M

any of his author friends are envious of his nom de plume: Rayzor Dent. But when one calls him at work he may be reached by asking for Ray Dent, his given name.

He’s a natural, engaging conversationalist and a confident public speaker (which is a feat in itself for those who shudder at the thought of facing a crowd.)

He impressed an audience gathered at Marble Falls Founders Day in July at the Falls on the Colorado Museum with a speech about the Alamo. In it, he revealed the depth and breadth of his historical knowledge.

(It’s dang hard to impress a bunch of Texans with insight

into the familiar subject.)

Not to mention that he’s a prolific author, of numerous magazine articles, short stories, poems (not published) and most recently historical fiction. Vaulted Eagles is an intensive, yet entertaining study of the Alamo and Santa Anna, the infamous Mexican general who conquered the Texians and Tejanos at the Alamo in 1836.

Dent knows an awful lot about Santa Anna.

“Readers can’t believe a lot of the things in the book actually happened,” he said, launching into a tale of Santa Anna’s “putrid, rotting leg” he’d lost in battle. At one point when facing the possibility of being thrown out of office, he did what any politician would do to regain popularity. He rode around Mexico City in a coach, waving the amputated leg he dug up, “whipping the crowd into a frenzy with his speech about how much he’d given for Mexico,” Dent explained.

“That really happened. Santa Anna was a wonderful bad guy for a novel.”

“The book is historically quite accurate, except for the parts I made up,” he said.

and learning from the historian there.

“I had access to a lot of cool stuff while I was researching for the book,” he said.

Dent was born and raised in Lubbock, but has spent a lot of time out West.

He went to Southern Methodist University on a track scholarship, then in his sophomore year life changed course. “Vietnam was rockin’ and rollin’ and my draft number came up, which led to a two-year ROTC program in my junior and senior years.” After graduation, he quickly found himself commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Force and sent through pilot training. He flew B-52 bombers, those flying fortresses that played a role in American warfare 10-year career in the Air Force fondly.

Megan Klaeger SOON-TO-BE LAWYER HOPING TO HELP COMMUNITY WITH DOG PARK

M

egan Klaeger, 32, moved to Marble Falls, Texas, five months ago after living in Fort Worth, Kerrville, Roswell, Albuquerque, Phoenix, Tuscon and doing her undergraduate schooling in New York City and her graduate work in Indiana.

Currently awaiting her bar exam results, Klaeger plans to work with her father as a defense attorney in the community. Klaeger is pictured with her beloved rescue dog and pal, Jo, an Australian Cattle Dog mix.

Q: When did you begin living in Marble Falls and what led you to settle in the area?

A: I moved to Marble Falls in May of this year. My dad, Robert Klaeger, has lived in Marble Falls since I was two weeks old. When I was home on Christmas break this past year, he asked me to come work with him when I graduated from law school.

I initially declined, but after thinking more about the work I would be able to do in the community, I realized that it was the perfect fit for me.

Q: Where do you work and why do you like working there?

A: I work at Robert Klaeger’s Law Office – soon to be the Klaeger Law Firm. I took the bar exam in July, I will get my results in November. Once I pass, I will officially be an attorney, focusing on criminal defense. I love working with my dad because he genuinely cares about helping others and doing the right thing.

A: I am currently trying to establish a dog park in Marble Falls. A dog park can be a great way for dogs and their owners to socialize with other dogs and dog lovers in the area. Other communities have established dog parks with great success and have found that many behavioral issues are reduced when dogs have the opportunity to expend

some of their boundless energy.

I think Jo’s Dog Park would be an awesome addition to the city park system. With the help of my volunteers, the goal is for the dog park to be completely self-sustaining so as not to be an additional expense on the city.

I would also love to see more people get involved. We have so many cool events, whether it is Market Day on Main Street or concerts in the park - as a community, we should support these events – all that it takes is showing up. The more we show up, the better our community will be.

Q: What is your favorite activity or spot in town?

A: My visits home were never complete without a stop at the Blue Bonnet Café, my favorite restaurant. Nothing beats their chicken fried steak! I am hoping that my new favorite place will soon be Jo’s Dog Park!

Q: What do you like to do in your free time?

A: In my free time, I practice yoga, hang out with my crazy dog “Jo,” kayak, run, cook, travel and spend time with my friends and family.

Q:Who is your role model, and why?

A: Derek Jeter. When asked to pick a song that summed up his career, he selected “My Way” by Frank Sinatra, saying that while there were players with more talent, he didn’t think that anyone played harder. I admire the way he approached his career – with respect for the game and hard

work, all while maintaining his integrity, and earning respect from others.

Q: What is something interesting not many people know about you?

A: One of my goals is to visit all the baseball parks. So far, I have been to 17.

GO NATIVE MOVEMENT OFFERS LESS YARDWORK, MORE WATER, A MORE BEAUTIFUL TEXAS

movement to reintroduce and renew Texas’ native plants is growing – literally.

For Texas homeowners, this means less yardwork, less pressure on the state’s already drought-stressed water supply and a more colorful landscape.

“Think of all you could do without spending Saturdays watering, mowing, edging and picking up grass clippings,” said Faye Tessnow, who often represents the Texas Native Plant Society before the Texas Legislature.

Tessnow, a Lago Vista volunteer of the year, moved to Lake Travis’ north shore 15 years ago with her husband, Kurt, an engineer recently retired from Bell Helicopter’s Mid-Cities DFW manufacturing plant. Faye, a gardener, was quickly

frustrated when deer ate everything she planted.

“We didn’t have deer in Bedford and it was a real shock to learn how ravenous the deer are,” she said.

Searching for alternatives, she became enthusiastic about restoring the original Texas landscape not only to her yard but throughout the region and, heck, the entire state.

Texas plants such as milkweeds, plum trees, passion flowers and hackberry trees provide nutrients for insects, which birds feed upon, resulting in a more diverse and stable food chain.

JIM GOODSON to plants, the only organisms capable of capturing the sun’s energy and turning that energy into food for the rest of us,” wrote University of Delaware professor Dr. Douglas Tallamy, author of “Bringing Nature Home.”

His book was a huge impact on Tessnow.

“The existing suburban lawn is a simplified community that consists of a few ornamental plants that provide neither food nor shelter for animals,” Dr. Tallamy stated.

“Because animals directly and indirectly depend on plants for their food, the diversity of animals is closely linked to the diversity of plants,” Dr. Tallamy said.

“When there are many species of plants, there are many species of animals.

“If you want to create ecosystems with a diversity of animal species, we first have to encourage a healthy diversity of plants. It’s simple: By

gardening with native plants — no matter where you live or how small or large your space is — you can help sustain wildlife,” he wrote.

Tessnow, who chairs Natives Instead of Common Exotics (NICE) and who is a longtime member of the Highland Lakes chapter of the Texas Native Plant Society, led a statewide effort to declare October Texas Native Plant month.

In 2009 she addressed Texas legislators, asking for and receiving a week dedicated to native plants and restoring the original Texas ecosystem.

This year, Texas Native Plant week was observed Oct. 19-25.

“Native plants are valuable,” she said, addressing both the House and Senate. “They are essential to the maintenance of a healthy ecosystem. Native plants are the food source for pollinators, which perpetuate the existence for all. Birds spread the seed and pollinate flowers as they fly from plant to plant and on their ways north and south across our state.

“Plants are a food source and homes for creatures. The tallest trees and the lowest grasses are nesting places.They are resting places for birds and butterflies during heavy rains and thunderstorms. Some native plants are host plants vital to butterflies.”

But why not just settle for the invasive grasses and plants imported to Texas? Plants such Silk Tree Mimosa, Paper Mulberry, Chinaberry, Chinese Pistache and Chinese Tallow.

Shrubs such as Small Leaf Privets, Bamboo, Taiwanese Photinia and Tamarisk Salt Cedar. Vines like Japanese Honeysuckle, Kudzu and Chinese Wisteria. The list goes on and on.

Those invasive plants have a different chemistry than native Texas plants. Texas insects feeding from native plants are more nutritious than insects trying to survive on invasive plants.

“An experiment was done in South Texas on a ranch,” Tessnow told legislators. “One plot was planted with native grasses. The other plot was planted with alien species of grasses and low-growing plants.

“The state bird - the Mockingbird - went to the native plants for food in a ratio of 3:1 over the non-native species plot. They preferred the insects that were on the native plants because of the health of the insects. This has to do with leaf chemistry and the adaptation of insects to the plants.”

Tessnow and other Highland Lakes chapter members promote native plant tours throughout October. Since Texas contains five distinct ecological regions, native planters must do some research to find out what type of plants, shrubs, trees and grasses are best for their area.

Twenty-five hours of training has qualified her to be a National Wildlife Federation Habitat Steward.

She’s a tremendous personal resource, but so are the “Texas Almanac” and the Native Plant Society of Texas websites.

“It’ll be the best thing you’ve ever done for your yard, ranch or farm, schoolyard, city park or anywhere,” Tessnow said A member of the local garden club which adopted Lago Vista Elementary School, Tessnow works hand-in-hand with Keep Lago Vista Beautiful to bring native flora and fauna to city properties.

“You’ll need to do a certain amount of watering after planting but soon you can taper off – and they seldom need to be watered again,” Tessnow says.

“It’s just so much less work. It’s fun to sit on your porch and look over a living, breathing landscape and know you are creating oxygen and a healthy ecosystem for hundreds of plants, insects, birds, wildlife and yourself.” +

Q. What goes on at ‘Have Your Fit’?

A. I have been teaching group fitness classes and doing wellness coaching in Lago Vista for about eight years. I have the ACMS

Personal Trainer certification and I continually study exercise programs, nutrition and health-related topics.

I absolutely love doing workouts with women who are on a journey to improve their health through regular group exercise.

As a wellness coach, I work with clients to progress toward personal healthier lifestyle goals. We focus on nutrition, physical activity, relationships, lifestyle and other elements of life that can impact markers of health such as stress, weight and energy levels.

We work together to reduced challenges to a fulfilled life and choosing a course of action.

Q. You and your husband Todd are rearing four children in Lago Vista. Why do you love making a family here?

A. By sheer numbers, Lago Vista is not one of the smallest towns in America but it has a small town feel for sure.

I think Lago Vista area is about 10,000 people in the school district. The lake and the beautiful Hill Country seem to draw folks to a unique and less-hurried lifestyle than city or suburbia living offer. That’s what brought us here, 12 years ago.

While the homes can be very spread out, there is a real sense of community. The diversity in demographics is mostly a wide age spectrum.

I have seen the community beautifully embrace the generational span in our churches, organizations, schools, government and activities.

Our children span from age 10 to 21 years old.

Over the past 12 years, they have been loved,

cheered, reprimanded and encouraged by so many people of all generations in our community.

I am grateful for the many people that have invested in our lives to reinforce confidence and family values in our children. We cherish the way so many show up for hometown parades, festivals and football games. But, what is most impressive is the way this community rallies when someone needs help in a time of crisis.

I’ve never seen anything like it!

arble Falls officially became the home of the Save The World Brewing Company with a grand opening and ribbon cutting of the brewery facilities and tasting room Saturday, Sept. 13.

The brewery not only produces Belgian style beers, but also donates funds to charities, including Food for the Hungry, Meals on Wheels Association of America and

the Highland Lakes Habitat for Humanity.

Quynh Rathkamp, who co-owns the company with husband, David, said the grand opening celebration as

“the culmination of everything we’ve worked so hard for.

We’ve completed the building, completed the tasting room, and gotten the proposition passed,” she said. “We’re now fully loaded and ready to run.

We’re thankful for the support of family, friends and the community. We hope this gives back to the community by bringing people here. We hope to be a contributing member of the community.”

Following its ground breaking back in April 2013, the brewery faced

another challenge when the Rathkamps started a petition in January to allow alcohol sales and on-site consumption at their location, which did not fall in the limits of the original wet vote. A proposition appeared on the ballot and passed in May. Rathkamp said that when starting the petition, she and her husband knew they had community support.

riginally from San Angelo, Texas, piano teacher Gale Pierce moved to Kingsland in 2008 after she and her husband retired. They had started visiting the city years earlier for holiday vacations because it was a convenient place for family to meet, plus it was just a nice area with a beautiful lake.

Now, she is the owner of Pierce Performance Studio, where she teaches, parttime, students of piano, flute and music theory. She keeps a flexible schedule in her retirement, teaching a maximum of 15 students so she still has time to travel to see her grandchild. A: I started playing piano at age five, and I was always interested in music because I was raised around it.

My grandmother was my inspiration: she played by ear, and she could play anything.

I have to have a goal. I like challenges, like when I started oil painting five years ago.

A: I’m inspired by little things that people do, those little moments that affect everyone. I’m inspired by people who stand up for what they believe in. I’m an artsy person, so I’m inspired by music, scenery, spiritual places and paintings.

Q: What is it about Kingsland, Texas, that makes it a good place to live?

A: It’s the lake and outdoor activities that attract people initially. Then, you realize what you have here. There’s a sense of community: there’s always someone giving, whether it’s at the food pantry, senior center, churches or the community center. There’s always something going on and after you’ve lived here for awhile you become a part of it, which gives you a sense of belonging. +
