3 Keys to ‘Buying’ a Better Game

by Leonard Finkel If new clubs meant you would drive the ball 20 yards longer and drop several strokes, would you reach for your credit card? According to a Golf Magazine fitting study, you should!

I spoke with Club Champion founder, Nick Sherburne, who gave me a quick primer on what you should look for when buying new equipment. Club Champion is the highly regarded expert in the field, ranked by Golf Digest among the 100 best club fitters year after year. They offer more than 35,000 hittable head and shaft combinations, the best-trained master fitters, nearly every brand in golf, plus unrivaled, in-house club building. Here are 3 tips Nick had to share.

1) Choose the Proper Shaft The industry has taught us that the head is the most important component of a golf club.

However, the proper shaft is actually more important. The shaft powers the clubhead and is critical to how well the club performs. If your shaft doesn’t optimize your swing, then you’re not maximizing your clubhead. Buying the ideal club off the rack is almost impossible because there is no industry standard that defines an R, S, or X flex shaft. The way to determine your best shaft/head combination is to use a skilled fitter working with a launch monitor.

Club Champion begins all fittings by evaluating the shaft, not only to determine the appropriate flex, but also the proper shaft weight. They utilize a unique coupling system that allows you to combine any shaft and head together. Most fitters use fitting carts provided by club manufacturers that limit their ability to mix-and-match components across carts. Club Champion, on the other hand, offers hundreds of shaft options, many not available from most other fitters and retailers.

2) Choose the Appropriate Clubhead All driver models have distinctive characteristics that affect launch angle, spin rate and ball speed. Look for a clubhead that provides maximum distance, control and feel for your swing.

Launch monitors identify which head and shaft combinations deliver the highest Smash Factor, ball speed and controlled spin.

Irons are even more complex because golfers need to choose between design features like offset, leading edge, lie angle, weighting and varying degrees of cavity back, which all impact playability.

These design elements can counter a fade, a hook or promote better and more consistent contact. That’s why it is so important for a fitter to blend your swing characteristics with the correct components. 3) Choose the Right Swingweight Often overlooked is swingweight, which is a measurement of weight distribution of the club.

This impacts how your club feels when you swing it. With today’s widely variable shaft, clubhead and grip weights, getting the right swingweight is more important than ever. A heavier swingweight will make a shaft play looser; lighter makes it play stiffer. The key application of swingweight is matching clubs within a set. If your clubs aren’t properly matched, they will likely feel different as you swing them.

Fox Hollow Golf Club is one of the premier

golf courses in the state and was recently rated 57th by Golf Digest’s “Top 75 Courses Accessible to the Public in Florida”. Purchased by the Creighton family four and a half years ago, one of their goals was to take the course to a higher level by improving course conditions and constantly making improvements.

Opening in 1994, the Fox Hollow golf course has the distinction of being one of the last courses designed and built by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., one of the most prolific and innovative golf course designers of all time. In his design of Fox GolfCoastMagazine.com

Hollow, the legendary Jones created a layout as picturesque as it is playable.

Quite simply, Fox Hollow offers a good, fair test of golf.

Water comes into play on 11 holes and Jones’ other signature feature – plentiful and penal bunker complexes – abounds. Fox Hollow has hosted local qualifying for the U.S. Open as well as qualifiers for the Valspar Championship, the PGA Tour event held annually at Innisbrook Golf Resort.

Hole #18 es every time it’s played, mixing native trees and vegetation, sparkling lakes, sand bunkers and a variety of wildlife.

Fox Hollow’s rolling fairways are a delightful departure from the pancake-flat layouts found elsewhere in Florida.

The third hole is a straightaway par 4 (measuring 451 yards from the back tee) that will challenge the most accomplished ball strikers. Viewing the hole from the tee there’s a water hazard left and OB right. A massive oak tree on the right pinches in the landing area, making the tee shot extremely demanding. The approach shot is uphill to a wide, narrow

green protected by a deep bunker in front and more sand on the player’s left.

If awards are what you’re looking for, the Tampa Tribune has placed Fox Hollow on its list of top three public-access courses in all of west central Florida; and Central Florida Magazine says the 18th hole is simply the “Best Par 4 in Florida”.

From the tips, Fox Hollow’s finishing hole is a robust 459 yards. From the white tees it’s a slightly more manageable 429 yards. With water guarding both sides from tee to green, the fairway appears to be an island of grass. Place

The 451-yard, Par-4 third hole will challenge even the most accomplished ball strikers. your drive in play and your work is only half done. The approach demands a long, accurate shot to a large, undulating green protected by yawning bunkers front left and right.

Beginning in March, Charlotte Harbor National will also host a live golf radio show broadcast Saturday mornings from 8-9. It features Dave Hronek, PGA Director of Golf; Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA Director of Instruction and Rich Smith. The public is invited to participate as audience members.

The renaissance extends to the golf course and beyond. The 4- 1/2 star Golf Digest rated course designed by 1986 PGA Champion Bob Tway is a fun course for beginners but challenging for even the best golfers.

Under the direction of Jamie Detert, GCSAA Director of Agronomy, new bunkers are completed on all 18 holes, and the course is in the best shape ever. Mark O’Neal, a club member for 18 years, has witnessed the tremendous improvements over the last six months. He originally was attracted to the community GolfCoastMagazine.com

because of its small size and the relative ease of making a tee time. A member of the men’s golf association, he also feels the members are so friendly that it’s always easy to find a game.

O’Neal credits the teamwork of General Manager Ellen Smith along with her husband Rich’s workaholic schedule to the many ways the community has benefitted. “From inside the clubhouse to the golf course, it’s a remarkable change.” He points to the recent great reviews on Golf Advisor. “The last 3-4 months have been nothing but positive,” says O’Neal.

Charlotte Harbor National is also home to the world’s only Sorenstam Golf Academy, led by Charlotta Sorenstam, LPGA 1998 Solheim European Cup Team Member, 2000 LPGA TOUR Standard Ping Register Champion and sister of LPGA Hall of Famer Annika Sorenstam.

Charlotta moved the academy from Orlando and has embraced the North Port community, now calling it home. Her large following

of students from Orlando, Tampa and Fort Myers have traveled hours for lessons and to play the course.

“The most important improvements I’ve seen here is the greens and bunkers are so much better,” says Sorenstam.

“For me, playing a course with greens and bunkers in such good shape makes for a totally enjoyable experience.”

CHNGC also supports two main charities, Arnie’s Army charitable foundation and Folds of Honor with a portion of each membership and a dollar from each round. In December, the club raised over $15,000 to donate to men’s prostate cancer in honor of Will Frantz, PGA professional emeritus.

In announcing the acquisition of Port Charlotte Golf Club Smith said: “It’s a beautiful golf course. The people there are as nice and friendly as the people at Charlotte Harbor National. Being that this is my hometown and my community I love the fact that I will have two of the nicest golf courses in the area. So many opportunities are in place for members to have two places to play. The clubs are both semi-private and anyone can play but the members will now have two courses to play.”

Renovations are scheduled this summer for Port Charlotte Golf Club with the same core values employed at Charlotte Harbor National of exceptional quality, hospitality, charitable giving and lots of fun.

Tarpon Springs Golf Course Originally built in 1908, the Tarpon Springs golf course follows the architecture of the time with small, elevated greens and quite a few doglegs. The course is very scoreable on your good days, while water hazards can wreak havoc on your bad ones.

During the summer of 2014, all 18 greens and two practice greens were reconstructed. The greens now feature new contours and state-of-the-art Seashore Paspalum turf. At the same time, bunkers were re-sanded and the driving range renovated.

2018 PGA Merchandise Show

If the annual gathering in Orlando is any indication, 2018 is off to a good start. Traffic on the show floor was strong and, more importantly, vibrant.

Industry tracking firm Golf Datatech also saw reason for optimism, with founding partner Tom Stine saying he expects 2018 to be a good year for the industry. “I would expect we would see a bounce back in units sold this year, and the price points have been good. I’m optimistic.” Those last two words pretty much summed up the attitude of most in attendance.

After years of existence on the sport’s periphery, the application of statistics and data-driven technology is no longer a novelty in golf. Judging by its presence at the show, it’s a mechanism at the heart of all things golf, be it instruction, management, equipment or just plain recreation.

Examples include more in-depth output from launch monitor and simulator readings; digital apps that track your playing performance with your clubs and share the info with your mobile device; smart systems in golf carts to identify what parts of the course act as bottle necks; and suits that deduce what parts of your golf swing are causing problems like hooks and blocks. These breakthroughs have been talked about for years, although always using the future tense. As this week’s show proved, the future is now.

Tatum Ridge Golf Links is a Scottish-style links course complemented by preserved wetlands and 11 lakes in a natural setting, with plenty of wild life and nature at its best. We have been “Sarasota’s Fun Course to Play” since 1989. Our signature hole is the 504-yard, par 5, 13th, a dogleg right over water. A large practice facilty offers grass tees, chipping from grass and bunkers, and an 18-hole putting green. Lessons are available by appointment. Proper golf attire and soft spikes are required. Experience the Citrus Golf Trail

Relatively speaking, I’m a newcomer

to Florida. I’ve loved living in the state and have been to all the biggest destinations – from Tampa, Sarasota (my home), to Naples on the ‘Golf Coast’, to Orlando, Palm Beach, Jacksonville, Miami, and even Tallahassee.

Admittedly, I didn’t know what – or better, where – Sebring was.

Just a short drive from anywhere on the ‘Golf Coast’, Sebring is an incredible destination where you can take advantage of exceptional golf at value prices.

In fact, golfers can stay and play for as little as $99 per person including golf, room, and a complimentary breakfast.

This year I was invited to the Citrus Golf Trail Media Classic – and since it’s unlikely that I’ll be invited back (bad behavior), I thought that I’d share the incredible experience that is the Citrus Golf Trail.

We checked into the Inn on the Lakes in Sebring. It’s a quaint family owned hotel centrally located in Sebring, between two large and beautiful lakes. I couldn’t believe how modern and beautiful the room was when I checked in, it was the perfect place to relax after a long day.

After checking in, we quickly departed to the Sun ‘N Lakes Golf Club.

The club has consistently been ranked among the best in Florida, and it lived up to its reputation. Sun ‘N Lakes features 36 holes – the Deer Run Course designed

by Don Dyer and the Turtle Run Course designed by Charles Ankrom.

We played nine holes from each course.

The courses were challenging and designed like many of the best courses here on the coast. The designers used water, clever layout, and the beautiful landscape to create an exceptional experience. The Deer Run Course features length and challenging green complexes, while the Turtle Run Course puts more emphasis on accuracy than distance.

At the end of the day we went to Cowpoke’s Watering Hole to celebrate a great day of golf. We need to talk about Cowpoke’s.

Cowpoke’s is an institution in Sebring that’s been around for over 30 years. It’s not for the faint of heart. If you love steak and you think that the gator you saw on the course looked tasty – then Cowpoke’s is the place for you. You’ll get fried food, including gator, tender steaks, heavy drinks, and a great country style atmosphere. If you serve a phenomenal ribeye, you’ll get a good review from me, so Cowpoke’s gets five stars for providing a delicious indulgence of southern style cooking.

Next on our list of attractions was Pinecrest Country Club. Pinecrest was designed by Donald Ross in 1926 and has been recently restored. It’s surrounded by and is a part of Florida’s history.

The most visible historical point is the Pinecrest Hotel – which was a major destination when the rich and famous would take the train to vacation in Sebring. Frequent guests at the hotel included Al Capone, Babe Ruth, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The Pinecrest Country Club itself was part of history in the late 50s, when it hosted the first nationally televised PGA event, the World Championship of Golf. Players included Sam Snead, Gardner Dickinson, Don January and the winner, Dr. Carey Middlecoff.

The course at Pinecrest is stunning.

There are no condos or homes bordering the fairways, instead, the course winds through natural wooded areas and orange groves. The course features false

fronts on many of the greens and bunkers, one of Donald Ross’ signatures.

After a great nine holes, we headed over to River Greens Golf Course.

It’s a truly unique 6400-yard course with lots of water, drivable par fours, and several great risk/reward opportunities. This is a course that calls for strategy and accuracy, and you’re guaranteed to have a fun time.

Another day in Sebring brought more great food and drink. We had the chance to visit Eighteen East, a restaurant and bar that was founded by a retired police officer from Indiana. It’s a wonderful place to enjoy a laid-back meal with Midwest classics.

We also enjoyed a gourmet meal at Chicanes, the hotel restaurant at the Inn on the Lakes. This is a great place to enjoy a high-end meal in a luxurious setting. I highly recommend the ribeye (you

may notice a pattern in my heart attack inducing eating patterns), which was cooked to perfection!

Our final round in Sebring was at the Highlands Ridge Golf Club, where we played the North course. This course is among my favorites in Florida because of the natural beauty of the setting. It was designed by Dave Harman who patterned it after the Kauri Cliffs in New Zealand. It’s a great track that plays 7141 yards with a rating of 74.7 and a slope of 138 from the black tees. It’s a challenging course and a great way to conclude three days of championship golf.

How do you conclude an epic golfing trip with great friends?

You go to an internationally renowned racetrack.

Our final stop in Sebring was the Sebring International Raceway. It’s America’s oldest road racing track, with over six decades of storied history. The legendary circuit evolved from Hendricks Field, a World War II airbase used to train B-17 combat crews.

Sebring is a phenomenal place to visit in March – because on the third Saturday of March, the giants of sports car racing are challenged to one of the world’s most grueling endurance tests.

For 12 hours, the best in the sports car racing scene drive the 3.74-mile track for glory.

The race is second only to Le Mans in international prestige.

There’s a lot happening out in central Florida, and you don’t want to miss it.

3 Strategies to Cure the Yips in Golf Do you struggle with executing short putts, getting off the tee with ease, or feeling confident with your shots around the green? The challenge in working with golfers who suffer from the yips is not eliminating the physical yip, but overcoming the bad thoughts (of hitting a poor shot or getting a poor outcome) that are producing the yips. The solution is to address the root cause, not the symptom.

Your shots are a reflection of your thoughts. Therefore, you must fix your thinking in order to fix your swing. Here are 3 strategies to help free you from the yips 1 - Reset Your Self-Image The first step to overcoming your yips is to stop thinking of yourself as a golfer with a yip problem. This may sound silly because it’s so simple, but it works. Fixating on how many times you’ve yipped will simply set you up to repeat those yipped shots.

The more you begin to see yourself as a golfer who can swing freely, because you invest time thinking about when you have (instead of when you haven’t), the more that better self-image will become your reality, and the more you will produce better shots.

2 - Reset Your Expectations Prior to any shot with which you have struggled, you need to actively remain in control of your thoughts. Are you expecting to yip, or are you expecting to swing freely? The choice is yours.

You can talk yourself into hitting a good shot just as easily as you may be in the habit of talking yourself into hitting a bad one. Take active control of your expectations and make sure they are directing you toward the shot you want to hit every time.

3 - Reset Your Routine How you think about and prepare to hit every shot is within your control, and will determine the quality and consistency of your shots. A good pre-shot routine enables you to play without the noise of technical swing thoughts. Unfortunately, golfers with the yips are often overly focused on fixing their technique to solve their problem.

The solution is simplifying your pre-shot thoughts to how your good swing feels, rather than how to technically swing the club correctly. Good feel in the practice swing will enable you to focus on repeating that same good feel when you’re over the ball. This approach will keep your mind in play, rather than practice mode on the course.
