each. Another added feature is that experienced managers live on site, so flexible pick-up and drop off are allowed by appointment. Matt and Alicia Segari are the experienced co-managers at the Katy Dog Suites and bring more than 12 years of experience in running dog facilities. “We are excited able being a part of this facility,” Matt Segari said. “We love our guests and make sure the animals are taken care with lots of individual attention,” said Alicia Segari. “The large size of the facility has enabled us to help many dog rescue groups either for long term boarding or boarding before transportation to out-of-state adoptions, we love making a positive difference to the lives of dogs.” “These are luxury dog suites and these dogs will have a lot more freedom and will have their own grass. Most people associate kennels with having a bad environment for the dogs and you won’t have that at Katy Dog Suites,” Macaulay said.

Katy resident fights breast cancer with proper tools, support Elsie Tarbell rings the bell at M.D. Anderson showing that she is finished with cancer treatments.
By Valerie Sweeten When breast cancer strikes, there are many emotions and issues to deal with, but with the proper tools and support, peace of mind can be around the corner. With a diagnosis of Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC), it can be more challenging simply because of the way the disease presents itself. According to NationalBreastCancer. org, IBC is an aggressive and fast-growing breast cancer in which cancer cells infiltrate the skin and lymph vessels of the breast. It often produces no distinct tumor or lump that can be felt and isolated within the breast. When the lymph vessels become blocked by the breast cancer cells, symptoms begin to appear. Katy resident Elsie Tarbell began fighting Stage 4 IBC in January 2010 after finding a lump and getting confirmation with a mammogram. Fast forward eight years later to today, and Tarbell continues to fight with treatment. Even though Tarbell, 78, is “feeling good with no pain,” she still stays on top of the latest news, developments and treatments for IBC. As a highly informed reader, Tarbell has found even more help with the outreach from The Inflammatory Breast Cancer Network Foundation, founded by Terry Arnold, a Friendswood resident who also has faced IBC. Their Facebook page, www.facebook.com/talkibc, has women from all over and engages conversations on recovery, medicines, alternative treatments and more. Tarbell has been inspired by the women talking about their IBC experiences. “When you have questions, it’s really good. Other people respond. Sometimes you get some really interesting
information. I have neuropathy and like using different things. That’s how I found out about Magnesium,” she said. Arnold herself was diagnosed at the age of 49 in August 2007 with a highly fatal diagnosis. Today, she’s thriving as a “walking miracle.” She founded the IBC Network Foundation simply because she wanted more information on this “niche cancer” for people just like Tarbell. “I was given a few months to live and ended up at M.D. Anderson. There was almost no research. I started a support group, and now it’s all around the world. It’s all grass roots and volunteer run. This is a young woman’s disease and can be very challenging. It’s very important to get quality education so people can access the care they need,” said Arnold, who had no history of cancer in her family tree. In the five years, Arnold founded the foundation, almost $1 million has been put into research. They’ve also paired with a sister charity in the UK funding research as well. Most importantly is that women communicate about cancer and become educated about IBC because it’s not your typical diagnosis said Arnold, who had a physical change and severe swelling in her breasts that prompted her to seek medical attention. “It’s really important that women put themselves at the front of the line because this is a disease that’s nasty and fast. If you don’t get what you need, you won’t make it. One of our goals is to get more research funded. We want women to be aware of the access. We are unique. No one else is doing this,” Arnold explained. For more information, go to www.theibcnetwork.org.

Tigers
pledge to continue careers at the next level
By Dennis Silva II Moro Ojomo decided where to continue his football career less than 24 hours before National Signing Day. The Katy senior defensive tackle announced he would be committing to Texas on the afternoon of Feb. 6. About 13 hours later, he was officially signing to the Longhorns. “It was more of God telling me to go to UT. It was more about a spiritual feeling to go play at the University of Texas,” said Ojomo, District 19-6A’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2017. “It was a really hard decision, but it came down to the class that Texas is bringing in. They’re building a great program and the facilities are beautiful. Everything’s just coming together at Texas.” Ojomo, born in Nigeria, elected to bypass Oklahoma and Oregon and was a highly sought-after recruit following a dominant season for Katy. Only 16 years old, the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Ojomo anchored another strong defense for the Tigers during their run to the state semifinals last season. Ojomo elected to not focus on his recruiting process during the season, eager to help Katy get as far as it could during the playoffs. “It was crazy, from December to right now,” Ojomo said. “It was coaches at the house or school, 24/7, calling my phone. It’s a really great process. For any recruits out there, I recommend taking all the visits and seeing what’s all there.” Ojomo was just one of many Katy High student-athletes who signed to continue their college careers at the next level.
Ojomo said the whole process awarded him confidence and motivation. He joins a celebrated recruiting class for Texas that has the Longhorns’ haul ranked No. 3 overall, per 247sports.com. “It makes me want to work,” he said. “Hard work beats talent. This all makes me want to work, get in the weight room and go as hard as I can when I get there. Three of Ojomo’s teammates — defensive end Michael Matus (Arizona State), offensive tackle Connor Galvin (Baylor), and kicker/punter Seth Small (Texas A&M) — took advantage of the new early signing period and put pen to paper in in December. The following is a list of athletes that signed on Feb. 7. KATY Girls Soccer: Paige Thompson, Oklahoma. Boys Soccer: Keelin Garrity, Our Lady of the Lake. Golf: Alex Koll, LeTourneau University. Katy’s Krause Center provides help for girls throughout this region By Valerie Sweeten Incredible healing on all levels is what the Krause Children’s Center has been providing for girls not only in the Greater Houston area, but the state of Texas. Located in Katy, this faith-based nonprofit provides spiritual care, counseling and education. Krause, in operation since 1995, has served both boys and girls until 2014, when it became a girls-only treatment center. With the ability to accommodate 65 girls at a time, they’re able to serve between 200-250 per year. An average stay for these girls, who come through Child Protective Services and the Juvenile Justice System, can range from six to eight months so on-site education is provided by Trinity Charter School, an affiliate of Upbring. The education goal is getting students back on grade level, so they’ll be able to transition to another school setting. Jason Drake, MSW, LCCA, Executive Director at Krause Children’s Treatment Center and Regional Executive Direc-
tor-Upbring, said they’re blessed to serve girls from many communities in the area. This central location allows local families the chance to visit their children regularly and participate in therapy and Family Day activities. Having family involved is huge for the girls and boosts long-term outcomes according to Drake. For families that aren’t local, designated raised funds go towards a “Family Travel Fund” to eliminate any financial barriers barring a visit. Business Skype and GoToMeeting also come in handy for family therapy sessions and sibling visits. These girls, ages 12-17, have survived extremely difficult circumstances and are deemed warriors and survivors. The goal is to help each girl realize their own dreams, talents and abilities while providing a safe place to grow and thrive. In 2016, 269 girls were given a safe place to heal at Krause. Before the girls come to Krause, they learn about their Trauma Informed Care Approach as well as learn about the

day-to-day activities and meet a current resident. “This provides the girl that’s coming to Krause an opportunity to talk with one of her peers and find out what she likes about Krause, doesn’t like about Krause, etc. It is important for us to have the youth’s voice in all we do, from Policy & Procedure to interviewing job candidates,” said Drake. Once at Krause, the girls engage with their primary therapist, case manager, nurse and direct-care staff. Bedding, towels and hygiene supplies are all provided in addition to a MP3 player to use as music is an important coping mechanism for teenagers in treatment. Volunteers, such as Katy resident Anne Williams, serves as a mentor to three girls currently. As a retired teacher, Williams enjoys the interaction with the girls. She has been volunteering at Krause for more than three years. “I love it,” she said. “It touches my heart. We let them know somebody cares, and they’re important people. We may talk about what they want to do when they group up, how they’re getting along with girls and in classes. They’re very appreciative. I feel very special.” Williams, along with other volunteers, also conducts crafts such as making Mardi Gras masks, coloring Easter eggs and even making cards for the military. “It’s very rewarding,” Williams added. Drake stated that he’s most proud of helping children break the cycle of abuse they were born into as well as his team, the “family,” that makes this possible. “There is not a better job out there than knowing you made a course-altering difference in an otherwise dangerous life path that had been set out for so many ‘forgotten girls.’ We are on the cutting edge of residential treatment and are recognized as a leader in the field. We couldn’t do our life-changing work without our direct care staff and clinical team. It is challenging work, but they come back day after day because they have a heart for the children we serve. They want them to know that we see them, value them and celebrate them,” he said. For more information or to learn about volunteering, go to www.upbring.org/programs-and-services/childrens-centers/ krause-childrens-center.

With aid of ankle replacement surgery, residents enjoying life once again
After having decades of chronic pain, Scott Huegele believes his quality of life has greatly improved thanks to an ankle replacement surgery. He said he was very grateful for having the ankle replacement surgery that allowed him to do to many of the activities he loves. Huegele, a semi-retired 60-year-old Richmond resident, said his younger years of riding motorcycles, basketball, football, baseball, waterskiing had taken their toll on his ankle. He said by the 1980s he was already having stability issues. “I’d be walking along and maybe step on a little rock wrong, and my ankle would give out because it was all stretched out from spraining it,” Huegele said. “The ligaments just couldn’t support the joint. And I think that’s probably when the damage started occurring with the actual ankle joint, working its way toward wearing out all the lubrication points in the ankle.” In the early 1990s, Huegele had a surgery to tighten up his ligaments, but over time he said his ankle was slowly giving out and got to the point where it was “bone rubbing on the bone.” He said he was encouraged to get the joint fused, but he did not want to lose its mobility. “I’m very active — I do all kind of stuff. I play golf. I was not willing to give up that,” he said. “And so I just kind of medicated it and received shots every six months to keep the swelling down and to be able to get through.” Huegele said it got to the point where he could not walk more than half a block due to the pain, so he started turning down invitations do things. Once a member of a Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo barbecue cook-off team, Huegele
26 / Katy Today /March 2018
said he had to give that up because he couldn’t walk from the gate to the tent. “That’s just an example of the activities that I could no longer handle, and it can be very depressing to go from a very active lifestyle to saying no all the time,” he said. In March 2016, Huegele met Dr. William McGarvey, who is an orthopedic surgeon that works out of Memorial Hermann in Katy. McGarvey has been doing surgery for more than 21 years. The concept for ankle replacement has been around for a long time. The original designs and the techniques were probably not nearly as good as today’s. “Certainly, there’s been a lot of evolution since I started doing it back in 1996,” McGarvey said. “There was a lot of fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of thing back then. It’s refined quite a bit. The designs are certainly much better. I think the surgeons are better and more comfortable with some of the things that we’re doing. So it just makes it a more mainstream procedure for people at least that are interested in this kind of surgery. There are still a lot of people that don’t do it for a lot of different reasons, but for those of us that do, we’ve seen a lot of growth in this area. “ When I first started doing it, I think I was the only one in town doing it, but at this point, I would say that the majority of the doctors that specialize in foot and ankle surgery, the orthopedic surgeons in town, will do some degree of ankle replacement,” McGarvey said. “There are degrees of difficulty with any surgery, and so some guys will do the straightforward ones and not do the more complicated ones. Some will kind of dabble in the complicated ones, and others of us will take on whatever we feel is safe and reasonable.”
McGarvey said with any joint replacement, doctors are basically looking to remove any arthritic surfaces from the ends of the bone and replace them with artificial components that are designed to try to reestablish the mechanical function of that joint. “So basically you take everything that’s grinding and worn out and replace it with typically metal and plastic or polyethylene components for better gliding surface and more stability and better function,” McGarvey said. “It’s a fairly involved procedure because there’s a lot of precision involved. What you take out, you pretty much replace. You try to replace it as exactly as possible but better surfaces.”
physical therapy to get motion back and to basically retrain the gait in a more normal fashion. A lot of these people have been walking crooked and painfully for a long period of time. They essentially have to relearn how to walk.” With any surgery, there are always challenges. Said McGarvey: “For the most people are typically better than what they were beforehand. You know some people may feel like, ‘Okay, I’m going to have my ankle replaced, and then I’m going to get back out to all of the activities I was doing beforehand.’ “I make it very clear to them preoperatively that a joint replacement is a procedure for pain relief and to promote daily
McGarvey said his patients are normally older patients but he said he does have small population of younger patients who are willing to accept the risks involved with joint replacement surgery, but generally, they’re going to be folks that are over 50, oftentimes over 65. “It can be any number of things — it can be old sports injuries, it could be trauma from a motor vehicle accident or a fall, it could be rheumatoid arthritis, or it could be osteoarthritis,” McGarvey said. “So there’s any number of reasons to do it, but basically it’s anything that causes the joint to wear out and make it painful and no longer functional. “It depends on the associated deformities, so if there’s an ankle that’s worn out, but it’s still lined up well, and there’s no other foot problems or anything else that go along with it, the rehabilitation is a lot quicker. And a lot of times, people once they have their replacement and it’s healed up reasonably well, will just get back up on the foot and move around on it and that’s their therapy,” McGarvey said. “But I would say in at least a third of the patients that I see, there is some sort of associated deformity where the ankle is crooked or has worn itself out in some other asymmetric way, or there is a foot deformity that goes along with it because of compensation or a previous injury of both. And so that has to be addressed, and it adds procedures to the ankle surgery itself. Those things will oftentimes delay the ability to get back up on it and have to heal. So then there is a moderate amount of
function — it’s not a procedure you would do on an athlete in an effort to try to get them back to playing basketball or playing tennis or running for exercise,” McGarvey said. “Impact loading exercises are things you sacrifice once you commit to having a joint replacement of any sort. The other things that happen are just based on again expectations, so if patients have had previous traumas to extremities and they have arthritis, this is part of that. The joint replacement helps the arthritis, but if there’s a lot of scarring, if there’s nerve damage, if there’s other injuries to the soft tissue, sometimes those can be addressed at the time. Sometimes, they can’t be addressed at all. If those things have been extreme and are permanent, then they may still see symptoms. But again oftentimes they are at least some percentage better due to the fact that the joint doesn’t hurt anymore. “I typically tell folks they can walk unlimited amounts. They can swim,” McGarvey said. “They can hike, climb stairs, work out on machines at the gym, but they can’t run. They can’t play ball sports. We try to defer them from lifting really heavy objects on a repetitive basis.” The first ankle replacements were put in around 1970, and they weren’t very good according to McGarvey. It took off quite a bit. At this point, based on a lot of the available literature and publications, the pain relief that people get is at least equal to if not better than the previous alternatives like ankle fusion and other surgeries.
