MEET THE COVER PHOTO COUPLE ...Casey & Nick

Nick and I met on the first day of my summer internship at a construction company. When we were introduced and shook hands it felt like I had been struck by lightning. I knew at that moment, Nick was someone I wanted to know better. On the second day of my internship, Nick had been given tickets to an Astros game later that week, and he invited me. While we were at the game, we met the mascot, Orbit, almost got

I, of course, invited Nick! The second Astros game was not as good as the first one, but we still enjoyed each other’s company. During the next few days we learned that we would be working on the same proj-

ect for the duration of my internship. I happily looked forward to work every day. Throughout the summer we would find an excuse to hang out together on the weekends. During the workweek, we started walking the jobsite together every afternoon. It became the best part of my work days. I definitely had a crush on Nick, and I could tell that he liked me too, but we never talked about it.

ENGAGEMENT STORY

S

Smijai contacted me a few weeks ago to start planning his secret proposal to Sheena. He knew that he wanted Wildseed Farms in Fredericksburg, Texas, to be the spot where he asked Sheena to marry him because of how beautiful the wildflowers are this time of year. Plus, they have a butterfly garden, and he said that Sheena loves butterflies. I got there

early to decorate the proposal scene with flowers and mason jars that had photos of Smijai and Sheena that he had put together beforehand. Sheena was so surprised when she walked up to the bench and saw their photos displayed. Smijai was smiling so big when he pulled out the ring and got down on one

Snow in the Hill Country It may have arrived a little too early for Christmas, but how did you enjoy the snowfall on Dec. 7th? Did you get some wonderful engagement or wedding pictures? Any of you really get crazy and make some snow angels or snowmen? This was also a great opportunity for all the love birds, young and old, to bundle up and take a slow walk through the park, around the block, or in the yard and enjoy Mother Nature at her winter’s best and if you managed to take some beautiful pictures during the stroll, all the better. If you didn’t, it might be a while before you get another chance - around Boerne, at least. The last real snowfall in Boerne, besides some very light dustings, was in 1987 and that was just over an inch. An uncommon event like this one is and will be a way to mark the passage of time with your other half and the memorable happenings that you shared together. Perhaps after our next real snowfall in 20 or 30 years, some of you will be able to show your children the December 7th pictures you took and tell stories of the snowfall that wasn’t supposed to happen – at least according to the weatherman.

The Sky is Falling Wedding Insurance

Okay not really, but for any bride, when things go wrong on wedding day or leading up to wedding day, it may feel like the sky is actually falling. No matter how diligent you are, or reputable your vendors promise to be, wedding mishaps happen. This could lead to financial loss for you. But wait! Wedding insurance? Whaaattt? Never heard of such a thing? Yes, it exists. The thought of dealing with insurance companies is about as fun as eating a handful of bumble bees. Below is a dumbed down explanation for those who cringe when they hear the word insurance. {There are two main types of wedding insurance} Wedding Liability Insurance: Wedding liability insurance protects you in the event of

10

WINTER 2017

injuries or property damage; …the bad stuff no one wants to think about, but it happens. It protects against alcohol-related accidents, and venue damages caused by guests/party. Candle sets fire, vendor went out of business, guests get food poisoning, elderly guest gets knocked over and breaks both hips… a single liability policy will cover your rehearsal, rehearsal dinner, wedding ceremony and reception. It is required by most venues these days, and it is very affordable. Bonus, it can be purchased up to the actual day of the wedding. Wedding Cancellation Insurance: Cancellation insurance covers military leave, severe weather keeping guests from attending wedding (hurricane, snow, ice, tornado…), sudden illness, vendor bank-

ruptcy, damage to event location prior to wedding, loss or damage to bridal gown, and even professional counseling following a cancellation or postponement. Reimbursement is available for your financial losses or expenses if you are forced to postpone or cancel your wedding. Obviously, there are exclusions and things insurance does not cover. Cold feet, or a change of heart are not covered by wedding insurance. ALL your vendors should have insurance, and it should be one of the first questions you ask them, but their insurance is not going to extend to the host of the event (you). A wedding insurance liability policy covers the host (you). There are financial consequences resulting from unexpected situations such as the reasons listed above, if something does go wrong, costs can add

up quickly. With wedding insurance, your financial investment and dream wedding can be protected. Even if your homeowners insurance provides coverage for events, filing a claim could increase your rates or result in termination of your policy. Primary coverage pays out first! You can choose the level of coverage based on your total wedding budget, consider how much you will spend on your venue, wedding gown, flowers, photographers, and other items. This is the investment you would stand to lose if you were forced to cancel or reschedule your wedding. Policy’s start around $100.

Heat Things Up Behind the Bar

You may want to forego the tropical frozen drinks, but the winter replacements are even better! Create a make-your-own-hotchocolate bar, filled with all kinds of mixins — like candy canes, cinnamon sticks, marshmallows, and chocolate chips — and top it off with flavored alcohol that’ll enhance the taste, like RumChata and Pinnacle Salted Caramel. You can also serve mulled apple cider, hot toddies, and spiked coffee drinks.

so they had to act quickly. They promptly went to work and transformed the property with hours of landscaping, cleaning, polishing, and prepping. “We’re not done yet,” says Loretta, “We’ll constantly be evolving. You may think it’s all about money. It’s not. You may think it’s about how big the DJ company is or how fancy their equipment is. It’s not. It’s all about how much a DJ company cares about you. In other words, it’s all about an attitude that puts you first.

We put you first. Yes, our equipment is state-of-the-art. But our company isn’t the biggest in San Antonio … nor the smallest. We’re somewhere in between. You’ll quickly see that we love what we do. And we take care of you. That is why we were rated #1 among San Antonio brides. One way we take care of you is with a pre-planning meeting. We’ll create an entertainment plan built around your tastes. There will be no surprises.

Another surprising and happy benefit to our brides is that we provide FREE, you heard that right, FREE, cocktail and dinner hour music at your wedding reception. A Helpful Guide to Tipping at Weddings Which vendors should you tip and how much and when should you? Tips are never obligatory and they are supposed to be an expression of appreciation for a good service that you receive. That said, unless the service was terrible, would you walk away from a salon or restaurant without leaving one? The same applies to weddings and it is customary to show gratitude by tipping the people involved in making your wedding a success. #1 Check your contract – many gratuities are built into the price quotes for major items like catering. If the gratuity is not included in the contract, you might consider adding it into the contract so you don’t have to deal with it on the day of the ceremony. #2 Reward Extraordinary Efforts When someone goes out of their way to make your event special, you may want to add on a little extra for them. Did the baker make last minute changes you requested for the cake? Did your bartender make sure you had a drink in hand at all times and was fast and professional while accommodating your wedding guests? Did you spend hours with your planner? Setting aside money for tipping can be hard when you are trying to squeeze everything into the wedding budget. Although it is not required nor expected, a small gratuity for a job well done is a great way to show appreciation to everyone who made your wedding day run smooth. Key people that should not be forgotten when tipping include: • Bartenders • Catering – if not included in the bill • Delivery or setup personnel Here are some guidelines to help you: Bartenders: 10 percent of the total liquor bill (to be split among them) Catering manager: $200+ or a personal gift Hairstylist: 15 to 20 percent Limo or bus drivers: 15 percent Maitre d’hotel or headwaiter: 1 to 3 percent of food and beverage fees Makeup artist: 15 to 20 percent Musicians: 15 percent of fee for ceremony musicians; $25 to $50 per musician for reception Photographer/videographer: If you’re paying a flat fee with no overtime, $100 Waiters: $20 and up each (distributed by the catering manager or maitre d’) Wedding planner: 15 percent of fee or a personal gift

Picking a DJ

A

By: John at DJ for Hire

As a DJ, one of the most frequent questions I get asked is “Can you make any suggestions when it comes to music for the ceremony?” The range of songs include Cannon in D Major by Johann Pachelbel to the Wedding March by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. When I meet with a couple, I tell them that tradition is a foundation but it’s your special day. I have played many different types of music that was picked out by the bride and groom. I have played rock music with a classical twist, pop music such as A Thousand Years (an instrumental) to country slow music as the bride walks down the aisle. I encourage couples to choose a song that has special significance to them or a song or melody that reminds them how they met. I am often asked; What songs are played during the ceremony, how does a ceremony work? There are a few ways to play your special songs during the ceremony. Here are a few suggestions I offer to my customers. The typical three song ceremony would go like this. The first song is played during the entrance of the groom, groomsmen, preacher, and the bridesmaids. The second song is played as the bride comes down the aisle and the last song is when the preacher says, “I now want to introduce Mr. and Mrs.”

candle ceremony is something special in between the vows. I have played music in the background when the bride and groom are lighting candles to show their unity. I have also continued on page 40

Another way you can have your ceremony music is to have five songs. The first song is played as the preacher, groom and groomsmen enter. The second song during the bridesmaids entrance. The third song for the bridal walk, the fourth song during a candle ceremony or sandbox ceremony, and the last song is played when the preacher announces, “I now present Mr. and Mrs.” I have also seen where one song was for the preacher, one for the groom and groomsmen, one for the bridesmaids, one for the flower girl, one for the bride, and then the last song. So, what is the sandbox or candle ceremony? The sand box or

hair

We are still seeing a lot of one dimensional hair colors in every shade. If you still have your highlights, I’m sure your stylist has suggested that you should have them toned down. You can still have that lighter dimension on the ends, just not the rest of it! It’s really time to let those highlights go by the wayside. My fave new trend, whether it’s a low hair knot or two horn knots on the top of your head, is the greatest and it’s cute cute cute! Love seeing makeup again! Little pips of gold and silver are coming out everywhere and the peach hues are still in. I’m for the full effect. Whether it’s your lips, eyes, lids or even all three, it is really a refreshing look for those cold winter months. Last but not least, we are keeping the smoky eye around and adding nice pops of color in the middle for a twist, and I’m definitely feeling it.

clothing

Leggings and a black textured boot is looking really cute for winter. The thick chunky turtle neck is in; however, it makes me a little claustrophobic. I’m not sure it will be cold enough in Texas for all of that material around my neck, eek! However, I did see a few really cute bandana chokers. Maybe I can pull that off instead of a turtle neck. Oversized sleeves are in! I’m just not real sure how well you can function with fabric drooping down over your palm. Bu whatever works for you, pick one and run with it. WINTER WEDDING FLORAL TIPS

H

How does floral décor rank on your list of must-haves for your wedding or event? Here are our tips for keeping you on top of your floral decisions this winter. Be picky about your florist. Choosing your florist wisely can have a large impact on both your budget and the overall feel of your event. Your florist will help you pick flowers that are in season, in style, and in your budget! Ask to see your florist’s portfolio. Check out some of their work from previous events in the same season or location so you can figure out if they will be able to achieve the look you’re going for.

Think outside the flower box. Incorporate some non-floral elements in your bouquets, such as white pepper berries, snowberries or hypericum. This will add dimension and individuality to your flowers. Mix touches of sage and lamb’s ear to get the frosty effect that reflects the season. Consider monochromatic aesthetics. Although there is no shortage of gorgeous possibilities to reflect the season, very simple looks are trending this winter. All white weddings are quite popular this time of year. We’re seeing a lot of soft antique looks paired with very pale blush hues. If you want to stick to the season’s

notorious color of red, consider pairing it with a broad palette of colors such as plum, ruby and wine. This will add depth and richness to your package. Save money by choosing flowers in season. Winter wedding flowers include: Carnations, Evergreen, Holly Berry, Narcissus, Pansy, Rose, Amaryllis, Star of Bethlehem and Poinsettias. Don’t forget the personal touch!

sonalize your flower arrangements. Attaching a picture of the family members who couldn’t be with you on your special day is another way to add that extra sentimental and personal touch.

Family broaches or ribbons are great additions to per-

BEER AND WINE OR FULL BAR? By: Jennifer at Bartenders 4 You

W

What is more affordable serving Beer & Wine or Full Bar with Liquor? Full Bar of Course! Yes that is right let me explain why! It is easy math! Lets break it down for you. 1 Bottle of wine 750ml serves 4 (6) oz servings of wine the average bride spends $10.00 on a bottle. That is $2.50 per serving 1 Bottle of liquor 1.75L serves 39 servings of mixed cocktails the average bride spends $25.00 on a bottle of liquor. That is .64 Cents per serving. Even adding in your basic mixer you are still under $1.00 per serving.

Say you have 150 guests and 75 are wine drinkers and you are serving for 4 hours you will need 75 bottles of wine at $10.00 a bottle that is $750 just for wine alone.

We know some of you will go buy two buck chuck and say then wine is cheaper to serve. But lets face it, would you rather serve two buck chuck or a cape cod at your wedding?

Now you serve liquor to 75 guests for 4 hours you only need 8 Bottles of Liquor at $25.00 per bottle that is only $200, I know you are going to say what about all the sodas, juices, mixers, garnishes etc. You will still only spend about $250-$300 on that so you are now at $500 to serve liquor. You saved $250 dollars!

So call us today for your consult and let us show you how you can have the bar of you always wanted with out breaking the bank! **side not for the those that choose venues that allow the couple to purchase their own alcohol. Not In house catering**

Now of course there are variable and we used the average cost.

Cheers and Happy Planning!

Check out some exciting new trends (as it relates to food, of course) as well as some stand-by’s that are sticking around another year. First things first, BRUNCH! A daytime wedding or even brunch for dinner is becoming more popular, because who doesn’t love brunch?! Everything from Chicken and Waffles to “Brunch in a Box” and Cap’n Crunch French Toast will have your guests savoring every minute of your trendy day-time affair. Oh, and did I mention day-drinking? Make it especially fun with unconventional mimosas, like passionfruit, white cranberry, blackberry-mint, and a summertime fav, pineapple coconut. For the non-drinkers, this interactive bar with sparkling mineral water makes the perfect mocktail! But, don’t stop there! While Bloody Mary bars are still popular, switch it up a bit with a coffee cocktail bar that will energize your guests by combining booze with caffeine. Incorporate Cold Brew Coffee and you will really impress your guests! Creating a memorable guest experience is the goal when it comes to setting the trend! Interactive food stations are a fabulous and fun way to get your guests involved. We are loving Loaded French Fry and Tator Tot Bars in 2018 with accompaniments such as Smoked Sea Salt, Sriracha Ketchup, Fried Pork Belly, Caper Aioli, Yellow Curry Dust, and Gravy. Another favorite this year is the Ice-cream Sandwich Station with fresh baked cookies and wafers, along with house-made vanilla bean and espresso ice-cream rolled in sprinkles, chocolate shavings, or drizzled with caramel sauce. Fried Pies or “Hand Pies” are also huge for 2018! With fillings such as Medina Apple, Fredericksburg Peach, or Texas Pecanyour guests will surely be charmed with your Hill Country Hospitality!

Winter is my favorite season for a wedding. Since fewer weddings take place during these chilly months, yours will naturally stand out, and there are so many wonderful ways to eembrace mbrace the season! Here, check out five things you can only gget et away with at a winter wedding. Make it Snow Okay, so you can’t actually control the weather (and you probably wouldn’t want a snowstorm to hit on your wedding day anyway!). But you can make it “snow” as you walk down the aisle: Get Cozy While summer brides are busy worrying about how to sweatproof their makeup and how to avoid overheating in their ballgowns, you get to wrap yourself in a luxurious cape, wear a cute sweater over your dress, or skip the heels in favor of comfy boots under your dress. Heat Things Up Behind the Bar You may want to forego the tropical frozen drinks, but the winter replacements are even better! Create a make-yourown-hot-chocolate bar, filled with all kinds of add-ons — like candy canes, cinnamon sticks, marshmallows, and chocolate chips — and top it off with flavored alcohol that’ll enhance the taste, like RumChata and Pinnacle Salted Caramel. You can also serve mulled apple cider, hot toddies, and spiked coffee drinks. Expand Your Honeymoon Options It’s an unfortunate coincidence that peak wedding season (May-September) coincides with peak hurricane season, especially in the Caribbean. But the winter is the perfect time to make a tropical escape! Leave the snow and ice behind, and enjoy perfect beach weather every day on your romantic retreat. Or, take advantage of the snowy weather stateside and hit the slopes on your honeymoon. Score Free Décor Take advantage of the holiday season! If you plan your wedding near a big holiday — like Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s Eve, or Valentine’s Day — there’s a good chance your venue will already have some decorations in place. When meeting with your venue, ask when and how they decorate for the holidays so that you only have to worry about filling in the gaps (like centerpieces).

CRU VINTAGE A few years ago, my family attended a hill country wedding that was completely embellished with heirlooms. From church pews to farm tables adorned with mix and match china, it was truly a vintage affair. Even more, it was truly beautiful and I fell in love with it…so much that, before leaving this wedding, I knew I wanted to embark on this type of adventure! Thus evolved CRU Vintage Rentals (CRU means vintage, btw).

I grew up in a family of four girls who enjoyed antiquing, searching for fabulous vintage finds, creating works of art from them and decorating. Therefore, I knew this business would be a perfect fit for me because of my love for antiques along with my background in design and special attention to detail. As a result, CRU is able to assist with designing and decorating any event, based on specific styles and tastes, in addition to offering unique vintage rentals. THE OVERRATED REHEARSAL

I

If you are planning a wedding or recently planned your wedding, you know the stress of organizing a rehearsal. It can be overwhelming to plan for bridesmaids, ing ggroomsmen, roomsmen, family, grandparents, tthe he flower girl, the ring bearer and officiant to arrive on location a day before the wedding for the rehearsal. Many venues no longer allow for a rehearsal time and even more venues will not have rehearsal time available as popularity continues to grow for Friday and Sunday weddings which limits the available time. If your venue is unavailable the day before, consider doing a quick walk-through on the day of the wedding. The bridesmaids will already be on location to start working on hair and make-up and the groom and groomsmen can get a look at the layout of the venue and where they will need to stand. (The bride can hang back in the bridal suite to keep the tradition of not seeing her groom prior to walking down the aisle!) This allows the wedding planner to do a quick walk-through with all the participants just before the ceremony. This can all be done in 20 minutes, tops! Following the quick rehearsal, the gents can head off to do guy things and the ladies can head back inside to continue doing hair and make-up! Day-of-wedding rehearsals are a great option and are becoming more popular! Your bridal party will appreciate not needing to

By: Kristin Voss at Kendall Plantation take extra days off work or adding extra travel time! Here’s the deal, a rehearsal is SO overrated. As if you won’t have enough on your mind the day before the wedding anyway, you will also have an additional task of coordinating everyone in the wedding party to show up at an exact time the day before the wedding to practice walking in a line, quietly, like you did in 1st grade! Invariably, at least one person in the wedding party will be late or a no-show for any number of perfectly understandable reasons, so they will need to be briefed afterwards. The fact is, once you’ve hired a professional wedding planner to run the day, you don’t need to do a run-through the day before. The wedding planner is key here! Let me map it out for you. About 15 minutes or so prior to the ceremony on wedding day, the wedding planner will have everyone lined up in a specific order that was determined at your final meeting. Once everyone is in order, they simply follow the person in front of them to the altar. The wedding planner will direct when it is time to walk, where to walk, and when to stop. Yup, it is that easy! What about the 4-year-old flower girl you say? Well, she too, will walk behind a bridesmaid right before the bride comes down. They either do it or they don’t, it doesn’t matter how many times you practice or how much you bribe her to walk down the WINTER 2017

aisle, a 4-year-old will do what they do. Just go with it! Once the bridal party is down the aisle, obviously the bride already knows where she is headed and when to stop…yeah! Once everyone is in place and the music has faded, the officiant will take over from there. The officiant will guide the bride and groom as well as the guests on exactly what will happen next. The bridesmaids and groomsmen will have completed their duties and can stand on the sidelines as your ride-or-die. The officiant will be conducting the ceremony, so he/she will guide everyone when to talk and what to say. Even if the ceremony calls for personal vows, the officiant will cue the start of that. If there is a reader or singer during the ceremony, the officiant will signal for that, too! I would like to stress the importance of having a meeting with your officiant a week or two prior to the wedding so everyone is on the same page about the order events during the ceremony and that is it! Everyone has been to or been in a wedding before, it is all the same. Don’t stress about trying to round up a crowd to come a day or two early just to walk in a straight line. It will work out, it will be okay. Hire a professional wedding planner to take that stress away from you so you can just be a bride on your wedding day. You deserve it!

HIRING A DJ

Continued from Page 17 seen the couple mix sand together in a jar to show another way of bringing the family together. One special event I witnessed at a wedding went like this; on their wedding day, the bride and groom each wrote a note that wasn’t shared with each other or anyone else. During the ceremony, they placed the notes in a time capsule which they were to open five years later with the bottle of wine that was also locked inside the time capsule. Before the wedding ceremony, I have also played songs while the family is being seated and then I start into the special songs for the ceremony. Since most songs are about two to three minutes in length, ask your DJ to extend the songs for each part of the ceremony. I typically pre-mix the songs so they are about five minutes each. The reason for this; I don’t want the song to end before the bride gets to the front. As each song starts off, I watch the movement of the wedding party. When the last person is getting close to the preacher, I start to fade the song down. This goes for each special song as it starts and when the song ends.

friends and family are spread out, I would recommend a lapel mic for your preacher. As a precaution, I normally do sound checks beforehand to ensure everything is working. I also like to turn the microphone on at the last moment, so the crowd doesn’t hear the preacher talking to everyone before the ceremony starts. A wedding ceremony is a special occasion for you and yours, it doesn’t have to be stressful when picking out the music, or arranging the flow of the event. I would suggest asking your wedding DJ for suggestions when it comes to the music, and their experiences to help you through the planning process. Once everything is on paper, you will have an idea on the music and flow of the ceremony. DJ John

I like to meet with the preacher or reverend before the ceremony starts. I like to ask, “What is the last thing you plan to say after there are married.” The typical answer is, I will ask them to kiss and then I introduce them. I have had some preachers tell me that they will say, “You may now kiss the bride.” then have a prayer and after the prayer, they introduce the couple. As you can see, it’s always important for your DJ and the preacher to be on the same page when it comes to the last song. The last song should be happy, full of energy. A tune that gets your friends and family celebrating the occasion as you and your new spouse go walking down the aisle. If you decide you don’t want a wedding DJ, I have also seen string quartets, and a harp played at the ceremony. Both options were very nice during the ceremony. Sometimes, it might be necessary for the preacher to wear a microphone. If you’re in a small area that is enclosed, one might not be needed. If you’re in an area where there is over 100 people and your

{The story of your wedding}

S

By: Kristin Voss at Kendall Plantation

So, it’s here. Your big day. The wedding. The real deal. Its go time. Game day. The anticipation is over, the nightmares will stop, no more planning, no more nail biting, IT IS TIME TO PARTY. You invested in all the right vendors, devoted countless hours planning and designing the wedding from top to bottom. You are about to exchange vows and promise forever with the man of your dreams. You are the bell of the ball, all dressed in white, flawless make up and hair, the perfect jewelry, a handsome groom, the cutest little flower girl and ring bearer, and grandpa looks so sweet dancing with grandma on the dancefloor. It is the perfect day. Do you have this image in your head? Are you excited? Does it make you a little nervous and teary eyed? It should! I love this part! Now…..if you could only rewind this day and do it again and again, and share it with your friends and family that couldn’t make it, or watch it after your first big fight, or show your kids, and one day your grandkids…. If you could only just hear those words you spoke ever

so softly to your groom telling him you will always love him, and never forsake him. If you could hear your dad during the toast get choked up telling the story of his little girl, his princess, his everything… growing up to become the most incredible person. If you could just turn back time and be a fly on the wall watching your crazy cousin do the worm on the dance floor; you missed that part because you were visiting with your great aunt who insisted on pulling you aside to take a photo with her! If you could only see your favorite grandpa one more time in a video. Or maybe a couple of days after the wedding everyone is talking about your sister who decided to get crazy on the dance floor and showed off moves no one was expecting, but you missed it because you ran to the bar, or had obligatory photos to take with guests on the porch…it will happen! Your wedding only happens once! But nothing can preserve the memory quite like a video can. It is a live action documentary of one of the most important cherished days of your life. Even if you

think you will never forget your day, and you remember it vividly, there are some things you will not be able to experience or see with out a video to tell your story. Most brides describe their wedding as a blur! It goes by super fast, and spending thousands of dollars doesn’t sound worth it, if you aren’t going to be able remember it well! “The biggest problem I see, is that brides are so hung up in the details while planning a wedding, that it is almost impossible for them to think of anything but the details. Video is not about the details as much as it is about capturing a moment in time with the people closest to you, and if done right, creating a tribute to why you are together 10-30 years down the line when it becomes hard to remember why. People are the fabric of our lives, photos can capture their likeness but video captures their heart and soul. Like I say, its personal for me.” Mark Thomas with Mark Thomas Pro Photo and Video. Really,… who doesn’t want WINTER 2017

to be the star in their own movie?! Professional videographers have been trained to get the results you are looking for. They invested in high quality equipment to give you only the best outcome. The point is, I would give anything at all— to have a wedding video, and I would bet most brides who didn’t get video would say the same thing. Choosing the right video is of upmost importance and should not be a “oh we’ll add it if we have anything left over type thing”. For real, you are telling your story. Advances in camera technology have made it possible to capture weddings like never before. What videographers are able to do with digital editing makes a wedding video much more like a professional film. Take a second and click on the highlighted blue links above…watch a few of these videos from Mark Thomas and tell me you don’t get the warm and fuzzies! Invest in video. Don’t let your story go untold.

Do you want to build a Time-line?

W

By: Kristin Voss at Kendall Plantation

Wedding timelines can be confusing when you’ve never done one—even if you’ve attended a lot of weddings, you probably haven’t paid much attention to how long each individual aspect lasted, unless it was the most boring wedding drug out for what seemed like days.

here- it is based on the sunset location, time of year, and how hot or cold it typically is that time of the year. We know what works best at KP, and we know what is most appropriate for the comfort of you, your guests, and the perfect glow of the sun for photos.

Any wedding over 6 hours is dreadful for guests. “But really, I know we’re going to want to party until 1am!” you say. Dude—me too. But we’re in the minority. But as someone who’s hosted over 500 hundred weddings I will tell you—I can count the number of weddings where there has been a critical mass of guests still wanting to go after 10:30pm on one hand. Six hours is about the most weddings guests have in them.

EXAMPLE NUMERO UNO: {The early ceremony} (January-March, & Late OctoberDecember)

That said, should you make everyone go home at 10pm? Heck no. Move people to an after party! Pick a nearby bar ahead of time (or the hotel you are staying at), spread the word, and whoever wants to go can go. Do you have to host (as in, pay for) the after-party drinks? Negative. You totally can, and it would be super nice, but after paying for everyone’s drinks for six hours, you’re off the hook (and if you walk into a bar with a wedding dress on, I promise no one will make you pay for your drinks!).

•

{So, here we go} If you are booked at Kendall Plantation, take out that handy dandy 7-page contract you signed and thumb back to the last page— Conveniently, we have noted the suggested ceremony start time (you had to initial that spot remember?). We don’t just make up a number

{And there you have it} 6-hour wedding with all wedding activities concluded and all with 3 hours of solid open dance floor time, wedding celebrations, AND a 5 hour bar (whoa). Now, this may seem long to some, but really, 6 hours is a sweet spot. Nothing is crammed and slammed together, it is a relaxed pace, but still keeping the guests entertained. AND, you don’t have to watch dozens of your guests try to sneak out the door because they have been there over 6 hours and they are bored of dancing and drinking. You will save hundreds if not thousands of precious dollars on overtime wages from the DJ, Bar, Photographer, Video guy/ gal, and security. Most vendor packages start at 5 hours, with tons of logic behind it! A WINTER 2017

photographer/video crew can only take so many dancing photos…And with longer than 5 hours of bar, you risk drunken stupors, fights, accidents on site or off site, and not to mention a TON of wasted money on alcohol. Remember a couple of paragraphs ago….., if you want to get to that point, have an after party at a bar. Save yourself THOUSANDS of dollars of overtime payments to vendors by having a 5-6 hour event, and having an after party for the hard core group of folks who like to party! Always leave guests wanting more, not wanting to find a secret exit. Your wedding planner will guide you through this process a lot prettier than I. A timeline is very fluid and built upon your vision. Nothing is set in stone other than the ceremony start time—but be sure to consider the timing of each event, and the length of each event. Some weddings won’t have a toast, or garter toss/bouquet toss—saving a ton of time. Some won’t want cutting the cake to be such a huge ordeal, just cut it, pass it around and keep the party going. Once you sit down and play out your wedding in your head, jot down your ideas, wants and needs. A time-line is totally custom to you and built for you. Add in things like late night snack, fireworks, dollar dance, all sorts of activities that will change things up a bit keeping guests entertained. It doesn’t matter if you change a bit—say 5pm start time, or 6pm start time, just consider the 6 hour rule of thumb for event time. So, do you want to build a time-line?

The Story of Our Engagement

I

I made an appointment to meet with Pastor Ed Newton the super star preacher at our large CBC Church. Shortly after Alina Olthuis, showed up thinking she was just going to sign a few papers for a Church Leadership program I would be in. Alone with her in a modest conference room, Ed walks in. Her eyes open and her jaw drops, “I didn’t know we were meeting with YOU. I thought this was just a simple meeting,” she says shocked. Next Ed discusses church leadership for couples, and then I say, “Ed

I would like for you to bless our relationship.... I mean Ed what I would really like is for you to bless our marriage.” I take a knee and the pictures show what happens next. (Special thanks to Laurie Adalle McNew for photos and Stone Oak Jewelers for the ring) By: Tom White

It’s no secret that cooking at home is often healthier for you than dining out or consuming most of your daily calories from packaged foods. What might come as a surprise, though, is that doing so with your partner has its own distinct set of benefits. Not only is cooking itself, it can also reduce stress levels and build self-esteem. And when you cook with your spouse, those dividends are even greater.

Let’s face it, our grand country has had a rough go of it this hurricane season! There are not many places left to choose from for traveling this winter, sooooo.... I was thinking we would do something local and enjoy some of the many “taste” of our own Hill Country. This trip is for the wine connoisseurs of Texas and for those that just like a little sip from time to time. Fredericksburg is turning into the Texas Hill Country’s very own Napa Valley. There are so many vineyards to visit, you can just take your pick. There are even several tour companies that will pick you up at your lodgings and drive you around to an assortment of wineries. That way you can sip to your heart’s content and not worry about driving.

The unique log cabins at “Barons CreekSide village” is the place I have chosen for your special retreat in Fredericksburg, however there are many other lovely places so feel free to explore them and take your pick. There are 12 perfect quaint and quiet log cabins and 4 family houses on the property with a constant flowing creek amid their new vineyard. You can enjoy the king size bed, a Jacuzzi tub for 2, a wood-burning fireplace, and a private porch with rockers overlooking the bubbly creek. There isn’t much left out for your romantic escape. As for places to see and things to do there are many! From bakeries to cafe’s, vineyards to flower farms, you will not run out of things to do. Remember, Fredericksburg was

originally settled by German pioneers and many of the shops and eateries still reflect that heritage. Although there are many fine eateries in town, August E’s is a must for dinner! They serve the most amazing cocktails and dinner, you just can’t go wrong. August E’s prides themselves on preparing as many farm-to-table menu items as possible. Drive around (or be driven) and taste some wine, soak up some of what this amazing town has to offer. Then, at the end of the day, head back to your quiet cabin for a snuggle by the fire in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. Cheers to the new adventure and enjoy your staycation.

Everlasting Love

I

It’s always a pleasure interviewing people you know. We adore the Randle family and actually grew up with their son. So, I knew they would be the perfect Everlasting Loves Couple.

Marc Alan and Deborah Lee met on a bus in January 1973. They were both going to school at TLC, where Marc played basketball and Deborah was a cheerleader. They played cards the whole bus trip back and Marc remembers admiring her long red hair. He was so enthralled he even remembers what she was wearing. Deborah fell in love with Marc’s dreamer spirit and goal oriented mind, they had that in common and were a great match. They spent some time getting to know one another before Marc proposed on Valentine’s Day in 1975. They were married 42 years this last August the 16th. Marc started his career as a park ranger then took a position as a law enforcement officer with the SAPD. Deborah worked for Child Protective Services, where they even shared in a few cases. The couple went on to have two children, Phillip and Maggie, that they raised in Comfort, Texas. They are

proud to still call Comfort their home. When asked the hard questions, the couple admits to being best friends. That is not to mean they don’t fight, they just always try and remember to communicate and work through their differences. Marriage is hard they agreed, but they are in it for the long haul. When we asked for their tip to our young newlyweds, their advice was to stay the course, and don’t give up. Getting married is easy, it’s staying married - that is hard. Remember patience, be forgiving, and always communicate.

Thank you so much to the Randle family for sharing your love story and marriage tips. Cheers to many more!

Marc eventually retired as a program director after working 30 years in law enforcement. He spends his time with his family and grandkids and works on pet projects. Deborah retired as a supervisor with CPS. She babysits the grandkids a couple days a week. They now have 7 grand babies and Marc and Deborah both really enjoy their time with them. It is obvious that their family is number one in their lives and very important to the both of them.
