PARKS & RECREATION ADVISORY BOARD The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board exists to advise and make recommendations to the City Council concerning policy matters related to the establishment, maintenance and operation of the City’s parks and recreation programs. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meets the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm in at City Hall, located at 550 Landa Street.

PROGRAM & EVENT POLICIES Cancellations

We reserve the right to cancel a class/activity that does not meet minimum registration requirements. Programs and classes with low registration are cancelled a minimum of five days prior to the class start date.

Waiting Lists

If registering for a class that is full, your name can be placed on a waiting list. This does not guarantee a spot, but individuals will be contacted if an opening becomes available.

Refunds

Cancellations of programs or events made one week (7 days) prior to the start of a program will receive a full credit to their account or a refund will be issued. NO REFUNDS will be given within seven days or after the start of a program or event. Registration fees will not be prorated for partial attendance of any program.

Photo Release

The New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department routinely takes photos and videos of participants in recreation activities, programs and special events. These photos and/or videos may be used for promotional purposes. Be aware that by participating, you are granting the City of New Braunfels the right to use and publish your image or your minor child's image.

ARBORETUM An arboretum is a place for the study, display and preservation of trees. Thanks to the foresight and devotion of members of the Guada Coma Garden Club, Landa Park was designated as an arboretum in 1982. In 2007, the Arboretum was named after William and Dolores Schumann, in honor of their endless devotion to this botanical jewel.

ARBORETUM GUIDE SPOTLIGHT Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba

#1 in the William & Dolores Schumann Arboretum Guide. The ginkgo tree is one of the oldest living tree species and has been found to live to be over 1,000 years old. Ginkgo trees in Texas can grow a height of 35-45 feet and have a 30 foot spread in canopy. The unique fan shaped leaves and yellow foliage in the fall make it a good specimen tree. The tree requires full sun and a moist, well- drained loamy soil. The ginkgo tree is extremely slow-growing and only the male trees are planted in the United States as a landscape ornamental. The females produce extremely foul-smelling messy fruit used in many Asian herbal remedies. This tree is regarded as a â€œliving fossilâ€? due to fossilized imprints leaves of the tree that have been found worldwide dating back 270 million years ago. Ginkgo is used in traditional medicine to treat circulatory disorders and to enhance memory.

Whether you are an individual or group looking for a one-time event or an ongoing project, we have an opportunity for you. Volunteer opportunities include: invasive plant removal, “micro” picking, trail maintenance, mulching, park playground builds, landscape bed adoption, working special events, nature programs and watering trees. The Comal Trails Alliance is dedicated to creating a system of trails connecting communities and providing opportunities for education, health and enjoyment of the natural resources of Comal County. The group hosts workdays throughout the spring at the Dry Comal and Panther Canyon Trails.

The City Tube Chute is a water slide carved into the side of the City’s dam on the Comal River. It diverts tubers around the dam as they float the river; it is the longest of its kind in the world.

Located on the Guadalupe River, Cypress Bend Park is a great area for fishing and swimming and is the last public exit for tubers on the Guadalupe River.

Built in 1887, this impressive Whipple Truss Roadway Bridge is one of six remaining in the country. Spanning 640 feet above the Guadalupe River, the structure is now enjoyed by pedestrians and bicyclists.

Fischer Park, the largest park in the New Braunfels Park System, offers a variety of amenities for discovery and exploration. Stroll or run around the park on over two miles of greenway trails where fresh air, sunshine and nature are abundant. Relax at the two fishing ponds, splash at the sprayground, enjoy the playgrounds or take in the views of New Braunfels from the 62-acre hilltop park.

Main Plaza dates to the City’s 1845 founding and is a focal point of the New Braunfels community. The plaza encompasses 0.6 acres in historic Downtown New Braunfels. The plaza holds a designation as a Lone Star Legacy Park by the Texas Recreation and Park Society.

Market Plaza was founded in 1845 by settlers of New Braunfels. Settlers used the Plaza for tent shows to buy, sell, trade and display produce and products. The plaza features trees and two benches. The New Braunfels Parks Foundation is currently raising funds to renovate the plaza.

Morningside Park is a 16-acre park located next to Morningside Elementary. The park features a playground, walking trails, children's bike path, a nature play area and gaga ball pit.

The County Line Memorial Trail is a linear trail that extends 2.18 miles. Amenities along the trail include trees, rest areas with benches and bridges connecting surrounding neighborhood parks to the trail.

The Dry Comal Hike and Bike Trail winds through several different vegetation habitats. Established in 2003 by the Parks and Recreation Department and volunteer groups, the trail offers great recreation and wildlife viewing opportunities.

The Trail covers over 49 acres and is home to many native plants and wildlife. The gently sloping pedestrian trail leads visitors approximately .8 of a mile through the Balcones Escarpment.

HAVE YOUR PARTY WITH US! Host your next birthday party or special event with us and create memories that last a lifetime! Party packages are available at the Fischer Park Nature Education Center and at the Landa Recreation Center and Miniature Golf, depending on the season. Basic Party Packages start at $175 and include a fun atmosphere and admission to the facility. Packages and themes vary per facility. NEW BRAUNFELS PARK SYSTEM

PARK RULES • The use of personal grills is prohibited in all City parks. • Glass containers are prohibited. • Music, excessive noise and disturbing conduct are not allowed. • Pets must be on a leash at all times; leashes can be extended to a maximum of six feet in length. • Reservations are required for pavilions. • Park Rangers will collect a fee for individual picnic tables (non-residents only) from Easter weekend-October 31. • Picnicking, wading and swimming allowed only in designated areas. • Only free-standing canopies without bottoms are permitted for use. • It is prohibited to stake anything into the ground. • Skateboarding, in-line skating and roller skating are permitted on sidewalks only. • Walkers have the right-of-way on multi-purpose trails. • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is allowed in Landa Park, Fischer Park and Camp Comal only. • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is not allowed in parking lots or within 25 feet of park roadways. • Use of tobacco products is prohibited on or within 50 feet of any outdoor Cityowned youth athletic field, skate park, playground or playground equipment. • Metal detectors are not allowed in City parks. • All habitat and wildlife are protected. • Due to environmental impact, sports and activities may be prohibited.
