Six Great Backpacks For Kids Kids love backpacks and they come in all shapes, colors and sizes. When they fit properly, they're extremely handy for toteing around all the books, papers and electronic devices. As great as back packs are though, they can strain muscles and joints and may cause back pain if they're too heavy or are used incorrectly. Here's six backpacks that made the grade for school this year. * If you are looking for a rolling backpack for your child, please remember that rolling wheel back packs weigh approximately two or three pounds more than normal back packs and the size of your child should be taken into consideration before purchasing.

Getting A Mortgage More Than Just a Low Rate
Y
ou've waited, debated, and made the decision. It's time to buy a new home or refinance your mortgage. Congratulations ! Now what are your mortgage options? Unfortunately, what seems like a no-brainer - just find the place with the lowest interest rate- is actually how many people find themselves in trouble later. They just walk into a place with the lowest interest rate advertising, fill out a ton of paperwork and walk out with their loan. But this is absolutely the wrong thing to do. Once you sign off, you will have a large financial obligation that will last in the neighborhood of thirty or more years. By the time you pay this loan off, your grandchildren may be hitting you up for money. So while you may want to get a jump on things, now is the time to slow down and consider all your options to ensure you make a good decision. So here are some facts to research before you sign on the dotted line. 1. Ask your friends if they've financed recently and who did they use?
14
Friends are usually eager to tell you who they like or what problems you might encounter. 2. Do your research about mortgages in your area. Call the Better Business Bureau and make sure you are dealing with a reputable company. 3. Learn the jargon. Do you know what a point is? How about an ARM? What are the going rates in your area? Make sure and understand all the fine print. This is a lifetime loan. 4. Meet with the loan officers. Make sure that they will call you back with any questions you might have. Communication is a must when acquiring a loan. Remember this: You will be signing a whole slew of papers for this loan and you should be comfortable with all the details of the transaction. Even though you are the one borrowing the money, you are the customer and should always be treated with respect.

With all the school supplies bought for the kids, here is a list of things that no mom can be without to make it through the school year with ease. 1. CALENDAR/PLANNER: Whether on paper or electronically, everyone needs a way to keep track of all the school events, games and after school activities that begin with the first day of school. 2. TRAVEL MUG: Forget the heavy ceramic mug of summer - you need a good mug with lid that can go everywhere without spilling. One that can keep you warm with cocoa or coffee, yet keep iced drinks cold for warm afternoons of practice at the field with kids. 3. JUNK BASKET: Just like the normal junk drawer in a kitchen, this basket holds all the things you might need for the school year. From paper and pencils to insurance ids- doctor phone numbers, and a cheque book for emergencies. 4. TOTE BAG: All the things you need will never fit in a purse so have a cute tote bag that has zipper pockets that can hold a lot of different stuff. Fill it with a small first aid kit, Kleenex, small hand towel, extra batteries, snacks and everything but the kitchen sink that you might need while out and about. 5. YOGA PANTS: Absolutely! Make them a nice comfy pair - paired with good running shoes and a cute athletic top. Find a cushy pair of socks, and when you have a minute take some time to keep yourself motivated to do something for yourself. 6. UMBRELLA: This is one of those things no one thinks about until the first drops of rain begin to fall. You probably have one, but if asked right now, I bet you couldn't lay your hands on it without hunting around the house. 7. ELECTRONIC DEVICE: eReader - or IPad or any electronic devise that will keep you entertained while waiting for the bus, sitting along the sidelines, dance studios or the doctor's waiting room. 16 Uptown UptownCOUNTRY COUNTRYMAGAZINE MAGAZINE••Northpointe Northpointe••August August2016 2016Issue Issue 16

YOUR EYE MAKE-UP COULD BE MAKING YOU SICK
or a lot of women, eye makeup is an essential part of being properly dressed — just as important as a stylish outfit or nice shoes. But while mascara and eyeliner can create different looks, from subtle to striking, they can also make you sick. The problem: Eye makeup can be a breeding ground for bacteria. We all have a few microbes, like Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, living around our eyes. When eyeliner or mascara is applied, some of those bugs stick to the applicator and are carried back to the makeup container.
Eye products are supposed to contain preservatives to keep bacteria from growing. But some products don’t have enough. And over time, the preservative’s effectiveness declines. As a result, the bacteria on an eyeliner pencil or mascara applicator grow and multiply. Each time you apply makeup, you get bigger and bigger doses of bacteria — enough to cause serious infections. “Every year, many women end up with eye infections from cosmetics,” warns the University of Rochester Medical Center. “In rare cases, women have been temporarily or permanently blinded by an eye cosmetic, according to the FDA.” You can, however, prevent these problems and others with these simple tips: • •
• •
22
Don’t share makeup to avoid spreading bacteria. Replace your eye makeup regularly, at least every three to four months. Remove eye makeup at the end of every day. Practice good eyelid hygiene.
