Reasons to Volunteer for Your Association Plant Now for Maximum Root Growth Protect Your Water Pipes from Freezing Earth Day / Donation & Dumping Station Animal Laws: What You Need To Know

JANUARY 2018

It’s a new year! At the mailbox, while walking the dog or when you see a moving van arrive, introduce yourself. Learn your neighbors’ names and regularly offer a friendly greeting. Hopefully you’ll be living in your home for quite some time – make a small effort with a smile, and enjoy your neighborhood!

Reasons to Volunteer for Your Association Per the governing documents of the Stone Oak Property Owners Association, there will be an Annual Meeting of the membership on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 at 7:00PM at Independence Hill, 20500 Huebner Road, San Antonio, TX 78258. At the meeting, three Stone Oak commercial property owners and three Stone Oak residential property owners will be elected to the Board, each to serve for a two-year term. You can find more information regarding these candidates on our website, www.StoneOakPOA. com, under the “Board of Directors” tab. A Board Director must be an individual or entity that is a member of the Stone Oak Property Owners Association (SOPOA), therefore a Stone Oak property owner. Once elected, they serve a two-year term, and may be placed on the ballot at the end of the term for re-election if desired. Directors are volunteers, are not compensated for their time, and act in accordance with the Governing Documents of the Association (which can be found on the website under the “Governing Documents” tab.)

Although your Association may have a Management Company, your Association Board and Committees are made up of volunteers- people who give their time for the good of their community. Here are some reasons why you should consider volunteering in your community: 1. Protect your property values and maintain the quality of life in your community. 2. Meet your neighbors, make friends, and exchange opinions. 3. Share ideas in helping to correct problems you see in your community. 4. Give back. Repay a little of what’s been done for you. 5. Get educated on procedures, such as establishing rules. Learn how it’s done. 6. Express yourself. Help with creative projects like community beautification. Volunteer, and have some fun accomplishing good things with your neighbors.

January Stone Oak POA Assessment Billing January assessment invoices were mailed out midDecember to all Stone Oak property owners. It is the responsibility of the property owner to alert the POA of any address, contact name, or email changes. If you need to change your mailing address, contact name, email or phone number, please check our website, www.StoneOakPOA.com, for our Account Information Change Form. Do You Know Where Your Association Documents Are? When you bought a home in the Stone Oak community, you should have received copies of all Stone Oak POA governing documents—including the Master Plan with policies, rules and regulations—prior to or at closing. (These documents are also available at www.StoneOakPOA.com under the “Governing Documents” tab.) You should have also received documents pertaining to your neighborhood HOA. Sometimes these documents get lost among all the other papers you received at closing. And many homebuyers are so involved moving into their new homes, they don’t take the time to read all the fine print. It’s very important to have copies of the governing documents because you’ll be expected to know and comply with all rules and regulations of the community. You’ll also want to stay informed by reading all materials provided by the association. As a homeowner, you have a right to these documents. If you can’t locate yours, check the Stone Oak POA website for the Stone Oak POA documents, and/or contact your neighborhood HOA Management Company for your HOA documents. Management Company information pertaining to your neighborhood can be found on the “Neighborhoods of Stone Oak” page on the Stone Oak POA website.

Plant Now for Maximum Root Growth By Mark A. Peterson, SAWS Conservation & Gardenstyles

Don’t the cold, damp weather fool you — this is the perfect time to plant not only trees, but all sorts of plants and seeds. The list will astound and amaze you. First, why can and should we plant in January? In the South, the ground never freezes and therefore plant roots have the opportunity to grow throughout the winter, maximizing their root growth before the advent of the nasty summer. The earlier they are planted, the faster they’ll become established and they’ll require little to no supplemental water. Some plants are like Aesop’s hare and will grow fast, but soon fade in the April heat. Bulbs, winter annuals and some winter vegetables fall into this category, but other plants really enjoy the cool season and are ready for long, happy life in South Texas. So what can we plant in January?

Tubers – this group includes the bulbs of tulips and daffodils, corms of the gladiolus and rhizomes of the irises. Plant in January for their full effect before the heat. Canna lilies and elephant ears are planted much later. Keep the bed or area well drained. Research tubers that will thrive APPLE PEST CONTROL in our soil. primrose and Persian cyclamen. All of these flowers provide color and aroma to the winter Texas garden. A word on primrose: you will love them, but so do slugs and snails. Provide the appropriate protection such as a trap or repellant. Don’t let the cold weather keep you from getting out in the garden. Now is the perfect time to plant. ©Neighborhood News, Inc. PAGE 3

Pet Rules Stone Oak is proud to be pet-friendly, and we’re happy your four-legged family members are part of our community. Pet owners are expected to adhere to all local pet laws and ordinances, including leash laws. Unfortunately, our office has recently taken a number of complaints regarding dogs running loose. This is not only dangerous for the dog, but an angry dog on the loose can lead to bigger problems- for your neighbors, the dog, and YOU. It’s important your pets don’t create an unpleasant environment for your neighbors. To avoid unnecessary disputes and potential rule violations, here are some guidelines owners should follow to ensure their furry friends continue to be a welcome addition to the neighborhood. Read the Rules: While most HOAs welcome pets, be sure to check your HOA’s rules and requirements. This can be found in your HOA’s governing documents. Your HOA restrictions will most likely be more restrictive regarding the permitted number of pets per household when comparing to the City’s guidelines- but when you live within an HOA, you agree to adhere to their restrictions. If you have questions regarding your HOA’s pet restrictions, give your management company a call. Service animals are exempt from an association’s pet requirements. However, please contact your HOA board or manager to ask for an accommodation to keep a service animal. Proof of the service animal’s training or a doctor’s certification may be required. Keep it Clean: No one wants to see, smell or accidently step in the “gift” your dog left on the grassy common area. So when your dog needs to go, be sure to properly dispose of it, preferably in a pet waste disposal can. Not only will this keep our community looking better, but it will help keep ground water clean and help prevent the spread of fecalborne diseases. Quiet Down: Pets will be noisy from time to time. However, when loud barking or meowing becomes annoying to neighbors, it’s time to help your pet become less talkative. First, try to find out what causes your pets to get vocal: Do they get noisy when they’ve been alone and bored all day and need some playtime? Have they gone through a stressful change in environment recently? Are they suffering from health issues? Do they simply like saying “hello” to every squirrel, person or car that passes by? When you’ve identified the cause, take remedial actions such as confining them to an area where they feel calm while you’re away, removing or blocking as many stimuli as possible, exercising them more and spending more time with them. You can also take them to a professional or search online for tips on how to train your pets not to get too noisy. No Wandering: According to the U.S. Humane Society, an unleashed dog has an average life span of less than four years. Allowing your dog or cat to run free threatens their health and welfare, as well as the happiness it brings to you. For the safety of your pets as well as all residents, please do not allow your pets to roam unattended outside. Along with helping protect your pets, leashing your dog is the law.

store and wrap that insulation around the exposed hose bibbs at your home. You might need a little duct tape to secure the insulation.

Be Prepared to Protect Your Water Pipes in Freezing Temps

• If you have a sprinkler system, make sure you turn it off. You really shouldn’t be watering your yard this time of year anyway. Grass hibernates over the winter months and prepares itself for the growing season in the spring.

Don’t you just love winter weather in South Texas? One day your wearing shorts and out for a walk. The next day your worrying about a freeze killing your plants and maybe even breaking your water pipes. So, the best advice for making sure you don’t find yourself without water because of a frozen water pipe is to be prepared.

• If you plan to be away from home for several days, shutting off the water can reduce the chances of broken pipes. Also, keep the heater on in your house with the thermostat set to around 55 degrees.

If your remember a few things from your chemistry classes, water has a unique property in that it expands when it freezes. Obviously, that expansion can put lots of pressure on the water pipes at your home, and that’s when problems can occur. In fact, if your pipes aren’t insulated, and the temperature drops below 20 degrees, they can become frozen and crack. Pipes that freeze most frequently are outdoor hose bibbs, swimming pool supply lines, water sprinkler lines, and water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets. Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation are also subject to freezing.

• You’ve probably heard that letting water drip from outdoor faucets can help prevent freezing pipes. Well, that is true, but it also wastes water. By being prepared for a sudden drop in temperatures and insulating those outdoor faucets, you should be able to avoid having to let your faucets drip.

• Be a good neighbor. If your neighbor is away or you are next to a vacant house and you suspect a water leak, call your water service provider immediately.

• You can always call a licensed plumber for help.

What are the only two signs you want to see in your yard?

Also keep in mind that some of the Trinity Glen Rose District lies in the foothills of the Texas Hill Country, and temperatures can get a little colder there as compared to the middle of San Antonio. Here are a few suggestions for keeping those pipes ready for those bitter winter blasts that blow through on occasion. • Disconnect water hoses from the hose bibbs.

• Painting • Small or Large Repairs • Drywall Repair & Installation • Remodeling • Electrical • Deck Construction • Ceramic Work • Rotted Wood Replacement • Window & Door Replacement • We do it all–large or small Irwin Dreyfus 210-885-8465 Email at diversified1@icloud.com www.diversifiedremodeling.net Stone Oak - January 2018 - Vol 23 No 1

NEIGHBORHOOD REPRESENTATIVES The Neighborhood Representative Committee meets the second Wednesday of each month (with the exception of December and January) at 7:00PM in the Director’s Room at the Club at Sonterra. These meetings last about one hour, and are designed to assist in communication between residential neighborhoods and the POA, while providing the opportunity for communities to ask questions, and trade valuable ideas and information. Past speakers have included SAWS, CPS, the City of San Antonio, SAPD, and Allied/Republic Waste. This group is vital to the Stone Oak community, and its members are usually the first to receive valuable information and updates from the POA. Many entities such as SAPD, CPS, and SAWS also have come to rely on them to get information out to the public quickly. If you do not see a representative listed below for your neighborhood, please consider volunteering. (A neighborhood is welcome to have two representatives and alternate attendance.)
