LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Greetings fellow residents, 2017 looks to be an exciting year for Timberwood Park. There are many great social events planned for this year and a few that deserve mentioning. The 3rd Annual Timberwood Park Barbeque Cook-off is a relatively new event that grows every year. The first year, the event attracted 15 participants, and the second year brought 25 pit masters. This year plans to be an all day event, with competitive cooking, judging, and a Music in the Park event that evening to round out the day. The 4th of July event is also a great family event with fun and games for all ages, including a golfing tournament, washers tournament, and hopefully this year, a fishing tournament for all ages. The park is looking better than ever. The borders and mulch have been completed around the new swing set and the kiddie play area, some new trees have been planted, and other trees have been trimmed back. The Landscaping Committee has met and planned a few more landscaping projects for this year. The Board is working with a firm to obtain a master plan for the park. The plan will hopefully be completed within a few months. The Board will share the plan with residents at future board meetings and will share the information in the newsletter. Anticipated up and coming projects for the park include additional security cameras with a possible upgrade of the system, and a lighting project for the area around the lake. More details of these projects will be shared with residents as the discussion progresses. The COP’s or “Citizens On Patrol” group is gearing up this year and hopes to recruit more residents to join the program. If you are interested in joining this group, you can contact the Neighborhood Watch Chairperson, Paul Rutkowski, at paul.rski68@gmail.com. The Architectural Control Committee had a busy year in 2016. There were 49 new home construction projects and 253 home improvement projects approved. Thank you to the volunteers who participate in the COPS program and the folks on the ACC. Clubhouse and Fitness Center Hours
Important Fitness Center Rule Reminder:
The Clubhouse is open to property owners and their guests. Thursday through Sunday, from 9:00AM to 9:00PM. The Clubhouse is closed on Mondays for cleaning.
This is a reminder that there are age requirements for use of the equipment in the fitness center.
You Must Be Of Age To Use Gym Equipment
t Nobody under the age of 16 is allowed to use the equipment unsupervised. t Youth ages 12-15 may use the equipment if they are under the direct supervision of an adult who is at least 18 years old.
Fitness Center Hours: Monday: 12:00PM- 9:30PM Tuesday-Sunday: 5:30AM - 9:30PM The Fitness Center is closed on Monday until 12:00PM for equipment maintenance and cleaning.
t The equipment may not be used by anybody under the age of 12. While the park and clubhouse are a great place for kids to gather and play, the fitness center is simply not one of them. The primary concern is for the safety of the kids as the weight and cardio equipment can present a significant injury risk. The secondary concern is for the safety of the equipment. There have been unfortunate instances where gym equipment has been damaged by youth who should not have been in the gym in the first place, and repairing this equipment is quite costly to TPOA.
To reserve the clubhouse, please contact the onsite office Thursday & Friday from 3-7 PM, Saturday from 9 AM - 1 PM at 830-980-3349.
Based on the risk of personal injury or damage to equipment, this is a strict policy, and violation of this policy can lead to suspension of park privileges. So if you have kids under age 16 who spend time at the park, please remind them to keep out of the fitness center. They are allowed to use the restrooms, but they must stay clear of all of the equipment, and they cannot gather in the fitness center or spend time in the center, beyond the time it takes for them to use the restroom. If you witness any kids in the gym on or around the equipment, please remind them of the policy and ask them to leave, or alert one of the park caretakers so that they can do so. And if you witness a youth or anybody else causing damage to the equipment, it is especially important that you alert park personnel, and that somebody gets the names of the culprits so that they can be held accountable. The fitness center also has cameras in place that can help in that effort.
If you are a high school student looking for community service volunteer hours or project opportunities, TWP has numerous opportunities awaiting you! TPOA Memorial Tree Program The Memorial Tree Program lets you remember a loved one in a very special way by planting a tree in his or her honor at Timberwood Park recreational area. Your loved one will not only be remembered, but you will be helping your community at the same time. You will work with the TWP personnel in selecting a species of tree and an acceptable location site where the tree will be planted. Trees will be 45 gallon sized and planted professionally. Things to be considered will be: t Proper growing space available for newly planted tree in the park t Species diversity Suggested list includes Mexican White Oak (aka Monterrey Oak), Chinkapin Oak, Shumard Red Oak, Live Oak, Cedar Elm, Mexican or Texas Sycamore, Arizona or Bald Cypress, Lacey Oak, Big tooth Maple, Bur Oak. All of these are recommended for Bexar County soil and weather conditions. Memorial trees will then be planted at the next desirable planting time (early fall or early spring) and maintained by the maintenance personnel at park. Once the tree is planted, the donor will be notified of the location of the tree and will be recognized at the next scheduled TPOA Board meeting with mention in the Timberwood News. In addition, you and your family will receive a complimentary family pass for the upcoming swimming season at TWP Pool. To start the Memorial Tree planting process, you will need to complete the following information and submit with check for $500 payable to TPOA at the TWP office (during office hours) next to pool or mail to TPOA, c/o Spectrum Association Management, 17319 San Pedro Ave. Suite 318, San Antonio, TX 78232.

5 Tough Texas Natives To Hold Your Garden Together Year-Round By Heather Ginsburg
Do you have an area in your garden that looks like a disaster because all of your perennials froze back and now it is an empty mess? Planting Texas native evergreen plants in key areas of your garden will hold it together year-round. Winter is a perfect time to assess your current landscape and determine where you need more structure. This is because in the winter you can see easily where the flimsy weak areas are where you need more garden bones. Look around your yard, where could you use evergreen structure to carry your garden through every season? Where is your garden lacking a focal point? Backbone plants make for an attractive landscape and provide depth and texture year-round, setting up other plants to look their best when it is their season to shine. 5 tough Texas Native Plants you can plant for evergreen bones/structure are: Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora) Multi-trunked evergreen small tree or shrub valued for its easy care and grape bubblegum smelling flowers in early spring. Every yard needs at least one. Spineless Prickly Pear (Opuntia ellisiana) Light-colored prickly pear that provides evergreen interest without sharp spines. Beautiful greeny-blue color that contrasts nicely with yellow flowers in the spring and dark redish-purple fruits in the fall. Blue Agave (Agave americana L.) Icy blue, very large Agave to anchor a large area in your garden providing a focal point. Take care not to plant near foot traffic – set back from all sidewalks, driveways, etc. Big Bend Yucca (Yucca thompsoniana (formerly Y. rostrata)) Icy bluey-green strappy foliage that is well-behaved on a trunking yucca makes this plant a must if you would like to add tough, evergreen, vertical interest to your garden. Make sure you have sharp drainage and DO NOT irrigate this plant (unless you want to kill it). Cenizo (Leucophyllum frutescens) Beautiful and TOUGH quintessential evergreen Texas shrub for areas of your yard you do not want to water, or your hose does not reach! Bursts into bloom all at once after rain events which is why this plant also goes by the fond name of “Texas barometer-bush.� These garden workhorses are able to withstand extreme weather conditions and, in most cases, sail through these extremes where other plants may struggle or go dormant. San Antonio experiences weather extremes – from a dry, scorching summer to a frigid winter, which often takes its toll on local landscapes. But the landscapes that fare best, by far, are those with a good backbone that’s heavy on native plants. There is no time like the present to take a long hard look at your landscape and assess it for change. Look for the weak spots and plan ahead now on where you want to plant new evergreen, water-saving, structural choices that require less maintenance.

RESOLVE TO GET GARDENING AND GET HEALTHY By Dana Nichols, SAWS Conservation Manager
It's been said the best way to keep a New Year's resolution is to be specific. Here are a few specific ideas to get started. Idea: Remove 200 square feet of turf to create a garden for butterflies. Result: Burn thousands of calories removing turf and digging holes, as well as mental health knowing you're creating a much needed habitat. Your fitness resolution doesn't require a gym membership. There's an endless supply of exercise to enjoy right in your own backyard! Check out these ideas to help you get started.
Idea: Start a compost pile. Result: Build upper body strength while building the compost bin, plus eliminating the need for synthetic fertilizers and landfill waste.
For the past couple of years, I've suggested New Year's resolutions of reduce, reuse and recycle. I still stand behind them all. But we all know the most common resolution for Americans is to get healthy!
Idea: Use your leaves for mulch. Result: Healthy, happy heart raking up leaves to toss in the compost bin or mowing them twice to let nature compost them for you.
So this time I'm suggesting you combine your fitness resolution with your gardening goals. Get healthy while you get gardening!
Idea: Choose Texas-tough natives that thrive. Result: Eliminate the need for pesticides or fertilizers on your yard this year. Idea: Learn the names of 10 different plants in your yard. Result: More fresh air and exercise by observing and enjoying your garden. Idea: Challenge yourself to take more than 10,000 steps every week in the garden. Result: Realizing the benefits of using Texas native plants, compost and mulch, and saving 10,000 gallons of water each month!

ANNUAL FLU SEASON IS UPON US The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone at least 6 months of age should get a flu vaccine this season. People 65 years and older, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions such as asthma, COPD, diabetes and immunosuppression are at a higher risk of experiencing serious complications after contracting seasonal flu. Because babies under 6 months of age cannot receive the flu vaccine, it is important for their family members to get vaccinated to minimize transmission of the flu virus to the child. Those with a previous history of allergic reaction to the flu vaccines, those with severe egg allergies, and people with a history of GuillainBarre syndrome should not receive the flu shot. Flu Vaccines are generally available from your primary care physician, health clinics and local pharmacies. Remember, good hand hygiene is the best way to prevent the transmission of germs. Wash your hands by scrubbing with soap and clean running water for at least 20 seconds, or use an alcohol based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol.

House Fires Involving Heating Equipment In 2009-2013, heating equipment was involved in an estimated 56,000 reported U.S. home structure fires, with associated losses of 470 civilian deaths, 1,490 civilian injuries, and $1.0 billion in direct property damage. These fires accounted for 16% of all reported home fires. FACTS & FIGURES Based on 2009-2013 annual averages: • Space heaters, whether portable or stationary, accounted for two of every five (40%) of home heating fires and four out of five (84%) of home heating fire deaths. • The leading factor contributing to home heating fires (30%) was failure to clean, principally creosote from solid-fueled heating equipment, primarily chimneys. • Placing things that can burn too close to heating equipment or placing heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mattress, or bedding, was the leading factor contributing to ignition in fatal home heating fires and accounted for more than half (56%) of home heating fire deaths. • Nearly half (49%) of all home heating fires occurred in December, January and February. 5 Tricks to Keep Your Pup Active, Healthy and Happy All Winter Long (BPT) - No matter how hearty and fun-loving your dog is, as a pet parent you know there will come a time when it’s just too cold, snowy, icy, wet or windy for your pup to comfortably exercise outdoors. When the weather outside is frightful and the fire inside delightful, it’s important to find ways to help your dog stay active indoors where it’s safe and warm. PetMd recommends dogs get 30 minutes to two hours of physical activity every day, with the specific amount that’s best for a dog depending on her age, size, breed and overall health. Twice the treat Every dog loves a treat, but just as you’re susceptible to packing on pounds during less active winter months, your pooch can be at risk for weight gain, too. This does not mean no snacks at all, just be sure to work in some exercise and double the enjoyment by making your dog work for a reward. Slip your dog’s favorite treat inside a treat pod or toy and let her figure out how to retrieve the treat from inside it.
Walk in a winter wonderland A dog’s tolerance for cold temperatures depends on many factors, including her size, breed and personal preference. A big dog with lots of hair will probably be better equipped to handle cold better than a small, short-haired pooch, but you know your dog best and you can tell when it’s too cold outside for her. Use common sense; keep your dog (and yourself) off icy roads during walks, and bundle her up in a warm sweater and booties if she needs them. Since evenings and nights are darker in winter, use reflective or glow-in-the-dark collars and leashes. They help make your dog more noticeable in the dark. Brighten Your Yard This Winter With the Help of Wild Birds The basics Just like any other living creature, the survival of birds depends on their ability to find food, water and shelter. But as temperatures drop and winter months approach, the availability of these resources dwindles.

If you’ve never fed wild birds before, winter is the perfect time to get started. Opening up your backyard to birds during the coldest months of the year means you are helping sustain them during a time when food and water are scarce. “The winter months are especially tough on birds,” says Seth Estep, vice president and divisional merchandise manager at Tractor Supply Company. “By providing them with a clean water source and food to eat, you’ll not only enjoy seeing far more of them in your garden, but you’ll also be helping them survive and thrive at a time when their natural resources are being threatened.” If you’re interested in turning your backyard into a hotspot for birds this winter, consider these tips from the experts:

Feed containing suet is especially beneficial because it acts as a substitute for natural fat, which is not only difficult to find during colder months but, upon consumption, provides birds with the calories and energy they need to endure the harsh winter elements.
First, focus on the feeder. But before making your selection, consider where your feeder will be located. For instance, feeders should be positioned approximately 8-10 feet away from shrubbery where predators may hide. They should also be placed in a sheltered area that’s less exposed to harsh weather and strong winds.
The importance of water Finding fresh, unfrozen water can be even more difficult for birds than finding food during winter. One or two bird baths arranged around your yard can help ensure birds have an ample source of water for drinking and bathing which is essential to help them keep their feathers clean for flying.
Inclement weather and pesky predators aren’t the only harrowing threat to birds. A dirty feeder can harbor many deadly illnesses, so you’ll want to get in the habit of regularly scraping off bird droppings and disinfecting the feeding area. Make a quick and easy at-home solution by using one part vinegar and 20 parts water just remember to wait until the feeder is completely dry before refilling.
When temperatures fall below freezing, a birdbath with a built-in heating element can help ensure birds are able to find the water they need. If you already have a birdbath but it doesn’t have a heater, consider buying a drop-in heating element that sits in the bottom of the basin. Another option suggested by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology is to place an incandescent light bulb inside a flowerpot and sit the basin on top of the pot. The heat from the bulb will help keep the water in liquid form.
Types of food When it comes to wild birds, there are many varieties of feed to choose from. To attract a wide array of birds, consider black oil sunflower seed. You can also mix things up by using multiple feeders to serve different types of mixtures and blends, such as black oil sunflower
