BUSINESS: New and waiting to welcome you! IRON WOLF RANCH & DISTILLERY Iron Wolf Ranch & Distillery was just a dream 3.5 years ago but has recently opened its doors for business. This “framily” business, located in Spicewood Texas, is locally owned and operated and began as the vision of Lakeway/ Spicewood founders Lester Singleton, Jordan and Glenda Watters and Randy Aylieff. Jordan, Glenda and Lester are family that relocated to the Lakeway area in 1989 and are proud to call the Lake Travis Hill Country home, raising families here in the Lake Travis ISD. Randy and his wife Jan are Texas born and raised Austin natives living in Lake Travis as well. The Iron Wolf business leverages the diverse yet complimentary experience of the team – including decades of beer and spirits sales and marketing, media and marketing, business management, along with advanced degrees in engineering and chemistry. The Iron Wolf vision includes producing unique spirits at a compelling hill country venue, wrapped in an edgy and bold brand. Iron Wolf spirits are truly distinctive! From the unique custom bottle to the range of high quality products, all are offered at surprisingly reasonable prices. The current lineup includes Vodka, Gin, Rum, flavored vodkas and whiskeys… truly something for everyone! The products are now being promoted in local bars, restaurants and liquor stores… starting with their popular “Hotscotch” and “Iron Hot” flavored whiskeys. The Iron Wolf brand is one-of-a-kind. The striking wolf eyes command attention on promotional apparel and are especially compelling on the metal bottle labels. They chose the wolf not only because they have one (“Luna,” a Siberian Gray Wolf) but also because the attributes of the wolf include loyalty, strong social relationships and promote the inclusive bonds of the pack to the greater wolf family. The wolf is the embodiment of the Iron Wolf Ranch mantra… Edgy and Bold, Wild and Free! Located on 15 acres with large oaks and elevated views of the Texas Hill

STEEL MAGNOLIA MARKETPLACE Steel Magnolia Marketplace is what happens when East meets West…TEXAS, that is. Linda Harman and Janey Richardson, two women who love classic Southern Charm, collide in Austin and retail vibes begin to flow. Both have husbands who know just how to let the ladies dream their dream…that’s what Southern Gentlemen do! Linda and family had a “head start” by opening “The Shops on Llano” in Fredericksburg. There she learned the business, got a valuable “baptism by fire” experience (that’s what we call it in West Texas), and an itch for retail! After moving back to Lakeway, Linda left the Shop for several years, but the “itch for retail” and her entrepreneurial spirit remained. Along comes her friend Janey Richardson, a resident of Spicewood and a corporate (Xerox) retiree, whose friendliness and love of people made for a fun “what if” conversation. Brainstorming over a glass of wine (that’s what Southern Ladies do!) showed them that they were destined to open a business together… and Janey’s Classy Consignments and Linda’s Bella Vita Boutique were ready to put Spicewood on the retail map! They opened, and The Shops of Spicewood became THE gathering place in the area! Girlfriends came in and met other girlfriends, and long-term friendships developed and the business flourished. Then after 1 ½ years, they had an offer to buy the business…which wasn’t even for sale! Never known to ignore an opportunity, they went for it! Life marched on for several months, and then they both got the “retail itch” again! Hey, Janey, “Wanna open another Shop?” Wow! “Yes, let’s do it!” So, Steel Magnolia Marketplace opened December 1, 2017, and Linda Harman and Janey Richardson became Lakeway’s “Purveyors of Southern Charm!”

Randy Aylieff, Jordan Watters, Glenda Watters, Lester Singleton Sponsors at Operation Warriors Path Gala

Country, Iron Wolf Ranch is a great destination to bring your “pack” and enjoy tasty spirits, expansive decks, fire pit, 9-hole disc golf, bocce ball, games, live music and catered food on the weekends. Iron Wolf is both family and dog friendly, with a fun area for kids to play and walking paths for guests and pooches. There is a bold vision for the expansion of the site, including plans for many buildings to support the growing community with private and business events, music/concerts and eventually weddings. Iron Wolf is located one mile off Hwy 71 just past Opie’s/Spicewood store to the left on CR408. All in all, Iron Wolf Ranch & Distillery is a “must see, must taste” experience. Bring your pack soon to enjoy the “Bold Spirits, Texas Attitude”! 101 County Road 409, Spicewood, Texas 512-970-3203 www.ironwolfranch.com

Their purpose is to find opportunities to ‘give back’. Many of their vendors were selected because of their story of making a difference and impacting lives. Other vendors have great entrepreneurial success stories. Linda and Janey look forward to sharing these stories with you... and the products they represent. They offer “lovelies” in many areas: Wedding, Baby, Home Décor, Travel, Stationery, Jewelry, Bath Linda Harman, Janey Richardson and Body and Candles. The Marketplace is a “Movie Inspired Boutique” with Classic Southern Charm. The movie Steel Magnolias depicts perfectly who Janey and Linda are: women who honor friendship, strength and perseverance to get through the rough times, and to rejoice during the happy ones, all the while supporting each other. Their goal is just that: helping others through the products they sell and by extending a hand of friendship. These two ladies from opposite sides of Texas are making their mark in Lakeway and remembering their “Southern Gentlemen” who are watching from above… perhaps shaking their heads but not surprised at all. 2127 Lohmans Crossing Rd, Suite 306, Lakeway, Texas 512-300-0536 www.SteelMagnoliaMarketplace.com

Shawn Rogers was an outstanding defensive tackle for the UT Longhorns and was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2001. He also played for the Cleveland Browns, the New Orleans Saints and the NY Giants. ORY REDDING played football at North Shore High School in Houston. In his senior year in 1999, he was named USA Today’s Defensive Player of the Year and was a consensus All-American choice. He also excelled in track and field, winning the state Class 5A title in the discus as a junior and senior (career best toss of 193’9”). He was a standout UT Longhorn defensive end who subsequently had an illustrious career in the NFL for the Detroit Lions, the Seattle Seahawks, the Baltimore Ravens, the Indianapolis Colts and the Arizona Cardinals. With the opportunities presented to him to pursue a career in pro-bowl, he put his degree on hold but never lost his passion and commitment to education. In 2012 he and his wife, Priscilla, made a $100,000 donation to the University of Texas at Austin to endow the Cory and Priscilla Redding Family Scholarship. The endowment offers financial assistance to incoming first-year students to pursue majors in the College of Education. The first two students were accepted in 2013 and graduated in May, 2017. Cory Redding also finished up his degree and walked with the same graduates endowed by his Foundation. The Foundation looks for high school graduates from Cory’s high school, North Shore, but has opened the pool of applicants up to other Houston area high school graduates, and across the country as well. To date, nine students have been awarded scholarships, with three more slated to receive their degrees in May 2018. The Reddings continue their financial support for the Scholarship Foundation, hoping to increase the number and level of support for future students. An army of sports glitterati responded to the Redding’s invitation to participate in a Celebrity Bowling Tournament to support the Scholarship Foundation at High 5 in Lyle Sendlein played in 50 games while at Texas, and Lakeway. Some of them are he started in his final 26 games. He was a two-time featured here! all-conference performer as center in the Big 12. He started for the 2005 National Championship team and helped the Longhorns set an NCAA single-season record with 652 total points scored and a UT singleseason record with 6,657 total offensive yards. He subsequently signed with the Arizona Cardinals.

Kasey Studdard helped anchor the offensive line for the Longhorns in 2006 and went on to help win the national championship against USC at the Rose Bowl. Studdard garnered second team All Big 12 honors for his performance. In his final year at Texas, he started all 13 games and was voted team captain by his teammates. Studdard was drafted by the Houston Texans in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

WHO DOESN’T love a good skin care product? If you’ve ever been treated to a facial you’ll surely remember how great your skin felt after. Women often purchase their foundation from the department store simply for the gift with purchase. Everyone is looking for hope in a bottle, but what is the hallmark of a great skincare product? Believe it or not, it isn’t price. While the counters of Neiman Marcus are filled with $300 lotions and potions in shiny packages, the pretty box doesn’t make them worth the price. Fresh Dermatology carries shelves full of products which have won awards from New Beauty, Allure, and InStyle Magazine for $200 or less. Even the drugstore carries a few good products in the $10-20 price range, you just have to know what to look for. It’s also not celebrity endorsement. From Adam Levine to Cindy Crawford, famous people love to give skincare advice. Paid endorsements drive up the price of a product but mean little in terms of results. You wouldn’t come to a dermatologist for advice about your music career, so why would you take medical advice from a musician? The hallmark of a great skin care product is scientific proof. A good product will come backed by scientific evidence that it is safe, effective, and convenient to use. At Fresh Dermatology, products from around the globe have been hand selected by a board-certified dermatologist because they have shown proven benefits in clinical trials. Come in to Fresh Dermatology and let the staff help you find a scientifically proven product you can’t wait to use. 1008 RR 620 S., Ste 101, Lakeway, Texas 512-615-5600 www.freshdermatology.com

IGITAL DENTISTRY IS BASED RIGHT HERE IN AUSTIN! One of the leaders of the industry is Dr. Todd Ehrlich. Dr. Ehrlich has been on the forefront of digital dentistry for 15 years and is a consultant for the biggest and most innovative companies in dentistry. His passion for high-tech dentistry has given him the opportunity to lecture across the U.S. and internationally to thousands of dentists. He completes live patient demonstrations at the annual American Dental Association meeting where thousands of dentists discover the attributes of digital dentistry. As in any industry, dentistry benefits by going digital. Dr. Ehrlich explains: “Patients want the best technology, and I believe digital dentistry is the way to go. We no longer need impressions or two visits to complete our crowns and veneers. We simply scan the teeth into a computer, design the restorations in a computer program, and then mill them. It is simple, fast, and extremely accurate. The best thing is that the patient does NOT have to come back. No temporary! Done! My favorite cases are our one-day makeovers: veneers in a day! Digital dentistry also includes techniques for diagnosing: X-rays. Digital x-rays have come a long way and most dentists are using them, but what makes Dr. Ehrlich stand apart is that he utilizes three-dimensional x-rays much like a CT scanner. This allows him to digitally plan dental implants and diagnose tooth problems that are very difficult to see on traditional x-ray views. He is one of the few general dentists in the US to even have this capability. Dr. Ehrlich opened a new office and training facility at the Westlake Dermatology Building on Bee Caves Road. The

Digital Enamel Education Center has taught doctors from around the country and locally. Dr. Ehrlich explains, “Because I am at the forefront of technical dentistry, we were able to build a new facility that represents that in the Westlake Dermatology Building. I am glad to call the area my home and help my neighbors with the highest technology in dentistry.” Smile Designs • Todd Ehrlich, DDS 8825 Bee Caves Road Suite E, Austin, Texas 78746 (In the Westlake Dermatology Building) www.WestlakeSmileDesigns.com (512) 263-8332

N NOVEMBER 4th, SAFE, a merger of Austin Children’s Shelter and SafePlace, presented its annual gala, A Night in Havana. Although the Hyatt Regency couldn’t quite reproduce the crumbling colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, and the colorful food and flower stalls were absent, there was a sense of 1930s and ‘40s Havana, a hot destination for American celebrities, pleasure seekers and even mobsters who gravitated to Havana for the gambling, fine dining and especially for the fine drinking, illegal in the U.S. during the prohibition era. Board Chair and Emcee Michael Simons spoke passionately about the need to change American male culture and about the growing threat of the sex trade in Austin that increasingly targets

MAGINE” was the theme of the 2017 Dell Children’s Gala, presented by the Nyle Maxwell Family of Dealerships at the Austin Convention Center’s Grand Ballroom on January 27th. The imaginative centerpieces provided by David Kurio Designs and the lighting, video and audio effects engineered by Ilios Lighting Designs transformed the Grand Ballroom into a space of magic and intimacy. Some things simply defy the imagination. They range across the spectrum of life experience and include moments that offer intense joy and, at the other end, moments of horror and grief. In a nightmarish sequence of events on Father’s Day, Blake and Jennifer Bertling’s three children and one of their friends were driving with the Bertling children’s grandmother when they were involved in a gruesome car accident. The wreckage was so severe that the EMS team at first thought that all passengers had perished. The Bertling’s daughter, 7-year old Bethany, 12-year old Tristan Gonzales and 77-year old Ann Bertling died at the scene.

Working feverishly, first responders found 10-year old Christian and five-year old Landon Bertling still alive but with unimaginable traumatic injuries. Christian suffered an internal decapitation. With the exception of the spinal cord, all the ligaments and associated structures in the neck that attach the skull to the spine had been severed, although his head was still attached to his body. Landon’s internal injuries included a ruptured stomach, multiple lacerations to the liver, a crushed spleen, bruising and hematoma of the bowel, a broken scapula and both clavicles, broken ribs and fractures to the pelvis. He also had a hole in his heart. There was physical pain and emotional grief beyond measure. Onstage in the Ballroom that evening, Blake and Jennifer Bertling, with Christian and Landon and first responders by their sides, recounted their story and their heartfelt thanks to Dell Children’s Hospital for the life-saving treatment their boys received. “Imagine the difference you can make in the life of a child.” This was the theme of the evening, and guests let their imaginations and their bids soar, raising an astonishing $1.6 million, showing once again just how much this city believes in and supports Dell Children’s Medical Center and the children they serve.

ACK THE BLUE Gala was the title of the 8th Annual Lakeway Police Foundation Gala, hosted at the Lakeway Resort and Spa. Presented by Lexus of Lakeway, this annual benefit provides a critical source of funding, outside the City of Lakeway’s budget, to support the officers that protect and serve the Lakeway community. This year’s gala was one of the most successful ever, raising $78,000 and included the live auction item of an adorable German Shepard puppy donated by Lakeway Veterinary Clinic! Winning bidders were David Lyne and Amber Hart Lyne. In the last year, funds raised have helped family members of officers killed in the line of duty. The state of Texas lost 11 officers last year. Police run into gunfire as civilians run to take cover, and Lakeway is the city that gives more to families of deceased officers than any other city in the state of Texas. Mike Olsen was honored at the Gala as the 2017 Lakeway Police Department Employee of the Year. OMEN AUSTIN presented a series of preview parties hosted by generous Komen Austin donors in several communities. At an elegant party hosted presented by Steve and Anne Marie Pyle at The Frog Pad Kitchen & Bath Showroom, guests were treated to an exclusive dining experience created by Chef Goldie Radojevich, a James Beard nominee for Women in Culinary Excellence with an 18-year career as a renowned private Chef. As Executive Director Suzanne Stone revealed, “Last year 135 women found out they had breast cancer because of a mammogram funded by donations to Komen Austin. They now have a chance to fight this disease because of the investment so many people made. Without those funds, it’s likely those women wouldn’t have known about their cancer until it was too late.” Both Stone and Development Director Kelly Newberg shared personal stories of others served by Komen Austin. Courtney Urukalo spoke of her journey battling Lobular Breast Cancer. Instead of having clearly defined tumors, Lobular Breast Cancer presents with tiny tendrils of cancer that spread throughout the body and cannot be surgically removed. This form of breast cancer also does not respond to chemotherapy. Courtney considers herself a “Breast Cancer Thriver” and is hopeful that the drugs she takes will be successful. Susanne Stone also used the occasion to promote the 2018 Komen Gala, The Big Pink Give, to be held on April 6th at the Hotel Granduca, “The Big Pink Give is a twist on a traditional gala. At this event, donors have the opportunity not only to make a financial impact on the Austin community through their generosity but they will also have the chance to give once-in-a-lifetime experiences to breast cancer survivors, fighters, thrivers and their families.” For tickets visit komenaustin.org/events/bigpinkgive/

FTER THE mix-and-mingle cocktail hour, the formal program opened with remarks by Breakthrough Board Member Hector Ruiz. Hector de Jesus Ruiz Cardenas is the chairman and CEO of Advanced Nanotechnology Solutions, Inc. and former CEO and executive chairman of the semiconductor company Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. He spoke eloquently of his singular, and most extraordinary, life story. He was born in the border town of Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico and, as a youngster; he shined shoes in Mexico for six years. As a teenager, he walked across the border every day to attend high school in nearby Eagle Pass. He graduated valedictorian just three years after Brian and Carolyn DeRoeck beginning to learn English. Kelly and John Breedan, Event Host Committee Ruiz earned a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. from Rice University. Armed with the power of these degrees, he launched his stellar career. In his remarks, he credits Abby Fleiss, Breakthrough’s Chief the support he received from Program Officer; Breakthrough students others and the fact that he Wilbur Jaimes and Lawrence Navarrete was blessed with an incredChris Carmouche, Tammy and Eddy Young Mina Mora, Cristian Palacios, Ricardo Apanco, Samantha Medrano, ible amount of good luck for Keilen Heacock, Sarah Sheppard his success. It was, however, incredibly difficult… “like threading a thousand needles in a row.” As he pondered the struggles of so many in our society who try, against daunting odds, to make their way, he has often wondered

how his experience of “threading a thousand needles in a row” could be institutionalized. He emphatically believes that Breakthrough offers this institutional solution. In Central Texas, only 6% of middle school students from low-income communities earn a college degree. To combat this trend, Breakthrough makes a 12-year commitment to help these children become the first in their families to graduate from college. Through a combination of extended learning, comprehensive advising, mentorship and leadership experiences, Breakthrough is there, every step of the way, to ensure their students achieve the ultimate prize… a college degree. Breakthrough students are graduating from college at 5X the rate of their peers. “To everyone out there with dreams, here’s what I have to say: keep that fire burning. And to Breakthrough, my own, personal fire starter, thank you from the bottom of my heart.” These were the electrifying words spoken to 1,200 supporters of Breakthrough by Grecia Lopez, Junior at Texas Tech University and a Breakthrough student, as she detailed her Breakthrough journey at the Beat the Odds concert under the stars at Stubb’s BBQ featuring Country Music favorite Pat Green. According to Executive Director Michael Griffith, “Together, we raised more than $470,000 in sponsorships, ticket sales and donations—a new record for Breakthrough. Our work simply would not be possible without your support. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for our sponsors, especially AMD and Bank of America/U.S. Trust; event chairs, Amber Carden, Mary Garwood Yancy and Howard Yancy; the host committee; our wonderful emcee, Board Member Hector Ruiz, and everyone who attended, donated and shared in our celebration.”

The 10th Annual Austin Modern Home Tour STORY BY EMILY ERGAS PHOTOS BY ADOBE MODERN HOMES, JESSICA PAGES, RYAN FARNAU

HIS YEAR marks the 10th Annual Austin Modern Home Tour, a showcase of spectacular examples of modern architecture, design, construction and decor throughout Austin neighborhoods. On Saturday, February 24th from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m., meet the architects, builders and design professionals that conceptualized and executed the 12 homes selected this year. “Ten years ago, when I started the Modern Home Tour, there was almost no modern architecture at all in Austin,” says founder Krisstina Wise of GoodLife Luxury. “I reached out to six architects about the idea of a tour and that first year, we had almost 500 attendees, so we knew Austin was interested and wanted to learn more.” “We’ve seen our impact grow and now, around 1,500 people attend each year,” noted James Leasure, tour partner and producer. His company, Modern Architecture + Design Society, produces Modern Home Tours across the country that have garnered 9,000 visitors attending the annual tours to date.

“We are really starting to help our fellow Austin residents not just to ‘see’ modern but also to truly understand that modern is more than a narrow style of architecture,” adds Leasure. Designed by the Michael Hsu Office of Architecture and built by Adobe Modern Homes, one sculptural modern-style condominium seeks to provide a solution to the “Missing Middle” in Austin—small and mid-sized multi-family residential buildings in the highly-coveted Zilker neighborhood. To embody the spirit of South Austin, natural materials were utilized for custom steel shelves and a stove hood, leather cabinet pulls, and honed marble countertops that extend from the kitchen to master bathroom. Natural light plays a huge part in the design as do floor-to-ceiling custom steel windows and a 20-foot sliding door that opens the West wall to a private courtyard. Nicknamed the sideSTEP House, another home on the tour takes the challenge of designing within the existing environment seriously by side-stepping a Live Oak tree in the home’s courtyard and packing major style and performance into a modest footprint.

From Newcastle Homes and Matt Fajkus Architecture, this Energy Star 3.0 certified home features an 18-SEER Nest controlled premium Bosch HVAC system, foam insulation beneath a standing seam metal roof and an intelligent floor plan with multi-purpose rooms designed to maximize the functionality of every space. Bright and airy, the interiors are thoughtfully connected with the outdoors and balance light and flow with privacy and definition of spaces. Soaring ceilings and expansive panes of high performance windows and sliders give way to the integrated feeling of indoor-outdoor living. Some homes needed to adhere to stringent guidelines such as the Design Hound home in Hyde Park. The homeowners looked to Design Hound to create space for their growing family with a first and second floor addition to a historic home built in 1927.

1009 Gaston Avenue / Cornerstone Architects Photos by Jessica Pages

The team made several concise choices including maintaining the original design of the front façade by growing the footprint backwards, locating the first floor living and dining rooms and second floor bedrooms at the rear and mimicking the window spacing of the surrounding historic homes on the north and east side additions. The result is a thoroughly modern home that retains respect for the history of the original structure. A sloping lot and an unsightly neighboring building presented some challenges for Cornerstone Architects’ home along Shoal Creek. To take advantage of the right-toleft slope, the garage was designed on the lower level while extending the main level above to maximize the views and light. A large, protected oak allowed for a private courtyard off the master suite and a mid-level courtyard terracing down to the pool. This contemporary, multi-level home provides a tranquil treehouse effect near the heart of downtown Austin. As for the future of the Austin Modern Home Tour, Leasure says, “Our primary goal every year is to expand on our unofficial theme of ‘Experience, Educate, & Explore,’ to provide not only a fun day of seeing bleeding-edge architecture and design but also to provide valuable insight on what it means to live in Austin today.” “Modern was such a novelty, but now it’s the standard,” Wise says. “I think as the tour continues, you’ll see more technology incorporated into the design. Just as technology is evolving and pushing the edge, so should modern architecture.”

HE EVENING began with a sunset cocktail reception on the outdoor patio of the Austin City Limits Moody Theater and transitioned inside to an elegant dinner and program that included several powerful testimonials about how the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF) has an impact throughout many East Austin communities. The exciting live auction included items such as a trip to New York City for a VIP experience to the Broadway production of Hamilton, a private, in-home dinner for 12 personally catered by Uchi owner Chef Tyson Cole, and a round of golf at Spanish Oaks Village with 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia. All brought in generous bids ranging in the tens of thousands of dollars. Musical guest Jake Owen and his 6-piece band capped the evening by taking to the stage with their Florida roots-reggae infused country sound. The crowd of 1,500 was quickly out of their chairs, dancing between the tables, and singing along. The 15-song setlist included crowd favorites like “Barefoot Blue Jean Night” and “American Country Love Song,” along with several unexpected, but warmly embraced, covers such as Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire and “Let’s Talk Dirty in Hawaiian” by John Prine. Roddick began ARF in 2000 and stays motivated by realizing parents are better able to provide financially by being able to work a few more hours a day, knowing their children are in a safe and enriching environment. “So, it’s not just the kid; it’s the entire family. That’s the part that’s become a lot more real since I’ve become a father.”

Winners of the Lynn Seymour Award for Expressive Dance at the Royal Ballet of London with judges: Kevin O’Hare, Director of the Royal Ballet; Ellie Young, 2nd place; Dame Monica Mason, former Director of the Royal Ballet; Kele Roberson, 1st place; Liam Boswell, 3rd place

58 Waterways | Spring 2018

N NOVEMBER 13th 2017, Kele Roberson won the Lynn Seymour Award for Expressive Dance at the Royal Ballet of London, England. The Award was established by the late Nina Finburgh in honor of Lynn Seymour, one of the Royal Ballet’s most celebrated dramatic ballerinas. The award debuted in 2000 and was originally judged by Seymour herself. To compete for the Award, 2nd year students were invited to perform a solo of their choosing, prepared on their own and without any coaching. When explaining why he chose his performance piece, Kele said “I immediately thought of Vater, as it demonstrates a ceaseless exploration of identity and search for belonging. The choreography of this piece is very different from my comfortable way of moving, so it required a lot of personal exploration on how I would communicate its message to the audience”. Dame Monica Mason and Kevin O’Hare, former and current Director’s of the Royal Ballet, presided as judges for the event. Mr. O’Hare called this his “favorite competition of the year”. Dance Institute director, Linda Holland, visited the Royal Ballet shortly after the win in November. “It is an honor and dream for me to have a student at the Royal Ballet. I was thrilled to be able to watch class and meet Kele’s Instructors. After class, Mr. Lewis, one of Kele’s instructors, shared how well Kele was doing in his classical work and included an assessment of the amazing talent Kele exhibited in contemporary”. This was no surprise for Holland since Dance Institute excels in offering training in classical ballet as well as contemporary, jazz, tap and ballroom. When asked how DI’s year was going, Holland replied, “We are having a very successful year! We are currently working very hard to prepare for Youth America Grand Prix in February. We will be competing in both classical and contemporary choreography.” YAGP provides an unparalleled opportunity for dancers to win scholarships to the top ballet schools and companies in the world. Kele Roberson’s 2017 YAGP Gran Prix win opened the doors for his acceptance to the Royal Ballet in London.
