LETTER LETTER FROM FROM THE THE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT Dear Neighbors, I hope that all of you are having a nice Spring. It’s hard to believe it’s already pool season! The pool will be opening on Friday, April 14, and If you want to buy a pool membership this year, you can stop by the park office on Thursdays or Fridays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., or on Saturdays between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. We are so lucky to have such a great park with so much for kids and families to do. And it’s pretty amazing to think that there is even more potential for it given that there is so much more property than most people see. As you probably know, the Board officially began working with an architectural firm on a master plan for the park that will help us and future Boards to identify and proceed with future developments in the park. This process does not bind us to pursuing the projects, but provides a blueprint and proposes ideal placement for possible future additions of things like a sports field, dog park, and many others, even the potential new clubhouse. At the time of this writing, we are planning to present a first-pass of the plan at the April 4 Board meeting, where we will gather public input on it. Once the master plan is finished in the coming weeks, we will move forward in earnest with an architectural plan and cost estimate for the new clubhouse, as was approved by residents in the vote last year, and it will also be presented to the public. We have also begun receiving bids on an improved security camera system and park lighting, so we will make that information available as well once we have it in place. Thanks to Terri Edwards who leads the Landscaping Committee, which has identified and undertaken some projects, including planting some new (future) shade trees by the walking trail at the back of the park, and landscaping around the new bathroom facility. Terri and her group have more projects identified and in the cue, although they are in a slight holding pattern until we complete the master plan, that way we can be sure that their efforts are in line with the overall plan. Another big issue affecting our neighborhood this spring is Comal ISD’s bond vote that would include funding for a high school in our area. The bond vote is scheduled for May 6. Our neighborhood is great in so many ways, but if there’s one major disadvantage, it’s proximity to the middle and high schools. Spring Branch Middle School is about 13 miles from Timberwood Park, and Smithson Valley is about 15 miles. In addition to the distance, the tremendous growth in this area is leading to overcrowding in the schools. If you have driven down Borgfeld in recent months, you have probably noticed construction underway for the middle school that was approved by CISD voters in May 2015. The current bond package includes a high school that would be located adjacent to that middle school, and according to CISD officials, it and the other projects in the bond package would be done without a tax increase. There is additional information in this newsletter about the bond and we will be providing more information as the vote nears. You can also visit the Comal ISD website at www.comalisd.org and click the “Bond 2017” icon for more information on the bond. So I encourage you to get out and vote on May 6!
The Clubhouse is open to property owners and their guests. Thursday through Sunday, from 9:00AM to 9:00PM. The Clubhouse is closed on Mondays for cleaning. Upcoming Vote to Build a Timberwood Park High School By Marty Bartlett, Comal ISD School Board Member
We have a big opportunity coming up, but we really need your help. We have an upcoming School Bond election starting on April 24 with the final vote occurring on May 6. If we can pass this school bond (which will include no tax increases) we will finally be able to build a high school right next to Timberwood Park. Can you just imagine driving 5 minutes to take your child to school instead of 30 minutes? The high school being built in our area will be on Borgfeld Road, near Bulverde Road, adjacent to the middle school currently under construction. They will share a common football stadium, athletic complex, and practice fields. If this bond passes, our new high school could open in 2021.
As you can see, without additional schools being built, the overcrowding will make it difficult for Comal ISD to continue to deliver the high level of education we have come to expect. At a recent meeting the Comal ISD trustees approved a $263.5 million bond package that will go before voters very soon. This bond package will build a new 2,500 student Timberwood Park High School, to relieve crowding at Smithson Valley. It will also build a 1,500 student high school in Garden Ridge to relieve Canyon High School overcrowding. The bond also includes funds for purchasing land for future schools, purchasing much needed buses, and designing a new elementary school without taxes going up. The new growth in the area will create additional tax values which will pay for the bond without impacting the taxes of any current resident.
If you have been looking around lately you have seen enormous growth occurring in our area. Here are some interesting facts presented by a demographics expert at our last school board meeting:
Even with what seems like a logical YES vote for the new schools, some people in other parts of the district will still oppose it (because they already have schools close to them). Our turnout in the last bond election was only 11% of the eligible voters. For us to vote to build our new high school, we will need to do better than that. Please encourage all of your neighbors and friends to go out and vote in favor of the bond in this upcoming election. Early voting (the best time to vote) will run from April 24 to May 2, with the final election day on May 6.
• Comal ISD closed more than 1,600 new homes in 2016. • Comal ISD added more than 1,000 students this fall. • Comal ISD can expect an increase of 5,600 students during the next 5 years. • 2021/22 enrollment projection (when the high schools could open) is 27,804 students. • Comal ISD is projected to have more than 34,200 students for the 2026/27 school year. • Comal ISD is currently utilizing 99% of its total high school capacity.

Timberwood Park Turns 40 This summer marks Timberwood Park’s 40th birthday! The San Antonio Light Newspaper announced the Timberwood Park Grand Opening, Saturday, July 9, 1977 on the front page of their Home Guide section. The announcement describes the selling points of Timberwood Park that mirror many of the positive qualities that continue to appeal to residents today. Excerpts from the 1977 article include: “Timberwood Park is now celebrating its Grand Opening, and there is no better time than now to see this beautiful new subdivision that all San Antonio is talking about!” “The combination of trees and views make this incredibly beautiful property, and it makes selecting a site in Timberwood Park exciting!” “The hilltop breezes, the views, the stately old oak trees, the people involved, and a sort of anxiety of great things to come that is present because the edition is so new …” Our beautiful Timberwood Park continues to get better with age. It is difficult to imagine Timberwood Park in 1977 as a new subdivision without all the beautiful homes, yet the article correctly envisioned that “Timberwood Park has all the elements to be the most beautiful and prestigious development in Bexar County.” A copy of the complete article is posted in the clubhouse for viewing. After more than a 5 year process to complete, The Texas Historical Commission (THC) recently approved and designated GERFERS CEMETERY as a Historic Texas Cemetery. The distinction means the cemetery has been legally recorded through the THC’s Cemetery Preservation Program, an important step in ensuring its preservation.
Park Development when Timberwood Development Company purchased a portion of the ranch land which included the cemetery to develop it into home sites. Gerfers Cemetery is located off Galliard in our development but is currently not accessible to the public. At this time, there are 21 visible gravesites within the cemetery, the oldest being from 1877 and the most recent dating to 1922. Many of the gravesites are of the Gerfer family, thus the name of the cemetery. The property on which it sits is currently owned by Timberwood Park Owners Association as a part of the common areas of the development.
Gerfers Cemetery is thought to originally be part of what was once known as the Old Panther Springs Ranch, a vast area of undeveloped Northern Bexar County, prior to eventually becoming part of the Timberwood
What is the HTC designation? Begun in 1998, the HTC designation is an official recognition of family and community graveyards that encourages preservation of historic cemeteries. The designation imposes no restrictions on private owners’ use of the land adjacent to the cemetery or the daily operations of the cemetery. Every county in Texas has at least one cemetery designated as a Historic Texas Cemetery through this process. (Continued on page 9)

The designation is reserved for cemeteries that are at least 50 years old and documented through the Historic Texas Cemetery designation process to record their historic association and significance. The very nature of a cemetery as a landmark of a family’s or community’s presence is considered to validate the criteria of historical associations. “Cemeteries are important keys in the history of Texas. Designation as a Historic Texas Cemetery helps increase public awareness of these important cultural resources,” said Mark Wolfe, executive director of the THC. “Knowledge and education are among the best ways to guarantee the preservation of a historic cemetery.” By accomplishing this designation, Gerfers Cemetery becomes a recorded part of history in this area and this helps preserve the cemetery by alerting present and future landowners of the presence of this important historical resource within their community. Cemeteries hold valuable historic information, are important keys to Texas’ past, and are often the last reminders of early settlements’ historical events, religious beliefs, lifestyles, and genealogy. While the Historic Texas Cemetery designation encourages cemetery preservation, it cannot guarantee that
a historic cemetery will avoid destruction. Threats to historic cemeteries include urban expansion and development, vandalism, grazing animals and longterm deterioration from weather and uncontrolled vegetation. The THC developed the Historic Texas Cemetery designation to address the destruction of historic cemeteries and the illegal removal of cemetery fixtures.

I. Introduction The safety and enjoyment of the members of the community are of primary concern in the operation of our pool. We expect all pool users to show courtesy and consideration for others in the use of the pool and cooperate with the lifeguards/managing agents in their daily management of the pool. We appreciate your cooperation with their directives or requests regarding safety. Please abide by the rules and guidelines, and curtail any activity that interferes with the swimming enjoyment of others.

III. Pool Use, Fees, Guest Policy, and User Responsibility a. Use of the pool is restricted to the Timberwood Park property owners who pay the membership fee and whose Association assessment fees are current. b. The maximum occupancy of the swimming pool and surrounding area is 185 people. c. Use of the pool is a privilege subject to revocation upon violation of these rules as determined by the TPOA Board of Directors. Violation of these rules, as well as any other dangerous, unsafe, or objectionable behavior shall be reported to the TPOA Board, Spectrum, and employees. d. An annual fee will be charged to property owners and residents who wish to be pool members for the season as follows (includes activation to both amenity cards): • Single Membership $160 • Family Membership $200 • Swim Team Membership $100 for duration of swim team season and REQUIRED to join team (cards deactivated July 1) • Half-season family membership $125 (July 1– end of season) • Half-season individual membership $100 (July 1– end of season)

II. Swim at Your Own Risk/Season/Hours/Lifeguards/ Managing Agents The pool is available for swimming at your own risk by means of a pool access card throughout the pool season, after an association member has signed a pool waiver and agreed to the rules. a. It is the responsibility of the person(s) using the pool to secure the access gate while using the pool and upon departure. b. It is also the responsibility of anyone using the pool to not allow anyone who does not have an active pool card in their possession to enter the pool area. c. Pool Season is April 14 to October 18. Pool closing date is subject to change due to weather. d. Pool Hours are 6:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The pool is closed on Mondays for maintenance; if a holiday falls on a Monday, the pool will be closed the following day (Tuesday). Pool entrance cards do not allow access after or before pool hours. e. The presence of the lifeguards/managing agents at the pool is neither an implicit or explicit guarantee of the safety of any pool user at any time. Lifeguards will be on duty during peak hours as determined by the TPOA Board of Directors. Peak hours are defined as 11:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday during the summer season, June 2 through August 24.

Those with groups of 25 or more will be required to pay a $100 per 25 guests to cover additional lifeguards necessary, in addition to $3 per guest. Parties of 10 or more attempting to enter without prior notice will be turned away. The pool cannot be closed for private parties; it must remain available for all pool members during open hours. IV. Pool Conduct a. Lifeguards/managing agents are in charge of the pool at all times. Their primary function is to keep the pool safe for all users by enforcing pool rules. It is at their discretion to apply safeguards that are not addressed in these rules in order to maintain a safe experience for all pool users. Pool members must adhere to the following rules: i. Items/behaviors not permitted in the pool area: 1. Smoking–please smoke near covered patio 2. Running or excessive horseplay 3. Foul/vulgar language, excessive noise, and radios 4. Balloons or other items that could clog pumps 5. Pets (except service animals) 6. Glass items 7. Public consumption of alcohol 8. Roller/in-line skates, scooters, skateboards, or bicycles 9. Employees on-site are only doing their job and enforcing rules they’ve been assigned. ○○ Please report any damage or vandalism to the pool and surrounding area immediately to employees or Spectrum so the problem can be resolved in a timely manner and to reduce potential safety hazards to others.

• All members and guests using the pool must dispose of all trash, including leftover food items, in trash cans provided in the pool area. • Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult (18+ years). • Children 13–17 may swim without an accompanying adult only when a lifeguard is present. • Under all circumstances, the pool is swim at your own risk. • Pool users must be properly attired in swimwear. No cut-off pants are permitted in the pool. All children under age 3 must wear a swim diaper (provided for $2 if needed). • Long hair must be tied up or in a swim cap. • Safety equipment is to be used only in the event of an emergency. • Any person who, in the sole judgement of the employee, appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be excluded from the pool area. • Pool games allowed at the discretion of the lifeguards and on a non-interference basis with other members. • The pool closes for 30 minutes any time an employee hears thunder or sees lightning. Each new incident resets the timer until reopening. Please be patient during these times, as our primary concern is your safety. • Only swimmers of adequate ability may use the diving

Timberwood Park Tiburones Summer Swim Team Registration Fast Approaching! It’s almost time to sign your swimmer up for another fun-filled season! We have a new website with online registration this year. Registration will open on April 15th for returning swimmers and April 20th for new swimmers. Requirements: The 2017 registration fee is $110 per participant; each additional family member is $105. Credit card payment will be taken during the registration process. Registration will include a team t-shirt for each swimmer. Additional expenses may include a team suit and swim cap. Parents must volunteer for at least 2 meets during the season. 3 Backyard Projects You Can Tackle in a Weekend (BPT) - Now that warmer weather has finally arrived, you
want to be outside to enjoy it. Your backyard could be the perfect place to bask in the sun, entertain friends or indulge in your hobbies. It just needs a little sprucing up, and the right projects can help. Best of all, many of these projects are quick and easy. To get you started, here are three projects you can accomplish in a spring weekend - and enjoy all summer long. Forging a fire pit Whether it’s an afternoon gathering or an evening under the stars, adding a fire pit to your backyard is a great way to make an enjoyable get-together last even longer. And building one is easier than you think.
Spray a circle around the center, outlining your pit’s desired circumference - say 5 feet. Dig this space to a depth of 6 inches. In your newfound pit, make a similar circle 12 inches in from your outer circle to make the inner wall of your pit. Fill this area with small stones to serve as the foundation, and lay wet concrete on the ground to solidify and build that foundation. If you do not have the tools you need to successfully make concrete, you can always rent them to eliminate the need for a one-time purchase. Once the foundation is ready, apply mortar and stones around the ring. Build up the fire pit wall with additional mortar and stones. After the pit has been built to a height of your choosing, use a brush to remove excess mortar from the inside. You may also spray the inside with a can of spray paint to give your pit’s interior a uniform look. Planning the planters If you’ve always wanted to add a pop of color to your backyard, planter boxes can be just the ticket. They are relatively simple to build yourself.

been ignoring for years. Fortunately, something as small as a new coat of paint can have a large impact on your shed’s appearance.
Start by choosing a wood, like cedar, for your project. Cut four strips with two half the length of your other two, but sharing the same height. These strips will form the foundation of your rectangular planter.
Before applying a drop of paint, inspect the shed to be sure no structural maintenance is needed. Then it’s time to clean it. Rent a pressure washer for a quick clean that will free the building of dirt, debris and cobwebs.
Once your strips are cut, butt the ends together and apply wood glue at the joints to secure the fit. Drill a screw into each end to solidify the fit. Next, attach the bottom panels with glue and drill a screw through the ends of the bottom panels into the sides for a more secure fit.
Once the shed is clean and dry, apply an oil-based primer, which will help protect the building from the elements and make it easier to paint.
Finish by lightly sanding any rough or unseemly spaces on the foundations. Add a touch of paint or stain to improve the planter’s appearance and offer long-term protection.
Finally, it’s time to paint. A long-nap roller works well for this project, but you can also use a paint sprayer. Choose a color to your liking and be sure to select a paint designed for outdoor projects.
