A Letter to Our Readers

Hey there, Little Red Riding Hood You sure are looking good You’re everything that a big bad wolf could want…

– Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Li’l Red Riding Hood

Gotta make at least passing mention of relationship stuff leading into the February issue of a fine natural magazine, although those lines might not, in the current environment, have been the best choice. (Take note – they’re by someone else.) That would be Domingo “Sam” Samudio, a loco Dallas Chicano who became Sam the Sham. The song came out in 1966, as the first rays of the dawning of the Age of Aquarius were peeking through and Women’s Lib was gathering up a head of steam. (Was that sexist? Wasn’t meant to be, honest. That’s what it was called – by someone else.)

Wolves are monogamous.

They mate for life, so it’s ironic they’re the popular archetype for guys who do anything but. Better to call ‘em dogs, roaming the neighborhood looking for trouble to get into – but, hey, a dog’s got personality, and personality goes a long way. (That’s by – you know.) –Michael Abedin

uick, what’s the one thing folks (especially Texas folks) get as opinionated about as politics and religion? Football? Okay, the other thing. Yep. Food. Mexican food, Tex Mex, comfort food, southern food, barbecue, Cajun, Thai, vegetarian, pizza, craft beer, the best margarita, on and on. They all have their true believers, as devoted as any Baptist or Methodist. In fact, should you decide to stop being an -ist on the spiritual side, becoming some variety of foodist is a handy way to scratch the itch, the need to proselytize someone over to your way of thinking. After all, it’s not that big a step from evangelical to (wait for it) – vegangelical.

Wording your eats.

One upon a time, your choices were simple – carnivore (someone who eats animals), herbivore, (someone who eats animals with herbs), or omnivore (someone who eats at the Omni Hotel buffet). Now, there’s vegetarian (eats vegetables), fruitarian (eats fruit), airarian (eats only air – a real thing), deadarian (been an airarian for a long time), vegan (from the planet Vega), or freegan (eats food bummed from other people). If you care more about good food made from scratch and less about what you call yourself, you might be a foodatarian – or just hungry. Good news is you can still find a few places in and around Austin that won’t hit you up for a $20 hipster burger with a side of beet fries and a $15 kalearita – and one of them is in far South Austin.

Brooklyn’s menu honors that tradition of good, hearty, well flavored food, from gumbo and blackened snapper to seafood enchiladas (all from the Gulf ), fried green tomatoes and vegetarian tacos to chicken and waffles, Cajun style Eggs Benedict and huevos divorciados to (yeah, it’s Texas) chicken fried steak. There’s also catering, live music on weekends, and drink specials during the week, and the patio’s open for events and private parties. Desserts are made in-house, and everything is from scratch – the only thing resembling a container of food-service vegetables might be ketchup, and there are no pre-made, MSG-laced sauces. There are plenty of variations of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options, and anything can be prepared with allergies or sensitivities in mind. There’s also something you pretty much have to leave Austin to see – or not see. There’s not a condo in sight. There are, however, railroad tracks right across Main Street, and old hitching posts still in front of the hundred-plus year old building, in case your Valentine’s date is on horseback. Far, far south Austin.

Buda, actually. (Byoo-da, if you got here five minutes ago, not Boo-da.) Brooklyn’s Down South restaurant and bar (formerly Cleveland’s) is a fixture on Buda’s Main Street, all four or five blocks of it – a local watering hole and family dining spot serving lunch and dinner seven days a week, with courtyard dining and a popular Saturday and Sunday brunch. Chef Andrea Garcia sets a menu of traditional American, Cajun, and Southern food, and traditional Mexican dishes that draw on her family’s Mexican and Spanish heritage. (Her molé rocks, if you’re lucky enough to catch it on a special occasion.) These are all cuisines from cultures that took basic ingredients and created dishes using the ingredients they had on hand – a tradition of spices, sauces, and seasonings handed down over generations, meant to enhance the available local sources of vegetables and meats.

FEBRUARY 1–25, 2018 Kerr Arts and Cultural Center In an innovative and visually stunning exhibit, six Austin-based artists come together to offer a sweet taste of the potential breadth and range of digital art.

Earth Dog It’s the truth that they all look for Something they must keep alive Will the wolf survive? – Los Lobos, Will the Wolf Survive

L

ong ago, it’s said, the Buddha called all the animals to him, and the twelve that responded each got a year on the Chinese calendar. In each twelve-year period, each critter got one of the Five Elements assigned to it – Fire, Water, Earth, Metal (Air), and Wood. (Meaning when you’re sixty, you get to do your original year again.) Since it’s based on the lunar calendar, the new year starts anywhere from late January to mid-February. (Meaning if you were born in one of those months, better check something more authoritative than your hot and sour soup-stained placemat at the Chinese restaurant to find your persuasion.) February 16, we finally get to kick out the Fire Rooster, and let in the Year of the Earth Dog, muddy paws and all. With any luck, he’ll have that dang rooster in his mouth.

Woman’s best friend.

The Earth Dog’s not so distance ancestor and soul buddy, the wolf, was the first of the wild ones to creep cautiously into the circle of the fire and make a bond with hunter-gatherers, brothers and sisters in spirit and in the ways of the pack. The wolf’s descendants may be man’s best friends, but they’ve always been pretty tight with the wild ways of warrior women and priestesses of the Earth, who are ushering in the Earth Dog with something that, from L.A. to D.C., bears a distinct resemblance to a vengeance. It ain’t always pretty, but neither is watching a pack bring down prey – or defend turf. On the one-year anniversary of the Women’s March to protest – well, you know – there were plenty of pink pussycat hats and slogans, and some of the best slogans adorned the pooches that got to take the walk.

8

Speak!

Here’s a sampling of what fourlegged marchers had to say on their protest, umm – blankets? Yeah, I’m a B****! The first word I learned was ‘No!’ The personal fave? This has been the worst seven years of my life. Those are some truths worth looking for, huh? In the spirit of truth, the Me Too movement didn’t burst onto the scene in 2017 courtesy of irate actresses. It was a hashtag-free movement started over ten years ago by a Black woman, Tarana Burke, who wanted to provide support for women and girls of color who’d experienced sexual assault – and who had no publicists, lawyers, or reporters waiting for the next scandal.

In the spirit of the Earth Dog…

Friday afternoon, four o’clock, left lane of Mopac. Blazing along, ten or fifteen miles an hour – when you move at all. Your mind wanders, and one of the things it wanders to, seeing as how they’re right there next to you, is whether maybe there’s enough room between those white posts marking off the nearly empty express lane to slide between them, maybe cheat the TxDot bandits out of a toll. Probably not, you decide, without grazing one and doing a bit of mischief to your paint job. Then you notice they appear to be plastic, leading you to wonder if maybe, just maybe, there’s some give to them – when your question is answered by a guy (or maybe gal) in a big ol’ black pickup truck a few car lengths ahead, who suddenly breaks from the pack and runs right over one, roaring off down the toll lane, free as a wild dog. You figger either someone was really late for something really important, or had just plain had enough. Either way, they apparently decided if they got caught – it was worth it. And that’s how the Wolf will survive.

HOW TO ROCK LOVE by Folade Speaks I find the best way to love someone is not to change them, but instead, help them reveal the greatest version of themselves. – Steve Maraboli

I

create most of the content for the digital sign out front of Nature’s Treasures, often pulling a monthly Oracle card for each astrological sign. In January, I pulled a card for Global Humanity Theme for 2018. A card from the Sacred Geometry Activations Oracle Deck card jumped out – Compassion. Searching words of wisdom about compassion, I found the quotation above from Steve Maraboli.

In searching for compassion, therein is Love.

In an interview about love vs. attachment, Buddhist author Tenzing Paloma Jetsunma reminds us, Genuine Love says, I love you, therefore I want you to be happy. If that includes me, great, if not, I just want your happiness. Genuine Love is holding very gently, nurturing but allowing things to flow. This leads to helping each other, selflessly, whether love is romantic, family-based, or daily compassionate practice.

One way to develop an attribute like love or compassion is to locate the chakra that governs it, and nourish the attribute with crystals and sensory experiences that build that chakra. Focusing on love and compassion, you can isolate Anahata (heart, compassion), Svadhisthana (sacral, emotions, emotional attachments, letting go) and Manipura (solar plexus, willpower and trust) chakras as focal points to guide your sensory choices. From that awareness, you can experiment with sound (notes and frequencies, crystal and Tibetan bowls and chimes); scent (essential oils and resins, sweetgrass); sight (color therapy); and corresponding activities. There’s a vast collection of resources to explore, so find what works for you and for your loved ones.

A few suggestions:

Earth Keepers. One of the Mothers of the crystal family, comprised of Oneness energy, they like to live outside. Placing of an Earthkeeper in your garden, you connect to the sacred grid of Mother Earth, and the Flower of Life connecting us all. Crystals in the Idocrase Family. Such crystals as vesuvianite and tanzanite are charged with energy to unify humanity, as well as our individual inner fractal systems. Sunstone. A great pick for releasing cords or unhealthy attachments between two people, supports the Manipura Chakra because it attracts the sun and its Life Force, brightening your energy and raising your willpower. Crystal Gridding. An aesthetically pleasing and powerful technique for using crystals and minerals. Be as free with your grid as possible, though you can find grids already laid out with formations of pyramids and sacred geometry. From there, work with corresponding crystals for what you wish to magnetize. Quartz and copper are awesome Master Crystals for your grid. As you work, consider the grid an extension of your heart. Set intentions uplifting the destinies of yourself and others. When searching for crystals that help you love selflessly, without a set outcome, consider color families of the heart (pink and green), solar plexus (yellow), and sacral (orange) chakras. In addition to crystals boosting compassionate Love, having coral in your collection can unify your community. Michael Newton’s classic, Journey of Souls: Case Studies of the Life Between Lives, confirms what I’ve witnessed through meditation, medium work, and dream states. We come to Earth to manifest a core purpose – a life of action based on responsibility, balance, integrity. May we all create loving and compassionate spaces in which we create the greatest versions of ourselves. SPACE DOCTOR

Keeping your home or business healthy – by design

by Michael Abedin

E

ver walk into a restaurant, business, home, or any other space that was as neat, clean, and generically tasteful as a dentist’s waiting room – and feel like energy was being sucked from you fast as that thing the dentist sticks in your mouth to suck up spit? Couldn’t get out soon enough, could you? There are lots of reasons a space feels off. Some older downtown buildings (especially those a part of Austin’s red light district a century or so ago) are said to have a spook or two floating around, but it doesn’t take a haunting to throw off the energetic flow of a commercial or residential space – and it doesn’t take an exorcist to fix it. On a quantum level, down where particles that make up atoms play, all matter is energy. Stands to reason, then, that a room or building has an energy system, just like the human bodies that inhabit it – and, like those bodies, it can get out of whack.

When it does, call the doctor.

Good news is, the energy flow of a space can be rebalanced, just like a human body’s – and without consulting a shaman. Good designers have known since someone first drew pictures on the wall of a cave that the art and flow of a space is in the way it’s embellished to reflect, enhance, and flow with the energy of its occupants. Lenore Callahan is an Austin-based designer who’s worked with clients and spaces from suites at the Four Seasons to studio condo units, and looks at designing a space the way a holistic healer looks at working on a client. “The idea is to get and keep energy flowing and harmonious, and blend the energy of the space and the client, since they reflect each other.” Reflections work both ways, she explains – your home, business, or event space is a reflection of you, and you reflect it right back. If it’s off, you’ll be off, and so will your guests – and your clients, patients, and customers. (Imagine your yoga studio, practitioner office, or event space with a professional designer’s touch – and with the new, prosperous clients it attracts.)

The obvious question.

Feng shui, right? Wrong. She’s quick to point out she’s not a feng shui practitioner. Traditional feng shui is a complex art that may or may not take beauty and aesthetics into consideration, and holistic practitioners who do space clearing, valuable as it can be, may or may not have good taste in design. Over the years, however, an experienced designer

develops an intuitive feel, one that can apply the principles of tools like feng shui or sacred geometry without calling it that – and without the rules and limitations that come along with such labels. Like a holistic practitioner, a good designer knows every client is different, and knows where to reach in their bag of tricks for the right juju to make the magic work – and if you’re worried about woo-woo, the magic can work without having your designer wave a pendulum in your house or channel in Frank Lloyd Wright. (If they do, though, go for it – he was good.) Austin’s a big ol’ melting pot, boiling over. Only problem with melting pots, though, is once everything melts together, you lose your own identity. A good designer can help you find it and keep it flowing – and growing. Lenore Callahan Interior Design, (512) 522-0018, www.LenoreCallahan.com

WILD WOMEN AND WOLVES Calling Up the Sacred Feminine

by Amberlea Shelton, LPC Dearest Sacred Self: I’ve held you back, been ashamed of you, embarrassed by you, called you names, made you hide in the shadows of my psyche. I’d like to re-introduce myself, and call you back into my life. I need you now, more than ever – we need you now, more than ever. Welcome. Come, sit. Let me hold you.

I’ll tell you all the ways I’ve been afraid of you.

My ancestors were goddesses, with you at the forefront of their lives. As time passed, you weren’t safe to have around. We were humiliated, tortured, killed because of your power. Through generations, we hid you deep inside, so your words couldn’t be heard. In time, we barely heard you at all. It’s time to empower the Sacred Woman – healer, lover, conquistador of the heart, mother of life, destroyer of fear – and reawaken our Wild Woman by becoming powerful allies. When you look into the eyes of a woman next to you at work, in line, on street corners, really look at her. I know you, see your wildish nature, fiercely support you singing into the dry, deserted psychic land holding the Wild Woman’s soul, bravely moving into a place where, instead of competing with her and judging her, we ferociously empower her. The wise, inner, intuitive voice, the voice of one never born who never dies, has been called by many names and has no name. She is limitless, a creator of new life who knows what within us must die, the birth-death-birth mother, infinite cosmic goddess, sacred feminine, visionary, oracle – known by many names but taking many forms.

One of those is the Wolf Woman.

Wolves and wild women run together, howling at the moon as it waxes and wanes, a song reminding us to return to our soul, calling us home – to ourselves. All women have a secret life, a soul life deep within the psyche. When the voice of our tribe takes over, you can hear her, faintly at first, chanting a familiar tune, rattling bones,

12

dancing. She calls us back to our soul life where we know who we are, and the path we’re meant to take. La Loba, the Wolf Woman. She keeps a piercing and watchful eye over the spirit, the sacred self. Nature and the Wild Woman are on the verge of becoming extinct, but, like the wolf, she’s brave, courageous – and when awakened, creates great and powerful change. The soul life we yearn for is one of creativity, passion, freedom, deep joy. Taught to feel ashamed of the desire to feed our instinctual selves, we learned to quiet her, shut her out, keep her caged in the darkest recesses of consciousness – but she comes out at times, in fits of rage.

And we wake up to find paw prints on the floor, next to the bed.

Without her, our inner eyes become clouded, we forget who we are. Luckily, no matter how far we banish her into the desert, she cannot die, finding secret rooms and trap doors to enter through. If we listen, from time to time we hear her howling deep inside, a song from dreams of lives past. Let’s release her from the tight, suffocating collar, allow her wildish nature to heal, nurture, and restore balance. Instead of dancing nervously out of sight, girdled, reined, and muzzled, let’s slip out of the collar and courageously own our fire, our superpower. If we’re brave enough, we’ll breathe life back into her lungs and trust the wisdom of our intuitive, wise, eternal self. She’s waiting, calling, whispering, singing, howling – jolting us to remember her, begging us to allow her to return to our lives. Give her a voice. Amberlea Shelton, LPC, is a Licensed Professional Counselor, blending principles of spirituality with high professional standards of psychotherapy. Run with the wolves in her Wild Woman eight-week therapeutic group, meeting Wednesdays from Feb. 21 to Aprl 11. LITTLE WOLF

Pack, tribes, community by Katherine Barnidge I took shelter in a small village in Malawi, Africa, arriving in the back of a truck. Girls were singing, weaving in the moonlight, their voices carrying over dirt paths and the waters of the lake. I saw a pack of children each day along the road, our encounters always turning into a dance circle. Older children took turns in the middle, soloing, and we all stood around keeping the beat. Their favorite song for me (mostly because it was in English) was Who Let the Dogs Out, which they called out in the most boisterous accent, from the very center of their chests and belief in the world. Who, Who, Who, Who? Who Let the Dogs Out? Over and over, in undulating rhythms, we chanted and cheered in sheer joy and huge helpings of bravado.

Wild dogs, together.

Something echoes in me about that time, as I think about a pack, wild and communal, guiding us into the year ahead. I belonged with a pack when I was a child, in the cul-desac where I grew up. There have been moments I’ve shared in adulthood, moving in synch with others quite profoundly. There’s a life breathing inside such a thing – surrendering to the common interest because of the commonality. The pack is a force unto itself, sustained by each part. How long has it been since we lived like this? What part of it is familiar, deep inside our bodies? Perhaps we’ll find a missing part of ourselves in this Year of the Earth Dog, a year about taking grounded action. There’s intense loyalty connected with this year, celebrating and enjoying life together.

Enhancing the Year of the Little Wolf.

Get grounded. Eat well, create routine,
set intentions – the top three priorities for a successful life in anything.
Visualize effective relationships,
see yourself working well with others, let all else fall away.
Imagine finding new and exciting connections, places where you belong, wellsprings of common interest. The time of the Lone Wolf is behind us. There’s a new, collective understanding of how to use our minds, our hearts, our intentions to fuel a healthy world. There’s great power in numbers – and great momentum in joining the pack.

Katherine is a hands-on healer and spiritual healer, alive and well in Austin, holding visualization circles monthly if you want to join with her pack. KatherineBarnidge@gmail.com www.KatherineBarnidge.com

THE FUTURE OF WELLBEING An exclusive excerpt from The Healing Self, the new book by Deepak Chopra

At the end of July 2017, a

startling medical story came across television and the Internet. It was a tip-of-the-iceberg story, although few realized it at the time. There was too much background noise from the usual stream of health risks to heed – working more than fifty-five hours a week can be bad for your health, pregnant women are at higher risk of not getting enough iodine. These weren’t tip-of-the-iceberg stories–more like the drone of familiar advice most people shrug off. But one item was different. Twenty-four experts on old-age dementia – the greatest health threat around the world – were asked to assess chances for preventing every kind of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. Their conclusion, published in the prestigious British medical journal The Lancet, was that one-third of dementia cases can be prevented. There’s currently no drug treatment to cure or prevent dementia, so this was startling news on the face of it.

What was the key to preventing dementia?

14

Lifestyle changes, with different focus at every stage of life. The experts singled out nine specific factors accounting for around thirtyfive percent of cases. “To reduce risk, factors include getting an education (staying in school until age fifteen); reducing high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes; avoiding or treating hearing loss in mid-life; not smoking; getting physical exercise; reducing depression and social isolation later in life.” One item was startling – staying in school until at least fifteen. What in the world? A dreaded condition of old age reduced by doing something when you’re a teenager? It was also a little peculiar that addressing hearing loss in middle age was related to lower dementia risk. Something new was going on. If you looked closely, this story signaled a

us from middle age onward can be defeated – the secret is to act before any sign of threat appears. This is known as incremental medicine – the iceberg of which a single story about dementia is the tip. Take the seemingly strange finding about education. Experts estimate dementia could be reduced eight percent globally if kids stayed in school until fifteen, one of the biggest reductions on the list.

Tracing a long trail.

trend in medicine promising to be a major revolution. Not just in dementia, but across the board, researchers are drastically pushing back timelines of disease and life-threatening disorders – hypertension, heart disease, cancer, diabetes, even mental disorders like depression and schizophrenia. When you catch a winter cold, you notice symptoms and realize, with annoyance, you were exposed to the virus a few days earlier. The incubation period was short and invisible; only the appearance of symptoms told the tale.

Lifestyle disorders aren’t like that.

Their incubation period is invisible but very long – years, decades. This simple fact has become more critical in medical thinking. Now it looms larger perhaps than any other factor in who gets sick and who stays well. Instead of focusing on lifestyle disorders when symptoms appear, or advising prevention when high risk develops, doctors are probing into normal, healthy life twenty to thirty years earlier. A new vision of disease is emerging, telling us very good news. If you practice lifelong wellness, beginning as early as childhood, many threats attacking

The more educated you are, the more information your brain stores, and the better it accesses what you’ve learned. This buildup of information, starting in childhood, leads to something neuroscientists have identified as cognitive reserve, a boost to the brain in terms of added connections and pathways between neurons. When you have this boost, the memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is countered, because the brain has extra paths to follow if some grow weak or diseased. As medical logic goes, long trails are changing everyone’s thinking, because they exist in many if not most diseases. Not smoking, losing weight, going to the gym have benefits. But lifelong wellness isn’t the same as lowering risks for disorder A or B. Wellness is no longer just an alternative to regular prevention. It’s the iceberg, the fourhundred-pound gorilla, the elephant in the room, rolled into one. Wellness is the great hope springing up all around us. But to grasp how radically things will change, we have to back away and examine the current situation in health care, where threat increasingly overwhelms hope. POLARITY THERAPY

Tuning in to your Wireless Anatomy

by Heather Joyce Wolfe

P

olarity Therapy is a system of energy balancing involving body and energy work, including concepts of craniosacral therapy, counseling, movement, and nutrition, all based on the Five Elements of Ether, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. The science of astrology is considered, and used in relation to these elements and the chakra system. It’s based on the work of Dr. Randolph Stone, born in Austria in 1890, who integrated his work as a chiropractor, osteopath, naturopath and naprapath with Eastern concepts of energy flow in the Ayurvedic system of India, the yogic path, and Chinese and Egyptian systems of health. An avid spiritual seeker, Stone grew up Catholic, became a Lutheran Minister, and after discovering Eastern Mysticism was initiated into Shabad Yoga, the Yoga of Sound. Consequently, sacred sound can also be a part of Polarity Therapy. Wireless Anatomy is the name Dr. Stone gave his body of work – the science of energy flow in the body. He wrote five books (available on Amazon.com), practicing for sixty years in Chicago before moving to California to teach, spending most of each year in India working with those who had given up hope.

The keys to the Mystery.

The key to any Polarity session is tuning into the energy flow of the individual, discovering where the energy is blocked, and using knowledge, intuition, and guidance to create movement and balance. Sometimes this is a peaceful process, sometimes it elicits hidden memories in the subconscious, and other times it creates movement in order to free something. Practitioners always leave room for the Mystery to unfold in any given moment, on any level. Deep relaxation usually happens very quickly during a table session, allowing for a release of tension and chronic pain and often providing opportunities for awareness about changes and attitude needed for a happier, fulfilling life. Corrections to the energy system’s sacred geometry can happen effortlessly, bringing more alignment with the blueprint of the Soul and making the life purpose more apparent – Dr. Stone considered what he called Right Thinking to be of paramount importance Individual sessions generally last up to ninety minutes. Clients remain clothed and no oil is used, except when combined with massage therapy. Three types of touch may be used, also reflected on the outside in clients’ lives: Sattvic. Light touch, or off the body. Rajasic. More active, with movement such as rocking or jiggling. Tamasic. Deep contact, with cleansing effects.

The goal is balance at the client’s pace – or, more accurately, the client’s Higher Self.

Practitioners are trained in communication skills, polarity yoga, nutrition, and high levels of integrity and confidentiality. Sometimes referrals are made to other practitioners – psychotherapists, medical doctors, chiropractors, naturopaths, nutritionists. Polarity Therapy can be integrated effectively into other forms of body or energy work, including massage, shiatsu and Reiki. Many practitioners say Polarity Therapy provides a missing link, enabling them to integrate many aspects of the healing arts.

LOVING YOUR LIVER by Gwieneverea Brandon, MD How’s your liver? Not the liver you’re having for dinner, with onions and gravy, the one in your body. Most of us know we have one, but not everyone knows what it does. The liver’s one of the most important organs in the body, definitely the largest and most solid, located in the upper right abdomen tucked under the diaphragm and lower ribs. (You can feel its smooth edge about two or three finder breadths below your last rib.)

Your body’s central chemistry lab.

Your liver produces over ten thousand chemicals for direct and indirect vital functions. It’s also your poison control center and main detoxifier, neutralizing harmful substances finding their way – intentionally or unintentionally – into the body. Too many beers or martinis? Your liver neutralizes alcohol, preparing it for elimination. Work in an environment exposed to contaminated air? It helps eliminate inhaled pollutants. It has a major role in digestion, housing the gallbladder where bile, needed to digest fats, is produced, and storing Vitamins B12, A (vision), D (calcium absorption), and K (blood clotting). It stores iron and folic acid, and turns glucose (sugar) into glycogen, stored in the liver and muscle cells.

It’s vital to keep it working properly.

Too much damage can lead to hepatitis, cirrhosis, cancer, or liver failure. Your body gives signals – bloating, constipation, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, brain fog, dizziness, headaches, cramping, joint or tendon problems, menstrual problems, or blurry vision may mean your liver needs cleaning. A healthy liver can lead to increased energy, clearer skin, decrease in infections, strengthened immunity, decrease in digestive issues and irregularity, improved oral health, and increased mental clarity. To keep the liver in tip-top shape, reduce alcohol intake, stop smoking, exercise, maintain ideal body weight, and consume healthy foods. Liver-supporting foods include garlic, cruciferous and green leafy vegetables, walnuts, turmeric, avocados, and herbs – milk thistle, holy basil, dandelion root. To do a liver cleanse (typically five to twenty-one days), follow instructions from a knowledgeable health practitioner. Cleansing induces purging of stored fats, old cholesterol deposits, poisons, drug residues, and toxic waste. Probably nothing else – including a colon detox – makes a greater difference in your health. Gwieneverea Brandon, MD, and Melissa Russ-Santiago, ND, practice integrative medicine combining mainstream and natural healthcare, including chelation, IV vitamins, pain management, aesthetics, nutrition, and medical testing. Chasing Rabbits Rabbits Chasing by Christina Allen Our minds are like dogs, running through the fields chasing rabbits. Just as any small animal darting across the field or up a tree catches their attention, the unbridled mind pursues every thought that arises, without discrimination. If we think it up, the mind chases it down. There are thoughts we really don’t need to think, however, and some that lead us down dark rabbit holes. One of the most challenging aspects of personal growth is learning which rabbits to chase, and which to let go. Our thoughts craft the contours of our lives. Since most of our emotions are elicited by our thinking, the thoughts we choose to think strongly affect how we feel. A person may have inner voices that, although designed to help them avoid further pain, actually cause more.

Addictions have a seductive voice.

It says, Hey! Come on, follow me, this will make you feel better! When we let our minds grasp this thought, and engage in it emotionally, we’re off and running. Doubt has a voice that says. Oh no, you can’t do that. There are paranoid voices that keep us in fear, victim voices that allow us to rage. When we chase after these thoughts, seduced by their call, we find ourselves taken down into dark passageways. More thoughts await us there, thoughts that beat us up for having listened, thoughts that evoke dark emotions that bring on even darker thoughts. Once we engage, we become tangled in an underworld of knotted roots that refuses to let us go. This is our suffering.

Suffering, rabbit holes and stillness.

Part of the healing journey is looking within. While our thoughts are titillating, our emotions are downright seductive. Let’s say you have a history of being rejected. A friend backs out of a commitment because something in their personal life makes it impossible for them to follow through. You can listen graciously and let it go, or you can listen to

18

that rejection voice that says, This is because there’s something wrong with me. Down you go, sucked into the rejection rabbit hole, fighting with your self to resurface. If you’ve reached a point in your life where you want to change, if you’re tired of being drawn down into these vortices, the first place to look is what you’re thinking – and why. If you have unresolved issues you’ve cemented over, they still unconsciously guide your thought processes. From the shamanic perspective, we’re ancient souls having a physical experience here on planet Earth. Suffering is one of our greatest teachers on this journey. We can use it to become conscious of what in us needs to heal so we can evolve past our wounding into empowerment, or we can simply exist, and live in an unconscious hell. If you’re ready to evolve, instead of looping around in murky rabbit holes you must first look at the thoughts that drive your suffering, and ask why you’re choosing to think them. They point to what you’ve paved over, to what has not yet been healed. Once these unconscious wounds are resolved, the higher self, or soul consciousness, can be used to refocus the mind – and suffering becomes optional. Soul consciousness is to the mind what the master is to the dog. It acts as an outside witness, teaching the mind to wait in stillness for just the right action. We can hear this voice if we listen, guiding us on which thoughts to think and which to let pass by. It’s always there, but until we heed its wisdom, we will continue to be lured by the luscious rabbits of our unconscious mind – and will invariably find ourselves trapped within their dark holes. Christina Allen’s work as an intuitive, healer, teacher, and founder and director of the Austin Shamanic Center combines a strong science background (BA Physics, MS Neuroscience) with decades of applied ancient spiritual wisdom (Master Yogi, Reiki Master, and profound Shamanic Healing based on Q’ero Indian traditions of Peru). THE COURAGE TO The Unity Experience

by Rick Busby, LUT Change is inevitable. In truth, it’s the only constant in the universe. Transformation, on the other hand, is optional – and not guaranteed. If you simply experience change for change’s sake, you may too easily find yourself reduced to playing the part of a victim, feeling powerless in the face of change. For change to be transformative, you must assume responsibility for your experiences, engage changes, and commit to do the work necessary to be transformed. Achieving that end requires the courage to imagine new possibilities for your experiences.

In 2017, the spiritual community at Unity Church of The Hills experienced an inspiring year of change and transformation. We moved through the experience together, honoring our past, acknowledging our fears and uncertainties, cocreating and affirming our new vision together – and, finally, committing ourselves to the transformative possibilities.

By year’s end, the UCOH community had been transformed, in large part, because of a willingness to practice the creative and spiritual principles that Unity teaches. In late June, we said good-bye to our beloved spiritual leader, and retiring senior minister, Rev. Steve Bolen. After taking over the reins in 2007, Rev. Steve led the UCOH community through ten years of stable, vital, growth and spiritual expansion. Then in July, less than one month after his retirement, we welcomed Revs. Brian and Kristen Grandon into the UCOH family as our new Spiritual Leaders. Through Brian and Kristen’s loving, spirit-filled leadership, the UCOH community ended 2017 fully transformed, and ready for a new and exciting vision in 2018.

Unity’s experience is only a microcosm of the broader changes that 2017 brought to the world at large.

Some of those changes are still producing resistance and turbulence, which only impede individual and collective transformation. It’s helpful to remember that transformation first occurs within your own consciousness, before it becomes manifest and apparent in your external reality. When you’re in the midst of changes in your personal experience, you must have the courage to go within, to connect with the deepest truth you can reach, and then allow the truth you know to inform your every thought, word, and action. Given that you’re in the midst of changes virtually every single day of your life, cultivating the life skills necessary to go within – and come from within – are vital to living an empowered, transformative life. To this end, UCOH will be hosting Rev. Robert Brumet March 1-3 for a three-day meditation retreat. Rev. Brumet facilitates a transformative experience designed to encourage a deeper, more connected relationship with your own indwelling divinity and help you learn how to live from that awareness. Doing so puts you in the best position for your life to be transformed by change, rather than wrecked by it. Rick Busby is a Licensed Unity Teacher. Unity Church of the Hills is in its twenty-second year of celebrating life, serving truth, and empowering people to transform their lives. UCOH offers three Sunday services in northwest Austin each week, with a year-round slate of special events, classes, workshops, small group ministries, and retreats for spiritually curious individuals and families looking for a positive path to spiritual living. UCOH encourages others to remain open to truth from all traditions, while maintaining our commitment to Unity teachings grounded in the principles of practical Christianity. R EVOLUTIONIZING R ELATIONSHIPS Building Consciousness with Tao Yoga and Thai Yoga Partner Massage by Loren Johnson, L.Ac. How can relationships thrive, in a time where they rarely survive? You might be hard pressed to find a good answer to that question through spiritual traditions given that many, even yogic ones, often hold negative judgments of one important part of relationships – sexual energy, and the physical body in general. There are, however, disciplines that develop spiritual cultivation at a high level, along with simultaneous seamless integration of partnership pursuits – even sexual ones. Grandmaster Mantak Chia’s lineage of Tao Yoga offers accessible individual and partner practices in abundance, along with very grounded neutral spiritual practices that don’t conflict with religious traditions. Even long-time yoga teachers and practitioners familiar with energy movement have found a few months of basic Tao techniques gave them significant progress on long-standing partner and personal empowerment goals, and Oriental Medicine practitioners have found Tao medical technology adds depth to their work. Tao Yoga. Classes begin with a warm-up of pranayama, basic Chi Kung, and fundamental sexual kung fu breathing (the term kung fu used in the broader sense of developing skill through work, not the colloquial martial arts definition). These are followed by Chi Kung or Yoga exercises and inner alchemy practice. Practice will rotate between Mantak Chia’s Inner Smile, Six Healing Sounds, Microcosmic Orbit, and Fusion of Five Elements practice, and may also integrate partner meditations. Thai Yoga Partner Massage: Caretakers sometimes forget to care for themselves, so a quick caretaker self-care Chi Kung warm up opens the class, counting as hours towards Healing Tao instructorship. (Thai Yoga hours also count towards massage CE’s.) A demonstration illustrates sequences you’ll be trading with the partner who attends class with you, supported by follow-up online media. When consciousness flourishes in relationships, it supports the growth of both the partnership and each individual’s personal development – and the consciousness of the entire world as well. Loren Johnson is a Senior Universal Healing Tao instructor in the Tao Yoga lineage of Grandmaster Mantak Chia, studied Thai Yoga Partner Massage at Thailand’s famous Wat Pho school, and is a licensed acupuncturist (TX AC 011799), holding a Master’s in Oriental Medicine. He offers private sessions and in-person and online classes with Universal Tao Healing instructor hours and massage CE hours, and a discreet acupuncture program for men’s sexual health. TIRELESS OR WIRELESS?

EMFs, sleep, and your children’s health by Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter Do you or your family suffer from lack of sleep? Ever thought it might be your environment? Do you sleep better in one room than another? The human body is a complex machine requiring daily tuning and healing, much of it during sleep. One long-term study on restoring biochemical pathways during sleep indicated a large percentage of Americans don’t heal properly because of overexposure to an environmental toxin most don’t even know they’re exposed to – electromagnetic fields (EMF’s) bombarding their sleeping space.

Awake or asleep, man-made electromagnetic radiation is dangerous.

It’s invisible to the naked eye (you can’t see WiFi signals) and doesn’t cause pain or sensations when your body absorbs it. It’s broadcast from remote locations without being noticed, and you’re exposed to it non-stop, 24/7, from different sources. For the last decade and a half, children’s sleeping patterns have changed dramatically, along with a rise in learning difficulties, behavioral problems, eating disorders, and mood swings. Some studies show electromagnetic fields in a child’s bedroom is directly related to sleep. Low density EMF’s showed better patterns of sleep and better behavior during the day, high density EMF’s showed multiple awakenings during the night, learning difficulties, and behavioral problems. Tips for parents: • Measure electromagnetic radiation in children’s rooms with an EMR home assessment by an expert. • Remove baby monitors – they broadcast the strongest EMF’s of all devices in the study. • Remove cellphones and tablets from the room, or put them on airplane mode during sleep. • Teach (and enforce) responsible cellphone use – a must. • Unplug wi-fi routers at bedtime.

Other countries are already ahead of us.

Some European countries already recommend parents with young children hardwire homes instead of using wifi, others ban wifi from public places, replacing it with hardwired internet. Obviously, these steps benefit parents, too – and anyone. The most important first step? Have an expert assess radiation in your home, then listen to their advice about clearing it of dangerous EMF’s. Ignorance isn’t bliss – it’s just ignorance. Dr. Carlos Loredo Ritter of EMF Knights has a background in pediatrics, neurology, physics, and sleep medicine, and will speak and answer questions at the Holistic Life Workshop and Fair, Feb. 17, 11am-4pm, 1108 S. 8th. EMF Knights offers high-quality protective cell phone covers and free consultations on expert EMF testing and remediation. (512) 436-6768, www.EMFKnights.net

THE NEAR DEATH EXPERIENCE True love and fireflies

by Pat Johnson We’re all going to die, and there’s nothing we can do about it. So why the fascination with the near death experience (NDE)? On September 10, 2010, kayaking on the Blanco River, I was sucked into a large pipe under a bridge. Trying to fight my way out, I lost consciousness and had an NDE. Since then, I’ve spent time with over two hundred people that have had NDE’s, and a lot of people that haven’t but have curiosity or fascination with NDE’s and the afterlife. Non-experiencers seem to be fixed on what it’s like to die, whether there’s a heaven or a God – and the proof. The focus of experiencers has much more to do with living than dying.

No two NDE’s are the same.

There’s a core group of universal messages and lessons experiencers receive. As an experiencer, it’s frustrating to see how off-track we get with the NDE’s meaning. I’ve never met an experiencer who was told to come back and talk to dead people, and although I’m in agreement with the scientific research, never had an experiencer tell me they need scientific proof of their NDE to know it was real. The woo-woo attached to NDE’s can be a distraction from their true, universal messages, around since the beginning of time. Experiencers aren’t bringing back new information, they’ve simply been given a deeper understanding of what the messages mean – connection to each other and God, forgiveness, acceptance, the value of each and every soul, humility, faith, desire to seek the truth, the need to share and serve, and – most importantly – unconditional love.

Fireflies.

Three of the last four years, I’ve attended retreats for experiencers at an old convent in St. Louis. Twenty-two other experiencers, four days, very little contact with the outside world. It’s amazing how little time experiencers at this retreat spend recounting their NDE’s. Attendees refer to themselves as fireflies, small beams of light spreading messages of love and connectedness. There’s nothing special about them – they’re still human, dealing with the spiritual conflicts everyone else does. The difference? Experiencers are action-oriented, understanding time and love has to be shared and lived with others, without expecting anything in return. That’s true love. Dear Ashtara:

Messages from Your Angels and Master Teachers Dear Ashtara, I feel as though my life will be in hyper-drive over the next twenty-four months, propelling me into a total new beingness. What are the top five things, or areas of focus, to help me on this Soul path destiny, harmoniously balancing my spiritual and physical being? Renee Rae, Round Rock, TX Dear Renee, What is going to happen in your life is the same, the status quo, until you decide on a new career. Real estate is on the top of the list. With that you can do mortgages. You will be the happiest you have ever been if you decide to take the real estate test, pass it and start work immediately. You can also plan a cruise for your next venture, and it will probably be a success. May luck be with you, and may the Force be with you. Your highest teachers are Zadkiel, Ashtar, Lord Maitreya, and Zeus.

Dear Ashtara, My marriage has been going through a rough period for a while now. I want to make it work, not only for myself, but also for my young child, but I don’t know how. Is it worth the effort, or should I make plans to move on? Blessings and gratitude, WM, 43, Austin, TX Dear WM, It looks like you are going to go through a trial and error. Your mate is not satisfied with your relationship – therefore, it is not his cup of tea. If there’s anything you can do to shift the relationship, please think about it. You have a wonderful, beautiful, and magnificent relationship, which will wither if you do not go into very positive action. The only thing you have to do is press forward, be positive, and nurture the angel that you have been with. Your angel is Gabriel and your High Teacher is Sandalfon.

26

Dear Ashtara, Can you tell me if I will ever see my son again? He hasn’t spoken to me for over ten years. He’s my firstborn and I love him very much. It hurts that he’s disowned me, for reasons that are unknown to me. It is like having a hole in my heart. I am getting older, and I can’t help but wonder if I will see him again before my transition. C, 62, Austin, TX Dear C., It looks like your son will eventually get in touch with you because of the amount of energy you have spent trying to be with him. When one spends a lot of energy, it goes into a Universal Flow, therefore, the flow continues until the work is finished. So, thank you for finding a quiet time for you to tune in to a greater light for you and him. When this takes place, I think he will begin to think about you. By the way, he’s not in this country. It looks to me like he is in Brazil. Send loving thoughts to him, and I’m pretty sure one day he will call you. Your highest teacher is Sandalfon and your angel is Uriel.

Private Sessions can be scheduled (in person or by phone). Questions answered and more. Ashtara Sasha White is a gifted psychic, profound healer and channel from the Ascended Masters/Archangels.
