LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT I’d like to begin by thanking the many volunteers who helped make our annual Picnic in the Park on July 8 such a big success! It was by far the biggest and best one yet, and many of the events such as the golf tournament, bingo, cake walk, etc., had three and four times as many participants as we’ve had in years past. So there’s no way that it could have been so successful without the dozens of volunteers who gave so much of their time and talent, whether it was planning the different events, decorating, setting up for the different activities and running those activities, cleaning up, etc. And of course Karen O’Neil did her usual amazing job in coordinating everything, which took weeks of her time. This year’s event had a dual purpose as it also celebrated the 40th anniversary of Timberwood Park. In fact, the celebration literally took place on the day or within a day of the 40th anniversary of the Timberwood grand opening celebration. What a vision G.G. Gale had when he developed this neighborhood in what at the time was such an extremely remote part of the city. And anybody who has lived in San Antonio for any amount of time probably heard him on the radio over the decades selling the neighborhood. But 40 years later we are fortunate to have one of the most unique and special neighborhoods to be found anywhere. It was really special that G.G.’s son Jason was on hand at the July 8 celebration for a toast to Timberwood Park’s 40th birthday and to G.G. for his vision and determination that made Timberwood Park possible. Probably the most frequent question that I or any of the other board members get is, “What is up with the clubhouse design?” At the time of this writing, it is further in to the design stage, and in the next couple of months we hope to have drawings, cost estimates, etc. to present to the community, and then have the community vote shortly thereafter. While we want to get this all done as soon as we can, we’re also not in a rush as we want to take as much time as is needed to be sure that it’s all done right, and that it meets the community’s current and future needs. Lastly, it’s hard to believe that the kids will be back in school by the time our next newsletter comes out as August 29 is the official start of school for Comal ISD. I know it goes without saying, but please be mindful of and watchful for the neighborhood kids walking to the bus stops. The bus stop locations typically change from year to year, and beyond the safety risk of passing a stopped school bus, there is a hefty fine for doing so. Picnic in the Park a HUGE Success Thanks to our Awesome Volunteers!
The Clubhouse is open to property owners and their guests, Tuesday through Sunday, from 9:00AM to 9:00PM.
We want to thank our awesome team of volunteers that made it a great day and night of events celebrating July 4th and the 40th birthday of our great hood!
The Clubhouse is closed on Mondays for cleaning.
Nancy Handel, our Bingo Queen, led several volunteers decorating and cleaning up the clubhouse and pavilion, as well as running a packed Bingo with a waiting list! Nancy puts a lot of time and energy into all of that and we are very grateful! Gloria Autrey, Fanita Barkalow and Angie Paul helped make Bingo run smoothly as well as many others! Paula Dimmitt made this the Best Cake Decorating Contest yet with quadruple the number of entries with over 20 cakes! Tracie Kiehne helped run a very popular cake walk again this year, also with record numbers participating!

Our Hot Dog Team of Kathy and Paul Colliander, Phyllis and Archie Summerlin and Tom Marty cooked and gave out 400 hot dogs and chips in an hour! Julia O’Neil, Stephen Barkalow, Lindsay Pattison and Maya McBrayer ran the soda truck and SBMS National Junior Honor Society kids gave out many free snow cones! Our tournaments also had record numbers this year! Huge thanks go to Craig Johnson for running golf, Martha Bartlett on tennis, Shea Posey on free throw contest and Warren Mutz and Luke Kinney for running washers! We are SO grateful for all these volunteers making these tournaments better every year! We ended the night with a great Music in the Park and a toast on stage with Jason Gale to G.G. Gale, who we all have to thank for starting our great neighborhood, full of memories for all our families, for the last 4 decades and many more to come.

History of Timberwood Park and Surrounding Areas Saturday, September 23 Starting at 9:00 a.m. in the TWP Clubhouse Followed with a visit to the Gerfers Cemetery. Light snacks and drinks will be provided. Come and enjoy a presentation of the history of Timberwood Park and surrounding areas. It highlights why our little part of Texas is exceptional. You will learn the history of north central Bexar County from the earliest times until the formation of Timberwood Park in 1977. The presentation includes discussion of the original area landowners and how their families survived living on the outskirts of San Antonio. Each attendee will learn the name of original landowner where your house stands today and view the original land sale information. Because the hot, dry South Texas summer weather has returned and the Edwards Aquifer level continues to drop, San Antonio has returned to Stage 1 drought restrictions.
These rules will continue until there is an announcement in the newspaper that Stage 2 or year-round rules are in effect. It’s been a while since we’ve been in Stage 1 drought restrictions so here’s a little refresher. 1. Landscape watering with an irrigation system, sprinkler or soaker hose is permitted only on your designated watering day before 11 a.m. or after 7 p.m. Watering days begin and end at midnight; overnight watering is not allowed. 2. Hand watering with a hose, drip irrigation, or bucket is permitted any day, at any time. 3. Washing impervious cover such as parking lots, driveways, streets or sidewalks is prohibited. Health and safety exceptions to this rule may be requested from SAWS. 4. Water waste is prohibited at all times. Allowing water to run off into a gutter, ditch or drain or failing to repair a controllable leak is considered water waste. 5. Residential car washing is allowed on Saturday or Sunday as long as there is no water waste.

theory - “names” such as false information and baseless accusations WILL harm people - their pride, reputation, position... even possibly impact their self-esteem. Obviously, these rumormongers have never had that happen to them.
FACTS CONVINCE, RUMORS CONSPIRE
A community with rumormongers cannot effectively function as an enjoyable place to live. I speak from experience in my former condo community in Virginia. A faction of out-of-state owner/investors moved in and decided our fees were too high for them to flip their units and make a “decent” profit (the fees were actually very low for the age and type of community). They made life miserable for about six months before they finally sold at whatever profit was available and moved on - but the lasting personal effects of their underhandedness took years to dispel. Nothing positive came out of these investors’ negativity, which is what usually happens anytime unhappy people start a hate & discontent effort. It will harm the community. It will harm people. It could also spill over into a legal defamation action, which won’t be pretty.

Did they grow up with miserable parents and siblings...do they work in an environment which supports this behavior...or are they just like this because they don’t get their own way all the time? Whatever the reason, when they move into a community, or “life turns against them” all Hell breaks loose.
If you or a group of homeowners are unhappy with the current BOD or other things in your community, before going off on a tangent to destroy people from rumors of perceived mismanagement or other improprieties, use the mechanisms of the governing documents to address the issues.
In the age of technology, accurate information is at everyone’s fingertips. No longer do you have to drive to the library to exhaustively search the millions of titles in the card file to find the books with answers to your burning questions. It seems simple enough - or you seek out someone knowledgeable on the subject. So, why do community rumormongers spread vicious lies about a topic with which they obviously have issues? What’s the point? If you have questions, concerns, issues, go to someone that KNOWS the answer, instead of starting a verbal bonfire that’s going to burn a lot of innocent people?
1. Find a reliable management or BOD source to clarify this issue. 2. Request items to be addressed on the agenda of the next BOD meeting. 3. Ask for association documents. Review meeting minutes, financial statements - these are legal, recorded documents. 4. ATTEND your BOD meetings regularly. Most rumormongers are those who know the least because they won’t go to a meeting to learn what’s really happening. Instead, they just make up stuff to create discord and the self-gratification of “If I’m unhappy, everybody is going to be unhappy.”
Rumormongers are akin to terrorists - they intentionally commit harm under the misguided mission of “righting wrongs”. Spreading falsehoods of any degree is wrong. Plainly and simply wrong. It goes against the grain of any reasonable, intelligent, sensible and God-fearing (deity of choice) individual! Forget the “sticks & stones”
The warning signs are when someone says to you or someone else, or you get a rash of emails starting with “Hey, I heard....., or “Did you know....” or “Someone said...”, or “We just found out...”, etc. WHO ARE these sources? They are typically former board members that are ticked because they lost re-election...and sometimes the lost for a very valid reason. Please don’t just jump on the gossip bandwagon, even if you don’t agree with everything going on...nobody does. It’s human nature. Oh, one more thing - the people that told you the gossip... are probably also gossiping about you.

Don’t risk your child’s life by leaving them in the car. A child’s body can heat up five times faster than an adult’s and even in cooler weather, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly. On a mild day, the temperature inside a car can rise 20 degrees above the outside temperature in just 10 minutes or less.
Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so make sure you take precautions to keep your pet safe.
• Make a habit of checking your vehicle before leaving it. Look before you lock! • Keep a stuffed animal or other reminder next to you in the car as a cue that your child is with you. • If you ever see a child alone in a car, dial 9-1-1 immediately!
• Give your pet plenty of water when it’s hot outdoors. Make sure to fill their water bowl before you leave. • Make sure they have a shady place to get out of the sun. • Be careful not to over-exercise your pet. Too much playtime in the hot sun is dangerous for them. • Hot asphalt and tar can burn sensitive paw pads, walk your pet on grass or dirt when possible. • Keep your pet indoors when it’s extremely hot outside. • Never leave your pet in a car! BACK TO SCHOOL SAFETY TIPS Riding the Bus
School bus transportation is safe. In fact, buses are safer than cars! On average, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported, about 134 people die in school-vehiclerelated crashes each year. Of those, 8% are riding in the buses. Pedestrians, bicyclists and others outside the bus account for 21% of fatalities. More often than not, these deaths or injuries didn't occur in a crash, but as the pupils were entering and exiting the bus. Remember these safety tips: • Have a safe place to wait for your bus, away from traffic and the street. • Stay away from the bus until it comes to a complete stop and the driver signals you to enter. • When being dropped off, exit the bus and walk ten giant steps away from the bus. Keep a safe distance between you and the bus. Also, remember that the bus driver can see you best when you are backed away from the bus. • Use the handrail to enter and exit the bus. • Stay away from the bus until the driver gives his/her signal that it's okay to approach. • Be aware of the street traffic around you. Drivers are required to follow certain rules of the road concerning school buses, however, not all do. Protect yourself and watch out!
Walking and Biking to School
Even if you don't ride in a motor vehicle, you still have to protect yourself. Because of minimal supervision, young pedestrians face a wide variety of decisions making situations and dangers while walking to and from school. Here are a few basic safety tips to follow: • Mind all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard -- never cross the street against a light, even if you don't see any traffic coming. • Walk your bike through intersections. • Walk with a buddy. • Wear reflective material...it makes you more visible to street traffic.

• You might have heard before that most traffic crashes occur close to home ... they do. • Safety belts are the best form of protection passengers have in the event of a crash. They can lower your risk of injury by 45%. • You are four times more likely to be seriously injured or killed if ejected from the vehicle in a crash. • Everyone needs to be buckled up properly. W H AT ’ S · C O O K I N G BBQ Power Bowls These healthy bbq bowls have pretty much everything but the kitchen sink!
Ingredients: • 2 c. barbecue sauce • 1/3 c. orange juice • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1 tsp. cumin • 1/2 tsp. chili powder • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 lb. boneless, skinless chicken breasts • olive oil • 1 c. canned corn • 3 c. brown rice • 1/2 c. sliced pickles • 1 c. kale, finely chopped • 1 c. shredded carrots • 2 c. Shredded cabbage • 2/3 c. mayonnaise • 1/2 c. red wine vinegar • 1 tbsp. mustard • 1 garlic clove, minced • kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper
Directions: 1. In a large bowl, combine barbecue sauce with orange juice, cumin, chili powder and garlic. Reserve ½ cup for serving. 2. In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add chicken and season with salt and pepper. Cook for 8 minutes and flip, pour ¾ of the sauce over chicken breasts and cook 8 minutes more until chicken is cooked through and sauce has reduced slightly. Transfer to a plate to let rest, then slice into cubes and let cool completely. 3. In a medium bowl, whisk together mayo, red wine vinegar, mustard and garlic. In a large bowl, combine kale, cabbage and carrots. Pour dressing over the slaw ingredients and toss to combine. Season with salt and pepper. 4. Build bowls: divide rice evenly between 3 bowls. Divide chicken, slaw, corn, and pickles evenly between bowls. Garnish with the remaining barbecue sauce. Serve. Yield: 3 bowls
