Sights & Sounds of Christmas San Marcos’ holiday tradition continues to thrive KAITLIN SCHMIDT DESIGN EDITOR

•••

Sights & Sounds of Christmas started as a one-man show. Santa Claus would come to the courthouse square, sit on a folding chair and hand out peppermint sticks and Christmas cheer to children. “Kids would come in without a peppermint stick and leave with one. That was all of our Christmas, which didn’t set with some people very well,” Kelly Franks, one of the founders of Sights & Sounds and former Main Street director, said. “People got to talking and the county got interested, performing arts got interested and the hospital got interested.” Five people were on the original Sights & Sounds committee. They used old props from a production at

the Price Seniors Center of a school, church and house and turned them into Santa’s Village. “I think it was either two or three days. We advertised and people came out. We also put a lot of lights out,” Franks said. “It was a good beginning. Not spectacular, but it was a delightful time.” Sights & Sounds grew each year. As more organizations and schools got involved, the event eventually outgrew the courthouse square and moved to its current location at the San Marcos Park Plaza, a move which drew some flack. “They eventually had to move it and a lot of people objected to it, but it came off very well and everyone loved it,” Franks said. “When kids get involved, the parents come. And they

Sights & Sounds, Premier Cuts had just opened. Someone encouraged owner Brian Olson to get involved with Sights & Sounds, so he set about finding a way to bring his airplane chair for kids into the event. “They said they didn’t normally do this, but they would let me bring my chair if I promised to help them next year. I thought it would be really easy,” Olson, who now serves as Sights & Sounds resident, said. “In January, she called me and asked me to come to a board meeting. The next thing you know, I’m in charge of cotton candy.” Olson oversaw all of the cotton candy at the event for years. Then, he joined the sponsorship committee. This year marks his fifth

year as president. “I never thought I’d be here,” Olson said. Looking back 30 years, Franks still finds it hard to believe how much the event has grown, especially compared to the early days with Santa and a peppermint stick. Now, Sights and Sounds is one of the premiere Christmas events in Central Texas. “We’ve become quite well known for Sights & Sounds. I think one of the biggest assets is that it’s not commercialized so much that it’s lost its meaning,” Franks said. “It still is very much a community event. You don’t lose the Christmas spirit and the meaning of Christmas and I think that’s very, very important.” For more information, visit www.sights-n-sounds. org.

Parking DAVID SHORT EXECUTIVE EDITOR

•••

There is a simple and very easy solution to parking for Sights & Sounds, and best of all, it is completely free. Why fight for parking spaces, deal with downtown construction or anything else to rob you of your pleasure each night? Just go to the massive, open parking lots at Bobcat Stadium and grab one of the many shuttles that will carry you stress free to the front gates and then pick you up when you are ready and take you back to your car later in the evening. Shuttles will run starting at 5 p.m. each evening and continue through 11:30 p.m. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be on one of the lucky shuttles where riders break out in spontaneous Christmas songs!

How to get in DAVID SHORT EXECUTIVE EDITOR

•••

In your mind, you can already hear the laughter and excitement of children having the time of their life, smell the aroma of great food cooking from turkey legs to kettle biscuits and so much more, see the beautiful Bethlehem Village and listen to the variety of music coming from the stage. It’s in your imagination right now but in just a few days it will all come to life as the 2014 Sights & Sounds gets underway. An event as grand as this costs a lot of money to put on, even with countless volunteers donating hundreds of hours before, during and

after the four-day run. Admission costs are kept low, just about the cheapest entertainment a family or individual can find. But the value of the multiple shows, arts and crafts booths, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus and so much more far exceeds the entrance price, especially if you take advantage of the four day wristband! So, here it is: Children 12 and under are admitted free! Nightly admission for those 13 to adult is $5 Or, the best value: Full 4 day admission with wristband is $7 on presale at the San Marcos Activity Center or the Parks & Rec office. You can also purchase them online at a cost of $10 each.

Kyle Park returns to San Marcos for Sights & Sounds KAITLIN SCHMIDT DESIGN EDITOR

•••

As high school came to an end, all of Kyle Park’s friends went to Texas Tech University from their Austin high school, but Park didn’t want to travel that far, so he went to Texas State. Which ended up being his best bet because after two years in school, he was able to quit and perform and make music full time. “I knew I wanted to be musician, I didn’t intend to quit school but being in San Marcos, I was close to country music avenues,” Park said. “Being in Lubbock or somewehere else would’ve been so far away

from the ‘hub’ of Texas country music. That’s why I chose San Marcos.” Park has gone on to produce four albums, and tours for most of the year. But he still makes time to get the band back together in Central Texas. And this year, he’ll be playing Sights & Sounds. “It’s a rush (playing for big crowds.) The biggest compliment to my music is having people sing along,” Park said. “You know, because you have to listen to something more than once to learn the words usually. That’s the biggest reward for me as a songwriter. As a musician and artist, it’s always good to see a packed house and people dancing.”

Getting the band back together Elftones to make rare live appearance at Sights & Sounds KAITLIN SCHMIDT DESIGN EDITOR

•••

The Elftones started as a studio band about 15 years ago. “I blame Scott (Wade) and Paul (Wilson) for starting the whole dang thing,” Ace Pepper said. Pepper has lived in San Marcos for two decades and has been playing guitar “for freaking ever.” He’s played in multiple bands around the San Marcos area and plays with a blues band regularly. Wade and Wilson also have their own bands. But come Christmas time every year, The Elftones come together for a few days of magical Christmas cheer. “I’ve got this groovy little house with a groovy little recording studio. During Christmas of 1996 Scott, Paul and I decided that it would be fun to

record classic rock n’ roll Christmas songs and give them out to our friends on cassette tapes as Christmas presents. Back when cassette tapes were around, of course,” Pepper said. “We had a lot of fun recording them. The next year came around and we thought we should do it again and we invited some other friends to join us, too. We started doing this every year and we kept inviting more friends to sit in with us but we always kept the core group.” The Elftones have recorded around 50 Christmas songs to date and as cassette tapes turned to CDs, the music started making it’s way all around town. “It freaks us out when we run into people at the grocery store that have heard about The Elftones,” Pepper said. “The CDs have been floating around so long that a lot of people

in town have heard of this stuff. We actually have fans.” Those fans will get a rare opportunity to see The Elftones perform live, some••• SEE ELFTONES PAGE 23

thing that’s only happened a few times, at this year’s Sights & Sounds. “I was down at the Parks and Recreation Department a couple of weeks ago and I ran into Lisa Morris who does Sights & Sounds and she mentioned that they needed a couple of acts to play the festival,” Pepper said. “(I told her about The Elftones) and I kind of talked her into it and then started making phone calls.” For the band, recording in the studio is easy. But learning a whole set of songs to play in front of a live audience? They know from experience that takes work. “For us to actually heard all the cats at once and perform all these songs at once is kind of major for us. It’s pretty major for (fans)

for us to step out and do it in public,” Pepper said. “I’ve wanted to do this for years. I’m just thrilled. I always thought the band would be great at Sights & Sounds. It’s blowing up and I’m stoked.” The Elftones have also never been caught on camera. But that will change this year, too. “It’s mystical and magical that way. The Elftones have never been captured in a photograph together,” Pepper said. “We’re going to try and get the whole set on video and I’m telling everyone I know with a phone camera to grab something on video, too.” For more information visit sonicdeli.com/elftones. So much to do! But thankfully you have four evenings to fit it all in at the 2014 Sights & Sounds. The ever popular ice skating rink is back again and promises fun for children, couples and the entire family. Town of Bethlehem takes you back in time to the birth of Christ. Experience what life was like over 2,000 years ago complete with live animals like camels and sheep among others. And, yes, you can even pet them! Children and adults alike can learn about past traditions, work with ancient arts and crafts and make historical desserts. It brings history to life in a way that your children and family will never forget and treasure for their lifetime. The largest carnival to hit San Marcos each year is also at Sights & Sounds promising a variety of rides for small children as well as adventure seeking youth and adults. And of course, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be available for pictures! Each night Santa will arrive at Sights & Sounds in a different and unique way. On opening night, Wednesday, the North Pole couple will arrive right at 6:30 p.m. by helicopter. They will land on the soccer fields between City Park and Texas State University so arrive early to watch him land! Thursday night the famous Pink Heals Hays County Fire truck “Baylie” will carry Santa and Mrs. Clause into the park. Then on Friday night Santa arrives riding on a Harley Davidson at the front gate. Everyone loves San Marcos’ greatest treasure, the San Marcos River, and Santa is no exception. That’s why on Saturday night he will arrive by river boat and land between the two bridge crossings in the park.

Tradition comes to an end Beloved food booth family retiring after more than 20 years at Sights & Sounds DAVID SHORT EXECUTIVE EDITOR

•••

For more than 20 years Luz Garcia and her family were a welcome sight annually at Sights & Sounds, and their incredible food filled many stomachs. Their booth, “A Family Affair,” was something many of us looked forward to each year because

it was the ONLY time a year you could enjoy their delicious cooking. As with anything, there comes a time when it ends and last year the Garcia family decided it was time to retire. While the three to four generations of the Garcia family will certainly be in attendance this year, they will no longer have their famous food booth. Luz Garcia, the matri-

arch of the family, said this month it was “just time.” The family’s story is heartwarming and special. Former San Marcos Daily Record Feature Editor Jeff Walker captured it as only he could and we wanted to share it with you one more time. Below is Jeff’s story which ran in the Holiday issue of Discover in 2011.

A Family Affair Garcias always make time for one another inside the kitchen JEFF WALKER FORMER FEATURES EDITOR

•••

Luz Garcia carefully molds the batter between her fingers, a mixture of cornmeal, salt and lard. Once formed to her liking, the round concoctions will land on a hot griddle and become part of a homemade gordita. It’s one of Garcia’s many specialties. Further down along the kitchen counter, daughter Gracie Salas gives the menudo a stir anstopstowatch her mother work. Luz’s son Hector video tapes the whole scene from a nearby bar stool, and over the next few minutes, one by one brothers and sisters and nephews make their way into their mother and father’s home. Within

minutes, Luz, her husband Gregorio, and kids Hector, Gracie, Alice and Anna, along with several children, are all standing around the kitchen as supper awaits. The subtle wisp of a burning stove top gives way to chatter and laughter among family members, while Garcia remains dutifully at her station near the griddle, pulling off one gordita at a time and replacing it with a fresh plop of batter. For decades now, the Garcia’s fellowship time has centered around the kitchen and Luz’s home-cooked meals. Food, as they say, has a wonderful way of bringing people together. On this night Gracie assists her mom to get the meal on the table. She and her sisters learn merely bu

watching and listening, as not one of their mom’s dishes are written down in a recipe book. “We’re trying to pick up her cooking little by little,” Gracie says as she looks over the pot of menudo, giving it another stir. “But it’s taking us a while. We like to say we’re going to record her from now on. We’re trying to keep the tradition alive making these gorditas.” Luz makes a special effort to connect with her kids. Each family member has his or her own day of the week to enjoy a meal cooked by her—the dish is their choosing. Enchiladas, arroz con pollo, chicharrones; Luz can do them all. But Luz doesn’t just cook for her family. For the past 25 years, she and her kids have set up a booth at Sights & Sounds where they sell homemade gorditas

and bowls of steaming hot menudo — a Mexican soup well suited for winter temperatures. Lines of people waiting for the “A Family Affair” booth are famously long, wrapping around the food court at peak hours. “The lines are very long. People are willing to wait,” daughter Alice says. Luze says that she’ll go through about 60 pounds of masa a night during Sights & Sounds. She starts each festival day at around 5 a.m. by cooking huge pots of menudo—a soup made with beef stomach with a chile-base—each of which will simmer for more than eight hours. While the men in the family set up the booth, Gracie and her sisters are busy doing all the chopping and prep work for that night’s service.

“It’s a lot of work,” Gracie said. “My sister and all will take off three days of work for it.” Growing up in Mexico, Luz doesn’t remember her mom cooking a lot: “She had to work to care for the family. With eight kids of her own. Luz learned to cook later in life out of necessity. She also prepares meals for sale throughout the year. The calendar hanging on her kitchen wall is filled with orders of tamales or beans and rice for church organizations or just a neighbor who enjoys her cooking. And they go out all over the country. “This one time, I was sending some tamales out, wrapped in dry ice, to Arizona and the people never got their order. Well, they got

confiscated at their airport because the police thought they had something else,” Luz says. Hector and the rest of the family erupt in laughter, recalling the story that’s likely been shared dozens of times before. The Garcia family, after all, spends a lot of time around the kitchen. There’s no better time to catchup with one another. And, hopefully, they’ll continue to pick up this craft that their mother has perfected so well. “It’s sort of hard to learn, because nothing’s written down. Especially in a day and time when I can go on the Food Network site and print out a recipe and follow it. This, I can’t do that,” sister Anna said. “But doing this brings us together. It’s our time for bonding. And it’s up to us to keep it going.”
