Cowboy Folk Song Clifton ranks as the Norwegian Capital of Texas. Meridian sits on The Top of the Hill Country. But along with the differences, there’s one common thread weaving through Bosque County and the entire Bosque River Valley – the Chisholm Trail.

Instrumental in making the American Cowboy an enduring folk hero, the Chisholm Trail began simply as wagon tracks made by Scotch-Cherokee Jesse Chisholm in 1864, when he began hauling trade goods to Indian camps about 220 miles south from Kansas to his southern trading post near the Red River in Texas.

From those humble beginnings, the legendary Chisholm Trail became the major route out of Texas for livestock.

Although it was used only from 18671884, the longhorn cattle driven north along it provided a steady source of income that helped the impoverished state of Texas recover from the Civil War. For a period of about 12 years, anywhere from five-nine million head of longhorn cattle and a million mustangs traveled from South Texas northward to Kansas, creating the cowboy tales of the Chisholm Trail.

Consequently, cowboys began to gather and brand wild cattle and drive them north. Larry McMurty’s classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel Lonesome Dove immortalized the ideas, dreams and relentless drive of the Texas cowboy.

There were many branches of the beef trail, but one main trail followed present day Interstate 35.

At Waco, the Brazos River had to be crossed. Due to the volatile nature of the Brazos, the city of Waco built a suspension bridge over the river to help the cattle and wagons and drovers to cross more easily.

Some trail bosses opted not to pay the three cents per head charge for the use of the bridge, so the cattle splintered off from the main herd at Waco and crossed the Bosque at old Valley Mills. Presenting a great opportunity for the cattle to spread over the prairie between the Bosque and the Brazos and fatten up before heading north, it also served as a merging point for herds coming from the west.

Enterprising Bosque County locals waited for these “cowpunchers” with their locally grown fruits and vegetables, and the cowboys eagerly bought their wares.

The herds left old Valley Mills, making only about eight miles a day, stopping for the cattle to rest and feed on the prairie. So it was some time before they reached the next town, Kimball, another river crossing.

After the Plains tribes were subdued and the buffalo decimated, ranches sprang up all over the Plains stocked with Texas longhorns and manned by Texas cowboys.

Raising cattle on open range and free grass attracted investments from the East and abroad in partnerships. Texas tried to outlaw alien land ownership but failed.

As a result, barbed wire closed the Chisholm Trail by 1885.

But in reality, the legendary trail never faded away. In 2014, the North Texas Tollway Authority constructed a 26-milelong toll road named after the trail, the Chisholm Trail Parkway, connecting downtown Fort Worth to Cleburne.

So in a practical and literal way for most of us in Bosque County and beyond, the legacy of the Chisholm Trail lives on today.

“Let me tell you, making Lonesome Dove was just pure magic. You could get out on that landscape, squint your eyes just a little, and believe you were back in the Old West.”

Bill Wittliff Much like the Old West, black-and-white photography has largely become a thing of the past. But for many of us, there’s something about both that almost instantly strikes a chord in our souls.

Both the ruggedness of the Old West and the beauty of black-andwhite photography came to life once again when The Lonesome Dove Exhibition featuring The Bill Wittliff Collection opened with a star-studded gala Jan. 20 at the Bosque Museum in Clifton.

Displaying a photographic exhibit that captures the sweeping visual imagery of the original miniseries taken during the filming by screenwriter and photographer Bill Wittliff, the 60-photograph collection will call Bosque Museum home through March 3.

“The opportunity to have Lonesome Dove fits in with the museum’s permanent exhibits, including the Chisholm Trail, which we have been focusing on this past year,” Bosque Museum Executive Director Barbara Aars said. “Lonesome Dove certainly ties into that. So for us, it’s a wonderful opportunity.”

Museum board member Paul Leonard took notice of the exhibit initially when the Lonesome Dove Reunion was held March 31, 2016 in the Fort Worth Stockyards.

“It’s considered a national treasure, a real work of art,” Leonard said.

“It depicts history so well. It’s really something.”

After cowboy singer Don Edwards opened the gala program Jan. 20 with a song inspired by Lonesome Dove, Wittliff was on hand to tell stories about the making of the miniseries before historian J.P. Bryan

elaborated on the significant Texas historical connections depicted in Larry McMurtry’s epic novel.

“I want to salute all the people who support and work with this museum,” Wittliff said. “I just think this is dandy. And that this town supports this is amazing. I’m glad my pictures are here, I’m glad you are here. I thank you hugely.

“I’m here to talk about the miniseries. But I don’t want people for one minute to forget where this all comes from, and where it comes from is Larry McMurty’s novel, Lonesome Dove. It is our Gone With The Wind, it’s where we come from, and it’s where we like to believe we are...that we really are those guys.”

Interestingly, Lonesome Dove began as McMurtry’s rejected film script before he worked the story into a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, and ultimately saw it produced as a six-and-a-half-hour Emmy Award-winning television miniseries in 1989.

Long before Lonesome Dove became the winner of the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, McMurtry and film director Peter Bogdanovich collaborated on an original western script in 1972 that the studio welcomed, but the actors they had in mind – John Wayne as Captain Woodrow F. Call, Jimmy Stewart as Captain Augustus “Gus” McCrae, and Henry Fonda as retired Ranger Jake Spoon – disliked it. The project collapsed when John Ford advised Wayne to reject the script.

According to McMurtry, the script “languished in development hell for 12 years”before he bought the rights back for $35,000 to work on

the story as a novel.

The story focuses on the relationship of several retired Texas Rangers and their adventures driving a cattle herd from Texas to Montana. Set in the closing years of the Old West, the novel explores themes of old age, death, unrequited love and loyal friendship.

In the late 1870s, Captain Woodrow F. Call and Captain Augustus “Gus” McCrae, two famous retired Texas Rangers, run the Hat Creek Cattle Company and Livery Emporium in the small Texas border town of Lonesome Dove.

Working with them are Joshua Deets, an excellent black tracker and scout from their Ranger days; Pea Eye Parker, another former Ranger who is reliable but unintelligent; Bolivar, a retired Mexican bandit who works as their cook; and Newt Dobbs, a 17-year-old boy whose mother was a prostitute named Maggie and whose father is widely thought by the outfit to be Call, though never acknowledged.

The band of lawman turned ranchers pass time in and around the town’s one saloon, the Dry Bean, where the prostitute Lorena conducts her business.

10 Jake Spoon, another former Ranger, arrives in Lonesome Dove with stories of his travels across the United States. But he’s on the run, having accidentally shot a dentist in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Spoon persuades the restless Call to drive a herd of 3,000 cattle northward 1,200 miles to the grassy valley of Montana’s Yellowstone River, nearly to the Canadian border. The long drive and its adventures consume most of Lonesome Dove.

New York Times critic Nicholas Lemann praised the novel as “thrilling and almost perfectly realized,” calling it “the great cowboy novel.” But McMurtry himself eventually expressed dissatisfaction with the popularity of the novel, particularly after the miniseries adaptation.

“It’s hard to go wrong if one writes at length about the Old West, still the phantom leg of the American psyche,” McMurtry wrote in the 2000 edition preface.

“I thought I had written about a harsh time and some pretty harsh people, but, to the public at large, I had produced something nearer to an idealization; instead of a poor man’s Inferno, filled with violence, faithlessness and betrayal, I had actually delivered a kind of Gone With The Wind of the West, a turnabout I’ll be mulling over for a long, long time.”

Based closely on the novel, Wittliff adapted the story to be produced as a six-and-a-half-hour television miniseries in 1989, directed by Australian Simon Wincer.

“Initially, I didn’t think he had the right vision for this in terms of movie making,” said Wittliff of Wincer. “We went out to dinner and I ordered raw oysters. I was just about to say, ‘Simon, I just can’t go with you,’ but I looked down and there was a little grey pearl in my oyster. And I thought, you know Billy, you’re getting a signal here.

So, I said, ‘Simon, you’re the guy.’ And indeed, he was.”

ART Lonesome Dove became an American epic Western adventure television miniseries, a four-part adaptation starring Tommy Lee Jones as Call and Robert Duvall as Gus, originally broadcast by CBS from February 5-8, 1989 as an estimated 26 million homes tuned in, reviving both the television western and the miniseries.

At the 1989 Emmy Awards, the miniseries received 18 nominations and seven wins, including one for director Simon Wincer. Lonesome Dove also won two Golden Globes, for Best Miniseries and Robert Duvall for Best Actor in a Miniseries. Wittliff won a Writers Guild of America Award in 1990 for Lonesome Dove, Episode 1: “Leaving,” and a Bronze Wrangler award from the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Wittliff, born in Taft, Texas, donated his memorabilia from the Lonesome Dove miniseries to the Alkek Library at Texas State University in San Marcos and persuaded others connected with the TV production to do the same. As a result a small room in the library almost overflows with tributes to the miniseries.

While the memorabilia remains permanently housed in San Marcos, The Wittliff Collections includes the Lonesome Dove photographs that have become a traveling exhibit through Humanities Texas.

In fact, Wittliff founded the Southwest Writers Collection at Texas State University in 1986, which featured work by authors and songwriters from Texas and the American Southwest. In 1996, he founded the Wittliff Collection of Southwestern and Mexican Photography at the university.

The university’s holdings, now renamed The Wittliff Collections, have grown to become one of the most extensive archives of Southwestern materials in the United States, a centerpiece being the papers of writer Cormac McCarthy. The archive also features an exhibition containing items

Despite having more than 40 screenplays – The Black Stallion (1979), Honeysuckle Rose (1980), Raggedy Man (1981), Barbarosa (1982), Legends of the Fall (1994) and The Perfect Storm (2000), just to name a few – to his credit, Wittliff still prefers to be seen as an arts photographer.

Wittliff ’s images have been exhibited in the United States and abroad, and published in four monographs – Vaquero: Genesis of the Texas Cowboy (2004), La Vida Brinca: Tragaluz Photographs (2006), A Book of Photographs from Lonesome Dove (2007) – as well as in A Book on the Making of Lonesome Dove (2012), all with UT Press. His photographic work has also appeared in numerous exhibitions, catalogs, books, and periodicals.

Of course, fans of Lonesome Dove have long discussed the historical connections to the story and its characters, and historian J.P. Bryan offered his research and observations on the topic at the gala opening at the Bosque Museum.

According to McMurtry, Gus and Call were not modeled after historical characters. But as Bryan pointed out, the similarities with real-life cattle drivers Oliver Loving and Charles Goodnight remain undeniable. For example, upon Loving’s death, Goodnight brought him home to be buried in Texas, as Call does for Augustus.

Like Wittliff ’s stunning black-and-white photographs from the shooting of the miniseries, McMurtry beautifully gave us the feel of the plains at the moment, just after the national centennial, when power tipped finally and quickly from Indians to whites. And he gave us all a true feeling for cowboying.

“One day we were shooting a scene, and I was standing there watching, and all of a sudden I heard cattle coming, the jingle of spurs and cowboys yelling from way off and I was transfixed. Then a couple of cowboys came over the ridge, then a couple of cows, then the chuckwagon. It was so real, it was surreal.”

Lonesome Dove holds us with such a grip because we feel the dream in Call and Gus, and so we also feel the awful sadness as we watch it all slipping away. Whatever reality the dream held, the end was bound to come.

In the Old West found on the cattle drives of the Chisholm Trail, the end came quickly. Longhorns were first driven to Kansas from Texas in 1864. By the 1870s, ranching was shifting to the northern plains, and the Indians were defeated. In another decade, barbed wire had mostly closed the open range and ranching had become a corporate enterprise as the freedom of the Old West was literally fenced in.

To all of us who love the story, the characters of Lonesome Dove represent familiar, identifiable folks – a bit rough, a bit gruff – we can’t help but like, who suddenly do the unexpected and ultimately epitomize what we all want to be. We all know their pain, and we all want to realize their heroism in ourselves.

Tin Building Theatre’s “The Odd Couple” Cast Embrace Family Onstage & Off For more than 50 years, Neil Simon’s popular play, “The Odd Couple,” has been delighting audiences from Broadway to Bosque County. Crowds never seem to tire of the hilarious antics of mismatched roommates Oscar Madison and Felix Unger.

With five performances for three weekends running through Feb. 3, the Bosque Arts Center’s Tin Building Theatre treated local fans with the opportunity to see this timeless classic with a modern twist.

The production of “The Odd Couple – The Female Version” marked the start of the Tin Building Theatre’s 36th season. The all-volunteer theatrical group was organized in 1982 under the umbrella of the newly-formed Bosque Arts Center, then known as “The Conservatory.” The group took up residence in the old metal building that had previously served as a manufacturing plant for Gearench, thus the group’s name.

The first show by TBT was presented in August 1982 at Bettis Auditorium on the Clifton Elementary School campus. Until the group was able to construct its own stage in their third season, they presented plays at various locations throughout the county, and have staged some 150 productions over the past 35 seasons.

The group’s annual season today typically includes two main stage shows complete with dinner performances. Through the years, the TBT’s plays have run the gamut from classic comedies such as “Barefoot In the Park” and “Arsenic and Old Lace,” to period dramas

like “Driving Miss Daisy,” “The Miracle Worker” and “The Trip to Bountiful.”

TBT musicals have ranged from “Godspell” and “Grease” to the storied lives of music legends Patsy Cline and Hank Williams. The group has also presented countless summer melodramas and children’s productions.

“The Odd Couple” made its Broadway debut in 1965 and originally starred Walter Matthau and Art Carney, respectively, as Oscar Madison and Felix Unger. The popular 1968 film version would star Matthau and Jack Lemmon. A television series followed in the 1970s, wherein Jack Klugman portrayed slob Oscar to Tony Randall’s eccentric Felix.

Simon adapted his popular script to showcase women in 1985, and the play opened on Broadway with “West Side Story” Oscar-winner Rita Moreno as Olive Madison and TV’s “All in the Family” alumni Sally Struthers as Florence Unger.

Today, both “Odd Couple” incarnations remain popular among community theaters across the nation.

The Tin Building Theatre presented its first Neil Simon comedy, “Plaza Suite,” during the group’s second season in 1983. TBT first performed the original version of “The Odd Couple” 30 years ago, and then the female version 20 years ago. THEATRE “Rumors,” “God’s Favorite,” “Barefoot in the Park” and “The Sunshine Boys.” This comedy’s run will mark the TBT’s ninth time to present a Simon play.

Cast and crew members for the production come from diverse backgrounds, including a high school teacher, a teenage student, a video composer, and a pastor. The cast also includes three actresses who have each been involved at TBT almost 30 years or longer.

Lorana Rush, who portrays Olive Madison in the show, has been involved with TBT longer than any cast member. Rush was a multi-talented teenager at Clifton High School who parlayed her love for One-Act plays into regular performances at TBT in the mid1980s. Her many stage credits there included the annual summer melodramas, which in those days were held outdoors.

“I have so many wonderful memories of growing up with TBT,” Rush said.

After college, Rush would return to TBT, where she not only starred in productions such as “No Sex Please, We’re British!” but directed for TBT as well. Rush has portrayed both Shelby and M’Lynn in two separate TBT productions of “Steel Magnolias.”

While her work took her away from Clifton and TBT for 12 years, Rush returned eight years ago.

“It was like coming home,” Rush recalled. “It (TBT) brings a feeling of comfort and comradery. I have made so many lifelong friends there, and those are what I cherish above all else. They are my family.”

Returning to TBT also gave Rush the opportunity to work alongside her then-teenage son, Jordan Buchalski, who was also very involved with TBT. The two appeared together onstage and Buchalski, now 21, works as an operations specialist with the US Coast Guard.

“TBT has delighted audiences for so many years now,” Rush said.

“What an amazing legacy to be a part of.”

Linda Lowrance, who tackles the role of the persnickety Florence Unger in the new show, has also spent the better part of 30 years at TBT. She had her only true lead prior to “Odd Couple” in Noel Coward’s comedy “Blithe Spirit” in 1990, which ironically was directed by Rush, by then already a TBT veteran.

Lowrance parlayed that debut into a series of small, memorable performances over the past three decades in plays such as “Driving Miss Daisy,” “The Homecoming,” “The Cemetery Club,” “The Hallelujah Girls,” “Christmas Belles” and “Doublewide, Texas,” to name a few.

Lowrance directed Simon’s play, “The Sunshine Boys,” and assistant directed several more.

Lowrance has also been actively involved behind-the-scenes at TBT and serves on the TBT Board of Directors, presently as president.

“I’m having a lot of fun,” Lowrance said. “It’s challenging. It’s the largest role I’ve ever played.” As president of TBT, Lowrance said she takes pride in the comments she hears from audiences and in the community. “Folks say they are amazed by our facility and by the quality of our productions.”

Like both Rush and Lowrance, Jo Rinewalt has also spent some three decades performing multiple roles at TBT. In the current show, she plays one of Olive and Florence’s devoted friends. The show is set in the 1980s and the women gather for a games of Trivial Pursuit rather than poker.

Rinewalt had no idea she’s still enjoy performing when she first played a small role in “Picnic” in 1988. Her credits through the years include “Beauty and the Beast,” “Drinking Habits,” “Christmas Belles,” and “Greater Tuna.” She’s finished raising her family and has been a widow for several years.

“I keep coming back because I love this Theatre and the people I’ve met there,” Rinewalt explained. “Doing the shows is refreshing and

Kris Chandler, along with Rich Douglas, portrays Manolo and Jesus, the Latin love interests for Olive and Florence.

Chandler became involved in TBT two years ago in the play “Drinking Habits,” and last season delighted audiences in “Doublewide, Texas.” Chandler, who says he caught the “theater bug” early and performed four years in high school One-Act plays, said the

TBT has “rekindled that passion for theater and the family you form around doing productions together.”

Chandler works as a math teacher at Clifton High School, and now also serves as director of the school’s One Act Play. In that capacity, he has encouraged students to become involved at TBT, and one of them, Clifton senior Raven Ridings, has a featured role in the show.

Rich Douglas is no stranger to TBT, though he makes his stage debut playing Jesus. He enjoyed watching numerous shows at TBT while visiting his parents over the past 15 years. He and his wife, Leah, made Clifton their permanent home almost two years ago when they became owners of the historic Cliftex Theater.

game industry, but acting is something new altogether. He’s enjoyed his experience with at TBT so much he hopes to act again and perhaps even direct or utilize his professional skills in upcoming efforts.

“I think community theatre is integral to any community, regardless of its size,” the Dallas native said. “It’s important to keep this entertainment and this art form alive.”

Also making their TBT stage debuts are mother and daughter Sherry Pierce and Raven Ridings. Sherry was a graduate of Clifton High School, where Raven will graduate this spring. They portray two of Olive and Florence’s friends, who frequently gather to help their friends through the turmoil of failed marriages.

Pierce had only acted once previously, in a high school One-Act play, and loves her experience at TBT and the opportunity to work alongside her youngest child doing something she loves.

“My daughter is my hero,” Pierce said. “I adore working with her.”

Pierce is the mother of four grown children and grandmother to eight.

Raven has more stage experience than her mom. She’s been involved in theater since junior high and this year serves as student director and actress in the upcoming UIL

One-Act Play, “The Great Pandemonium,” which is directed by Chandler. Ridings plans to attend the University of Mississippi following high school graduation in May. Today, Pierce serves as pastor of a local church congregation, The Lighthouse. She’s held the job for almost 10 years. She lists her previous credentials as “housewife, mother, and party animal.”

Pierce said she was led to church leadership because “I always had a heart for God and for people.” She said becoming a minister has given her life purpose.

Rounding out the cast is Deb Phinney, who appears in her third role for TBT in “Odd Couple.” She previously appeared in “Christmas Belles” and “Miracle on 34th Street.”

Phinney has worked at the Bosque Arts Center for four years as Program Director, and enjoys her involvement on the stage.

“I work at the Arts Center every day,” Phinney said. “But having the opportunity to be a participant in the Theatre provides a different perspective and experience. It’s like playing make-believe as a kid. Now, it’s a test as to whether or not my memory is still good enough to remember the lines.”

The play is being directed by Don Boysen, who has appeared on stage in numerous

plays in the past several years, but tackling his first solo directing assignment.

“We are constantly looking for material the community will enjoy,” said Boysen, “and with Neil Simon, you just don’t get much better than that.”

Boysen also credits a talented and cast and crew, including his assistant director Carla Sigler. “We hope the end result is a production audiences will thoroughly enjoy.”

The play will close with dinner performances on Saturday, Feb. 3. Regular performances are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 27, Sunday, Jan. 28 (a matinee) and Friday, Feb. 2.

In “The Odd Couple,” the characters learn that while life isn’t always easy, it’s made richer by caring friends who help them overcome hardships.

This has also proven to be the case offstage as well for members of the cast and crew.

Sometimes the “family” we end up with is as important as the one’s we’re born into. That seems to be the message cast members find most important from times spent together at Tin Building Theatre.

Unique country churches play important role in preserving county’s history, heritage & culture Bosque County is dotted with small and unique country church buildings, each holding special stories of the hard-working families that made up the body of these buildings.

Spiritual practice was a vital part of the health and well-being of these small communities. Earliest services were held in private homes, such as the Ringness Home. The first documented sermon was preached by Circuit Riding Baptist Minister Claybaugh in 1854 at Liberty Hill, which was located

near present day Valley Mills School.

In fact, the churches were usually the first buildings constructed when pioneers settled into a preferred spot. A kind benefactor would donate land; neighbors pooled resources, provided materials and labored together to construct these places of frontier worship.

Early churches served several purposes - children attended school here, and they were the center of other community activities. Cemeteries were often

established near the church.

Lane Chapel, Fairview, Steiner and Spring Creek represent four of these unique country Bosque County churches located off the beaten track and not always prominent in historical discussions.

These churches have been loved and cared for by generations of descendants of those who established them. Their stories need to be kept alive.

Heading west from Meridian on Highway 22, turning onto the scenic FM 1473 and then onto CR 2160 brings you deep into the heart of North Bosque. Turning left at the intersection of PR 2175 will lead you to the Spring Creek Church, school and cemetery.

Comanche roamed the wide expanse of the Central Texas country after the Civil War until around 1870. Settlers looking for cheap land perfect for farming and ranching started moving in after the Civil War. Founded as Spring Creek Missionary Baptist Church of Christ on May 24, 1874, it was the 11th Baptist church in Bosque county.

On September 26, 1883 four acres was deeded for religious and educational purposes. There were nine charter members, among them Lizzie Faulkner, and they joined the Bosque River Association.

By 1883, the membership had increased to 85. Services were conducted in the school until the building was dedicated on May 23, 1909.

As with other churches of that time, summer camp meetings were held along the creek. It was a special time for Biblical teaching, preaching and baptisms. These meetings were a respite for the men from their long days working the farms. They would sit under the trees and hear sermons during the day. In the evening, they would fish and swim, enjoy a huge spread of food and then enjoy a “singing.”

Women did what they always did – cook, clean their camp site, tend to the children, wash clothes in the creek, haul water – you get the picture. However, the women were permitted to join the singings. They and the children sat on one side, and the men sat on the other.

These meetings allowed the women an opportunity to socialize with each other. Women formed associations aimed at helping others. They also held quilting bees at the church. One member designed a beautiful quilt listing all the names of the members.

HISTORY Tragedy struck this lady and she had to move away. Happily, the quilt was returned to the church in 2008, and it hangs on the church wall.

The daughter reported that the quilt gave her mother much comfort through the years, sharing fond memories of Spring Creek Church.

As with most small congregations, church membership has waxed and waned, and the church even closed because of lack of attendance in 1970. But since its reopening in 1986, Spring Creek has remained active and vital, with regular Sunday services and special singings.

The church was incorporated in 2016 under the name Spring Creek Baptist Church of Bosque County.

Heading east from Meridian on Highway 22, turning left on the long and winding FM 56, Steiner Baptist Church is on the left after heading down FM 1713 about a mile.

The sleepy little town of Fowler developed around 1890, along the convergence of Steele Creek and the Brazos River. The Texas Central Railroad came through a few years later, which was a boon for the cotton farmers and ranchers. A cotton gin was built, and cotton and cattle could be loaded on the train.

This area near the Brazos was known locally as Steiner Valley with the huge Steiner Ranch was directly across the river. The ranch was owned by Dr. J.M. Steiner, who also donated the land for the county seat of Meridian. In 1916, the country town’s name was officially changed to Steiner in his honor.

The church was established in 1891, and by 1895, the membership was 46 members. Joe Yates donated land for the first church building in 1906. Sadly, this church burned. Not to be deterred, the people, with much help from Mr. Yates, rebuilt the church in 1908. Mass baptisms were held during the summer in Steele Creek. In 1940, the church merged with Cedron Creek Church.

Due to the construction of Lake Whitney, the town of Steiner was ordered to evacuate. The members of the community did not want their church to be destroyed, so they devised a plan to move the church out of the flood plain. Men made a huge roller sled out of cut logs, harnessed it to a team of mules, loaded the church onto the sled and rolled the church three miles southeast to the present location.

Quite an engineering feat!

The church was awarded a Texas Historical Marker in 2008.

Steiner Church is still active after enduring hardships and serving a community since 1891 and has regular Sunday and Wednesday services.

Lanes Chapel sits on the left at the intersection of CR 2602 and CR 3135.

Joshua McCuistion and family came to the beautiful Hog Creek valley in 1872, in an area later known as the Hollis Prairie Community. Mrs. McCuistion was so taken with the area she declared “this will be the site of the church.”

The John Robertson Lane family moved to this area two years later, followed by the John Cox family. Early religious services were held in a brush arbor and could only be held in good weather. In 1880, Mr. McCuistion, honoring his wife’s declaration, donated two acres of land. Mr. Lane and his sons, who were excellent carpenters, built the church and the pews.

Sadly, the original church burned in 1895, but it was replaced soon after. The second church lasted until 1922, when it was torn down and replaced with the present structure.

The church was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church.

In early days, Methodist circuit riding ministers served the little church. Local young men filled the role of ministers until 1922, when the Central Texas Conference of the Methodist Church provided ministers.

In 1960, the tiny church merged with Clifton Methodist Church.

An annual homecoming is still held in June, and until recently,

HISTORY monthly singings were held on Saturday evenings. Von Kleibrink is a caretaker of the church and cemetery. Being related to many of the original members of the community, Von jokingly says he “inherited” the responsibility, but he does it with love and honor.

Fairview Baptist Church sits at the junction of CR 3530 and CR 3510 on the northeast boundary of the county.

Fairview Baptist was originally organized as Coon Creek Missionary Baptist Church in 1889. By 1897, it had moved to the Fairview school and known as Fairview Missionary Baptist Church. The land on which the church sits was donated by Gip Smith, son of an early Bosque County settler along the Brazos River. The Smith family was the earliest cotton growers in the county.

Services were held in the school for eight years until a church could be built.

There were eight original members.

Land was donated by Fritz Thiele for a cemetery near the church.

As with many small rural churches, throughout the years, members came and went. War years took young men away, farms failed and families moved

23 away. The Depression took its toll, but some families stood the test of time.

Edgar Sleet Dorman, known as Duggan, was born not far from the church and still lives in the same area today. A stint in the U.S. Army Air Corps and time at Texas A&M were the only time he was away from Fairview. His family was some of the earliest settlers in the area.

Duggan, in his 90s, recalls the families that attended Fairview. He remembers the dinner on the grounds, singings and socials, but he especially remembers the spirit of his neighbors.

They pulled together in tough times, and expressed true Christian spirit in helping each other through those tough times.

As different as these small churches might be regarding their religious backgrounds or the people that made up their congregations, they all have in common that they were the foundation of many settlements in the developing county.

That bedrock of believers held the communities together through fellowship, faith and worship; some surviving to this day.

Valentine Comedy Night at Clifton’s Bosque Arts Center Give your sweetheart an extra special gift this year…the gift of laughter and, of course, dinner at the Bosque Arts Center’s Valentine Comedy Night.

This year, the clean comedy of Straycat Shows from San Antonio will feature Ryan Shields, Kimberly Kerley and previous favorites Griff Zolninger and Chandra Murthy in this evening of Valentine laughs.

This special event includes dinner and comedy for reserved seat holders and some additional advantages for VIP seating.

Audience favorites Griff Zolninger and Chandra Murthy return to the lineup this year with new routines. Audiences may remember Zolninger for his comedic account of his colonoscopy experience, while Murthy entertained the audience with his “tech support” service call.

Murthy, a 73-year old India native and mechanical engineer for 35 years is serious about his comedy. He views his venture into comedy as his answer to a post-retirement hobby.

Newcomers to the lineup this year include Ryan Shields, host for the evening, and Kimberly Kerley.

Shields returns to the Bosque area where he grew up and states he knows how to pronounce “Bosque County” correctly. A semi-finalist in Funniest in Texas 2017, he’s a cartoon voice actor and a club favorite. He might “look like”

a redneck to some, but you’ll never hear this punch line in his smart, light-hearted and honest approach to comedy.

Having spent much of her teens homeless, Kim Kerley has seen things in life that many never see. She’s chosen to find the funny in those situations. A keen observer of life’s crazy conditions, her comedy reflects those experiences.

Kim has been performing stand-up comedy for over 13 years. She is an actor with Dramatic Diva Productions, putting on community plays in the San Antonio area. Her resume includes a stint with Armed Forces Entertainment, an actress with the comedy group Laff Stock, and also an appearance on the TV show The View.

The Valentine’s Comedy Night is scheduled for Saturday, February 10, at the Bosque Arts Center. Dinner will be served at 6 p.m. with the comedy show to follow around 7 p.m. Dinner includes a menu of pork loin, scalloped potatoes, green beans, salad and rolls with butter with a surprise dessert.

Two levels of seating are available: VIP for $75 includes dinner, comedy show, front table seating, complimentary drinks and a special Valentines Day gift.

Reserved seating includes dinner and the comedy show for $35.

This event allows guests to bring their own beverage of choice. Water, iced tea and coffee will be served with the meal.

Sitting in her dad’s studio, watching him work, was a feast for the senses...

Sitting in her dad’s studio, watching him work, was a feast for the senses - the smell of linseed oil, the physical action of mixing of the paints, creating a palette of colors, the rustle of sketching paper and all the while seeing him transform a blank canvas to an exquisite work of art. This fecund environment fed her own creative mind, inspiring her to follow in her dad’s footsteps, but with a style of her own.

Having the famous artist of the American West, James Boren as a father had its perks. Before becoming a nationally-acclaimed and award-winning artist herself, Nancy Boren hung around his studio, drawing and crafting. He taught her a lot just by listening to him talk about art, about the basics like value, color temperature, design and drawing, inspiring her to study art. And setting the bar high.

Boren’s creativity first found outlet in drawing, making quilts, origami, knitting and crochet before taking to painting in water color. At Christian University in Abilene, Boren studied Fine Arts giving her a solid academic and intellectual base to her innate creativity, receiving a Bachelor’s in 1977. And straight away she started painting as her profession.

Since then she has become a print maker and an award-winning oil painter, most recently winning the Artists’ Choice and the Bronze Medal at the 2016 Oil Painters of America show, Second Place Plein Air Salon 2017, and Second Place with the National

Oil and Acrylic Painters’ Society Fall Online International show.

Nancy was featured in the September/October 2017 issue of Art of the West. Her painting Aloft in the Western Sky is part of the permanent collection of the Booth Museum of Western Art in Cartersville, GA. “My job is to be the best Nancy Boren I can be,” nationally acclaimed Boren said. “And it needs to be 100 percent me.”

Even though both Borens like to paint the Western life in a representational way, her dad tended to stick to larger scenes with horses and livestock set in breathtaking vistas with work-weary ranch homesteads. Boren established her own identity by concentrating on painting figures - cow girls, cow boys and the like, with a broader stroke and more impressionistic style. The dress, the cowboy attributes like lassos, saddles, blankets, chaps and hats were an added bonus Boren liked to play with. Showing the different focus of both artists, a joint exhibit in 2012 at the Bosque Arts Center was aptly titled Faces and Places.

Being a very eclectic person – her own words – Boren never paints the same subject over and over again or uses the same color scheme, even though she does have a couple of favorites she likes to come back to. She likes to change it up. Besides depicting the Western lifestyle, she loves painting coastal life and landscapes, especially the Maine coast. And as handwriting changes over the

years, so have her paintings evolved. Subjects might have changed, color schemes might have come and gone, but silhouette, color and contrast are always important in her work, as are strong values.

Balancing values – the lightness and darkness of a color – is most crucial to Boren and undeniably the hardest thing to learn. But once mastered, that is what gives a painting strength and power. Boren tries to stick to three or four values to create the tension and interest she seeks.

And over the years, experience and further studies gave Boren extensive knowledge of her métier.

Like her father, she enjoys talking about art, technique, the basics with her students. At a figure painting workshop at the Bosque Arts Center in the fall of 2017, she used lots of references and showed examples of other painters, telling the back story on how some of the works were created – often with patience, perseverance and an unwavering commitment to put their vision on the canvas. And this is what she stressed to her students, that figure painting is not easy, and if the first strokes or set up are not up to their vision, she encouraged them to make a decision, wipe the canvas clean and start over.

“Starting over is just part of it,” Boren said to her students. “It is quality control.

Do not start down grading. Stick to your

vision.”

At the BAC workshop, as the students honing their skills in figure painting looking at negative space, body proportions and strong values, Boren explained how one of her own award winning plein air paintings Wildflower Field came to be.

She and a friend were driving from Fredricksburg one day when Boren saw the field of wild flowers.

“I got lucky,” Boren said. “The field in the painting is exactly what it looked like.”

But when the canvas was done, it didn’t seem quite finished; something needed to pull the viewer’s attention beyond the lush field of Indian blanket, thistle, bluestem prickly poppy and what looks like Engelman daisies. So, what to add? A rabbit, a bird, a bi-plane? It became the hot air balloon, – not in kaleidoscope colors, but white – just right.

Boren herself enjoys attending workshops of fellow artists, always looking for inspiration, speaking the language of paint together, sharing ideas back and forth, learning along the way. They supply energy.

A general philosophy in Boren’s life, is “When you have an idea you are passionate about, do whatever it takes to achieve it,” translates into her profession. She is also convinced that if you commit yourself, the universe will help you.

When she has an idea on what to paint,

30 she goes to great lengths to make it happen – like driving out into the boonies and putting models on top of windmills. Or borrowing this person’s dog, that person’s wife and that antique motorcycle to put them together with a mountain range she’s been eager to paint for a while.

That last scenario ended up as the Fast Track to Mustang Ridge painting - the 1957 Cushman motorcycle was on loan from the Clifton Classic Chassis, the dog Willie was from fellow Bosque County artist Betty Graham, and the model Amy was a Clifton merchant’s wife.

She loves painting figures; puts them large on the canvas, and more often than not, they exude happiness, or contentment, accentuated by often vibrant colors chosen for that particular painting, an overall sense of ease. A literal lightness – whether by lanterns, a fire casting a warm glow on the subjects or the capture of movement through broad strokes – is also something you will often find in Boren’s paintings, as well as scenes set in twilight is one of her favorite themes.

“Twilight is a magical time since for 30 minutes or so the sky is a velvety turquoise or blue violet,” Boren said. “It is dark enough for all the man-made lights to look bright but light enough to see color in the sky instead of blackness.”

A good example of this love of twilight can be seen in Paper Lights, Magic Nights.

The painting took three evenings to complete – one for the initial set up, until the mosquitoes got too pesky, the second evening to finish the lights and then a two and a half week delay because of rain and conflicting schedules.

Sunlight on white is another thread through her work; a thread she and a friend discovered unexpectedly while going through several decades of paintings. Boren explains how they had this epiphany in “The Spirit Forges Ahead While the Brain Has to Figure It Out,” on the Oil Painters of America blog.

“A common abstract thread that made sense of my varied subjects: it wasn’t so much the crisp white sail boats moving over dark blue water, big puffy clouds in turquoise skies, or white houses surrounded by greenery, but rather it was large white objects in a colorful setting that I was painting over and over again,” Boren said.

“Every piece I do does not feature white on a color field. But now when it happens, I smile to myself and recognize it as another chapter in my love affair with this combination.”

ART finite imagination, her penchant for exotic and colorful things to stage her models in costume, with props – sometimes making them herself – backdrops and lighting.

At the BAC workshop, she added a feather and flower to her female model’s hair, tied a red frou-frou anklet on her left foot, transforming a girl in a short red gauze tutu into a carnavalesque figure ready to perform in the circus high top or take to the stage as a chorus girl in Vegas.

The next day, the backdrop was an array of colorful, primarily nautical flags, with a whimsical flag thrown in for good measure.

The model, male this time, held a wooden oar over his shoulder, the light illuminating the right side of his physique, throwing some shadows – giving him depth, value, some swagger. He is not a young man out for a simple afternoon’s fishing anymore – the props and lights gave him the air like he was ready to take on the Royal Henley regatta.

Boren has said she loves a quote by Thomas Edison: “To be an inventor you need an imagination and a pile of junk.”

“My junk pile is composed of colors, shapes, outfits, people, weather, animals, stories and props,” Boren said. “I love treasure hunting on back roads, antique stores, on walks with my dog…everywhere. One fascinating object can give me a painting idea.”

Just recently, she saw a whole row of Dios de la Muerta skull decanters in a liquor store, inspired her to paint them, in her own unique way. The result was a painting called “Remembered,” which will be featured at the upcoming Cowgirl Up - Art from the Other Half - Show at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum in Wickenburg, Ariz from March 23-May 13.

An active member and proponent of the American Women Artists organization, Boren was wearing an AWA 25 in 25 apron during the BAC workshop.

A non-profit organization dedicated to the inspiration, celebration, and encouragement of women in the arts, AWA has worked diligently to bring women artists to the attention of the art world through museum shows, juried competitions in leading galleries around the country, symposiums, workshops and an international exchange.

Their goal is to increase the number of professional opportunities for women in the visual fine arts by creating the kinds of opportunities that lead to greater inclusion.

AWA has a mission to have 25 women’s exhibits in 25 museums because work by women artists only makes up three-five percent of the permanent holdings in U.S.

The AWA’s next exhibition is the Museum Show at the Rockwell Museum, Corning, New York, called Perspectives of the American Experience, which opened Jan. 19 and runs through April 22. Boren is featured with the painting, In the Land of the Yellow Sky. In contrast to the staging and designing for her figurative paintings, for her plein air paintings, Boren looks to capture the adventure of the outdoors just as is, but with surprise, with interesting elements.

She loves painting outdoors for the feeling it gives her, and the detail in color and light.

And her landscapes, seascapes differ from her figurative painting, often showing a more subdued color palette.

It is the variety Boren loves, being able to change out things, which draws her to both plein air painting and figure painting. With a figure as the focus her preliminary work lies in planning and props; her preliminary work in plein air is driving and searching.

In spite of the totally different approaches to the two, there is a parity. In both, Boren puts her heart, mind and soul into to capturing the essence of the landscape, the emotion or movement, resulting in seemingly simple and vibrant beauty in her paintings. Although seemingly simple, nothing is simple about the process Boren undergoes to create a painting that connects with the viewer on different levels.

A master of her craft, which is all about skill, execution, techniques, composition and design, Boren creates breathtaking art – timeless, unique, engaging, enriching and inspiring.

“Having painted so many years now, it is the sense of satisfaction, that the end result came close to my vision,” Boren said, explaining what she enjoys most in her painting, her life – besides walks with her dogs, gardening, tinkering with craft projects and traveling to the coast for some plein air painting.

“Life is really short, so you better enjoy it. I feel like I’m creating something that people value, that they can connect with.

Also, through my work I have some legacy, and I have left some of my spirit behind after I’m gone.

“Creative people are fortunate that way.

They can speak to next generations.”

Born in Alaska, but spending her life in the western states of Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas, Fort Worth-based Boren and her husband Tim are regular visitors to Bosque County, spending many weekends and holidays in the rolling hills of Norse where her mother Mary Ellen lives.

Tough conversations with an aging parent

Whoever said being a kid was going to be easy. As our parents age, we are met with the dilemma of the realization that they may not be the same way they used to be.

When we were small, we looked to our parents to be strong, competent and to have all of the answers. Now the tables may have turned slightly, and it can be hard to accept.

Tough conversations, many of them much like they may have had with us growing up, are now up to us to have with them.

Here are just a few of the dreaded topics that can any child of a senior parent may encounter.

DRIVING

What do you say when you know your parent is no longer fit to drive? Hoping that your parent will just come to the realization that they are no longer capable due to vision problems, hearing, reaction time, etc., well, that probably isn’t going to happen.

If you think they are just going to come up to you and hand over the keys, think again. Asking your parent to drive with you in the vehicle to allow you to access their driving skills can give you an insight into how serious the issue may be.

Before starting the conversation, have some ideas for solutions such as a schedule for you or another sibling or friend to drive

them to appointments, grocery shopping etc. This is also an opportunity to spend quality time with your parent.

Some of my most fond memories are of when I took my grandmother to her weekly grocery shopping trip. Because she could no longer drive safely, we had a standing “date” for our weekly outing. Sometimes, we would go out to eat afterwards or go home and cook together.

NUTRITION & MEDICATION Staying healthy means eating regular meals and taking medications as directed.

As we age, our taste buds may not function efficiently. Food doesn’t taste the way it

used to. Appetite may decrease.

Access to food that is appealing or packaging that is hard to open can deter seniors from eating. Forgetfulness or not understanding how important medications are can lead to skipped doses, or overdosing.

Going over favorite foods, opening packages and putting food into easy access containers can be helpful. Cooking small meals and putting them into freezer safe / microwave safe containers is another way to insure a meal is ready to eat.

Setting up meds in a weekly dose type container makes it easier for seniors to keep up with.

BILLS & FINANCES Managing finances can be tricky. Most people do not want to turn over their checkbook or bill paying to someone else. This is a real control issue and needs to be taken on with respect for your parents.

Ask them about having bills automatically paid through the bank, and deposits such as social security checks made directly into their account. Control is maintained, and at the same time, transactions are made securely.

PERSONAL CARE & HYGIENE This is a delicate issue and a hard topic to approach. It can range in severity from incontinence, to skipping showers, to not going to the eye doctor or making that appointment for a hearing screening.

Poor hygiene is one of the early signs that something is wrong.

Sometimes, one parent will try to take care of the other, and the result is that usually they both suffer. The caretaker ends up in as bad shape or worse, as the person they are trying to care for.

Suggesting home health come in to assist may not be met with acceptance by your parent. Sometimes, involving their physician to help make the idea seem more of a medical issue, which it really is, will be necessary.

There are many topics that come up as our parents age, but the most important thing to remember is to allow them to maintain their respect and dignity. Don’t talk down to your parents. Don’t treat them like children. Listen.

Remember to allow them to express their ideas, fears and concerns and discuss them truthfully.

Freedom and control are two important parts of life that we feel like we lose as we age. Someone is always telling us what we can’t do anymore. Sometimes, our bodies let us know before anyone has

Sometimes, the combination of issues related to health and well-being are such that the conversation about assisted living or skilled nursing must be discussed.

Visiting an assisted living and touring skilled nursing can take some of the fear out of what that can be like. Times have changed and these types of environments can be enjoyable and enriching while providing peace of mind for safety and security. The important thing is allow our parents to keep living.

Hollywood could have predicted the fate of Bosque County’s historic Whipple Truss Bridge. Actually, it can be argued that Cameron Crowe did in 1991.

Evidence may be found in a scene from “Singles,” the young director’s romantic comedy set in Seattle, Washington during the height of the “grunge” era.

Kyra Sedgwick’s character, Linda, listened to her love-interest, Steve, played by Campbell Scott, explain his strategy for reducing auto traffic on highways by designing commuter trains in such a way that they are the more preferable mode of transportation.

Yet, Linda replied, “I still love my car though.”

I still love my car though, too. Americans and Texans – and, yes, even rock stars who wear flannel garments like a chronic skin condition – love their cars as well. Why should we not continue to remain loyal to this travel style?

On our own, we Bosque County residents have upgraded our respective settlements from horse-and-buggy to horseless carriage travel like there was no tomorrow, and we

have supported the construction and maintenance of our mighty bridges accordingly.

Like the “rural purge” of Americana programming from television in the 1960s,

however, our Whipple Truss Bridge is now off-line to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic.

The experience of stepping on its span and viewing the Bosque River and its natural glory above the water in panorama like our ancestors had is gone. Our memories of such moments only remain.

The wrought iron bridge had a good 133year run as a living landmark. It withstood a number of floods over the Bosque River, ice and wind storms under the valley’s atmosphere, and perhaps even a few bumps and scrapes by vehicles driven by individuals who imbibed a few too many adult beverages.

As County Road 333, it carried countless people, animals and goods across the river in and out of Clifton’s market as part of the historic Meridian Highway system, a transcontinental network of roadways stitched together from Canada to Mexico.

Known as “Main Street of North America,” the Meridian Highway is one of the original heritage trails of the modern era – in high use from 1911 to the early 1940s. In Texas, its legacy is eclipsed not only by the legendary

Chisholm Trail and also the glamour of the current Interstate Highway System.

If you can believe, still in this context, the construction techniques and materials used on the Whipple Truss Bridge were state-ofthe-art in its day.

It’s geometry designed by its inventor and namesake – Squire Whipple – is as elegant as its wrought iron relative in Paris – the Effiel Tower – which is five years younger than our proud bridge made by the Wrought Iron Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio.

Attempts have been made to spare our historic bridge from obscurity. It received its Texas Historical Landmark designation and plaque in 1996 with the aid of the Bosque County Historical Commission and its numerous supporters.

While it is not as of yet on the National Registry of Historical Places, the bridge is still eligible due to its rarity. As the Historic Bridge Foundation has said, “This bridge is one of only a few surviving examples in the entire state of Texas of a Whipple truss bridge.”

Yet, our Whipple was no match for modern thirsts for transportation, which our local government could do nothing but quench.

Opportunity to build a new bridge using federal and state resources had been on the table for over 20 years. With no alternative plans and organized offerings, the new blood in Meridian took advantage of the savory deal, curiously arguing that if we missed this gravy train, it wouldn’t return for decades, if at all.

The argument was echoed in Clifton’s municipal hall, pointing to the state’s bridge infrastructure studies cited with traffic safety concerns for travel over the old rickety

A new concrete bridge would also give another passage through Clifton for heavyweight emergency services vehicles and citizen evacuations should the FM 219 bridge become blocked downstream during a flood or other disasters.

Awakened, a small group of advocates gave a last-minute plea to stop the new bridge’s construction, noting the cultural and historical value of the Whipple. They questioned the reasoning for building the new span so close to the old one – a mere 10 feet – which seemed a temptation to daredevils of all ages and styles.

The historical preservationists further countered on the safety point – that a bridge two lanes wide – as opposed to one lane as the older model had – could increase traffic speeds to harmful levels. Why not build the newer bridge more upstream, closer to the municipal airport and its residential area, they asked?

A state historical preservation group, Preservation Texas, was also called in to place the historic bridge on its annual list of top endangered places in the Lone Star State.

“This is a very important bridge for Texas,” said Evan Thompson, executive director of Preservation Texas. “We’ve listed a number of bridges on our list. This advocacy would ensure that it is preserved and restored, if not maintained for vehicular use but at least for some pedestrian use.”

Even the idea for turning the Whipple into a pedestrian-only pass on the county’s dime was squashed due to the financial cost of renovating it to hold human weight grouped over longer periods of time. That said, the powers-that-be have left the door open for private pockets to fund and repair any such public space there.

40 has outweighed the pursuit of constructive action to reclaim the historic bridge for an “adaptive re-use.” It may also be too late to remove the bridge from its pedestal for placement within the nearby Clifton City Park.

As it stands, the Whipple will remain hovering over the Bosque, its pony trusses removed preventing human approaches on it. From its south side pointing north, it may still serve as a backdrop for future photo-ops for graduations, proms, weddings, and the like as well as inspiration for painters and poets.

At the same time, the new bridge is developing a history of its own – as a spinoff of the older, more established series model.

In October 2017, two humongous cranes lifted 17 long concrete beams – five of which that were the longest were placed high above the river onto two concrete pedestals – for the new bridge’s birth.

Within a blink of an eye, so to speak, the work was done. It took a whole day for crews to set up the cranes and then another day to place the beams.

The once-in-a-life-time feat was thanks to Joyce Crane, a subcontractor under the project’s prime contractor Hodges and

The new bridge is expected to have a long service life. The standard measured by the Texas Department of Transportation is 75 years of service.

Once complete and open in spring 2018, the new bridge may carry much heavier loads at greater frequency at faster speeds across the river than its fossilized twin next door ever would have.

Between now and then, will a group of local civic-minded entrepreneurs form to raise money with plans to re-purpose and re-enforce the iron monument’s structure for a public use? Could they take inspiration from Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park? Or New York City’s High Line?

It’s hard to say, considering that the perception exists that Clifton City Park nearby is under-utilized by the local population, which lives beyond an easy, pleasant walking distance to it. Plus, these grounds don’t have the advantage of a public-private service that programs activities in it year-round.

The area immediately on the west side of the twin bridges used to be a fully-functioning neighborhood with houses and daily-life activities – including youth

sporting events, veterans’ club meetings, and various types of seasonal community festivals.

Major floods in the 1990s led to the plain’s re-zoning at federal hands, and plans to move Cub Stadium and the rest of the sports complex to the north end of town went forward at the school district level.

W. Leon Smith – former Clifton mayor and former publisher of The Clifton Record – believed city park could have been resurrected into a “heritage village” tourism site had the new bridge not allowed vehicles to buzz so close to the Whipple.

Finding the million dollars, a figure that has been offered in various cost estimates, to upgrade just the bridge will now be even more difficult, Smith said.

If one thing is for certain, we set in motion the creation of a much more robust habitat for trolls to live near the Norwegian Capital of Texas in the future.

May the good Lord forgive our nearsightedness in attracting such giant monsters... or may He encourage Clifton’s stunning new marketing promotional campaign.

Whichever comes first. ***wink wink*** To be continued...?

Voice of Aggieland How many Aggies does it take to sing a song? Sixty to seventy cadets, but they get the job done right.

The Bosque Arts Center welcomes the Texas A&M Singing Aggie Cadets to Frazier Performance Hall on Sunday, March 25. The Singing Aggies, known as the “Voice of Aggieland,” are the current day version of the group which morphed from the first recorded singing organization at the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas in 1893.

The original nine-member glee club was made up of both students and faculty. Today, the Singing Cadets are made up of students numbering between 60-70 members.

Around the turn of the 20th century, this former glee club boasted 20 members and made its first major road trip to Houston in 1905, where they sang with a 400-member chorus.

The Singing Aggies have achieved a number of accolades and performance milestones. In the 193738 school year, the group organized under its official constitution. In 1939, the Singing Aggies went national with their first performance at the Sugar Bowl game.

The official name of “Singing Aggies” was adopted in 1940 after a naming contest was held. Their first full time director, Richard Jenkins, increased the group’s national profile through a series of tours throughout

44 the American south.

In the 1950s, the group finally settled on a group size of around sixty members.

During this decade, the group performed its first telecast in 1963 during the televised Miss Teenage America pageant. For eight years, the group served in the capacity of contestant escorts and performers. Concerts were held throughout Texas including a performance on the Ed Sullivan Show.

Additional stops included a trip to the White House when Senator John Tower sponsored a concert for local dignitaries including former President Richard Nixon.

The first international trip occurred in 1974 with a trip overseas to Romania. This trip, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, included three weeks of performances throughout the country. International competitions have generated medals and honors, with a silver medal at the International Choral Festival in 1979 in Hawaii, a silver medal in Mexico in 1983 and a gold medal when they returned to Hawaii in 1993.

The Singing Aggies have performed at a number of events in recent years, including a trip to the white house for President George W. Bush’s reception to welcome home the athletes from the 2006 Winter Olympics.

Most recently, they sang last October at the “One America Appeal,” sponsored by

EVENTS George H. W. Bush, joining such notables as all five living former U.S. presidents, Alabama, Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers Band and Lady Gaga, along with a host of other notable performers. This concert benefited the victims of the hurricanes in September and October of 2017.

Their repertoire includes a wide variety of music which includes gospel music, hymns, school songs like the “Aggie War Hymn” and modern day tunes, although the music of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s remain favorites.

They typically utilize a piano, drums and guitars for their performances. On occasion, they have incorporated costumes and other entertainment in their performances.

The Singing Cadets, performing 70-80 concerts a year, have represented Texas A&M traveling to South American, Europe, Eastern Europe, China, South Africa and England. The group performs regularly throughout Texas and can be seen at sporting events, dinners for presidents and many other selected events.

The Singing Aggies will appear at the Bosque Arts Center at Frazier Performance Hall on Sunday, March 25 at 3 p.m.

SIMONE WICHERS-VOSS Bosque County resident – for privacy reasons let’s call her “Lou” – had an annual mammogram religiously since she was 40. Because when it comes to cancer, it is just better to catch it at an early stage, she figured.

Coincidentally, her exams at the local Goodall-Witcher clinic were scheduled in October – breast cancer awareness month.

Still, when in 2016 she heard the words “We’re seeing an irregularity, and we’re sending you through to get an ultrasound,” Lou’s heart sank. She had not felt any lumps or seen irregularities throughout the year.

For further diagnosis, Lou was referred to a specialist at the Scott and White Hospital in Waco. And within a week of a biopsy, she was being scheduled for surgery to remove the invasive ductal carcinoma.

She was given two options – removal of the breast, or the removal of the lump with wide margins.

Lou chose the lumpectomy. She knew radiation would be part of the follow-up. After surgery, there was good and bad news. Even though her lymph nodes were clear of cancer cells, the lump turned out to be three centimeters big, and the specialist added chemotherapy to the follow-up treatments.

And with all the challenges behind her – working while doing chemo, the sensitive skin around the radiation area, the trauma of losing her hair, - and treatments ending on Oct. 6.

Consequently, she and her husband were headed for a Caribbean Cruise Oct. 7.

“You can choose to laugh or cry,” Lou said. “I chose to keep

48 laughing.”

But she couldn’t have done it without her great support system of family, friends and co-workers that pulled her through.

For them she is immensely grateful.

Part of that support system is also felt through the Bosque County Relay for Life – an American Cancer Society event that raises awareness to cancer and cancer support. Even though it is a fundraising event, in this community, the event’s overall feel is to remember loved ones lost, to honor survivors, support those battling cancer and to commend the caregivers.

Now a year later, Lou is on hormone medication, and is happy to have been given the “all clear,” with regular checkups.

“Having regular mammograms saved my life probably,” Lou said. “And if I can convince just one more person to do screening, I will tell my story every time and tell them to get their mammograms religiously.”

According to the Department of State Health Service Sept. 2016 report, cancer in adults is the second most common cause of death in Texas (following heart disease), and for children (following fatal injuries).

The incidence rate for breast cancer was 108 new cases per 100,000 women in Texas, of which 20 died from the disease.

During the past two decades, there have been marked decreases in prostrate, lung and colorectal cancer rates in men. And in women, breast, lung, colorectal and cervical cancer. Reduced numbers of smokers and increased screenings have contributed to the declines.

Screening offers the ability for secondary prevention by detecting cancer early, before symptoms appear. Because when abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat or cure.

By the time symptoms appear, the cancer may have grown and spread to the lymph nodes or other organs. This can make the cancer harder to treat or cure, and the treatments are much harder on the patient.

Screening for colorectal and cervical cancers can prevent cancer by allowing the removal of precancerous lesions. For example, the recent decline in colorectal cancer incidence and mortality rates has been attributed to the introduction and uptake of colonoscopy.

Certain cancers appear at certain ages, and it is important to realize that when your doctor suggests a screening test, it does not always mean he or she thinks you have cancer. They just want you to

HEALTH improve your odds.

Mammograms to detect breast cancer, PAP smears and human papilomavirus testing to detect cervical cancer and sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy for rectal-colon cancer are all recommended, because their benefits outweigh the risks. The screenings are helpful both in finding cancers early and in decreasing the chance of dying from those cancers. This is why the Center for Disease Control recommends these screenings.

Mammography to screen for breast cancer has been shown to reduce mortality from the disease among women ages 40-74, especially those aged 50 or older.

Expert groups generally recommend that people who are at average risk for colorectal cancer have screening at ages 50-75.

Pap test and human papillomavirus (HPV) testing is generally recommended to begin at age 21 and to end at age 65, as long as recent results have been normal.

The low-dose helical computed tomography test to screen for lung cancer has been shown to reduce lung cancer deaths among heavy smokers ages 55-74.

But not all screening tests are helpful.

For some cancers, finding and treating the cancer early does not improve the chance of a cure or help the person live longer.

And most tests have risks.

This is why the Center for Disease Control recommends these screenings. recommended screenings while other screenings are not recommended.

Screening for ovarian, prostate, and skin cancers has not been shown to reduce deaths from those cancers. That does mean that people should be aware and recognize warning signs and symptoms of these type of cancers and to visit a doctor for advice so they can reduce their risks and improve their odds.

For example, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommends against prostate specific antigen (PSA)-based screening for men who have no symptoms.

Even though a PSA test can find prostate cancer earlier than no screening at all, the PSA test may have false positive or false negative results.

This can mean that men without cancer may have abnormal results and get tests that are not necessary. It could also mean that the test could miss cancer in men who may need to be treated.

Abnormal results can cause anxiety. The test that comes after an abnormal result on a PSA test is a biopsy, a minor surgery to get small samples of prostate cells or

tissues, which can cause pain, infection, bleeding, and may even miss cancer that needs to be treated.

The incidence rate for prostate cancer is similar to that of breast cancer. It was 89 new cases per 100,000 men in Texas in 2016 and about 18 died from the disease.

And with that said, it is all a matter of weighing the options, the risks and giving yourself peace of mind.

Sixty-six-year-old Bosque County resident Porter – also an alias – had always been healthy, and had never spent the night in a hospital. Upon retiring in 2006, he finally felt he had the time to get a complete physical after his wife had strongly encouraged him, repeatedly.

He scheduled an appointment with his physician at the Goodall-Witcher hospital for “the works.”

And as expected, all vitals and blood results were good, except his PSA levels.

They were significantly elevated, suggesting prostate problems.

“I was surprised,” Porter said who knows quite a few prostate cancer survivors. “I didn’t have any symptoms.”

A biopsy at the Temple Scott and White urology department confirmed the cancerous growth. Because prostate cancer is a slow developing cancer, he was given the option to “wait and see,” or surgery.

After talking to people with similar experiences, Porter decided on surgery.

“There are a lot of vital organs in that area,” Porter said explaining his decision.

“It can spread, which is pretty dangerous, and you need to catch it before it does.”

Now, Porter has his PSA checked regularly, along with his other regular blood tests like cholesterol and sugar. He is left with a three inch abdominal scar and is extremely grateful the cancer has not recurred.

“I encourage all men, especially older men to check this regularly,” Porter said.

“It’s just a blood test.”

And in weighing the options, Porter advised men to talk to as many people you can to get as much The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has concluded that there is not enough evidence to recommend for or against routine screening – total-body examination by a clinician – to find skin cancers early.

Doctors often recommend that people who are at risk for skin cancer examine their skin regularly or have a health care provider do so. Such exams have not been shown to decrease the risk of dying from skin cancer, and they may lead to overtreatment.

However, people should be aware of changes in their skin, such as a new mole or a change to an existing mole, and report these to their doctor promptly.

In Texas, melanoma – the most aggressive skin cancer – incidence rates have increased by 17 percent in men and 15 percent in women since 1995.

So, screening is highly recommended in several cases. Screening may be covered by insurance without a deductible or co-pay. But what if you have no insurance?

Individuals with inadequate health insurance are more likely to be diagnosed with advanced cancer and less likely to survive the disease, according to the Cancer Screening Test Use report of March 2017.

In 2015, 71.5 percent of women aged 50 – mammography use was lowest for women who reported being uninsured (35.3 percent) and without a usual source of health care (32.9 percent).

“Free” and “healthcare” rarely run in the same sentence, but free mammograms, Pap tests and colon cancer screenings are available throughout the Bosque River Valley through Moncrief Cancer Institute, enhancing healthcare for those who don’t have insurance.

The CDC’s National Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program also offers free or low-cost mammograms and Pap tests nationwide to qualifying patients.

“I was so thankful,” said Mary Mojica of Granbury. “If I hadn’t found out about Moncrief ’s mobile clinic screenings in Granbury, I honestly don’t know what I would have done because I didn’t have any other options.”

Cancer runs in Mojica’s family. It has taken a toll on her father, two brothers, two grandparents, three uncles, two aunts and a cousin. When doctors found a suspicious area on Mojica’s mammogram, she worried she would be next to get the disease.

50 “I know Moncrief ’s nurses worked really hard to find the funds for my diagnostic mammogram and biopsy of that suspicious area of my breast,” said the 53-yearold technician who lost her insurance when she was laid off at a microbiology lab. “It turned out to be non-cancerous but it was so scary because of my family history of cancer.”

Moncrief Cancer Institute, based in Fort Worth and part of the UT Southwestern Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center, provides mammograms to about 10,000 women a year.

Its 35-county coverage area includes seven counties in the Bosque River Valley – Bosque, Erath, Hamilton, Hill, Johnson, McLennan and Somervell.

As part of the outreach to rural counties, some screenings also take place at partner hospitals.

“By building community relationships with strong partners like Goodall-Witcher Hospital in Clifton and Hamilton General Hospital in Hamilton, we not only offer lifesaving screenings, but also navigate a patient through treatment, if necessary,” said Melissa Moreno, Moncrief Community Outreach Coordinator.

“There is really nothing in the realm of early detection or cancer screening that we cannot accomplish,” said Dr. Laci Waner of Goodall-Witcher’s Clifton Medical Clinic.

“And with Moncrief ’s Voucher program aiding those in financial need, there’s very little reason we can’t reach and treat every case.”

For breast cancer, the clinics range includes physical exams, mammograms with mammography and ultrasound equipment on site and genetic pre-disposition BRCA blood tests.

Dr. Carter Smith is the hospital’s laparoscopic surgeon, and offers Cologuard – a non-invasive method to examine DNA in a stool sample – and colonoscopies for rectal-colon cancer screening.

For cervical cancers, the physicians offer Pap tests and routine gynecology appointments. The clinic follows the thorough approach that request blood and genetic work to look for markers and flags in combination with a pap smear to triangulate on cancer.

If any of these screening test show concern, the GW physicians work closely with area oncologists and specialists to whom the patient can be referred.

Students in the fourth grade studying Texas History draw a picture of a person, place or event from Texas History. Students in the seventh grade write an essay about an interesting person, place or event from Texas History. The ceremony will include all awards presentations as well as a short program in honor of Texas Independence.

During the days at the museum youth third grade and up learn about Native American science and technology, using materials, land and art.

Students will get hands-on experience with cordage, throwing an atlatl, painting with rocks and flint knapping. The camp is led

This year’s program presented by NWS meteorologist Eric Mattella discusses thunderstorm formation, ingredients, and features associated with severe and non-severe storms. Several examples and cases for
