The drive on FM 390 passes through pastoral farm and ranch country important in the early days of the Republic of Texas. The area is particularly noted for its spring wildflowers, such as bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and phlox.

La Bahía route once served as Texas’ main road Long before there was asphalt, the La Bahia trail wound its way through Washington County. FM 390 now follows (roughly) what was the La Bahía, or Lower Road, which was originally an east-west Indian trail in southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. It eventually extended to Washington-on-the-Brazos and Goliad. The Brazos River is thought to have been crossed at the mouth of the Navasota River in present Grimes County and the Colorado

River near the site of present La Grange in Fayette County. The western portion of the road was laid out by the Spanish and was known as the Atascosito Road. The route was presumably known as early as 1690, when it was traveled by Alonso De León. It was known as the Opelousas Road during the 19th century, when it was used as a cattle trail. The drive on FM 390 passes through pastoral farm and ranch country important in the early ROUTE continued on page 12

Route

Continued from Page 11 days of the Republic of Texas. The area is particularly noted for its spring wildflowers, such as bluebonnets, Indian paintbrush and phlox. Most of the 39-mile route follows FM 390, also called La Bahia Road. It has been designated as a scenic route by the Texas Department of Transportation. Unlike other Texas highway route markers, which are black and white, the FM 390 markers are brown and white to designate its scenic status. The signs still use the same shape, size and symbols, however. Special attractions include Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historical Park, Old Baylor Park and wildflowers. The first portion of the modern road to join the state’s highway system was the section in Independence from Old Baylor Park to present FM 50 which, along with FM 50 south of that juncture, was first designated as SH 211 sometime between 1933 and 1936. By 1939 that highway was decommissioned but reinstated in 1940. Highway 211 was replaced by FM 50 and State Highway Spur 197 along the present FM 390 at Independence in 1943. Two years before in Burton, State Highway Loop 125 was designated along the present Spur 125 and the portion of the present FM 390

Derek Hall/Banner-Press

La Bahia was settled by German immigrants in the 1870s and flourished briefly in the 1870s and 1880s. A post office was opened there in 1879, but the town’s development was slow, largely because of competition from nearby Burton and Carmine. In 1893 the La Bahia post office was closed, and a number of the community’s families moved to larger towns. La Bahia, however, remained a center for the surrounding farm community. In the 1930s the La Bahia Dance Hall ROUTE continued on page 14 (shown) attracted visitors from Brenham and other nearby towns.

Route

Continued from Page 12 between Spur 125 and U.S. 290. FM 390 was initially designated in 1945 from Loop 125 in Burton to Highway 36 near Gay Hill. Later that year FM 390 was extended over Loop 125 to U.S. 290 and Loop 125 was shortened to its present spur. In 1951, FM 390 was extended four miles east of Highway 36 and an additional eight-tenths of a mile was added the following year. In 1954, the route was extended to FM 50 south of Independence and then from the junction of FM 50 and Spur 197 in Independence east to William Penn. The route at Independence was realigned in 1958 creating the route’s spur and eliminating the route’s concurrency with FM 50 south of town and replacing Spur 197. FM 390 was extended south of William Penn in 1971 to a portion of Highway 90 that would be renumbered as Highway 105 in 1973.

In 1995, the Texas Legislature passed a law recognizing FM 390 as a scenic highway and directing TxDOT to erect route markers indicating the route number and the road’s scenic status. In response, TxDOT erected along the route a shields unique among the state’s Farm to Market Roads with a distinctive brown background resembling the shields of the state’s RecreSTYLIST

Visit ‘Where Texas Became Texas’ Located just 20 miles from Brenham, the picturesque 293-acre Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site (WOB) is where 59 delegates met and crafted Texas’ Declaration of Independence from Mexico in 1836. Until 1846, the Republic of Texas proudly existed as a separate nation. This, truly, is “Where Texas Became Texas.” Visitors can experience life in early 19th century at this state park with its many amenities, events and attractions — all administered by TPWD (except for the Star of the Republic Museum, which is administered by Blinn College): • A replica of Independence Hall marks the spot Texans signed the declaration of independence from Mexico in 1836, giving birth to the Republic of Texas. Tours offered daily. 936878-2214 • The Star of the Republic Museum preserves the culture of the Republic of Texas and interprets the history and values of early Texans through exhibits, tours, programs, web activities and outreach. It holds the highest honor for a museum: accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums. 936-878-2461 • Barrington Living History Farm represents the farm of Dr. Anson Jones, the last president TEXAS continued on page 17

Continued from Page 22 a phone call from the heavenly Rosemary Clooney lets them know that they’re needed to put a little harmony into a discordant world! 2015 brings the drama “A Piece of My Heart,” playing Feb. 19-March 8. Based on true accounts of six women who went to Vietnam: five nurses and a country western singer (sent by an unscrupulous agent to entertain the troops), the play portrays each young woman before, during, and after her tour in the war-torn nation. Neil Simon’s romantic comedy “Chapter Two” closes the main stage season, playing May 28-June 7. George Schneider is a middle-aged writer struggling to accept his wife’s untimely passing. After being set up by his brother Leo on a series of wildly unsuccessful dates, he meets Jennie Malone, a divorced soap opera actress. Coping with their separate tragedies, George and Jennie must discover not when, but how they can start chapter two of their lives. Kicking off the Studio Series is the drama “Kayak,” playing Oct. 23-Nov. 2. Alone on a vast stretch of water, Annie recounts the strange chain of events that left her stranded in her son’s old kayak. A doting mother, Annie is blindsided when

her son Peter falls in love with Julie, a passionate environmental activist. Unable to reconcile herself to Julie’s radical worldview, Annie struggles to keep Peter from falling further into the young woman’s dangerous world. The final Studio Series production, “Shooting Star,” plays April 9-19. Snowed in overnight at a middle-America airport, college lovers Elena Carson and Reed McAllister have an unexpected and life-altering reunion. Elena has stayed true to her hippie-ish, counter-culture path, while Reed has gone corporate and conservative.

As the night gives way to laughter, banter, remembrance and alcohol, Elena and Reed revisit a past that holds more surprises than they imagined — and a present that neither of them could have predicted. The summer family musical is “Snow White Goes West” July 23-26. Set during the California gold rush, this tongue-in-cheek retelling of the timeless classic pits the hapless heroine against an ill-tempered saloon hall owner named Queenie and her assistant, Sneaky Sam. In true fairy tale fashion all ends well, thanks to handsome marshal Joe Prince and the seven prospecting Dwarf Brothers.

The groundbreaking kicked off the museum’s expansion into what was formerly the Kerrville Bus Lines depot nearby. The museum has raised almost $350,000

of the $1.3 million that will be needed for renovation of the 1930s-era, art deco depot. Museum officials said the depot renovation will provide additional exhibition space and an “income stream” by leasing of space for a cafe. The historic theme was emphasized when it was announced that Blue Bell Creameries gave a challenge grant to the museum which was matched by members of a prominent

longtime Brenham family — the Hasskarl family. Doug Price, the museum’s executive director, said funding for renovation of the depot is the fi rst milestone of the $1.3 million capital campaign. For further information about the museum or to make a contribution to the capital campaign, call Price at 830-8445.

Ground was symbolically broken in May on the Brenham Heritage Museum’s project to renovate the Kerrville Bus Depot at 313 E. Alamo here. Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot The Independence Baptist Church is a good tour spot for schools, churches and families. The Independence Baptist Church was begun in August 1839 and is the oldest continuously serving Baptist church in Texas. Since it began, the church has never ceased to meet. The old adobe church burned in the spring of 1872 and this building was built on top of the old foundation in the fall of 1872. Independence Baptist Church was the church of Sam Houston. In 1854, President Sam Houston was baptized in the Independence Baptist Church. His wife, Margaret Moffette Lea, eight children, and mother-in-law were also members of this church. Mrs. Houston and her mother Mrs. Nancy Lea are buried across the street “Within sound of the bell.” In 1845, the town of Independence was the wealthiest community in Texas and won the bid for a Texas university. It was named after one of its founders, R.E.B. Baylor. Baylor University opened its doors in 1846 with a total of 24 students, both male and female. (Later the women were separated into an independent institution, known as Baylor Women’s College.) The community has retained several significant historic structures and sites from its 19th-century peak. Its attractions include the Texas Baptist Historical Center; the home of Judge J.P. the Old Three Hundred of the Austin Colony; Baylor College Park; Old Independence Cemetery, a state historic site;, and Houston-Lea Family Cemetery. The Margaret Houston House is on the National Register of Historic Places. Independence Baptist Church was instrumental in founding Baylor and Mary-Hardin Baylor colleges. A number of the early President’s of Baylor were also pastors of IBC. Dr. Henry Graves was a pastor of Independence Baptist Church and the fi rst president of Baylor. Dr. George Baines (great-grandfather of President Lyndon Baines Johnson) served as a pastor of Independence Baptist Church as did many other notable Texas Baptist pastors. While the church has built a new facility across the street from the Historic Church, the church still holds services in the old sanctuary for Christmas Eve Candlelight services, Elder Stateman’s Day, weddings, and other special occasions. Independence Baptist Church continues to minister to the community and is a growing, healthy church. Although the congregation meets at the new facility across the street on most Sundays, they still meet at the historic church for special services. When the Santa Fe Railroad wanted to establish a line through town, the city leaders refused to grant it a right-of-way. By the 1880s, most railroads bypassed the town, taking trade with them. As students found it difficult to get transportation to Independence, Baylor University officials decided in 1885 to move it to a more accessible location, Waco. The women’s college was moved to Belton, where it became known as the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. The museum has over 10,000 visitors a year to the Historic Church, museum, Baylor Park, and the Houston cemetery Bring your church group, school group, or family to visit Texas’ oldest continuously serving Baptist church. The present church dates to 1872. The pulpit furniture dates to 1852. Sam Houston was baptized here and carved his and his wife’s initials in their family pew. Baylor University and the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor began here. This church has been called the mother church of Texas Baptist because of its significance to Texas Baptist history. The museum remains free thanks to the generous support of Texas Baptists. The grounds of the church are filled with some of the oldest oak trees to be found in Texas. Inside you will find the beauty of soft light streaming in from the stained glass windows imported from Belgium in 1872, or glowing from the chandelier which was imported from Germany in 1874. The old chapel, which is now part of the museum, has recently undergone an extensive renovation, including the addition of a new air conditioning system. Come visit during the operating hours of the museum, or contact the director and schedule a tour of the church and the grounds after hours.

In addition to the historic church, you can also see the burial ground of Margaret Lea Houston, Sam Houston’s widow, and the Texas Baptist Museum where such artifacts as the original 1856 church bell (pictured) are exhibited.

Brenham to hold first Texas Brew-Step Brenham’s first Texas BrewStep will be held Oct. 17 and 18 downtown. A variety of handcrafted brews from across Texas and beyond will be served in downtown Brenham’s National Register District. The charm of an historical Texas town and delicious beer. A perfect blend for a perfect day.

The event will be held from 2-7 p.m. each day. Sample the brews with a keepsake pilsner glass for $35 while supplies last. A map of sampling locations will be available at the gazebo on the courthouse square. For tickets go to: DowntownBrenham.com/brewstep. Main Street director Jennifer Eckermann said, “Glasses can

be purchased at participating merchants and online. “There will be no booths! It’s a craft beer walk, similar to our popular Uptown Swirl wine walk, except with this event, craft breweries will be sampling some of their brews.” The brews that will be available are: Brazos Valley Brewing; No Label Brewing; Peder-

nales Brewing; Galveston Island Brewing; Middleton Brewing; Saint Arnold’s Brewing; Cycler’s Brewing; Southern Star Brewing; and Lone Pint Brewing. “Main Street Promotion Committee thought of this event.” Eckermann said. “We think it will be a fun and popular event, just like the Uptown Swirl.”

Kick off the Christmas season with a stroll The Christmas Stroll is Brenham’s way to kick off the Christmas season with sights and sounds that delight young and old alike. This family-fun event kicks off Friday, Dec. 5 with the lighting of the Courthouse Square Christmas trees and is followed by the Downtown Parade of Lights. This light-filled, old-fashioned parade winds through the streets of downtown and finishes with a special appearance from Santa Clause arriving on a fire truck. After the parade, stroll the downtown shops for unique gifts and warm cider and cookies.

Chappell Hill Chappell Hill is situated in the southeast portion of Washington County, which lies halfway between Houston and Austin on U.S. 290. The town of Chappell Hill was founded in 1847 by Mary Hargrove Haller, granddaughter of Robert Wooding Chappell, for whom she named the town. Mary Haller’s husband, Jacob, was the town’s first postmaster. Mary Haller purchased the town site and it was divided into blocks, with streets and alleys laid off in a regular pattern. The sale of lots began in the fall of 1849. Situated in the heart of Stephen F. Austin’s original colony, the Chappell Hill area had seen earlier efforts at settlement along nearby creeks. In the late 1840s, the town attracted settlers from prominent families of the Old South who were drawn to the fertile land of the Brazos River with its abundant stands of native cedar. The area became an agricultural community with cotton the principal crop. Jacob and Mary Haller also built the Stagecoach Inn of Chappell Hill in 1850, which they operated until 1859 and continued under new ownership until 1871. Because the Inn was about halfway between Houston and Austin, it was a frequent stopping place for travelers along two major stagecoach lines.] The town became an important part of the Republic of Texas and later the State of Texas before the Civil War. The population reached a maximum of about 3,000 people; at the time, San Antonio and Galveston

were the largest towns at around 8,000 people. A sawmill, a railroad line, five churches, and a Masonic Lodge were built in the area. Two colleges, Soule University for men and Chappell Hill Female College for women, were founded in 1856. The men of Chappell Hill formed part of the First Texas Lancers cavalry regiment during the Civil War and fought in Missouri, Louisiana, and Arkansas. Men from Chappell Hill served in numerous renowned Confederate units, including The Texas Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers, and saw action in most of the major engagements of the Civil War. In addition, the Soule University building was used as a field hospital. The men of Chappell Hill saw action in a number of renowned Confederate units, including The Texas Brigade and Terry’s Texas Rangers. By the mid-19th century the town gained prominence in the region,

boasting sawmills, a railroad line, a Masonic Lodge, five churches, and two institutes of higher learning (the Chappell Hill Female College and Soule University for males founded in 1856). The Civil War and Reconstruction era brought violent changes to Chappell Hill, as to all the South. But the terrible yellow fever epidemic of 1867 decimated the population to such an extent that the town never fully recovered. Entire families perished, and many others left never to return. Many men who survived combat in the war lost their lives just two years after the war’s end. The town never recovered and faded into obscurity. Polish immigrants, mostly from the German partition, began to appear in the 1870s and the area was re-settled, though it did not reach the status of before. In 1889, Father Grabinger from Brenham’s St. Mary’s established St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church.

Denizens of Polish ancestry can still be found in the area surrounding the church and throughout Washington and Austin counties. Yet the town has survived and has entered a new era of growth and prosperity, while maintaining its historic charm. In 1933, the Farmers Bank of Chappell Hill refused to close its doors when so ordered by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt during a March 6 to March 10 banking freeze. The owner of the bank took out an ad in a Boston newspaper protesting the order. Present-day Chappell Hill is a small Texas town with a colorful history offering visitors year-round hospitality and charm. The town has a delightful combination of restored homes, shops and buildings. Many are found on Main Street, which has been designated as a National Register Historic District. Renowned for its blooming

Chappell Hill views, official State of Texas Bluebonnet festivals and Scarecrow Festivals each year, Chappell Hill allows you to step back in time and enjoy a pleasant outing of browsing and strolling along its streets. Main Street has been designated as a National Register Historic District by the National Register of Historic Places. Chappell Hill remains one of the best historically preserved towns in Texas. Bed and breakfast inns and unique restaurants make it an ideal “get away” any time of year. Washington County is revered as the home of the “Birthplace of Texas.” On March 2, 1836, in the community of Washington-on-the-Brazos, 59 delegates gathered under the direction of Sam Houston and George Childress to draft and sign the Declaration of Texas Independence. Following the receipt of fateful news from the Alamo, these men declared Texas “a free and sovereign nation” and went on to fight at the Battle of San Jacinto.

This area is rich with historical sites from the Republic of Texas era. In the Time of the Great Gatsby In 1924, the doors to this grand structure were opened for the members of the local social club during the era of The Great Gatsby, and the parties and events held within its walls matched that of the fictional character. Today, after years as a private residence, the Citadel is once again accepting bookings as the premier venue for social and corporate events in central Texas. “Too many generations have not had the opportunity to set foot on these grounds,” says owner Edward Smith III. “My vision is to open the doors to a spectrum of guests, as host to culinary events, champagne brunches, personal dinners, corporate events, parties, and of course, weddings.” The Smith family carefully refurbished this magnificent

jewel while still maintaining its classic Art Deco style. Wide verandas embrace both levels of the structure and provide a perfect view of the setting sun. A sweeping staircase greets you on the front drive and draws you inside where you will find both banquet and a ballroom boasting wide board floors, original steel

beams, a warm bar and inviting fireplaces. The grounds include a luxurious, original 1920’s pool, vineyard, expansive lawns and a patio for outdoor receptions and parties. Plans are included for a horse arena, skeet-shooting stations, and a lounging room for the gentlemen.

Home Sweet Farm focuses on giving its patrons foods that are naturally grown without artificial and chemical pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides.

Tractors, Shredders, Cutters, and More

Established in 2004 by founders Brad and Jenny Stufflebeam, Home Sweet Farm focuses on giving its patrons foods that are naturally grown without artificial and chemical pesticides, fertilizers or herbicides. The farm focuses on heirloom vegetables, which they sell not only at the store, but also in a CSA, or Community Supported Agriculture. The CSA, which was the fi rst CSA operating to serve the greater Houston area, has pick up locations at the Brenham Farm Store, as well as locations throughout the Houston area, in order to provide CSA members a collection of fresh, steady supply of vegetables. Their CSA, which has members from Brenham to Katy, has a warm season of 16 weeks from March to July, and an eight week cool season, which ranges from October to December. By the end of September, Home Sweet Farm will be in its new location, located on S. Park Street. That store will be open six days a week, while the farmer’s market will be held every first and third Sunday of the month, starting in October. The location gives the business a chance for better visibility with out-of-towners, who comprise roughly three-quarters of the patrons to Home Sweet Farm, and will give them a better space to work in expanded refrigerated products. Home Sweet Farm will be participating with Brazos Valley Brewing on Oct. 18 for an “October Brew Feast,” which will pair a farm-to-market dinner with the Washington County craft beer creators. The meal will be prepared by Chef Trish Eichelberger of the Alamo Drafthouse with Elizabeth McColgin and is on the same weekend as Brenham’s Texas Brew-Step.

Geocaching in the ‘Birthplace of Texas’ The Washington County Chamber of Commerce have hidden various caches across the county, in hopes of getting more people to visit the historic sites and fun locations in the area. Unlike a normal scavenger hunt, these geocaches are hidden by the locations in spaces outside as a part of the chamber’s Birthplace of Texas GeoTour. The tour has 28 locations, including a three-part view of the historic homes of Washington County. Of the 28 caches, 22 are new for the geotour. The GeoTour launched in December of 2013, after placing of the caches began in June. The concept of a geotour isn’t new, Website and Social Media Manager Jenny Mills said, but the Birth of Texas GeoTour is the fi rst in the state, with other towns in the state discussing ones for their areas in the near future. If a geocacher is among the fi rst 250 to collect 25 total points - either by fi nding the geocaches, or by eating, shopping, and staying in Washington County - a cacher can receive a collectible geocoin, which can be placed in any cache that will hold it and can be tracked online. Of the 250 coins, Mills said that 150 or so have been claimed by people who have com-

pleted the tour. Most have come from the state of Texas, but Mills said that there have been people who have visited from out-ofstate, like Colorado and Georgia, and outof-country, like the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. While she said that a majority of the instate cachers haven’t stayed multiple days

in Washington County, the comments have been positive and even if someone stays only throughout the day, it means multiple people are seeing Washington County attractions and hopefully will return. To fi nd out more about the Birthplace of Texas GeoTour and to participate, visit www.geocaching.com.

County holds rich athletic history Brenham is known for its baseball and rightfully so. The Cubs are seven-time state champions — the last title coming in 2010. But football made its own state appearance in 2013, proving the school district offers more than just a premier baseball program. The Brenham football team has made three appearances at state (2013, 2009 and 2002). Baseball won titles in 1970, ‘75, ‘76, ‘86, ‘87, ‘88 and 2010. Softball has also won several state championships along with individual student-athletes in track and field. The 2013-14 school year marked an incredible season for Cub and Cubette athletes. Besides football reaching state, the baseball team qualified for the UIL Regional Finals, the girl’s basketball team lost in the regional quarterfinals as well as did the girl’s soccer team and two boy’s relay teams and the boy’s 100 meter dash qualified for state with the 4x100 meter relay claiming bronze medals. Boy’s soccer, boy’s basketball and girl’s volleyball all reached the postseason too. Brenham High competes in UIL District 19-5A with Houston-area schools Stratford, Tomball, Tomball Memorial and Spring

City parks bring visitors from all over Brenham has an amazing park system for a city its size. Its top notch facilities bring visitors from all over the state and country. From Fireman’s Park to the newest addition at Hohlt Park, the city has about 185 acres dedicated to family-friendly activities and sporting events. Brenham parks have a lot of history connected to them. Fireman’s Park was the ďŹ rst recorded public park in Brenham, Henderson Park hosted the Juneteenth celebrations back in the 1880s and Toubin Park tells the story of the 1866 burning of Brenham. The parks and recreational attractions brings in $500,000 to $1 million in tax revenue and $6 million to $8 million that is spent here by people using those facilities each year, Blue Bell Aquatic Center The idea for the aquatic center originated in 1985 when a group of parents organized a swim meet with a team from Navasota. And the Brenham Dolphins were born. In 1995, the Blue Bell Aquatic Center was part of an announced package of beneďŹ ts citizens would receive if they approved a special sales tax for economical development and funding recreational facilities. The aquatic center has six 25-meter lanes in its competition pool, a therapy pool built with private donations and a 5,500 square-foot outdoor facility with water slides and fun scapes. Blue Bell Creameries donated $1 million to the $5.2 million facility for naming rights and citizens raised $500,000 for the heated therapy pool. The aquatic center raised its prices for the first time in 10 years due to increasing maintenance cost and to relieve the Brenham Community Development Corp. of its obligation to fund one-third of the center’s operating cost. BCDC is a city-created organization that oversees revenue from a special sales tax used for economic development and recreational facilities. It funds part of the operating cost for the aquatic center. That amount came to $200,000 a year and Blue Bell Aquatic Center increased its rates to increase revenue from users. The daily rates went up by $1 to $4 during non-summer and a $5-summer rate, the monthly rates increased by $10 to $35 and

the yearly rates increased by $50 to $250 for individuals. The fire department also sponsored the Maifest celebration from 1881 until 1941. The antique carousel, rich in community history, is a staple feature in Fireman’s Park. The carousel can be rented for tours and private parties.

1917 for cancellation of the department’s indebtedness to the city. The carousel was thought to be built by the C. W. Parker Company in Kansas. A few of the horses also bear the flags of the Armitage-Hershell Company of New York, but the horses were carved by Charles W. Dare, a hobbyhorse manufacturer who started building carousels. What set Dare’s horses apart from the more ornate horses of the Parker and Armitage-Hershell companies were the simple designs that he retained and the provision of a running martingale — a strap that connected the bridle with the chest strap preventing the horse from throwing its head back. All of the horses in the carousel feature the running martingale which confi rms that they were carved by Dare sometime between 1867 and 1901, and the carousel itself was manufactured by C. W. Parker. The carousel was found in a

field near the Clay Community and purchased by citizens from Brenham and Washington County in 1932, where it was restored and used during the county fair that year. The Brenham Jaycees were the caretakers of the city owned carousel for many years, making the operation and maintenance very successful. The Jaycees undertook a restoration project of more than $10,000 which was donated by individuals and businesses. The Brenham Noon Lions Club took over the carousel and, in 1999, removed much of the dirt under it and installed a brick paved floor making it easier to maintain the carousel and the building. The city closed the carousel in 2005 and due to damage to the horses and began a restoration project which lasted three years. Henderson Park was named after Ed Henderson after he sold the land to the city of Brenham in segments to form the basis of the park. Juneteenth celebrations were held at Henderson Park along with hosting an all-black pro minor baseball team. The park was once home to a large pavilion that hosted dances featuring legendary musicians such as B.B. King and his guitar Lucile, Joe Turner and Little Richard. The park was also home to all the athletic events for the black community. PARKS continued on page 43

Learn about the underground cisterns running throughout Brenham used to store rainwater for public fire fighting at Toubin Park, the newest addition to the park system directly in downtown Brenham.

The city converted two of the fields into baseball fields to accommodate the growing Washington Little League tournaments in 2009. Clinton G. Anderson sold three parcels of land to Brenham in 1976, 1979 and 1980 and the park was named after Anderson’s mother. Brenham paid a total of $30 for the three parcels of land and entered into an agreement with Washington County to maintain half the land. Toubin Park People can learn about the underground cisterns running throughout Brenham used to store rainwater for public fire fighting at Toubin Park, the newest addition to the park system directly in downtown Brenham. The large system of public cisterns in early Brenham was a rarity and no other Texas cities were known to instal public cisterns or provide public services so early. The land was donated by Leon and Mimi Toubin to create an area where people can learn about the history of Brenham, follow the details of the 1866 burning of Brenham and the large gunfight that led to that fi re, and learn how Brenham citizens banded together to protect themselves and their properties from oppressive Union Troops during the Reconstruction. The Brenham Park and Recreation Advisory Board makes recommendations to the Brenham City Council to improve the parks system and attract more visitors to Brenham’s athletic facilities. The advisory board has a five year master plan that allows planners to use the park space effectively and plan for growth including adding future parks and future fields. After all, Brenham and Washington County is the “Baseball Capital of Texas.”

Enjoy yourself on, off land at Lake Somerville Lake Somerville State Park complex consists of four units: Birch Creek, Nails Creek, Lake Somerville Trailway, and the Somerville Wildlife Management Area. It is northwest of Brenham in Lee and Burleson counties. Birch Creek is 2,365 acres in Burleson County on the north shore, and Nails Creek consists of 3,155 acres in Lee County on the south shore near the west end of the reservoir. The two units are connected by a 13-mile trailway system. The Somerville Wildlife Management Area (WMA) consists of 3,180 acres with the Yegua Creek Compartment in southwest Burleson County and the Nails Creek Compartment in northeast Lee County. The Somerville Reservoir was constructed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Work was started in June 1962, and deliberate impoundment of water was begun in January of 1967. The dam is located on Yegua Creek, 20 miles upstream from its confluence with the Brazos River,

and about two miles south of Somerville. Somerville Reservoir covers 11,630 acres with a shoreline of 85 miles. Its main purposes are flood control, municipal water supply and recreation. The state park complex was leased from the federal government in 1969 and opened in 1970. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department manages the Somerville WMA under a license agreement and in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Flag Pond is a 350-acre impoundment in the Yegua Creek watershed; it is located within the Lake Somerville State Park along the Somerville Trailway. The pond is a natural depression which has served as wetland habitat for waterfowl wintering (mid-October to mid-February) in the Lake Somerville vicinity. Flag Pond was originally developed by a private hunting club in 1926. Enjoy, but do not disturb historical places. If you find an artifact, leave it in place and let park staff know.

County has designated areas for public hunting Deer season is drawing closer with dove season already underway, and hunters are purchasing all the gear they need for the season. For just $48 a hunter can purchase a public hunting permit which allows them to hunt on designated public hunting grounds across the state. There are three such public hunting grounds in Washington County, one southwest of Chappell Hill and two in Carmine. “Hunters will receive a map in the mail that shows them all the land by county,” game warden Jonny Heaton said. “The book will also show them what they can hunt on the land.” Some areas have dove and water fowl hunting, some have big game such as deer and some lands have all three designations. Private land owners lease land to the state for public hunts, and this gives hunters who can’t afford the hunt outfitting fees to have access to public hunting lands. “Hunters have to respect the landowner,” Heaton said. “Mainly the property is walkin, they can’t drive all over the land and they have to clean up after themselves.” The $48 fee goes back into the program to lease more land for public hunts, and a percentage of purchased supplies and materials is used to make the land more habitable for

animals and research programs which help the wild life. “Hunting controls the number of animals based on how well the land can care for that species,” Heaton said. “If the animal population is too high then disease will increase and wipe out more animals than hunting would. “Hunting keeps the diseases down and protects the quality of the animals reproducing.” Hunters benefit the economy in other ways as well, Heaton said. They stay in hotels, dine in restaurants and spend money in local shops and stores. Some game requires a special license, for instance dove hunters need a migratory stamp on their permit, duck and geese require a water foul stamp and a big game stamp is needed for deer hunting.

Dove hunters can only use shot guns which hold no more than three shells, they can hunt from 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset, and can bag 15 doves per day, Heaton said. General deer season begins Nov. 6 and ends Jan. 2 and hunting with muzzle loaded guns starts Jan. 3 and ends Jan. 16. Legal bucks need a 13 inch or greater inside spread if the antlers are forked, but if one or both of the buck’s antlers are unbranched then they are legal no matter the spread, Heaton said. The bag limit is four deer, two bucks and two doe. “The unbranched bucks are considered inferior, and we want to improve the quality of the bucks, so hunters will take these out of the breeding pool,” Heaton said. “We have the spread limits to give the bucks a chance to mature and reproduce.”

Relax in Rustic Round Top, one of the smallest incorporated communities in Texas, is on the old La Bahia Road between La Grange and Brenham in Fayette County. The earliest settlers were Englishmen who came to the area from other parts of the United States. The family of Stephen Townsend arrived from Florida in 1826, and the name Townsend was the first to be associated with the site of Round Top. The family established a Presbyterian church, Florida Chapel and founded a Masonic lodge. The Townsend family had the distinction of sending more men to the battle of San Jacinto than any other family. Joel Robinson, another Round Top resident, was the captor of Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. His father, John Robinson, was a member of the First Congress of Texas. John Rice Jones Jr. settled in the Round Top area in 1831 and in

1835 was made the first postmaster general of Texas by the provisional government. Other important names associated with the earliest settlers were Taylor, Ledbetter and Alexander. The Ledbetter land was the site of the first Round Top Academy. By the mid-1830s Round Top was identified as Jones Post Office. The English were soon supplemented by Germans. In the early 1840s, Alwin H. Soergel, author, historian, musician, and member of the Adelsverein, settled in the Round Top area, bringing with him the beginnings of the Germanic traditions that characterize the area. He built a white house with an octagonal tower, which by 1847 was listed as the United States post office, with Henry A. Robertson as postmaster. The odd-shaped tower gave rise to the name Round Top. By 1850 Round Top had a

Round Top population of 150, two stores, two blacksmith shops, two taverns, a post office and a line of tri-weekly stages serving the predominantly German citizenry. According to some sources the first Round Top Fourth of July celebration, held in 1851, gave the community the distinction of having the oldest continuous Independence Day celebra-

tion west of the Mississippi. During the Civil War, Round Top served as a recruiting station for the northern half of the county. In 1866 the Rev. Adam Neuthard organized a Lutheran congregation; the massive old stone church completed in 1867 remained in use until 1991, along with its pipe organ carved

Education, music, language studies and the arts played an important role in the lives of residents, and the cultural arts characterized Round Top throughout the 19th century. Chartered in 1870, Round Top is located on Cummins Creek in northern Fayette County. The town is said to have received its name from “the house with the round top”, an early stagecoach mileage

designation that, at the time, was located about a mile northeast of the town’s present site. The first settlers were prosperous Anglo-American plantation owners who came here as early as 1826 and were active in political and military affairs.
