LETTER LETTER FROM FROM THE THE PRESIDENT PRESIDENT In recent weeks the Board was very pleased to complete the Park Master Plan effort that we have been discussing for a few years now. In addition to presenting it at the June 6 TPOA Board meeting, we will have a rendering in the next newsletter, and it will be posted in the clubhouse. As you will see, it includes all of the amenities that have been proposed and discussed in recent years, and all of them are represented according to scale, and take in to account the park’s elevation, topography, spacing and other considerations. While it will be years before the plan is completed, it provides a great blueprint for planning going forward. And it is open to change depending on what future boards and the community would like to do.
a high school much closer to our neighborhood. The bond passed by an overwhelming majority, and Timberwood had an outstanding turnout at the polls compared to other voting locations. What a big win for our community’s school kids and their families who in a few years will no longer have to travel so far to go to Spring Branch Middle School and Smithson Valley High School. Obviously the biggest project on the master plan is the clubhouse, and we have begun working in earnest with the architect on planning efforts. We hope to have a plan, cost, and other important information to present to the community soon by way of community meetings and this newsletter, and of course once we have all of that there will be a community vote held to determine whether we officially move forward with the project. And happy 40th birthday to Timberwood Park! What a unique and fun neighborhood we have, and I hope you and your families have a chance to take part in some or all of the activities at our annual Picnic in the Park on July 8, which will also include a 40th birthday celebration. Picnic in the park will once again be full of events throughout the day, including competitions, kids’ activities, a nighttime concert to wrap up the day, and much more. Nowhere else but Timberwood Park! Lastly, thanks to all of you who supported and voted for the Comal ISD bond package that will finally bring

To have a safe and fun vacation whether at home or on the road, consider the following tips: Before Leaving • Inform your neighbors how long you expect to be away. Inform them if you will have a house sitter. • Have a friend or neighbor pick up mail and/or deliveries. Make arrangements to have the lawn mowed and leaves picked up. Or Stop the mail & papers!! • Simulate a “lived-in” appearance by using timers to run lights and a radio on and off during expected hours. • Secure Storage Sheds, attic entrances, & gates. Consider placing valuables in a bank safe deposit box • Make Sure to lock the garage door & disable the garage door opener. (Thieves can gain entry to your house by using a scanner-like device to crack the code on your automatic door opener.) • Jam a broom stick or rod into in the track of all sliding doors. • Test your smoke & burglar alarms. Car Rental and Security • When renting a car, pick one whose operations you are familiar with. If not, take time to see where the lights, brakes, turn signals, windshield wipers, and spare tire are and how they work. • Don’t rent a car at night. Stay in the hotel and rent it in the morning. • Always lock your car when entering or leaving it. • Park in well-lighted, busy areas and check the vehicle’s interior and surrounding area before entering. • Always lock valuables out of sight. Always carry wallets, checkbooks, and purses with you. • Do not advertise that you are a tourist. Place maps and travel brochures in the glove compartment. • If you do become lost, drive to a public place to check the map. Don’t stop along a street or the highway.
• When you leave your room, close up your suitcase. • Suitcases should always be locked so they cannot be used to carry your property out of your room. • Never leave money, checks, credit cards or car keys in the room. Take them with you. • Place extra cash, expensive jewelry or other valuables (furs, gems, gold, or silver) in the hotel/motel safe. • Report any lost or stolen items to the hotel/motel management and to the police. • Report to the management any suspicious movements in the corridors or rooms. And by all means, make sure your kids know not to accept rides or favors from strangers.
Sightseeing • Remember the name and address of the hotel/motel where you are staying. Take a business card or a book of matches with the name of the hotel/motel. • Ask for directions at a hotel/motel to get to those attractions you want to visit. • Ask if there are any areas of town to avoid. • Select your guides carefully. • Stick to well-lighted main streets and public areas. • Only carry with you the cash you will need, and only in small denominations. Hotel and Motel Security • Determine the most direct route to and from your room, to the fire escapes, elevators, and nearest phone. • When occupying or leaving your room, use all auxiliary locking devices on doors and windows. • Identify anyone requesting entry to your room. Open the door only if you are certain that the person has a legitimate reason to enter your room. If in doubt, call the hotel/motel office. • Unpack and place belongings in the closet and dresser. Arrange your things so you’ll know if anything is missing.

Drowning Doesn’t Look Like Drowning always a deceptively quiet event. The waving, splashing, and yelling that dramatic conditioning (television) prepares us to look for, is rarely seen in real life. The Instinctive Drowning Response – so named by Francesco A. Pia, Ph.D., is what people do to avoid actual or perceived suffocation in the water. And it does not look like most people expect. There is very little splashing, no waving, and no yelling or calls for help of any kind. To get an idea of just how quiet and undramatic from the surface drowning can be, consider this: It is the number two cause of accidental death in children, age 15 and under (just behind vehicle accidents) – of the approximately 750 children who will drown next year, about 375 of them will do so within 25 yards of a parent or other adult. In ten percent of those drownings, the adult will actually watch them do it, having no idea it is happening (source: CDC). Drowning does not look like drowning – Dr. Pia, in an article in the Coast Guard’s
Drowning? Not likely. The new captain jumped from the cockpit, fully dressed, and sprinted through the water. A former lifeguard, he kept his eyes on his victim as he headed straight for the owners who were swimming between their anchored sportfisher and the beach. “I think he thinks you’re drowning,” the husband said to his wife. They had been splashing each other and she had screamed but now they were just standing, neck-deep on the sand bar. “We’re fine, what is he doing?” she asked, a little annoyed. “We’re fine!” the husband yelled, waving him off, but his captain kept swimming hard. ”Move!” he barked as he sprinted between the stunned owners. Directly behind them, not ten feet away, their nine-year-old daughter was drowning. Safely above the surface in the arms of the captain, she burst into tears, “Daddy!”

How did this captain know, from fifty feet away, what the father couldn’t recognize from just ten? Drowning is not the violent, splashing, call for help that most people expect. The captain was trained to recognize drowning by experts and years of experience. The father, on the other hand, had learned what drowning looks like by watching television. If you spend time on or near the water (hint: that’s all of us) then you should make sure that you and your crew knows what to look for whenever people enter the water. Until she cried a tearful, “Daddy,” she hadn’t made a sound. As a former Coast Guard rescue swimmer, I wasn’t surprised at all by this story. Drowning is almost

1. Except in rare circumstances, drowning people are physiologically unable to call out for help. The respiratory system was designed for breathing. Speech is the secondary or overlaid function. Breathing must be fulfilled, before speech occurs. 2. Drowning people’s mouths alternately sink below and reappear above the surface of the water. The mouths of drowning people are not above the surface of the water long enough for them to exhale, inhale, and call out for help. When the drowning people’s mouths are above the surface, they exhale and inhale quickly as their mouths start to sink below the surface of the water. 3. Drowning people cannot wave for help. Nature instinctively forces them to extend their arms laterally and press down on the water’s surface. Pressing down on the surface of the water, permits drowning people to leverage their bodies so they can lift their mouths out of the water to breathe. 4. Throughout the Instinctive Drowning Response, drowning people cannot voluntarily control their arm movements. Physiologically, drowning people who are struggling on the surface of the water cannot stop drowning and perform voluntary movements such as waving for help, moving toward a rescuer, or reaching out for a piece of rescue equipment. 5. From beginning to end of the Instinctive Drowning Response people’s bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued by a trained lifeguard, these drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water from 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs. 6. This doesn’t mean that a person that is yelling for help and thrashing isn’t in real trouble – they are experiencing aquatic distress. Not always present before the instinctive drowning response, aquatic distress doesn’t last long – but unlike true drowning, these victims can still assist in their own rescue. They

So if a crew member falls overboard and everything looks O.K. – don’t be too sure. Sometimes the most common indication that someone is drowning is that they don’t look like they’re drowning. They may just look like they are treading water and looking up at the deck. One way to be sure is to ask them: “Are you alright?” If they can answer at all – they probably are. If they return a blank stare – you may have less than 30 seconds to get to them. And parents: children playing in the water make noise. When they get quiet, you get to them and find out why.

Tips to Prevent Mosquito Bites
Use Structural Barriers • Cover all gaps in walls, doors, and windows to prevent mosquitoes from entering.
Using the right insect repellent and other preventive actions can discourage mosquitoes, ticks and other biting insects from landing on you. Here are tips for other preventive actions you can take against mosquitoes.
• Completely cover baby carriers and beds with netting.
Remove Mosquito Habitats • Eliminate standing water in rain gutters, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed. • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and potted plant trays at least once a week to destroy potential mosquito habitats. • Drain or fill temporary pools of water with dirt. • Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating. Use Appropriate Pesticides • Control mosquito larvae using the appropriate methods for the habitat • Control adult mosquitoes using insecticides.
• Make sure window and door screens are in good working order.
Avoid Getting Bitten • Keep mosquitoes away from exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and socks. • Tuck shirts into pants and pants into socks to cover gaps in your clothing where mosquitoes can get to your skin. • Stay indoors when possible, especially if there is a mosquito-borne disease warning in effect. • Use EPA-registered mosquito repellents when necessary and follow label directions and precautions closely. • Use head nets, long sleeves and long pants if you venture into areas with high mosquito populations, such as salt marshes. • Replace your outdoor lights with yellow “bug” lights, which tend to attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights. Keeping Trinity Aquifer Water Free from Pollution
“In order to protect the Edwards and Trinity Aquifers from pollution, the State of Texas has enacted regulations for any development that happens on the Recharge and Contributing Zones,” said George Wissmann, Trinity Glen Rose Groundwater Conservation District general manager. “The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is responsible for the Edwards Aquifer Protection Program and reviewing all development plans in these environmentally sensitive areas.”

ost people living in the San Antonio area know that the Edwards Aquifer is the primary source of drinking water source for the City and surrounding communities. But most people do not know that in northern Bexar County, you will find the Trinity Glen Rose Aquifer is being used to provide water to homes and businesses as well. So, what’s the connection?
While the TCEQ rules are designed primarily to protect the Edwards Aquifer, that protection naturally extends to the Trinity Aquifer in northern Bexar County for the geological proximity of the two aquifers. The regulations address abandoned wells, above and below ground storage tanks, construction practices, various types of businesses that can operate in these areas, transportation of chemicals across the area and much more.
Actually, there is a major connection. As geologists have found, the Edwards Aquifer is significantly recharged by water from the Trinity Aquifer. As rainwater flows across the Contributing Zone of the Edwards Aquifer, that water enters the Trinity Aquifer and then the Edwards. Both aquifers have what are called “karst features,” which means there are fractures, caves, sinking streams, and sinkholes which act as conduits for water to flow into the aquifer from the surface. While this type of recharge is great for the aquifers, it also means that any surface pollution from stormwater runoff or pollutant spills will directly impact the water quality of the aquifer,
“Pollution prevention is an important part of the TGR mission,” Wissmann noted. “And so we stay up to date on new legislation, continuing studies of the two aquifers and development we see happening in the District. While it might be obvious that water quality is of utmost importance, there is a lot of territory to monitor. Pollution prevention is one of the topics we want to address more fully with people living in the TGR District, because we all play a part in keeping our water safe to use.”

Snakes: Friend or Foe? By Lora Reynolds, Special to Neighborhood News
If you’re like most people, your heart stops momentarily and you emit a yelp when you see a snake slither across your patio. Chances are high that the reptile is harmless, in fact beneficial, to you and your yard. Snakes dine on rodents and insects, thereby reducing the number of pests on your property.
Three types of venomous snakes are known as “pit vipers” because they have indentations, or pits, near their nostrils that they use for sensing heat. Pit vipers include rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. The most common rattler in this area is the Western Diamondback, which averages 3-4 ft. in length, with brown markings in the shape of diamonds on its back and black and white bands around the tail. Copperheads are light orange brown with rust-colored markings encircling their bodies. Adult copperheads are about 2 ft. long. Cottonmouths have wide, dark greenish brown bodies and may have dark bands of color. They are 3.5 ft. long and are found in streams, rivers, ponds, marshes—they seldom travel far from water. They are typically the most aggressive Texas snake species.
Harmless snakes should be allowed to go about their daily lives without being injured, killed, or relocated by the homeowner. Diversity of species is important to ecological balance. Imagine the scenario when the predators are gone due to habitat destruction or eradication by man and only the “pests” remain. In Texas, we have about 110 species and subspecies of snakes, with four species being venomous: rattler, copperhead, coral, and cottonmouth (also called water moccasin). On average, two to three accidental deaths a year in Texas are attributed to snake bite. Fatal bee stings and lightning strikes pose much greater risks. In total, poisonous snakes account for just 15% of all snakes in Texas, according to Texas Parks and Wildlife.
Coral snakes are mainly found in Southeast Texas and are under 3 ft. long. They have a wide black band, a thin yellow band, and a wide red band. If the red and yellow bands are touching, you can be pretty sure it’s a coral snake and not one of the harmless species of snake with similar colors.
Most snakes do not want to interact with people, and normally won’t attack. A snake on the run is likely trying to get away from humans and find a place to hide. Knowledge of the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes is important. As always when interacting with wildlife, use common sense and caution. When you see a snake, don’t get too close, and don’t do anything to disturb it. The biggest threat of being bitten by snakes is accidentally stepping on them, so watch where you’re walking.

If you see a snake in your yard and can’t identify it, try to determine what it is by checking resources online. Texas Parks and Wildlife and other organizations have photos of many snakes on their web sites, which can be found by using a search engine such as Google and typing “Texas Snakes.” A good field guide will also have photos and information to help you identify snakes. Just because a snake has unusual or colorful markings does not mean it is poisonous.

Days During drought restrictions, the last number of your street address determines your watering day. If your sprinklers come on the wrong day, there are two possibilities: either (1) power has been lost, and the correct time and day needs to be reset, or (2) one of the active programs (see below) has an extra active day.
Don’t wait for your next four-figure water bill to tune up your sprinkler system’s timer. A quick irrigation audit will often reveal common problems that are easily solved. Your irrigation controller may regulate the sprinkler system, but even when set correctly, it may use 1,500 gallons or more every time it runs. That’s more than a single person uses in a month! After all, many sprinklers run at 30 gallons per minute. Unfortunately, controllers are rife with hidden programming and settings, especially after years of hanging on the wall; a badly programmed controller can swiftly drain your wallet, in addition to drowning your plants. Don’t wait for your next four-figure water bill to get a handle on the situation. A quick irrigation audit will often reveal common problems that are easily solved. Most irrigation controllers use the same basic tools: programs, days, run times and start times.
Start times The most misused feature of the controller is often the start time. You don’t need a start time for every zone! On most controllers, one start time initiates the entire program, running every single zone in succession starting at whatever hour you designate. In San Antonio, drought restrictions mandate start times beginning at either 7 a.m. (until 11 a.m.) or 7 p.m. (until 11 p.m.) for sprinklers. It’s not uncommon to see a “1st” start time at 7 a.m., a “2nd” start time (Continued on page 17)

OFF, a “3rd” start time “OFF,” etc. In the scorching months of July and August, some customers will use a “1st” start time at 7 a.m. and a “2nd” start time at 7 p.m. for a morning and an evening run -- but remember, adding a single start time effectively doubles your water bill. If you use multiple start times, it’s better to use them for single zones, where needed, rather than for the whole program. Occasionally, splitting the total program into two start times may be beneficial for steep slopes. For example, if a zone needs to run for 15 minutes but starts running into the street before it’s finished, it’s not a bad idea to just reduce the total run time to seven minutes and provide a second start time instead, to allow the irrigation to cycle and soak. Run times For pop-up sprayers in our clay soils, the recommended setting for proper coverage is eight to 20 minutes, depending on the plant material and whether the zone is in sun or shade. For rotor heads, 25-30 minutes is recommended. Multi-stream rotators are often set a bit longer. Programs For most residential landscapes, a single program (A, B or C) is sufficient. The rest should be off with days and times zeroed out. Note: Check all programs to make sure no extras are lurking. W H AT ’ S · C O O K I N G Grilled Skirt Steak with Charred Corn Salad Ingredients: • 1 skirt steak • Kosher salt • pepper • 2 ear corn • 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice • 2 tbsp. olive oil • ½ small red onion • 2 small avocados • 1 c. fresh cilantro leaves • 8 small flour tortillas
2. Place the corn on the grill along with the steak and grill, turning occasionally, until charred, about 3 minutes. Transfer the corn to a cutting board and remove the kernels from the cobs.
Directions: 1. Heat grill to medium-high. Season the steak with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper and grill to desired doneness, 3 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare. Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing.
3. In a large bowl, whisk together the lime juice, oil, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Add the corn and onion and toss to combine, then fold in the avocados and cilantro. 4. Warm the tortillas on the grill. Serve with the steak, corn salad, and lime wedges, if desired.
