...and my red dot resolution!

A new year always brings new things—often, it’s excitement over what the new year will hold; sometimes, it’s gratitude that the old year is behind us; and usually, there are resolutions!

Personally, I’ve been all over the board where this one is concerned.

I tend to be one of “those people” who believes a goal is not really a goal unless it’s written down—so when I make resolutions, I write them down. This year, I only have one resolution.

Don’t let those little red notification buttons control you!

They are on EVERYTHING! I’m seriously considering a class action suit against the maker of the red dots…I believe they have given me Attention Deficit Disorder. I am working on something,

then I see it…the dot. I must make the dot go away, so I stop what I’m doing and “check it.”

Now, I know there are some of you who are thinking, “Just turn off the notification badges and ‘boom,’ you’re done!” NO, you silly rabbit!!! Then I won’t know what I’ve missed!

So, I have decided my resolution will be to practice keeping my focus and not let myself become distracted by the tempting red numbers until I am finished with the task at hand. I am in control. Right?

I’m pretty sure it’s going to take me all year to master it. I gotta go – my to do list just popped up with the number 6.

In addition to help from the SHSU community, many citizens of Huntsville have provided support for the Boys and Girls Club over the years. We are grateful for the interest and help given to this worthy endeavor.

As a board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Huntsville, you have helped guide this group with a look to the future. What accomplishment has given you the most satisfaction in that role?

As we have watched this local club grow, the board has seen the need for a bigger facility to meet the objectives of the program now and into the future. That dream is now becoming a reality. Ground has been broken at a new site across from the HISD transportation complex on MLK Drive, a new building has been ordered, and we are ready to pour a slab for this $2 million project. Although I no longer serve on the board, I am thrilled to see this new step into the club’s future. This new building will provide a place to serve 400 kids and will include a teen center as well. The leadership of the staff and volunteers has provided growth and a service of high quality for our Huntsville kids. Once again, my life has been blessed as I have had the privilege of being a part of this wonderful organization. It gives me great satisfaction to know that our community will enjoy future benefits as

I’ve served as chair of the regional Boys and Girls Club, have twice been a board member of the Chamber of Commerce, serving one term as finance chair, and have served on church boards with responsibilities as finance chair as well. In addition to these, I served on the HISD school board, on the Huntsville Planning and Zoning Board, and as President of the National Trailer Dealers Association.

I currently have memberships in both the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs. It’s been fun.

I’ve enjoyed serving in these capacities and believe in the causes they support.

Ann and I enjoy gardening together, and you can find me on many occasions working away on a wood project of some sort. I love working with wood, and whether it be cabinets or bookshelves, I’ve spent many hours with my tools and saws, crafting items for our home, our children, and our grandchildren.

I had the pleasure of building the first Book Box in Huntsville, which is located near the

city pool. And at present, I am building a cedar strip canoe.

Building a canoe sounds like an arduous task.

How is this accomplished?

To begin, I had to make the forms for the canoe and a “strongback” to support the project. I used 1˝x6˝x18´ rough cut western red cedar, planed it to ¾˝ and cut each board into ¼˝ x ¾˝ strips. The edges were routed to allow a mating of the joint between the strips when installed on the canoe. The applying of these strips included gluing the edges between the strips and using small nails and staples to install the strips on the forms. They were installed 6 at a time, then going to the other side to install 6 more. This process was followed until the canoe was entirely stripped.

I have heard that you have a great love for baseball. Is that rumor true?

Yes, I love baseball. I grew up in the New York area and have been a Yankees fan all my life. And, of course, being close to Houston has made me an Astros fan as well. A friend of mine and I go to spring training somewhere every year, and we have been able to visit every major league ballpark. We attended the first major league game in the new Atlanta stadium, SunTrust Park, a game between the Braves and the Yankees.

it ready for the installation of a light weight fiberglass application. This is where I am at this time. Once the exterior is done, the canoe is removed from the strongback, and the same procedures are followed on the interior.

The next step is making and installing the seats, gunnels, and other accessories. And finally, the moment has come to float it on the lake and begin enjoying the fruit of my labors with my wife, and my children and grandchildren!

Please share about your family.

I’ve mentioned Ann, my beautiful wife of 52 years, a fantastic mother and steadfast supporter of all my endeavors. She is a nurse and, over the past 10 years, we have taken week-long mission trips with Benevolent Missions International to Fiji. Benevolent Missions International is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing needed ophthalmic care to the underserved in many areas around the world. Ann assists the surgery team, and I operate the tonometer, which measures pressure in the eye.

I’ve become known as “Dr. Poke!” We will be traveling to Belize with this group in 2018.

Our 3 children, all graduates of Huntsville High School, have gone on to have successful careers in medicine and business. Our 8 grandchildren range in age from 12 to 20.

What are your future plans?

Ann and I love to travel. We have been to all seven continents, and have just returned from a trip to Normandy with the Traveling Aggies. While there, we got to visit the

Texas Embassy, which was maintained by the Republic of Texas in Paris from 1836 through 1845. Antarctica was my favorite destination. We will continue to travel as long as we are able.

My life has been filled with one blessing after another. I look forward to a future filled with family, friends, and more opportunities to serve this wonderful community of Huntsville.

Pet Safe Car Rides

So, who doesn’t let their furry friend ride along at times? Or maybe you have never taken your pet for a drive and are considering it. The experience can be both fun and exciting, yet stressful and dangerous at the same time.

Your number one objective while traveling with your pet should be safety for you and your pet. There are 43.3 million households in the U.S. with pets. An American Automobile Association survey showed that over 80% of dog owners drive with their pets in the car. Only 16% of people who travel with pets use proper safety restraints; therefore, 84% of people are not restraining pets while driving. The American Humane Society states 100,000 dogs die in truck beds each year, which does not include those that may jump out of vehicle windows or are involved in a crash while riding within the car. According to the National Safety Council, over 2.5 million rear-end collisions, the most common type of accident, are reported every year. So, crash-tested pet safety products for your pets are a must. If a car crashes at just 25 mph, an unrestrained dog can be projected forward at a force equal to 40 times its weight. For instance, a 10 pound dog can exert 300 pounds of pressure in an accident and a 75 pound dog can achieve an impact force of 3,000 pounds in a crash, which could be a lethal blow for both you and your pet.

There are several simple and inexpensive ways of keeping you and your pet safe in the car. You can find a good selection of safety harnesses and crates available today which prevent injury to your pets. Minimally, you can loop a strong, thick leash through the seatbelt to confine your dog from moving around. A protective back seat hammock can also be used to prevent falling off the seat during sudden stops, and will also keep your seat clean and protected. A towel or sheet can also be laid down over the seat, especially if your pet if prone to car sickness. A proper harness system can allow enough room to stand up and turn around and lay down if wanting. You can still open the window to allow them to feel the breeze, but protect them from flying objects instead of allowing them to hang their face out the window. Most of all, do not allow your pet to ride unsecured in the back of a pickup. Check out the many places available that carry crash certified safety equipment for traveling with your pet. You can visit www.centerforpetsafety.org for specific crash testing information.

If motion sickness or nervousness are an issue, there are several means to help lessen that. Exercising your pet prior to car travel may help them to feel calmer. Covering a crate during travel may help as well. Helping your pet adapt to its crate prior to traveling should be done beforehand.

Bring along a favorite toy.

Anxiolytic products and prescriptions are also available. A good, natural pet-specific anxiety reducer to consider for cats would be Feliway and Adaptil for dogs. Therapeutic grade essential oils that are good for stress and anxiety would be another great option. Safe travels!

Toothpaste??? I’m So Confused Go down the aisles at the store, and there are rows and rows of toothpastes. More toothpastes cause more confusion. Brushing with toothpaste (also called a “dentifrice”) is important for several reasons. First and foremost, toothpaste and a correct brushing action work to remove plaque, a sticky, harmful film of bacteria that grows on your teeth that causes caries (decay), gum disease, and eventual tooth loss, if not controlled. Second, the toothpaste contains fluoride, which makes the entire tooth structure more resistant to decay and promotes remineralization, which aids in repairing early decay before the damage can even be seen. Third, special ingredients in the dentifrice help to clean and polish the teeth and remove stains over time. Fourth, toothpastes help freshen breath and leave your mouth with a clean feeling.

I know it can be confusing, but if you don’t have any specific needs, as long as your toothpaste contains fluoride, the brand you buy really does not matter. It doesn’t matter whether or not it is in paste, gel, or even powder form, or containing a certain flavor. All fluoride dentifrices work effectively to fight plaque and cavities and clean and polish tooth enamel.

There are, however, toothpastes that contain a variety of ingredients geared toward specific needs (more confusion!). If your teeth are hypersensitive to hot or cold, consider trying toothpaste designed for sensitive teeth. Dentifrices containing baking soda and/or hydrogen

peroxide (which are both good cleansing agents) give the teeth and mouth a clean, fresh, pleasant feeling that can offer an incentive to brush more, but fluoride is the true active ingredient at work protecting your teeth. Some prefer tartar control toothpaste to prevent the buildup of soft calculus deposits on their teeth. New pastes offer advanced whitening formulas aimed at safely removing stains to make teeth brighter and shinier, although they can’t nearly match the effectiveness of a professional bleaching formula administered or prescribed by a dentist.

To clear up some of the confusion about toothpaste, I thought it would help to give you a list of some of the most common ingredients (believe me, there are many others) and how they help: *Fluoride - Fluoride acts topically - protects teeth by hardening the outer enamel surface, making teeth less susceptible to decay. Will not remove current decay. *Desensitizing - Strontium chloride, potassium nitrate protects exposed dentin by blocking the tubes in the teeth that are connected to nerves. Must use the product for several weeks before any therapeutic effects are felt. *Whitening - Hydrogen peroxide, carbamide peroxide, and abrasive ingredients may lighten and/or remove certain stains from enamel. After prolonged use, may experience gum irritation or increased sensitivity. Not all teeth will “whiten” the same way. Will not work on all stains.

Many have asked what I use. This is my daily routine--I take my favorite flavored toothpaste with fluoride, wet the brush and dip it in a small fruit cup of Arm and Hammer baking soda I have sitting by my sink. Living with Children In a letter to the editor of the La Crosse (Wisconsin) Tribune, psychologist Afton Koball and two colleagues raise objections to a recent column in which I asserted that one can be parented badly and still parent well. It comes down to one’s perspective, and is, therefore, a matter of choice. Said another way, parenting is influential but not deterministic.

Koball contends that I am ignoring research linking “high levels of toxic stress in childhood to chronic health conditions and even a reduced lifespan.” Noted, but that was not the subject of the column in question. Furthermore, I contend that even someone who experienced an adverse childhood and suffers compromised health as a result can still be a very good parent.

Furthermore, studies report norms, not individual outcomes.

Undoubtedly, there were subjects

in the study Koball cites who suffered adverse childhoods, but who as adults did not suffer chronic health issues. Some of these individuals may even have had abnormally healthy adulthoods. The “link” in question does not, by a longshot, refer to a one-to-one correspondence. Said otherwise, what is “toxic” stress to some is not to others. The question becomes: How is it that some abused children fare rather well as adults, even as parents?

The list of high-functioning individuals who experienced significant hardship, even abuse, as children is quite long. It includes Oprah, Howard Schultz of Starbucks, Louis Armstrong, and Eleanor Roosevelt. Many such individuals attribute their success as adults, at least in part, to the adversity they experienced as kids.

All these studies – including the ongoing Kauai Longitudinal Study begun in 1955 and a 2010 study done at the University of Oxford –cite folks who did well despite bad childhoods.

Koball ends his letter by saying that people who have experienced adverse childhoods need counseling. That is psychology’s central narrative, but speaking of studies, no consistent body of research compels the conclusion that any form of mental health counseling/therapy can be relied upon to produce positive results.

In fact, a significant percentage of consumers report that mental health counseling was a negative experience, that it made matters worse.

Writing in the Wall Street Journal (November 10, 2017), clinical psychologist Meg Jay shares the story of two brothers raised in a home in which the father was a violent alcoholic. One brother is a drinker and an abuser, while the other is abstinent and a model parent. When asked how they came to be who they were, both brothers gave the same answer: “Given who my father was, how could I not?”

The anecdote illustrates my point: Whether flight or fight, an individual’s response to adversity is clearly a matter of choice. As the old parenting proverb has it, every child has a mind of his own.

Texas hill Country

If you’ve ever been to the Texas Hill Country, you can visualize what makes this beautiful part of Texas so unique. When I think of my visits, all my senses recall this area in some way. I remember the smell of cedar, the hills rolling with cacti and patchy grass, and the rocky terrain from scarce rain. These things are what I feel, smell, and see when I think about my favorite part of Texas and the sweet memories I associate with it.

My family is from the coast and lives just a few miles from Galveston, so when we would travel to the hill country to visit our deer lease, it was always a getaway that promised different weather, topography, and adventures. The deer lease was in Kendalia, and every time we’d take a trip there when we were young, we’d make a trip to the Riverwalk in San Antonio, where the streets are full of culture and color. When we were hungry for a hot meal, we’d drive into Boerne for BBQ or breakfast tacos. A stop at the Kendalia Country Store is essential at least once a trip to stock up on snacks and to get a styrofoam cup of freshly made iced tea. Just an hour away from the deer lease is my aunt in San Marcos and my grandmother’s lake house in Canyon Lake. On our drives to visit them while we were in the area, my sisters and I wouldn’t let my dad hear the end of it until we pulled over on the side of the road in Fredericksburg to buy some peaches from a truck bed or wooden stand. If you’ve never had a Fredericksburg peach, you are truly missing out. The fleshy fruit dissolves in your mouth and you think to yourself, “If there ever was a peach to represent all peaches, this is it.” I believe wholeheartedly they are the best in the world (and there’s no talking me out of it).

Just a short drive away from the deer lease, the possibilities were endless. We could explore Gruene, Boerne, New Braunfels, Fredericksburg, and Canyon Lake, just to name a few locations in the area settled by Germans long ago. The scenery between towns is rolling hills, winding roads, and big Texas skies stretching above them. When I got my driver’s license at 16, this was the ultimate game changer—the freedom and ability to explore and travel—driving to the deer lease and lake house to explore this beautiful part of Texas whenever I could. I started burning up the roads and never stopped.

During a weekend this past summer, my friends and I stayed four days on Canyon Lake. To say we were exhausted afterward is an understatement—we burned the candle at both ends and covered a lot of ground, but I warned them—I was so excited to share with them this place that was so dear to me.

Our first day there, we pulled into the neighborhood that borders Canyon Lake, and my friends were amazed at the big groups of deer wandering casually across roads and grazing in people’s front yards.

deer only a few feet away. Here, deer are like squirrels. My friends couldn’t believe how many were walking around, not minding us a bit; as you can imagine, all the phones came out and started taking pictures. Judging by their reactions, you’d have thought we were on an African safari or something. Their excitement was hilarious!

Our second day at Canyon Lake, we stopped at a farmer’s market with signs for half a mile before the entrance, reading “peaches”...”squash…”tomatoes”…“bread”, every 50 feet or so. We parked and got out with anticipation; we were greeted with baskets of fresh, locally grown fruit. Inside are shelves of fresh produce, homecanned jams, breads, cookies, pickled items, cornbread mixes—a plethora of handmade, specialty items you can’t get anywhere else!

I sigh and take it all in. I imagine this is what heaven looks like. I accept the fact that my wallet is about to take a hit, and it did 15 minutes later, as I filled my brown paper bag at checkout with sourdough bread, tea, apple butter, homemade cookies, cornbread mix, and of course, a basket of peaches. My favorite form of nearly everything is either homegrown or homemade, and, boy, does the Texas Hill Country hit the spot in that area!

Aside from farmer’s markets and shops, we need something else.

Ultimately, we crave entertainment, young or old. But since summer is over and it’s getting cold outside, what is there to do in the area besides float the Guadalupe River? WHAT on earth can your family do for entertainment in the hill country when it’s far too cold to do anything in the lakes or rivers?! Well, there is quite a lot to do, and it is my pleasure to share my personal favorite places to eat, shop, and explore in the beautiful Texas Hill Country!

The Gruene Historic District is packed with history, energy, amazing food, shops, wineries, and more. my two favorite towns—Canyon Lake and Gruene. The laid-back town of Canyon Lake is home to my grandmother’s lake house and some of the neatest places I know. If you’re in the area and your belly is growling for some good food, stop by Startz Café or Las Barcas Mexican restaurant for a homemade meal. For your shopping needs, there are multiple river supply shops to pick from, as well as fly fishing

shops, cafes, and antique shops. Pink Elephant Resale Shop is a great stop for used fashion and vintage accessories. For my fellow coffee lovers, there are many mom and pop coffee shops dotting the roads. My new favorite is Kafekali and Bakery. I recommend an iced macchiato and a raspberry or blueberry danish, made in house (heavenly).

On my most recent trip to stay in Canyon Lake, it was the weekend of December 9th, just a few days after Huntsville and much of Texas got snow. Perhaps this miraculous blanket of white put us Texans into holiday spirit mode, because the town of Gruene was alive and bustling with holiday cheer. Christmas decorations lined the streets, and lights shimmered from the roofs of restaurants and inns. People walked the streets in festive clothes, wearing jackets to break the chilly wind. A long line of parents and their children were wrapped around a building. Wondering what the fuss was about, I saw above the line a sign reading, “This Weekend: Photos with Cowboy Kringle.”

Sure enough, at the front of the line sat Santa in his suit, wearing cowboy boots, a child atop his lap.

Finally, there is something for everyone in Gruene, Texas. In particular, the Gruene Historic District is packed with history, energy, amazing food, wineries, and most anything else your little Texan heart could hope for!

A few of my favorite shops are Rusty Bugs & Roosters, Hunters Junction, and Traveling Gypsy Antiques. If you’re a true Texan, you’ve probably visited Gruene Hall; at night, the band can be heard outside by passersby, and during the day, visitors are welcome to go inside and check out the iconic dance hall

Next door sits the Gristmill, one of the most unique restaurants in Texas. The multi-layered balconies open toward the river, overlooking the beautiful woods, with seating both inside and out.

Down the road, on the corner of the street, sits Cantina Del Rio, an authentic Mexican restaurant offering some of the best enchiladas and quesadillas I’ve ever had.

Across the street from these incredible restaurants sits the Gruene General Store, a haven stocked with Texas memorabilia, canned salsas, gifts, and treats. Just down the road from Gruene Historic District sits Gruene Lake Village, home to High Cotton Inn, Two Rivers Yoga, Lil Connie’s Cottage Children’s Boutique, The Republic Cigars, and Allen Benjamin’s Salon and Spa, to name a few.

Being home to such a wide array of climates and terrains, Texas is an amazing state to drive across. I have always loved seeing the changes in landscape on long road trips across the state. The Texas Hill Country, in particular, has a unique terrain that somewhat makes you feel like you’re not in Texas anymore. The rocky hills and dips in the earth kind of take you somewhere else, and the beauty elevates the soul. There is no place like home, and there is no place like Texas! Hopefully, my itinerary can help during your next visit to the Texas Hill Country. Explore on!

New Year = New Fruit Trees!

January in East Texas is tree planting season. The cold, wet, blustery days of winter are perfect fruit tree planting weather. Trees respond best to cold, wet soils. Cold temperatures keep the plant in dormancy for less shock and better root growth until first bud break. As we venture into fruit tree gardening, let us review the requirements and a bit of background knowledge to give you the 101 of fruit tree gardening.

Fruit trees require full sun (8+ hours of unobstructed direct sunlight), excellent drainage, and consistent watering throughout the year. Fruit trees are a crop and must be treated as such for successful production. Fruit trees require maintenance and care, some more than others. Fruit trees are either self- fertile or require a cross pollinator.

Peaches, apples, figs, apricots, nectarine and citrus are self-fertile and can cross pollinate themselves, BUT for best production, plant two fruit trees with a cross pollination time.

In other words, 2 varieties of peach trees that have a least a one week overlap on pollination time will give you the success you want.

Independent garden centers have already taken this into account, and only have trees in stock that will pollinate each other and have the correct chilling hour requirement for your gardening area. The term “chilling hour” is the amount of time below 42 degrees a tree must receive to set buds for fruit production. The chilling hour on a 75 year average for Walker County is 650 and Montgomery County is 600-625. As you may have noticed, the winter

of 2014 put us over 1100 chilling hours, and fruit tree production was the heaviest yield we have seen in years. It also cut down on disease and insect control, and this year may end with the same result.

By far, the most popularly grown fruit tree in Texas is the peach tree, which is also the least drought tolerant. The apple follows closely, with several low chilling hour beauties that A&M has produced so Texas can enjoy homegrown apples. The pecan is next, and one of the fussiest trees. Once established, pecans are a breeze. The first few years are the most crucial. Plums, pears, figs, nectarines, almonds and even a few select cherries can also be included in your garden, with figs and pears being the hardiest and most drought tolerant. In other words, if you miss two week of watering in summer, the fig and pear will be a better bet on surviving, the peach will be the first down.

Fruit trees will do best in a deep sandy loam area, devoid of heavy clay. The tree should be planted at the established soil level in the pot, or if bare rooted, a minimum of 2” below the graft. Fruit trees are grafted, and the graft is the “humpy bend” at the bottom of the trunk, where a hardy root system was paired with a certain fruit variety to make your selected fruit tree. The seed will not bear true to form. Plant your tree higher than the existing soil level for drainage, fertilize with a root stimulator at planting and again in 6 weeks. Fruit trees will require pruning and shaping in late January for easy harvesting,

Along the Road In the early days of Texas, a variety of currencies served as cash, including Spanish and Mexican money, bank notes from various U.S. states, and currency issued by private companies (call shinplasters). The Republic of Texas first issued paper money in 1837.

This currency was called “star money” for the small star on the face of the bill. The star money was not face value currency, but rather interest-bearing notes (similar to a treasury

bill) that circulated by being endorsed over to the next payee. In 1838, Texas issued change notes with elaborate designs on the front and blank backs.

The so-called Texas “redbacks” were issued in 1839. The government printed over two million dollars in redbacks, which were initially worth about 37 cents to a U.S. dollar.

By 1842, the redbacks had become virtually worthless and had lost the power of legal tender. Once again Texans used bank notes from other states and shinplasters instead of the Texas money. A new series of currency, called exchequer bills, was issued in 1842. These were similar once again to treasury bills and little use was made of them by the general public.

The Republic of Texas had little in the way of silver and gold and never minted any coins.

Sweet, Sticky and Spicy Chicken Ingredients 1 Tbs brown sugar

2 Tbs hot sauce

2 Tbs honey

salt and pepper to taste

¼ cup soy sauce

4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves - cut into ½ inch strips

2 tsp chopped fresh ginger root 2 tsp chopped garlic

Directions 1. Mix together brown sugar, honey, soy sauce, ginger, garlic and hot sauce in a small bowl.

Ingredients 6 Roma tomatoes, sliced into rounds

Buttermilk Salad Ingredients 1 (20 oz) can crushed pineapple, with juice 1 (6 oz) pkg apricot or peach flavored jello

Bruschetta Salad

2 cups buttermilk 1 (8 oz) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

½ lb mozzarella cheese, cut into bite-size cubes 1 cup crushed garlicflavored bagel chips

Directions 1. Place the pineapple in a medium saucepan, and bring to a boil.

½ cup torn fresh basil leaves

2. Stir in the jello mix until completely dissolved. Remove to a bowl, and chill until partially set, about 1 hour.

¼ cup light olive oil

3. Stir in buttermilk, and chill again until thickened.

4. Fold in whipped topping, and refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours.

½ red onion, chopped

salt and ground black pepper to taste

4. Beat egg whites in a glass, metal, or ceramic bowl until stiff peaks form.

Gradually add ½ cup sugar, continuing to beat for 1 more minute.

6. Bake in the preheated oven until cake is golden and a skewer inserted in the center comes out clean, about 50 minutes.

Check cake after 20 and 30 minutes to see if it is starting to brown too quickly. Cover top lightly with aluminum foil once cake starts to brown.

7. Remove from oven and cool in the pan.

Remove ring, peel away parchment paper and transfer cake to a serving plate. Drizzle with liqueur and dust with confectioners’ sugar.

Charles Pebworth has been at it a long time. At 90, he’s still doing art and, although he hasn’t lived in Texas since 2001, his works still dot the region’s landscape (his works can be seen at the entrance of The Woodlands and at Huntsville City Hall, to name just two) and adorn homes, museums, and public buildings in the area—and across the country. These works reflect a passion that has lasted at least seven decades and continues with his ongoing work in watercolor. Speaking of passions, he’s still married to his wife, Nona; these two will celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary in 2018.

You are actually a member of the Choctaw tribe. Tell us about your upbringing.

I was born in Kinta, Oklahoma. As you mention, I was born on a Choctaw Reservation. But I spent most of my time on the Osage Reservation, because my father worked at the Indian Agency there.

I feel more attached to the Osage than to the Choctaw.

When he was planning The Woodlands, he came to me and said, “We want you to think about a sculpture for The Woodlands.” We drove on the highway, stopped, got out, crawled through a barbed-wire fence, and he said, “This is going to be the entrance to The Woodlands”!

How much did you make off of that commission?

$60,000. It was a large piece. We made it in four parts in Houston, and they were going to fly the pieces in by helicopter, but they couldn’t get permission to fly it over housing developments, so they ended up bringing it in on trucks.

Sounds like a logistical nightmare.

Well, then they rigged up a crane, and they attached cables and a bathtub to it. I got in the bathtub, they hauled me up, and that’s how I observed and directed the project.

How large is the piece in Houston’s Hyatt Regency?

I think it is 27 feet high and 50 feet wide. This was in the 1970s, and the architects of the hotel chose a group of artists, which included David Adickes and me. They said, “Now, this art needs to last at least seven years.” My piece has lasted almost 50 years, and it is still up. An appraiser called me a couple of years ago, and we discussed the value of the piece, and it’s between $100,000 and $250,000 in today’s market.

In addition to teaching, you were doing numerous commissions.

I was fortunate, because I was active from the 1950s to the 1990s in different galleries in Houston. Often, they would say, “We’d like to commission you, but could you do a sketch?” And I’d say, “No, let

Before we left Huntsville, we counted around 4,000 pieces that we had sold in different galleries.

And you are still doing watercolors.

Yes. My watercolor studio is in my home, and I am still creating new works. I just sent 12 to the Wynne Home Arts Center. I’ve always done watercolors. Back at SHSU, we couldn’t do nude paintings because, politically, it wasn’t acceptable. So I did watercolors of semi-nudes, but I put wings on them, and that made them okay.

How many pieces of art do you think you have done in total?

How long did you work at SHSU? I retired in 1993, after working there for 36 years.

When you retired, did you think you’d still be a working artist 24 years later?

Not at all. I was in high school when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and people didn’t plan deep into the future then. But I went into the Army, served in World War II and Korea, met Nona, and here we are. 2018 will mark our 65th wedding anniversary.

Not bad for not planning.

Ring Ceremony SHSU

His father Samuel Houston had been a major during the American Revolutionary War. When Sam Houston joined the U.S. Army in 1813, his mother Elizabeth Houston understood her son’s decision. She called Sam to her side and handed him a musket saying, “Never disgrace it—for remember, I had rather all my sons should fill one honorable grave, than one of them should turn his back to save his life.” She told him to always remember, “While the door to my cottage is open to brave men, it is eternally shut to cowards.” Elizabeth Houston placed a small gold band on his finger with a one-word inscription—HONOR. This served well the man who would soldier in the War of 1812 and the Texas Revolution, as well as serve as a U.S Representative and Tennessee Governor, President of the Republic of Texas, Texas Representative, U.S Senator, and Texas Governor.

In response to student demands, and in support of then SHSU President Dr. James Gaertner’s goals to revisit old traditions and

start new ones, a committee composed of students, alumni, faculty and staff was formed several years ago to create a design for an official Sam Houston State University ring. The committee voted unanimously on a new design which they felt “depicts the character of SHSU.” Each gold ring symbolically captures the uniqueness of SHSU. The top of the ring features “SH” above a star and surrounded by the words, “Sam Houston State University.” Students may select diamonds to highlight the top of the ring. One side of the ring displays Austin Hall with “SHSU” below, and the other side shows a high-contrast image of the statue of General Sam Houston with the founding year of “1879” below and the class year to the right of Sam Houston. Cast into the inside of the ring, as with Sam Houston’s ring from his mother, is the word “Honor.”

Along with the new ring began a new tradition of an official SHSU ring ceremony. The first annual spring ring ceremony took place on the steps of Austin Hall and the pit of Old Main on April 22, 2004 and was the kickoff for the 125th anniversary celebration of Sam Houston State University. At the first ceremony, 183 students received rings. The tradition took hold and has grown.

By Gaertner’s final ring ceremony as university president in 2010, a record 540 SHSU students received their ring at the annual ceremony. In appreciation to Gaertner, an oversized replica of the official Sam Houston State University ring was presented to him during the ceremony.

Along with the standard inscription of the word “honor,” an additional inscription read, “For your leadership and guidance in laying the foundation for the Official Ring Program.”

Concerning the ceremony, current SHSU President Dr. Dana Hoyt states, “The first time I attended the ring ceremony was as a Vice President for Finance…I was amazed at how the students really reacted so strongly to the ceremony, and I see that even today as President when you’re watching them out there, and you’re shaking their hands, and how excited they are.”

The senior rings are guarded overnight in the Sam Houston homestead by the SHSU ROTC.

Since 2014, the ceremony has expanded to include even more special meaning in the conveyance of the rings marking a milestone of achievement toward college graduation.

The journey begins the day before the ring presentation.

The cases of senior rings are escorted to the Sam Houston home by the SHSU ROTC. The rings are placed in the bedroom of the homestead, where they SHSU President Dr. Dana Hoyt are guarded throughout the hands out rings to seniors night. The day of the ceremony, the rings are escorted by the ROTC and the SHSU Police Department to the Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum, where they are handed out individually to the recipients

by SHSU President Dana Hoyt during the evening ceremony.

Students continue to embrace and grow this tradition. This year marks the first year Sam Houston has had to split into two ceremonies, one in the fall, and one in the spring, to accommodate the growing number of incoming seniors eager to participate. The fall ceremony was held on November 8, 2017, and the spring ceremony is scheduled for April 3, 2018.

Health Matters

Age-Related Disease: the Real Danger to Wellbeing As you may have noticed, we are taking the forest-approach to health matters, so we don’t get bogged down in details, unless they are essential. Now we will dissect the enemy of health—disease.

Disease is the enemy of wellbeing and can severely limit our functional independence. A “dis-ease,” meaning a lack of ease, is a condition having a host of implications (all bad), because disease has potential to reduce wellbeing well below what is normally experienced.

According to Stedman’s Medical dictionary, disease produces “An interruption, cessation, or disorder of bodily function.” Notably, the interval a disease takes from its beginning to when decreases in function occur is very important, as we shall see.

Aging-related diseases are the bad actors: cancer, strokes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s,

and others. These are avoidable, because they take decades to cause problems! This provides opportunity to remove their causes.

Their causes must be abolished to be effective. Diseases present as illnesses when the body’s compensatory mechanisms are beaten.

Doctors treat illnesses correctly by identifying the disease causing it. Advanced diseases are the causes of disruptions in wellbeing.

Medicine’s purpose is to restore wellbeing.

Headaches are illnesses which can have a dozen different causes, requiring different restorative treatments.

Identifiable signs and symptoms are gauges in diagnosing diseases. A symptom is something a person experiences and a sign is something that can be seen, usually by a doctor. A heart attack is diagnosed by the sudden onset of crushing left frontal chest

You are the occupant and owner of your body. If you accept that fact and give your body the respect it deserves, you will succeed at achieving better health. agony, which tends to radiate down the left arm. Signs of a heart attack include grasping the left chest, pale countenance, vomiting, and diffuse perspiring. Tests such as an electrocardiogram and blood enzymes confirm the diagnosis. A diagnosis tells the doctor what to do to minimize damage and restore functionality (i.e. health).

Thus, identifiable symptoms and signs define illnesses that result from disease and, if the aggregate is unique enough, it satisfies one of the criteria defining a disease. Obvious patterns are termed syndromes. Syndromes often can be named to honor their discoverers, the anatomical area affected, or the general pathological process. Some have acronyms such as AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome). There are thousands of syndromes, many of which are unknown outside a particular medical specialty or because they are so rare.

It is important to prepare your body to react favorably in situations that could threaten your health. This defines the core of preventative medicine, but the physician is not in charge. The body’s owner is responsible. This is a foundational premise of my health-promoting efforts: You are the occupant and owner of your body. If you accept that fact and give your body the respect it deserves, you will succeed at achieving better health.

When we have explored fully the basics, we will begin with the specific means to achieve successful healthful living as contained in my book Live Better While You Age.

Unrelenting Grace

Photos by Libby Rogers Unrelenting Grace Ministries launched in June 2017, but it started long before then.

Teresa Schultz, founder of Unrelenting Grace Ministries, grew up in a Christian household in Texas, yet experienced physical, emotional, and sexual abuse at the hand of family members from a young age. “Every family is dysfunctional, because we are human,” said Teresa, expressing compassion. “I love them, but we were broken.”

Teresa’s senior year of high school brought a new love with a wonderful Christian man who treated her well, but ended tragically when he died suddenly from a brain tumor.

She grew bitter and angry towards God. “I had a full ride to Blinn College, and that was a good place to be bitter,” recalled Teresa. “I got into the party scene, drank and did drugs, and I would do anything for a fix.” She continued, “I had a friend named Rhonda, and I would call her bawling and crying, complaining that I was miserable, and every time she would tell me that God loved me, and she loved me, and that I knew what I needed to do.”

Teresa hit rock bottom one morning when she woke up in a locked garage with no idea how she got there. She banged on the door until a stranger let her out. She called Rhonda and said, “I’m done.” Rhonda sent her a plane ticket and brought Schultz into her Arkansas home. That day, Teresa quit all substance abuse and the party lifestyle cold turkey.

Six months sober, a dear childhood friend, Glenn, re-entered her life at the perfect time when, as fate would have it, his family moved to the same Arkansas town as Rhonda. Glenn and Teresa fell in love, were married, and moved back to Texas. Teresa is a drummer, and Glenn can play nearly any instrument, so they formed a band. Playing in bars proved to be a mistake for Teresa, who quickly relapsed and spent the next several years as an addict.

“My husband doesn’t fully understand my struggles because he’s not an addict,” she said.

“Yet he stood by me as I struggled, and as I lost the house and pawned our possessions to buy alcohol, he never left me.” Teresa’s daughter was attending the youth group at University Heights Baptist Church in Huntsville. “She told me her youth group was praying for me,” Teresa recalled. “That’s what brought me back to church in 2007.”

Motivated by her love for her children and husband, along with a desire to live right, she tried to stay clean, but relapsed again in 2009. This time Teresa entered rehabilitation.

In rehabilitation, she learned to journal as a form of therapy, and soon realized she loved writing, laying the foundation for what would one day become Unrelenting Grace Ministries.

Teresa found joy in writing. She could express herself in ways she could not while speaking. Even through another relapse, writing helped her cope and grow. She started a blog that gained a following, and she was encouraged by a friend to put together a book with all of her writing. Teresa said, “I write about my own experiences and I apply it to God’s word.” She self-published her first book in 2011, a rough compilation of her blog posts.

Sharing her experience with others through writing opened doors for Teresa

to speak. “My ministry has been written.

That’s where I’m comfortable,” said Teresa. “I was given the nudge to help lead Wednesday night Bible study. I gave my testimony, and the more I spoke, the less scared I was.” She was then asked to share her testimony with her group at Celebrate Recovery. “It’s amazing how many people come up to me and tell me they relate to what I have been through.”

Now four years sober, Teresa followed the lead of the Holy Spirit to officially launch Unrelenting Grace Ministries. As an author and speaker, Teresa’s mission is to spread the spark of hope to the desperate and hopeless, fanning to flame the faith of the lost and broken.

The name of Unrelenting Grace Ministries comes from Lamentations 3:22-23.

“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, For his compassions never fail.

They are new every morning; Great is your faithfulness.” (NIV) “God is so faithful to us that every morning His mercies are new,” Teresa said with a sparkle in her eyes. “I want to minister to God’s unrelenting grace to the people in need of a second chance or a fresh start.”

Teresa is quite obviously full of joy. She takes her failures and heartbreaks and uses them as proof of the complete redemption of God. She explained, “God pursued me constantly, no matter how many times I turned my back on Him, no matter how many times I said I hated Him. He never gave up on me. That’s unrelenting grace.”

Her second book, The Bible in Poetry, was published in July 2017 and is volume one of a four volume series. In the book, Teresa takes creative license in translating scripture into poetry, interspersed with devotionals and food for thought.

She shared one of her favorite passages her. She says to Him, ‘You are the God who from her book, an interpretation from sees me.’” With another smile, Teresa continZephaniah Chapter 30: ued, “Now I look back and I can say that He is the God who saw me through all of that.”

When asked who her inspirations and mentors are, Teresa smiled and said, “Beth Moore. I love her. She resonates with me. We have gone through a lot of the same things.

You can tell she just loves people, and that’s had a huge influence on me and Unrelenting Grace Ministries.” Another inspiration comes from the story of Hagar in Genesis 16. Teresa explained, “Hagar runs into the woods, hiding from Sarai, and God comes to her and finds

Better to be Covered in Covenant than New Year’s Resolutions

by Wes Altom The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They celebrated the new year not in January, however, but in mid-March, when crops were planted. As part of a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay debts and to return objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered forerunners of our New Year’s resolutions.

For early Christians, the new year became the traditional occasion for thinking about past mistakes and resolving to do better in the future. In 1740, English clergyman John Wesley created the Covenant Renewal Service, most commonly held on New Year’s Eve or New Year’s Day. These included readings from Scriptures and hymn singing, and served as a spiritual alternative to the raucous celebrations normally held to celebrate the coming of the new year.

While there is good and no harm in any occasion for self-refection and commitment to improve, God wants so much more for us than the occasional holiday or special event. We are so special to him, in fact, that he invites us to live in kingdom covenant with him, a daily relationship and renewal. And THAT is true cause for celebration— the party of the ages!
