Habitat for Humanity Texas

WELCOME TO THE LONE STAR SUMMIT 2016

W

elcome to the Lone Star Summit 2016 – the annual conference for Habitat affiliates in Texas. This year at Habitat Texas, we’ve really been focusing on using our voices to speak up for others. That might mean speaking up for homebuyers as they learn to be homeowners, maybe at the appraisal district or with insurance companies. It might mean using our voices to speak to elected officials on behalf of a homeowner. It might even mean speaking up for your Habitat family in the legislature. There are lots of reasons why you might speak up. It’s about telling volunteers during breaks on the construction site about why Habitat is important. It might mean telling customers in the ReStore how their purchase supports our work. It

Amy Ledbetter Parham

most definitely means telling a compelling story to donors and supporters in your community. And that’s one of the main reasons you are here. This year’s summit is really about story-telling. Our stories are powerful. Our voices are powerful. Even our faith says so. “For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.” (Matthew 18:30). There

are different interpretations of this verse, but it is clear that joining together is powerful. It serves as partnership, witness, support of one another in our work; and a recognition that together we can do more than we can do individually. That’s why we gather; that’s why we serve. That’s our ministry. And Habitat is a ministry. We believe in God’s call to “Build houses and live in them; plant gardens … and work for the peace of the community where I have sent you … Pray to the Lord on its behalf.” (Jeremiah 29: 5, 7). We work with people of all faiths and no faiths because our calling is bigger than us, bigger than Habitat. Sometimes our calling seems too big. There is too much need and too much work, but that’s again why we are here together. Not only do we need the opportunity to

improve our work, we need the fellowship of our Habitat family – to be with people who share your calling, your sense of vocation and the understanding of the joys and bruises (the literal and figurative bruises) our work brings. We could not do this without the exhibitors and sponsors who are with us. Please take a moment to thank them for coming and find out more about what it is that brings them here. Use their services if you can. We hope you will find a place here – we want to hear your story. We are glad you are here! To Exempt or Not to Exempt Employment Issues

Type: Leadership Description: Effective December 1, 2016, U.S. affiliates with paid employees must comply with new changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) which regulates wage and hour law compliance nationally. These changes specifically affect the threshold level of pay required before an employee can be exempt from receiving overtime pay for all hours over 40 worked in a given week. This presentation will walk affiliates through the new requirements of the law, steps they need to take to comply with these changes and several options for managing their employees’ pay and hours going forward. Speaker: Natalie Rougeux Moderator: Natalie Griffith Location: Veramendi Salon A

Power of the Inbox for Nonprofits

Type: Community/Volunteer Engagement Description: What is the first

10

impression you give as a nonprofit when your audience sees you in their email inbox? And when they see you there, what do they do? This powerful seminar takes you step-by-step through the keys to effective email marketing: what it really is (and isn’t); what it can do for your business; and the 5 easy steps you must take to harness the power of the inbox. This includes how to 1) Grow a healthy list, 2) Create great content, 3) Customize a beautiful, mobilefriendly template that matches your brand, 4) Get your emails opened, and 5) Track your results. From revealing why regular email doesn’t work, to insider tips and techniques like automated list building tools and the design elements that work (and those that don’t!), this seminar will give you the keys to the most effective marketing you can do – email marketing. Speaker: Toni Harris Sponsor: Constant Contact Location: Veramendi Salon B

Construction Team - The First Line in Advancing the Mission

Type: Construction Description: The work accomplished on a Habitat job site defines Habitat in the lives of partner families, volunteers and communities. The balance of mission, service and stewardship takes diligence, awareness and commitment. This session addresses not only the “nuts and bolts” of how affiliates build most effectively, but how the decisions of construction leadership carry the mantle of the mission out into the world. Make sure your job site is not only the face of Habitat, but the heart as well. Speaker: Tiffani Irwin Location: Veramendi Salon C

Life After Closing: Healthy Boundaries for Continued Family Support

Type: Homebuyer Services Description: You have helped them with their application, watched while they struggled to work their sweat equity, counseled them and possibly taught them about financial management and budgeting, and finally got them to closing. What now? Does the relationship stop once your partner family becomes a homeowner

family? You want them to be independent and successful, and yet Habitat is oftentimes the only family they can turn to for guidance. This presentation will attempt to answer those questions and help you set a healthy boundary for the homeowner family. Please join us for a candid discussion of how to support and even nurture your families so that they are not just surviving, but thriving. Speaker: Michele Burns Location: Veramendi Salon D

Convert Supporters with Powerful Landing Pages

Type: Fund Development Description: When prospective donors are directed to your website, do you grasp them firmly and get them to commit? According to a study conducted by NonprofitHub.org in 2013, you probably don’t. The report reveals a major chasm between the importance of landing pages and a NPO’s ability to create them. MarketingSherpa says that 44% of clicks are directed at homepages rather than a relevant landing page. It’s time to solve the problem. Learn why to use them and how to build them. In this fast-paced session suitable for all levels of expertise, Jay Wilkinson will navigate through landing page landmines and share dozens of real-world, nonprofit landing pages that get results. Participants will leave the session with practical tips, and action steps that can be implemented right away. You won’t want to miss this engaging and informative session led by Jay Wilkinson, one of America’s top-rated speakers. Speaker: Jay Wilkinson Sponsor: Firespring Location: Spring Lake C
