WICKENBURG, AZ

Welcome to Wickenburg

I hope you enjoy this issue of The Arena, where you’ll find consignments for The Horse Sale at Rancho Rio. You’ll also find all the details on the NTR National Finals IV. For three years the NTR has brought you one of the industry’s leading Finale events in both team counts and payouts. Each year has offered exciting innovations and the fourth year will be no different. You’ll find changes to both the formats and the schedule. It is always our goal to put more money in your pocket and we think you’ll find these changes do just that. Remember, anyone can enter the NTR National Finals.

New this year is the #8 Open to the World Truck Roping on Saturday. I’m looking forward to finishing off Finals week with one roper driving home in a new $50,000 trophy truck. Once again, we will be having lots of cash pots early in the week for the ropers to get tuned up for the big Finales. The NTR’s VIP Membership program continues to grow. This year we will have two VIP Championship Ropings at the Finals, with each roping adding $10,000. The only requirement to enter these ropings is that you have a current NTR VIP membership. If you aren’t already a VIP member, you’ll have the option to upgrade prior to these big added money ropings. This season the VIP program has paid out $45,000 in cash bonuses and we are looking to add more benefits through the coming year to continue its success.

Ty Grantham and I are extremely proud of THE HORSE SALE at Rancho Rio. This year there are 56 select horses that are either finished rope horses or rope horse prospects. The last few years this sale has been the largest rope horse sale in the nation, and after looking at the enclosed catalog of horses, I think we will keep the crown again this year. The preview will take place on Thursday afternoon following the #8 Finale, and the sale will be Friday night. One thing I encourage buyers to do is contact the consignors early, go look and try the consigned horses before the sale. Most of the horses come from return consignors who are reputable horseman. We have added a couple hundred new stalls this year at Rancho Rio, to help with the stall problem the last couple of years. Please call 928.684.3150 to reserve the nights you will need. We look forward to seeing you in Wickenburg. The following pages are filled with information to help you navigate the Team Roping Capital of the World. As always if you have additional questions please let us know at 520.521.1495.

Good Luck Ropers!

Ty Yost

THE NATION'S BOUNTY STEER

For months ropers have been trying to slick horn Rio and take home a sweet reward, but the cash bounty remains unclaimed. Set at $1,000 early this season the reward bounty rises as ropers enter daily for their chance to rope Rio. DETAILS: Ropers can enter each day for $20. Enter as many times as you want but only one roper will be drawn to rope Rio daily. Entries close at the start of the first roping of the day. All entries increase the bounty, 80% of bounty goes to the roper, 20% of bounty goes to local Wickenburg charities. Slick horns only and a barrier will be used. Barrier will be a no time. Producer can change rules as needed. PHOTO BY BAITED & BRANDED

Around Town

THE RISE OF THE TEAM ROPING CAPITAL OF THE WORLD Adapted from www.wickenburgchamber.com hen the late Beaver Bird started the first Tuesday team roping jackpots in Wickenburg, Ariz., circa 2002, little did he know he was launching what would soon become a new chapter in the town’s colorful history. Today, with nearly a dozen arenas spanning the area it is literally a hot bed of ropers. A quick look at Wickenburg’s rich past and it’s easy to see why this jewel of the Sonoran Desert lent itself naturally to the rise of The Team Roping Capital of the World.

W

The Vulture Mine Among the gold searchers was the German immigrant, Henry Wickenburg, whose quest was rewarded by the discovery of the Vulture Mine, where over $30 million in gold has been dug from the ground. Throughout the foothills surrounding Wickenburg are relics of other mines that stand as a tribute to the pioneer miner and prospector. The mining lore of the region, past and present, adds much to the charm of the area.

The Hassayampa For centuries the western Yavapai made the once fertile banks of the Hassayampa River their home. Located within the territories of both the Spanish Empire and Mexican Republic, neither extended their authority in the region. However, Hispanic culture and trade did reach the Yavapai and there are still strong ties to the culture today.

The Ranchers Ranchers and farmers who built homes along the fertile plain of the Hassayampa River accompanied the miners. Many of the resourceful and committed settlers came from Sonora, Mexico, giving this area the distinction of being the northern edge of the Hispanic ranching frontier. Together with Henry Wickenburg and the miners, they helped found the young community of Wickenburg in 1863.

The Gold Rush Stalwart hunters and trappers began exploring the region in the early 1820s and their reports piqued American interest in the West. In 1862 a gold strike on the Colorado River near the present-day Yuma inspired hardy prospectors and miners, predominantly from California and Mexico, to search for minerals throughout central Arizona. The Wickenburg area and much of the West became part of the United States following the Mexican American War in 1848.

The Railroad The infant town went through many trials and tribulations in those first decades, surviving Indian wars, mine closures, desperadoes, drought, and a disastrous flood in 1890 when the Walnut Creek Dam burst, killing nearly 70 (read more on page 32). Through it all, the town continued to grow. Its prosperity was insured with the coming of the railroad in 1895. The historic depot still stands today as the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center.

The Dude Ranch Capital of the World Along the town’s main historic district, early businesses built beautiful structures that still grace Wickenburg’s downtown area. The abundant clean air and wide-open spaces attracted a whole new and exciting aspect of the Wickenburg neighborhood. Guest ranches offered a unique western experience to tourists who fell in love with the West. The Bar FX Ranch became the first true guest ranch in 1923, followed by the Remuda, Kay El Bar, Rancho de los Caballeros, and Flying E ranches, just to mention a few. The construction of the Phoenix to California highway (Highway 60) brought even more tourists, making Wickenburg the Dude Ranch Capital of the World. Today, some of these ranches still offer their unique brand of Western hospitality. World War II The Hassayampa community became a vital contributor to America’s patriotic war effort during World War II when the U.S. Army trained thousands of men to fly gliders at a newly constructed airfield west of Wickenburg. After the War, modern pioneers and home builders developed Wickenburg into a splendid American community. Wickenburg of today is a modern town with over 600 businesses providing a full range of services, shopping conveniences, specialty shops and galleries for gifts of western distinction. Traditions of the Old West The western ambience, however, still thrives. The town has cherished the best traditions of its colorful early days. Through annual events such as Gold Rush Days, and the famous Desert Caballeros Men’s trail ride, organizations such as the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce, Desert Caballeros Western Museum, Desert Caballeros, and the determination and hard work of its citizens, Wickenburg is committed to preserving the best traditions of the Old West. Out Wickenburg Way We encourage you to “rope in the region” and discover Wickenburg’s historic downtown. You’ll find historical markers like the Jail Tree where townspeople chained lawbreakers in the old days and the Hassayampa River Well, enjoy the self-guided Historical Walking Tour, see beautiful bronze sculptures and more.

The Desert Caballeros Western Museum was founded by Wickenburg residents in 1960 in order to collect and preserve the history of Wickenburg and the Arizona Territory. Today, the Museum is now a nationally recognized center for Western art, history, and culture. The Museum’s renowned collection of Western fine art meets historical depictions of early 1900s Wickenburg. Core to the collection are works by George Catlin, Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Frederic Remington, Charles Russell and Taos Society of Artists. Works by Billy Schenck, Maynard Dixon, Alan Houser, Deborah Fellows and more offer an enriching contemporary presentation. The Museum’s lower level contains large scale re-creations of scenes from turn-of-the-century Wickenburg, including a street scene, a Victorian home, and a ranch, all constructed from historical photographs, maps, and oral histories. A complimentary guidePORT™ audio guide enriches the Museum tour with additional commentary and stories about the exhibitions. The Museum’s Cultural Crossroads Learning Center features a variety of changing and traveling exhibitions and hosts numerous programs and workshops throughout the year. Frequently rotating temporary exhibitions and a diverse schedule of lectures, workshops, and events rounds out the Museum’s vibrant palette of offerings. DCWM is open daily, except for holidays and Mondays, Memorial Day through Labor Day. Admission is always free for Museum Members, active military and guests 17 and younger. Discounts are available for seniors and AAA members. For more information, visit www.westernmuseum.org or call 928-684-2272.

EXCUSES Jace Thorstenson secured four call backs amid 956 teams to take home the January L4R Ford truck.

Spending summers on his family’s ranch in New Underwood, S.D., 14-year-old Jace Thorstenson has been driving since he was 6-years-old, but that doesn’t mean he’s not counting down the days until he can hit the open road in his new Ford truck. Thorstenson told his dad he had a good feeling about the Truck Roping and talked him in to taking him. A 2015 National Little Britches World Champ, Thorstenson had four call backs in the #9

Truck Roping at the January 20, L4R Tour Stop at Rancho Rio in Wickenburg, Ariz., with the two highest spots at 13th and 4th. Despite the pressure he maintained a cool composure and it paid off when he finished three times in the top 10 and garnered more than enough points to be named the High Point Champion Team Roper. During the 2016-2017 Rancho Rio season, Thorstenson had more than 86 entries, but he never pulled a check. How did you keep calm going into the short round? I didn’t get too nervous really. I just told myself that you just have to rope the way you rope.

This season the National Team Roping Tour launched its newest tour series and ropers are locked on. The Livin’ for Ropin’ (L4R) Tour consists of a limited number of two- and three-day events with low fees, big cash payouts and bold prize lines that include trucks, saddles, trophy buckles and more. The L4R Tour kicked off at the famed Circle T Arena in Hamilton, Texas, with stops #2 and #3 at Rancho Rio Arena, in Wickenburg, Ariz. Held over two Saturdays in January, the third tour stop saw 1,600 teams compete for a new Ford F350 Dually truck, 20 trophy Cactus Saddles, Gist Buckles and $150,000 in cash. The formats are simple. These stand-alone events offer exceptional payouts and prizes to ropers and are especially formatted for our ropers who cannot make the NTR National Finals in Wickenburg.

Who taught you how to rope? My dad taught me, and Tyler Magnus has helped me a lot. (Magnus has been putting on regular roping clinics at the Thorstenson’s winter home in Surprise, Ariz., for more than a decade.) What’s one important thing your dad taught you about roping? Probably to ride my horse first and get my position. Do you just team rope? I head, heel and rope calves. I used to head a lot more but now I’m starting to heel more. Tell us about your horse. Toad, he’s really friendly. His personality is really cool. I’ve been roping on him about a month. My dad trained him and sold him to a guy and that guy decided he didn’t want him anymore and I liked him so much I bought him. He’s a 12-year-old gelding. Where is your favorite place to rope? Rancho Rio is my favorite, and Downtown Arena and Trails West too. Those are the arenas I always go to.

2018 NTR NATIONAL FINALS IV • NATIONALTEAMROPING.COM

“This was my first check in over a year here, but I guess I made up for it.” In addition to the Ford truck, valued at $50,000, Thorstenson finished fourth in the average with Mike Schmitz, eighth in the average with Rory Billie and tenth with John Bahe to take home his half of $8,000 in cash. We caught up with Jace to talk a little more about why he’s Livin’ for Ropin’.

Do you just jackpot? I also compete in the Arizona Junior Rodeo Association and the Arizona Junior High Rodeos. I’ll do Junior High rodeo when we go back for the summer. Do you have any hobbies besides roping? I like to train horses. I’ve made a couple of knives. I kind of like building those, but mostly just roping. Is this your first big NTR win? My very first NTR was at Dunn’s Arena. It was a #6 roping, I think. I was 6-years-old and won a breastcollar. I won a NTR saddle in 2015, the same year I was the Little Britches World Champion. What’s one piece of advice you have as an accomplished young roper? One thing I’ve learned from before, and now that I’m winning a little, when I go out and miss I don’t ponder over that one. I just go on. I try not to make any excuses, I just tell myself it happens and keep roping.

THE HASSAYAMPA

Rancho Rio provides direct access to the dry washes of the Hassayampa River, which begins north of Wickenburg, in the Bradshaw Mountains and empties into the Gila River near Arlington. Although the river’s water can be seen year-round north of town at Box Canyon and south of town at the Hassayampa River Preserve, it’s rarely visible at the point closest to Wickenburg. For decades its nickname was “The Upside-Down River” because of its habit of disappearing underground. There are some facts and many theories on where the word Hassayampa was derived. Once an oasis, with water flowing year-round, the western Yavapai made the banks their home, irrigating their crops of corn, beans, squash, and tobacco with river water. The Yavapai referred to the portion of the river nearest Wickenburg as Haviamp. Other records show it was called Ha-se-ya-mo, “following the water as far as it goes.” Still others claim it is a Yuma word for "hidden water.” Regardless of the origins of its name, the Hassayampa was discovered to be a rich gold-bearing region. Ranchers and farmers accompanied miners and built homes along the fertile plain of the Hassayampa and a new West was born. The infant town went through many trials and tribulations in those first decades, surviving Indian wars, mine closures, desperadoes, drought, and a disastrous flood. The Hassayampa may disappear underground in the course of its 100-mile meander, but in years of heavy rain floods are all too common.

In 1887 the Walnut Grove dam was completed about 40 miles northeast of Wickenburg. Built, not only to provide water for mining, the dam was intended to irrigate 100s of acres of farmland. In 1890 an unusually wet winter caused the dam to burst and with it came the loss of life and the loss of much of the fertile soil of the Hassayampa. According to Thomas Penfield, author of "Dig Here!", the great flood resulted in a lost treasure somewhere along the Hassayampa between Wickenburg and the mouth of the river. Penfield states, “...In the Conger Store at Seymore, $1500 was hidden in the rafters of the building. This was swept away together with $5000 in gold kept in a heavy iron safe in Bob Brow's Saloon." The safe and the money has never been found and may still be lying somewhere, just beneath the surface of the banks of the Hassayampa. As the landscape changed, the future of Wickenburg became ever more dependent on mining. Through it all, the town continued to grow. Its prosperity was insured with the coming of the railroad in 1895. The historic depot still stands today as the Wickenburg Chamber of Commerce and Visitor’s Center, a noteable tourist stop. The lost treasure is not the only lore of the Upside-Down River. In fact, the most well-known legend is centuries old. Andrew Downing coined it as a verse that can be found etched on a wooden sign near Wickenburg’s Wishing Well attraction located at the US 60/US 93 roundabout:

THERE’S A LEGEND CENTURIES OLD BY THE EARLY SPANIARDS TOLD OF A SPARKLING STREAM THAT LIES UNDER ARIZONA SKIES HASSAYAMPA IS ITS NAME AND THE TITLE TO ITS FAME IS A WONDROUS QUALITY KNOWN TODAY FROM SEA TO SEA THOSE WHO DRINK ITS WATERS BRIGHT RED MAN, WHITE MAN, BOOR OR KNIGHT GIRLS OR WOMEN, BOYS OR MEN NEVER TELL THE TRUTH AGAIN
