oy Cockrell wanted to build a place in Lampasas where families could have fun; a place with a bowling alley, an arcade, puttputt golf, and a restaurant. His vision soon came to life and quickly became Putters & Gutters, likely the most unique family fun center in the Texas Hill Country. The famous place where they proudly proclaim “fun is what we do” is open in Marble Falls with a newly expanded version, promising to entertain and amaze with seven acres of exciting
As the name implies, there is a bowling alley with twenty lanes. Leagues are available for fun and sanctioned bowling for the more serious bowlers who enjoy tournament play. Local venues attract top talent for live performances
By Connie Swinney As Reckless Kelly launched their performance on April 9 on the Burnet square, resident Angela Moore and her family basked in the breathless thrill that comes with front row seats. “When you’re outdoors, you can feel the music and go with it,” she said. “You can sway to the music. You can dance. It’s all good.” Moore served as co-chairwoman of Bluebonnet Festival organizers who invited the band to perform.
Down to Earth “We knew we were going to get up close,” she added. “It’s an earth-moving experience.” Like hundred of others around the outdoor stage, the Moores have followed the group, known for a rockin’ Red Dirt and Texas country sound, since their debut on the national stage in the 1990s. “The two front men, Cody and Willy Braun, are from Idaho, and we’ve been following them since they moved to Austin,” she said. “My grandkids were up there singing. We teared up when Willy looked at my granddaugther and flicked the (guitar) pick to her.” Outdoor concert performances have become a staple of the Hill Country with renowned and award-winning artists accepting invites to play venues off the big city path. In the 1990s and 2000s, the likes of David Allen Coe, Asleep at the Wheel’s Ray Benson, honky tonk legend Joe Ely and Jimmie Vaughan made it a point to rock the crowds under the stars in the parks and rural concert venues in the Highland Lakes. “It’s small town. Like a lot of Texas music artists, they don’t sell themselves to the Devil like going to
Nashville,” Moore explained of their accessibility. “They don’t have a big label telling them what to do.” A Bit of Soul One such artist who has succeeded in both worldwide and local stages is John Arthur Martinez. He is well known for his appearances and second place win in the first year of the nationally-syndicated Nashville Star. The show aired for six seasons on USA Network in the early 2000s. Since then, the singer/songwriter has recorded several albums, including a studio album for Dualtone Records, which produced a single on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. Martinez,who grew up in the Hill Country, has chosen to reside and perform close to home, along with international gigs, due to the local appeal and support from both residents and visitors. “It’s the fans that have enabled me to make a living. This area is a draw for people just aesthetically,” Martinez said. “Fans plan their vacations to come here and some to come see our shows.” When at home, Martinez performs regularly at Trailblazer Grille, 216 Main St. in Burnet. “It’s nice to see the regulars who come support those shows on a weekly or monthly basis,” he said. “They know that I’m sharing a bit of my soul. When they react to it, it means I’ve connected to some experience they’ve had as well.” Martinez and fellow singer/songwriter Pauline Reese perform at the venue the fourth Tuesday of the month. “Those shows also lead to national and international (bookings). We’re still booked to go to Europe next year in May and June,” he said. “Performing locally is still an amazing experience. “I surround myself with the most talented people available,” he added. “That’s the calibar of music we’re bringing to the stages here.” Intimate Appeal Brass Hall owner Norman Lucas shared insight that talented performers continue to accept invitations to perform live in small town venues not only for the fans but for their own search for “serenity.”

emotionally affects them.” The venue, known for an ecclectic mix of talent, is nestled in the heart of Marble Falls at 909 Third St. “One of the cool parts of our venue is our shows are very intimate,” Lucas explained. “The average artist can fully engage their fans. In a bigger venue, you typically tune out your audience.” Live performers through the years have included AJ Castillo, Slim Thug & Zro, Sub Dudes, Jon B, Stoney LaRue and Wade Bowen, attracting hundreds of fans. “We started bringing in big acts in 2016,” he said. “What’s unique around here is it’s very diverse. Whether it’s metal, hard rock, country, hip hop, R&B, Tejano or Latin, there’s a huge fan base here.” Audience experience as well as quality live performances have compelled musicians to appear and keep live music venues thriving. “It’s embedded in a Texan’s DNA to love live

By Judith Shabram The defining moments in our lives are those that forever characterize who we are, and how we respond to them will define who we become in our families, communities, and nation. One of those defining periods was World War II, which brought nations together and divided countries as people sought to make sense of the violence, the irrational destruction of entire cities, and the wanton loss of life that accompanied this unchecked anger and desire for power. Empowered Women’s Fitness Center
Encouraging women to reach their optimum fitness levels

M
ost of us struggle with balancing life and maintaining an acceptable level of physical fitness. For women, this is especially challenging due to dual roles in the family. Many women work outside the home but are still expected to maintain a stable family dynamic. Lydia Nixon, a woman who has balanced a career and a family, understands that women have special needs, especially in fitness, and that time is often a consideration. In joking, she says, “I started the Empowered Women’s Fitness Center because I had four hours left in my day” Another consideration for Lydia was, “When I Page 22
worked out at a gym, I felt uneasy with just men.” This desire to help women find a comfortable and safe environment to pursue fitness has prompted Lydia to open Empowered Women’s Fitness Center. She shared that she had reached a point in her life when she felt encouraged to go after her dream. “It was difficult to find women to go to the gym with you.” Her awareness of the need to help women find the confidence to get back into a healthy lifestyle prompted Lydia to open Empowered Women’s Fitness Center in Bertram with a second location in Burnet at 805 W Buchannan Drive Suite B. The trend is shifting nationwide in this direction for several reasons. First, women-only gyms and
fitness centers promote a more holistic approach provide a safe place to network, mingle and make new friends as they encourage women with classes that fit individual needs and age groups. Lydia prefers the smaller community aspect of her fitness center, decorated in bright colors of green, pink, and orange and walls framed in positive affirmations. Empowered Women’s Fitness Center classes are suited to all fitness levels and age groups. Traditional classes include Zumba, Yoga, Pilates, H.I.I.T. (High-Intensity Interval Training), and a Strength and Agility Bootcamp that emphasizes a combination of high-intensity strength and conditioning exercises alongside calisthenics. Other classes include Barre a workout technique inspired by elements of ballet, yoga Pilates, and strength training. Barre focuses on low-impact, high-intensity movements designed to improve agility and flexibility while strengthening and toning muscles. In addition, Empowered Women’s Fitness Center offers Pound, a high-energy cardio session that utilizes Ripstix, lightly weighted drumsticks developed especially for exercising. This unique total body workout designed for all fitness levels combining cardio, conditioning, and strength training with yoga and Pilates moves is the perfect atmosphere for reducing stress as you exercise the entire body. If your goal is to improve overall coordination and burn a massive amount of calories, try Kickboxing, a high-intensity upbeat exercise program offered in Burnet, and two days a week in Bertram. Finally, Empowered Women offers a wide array of classes for our Seniors and beginners that focus on stretching and using low weights, small balls, and resistance bands as you give attention to balance, coordination, and stability. That includes Athletically Aging, Stronger by the Decades, Boom Muscle and Zumba Gold. Instructors Michayla Jude, Katrina Friesen, Laura Murray, Jennifer Anderson, Amanda Jaynes, and Cassey Allen, Training Coordinator and
Personal Trainer/Nutritional Coach, all share the same goal; empowering women to live a healthy life through physical exercise, socialization with other women to bring the mental support necessary to feed mind and body. In addition, every other month in the spring and summer, Empowered Women’s Fitness Center offers “Mommy & Me” events, and there are free 30-minute classes at the Bertram Library each month. The best fuel, food and fun on the lake!

hen some think of a convenience store with amenities, an image that comes to mind is a bustling one on U.S. 281 or Interstate 10. Drivers can take a break from the open road as they fuel up with Ethanol-free fuel, drinks, and the best burgers on the lake. Some are heading to the lakes and searching for boat fuel, fishing gear, or just a day on the water boating, tubing, or waterskiing. For visitors, souvenirs are the name of the game. Wakepoint LBJ has a more aquatic location, as it’s at 14757 West Farm to Market Road 1431 in Kingsland, where the Llano River flows into the Colorado River, which then flows into the Lake LBJ reservoir. Jody Bowers, who manages Wakepoint LBJ for owner Scott Westland, said, “The business, part rooftop bar, part convenience store, and part

barbecue, was converted from an old Valero’s. The LBJ part of the name is obvious since it’s on the lake. The owner’s son, Brady Westlund, an accomplished wakeboard rider who was on Baylor’s wakeboard team, came up with the name.” The previous owner had the store and single-wide trailers a person could rent. Westland bought it following an environmental study when the property came onto the market. “We decided we would put a complex there that incorporated the convenience store,” Bowers said. “Commercial office space was also for rent on the second story.” Down by the water, they have a ship store, which Bowers described as a mini-convenience store for basics during the season. “It also sells fuel on the water for boaters,” he said.
Wakepoint’s “The Spot” is where the patio and restaurant complex are located on top of the ship store. “The ideas we implemented included maximizing the property to provide everything that Kingsland needed,” Bowers said. Wakepoint LBJ opened October 1, 2018, right before the flood a few years ago that brought much damage to waterfront properties in the Highland Lakes area. “We had to overcome those challenges,” Bowers said. “Luckily, the main convenience store wasn’t damaged, although the ship store was. Everything was damaged in our barbecue shack, and it was a challenging year getting repairs made.” The store sells fuel, ice, beer, soda, chips, and features live music. “We just booked country music artist Jason Boland, and he’ll be here July 16th for Wakefest,” Bowers said. “We have different entertainment options through the season.” Boaters that frequent the lake for activities like that Wakepoint is convenient. This year, they’ve added liquor to their wine and beer offerings. “People seem to like the laid-back atmosphere,” Bowers said. “We have a really good mix of great
food on our menus. Great food, great drinks, a family-friendly, fun atmosphere. People bring their kids and dogs. “On the major holiday weekends, we have a bouncy house for kids. We’ll have someone doing face painting, and we provide lots of activities for the community. We try to give back to the community and our customers.” And if that’s not enough, Bowers pointed out there’s a “pretty nice sunset” from Wakepoint’s patio. D
anna Laine Doremus, the owner of The Oil Tap, located in the historic Old Oak Square in Marble Falls, is not offended when people are confused by the name of her business. On the contrary, she views it as an opportunity to expound on the exciting world of essential oils, infused balsamic vinegar, and flavored olive oils. Stepping into The Oil Tap is reminiscent of a wine tasting bar. An extensive collection of bottles containing exotic flavored oils and balsamic vinegar line the counter. The only dilemma is which ones to sample and how many to take home.
Traditionally, oils have been placed in pots called a Fusti, allowing unguided sampling as you browse the shop. As with wine, self-guided samplings can leave you with unanswered questions and buying products that you really didn’t like. Danna Laine and her Experience Associates desire to educate, inform and send you home with more than a bottle of oil or balsamic. The goal is to help you understand the complexity of the flavors and how to use them, whether you are enhancing a salad, marinating a steak, or grilling your favorite meats. The olive oils are quality sourced from Italy, Greece, and California and only following interviews with the vendors and sampling the oils to assure that Danna Laine’s standards are met. The aged balsamic vinegars have no caramel coloring, thickening agents, or additives of any type. The versatility of these products is only confined to your creativity in the kitchen. Llano’s newest family restaurant on the Square

egends are not born but created by people who find someone or something memorable and continue to share it with others. The Trailblazer Grille has become a Hill Country Legend because they serve classic comfort food, made from scratch, filled with love and “Hill Country Hospitality.” The first restaurant on the Square in Burnet quickly became an anchor attracting locals and visitors who flock to the Texas Hill Country to enjoy the area’s magnificent lakes and scenic views. Liz and Trace Catlin’s original vision to provide good honest Texas-style food in a family environment has Page 36
earned them numerous awards not only as the best restaurant in Burnet but a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor three years in a row. Much has changed for them since they pulled their 33’ RV to Burnet and purchased a plot of ground for their future home. But, what has not changed, is their commitment to serving the highest quality food in a fun and welcoming environment. When Trace began looking at opening another Trailblazer Grille, he was approached by six locations that needed a good restaurant. Interestingly, the Trailblazer in Llano is virtually in the same location as the Burnet restaurant, on the Square across from the courthouse. “We are
thrilled to be in Llano, everything just fell into place, and the timing was right for all that we have to offer.” The new location did require some extensive remodeling, but the finished restaurant, although not a mirror image of the one in Burnet, is designed to maintain the original appearance and flavor that has made the Trailblazer Grille famous. Trace shared that the biggest challenge was staffing with people who understood the “Trailblazer Way” and the level of excellence that he and his wife, Liz, have continued to uphold. If you are a fan of the Trailblazer in Burnet, much will be familiar with the Llano location, like hand-cut steaks grilled and seasoned to perfection and the famous chicken pot pie. You will also find classic meatloaf, chicken fried chicken and steak, catfish plates, and a local favorite, the ½ lb. Angus Burger. All the dressings are homemade, as well as the desserts like buttermilk, coconut, and chocolate crème pies, along with their renowned peach cobbler. Trailblazer continued on page 39

Happy Hour is Monday -Friday from 4-6 pm featuring select beers for $2 and house wines for $3 and $2 off any appetizer. T
he measure of a man is not in what he has accomplished but how he accomplished it. For Norman Lucas—a man who sees a need then seeks the solution; the answer lies in the simple philosophy of putting others first. Norman, CEO of Elevated Minds Music Group, the owner of the Brass Hall music venue in Marble Falls, got his start serving others in New Orleans’ Lafitte Housing Project. He became part of a 19 member youth group called LYMAC, Lafitte Youth Making a Change. As a teen, he asked his counterparts, “How can we serve people in our own community?” Collectively, they decided to open a pizza restaurant since no local businesses would deliver to the residents of his housing development.
LYMAC worked to receive a mayoral economic development grant and open the restaurant across the street from the housing development. The group also secured a contract from the New Orleans Housing Authority to paint the hallways of the development as part of a beautification project. His innate qualities for service and handling business won him the NFTE (National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship) national award for Entrepreneur of the Year at age 19 as he transitioned into the music field he remains in today. He always had a vision for a music company that would have the ability to handle everything in-house and to maximize the artists’ potential to maintain control of their projects. “I wanted to help them navigate the ins and outs of the industry,” Brass Hall continued on page 45 2022 Spring/Summer Page 43

However, the dream was postponed in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina severely damaged the Recording Studio and Headquarters. Just before Katrina devastated New Orleans, several locations were scouted for Elevated Minds expansion, and the potential of Austin, Texas, was chosen as a viable option for expansion. Already home to South by Southwest, an annual meeting of film, interactive media, and music festivals, Austin was a perfect fit for a growing company. While developing the company in Austin postKatrina, an opportunity connected Marble Falls resident Anthony’” Tony” Jones to Norman and venue owner Grant Dean. The three would discuss live entertainment in Marble Falls and the current status of the building. This live music venue in Marble Falls, originally named Lorraine’s, was started by Grant Dean and local music legend Debbie Walton. The name Lorraine was derived from the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, where a wide range of musicians would meet and record at Stax Records. Lorraine’s was several names before eventually being rebranded to Brass Hall. Several artists such as Joe Ely, Bob Schneider, The Subdudes, and Junior Brown have performed
in Marble Falls. The lake view of the city while crossing the bridge offers unique visual characteristics of the multi-cultural community. Brass Hall, in Marble Falls, was born from the desire to bring quality entertainment to the Hill Country that would offer entertainment from options for all walks of life. “Our vision was to utilize Elevated Minds’ connections to provide high-quality entertainment and offer a different kind of experience in an intimate environment with big-name entertainers who still enjoyed the appeal of smaller audiences. A lot of the artists like to hang out after the performances allowing the patrons to engage with them on a personal level,” said Norman. The successes of the last seven years pay tribute to a man who has maintained the highest level of integrity in a highly competitive and challenging industry. He has done this while keeping his eye on the community’s needs. Upcoming Entertainers range from Bob Schneider, Lil Flip, Dirty River Boys, and Zoso, the ultimate Led Zeppelin, to contemporary R&B artist Jon B. One Swanky Shop By Judith Shabram
A
famous man named William Shakespeare once wrote, “ What’s in a name? A Rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” Although One Swanky Shop on Highway 281 in Marble Falls may not be as famous as William Shakespeare, the name is undoubtedly one that invokes discussion as to what might be inside the store. The pleasant surprise is that One Swanky Shop is what you expect and so much more, qualifying as one of Marble Falls best-kept secrets. People often Page 50
comment on their first visit, “I had no idea that you had all of this.” They are referring to the profusion of colors that define individual rooms displaying inspired designs illustrating the creativity of the staff at One Swanky Shop. Debbie Cherry, one of the owners, is a native Texan who began her career in Odessa, Texas. It was apparent from the beginning that she had a gift for recognizing design elements imaginatively, placing her solidly into the interior design world in West Texas. Like many visitors to the Highland Lakes, Debbie
fell in love with the Hill Country, opened a store, and put down roots. She also fell in love with the diversity of the client base, from ranches to lakefront vacation homes. Over the years, her horizons have expanded, and although she still has clients in Midland and Odessa, Debbie has traveled to Houston, North Carolina, Las Vegas, and Florida. Her motto is “Have tape measure will travel.” One Swanky Shop has been in eight different buildings, including one on the Historic Main Street in Marble Falls. The current location on Hwy 281 has allowed Debbie and her professional staff to expand into the most extensive design showroom in the Hill Country, becoming a resource for outside designers and their clients. The selection of wallpapers, bedding, and trim is comprehensive, and fun finds populate all shop corners. However, the goal is to have something for everyone, from candles, dishes, frames, and seasonal gifts to chocolates from The Sweet Shop in Fort Worth. graceful in the air. The Zephyr is a C-47, the military version of the Douglas DC3, the type of aircraft used to drop paratroopers on the beach in Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944. This celebrated aircraft is scheduled to “return to service” in 2022 after undergoing a restoration by the Highland Lakes Squadron. However, the rescue effort is only a part of the story that people like Lloyd Nolan began. The planes were in desperate need of repair in many cases, and they also needed pilots to fly them, who were qualified for the specific aircraft. The love of flying and the desire to keep the history of these amazing machines alive has brought together, at HLS, retired military service pilots, private pilots, commercial pilots including a married couple from New Hampshire, and many people who appreciate this history and the sacrifices so many made, to share with the general public the honor and experience of flying in one of these legendary

The training was amazingly short for the pilots who initially flew these machines, encompassing perhaps only about 200 hours of total flight time. However, with the war raging, the need was overwhelming to get as many in the air as possible. At this time, it was known as the U. S. s an adjective the word destination describes a special place that people visit with a specific purpose in mind. Rae’s RBar & Grill on Main Street in Marble Falls aka RBar is definitely the place to immerse yourself in local color and enjoy unique dishes, many with a backstory, and appreciate the distinctives of Historic Main Street. The owner of Rae’s, Rachel Lorance, is as distinctive as the establishment itself. Known to everyone as Rae, she is the life force behind a restaurant that was once only one of two eating establishments on Main Street. Rae grew up in Houston and started tending bar when she was only eighteen. “I love bartending because it is so high energy.” After meeting Rae, you can believe that the was probably the local therapist behind the bar in Houston, but her husband had other plans and purchased a pool company in Marble Falls so the family relocated. Rae fell in love with the area considering it a great Page 58
place to raise kids and decided she never wanted to leave. Because she loved being behind the bar Rae took a part time job at RBar, already a local landmark, 2-3 nights a week. When the owner decided to sell he instantly thought of Rae. In a mad moment she took everything she had and invested it into the restaurant.
“The first day as the owner I saw myself bartending and having fun, I know how to do this job”, but soon discovered that it was also hard work to learn the entire business. “After nine years I still learn something new every day and nothing surprises me; it all makes sense now.” Rae made a lot of improvements to her restaurant one of which was to move the enormous horseshoe shaped bar out of the middle of the room and put the bar along the wall opening up space for more tables. She also painted the building a softer color and expanded the kitchen. Rae bought all of the recipes from the original owner but then expanded the menu adding her

own creative ideas. Even though some still refer to her restaurant as RBar she is primarily an eating establishment that employs both of the original cooks. The menu however has undergone an amazing transformation and has settled itself as “rustic Texas comfort food” like Mama’s Chicken, a house favorite featuring a grilled chicken breast topped with bacon, jack cheese, avocado, and Pico served along with a fresh salad and homemade mashed potatoes. The heart and soul however of Rae’s RBar &Grill is her heart for the locals who frequent the restaurant. When she bought it there was a grilled chicken sandwich on the menu that a young man named Carl urged her to keep, so she did. Carl was later tragically killed in a motorcycle accident and today Rae still has his favorite dish available and calls it Carl’s Cowpoke. You also need to know that Rae’s meats are smoked in house and that almost everything is made from scratch. Rae Lorance is one of those working owners who jokingly says “I hope that changes someday” but to those who know her, Rae’s RBar & Grill would be inconceivable without Rae Lorance. She is the energy force that “stuck it out” when there was no thriving and vibrant Main Street that we see today and the bartender who still loves creating new and
unusual drinks. The people of Marble Falls must agree because she won the gold in the 2021 Reader’s Choice awards for Best All Round Bar as well as awards for her margaritas and other unique drinks. Rae also has a passion for celebrating holidays by dressing up and strongly suggesting that the staff join in the fun. In the past they have observed National Tortilla Day, National Kalua Day and a host of other well know and mostly obscure holidays. Rae’s philosophy is “Any holiday will do.” Added to the fun is the fact that Rae’s has the only dog friendly deck in downtown Marble Falls and there are even doggie water bowls and snacks. Good food, good fun and lots of quirky signs in a laid back and casual atmosphere is how most people describe Rae’s RBar & Grill. uisine is traditionally defined by its roots in a specific geographic area and is easily recognized by conventional and familiar types of food. However, that mold is broken by the diversity of what people label New Orleansstyle cooking that can run the gamut from Cajun, Creole, French, and Spanish-inspired dishes to the intensely flavorful cuisine we call Soul Food, resulting in a fusion of complex flavors.
The story of The Real New Orleans Style Restaurant is entwined with the chronicle of a church that was delivered from two hurricanes, Katrina and Rita, before settling in the heart of the Texas Hill Country. In 2005 a call was made to members of the Smoking for Jesus Ministry in New Orleans, alerting of the impending hurricane and advising them to pack for three days which was standard procedure because they could always return.

It is often referred to as an eclectic hybrid of African American, French and Spanish influences dating back to the time before the Louisiana Purchase. This time was different. Over 50 families left for a church camp in Lumberton, Texas, only to find that another hurricane, Rita, was on its way to the gulf. Their three days evolved into a journey similar to Moses’s 40 years in the wilderness. their church and homes were destroyed by Katrina. The church had utilized their restaurant in New Orleans as a ministry tool in an area of the city known for drugs and prostitution. Erin shared how they were able to open the restaurant again in Marble Falls. “One day, someone came and knocked on the administrative door at the church. She told us that the Lord had told her we were supposed to be in Marble Falls, and I have a spot for you.” That was in 2009, the year the New Orleans Saints won the Superbowl. Chef Erin attended school for business with no thought of a career in the food industry. However, his mother was a fantastic cook, and after he left home, he often called her to ask how to prepare his favorite recipes. During that time, Erin worked in entertainment with the digital cable industry and later for what is known in New Orleans as a “boiling restaurant.” As the name implies, he boiled a lot of crawfish. After leaving the restaurant, he returned to cable work in Baton Rouge, where Erin Legier discovered that he had a calling on his life from God. He believes that” God will align you with what He wants you to do. So, at 30 years old, I gave my life to Jesus knowing that I was called to serve.” Eventually, his path led him to Pastor Willie Monnet Sr. of the Smoking for Jesus Ministry, who had a
vision for running businesses within the church as ministries. As the name implies, the food at The Real New Orleans Style Restaurant is what Erin describes as Southern, Creole Cajun comfort food, from smothered cabbage with red beans and rice to slow-cooked smothered okra sautéed in peppers, onions, and garlic. Everything is authentic, and many dishes begin with the holy trinity of Creole Cajun cooking, peppers, onions, and celery to build the flavor profiles. Many of the recipes have been passed down from previous generations of New Orleans families who understood the need to preserve the traditions of their unique style of food preparation that included a lot of love and respect for the ingredients. One of the most popular dishes is Seafood Legier, catfish and shrimp grilled to perfection, served over rice, and topped with Crawfish Etouffee. Most people who are familiar with Jambalaya will find the Deconstructed Rice a flavorful divergence. The dish begins with Cajun Rice Jambalaya topped with Andouille sausage, sauteed chicken, and shrimp and then tossed in a tomato-based Creole sauce. A favorite appetizer is Charbroiled Oysters. n May of 2020, Dr. Joshua White visited the Hill Country for an interview that would result in purchasing his current dental practice from Dr. Joshua Miles. Dr. Miles’s family is in Idaho, and he decided to return home to them. Dr. White recalls, “we fell in love with the area and decided this is where we want to raise our kids.” He left his practice in Beaumont, bought the practice in Burnet, and began a challenging year because of lockdowns and various other restrictions. None of these things, however, moved him from his lifelong goals in the dental profession. Dr. White’s uncle was in the profession and a significant influence in his life in that direction. “When I was 14 years old, I wanted to be a dentist and stayed on that path. My uncle was a loving mentor who gave me guidance for my career.” Life’s trials shape us in one way or another, and for the White family, the testing came during Dr. White’s last year of college. He married his wife Brooklynn while still in dental school, and soon their

first child was born. Then, during his senior year, he was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer. The chemotherapy rendered him useless for the week following treatment forcing him to consistently play “catch up” with the actual patients that senior dental students were required to handle. As a cancer survivor, he still has to visit the oncologist every six months but insists that the experience made them much stronger as a family. Upon taking over the office in Burnet, he began with an entire staff of professionals who had been serving the community with Dr. Miles for years. However, with the explosive growth in Burnet County comes a need for more services, and one of those is healthcare, specifically in the dental profession. Dr. Joshua White recognizes the necessity for filling the gap with the influx of people moving into Burnet and the surrounding towns. He has added additional days, more options for routine cleaning appointments, and a new associate doctor, Dr. Anne Shedlosky who is an Austin native. He also has plans for a 1500 square ft. addition to the current office site at 603 Buchanan Drive in

Park It or Take a hike!
Compiled by Connie Swinney One of the most endearing and joyful aspects of the Highland Lakes involves the natural environment which beckon locals and visitors alike to flock to several waterways and pristine nature scenes – all while maintaining access to public amenities. In municipal and state park venues, local entities insist on maintaining waterway access that is free to the public, along with outdoor activity opportunities for hiking, picnicking, sporting events and other fitness and fun festivities. From Marble Falls and Granite Shoals to Kingsland and Llano, the area’s parks beckons one to go outside, soak in the sun and enjoy a place blessed with mostly pleasant conditions in the spring and summer. Marble Falls Parks and Trailheads One stretch of the city of Marble Falls trail system remains tucked away in the heart of the city connecting four parks. Backbone Creek Hike and Bike Trail is approximately 1.3 miles in length running along Backbone Creek from Lakeside Park to Westside Park. The trail surface is 10-feet wide

Points of interest along the trail include Lakeside Park, Falls Creek Park (which includes a skatepark), a manmade waterfall at Andrea’s Pass (raised foot bridge over the creek), Johnson Park, Madolyn’s Crossing (a relocated, historic iron truss bridge) and Westside Park at the intersection of 2nd Street and Avenue Q comprised of 13 acres along a portion of Backbone Creek. • Westside Park, 1610 2nd St., is located at the intersections of Avenue Q and R. The park includes the hiking trail as well as a playscape, disk golf course, dog park, basketball court and both an enclosed and open pavilion to reserve for events. • Johnson Park, 230 S. Avenue J, is nestled in a pecan tree-shaded area where Backbone Creek and Whitman Branch flow into Lake Marble Falls. There is also a designated leash-free zone for dogs located in the venue. Features include two open-
air covered pavilions to reserve for events, public picnic tables and barbecue pits, a softball field, a boat ramp and restroom facilities. • Lakeside Park is located at 305 Buena Vista Dr. in Marble Falls, along the shoreline of Lake Marble Falls. Amenities include a municipal swimming pool, enclosed pavilion for rentals, manmade beach, limestone stone seating and restroom facilities. The public has access from the venue to fish and swim in the lake and Backbone Creek. Non-motorized boats also have access points into the waterway at the north end of the park and the south end of the venue at the confluence of the lake and Backbone Creek. Motorized vessels can put into the water on Backbone Creek in Johnson Park and the Hays Addition boat ramp on Lakeshore Drive. •Whitman Branch Hike and Bike Trail is approximately .8 miles in length running along Whitman Branch Creek, Avenues J and K, and 3rd Street. The trail surface is 7-feet wide and is all concrete with a stretch of the trail meandering alongside youth soccer fields. For more information, go to marblefallstx.gov. Burnet Parks • Haley-Nelson Park, a 51-acre park, is located on Garden Trails Road off West Buchanan Drive (Texas 29 West) in Burnet. The venue features soccer fields, an amphitheater, disk golf course, a picnic pavilion and two washer pit areas as well as walking and hiking trails. This 131acre tract is the site of city hall and Quarry Park. Quarry Park, which has restroom amenities, has covered tennis courts, a butterfly garden, a ‘Hike, Bike and Run’ trail, a Wildlife Viewing Station and soccer and pickleball courts. The trails are dotted with granite benches, tables, monuments and exercise stations and wind alongside an old quarry. The system includes an outer loop of more than 2 miles called the Manzano Hike, Bike and Run Trail, an inner half-mile called Leo’s Loop around a large quarry pond, and several connecting trails. Llano Parks • Badu Park is located on Town Lake on the Llano River near historic downtown. There are also 11 RV hookups available for shortterm rental. • Robinson City Park is located on FM 152 on the shoreline of the Llano River approximately two miles west of downtown Llano. Courtesy photo Inks Lake State Park Inks Lake State Park Trail, 3630 Park Rd 4 West, is home to nearly eight miles of several loop trails – most of which features views of Inks Lake with a hilly landscape through the park with live oaks, native flowers, cedar trees, yuccas and prickly pear cacti. The ground is rocky, mainly consisting of gneiss (pronounced “nice”) rock. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, and fishing and is accessible year-round. s a 17-year-old high school senior, Erika Schuster, owner of Sooo Yummy Bakery on the Square in Burnet, found herself uprooted from her home in New Orleans along with her entire church congregation. A three-day retreat to flee from the predicted devastation of hurricane Katrina turned into a forty-day journey reminiscent of Israel’s trek through the wilderness following God’s rescue from Egypt. Erika admits that it was difficult for her to move from town to town, never finding the time to make friends. So, when the church, Smoking for Jesus, found a home, it was in the Texas Hill Country.

When her sister’s 40th birthday came, Erika baked the cake again but with very different results. “It was amazing the difference between the two cakes.” Upon being gifted with a cookbook, she made every recipe but discovered her true passion was cake decorating and began pursuing it through every avenue available. Buying a Home What are some of the worst mistakes people make when looking for a home? The first thing that I recommend is to get your pre-approval for a loan to clarify what you can afford to buy. It is also wise to consider the closing costs and what the property taxes might look like as you determine the price range you might be considering. The goal is to be well versed on the financial side to eliminate surprises. Once you have found a property, what are some important questions to ask? Look at the history of the home and ask for any disclosures. For example, what kind of updates have been done? It is also prudent to drive the neighborhood at different times and check out nearby amenities. Are listing prices negotiable? Most things are negotiable but be sure your agent has completed the proper due diligence with the
comparable housing prices as well as the market assessment of the property to determine what the property is worth in today’s market. If I have my home on the market, should I wait for it to sell before going under contract with another property? Many are not aware that for you to make an offer contingent upon the sale of your home, your property has to be legally on the market. You need to consider your situation financially as well. Do I need to sell my home before I can buy another property? How quickly will my home sell? There are a lot of variables to deliberate in this situation. There are a lot of new subdivisions in places like Bertram in Burnet County, but everything depends on your comfort level with the neighborhood. Do I need to get a home inspection and a final walk-through before the contract closes? You should always have a home inspection and a final walk-through. Buying a home is emotional, and you may miss a glaring problem that a home inspection will uncover. Can I change my mind? Yes, but be prepared to potentially lose some money, including any Option fee, costs of any third party inspections you may have ordered, cost of your appraisal your Lender may have ordered, and even your Earnest Money, if not following the Contract protocol. The contract is a legal document. That is why it is vital to go through the proper steps in buying a home and one of the reasons you should use a professional realtor. Selling a Home What are some of the worst mistakes people make when they decide to sell their home? The key to selling your home is in the presentation. I recommend that you de-clutter and de-personalize. This helps the potential buyer who often begins online to see the potential for making your home theirs. What should I look for in a Realtor? What is their experience, and what type of services will they offer, like proven market performance that includes how they price your home, what type of marketing they will provide, and where. Is it local or national? We have families coming into the Hill Country from across the United States and even Internationally. Do they offer staging services? Do they provide professional photos of your property? How important is staging my home? First impressions often determine if there will be a second look. An experienced realtor will make this service available.
How do you determine the asking price? This is based on accurate market research. You need to know the economic climate and understand the cycle of supply and demand. Pricing is based on comparably priced homes in your neighborhood, the economic trends, and often whether the momentum is on the side of the buyer or seller. We are currently in a seller’s market in this area. What is the assessed value of my home versus the market value, and what is the average time a home is on the market in our area? The assessed value is what the state uses to determine property taxes. Your market value is determined by other factors, including what homes are selling for in your neighborhood and the cycle of supply and demand. The number of homes available for sale influences the market value. Currently, the average number of days on the market for most homes in the area is about 100 days. Why do I need a professional Real Estate Agent if I am buying or selling a home? There are seven key reasons for using a Real Estate Agent. First, they know what’s required in your market regarding legal and financial documents, forms, and disclosures. A Realtor acts as an expert to help avoid delays and costly mistakes. Second, agents are your best source for objective information regarding amenities, utilities, zoning, and more. Third, you want access to a full range of opportunities. A Realtor can give you that expanded search power by helping you evaluate listings that meet your criteria and save time by eliminating those properties that don’t meet your requirements. A professional Realtor is skilled in all factors of the negotiations and is your representative in your corner from price to repairs and possession date. Agents are up to date on regulation changes. They also function as your concerned but objective third party when emotions threaten the transaction, helping you stay focused on the outcome. Finally, they provide fair and ethical treatment. any People are by nature collectors and some innately know what they love to collect. Rick Scrimshire, owner of Indian River located on main steet in Marble Falls, is a collector and someone who has an eye for the unique and quirky. The shop is a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and distinctive items, many of which you could never find anywhere else. For example, the shop entrance boasts two 1880s gold mining buckets from Lake City, Colorado, now used as planters, that are a testament to Rick’s creative mind when it comes to finding and then utilizing the unusual in imaginative ways. For this reason, it is virtually impossible to fully appreciate his shop after only one visit. With over 50 artists, most from the Hill Country area, you have a better than average chance of finding something that you “just can’t live without”. Oils, watercolors and acrylics adorn the walls, colorful Indian patterned rugs drape the tables and
all types of pottery sit on shelves and tables along with many inventive metal and wood designed pieces of art. Unique to Indian River is Nica Pottery, colorful pots made by the villagers in San Juan de Oriente in Nicaragua who are descendants of the Nauhatl and Mayan Indians. These original, individually carved pieces are hand shaped and stained with natural minerals from the local mountains. Indian River also stocks locally made and nationally known Orleans Candles, inspired by the city of New Orleans. These candles are hand poured and available in inspired fragrances like Bayou Bonfire, Jazz, or Beignet along with many others as well as your favorite traditional scents including Lavender and Lemon Verbena. If you don’t want a fragrance in your candle, Indian River stocks a line of smokeless beeswax candles. The shop also has a broad selection of handmade knives. In addition to art and home décor Indian River also carries clothing as distinctively different as the art and collectables in is store. Laurae Valentine is the force behind the collection of soft flowing dresses in an array of distinctive styles and fabrics and in the newest embroidered tops, dusters and jeans that are as much art as fashion. The shop has a wide selection of handmade jewelry that will compliment any outfit and most is hand crafted locally with a variety of gemstones. The shop has an interesting backstory of the items and some of them have memories attached to them from Rick’s family. Rick’s father worked with metal and wood and some of his pieces are in the shop; his mother painted with oils. His grandmother hand painted china and oil painted for many years. Rick’s Daughter, Anna, also paints with acrylics. Rick is a geologist who worked most of his career in the oil and gas industry and retired before
purchasing the store in Marble Falls. His profession, however, afforded him the opportunity to travel throughout many counties as well as most of the United States. “I have been in many art galleries from Billings, Montana to Houston, Texas”. This love and appreciation for art in its many forms is the link between who he is now versus the man who has traveled to Europe, Israel, Africa, Central America, New Zealand, Australia, and all points in between as a working geologist and for pleasure. It has given him an appreciation for many different mediums, and you will find items in the shop with a variety of prices that can fit any budget. When you think that you have exhausted the repertoire at Indian River there is always one more thing. Some may remember Martha Poole. Her piano is still in the store and events are periodically scheduled. With rocks and minerals, soaps, clothing, unique artwork, knives, rugs, candles, and lots in between, Indian River is also a journey and one well worth taking. ithin Llano, on Texas 16 just two blocks shy of the Llano River, is a taste of Italy for those who desire the cuisine of Bel Paese.
Open since January 28, 2019, Gio’s Italian Restaurant offers standard Italian fare, along with sandwiches, pizzas, and breadsticks. Ismael Frias, who has been cooking in restaurants for 20 years, moved to Copperas Cove in 2004 and initially worked for his brother. His brother Adrian Frias, along with Maura Pasavento, owned a Giovanni’s Italian Restaurant in Lampasas, and Copperas Cove. “I was looking for a small town and a quiet community and I looked all around and found this
place,” Frias said of Llano. “And I think God brought me here for some reason. Since I was 16 years old, my dream was to have my own restaurant. So, in June 2018 I started to look for a place to open my own restaurant. In July 2018, when I was driving from Fredericksburg to Copperas Cove, I found this wonderful town, Llano. It has a great location and with amazing people who are very friendly.” Frias called the restaurant Gio’s, in honor of the Giovanni’s restaurant where he spent 16 years cooking Italian food. Originally from Mexico, Fria said it took him two years to learn how to cook Italian cuisine. “It was not too difficult to learn it, but also not too easy,” he said. Among Gio’s menu items include classic Italian food: spaghetti, lasagna, cannelloni, cheese ravioli, tortellini Bolognese, and eggplant parmesan. They also serve seafood and chicken dishes, pizza made to order, soups, sandwiches, and hand-cut steaks. And, of course, they offer antipasti (appetizers) and freshly-made pasta. Gio’s also offers a full bar. “Our customers especially seem to like our shrimp scampi, spaghetti shrimp, and stuffed chicken Florentine,” Frias said. “Overall, people seem to like everything we cook. I like cooking and talking with customers, and I love working in a restaurant.” Frias added that the business so far has been going well. Springtime is the busiest time of the year. Gio’s Italian Restaurant is at 101 West Main Street in Llano. The eatery’s hours are Tuesday to Saturday, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., and closed on Mondays. Kingsland AquaBoom By far, the largest Independence Day celebration in the area is Kingsland AquaBoom. Fan favorite festivities include the live music and a fireworks show, which culminates with a grand finale display over the Llano River on July 4. For more than 50 years, the event has conjured a festival-type atmosphere with land & boat parades, fundraising golf tournament, street dance, vendors, patriotic concert and more over several days leading up to the main fireworks show.
“This not only provides a much needed economic influx to local businesses in our community, but also allows families enjoy an affordable, fun and safe opportunity to celebrate,” according to organizers. 2022 AquaBoom events include: • June 17 – 9th Annual Lil’ Aquaboom Baby Show at 6 p.m. at Packsaddle Elementary School, featuring boys and girls categories. • June 18 – Miss AquaBoom Scholarship Pageant with categories such as Teeny Tiny Miss and Young Miss to Tween Miss and Teen Miss. seen from atop Thanksgiving Mountain as well as on the grounds of Quail Point Lodge. The activities the POA plans include: • The land parade, led by a flag-bearing Marble Falls VFW Honor Guard, which typically happens at 9:30 a.m.; • The boat parade that will pass by the shoreline of Quail Point Lodge at 10:30 a.m.; • Children’s activities begin at 10 a.m. with a number of stations including facepainting and other festivities for the young ones; • A patriotic sit-down show featuring the singing of our National Anthem, the speeches and highlights of Horseshoe Bay’s history and growth, dance routines and live music scheduled for 11:30 a.m. in the large Lake Room inside the lodge; and • An outside area will be set up to provide hot dogs, chips, watermelon, lemonade, ice-cold water and plenty of food and drink for the crowd to enjoy. In 2022, the event was a celebration of the United States of America’s 246th birthday and Horseshoe Bay’s 51th anniversary. Llano Llano Rock’N Riverfest, hosted by the Llano Volunteer Fire Department, highlights watersports fun on the Llano River with jet ski races touting prize purses as part of the national qualifying

Spicewood In Spicewood Krause Springs, 424 CR 404 in Burnet County is an iconic venue combining idyllic natural features with rustic amenities for one of the most Hill Country experiences. On July 4, guests are welcome to view a fireworks show launched inside the venue as long as they remain prior to the gate closing at 8 p.m. For those who are unable to be inside, area residents either line adjacent county roads or participate in a newly-launched tradition of staging at the parking lot of nearby Spicewood Elementary, 1005 Spur 191. Bertram The Bertram Volunteer Fire Department sponsors fireworks at the park, 549 E. FM 243 in the city, located in Burnet County.
