Beat the Heat with Summer Foods that Cool! By Garreta Kipp, MAOM, LAc Pathpoints to Wellness Healing Arts & Retreat • www.pathpointstowellness.com Watermelon, Mint Tea, and Mung Beans all have something in common – they are foods that can cool and refresh the body during the hot summer months. Raw salads, cucumber and fresh summer fruits are more summer foods that cool and provide good nutrition. It may seem odd, but warming foods and beverages can also be of benefit during summer by helping to bring excess “yang,” or heat, to the surface of the body for release through perspiration - thereby cooling the body. So, besides being delicious, spicy barbeque sauces and the like serve a useful purpose in the summer diet! In the Northern hemisphere, summer is the hottest season of the year. This season is associated with the Fire element and the energies of the Heart network in the paradigm of Oriental Medicine, and it is considered especially important to not overtax the heart with excess heat - something that can be a real challenge when enjoying outdoor summer activities! To keep the system cool and comfortable, try to drink cool or tepid water throughout the day. Avoid soda drinks, which are loaded chemicals and sugar, and which can make one feel increasingly thirsty. LIBRARY CLOSINGS: September 1 ñ Labor Day SPECIAL EVENTS: SUMMER READING CLUBS FOR CHILDREN, TEENS, & ADULTS, June 2-August 30 Fort Bend County Libraries presents special reading clubs during the summer to encourage reading among children, teens, and adults. There is no charge to join the Summer Reading Clubs, and they are open to everyone, regardless of the county of residence. Participants may register at any Fort Bend County library, or online by going to the FBCL website (http://www.fortbend.lib.tx.us) and clicking on the “SRC Sign-Up” images. The Adult Summer Reading Club is sponsored by Fort Bend County Libraries and the Friends organizations that support the county library system. The Children’s and Teens’ Summer Reading Clubs are also sponsored by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a consortium of states working together to provide high-quality children’s summer-reading program materials for public libraries. · Summer Reading Club For Children: “Fizz! Boom! Read!” Children from infancy through elementary school-age are invited to come to the library to read a lot of great books, see some exciting programs, and join in some fun activities ! Library programs and activities continue through August 2. Children are encouraged to read as many books as they can and they will earn rewards based on the total number they read or have read to them, or on the total number of hours they spend reading. Young patrons are also invited to register to win plush book-characters that will be given away in weekly drawings. In addition, the names of participants will be entered into a drawing for gift cards from area stores -- donated by the library Friends organizations -- that will be awarded to several lucky readers of 20 books or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. · Summer Reading Club For Teens/Young Adults: “Spark a Reaction” Exciting free activities are planned, teens in grades 6 & up discover the wonders of the world that can be found between the pages of a book! Library programs & activities continue through August 2. Teens are encouraged to read as many books as they can & they will earn rewards based on the number of hours they spend reading or the number of reading-related activities they complete. The reading activities may include watching a movie based on a book or attending a teen library program. Listening to audio books & reading magazines & newspapers may also be counted. For the first ten activities completed, each teen will receive a mystery prize. The rewards continue with a reading trophy for the first 20 books read. The last day to pick up awards is August 30. The names of participants will be entered into a drawing for a $25-gift card that will be awarded to several lucky readers completing 20 activities or more, in a drawing scheduled in August at each library location. ·Summer Reading Club For Adults: “Novel Discoveries @ Your Library” Adults of all ages, including young adults in high school, may participate by reading or listening to books. Weekly drawings for an FBCL tote bag, and a choice between vouchers for a $5 credit for fines or a $5 credit towards a purchase at the Friends of the Library Book Store, will take place throughout the summer for readers who log in and record their reading activity each week. Participants who complete the program -- by reading four books or by listening to audiobooks for 10 hours of time -- will receive an FBCL drink cozy. Prizes must be collected from the “home” library that the reader indicated on the registration form. BOOK CLUBS Fulshear Book Club – Monday, August 18, 12:00 noon, Meeting Room. The book to be discussed is Beautiful Ruins, written by Jess Walter Fulshear Night Readers Guild – Monday, August 25, 6:30 pm, Meeting Room. The book to be discussed is The Bookseller, by Mark Pryor. WEEKLY CHILDREN’S PROGRAMSWEEKLY CHILDREN’S PROGRAMS – Fall Schedule Toddler Time – Tuesdays at 10:15 am ñ offers caregiver/child activities, stories and songs for older babies, from 12 to 36 months of age. Toddler Time will take place on August 19 and 26 ONLY this month. Story Time – Wednesdays at 10:15 am ñ presents stories, movies, and age-appropriate craft activities for children 3 to 6 years of age. Story Time will take place on August 20 and 27 ONLY this month. After-School Break – 4th Tuesday of the month at 4:30 pm ñ crafts, movies, stories for school-aged children in grades 1 through 5. The After-School Breaks will not take place in August. The schedule will resume in September.
