SPEAKING legally

CRIME prevention

The Civilian Police Academy scenario. You’ll interact with one of our actors and be forced to make a decision, shoot or don’t shoot. This one may sound stressful but don’t worry you’ll have a second or two to make your decision.

Representing Yourse lf In A Legal Matter People

without formal legal education may be able to represent themselves on some simple legal matters themselves, which is called a pro se representation. However, representing oneself in a legal matter can be risky because each step of the legal process may involve consequences for which the person may not even be aware. For example, default judgments may be taken, findings may be made by the court, or opposing party claims may be taken as true in the litigation or discovery process if answers are not filed timely. For example, having evidence in a case and having evidence in a case that is admissible in court are two entirely different things most of the time. Also, the Do It Yourself approach to legal affairs often times requires a lot of time and energy that can be handled in a cost and time efficient matter by a lawyer. Moreover, most legal situations require a decree of objectivity, which may be compromised when a person is so closely involved in the case by representing themselves. At KLIEM & ASSOCIATES, we pride ourselves on understanding our client’s needs by always being mindful of their time and resources. We are able to handle a number of legal representations under a flat fee type arrangement which gives the client assurance of the total costs they may incur for those matters. KLIEM & ASSOCIATES— “Not just a law firm. A relationship.”

If I were a police officer I’d… Or would you? Have you ever wondered how the Victoria Police Department operates, or what challenges the officers face on a daily basis? Maybe, you’ve wondered what the training consists of or what you, as a police officer, would do under certain circumstances. Well, I have the answer for you. The Victoria Police Department Civilian Police Academy is now accepting applications for the 2018 class. It’s open to the public and completely free of charge. We start the first Tuesday in February and continue weekly for 12 weeks. Throughout the course, you will gain a working knowledge of the Victoria Police Department through lectures and hands on practical exercises. Some of the hands on classes include building searches, in which you will be given an opportunity to search and clear a darkened building. You and your partner will enter the building armed only with your flashlight and sidearm and attempt to find and arrest any “criminals” hiding inside. Another class will place you and a partner in a potentially deadly force situation. You will be armed with weapons loaded with paint pellets and presented a

Other hands on classes include handcuffing, fingerprinting, field sobriety tests, traffic stops and everyone’s favorite; firearms. Yes, for those who participate in the entire program, we conclude with a trip to the range where you will have the opportunity to operate several different firearms used by police. You will then have the opportunity to test your skills against those of your fellow students in a friendly competition. There are also demonstrations by our S.W.A.T. team and K-9 officers as well as a live Taser demonstration (if we can get a volunteer). The classes cover all aspects of police work and give you the opportunity to ask questions of the professionals who do this job every day. Individuals who apply for the Civilian Police Academy must be at least 18 years of age. is part of the Distinguished Citizen series of classes offered by the city which also include the Citizens Academy and the Civilian Fire Academy. When we think of glass we often have thoughts of dinnerware, wine glasses, windows and a variety of other common household items. But for one local couple, glass takes on a whole different meaning. started raising a family. “She GIL and beth Riedesel moved and hooked me because she couldn’t

back to the area to live on their family property east of Yorktown eleven years ago. Both of them had the privilege of growing up in Yorktown and graduating from the local high school. Gil graduated from Yorktown High School in 1971 and made his way to the University of Texas becoming an electrical engineer. Beth graduated from Yorktown High School in 1977 and attended the University of Texas and Sam Houston State University. In 1979 they married

make a limeade the right way.” Jokes Gil. Gil worked for years with a company based in Colorado and although his career as an electrical engineer raised his family, this local Yorktown native has a unique and artistic passion. Through the years Gil Riedesel has become known as The Glass Dude.

IN

1979 Gil started working with stained glass and making

stained glass windows. Beautiful stained glass panels decorate their home and those of others. Over the years, however, the stained glass has taken a back seat somewhat as he began to make unique creations with glass pieces. In 2014 Beth purchased a kiln for Gil and this is when he began fusing glass. Fused glass is an ancient process where the glass has been fired (heat-processed) in a kiln at high temperatures ranging from 1099 degrees Fahrenheit to 1501 degrees or even higher. Bowls, pendants, ear rings, starfish, wine bottle serving dishes

and various other ornate pieces are just a few of the items in their inventory. Each item is a real work of art and no two pieces of any of their items are the same. Each piece is one of a kind.

The

chemistry behind the work that he does is fascinating. “With fusing, you can’t just mix any kind of glass together.” States Gil. “It has to be compatible.” Different types of glass contain different types of metal and the presence of these metals combined with other elements such as heat bring out the beautiful features of the glass in each piece. Mixing incompatible glass can result in breaking immediately or even after time sitting on a shelf. For each type of work, many steps are involved which include stacking, heating and cooling processes. For some pieces the process becomes more complicated and time consuming, but the end result is a beautiful, one of a kind work of art.

fall to sell their wares. From Corpus Christi to Austin and many places in between, the Riedesels know what towns like what items and they endeavor to have the products available to meet their customers desires. They also have some of their pieces for sale in various art locations in Rockport and Corpus Christi.

WITH each passing year, the

Riedesels learn different techniques and use new creative ideas to incorporate into their work. Beth is currently hoping to become more skillful at wire wrapping this year to enhance their jewelry work. In

addition to the glass work, Gil also does some woodwork projects such as baptismal chests. The beauty of all these special works of art is stunning and after seeing the work of the Glass Dude you will never look at glass the same.

For more information on The Glass Dude and the products they offer, check out their website at www.theglassdude.com or on Facebook at “The Glass Dude”. Also they can be reached via email at gil@theglassdude.com or beth@ theglassdude.com or by calling (361) 564-3195.

FOR Gil and Beth, this fascina-

tion with glass not only became a passion but has now turned into a business. “What happened was I just started playing and started making stuff and all of a sudden Beth couldn’t consume all the things I was making…if I’m going to keep playing we need to start selling.” As a result, the couple attends 10 to 12 arts and craft shows a year in the WWW.ALLTHINGSCROSSROADS.COM

When we were children we

heard the stories of the North Pole and the elves under Santa’s supervision working all year around to get ready for that big event, Christmas Eve. As we matured, we realized at some point that this was all a sweet story but yet we still enjoyed the magic and the wonder of the Christmas season. But for some folks in the Crossroads area, Christmas is an event that is prepared for many months in advance. They may not be elves tirelessly building and creating toys, but these individuals are on the lookout for the products and trendy items for the next Christmas season. 14 |

Bobby

, Tommy, and Cindy Long have been operating a family owned business in the Crossroads for the past 42 years. Shop the World stores located in Victoria and Rockport pride themselves in being a locally owned and operated business and supporting other family owned business world wide. The Long family has traveled extensively all over the world to ďŹ nd that specialty import manufactured by other family owned businesses. Shop the World specializes in home decor but their big specialty is the Christmas season.

Upon

entering the Victoria location, customers are made aware of the elaborately decorated trees that stand tall throughout the store. Themed trees of

various designs fill one with the magic of the Christmas season. Some of the trees are so elaborately decorated that it is hard to believe that there is a tree under all the decorations. Dining tables ornately decorated with beautiful Christmas dinnerware. Anything and everything Christmas can be found at Shop the World. Trees, wreaths, elves, ornaments, stockings and much more can be found.

All Things Crossroads magazine caught up with designer Belinda Hawkins at Shop the World to give us the scoop on the store and what they have to offer. “The transformations for the holidays happen in July.” States Belinda. “That’s when all our Christmas merchandise starts coming in. The guys go to market right after Christmas in January so they already have Christmas in mind for the year coming. So once it starts coming, it comes in July so that we start putting up the trees in July. At market they have all the vendors there so they shop there. For Christmas it is once a year in Las Vegas. That’s where they do most of their buying for Christmas and

they know what’s new and what’s going to be popular for that year.” This Christmas the most popular trees for the store have been the whimsical trees such as Santa or Snowman themed as well as the Gingerbread tree. A great deal of rustic themed trees are also popular in the Crossroads area. Many of these themed trees take an entire day to decorate. Each tree is an actual work of art. Shop the World has returning clientele every year seeking the expertise and uniqueness of the store’s products. Belinda will start as early as October decorating trees for clients with her busiest time being in November for tree decorating. In between the preparations for the holiday season, other decor is popular throughout the year such as Easter decor and various other seasonal items.

Although the Christmas decorating season seems to be approaching earlier and earlier each year, Belinda believes that this year the Crossroads area was really looking for some happiness to take the place of the recent tragedies experienced by Hurri-

cane Harvey. “They were just tired of the gloom and doom.” States Belinda. “They want some happiness. I’m glad to bring it to them.” The message that Shop the World wants to give the Crossroads communities is the joy. “They are such a close-knit family.” States Belinda. “We have so many customers that love Christmas. They come here and find it. They like us to transform it for them and they even invite us to come see what they have done.” The family at Shop the World inspires their customers and that inspiration is contagious. A walk into Shop the World is like walking into a winter wonderland. Christmas may be over for most of us but for the Long family and their store family at Shop the World, Christmas is just beginning. Shop the World is located at 6902 N. Navarro in Victoria and 2955 Highway 35 N. in Rockport, Texas. is here! As we get older, does it seem like time just passes by faster, or is it just me? We’ve rotated around the sun once again, so now is a good time to look back over 2017, as an individual and as a community. It’s time to remember accomplishments and celebrations to warm our hearts. This is a perfect time to save memories and prepare for the years to come.

Photographs

We all have a camera in our pocket at all times. I know each of us has about 1000 photos on our smart phones! But how many are printed and put in frames, albums, or even tacked to a bulletin board? This question was raised to me while visiting a pal’s home in Port O’Connor. Andy, in his sixties, said some of his best memories are framed. Snapshots of his sons and wife accent the shelves. And, of

course, a sweet story to go along with the images. My dear friend Shannon is an excellent example of capturing and displaying memories in print. In her home, photos are everywhere! Pictures of her three children are creatively framed. Family photos are taken often, and it’s so amazing to see the changes in each face. Each time girlfriends get together, “selfies” or “ussies”, are taken in multitude! And Shannon is so thoughtful as to having copies of the best photos made and given out to her friends. My sister-inlaw Cindy has to be the queen of memory-keeping. While visiting with her at her home in Waco, she showed me how to put together a simple scrapbook which she had done for each of three children. Focusing on one school year at a time, and highlighting sports and other extra-curricular activities,

she inspired me to simplify my scrapbook dreams in order to finally complete some albums for my two boys.

Milestones

Did you have something monumental happen in your life in 2017? I’m sure you took photos! Weddings, births, a new pet, the first day of school, graduation… These accomplishments will never be forgotten. And of course, we love to share them all on

confess, I finally printed the ones taken for our eldest son who graduated in 2015. There are so many places to get your photos printed. I have always relied on our local printers at Korczynski Photo Lab and Studio for all my snapshots throughout the years because the print quality is exceptional. But get those favorite photos in print, even if it’s done on your printer at home. They may just sit hidden in a digital hard drive forever if you don’t.

social media. But settings with an experienced photographer will really capture the moments for posterity. (Side comment: I’ve always been enthralled by the vintage photography of my ancestors. Why didn’t anyone smile in those photos? You can Google that.) So, as a parent of a high school senior, we had some creative photography done by the very talented Dayna Bouchard. After immediately sharing them on Facebook and Instagram, I purchased the digital files and printed my favorites to display at our home and office. And, I

Our Texas crossroads experienced A LOT this past year! One morning in August we awoke to see our communities ravaged by Hurricane Harvey and then in December we were enveloped with a blanket of gentle white snow! Pictures from each of these natural occurrences flooded social media. What a perfect representation of the cards that Mother Nature can play. And what a perfect opportunity to compile your own favorite photos of these historic events. Print them and place them in a special album that is easy to share. You and your loved ones will appreciate looking through the memories for years to come!

There

is a story behind each and every photo. Since we are already taking our cameras wherever we go, we are creating a visual diary of our life’s events. Don’t let the memories be a fleeting glimpse. Memorialize them in print! Photos are meant to be shared. They can warm your heart or bring a tear to your eye. Because tears dry and memories fade, you can secure those special times in your photos. That is my goal for 2018. Could it be yours, too?

It’s that time again! Time for New Year’s Resolutions. Even if you’re not making some this year, chances are, you have at some point in your life. Chances are, you’ve probably also broken a few, too. The

truth is, failure to keep some resolves may not be life altering—like skipping grocery shopping to eat out or missing a day of workouts. But there are some that matter too much to give up on.

The apostle Paul talked

about this in Philippians 3:14 when he claimed, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” For some things— like life, our callings, or our God-ordained relationships— giving up should not be an option. Instead, we must press on, continuing to do the right things, even the hard things, until what God has dreamt for our lives becomes a reality.

Not

long ago, I heard a story about Ted Koppel, who anchored ABC’s Nightline for nearly 25 years before he laid down his broadcast journalism career for retirement. His story was anything but easy. parents were both German-Jewish refugees who fled to Ameri-

Koppel’s

to cover the Vietnam war and presenting the Saturday Night News, but still, his dream felt lifeless.

Since

Twenty-five years after he came to America, Koppel finally found the break he was looking for. He presented the program on television during the 1979 Iran hostage crisis, and he was an instant hit. The program ran for twentyfive more years with Koppel as its lead anchor.

he was young, Koppel had a dream to become a television journalist. He attended college at both Syracuse University and Stanford University. He worked harder than most, keeping his goal always before his eyes. Sometimes, he would get turned down because of his thick German accent, so he worked overtime to try and lose it.

after

graduation, the let-downs continued. Koppel applied for job after job, each time getting turned away. In fact, he and his wife received so many rejection letters, they decided to save them for wallpaper for their first dining room! It became built-in motivation to succeed.

finally,

Koppel got his first job, but it wasn’t in television as he had always dreamt. It was in radio. There, he experienced small victories, like being hired

that is, until Nightline.

AS

we approach this new year, I want to ask you: what dream has God put in your heart? I encourage you to take both the Apostle Paul’s and Ted Koppel’s leading and don’t give up. Press on toward the life God has for you!

When God makes a promise, He always comes through. As Paul encourages, pressing on toward the goal is what brings us the prize. So this year, let’s not give up prematurely. Let’s stand up and live bravely in pursuit of our promise!
