Aiming for Optimal Health SELF-CARE: THE VITAL BASICS:

Good self-care is vital for healing. Start here with quality sleep, a ‘clean’ diet, good hygiene, stress management, regular exercise and a hopeful attitude. Many health problems are caused or aggravated by lack of self-care. Improving your health habits now is one of the safest, most effective things you can do. This ring also includes information from health care providers and other sources to assist you in making wise choices.

NATURAL HEALTH CARE: YOUR NEXT STEP:

This is where you aim if your self-care has not produced the desired results. This ring includes chiropractic and acupuncture care for pain, inflammation, sleep disorders, stress, anxiety, digestive trouble and allergies. While practitioners of natural health care offer some of the safest treatment and advice available, a good chiropractor or acupuncturist will refer out a patient they feel they cannot help.

MEDICAL CARE: WHEN THE NEED ARISES:

Certain conditions and injuries may require medication or surgery. However, because these carry potential health risks, a good medical doctor should always measure risk versus benefit and help you make an informed choice. Sometimes the risk of medical treatment outweighs the benefit, even if it’s considered a ‘rare’ side effect (think drug commercials on TV that mention death as a possible side effect and you get the idea).

The Necks Best Thing W

hen viewed from the side, the 7 bones of the neck should be gently curved forward, forming the normal cervical curve. This natural alignment, which develops when an infant learns to bring her head up, is important for creating neck and upper back flexibility, strength and comfort. Without a normal cervical curve, joints can become stiff, muscles contracted, nerves pinched and discs and joints degenerated. Dr. Felder sees an alarming number of patients who do not have a normal cervical curve, and she is painfully aware of the health ramifications. Some of her patients are very young and display this malady; a child who did not get enough ‘tummy time’ may fail to develop the curve. In other cases, a difficult C-section or natural delivery, or injury as a toddler damage a child’s ability to develop the full normal curve. Adults can lose the curve as well. Whiplash-type injuries account for many patient’s trouble, and excessive texting and computer work, lifting injuries, striking the head, prolonged stress and stomach sleeping can also force the neck out of its proper curve. The health issues that are associated with a loss of the cervical curve include chronic headaches, shoulder pain, muscle knots and arm and hand pain, weakness or numbness. The natural and strong cervical curve may be your best weapon in preserving good neck health, followed closely by Dr. Felder. She is expert in several different chiropractic techniques designed to gently and safely re-align the neck. In addition, she prescribes pain-relieving therapies that feel great and cervical rehab to develop lost strength and stability.

40 Words For Better Health

A

chieving good health involves proper body mechanics, regular exercise, good nutrition and hygiene, restful sleep, genetics and probably a touch of luck. Research has also identified the major role our mind plays in health. Your mind can be a source of powerful healing, and you can tap into this free power to help you achieve better health by using empowering words every day. 40 words to be used throughout the day: thankful, healthy, faith, strong, vital, well, healing, help, active, fit, energetic, refresh, satisfying, flexible, inspiring, youthful, blessing, enthusiastic, hardy, courage, fulfilling, forgive, robust, zest, harmonious, worthy, balanced, resolve, better, restore, toned, bright, rested, thrive, improve, hope, prevent, benefit, respond and confident. Post the list on your bathroom mirror to look at it every day. Then, craft your own healthy affirmation statement using some of these words. Write it out, memorize it, and allow your brain to take action! Or you can use Dr. Tranter’s: I am thankful that my excellent health allows me to maintain a meaningful spiritual life, enjoy engaging relationships and participate in satisfying work and hobbies until I pass peacefully at age 100.

Surround The Dragon O

ne of the most effective acupuncture techniques for pain is called surround the dragon. The pain, or dragon, is reduced or eliminated by placing tiny acupuncture needles in acupuncture points around the affected area. Next, tiny needles are placed in points further away from the painful area to ‘drain the pain.’ Most patients are pleasantly surprised by the minimal discomfort of these techniques and excited about the fast results usually produced. Often times, long standing injuries of months or even years are reduced or eliminated in just a few weeks.

“I was at the point of amputation! After acupuncture at Georgetown Family Wellness, the severe arthritis pain in my right hand has been reduced by 95%. Acupuncture is Easy-Peasy – absolutely nothing to it. Come in, lay down and relax.” - Tricia, Georgetown

Doing Nothing for Your Health

Y

For you really busy folks who cringe at the thought of sitting and “doing nothing,” you need to realize just how much you are doing for your health during those 15 minutes. When someone remarks they are pleased to see you relaxing a bit, you can shoot them an annoyed look and announce, “That’s what you think! You wouldn’t believe what I’m getA little rest may help us live longer, increase healing ability, ting accomplished!” improve task performance and reduce the chance of injury. For good health, stir up precious energy by getting 15 And that will probably make you feel even better. minutes of rest during the day. This will give your body the energy it needs to create new cells, repair damaged ones, relax your mind and improve your outlook. ou can get a lot of healing accomplished at rest. There is simply not enough energy for full healing when we are busy at work, running errands, working in the garden, playing tennis or doing paperwork late into the evening.

Spend that 15 minutes in a rocking chair and the health benefits will rock your world. Dr. Heinrich Addleheim of the Kinetic Therapy Clinic in Berlin says during regular rocking, “the body settles into a natural rhythm that harnesses incredible powers of recuperation and regeneration.” Some experts refer to rocking as ‘speed healing’, helping to tone leg muscles, improve varicose veins, reduce anxiety and aid in recovery following knee replacement, back pain, and even heart and colon surgery.

Getting Poked with a Stick

emember high school biology? You learned the signs of life; respiration, reproduction, digestion… Perhaps you don’t remember, but one of the signs of life is movement, and it’s a biggie. Some people move so little you almost want to poke them with a stick to see if they’re still alive. The average American now watches TV 28 hours a week or 13 years glued to the tube during an average life span. Sitting motionless for hours in front of TV hardly meets the criteria for life.

Run an 18-wheeler 24 hours a day, seven days a week and it will last infinitely longer than one sitting unused. It’s no different with the body. Retire into a rocking chair and you will see fatal results. The same goes for all body parts. Spinal discs, for example get nutrition through repetitive actions like walking and bending. A disc subjected to inactivity soon degenerates - not from too much motion, but from lack of it. You are composed of 600 muscles and 206 bones, all wonderfully designed and engineered for movement. Life is motion and to express life, you must treat yourself as a moving being. Start today. Pull out that bike of yours, begin a walking program or sign up for dance lessons. Start moving today so you don’t get poked by a stick.

Spinal Rehab at Georgetown Family Wellness is a great way for patients of all ages to strengthen core stability to help maintain excellent posture and alignment. Dr. Tranter said when his mom turned 50, she took his advice and started walking a couple miles every day. She is now in her 80’s and he has no idea where she is!

CATCHING FIRE Chillin’ The Pain

N

ot too long ago on Highway 29 in Georgetown, a car sputtered, ambled to the shoulder and the engine burst into flames. Thankfully, the driver was able to escape without injury but this event brings to mind just how important the ‘little things’ like regular car tune-ups can make all the difference in preventing a terrible crisis.

Regular chiropractic and acupuncture wellness care makes all the difference in how well your body stands up to the effects of time, stress and strain.

Confused whether to use ice or heat? “Most pain is associated with inflammation, so ice may be your best bet, says Dr. Felder. “While heat may feel good, it can actually increase your inflammation the following day, prolonging your misery.”

The first 10 minutes of ice slows the inflammation. During the second 10 minutes, the body sends warming circulation to the area, causing improved healing. So whether you are seeking relief from a brand new injury or an old chronic pain, Dr. Felder recommends ice therapy.

A CHEAP STEAK I

f you are fairly normally sized, your muscles account for about 40 to 45% of your body weight, so you are probably somewhere between 50 to 85 pounds of ‘beef’. Just as a good steak is valued for its tenderness, your muscles function best when they are supple and free from gristle.

Everybody has experienced pain when our muscles become overly tense. As humans, we are susceptible to periodic stress or will occasionally overdo at the computer or in the yard, all of which can cause short-lived pain and stiffness. But what happens when muscle pain doesn’t go away? The cause is often adhesion and scar tissue from chronic muscle contraction, much like the gristle in a cheap steak. With an acupressure treatment called Gua Sha (pronounced ‘gwah – shah’), patients are usually able to find significant relief. Using a special rounded instrument, Dr. Tranter is able to gently break down the scar tissue and adhesions that are associated with pain and stiffness. A big hunk of gristle in your steak can disappoint you; gristle in your muscles and tendons can sideline you. With all of the activities on your plate, you certainly can’t afford to be a cheap steak.

Allergies No Match For Dr. Tranter

THE BAD NEWS: Central Texas is home to millions of cedar trees, dozens of trees and grasses, many different types of molds and pollens, which cause terrible allergies for local residents. THE GOOD NEWS: Central Texas has Dr. Tranter! With acupressure allergy elimination, your allergies can become a thing of the past.

Dr. Tranter has helped hundred of infants, children and adults take their life back and reduce or even eliminate their dependence on medications and shots. His gentle acupressure helps balance your body’s immune response to allergens, food sensitivities and chemicals and the results can last months or even years. Tips for Allergy Sufferers • Start with acupressure allergy elimination from Dr. Tranter • Have regular, periodic adjustments from Dr. Felder to keep good nerve flow to the sinus and lungs • Keep your nose clean… daily use of a xylitol nasal spray safely keeps your nasal passages free of pollen and makes the membranes slick so pollen and bacteria cannot stick • Turn off the ceiling fan at night so you don’t push dust and other pollens far up your nasal passages • Shower, wash your hair and change your clothes after being outside during high pollen count days • Minimize the consumption of sugar, dairy and wheat during periods of high pollen counts • Follow a rotational diet…whatever you eat or drink today, try not to consume again for several days • Reduce the number of smelly household chemicals, air fresheners and overly strong cleaners in your environment

“I started seeing Dr. Tranter for acupuncture a few years ago and my allergies have improved immensely. I was skeptical at first because I’ve tried holistic medicine before and the practitioners all seemed to be the type that thinks hugs cure everything and that not showering is a good thing. Dr. Tranter explains everything as he is doing it and consistently researches new techniques to utilize in his practice. Additionally, he does not talk about auras, chakras, spirit worlds or make you choke from incense. In fact after your appointment he gives you candy.” Sally, Georgetown Want to experience the benefits of acupuncture but you’re a little needle-shy? Dr. Tranter uses several forms of acupressure that get wonderful results in both children and adults.

The Sleep Of Your Life

S

leep may be the single most important factor in predicting longevity, according to Stanford sleep expert Dr. William C. Dement. While sleep may add years to your life, both Dr. Felder and Dr. Tranter warn patients that poor sleep positions can cause misalignment, aches and pains and can slow your recovery to health. Easy changes to your sleep posture and perhaps a new pillow will help you feel great all those extra years that good sleep will bring.

Lie on either side and hug a pillow to keep your arms below shoulder level, relieving pressure on the shoulder joints. A pillow between the knees will help keep your pelvis in alignment.

If you like to sleep on your back, your pillow should allow your face to look directly at the ceiling. A pillow under the knees will alow your lower back to relax.

Try this Quick Cure Experiencing aches, pains, stiffness, poor digestion or excess nasal mucous? Your body might be crying for more water. Dr. Felder recommends you hydrate with 8 glasses of water over the next 24 hours. You may be pleasantly surprised with the results.

Our Doctors Work with Your Nervous System

because both chiropractic and acupuncture utilize this marvelous system to help correct health problems and create health and wellness. Your nervous system consists of the brain, spinal cord and nerves. Besides being the center of mental activity such as thought, emotions, memory and learning, it is the major controlling, regulatory, and communicating system in the body. With millions of receptors located throughout the body, the nervous system regulates your functions and aids in healing. If your nervous system is functioning at 100% you will have normal function in your body, resulting in ease of movement, circulation, digestion, immune response, glandular function and continuous healing.

If your nervous system is functioning at 100% you will have normal function in your body, resulting in ease of movement, circulation, digestion, immune response, glandular function and continuous healing.

Your health depends on both quantity and quality nerve impulses for your body to function at 100%. Any time the nervous system operates at less than 100%, the result is abnormal function: diminished energy, reduced healing capacity and mental sluggishness. This causes pain, inflammation, irregular circulation, poor digestion, interrupted sleep, muscle difficulties and immune problems such as allergies and frequent illness.

Chiropractic helps the quantity of nerve flow. Spinal vertebrae and other bones can become misaligned through poor posture, stress, injuries, falls and heavy lifting. These misalignments, often called subluxations, cause pressure and reduced flow to nearby nerves, much like stepping on a water hose. As long as a foot is on the hose, no water can get to the garden, and the plants suffer. As long as a misalignment is allowed to exist, vital nerve flow is reduced to that body part. For example, misalignment of the bones of the upper neck reduces the flow of the occipital nerve and can cause headaches. Dr. Felder realigns the bones that are interfering with the normal transmission of nerve impulses, bringing about normal nerve function and a wonderful relief of pain. Acupuncture helps the quality of nerve flow. Following an injury, surgery,

poor diet, lack of sleep or a bout of prolonged stress, the quality of nerve flow can be altered. The quality of nerve flow can be likened to radio airwaves. If you are listening to your favorite radio station, say 95.5 FM and someone tunes your radio to 95.7, the result is static. Rather than living with static, the solution is to restore the quality by tuning the radio back. For example, if the quality of nerve flow to the lungs is affected, the result can be frequent lung infections, anxiety or allergies. Dr. Tranter uses points along the lung nerves to retune the quality of flow, improving your response to bacteria, stress and allergens.

Periodic chiropractic and acupuncture tune ups will help ensure your body is functioning at 100%.

Healing Principles in a Nut Shell:

1. Health is created by normal function 2. Normal function is controlled by the nervous system 3. A nervous system functioning with sufficient quantity and quality creates normal function and therefore, health 4. A nervous system functioning with insufficient quantity and quality creates abnormal function and therefore, loss of health 5. Insufficient quantity of nerve flow occurs when the body becomes misaligned and 6. Insufficient quality of nerve flow occurs when the body becomes imbalanced. 7. Chiropractic adjustments restore the quantity of nerve flow and acupuncture restores the quality of nerve flow 8. Restored quantity and quality of nerve flow creates normal function 9. Normal function of the body results in health

Bad Habits of Highly Misaligned People 1 2

They sit too long. Sitting for more than 30 minutes at a time squeezes the fluid out of your discs, leaving your spine compressed and misaligned. Get up and walk for a minute or two every 30 minutes to bring the disc height back to normal. They wear worn out shoes. One of the functions of your shoes is to absorb the shock of walking and running. Shoes typically lose their shock absorption quality long before they look ‘worn’. Bring your shoes in and have Dr. Felder or Dr. Tranter look at them.

They sit in recliners or overstuffed soft chairs and couches. While this may feel relaxing, it will flatten the hollow of your lower back, zapping muscle power and limberness.

They bend at the waist instead of the knees when lifting, putting critical pressure on spinal discs. Always bend your knees rather than your back. “

14

5

They spend too long with their head down. Video games, cell phone, computer and reading all cause your neck to bend forward, flattening the normal cervical curve that creates strength and suppleness.

6

They don’t replace their mattress regularly. Never mind how long the mattress company says their product is ‘guaranteed’ for, a mattress will break down and need replacing more often than you would think.

7

They are careless when using ladders, stairs and step stools. Worse yet, they may stand on chairs or other unstable surfaces to reach high places. Always use ladders, modern step stools with a grasp bar, and slow down when changing from one height to another.
