With several new galleries opening up over the past year, the scene remains vibrant and regularly makes lists touting the best art scenes in the nation. This town draws 2 million visitors each annum, and art remains one of our anchor attractions. Local galleries entice with art “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” — Pablo Picasso

Shake off the dust of the workaday world and visit Fredericksburg’s art galleries. Over the last 20 years, the Hill Country has become an art destination, with Boerne, Kerrville and other surrounding cities offering a wide variety of galleries that show everything from fine art to modern art. Currently, 11 of Fredericksburg’s galleries are members of First Friday Art Walk, which brings together art lovers and artists. Residents and visitors alike participate in the community event. “Each gallery does its own advertising but collaborates on the first Friday of the month to enjoy art,” said Catherine Franz, co-owner of Cate Zane. The monthly art walk is a free self-guided tour,

and many galleries stay open for extended hours, usually from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. When evening comes, enjoy hors d’oeuvres, award-winning Texas wine and live demonstrations by artists at many venues. First Friday Art Walk is busiest in the spring and fall, when the weather is pleasant and art patrons can take their time, strolling from gallery to gallery. In December, when the art walk falls the same night as the annual Christmas parade, not all galleries participate. Open “when I’m here or by appointment” Fredericksburg Trade Days co-owner Alan Wilcox has opened his own working studio and gallery in town. His artist statement reads, “I am just Alan, and I like to paint.” Wilcox took up painting seven years ago. He has also worked in sculpture, and his mother is an accomplished artist. “I grew up thinking everybody did art,” he said. After a heart attack, he turned back to painting. “The paintings overtook our living room,” he said. Now those paintings are spread throughout a house built in 1941 that previously operated as a coffee shop. “The whole property is just so peaceful. It has this wonderful karma that’s hard to explain,” Wilcox said. One room of the house is his studio, and in it

hang paintings by John Austin Hanna, Becky Joy, Doug Prine and Jason Rich to serve as inspiration and “lessons,” Wilcox said. “This room is an art-lover’s dream. It’s the perfect place to paint,” he said. Wilcox plans to sculpt again in the space as well. The house includes an extensive deck beside Barons Creek, and the first thing he remodeled on the property was the tall cross out back. Wilcox plans to hold events outside, maybe even miniature art shows with a few artists doing demonstrations. For First Friday Art Walk, he plans to stay open until 8 p.m. and collaborate with his wife, Rhonda, who started Fredericksburg Trade Days. “My wife is a great hostess. She knows how to entertain 11,000 people in a weekend,” Wilcox said.

Owner Patricia Karr defined fine craft as “handmade work of various media, but it’s the highest level of quality,” she said. “When people think of art, they think of painting. But fine craft is another category of art.” The gallery includes paintings, ceramics, fine furnishings, wood turnings, sculpture, jewelry, mosaics, glass and kinetic outdoor art. The art may be decorative or functional. Karr and her husband have been collecting art for more than 25 years and try to replicate the

friendly atmosphere they have enjoyed in other galleries. Behind every piece of art at Artisans is a talented, experienced, hardworking artist that has a unique story to tell through their creations. “Our big thing is supporting local artists here. Everybody’s from Texas,” she said. It’s important to Karr to carry art in a wide price range, appealing to both the first-time art buyer and the collector. Artisans Gallery participates in First Friday Art Walk, remaining open until 8 p.m. on those evenings, and prides itself on what Karr called its “Texas-friendly atmosphere.”

Open Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 12-5 p.m. or by appointment Located in the heart of downtown Boerne, Carriage House Gallery is housed inside a stone cottage, shaded by burgundy awnings and accented by window boxes with bright flowers and greenery. The artist-owned gallery, founded in 2003, has 13 professional artists and features fine art in a variety of media, including painting, photography, scratchboard art, sculpture, fused glass, bas relief and encaustics. The work encompasses a variety of

styles and subjects. In 2017, readers of “The Boerne Star” voted the gallery “Best of the Best.” The gallery’s artists participate in events sponsored by Boerne Professional Artists, including the Parade of Artists in the spring and the Texas Hill Country Fall Fine Art Show. On the second Saturday of each month the gallery hosts a featured artist for Boerne’s Second Saturday Art Beat from 4-8 p.m.

Open Tuesday through Sunday at 10 a.m. (closing hours vary by season) and by appointment. Cate Zane offers a mix of the traditional and the contemporary, focusing on fine things from the 19th and 20th centuries. It also offers antiques, “works of art that you can put in your home, and they’re functional,” said coowner Catherine Franz. Cate Zane carries artisan jewelry as well. “All the jewelry we offer is carefully chosen to reflect the person behind the work,” Franz said, citing silversmith Janet Martinez from Colorado and local coin artist, Gabriel Acevedo.

The gallery has been open for three years. Its artists include Nina Cobb Walker, Cynthia H. Labuda and C.S. Tally, whose artistic relationship with nearby Enchanted Rock spans more than 40 years. Cate Zane’s interest in historic Western art is evolving, offering estate art as it becomes available, beginning with the estate of Roy Lee Ward, named Texas State Artist in 1995. The gallery coordinates First Friday Art Walk and stays open on those evenings until 8 p.m.

Open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Dan Pfeiffer’s modern art gallery has been open since 2013, but it only added the wine bar last year. “I don’t have any Texas wine. We have beautifully balanced wines from around the world,” Pfeiffer said, and that includes selections from Argentina, France, Italy, Portugal and New Zealand. Located in an 1890s butcher shop, the building required extensive renovation, including six tons of concrete, to level the sloped floor. The gallery is a marriage of old and new — antique ceiling beams paired with contemporary glass windows overlooking an outdoor sculpture garden. Every

Saturday the gallery welcomes live music to the patio. Pfeiffer’s own work in the gallery includes bowl turning, furniture, found object art and sculpture. “I make most everything here. Sometimes they call me an artist,” Pfeiffer said. His work stems from his love of the outdoors, cultivated while growing up on a South Texas ranch. The gallery also includes art from Texas, Arizona, Florida and New Mexico by artists such as René Alvarado, Hilario Gutierrez and Debra Fritts.

Die Künstler von Fredericksburg 607 North Milam Street www.diekunstler.com Die Künstler von Fredericksburg means “The Artists of Fredericksburg,” and this art group, founded in 1993, now includes about 100 art enthusiasts. The group’s purpose is to promote art appreciation and education in Fredericksburg and the Hill Country. Although Die Künstler does not have its own gallery space, artwork by its members can be found at local galleries, wineries and

theaters. Members meet at 6:30 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month at the Hill Country University Center, where professional artists give demonstrations in media that include watercolor, oils, pastel and pen and ink drawing. Each November, Die Künstler holds an art show featuring approximately 300 original works, and 

Open Monday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and by appointment In 2017, Fredericksburg Art Gallery moved to a new location in the Kiehne Herrmann Home — still on Main Street but away from the heavy foot traffic. “We love the historical building. It’s coming up on 170 years old. It’s the oldest two-story structure in Fredericksburg. It’s art in itself,” said owner Clayton Sammons. “It gives us a good chance for traffic coming from out of town to see the sign. The gallery’s more of a destination.” Fredericksburg Art Gallery features Texas regional art, especially from the Hill Country. It specializes in representational wildlife, Western, still life, portraiture and landscape. The gallery hosts an annual Contemporary Masters Invitational Show, at which 10 artists bring their three best works, and visitors judge. “We have just over 30 artists: one-third are in town, one-third out of state and the rest in Texas,” Sammons said. “We do have a few artists who are

known and accomplished. Some are building their way up. It’s definitely top quality, but also some affordable work, along with once-in-a-lifetime purchase as well.” A new addition is John Seerey-Lester, an internationally acclaimed artist whose original work is in the White House and who wanted representation in Texas. Sammons also displays a few of his own paintings, and several of his pieces are featured in galleries out of state. In a separate building behind the gallery, Fredericksburg Art Gallery offers museum-quality custom framing. “We can frame it all, and we do installation as well,” Sammons said. The space behind the gallery backs up to Barons Creek, a prime spot for special events and First Friday Art Walk. Fredericksburg Art Gallery remains open until 8 p.m. for the art walk.

Open Thursday through Monday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The sign outside Fredericksburg Art Guild & Gallery reads, “Welcome to the Best Little Art Gallery in Town.” The guild is a nonprofit organization founded more than 40 years ago by artist John McClusky. All the members are Texas artists. The guild also does cross-promotions with arts organizations in Boerne and Comfort. “In our minds, the guild and the gallery are so meshed together, there’s no difference,” said Nan Henke, one of the guild’s members and a frequent teacher of watercolor. “Our purpose is to support arts in the Hill Country.” Currently, the guild has 23 members and five associates. Members not only have their art displayed but also serve as docents. Art shows rotate

between the members, with each artist having a chance to host a show every year and a half or so. For a slightly higher membership fee, artists can rent a corner of the studio, providing more space to display their art. A children’s art show takes place twice a year. “Their art is displayed at the same level we show our work, so they come to a First Friday Art Walk reception, and we give them the full experience,” Henke said. In May, the guild hosts a juried art show. For First Friday Art Walk, the gallery stays open until 8 p.m., and the featured artist is usually on-site, doing a demonstration or talking about their work.

Fredericksburg Artists’ School 812 North Llano Street, Suite A 830-997-0515 www.fbgartschool.com One reason Fredericksburg’s art community has grown robustly is due to Fredericksburg Artists’ School. Bill and Nancy Bush bring professional artists to Fredericksburg to instruct and encourage artists. “Painting is really problem-solving,” said Bill Bush. “People want to take from these particular artists, and Fredericksburg is a desired destination.” Students, who come from around the country for

workshops, learn to solve problems in their painting, whether they are beginners or master artists. Nancy Bush, a Master Signature Member of the American Impressionist Society, who shows in galleries around the country, teaches two classes a year for the artists’ school. Bush is not an artist — he’s a CPA. More than 20 years ago, on the way home from attending an art school in Santa Fe, his wife, Nancy, turned to him

and said that they needed to start an art school. Which meant Bill needed to start an art school. “She made a deal that whatever did not involve putting paint on a canvas, I do,” he said. Nancy invited artists she knew to teach, and it grew from there. “We wanted to be known nationally” Bush said,

and with nationally and internationally known 17 instructors, that goal has been accomplished. Most classes are held in the conference room of the Inn on Barons Creek, and the school also hosts plein air field trips. Some workshops are offered off-site and even out of state. Its collection of Hill Country and international artists has a contemporary flair. “We have a real strong international connection right now, especially with Russia,” said owner Mary Katherine Finkel. “A lot of people comment on the variety, the different mediums.” The gallery had a contract with Julia Klimova, who works in oils, before she became well-known. Klimova, who lives in Canada, has attended two events at The Good Art Company in recent years. Other prominent artists include Musetta Aponte, from Italy, and Lee Casbeer, from Johnson City, who has also painted several murals around Fred-

ericksburg. Finkel was raised in the gallery industry and after splitting time between Fredericksburg and Houston, decided to put down roots here with her husband. “We felt this was a great town to be part of, in the art community,” she said. The gallery is located in the historic Schmidt-Dietz building, which has also been a hotel, a lawyer’s office and a saloon. The Good Art Company also has an online gallery and store in an effort to better promote its artists and help mainstream customers discover good art.

Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In January, Koch Gallery moved down the street to a spot right in the heart of Fredericksburg’s art galleries. “We will be expanding to include Southwestern art and fine craft,” said owner Bert Koch. The gallery will continue to carry Native American jewelry, pottery, rugs and bronze sculpture along with artwork. Koch’s collection, more than 30 years in the making, includes vintage Native American art from the 1920s to 1970s. “These artists made huge contributions to the art world during their lifetime,” he said. Often Koch will be contacted by someone who discovers a collection of Native American artwork left behind by a loved one.

“I’ve been using several books of well-recognized artists that I wanted to add to my collection for my gallery,” he said, including Harrison Begay, Anthony Da, Helen Hardin, Julian Martinez and Quincy Tahoma. Works by all these artists are now in Koch Gallery. “These are highly collectible pieces by Native American artists that are really hard to find,” Koch said. The new location will be open more days of the week and will also offer custom framing by Lee Ann Whatley, formerly of Eleven Squared. As an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers, Whatley will also offer appraisals. Koch Gallery stays open until 8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk.

The gallery includes art by G. Harvey, including some of his sculpture, as well as art by Vives Atsara, Julian Onderdonk and Robert Wood. The new location, in a midcentury building, is around the corner from the old one, just a block off Main Street. “It has pretty rafters, old wood, lots of windows and light,” said co-owner Jeannie Jackson. “The space is also suited for antiques from various ages — silver, crystal and accessories.” Jackson’s husband and co-owner, Larry, has a background in architecture and antiques, and he

is a leading expert on John Henry Belter furniture. Jeannie has a degree in art and art history. “We make a pretty good combo,” she said. The gallery specializes in helping homeowners, first-time and long-time, select art, antique furniture and accessories that enhance a home. “What I’m trying to do is fairly timeless,” Jackson said. “We’re getting a little more straight lines in our midcentury antiques for newer homes. We’re showing homeowners who want to know how you work in these antiques that are lighter in color, lighter in feel. Accessories bring it up into this century.” The gallery is one of the founding members of First Friday Art Walk and stays open until 8 p.m. on those evenings.

Open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. In 2017, RS Hanna Gallery expanded and is now in two locations. The original, in a Sunday House built in the late 1800s, now showcases national

nonprofit fine arts groups and juried shows, including National Oil and Acrylic Painters Society and Women Artists of the West.

“I do think it’s worked out for us to be lucky enough to host the nonprofits here,” said owner Shannon Hanna, who has been part of Fredericksburg’s art world since 1998. “They do their own advertising in national magazines. They invite the artists, and they jury in.” At the same time, Hanna is happy to also have a new location in the historic Hoerster building. “We couldn’t pass up being on Main Street, couldn’t pass up the opportunity to have more eyes on our year-round gallery artists,” she said. John Bennett and Robert Johnson, both formerly at Whistle Pik Galleries,, are now at RS Hanna. The gallery caters to artists’ artists who are loved by collectors and art publications and who are

winners of prestigious art shows, including 19 John Austin Hanna, Maryneil Dance, Stevie Jo Lake and Rex White. Both RS Hanna locations are featuring more artist demonstrations during First Friday Art Walk — sometimes continuing those events into Saturday. Sometimes the gallery also brings in a musician to enhance the overall experience. “We’re trying to make art a happening as well. To see someone create something in front of your eyes, to see the creative process, that’s exciting,” Hanna said. “There’s more for everybody to enjoy.” Both of the gallery’s locations are open until 8 p.m. for First Friday Art Walk.

Open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment Mike and Debbie Wilson own River’s Edge gallery, which also offers framing, large-scale scanning and printing. “We’re the best-kept secret in Kerrville because most of our clients are from out of town,” Debbie Wilson said. The gallery has a friendly, laid-back feel, with gallery dogs (all rescues) resting in their appointed spots. “I’m not trying to be an upper-end gallery. I want to be a middle-class gallery, where they walk in and the artwork is affordable. They start collecting here, and they purchase a piece and come back yearly on vacations. I broaden their horizons

by giving them guides and sending them to other galleries,” Wilson said. The 20,000-square-foot space currently has about 30 artists, including painters, sculptors and jewelry-makers along with estate art. River’s Edge hosts periodic art shows that are more of a party than a stuffy affair. “Sometimes we have rock concerts in here. Next year we will have a wedding here,” Wilson said. River’s Edge specializes in conservation of family heirlooms, priceless art and vintage photographs. “We have the knowledge of preserving it for the next 100 years,” she said.

Both are owned by Beth McLaughlin, who describes herself as a serial entrepreneur. “Art is more of a personal passion,” she said. “I’ve always been a collector myself.” The gallery represents both up-and-coming artists as well as known ones who show original pieces of art in a variety of media, including oils, acrylic and pastel. Much of the art leans toward the contemporary. “Our mission is to support artists by giving them

Many of the artists are from Texas, but McLaughlin has found others in her international travels. “I’m always on the hunt for exceptional talent to bring back,” she said. The newly expanded “gift gallery and laboratory” sells comestibles, fragrances, skin care, candles and more — all handmade on-site by Varney using the homegrown herbs he’s been known for since 1985. Varney founded Fredericksburg Herb Farm and is the author of the award-winning book “Herbs.”

He’s been featured on the Food Network for his knowledge and love of all things botanical. Varney purchased the property from the original settling family, back before it was in the city limits. Now the herbal oasis is urban, and Varney says visitors seek him out. He’s not a visual artist himself but described himself as an “artist with food and with my products.” During First Friday Art Walk, Varney, a former restaurateur, goes all out with themed bites and sips. The gallery is open until 8 p.m. for art walk.

Then I got interested in photography,” Weigand said. Photography — of landscapes, bridals and, for a while, weddings — became her focus in 2001. In 2015, she was awarded an International Master of Photography degree by the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). The PPA is the oldest and largest photography association in the United States. Although Weigand is relatively new to oil paint-

ing, she works from a studio in her home or in plein air. She also participates in art shows, some as a member of Die Künstler, where she has served as a board member. Weigand is drawn to all things Western, from Native American tipis to Hill Country landscapes and especially to wild horses. She’s been involved with filmmaker Ginger Kathrens and The Cloud Foundation, which is committed to preserving wild horses on public lands. Weigand donates part of the proceeds from her wild horse photos, taken in Wyoming and Montana since 2004, to The Cloud Foundation.

Follow the dragonfly The logo for River’s Edge is a colorful dragonfly, and the colorful gallery, framing and printing shop sits beside the Guadalupe River. When asked why she opened the gallery, co-owner Debbie Wilson joked, “Crazy,” then added, “I love art.” Over the 15 years of operation, Wilson says the market has changed. Customers wants fewer bluebonnets, more contemporary art. Her husband and gallery co-owner, Mike, is happy to oblige. He’s a selftaught artist whose series of “Vigilantes” paintings is highly collectible He described the four-year-old series as “relying on the family to get through the hard spots.” “Most people try to paint what makes you happy: day on the beach, turkey dinner. But these mean more than passing scenery. They touch you in a way,” he said. “Some people think they’re creepy, but that’s cool too.” Mike also paints landscapes — even bluebonnets sometimes. He’s working on a new series about the human body. His work fits right into the type of art that customers want. “It’s the weird stuff that’s selling,” Debbie said. “That’s what I love about art — you never can tell what’s going to sell. Taste changes over time. You never know who will walk through the door.” Other featured artists at River’s Edge include James Snuffer’s pop art, landscapes by Larry Dyke, and David Phelps, who created “Nancy,” the 12-foot bronze sculpture just laying around, waiting for another visitor to

photograph her. In addition to the gallery, River’s Edge restores old paintings, such as the one that was stained completely black from nicotine. The process to clean old works of art and guarantee their beauty for the next century requires time and skill.

“You have to know when to stop, to make sure it’s not the paint coming off,” Debbie said. River’s Edge also offers framing — not only of paintings but also of things like vintage beaded purses, even Mardi Gras masks. “By the time we’re done, it’ll look like a million bucks,” Debbie said. She specializes in shadow boxes using museum-grade glass. “We use glass that looks like there’s no glass there,” she said. “I always try to find a texture or a design to use and bring it out in framing, especially the shadow boxes. Set it off with a filet.” Debbie’s favorite part of her job is the stories she hears as customers bring in heirlooms that are important to them and entrust River’s Edge to preserve them. “We try to save our customers as much money as possible but give them the art they deserve,” Debbie said.

A Family Tradition

The Artworks of Ben B. Beckendorf, Texas Bluesman

t’s a tossup which blues Ben B. Beckendorf is better known for, his music or his art. He’s written over 1,000 blues songs, and his colorful art — which does contain the color blue — is about real life: breakfast foods, Texas cactus, blooms in a Mason jar, grapes on a vine, a vintage airplane from the Hangar Hotel. Beckendorf was not born in Fredericksburg, but his family moved to land not far from town in 1965. He’s lived here long enough to see Main Street change from a sleepy street to a tourist destination. His father, Charles Beckendorf, was a noted artist who used to have a gallery in town (it’s since been moved online). Just

by growing up, Beckendorf learned from a master. “I grew up around him doing stuff and was just amazed at what he could do. It was fascinating, the projects he’d work on,” Beckendorf said. “The things my father could do with a piece of paper and a pencil totally fascinated me.” Beckendorf, who plays more than 250 gigs a year, also learned music from his father. “I’ve been playing guitar since about 8 or 9 years old,” he said. “My father was a wonderful singer, too. He introduced me to the crooners, Frank Sinatra, and I love that stuff.”

Beckendorf has a series of paintings of blues artists as well as bluesy musical instruments, including guitars and saxophones. For Beckendorf, art and music are inseparable. “I’ve been doing it all my life, both of them,” he said. “Seems like whenever I’m not doing music, I’m doing art. It fills my void when I have a void. Both of them are expressions of me.” He’s not always sure why people like what they do in a particular piece of art. “It’s something that just sparks something,” he said. “I view art totally neutral.” He does know many people are drawn to things from their childhood, and he paints a lot of vintage items, especially cars and motorcycles. Another commonality is old things: old fans, old phones, old cars, old toasters, old coffee percolators. Also old Fredericksburg, including Luckenbach. “I love doing the little places around here,” he said. “It’s interesting architecture.” Beckendorf’s art has been at URBANHerbal for about six months, and his family has known the owner, Bill Varney, for several

years. 41 “He’s got it down to an art,” Beckendorf said of Varney’s gallery, adding that he likes “the home-ness” of it. In November, Beckendorf did a twonight concert and art show at the gallery, complete with hors d’oeuvres, sangria and beer. All his art is full of color, including blue. “I like to bring color into anything. Even the small pieces are full of color. They put a little color on your wall,” he said. “Every artist has a different feel, and sometimes I’ll start with a general idea, but I’ll finish it totally different because I feel totally different.” Beckendorf primarily works in acrylics, but he also uses watercolor and colored pencil. “I’ll put watercolor down first then do all the detailing with colored pencil to sharpen it up,” he said, a technique he learned from his father. When Beckendorf goes in the art studio, “it draws me in there, and once I start, then I can’t leave for a while. That’s the way it happens with me, and my father used to do that, too — work on a painting till 3 in the morning. It gets you hooked into it, and you can’t leave until it’s done.”
