Also present is long time favorite, Driftwood Estate Winery. One of the original vendors of Dripping With Taste, they have proved to be a heavy weight on the wine scene, winning Top Texas Wine in 2015 for their Longhorn Red 2012. When innocently asked if they would be providing samples of that, owner Gary Elliott chuckles and states, “you’ll have to come by the winery to buy a bottle of that one as we don’t even do tastings of it here!” Something to keep in mind for folks looking to take a souvenir with them from one of the best Texas has to offer.

Otherwise, Driftwood Estate Winery will still have plenty of tasty wines to offer festival goers. So be sure to stop at their booth to try the Sangiovese, their Tuscan style wine. With a blend of 75% Sangiovese, 13% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Syrah, the Sangiovese boasts aromas and flavors of cherry, strawberry and raspberry, and is sure to be a crowd-pleaser.

Elliott also comments on the growth they have seen in the wine business. “When I started the winery in 2002, there were maybe 35 wineries in all of Texas, and now we have close to 400.”

This year marks the 10

th

annual Dripping With Taste festival, and when it comes to tasting some of the finest wines, beers and spirits the Hill Country has to offer, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Originally started by the Dripping Springs Chamber of Commerce in 2007, the goal of Dripping With Taste was to promote wineries popping up in Texas. While wine is still one of the main draws, the festival has grown in variety, according to event coordinator, Pam Owens, Director of Tourism at Dripping Springs’ Chamber of Commerce.

“The first year we had 11 vendors, this year we have 75,” Owens remarks. Among the Hill Country’s ever growing number of wineries to choose from, patrons will also be able to take their pick among the area’s blossoming brewery and distillery businesses. Splashing onto the scene are Jester King Brewery, Last Stand Brewing and Live Oak Distillery among others. Also joining the party are plenty of food and wine related vendors including local businesses Crepe Crazy, Well Yeah Cakes and Two Winey Women.

Reflecting the growth of Texas wine culture, Dripping With Taste has grown in popularity every year, and this year is sure to be no different.

“Last year we had 2,100 people and this year we’re expecting 2,500 people,” event coordinator Owens states. Planning well for this increase, the festival still includes plenty of free parking for returning and new festival goers alike.

“It’s very casual,” Owens adds. “People come from all over the state to enjoy the festival! I think the best part is getting to see people having so much fun.”

In addition to the wine and food vendors, festival events include Smokey’s Mobile Cigar Lounge, door prizes all day, grape stomping, photo booth, bottle ring toss, and a people’s choice vote at the end of the festival.

Tickets can be purchased at www.drippingwithtaste.com and come included with cup and tasting tickets. Additional tasting tickets can be purchased for $1. All proceeds go to the Chamber’s Visitor’s Bureau to help continue promoting Drippings Springs as a tourist destination and further promote local business.

This year’s Dripping With Taste will be held Saturday, September 10th from 12pm to 6pm. So be sure to come by and take your pick of the many flavors the Hill Country has to offer.

All around the festival provides a chance for many local businesses to show off their good stuff and have fun doing it.

Speaking with Carrie Cornwill, the Tasting Room Manager of Dripping Springs’s own Bell Springs Winery, she mentions that, “every year we do tend to get a little extra traffic from the festival and then see folks through the course of the year who found us through the event.”

Last year their new location Sidecar also opened. Located only a few miles down the road from the festival grounds, she states that they saw quite the increase in traffic from festival goers curious to see what else they had to offer.

Of the Bell Springs’ fare to try, Cornwill highly recommends the Drippin’ Sweet White, a light Chardonnay infused with peach juice and perfect for the long Texas summer. “No wine is for everybody but I’ve seen this one cross borders between the newly initiated wine drinkers and experienced alike,” she adds.

GRILLED SKIRT STEAK WITH CHARRED CORN SALAD

Ingeredients 1 skirt steak Kosher salt pepper 2 ear corn 2 tbsp. fresh lime juice 2 tbsp. olive oil ½ small red onion 2 small avocados

Heat grill to medium-high. Season the steak with 1/2 teaspoon each salt and pepper and grill to desired doneness, 3 to 5 minutes per side for medium-rare.

Transfer to a cutting board and let rest for at least 5 minutes before slicing.

Place the corn on the grill along with the steak and grill, turning occasionally, until charred, about 3 minutes. Transfer the corn to a cutting board and remove the kernels from the cobs.

In a large bowl, whisk together the lime juice, oil, and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper. Add the corn and onion and toss to combine, then fold in the avocados and cilantro.

Warm the tortillas on the grill. Serve with the steak, corn salad, and lime wedges, if desired.

The Hill Country Rally for Kids is a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to provide assistance for kids in need around the Texas Hill Country. Over ten years ago, two individuals volunteered their time to help with some small outdoor tasks at the Burke Center for Youth, a residential treatment center for abused young boys in Driftwood, Texas. This endeavor created a desire for these two individuals to give back and eventually led to the formation of the Hill Country Rally for Kids (HCRK) which is now supported by community of Dripping Springs and the surrounding areas.

Last year, with the help of the community, (HCRK) was able to give $120,000 to Amber’s Angels, Boy Scout Troop 101 and Venture Crew, the Burke Center for Youth, the Dripping Springs Ag Boosters, RED Arena, School’s Out Food’s In, Tiger Totes, San Marcos Children’s Center, BIG Love, and Helping Hands of Dripping Springs. A large number of the (HCRK) volunteers not only fund these beneficiaries - they work with the nonprofits throughout the year.

Annually, there are four events: a Gala in April, a BBQ Cook-Off and Car Show in August and a golf tournament at Vaaler Creek in Blanco, TX. Another annual and exciting part of The Rally is the raffle. This year the (HCRK) has two items, a custom Jeep and a custom Yamaha Rhino ATV. The first winner drawn chooses either the Jeep or the Rhino. The second winner drawn gets the other. If you purchase more than one ticket, you could win both! Tickets are $20 each or six for $100. Experience EARLY TEXAS for the entire FAMILY! For over 25 years, the Dr. Pound Historical Farmstead’s Annual Festival, Pioneer Day, has brought the community together to celebrate early Texas. This day-long pioneer themed event transforms the farmstead grounds into an 1850’s era celebration featuring amazing demonstrations, historic educational opportunities, delicious food, great music, and fun for every age.

Pioneer Day is an educational experience of pioneer times held annually on the grounds of the museum. This one-day event boasts more than 40 artisans demonstrating genuine Texas pioneer crafts and skills, such as butter churning, blacksmithing, Dutch oven cooking and quilting.

In addition to demonstrations the festival will include plenty of opportunities for attendees to dive into making crafts of their own such as candle making and participate in pioneer games.

Children of all ages will delight in the tremendous Children’s area where they can be enlightened in a one-room schoolhouse, create cornhusk dolls, and pet chickens and goats. Attendees can also enjoy a covered wagon pulled by majestic horses on a beautiful ride around the Pound House grounds where they can take a tour of the restored historical farmstead led by our docents in period dress.

Civil war and cowboy re-enactors authentically demonstrate the past with rifles and even a small cannon; a period costume shop allows everyone a chance to take part in the festivities as a “settler” in their own right!

While enjoying the old-time blue grass, folk music and storytellers, attendees must indulge in the wide array of sweet and savory food offerings. Included will be The Pound’s Grounds Café, featuring homemade pound cake, old fashioned candy and a scrumptious confectionery, BBQ plates, hot dogs and more!
