’ve been in the recording studio with Grammy-nominated legend Ruthie Foster and award-winning singer and producer Daniel Barrett. We have joined forces to create an album together.

I’m flattered beyond belief that these two superstars want me on an album. After all, I’m relatively new to being a musician. And I’ve been a long time fan of both of them. To be in the studio with them is mindboggling.

But what’s really interesting is how we’re all stretching ourselves.

For example:

On this album, he does.

Each of us is stretching out of our comfort zones.

Why? How? When you stretch your comfort zone, you reach a new level of comfort and confidence.

When Daniel, Ruthie, and I go into the studio, we talk, share, joke, and play.

Out of our openness, we come up with songs. Out of our willingness to take risks, and exceed our comfort zones by pursuing our desires, we create new possibilities.

The result is magic.

And some pretty cool music.

This is an important lesson for each of us.

You have comfort zone limits, too.

When you find them and nudge them a bit, you extend your power and attract new results.

We aren’t doing daredevil stuff in the studio.

We’re taking what we haven’t done before but want to do, and focusing on making something happen by doing it.

We’re simply following our inspiration, and taking action to create something new.

Yes, there is often fear involved, but we feel the fear and do it, anyway.

We turn the fear into fuel.

Here’s an example – One day, while Ruthie was playing lead electric guitar (and truly wowing me at it), I received an idea for a song.

I jotted it down.

As she kept playing, I started singing the song in my head.

The lyrics and her melody seemed to work together.

When she was done playing, I did something daring.

I said, “I want to sing!”

This was a huge move on my part.

Singing at all, any time, any place, has been a challenge for me.

I’m new att it.

I’ve been iinsecure nsecure about it.

And to sin sing ng fo for Ruthie Foster – one of of the e bes best st ssingers in nge erss I’ve ever heard d in n my entire life – was a cou courageous, urag geou us, ev even ven ve outrageous, th thing hing g to to suggest.

o pain, no gain. It’s the marketing mantra of hard-core fitness ordeals designed to make you pass out, get hurt, or fail, so somebody can scream at you and make you feel like a big ol’ wuss. Good for your inner masochist or wannabe SEAL, maybe, but anyone who’s ever seriously followed an intense, disciplined physical training regimen knows no pain can also mean no injury – and they know something else.

Stay loose.

Want to be good at anything you do? Be able to stretch. The key to keeping body, mind, and spirit humming along harmoniously is flexibility – without it, strength, determination, and hard work can turn into liabilities.

Push boundaries, they push back. Stretch them, they expand and give you room to grow. Determination and resistance may build strong muscles, but flexibility makes them useful, and keeps you a lot healthier and happier. True, even stretching can be painful, but there’s good hurt and uhoh I’ve hurt myself hurt – and you know the difference.

Stretching the truth.

Back in its earlier glory days as an actual print newspaper, when you could see its headlines jumping out from the news rack, the Onion ran a doozy – one of its finer moments. The front-page header screamed WEBSITE CONTAINS INCORRECT INFORMATION! Internet Apologizes to Users! (Almost as good as Girls Gone Wild Released Back Into Civilization, about a program that taught them not to peel off their T-shirts and shower with girlfriends, in hopes of placing them in jobs as Hooter’s waitresses or tanning salon receptionists.)

It’s easier to believe wild girls can be tamed than to believe everything you see online – or in print – is completely true. Many years ago, the truly outrageous (and outrageously brilliant) author and social gadfly Norman Mailer spoke at UT Austin, and told the audience to read about the talk in the papers the next day.

They would, he said, get it completely wrong.

He was completely right.

That made an impression, one reason why Austin All Natural has pretty strict editorial guidelines for contributors, requesting articles that are interesting, informative, and enjoyable to read. Unsubstantiated health claims, client testimonials, and advertorials that simply extol the virtues of a specific product get edited.

The question has been asked on occasion (on few enough occasions, actually, to count on one hand and still have one finger left to, umm… extend while drinking tea), if we research or try all these things out, to see if they work.

Nope. Natural healthcare and spiritual practices are pretty much subjective experiences, and everyone who uses them will have completely different results, based on what they bring to the table. Professional debunkers make a living off that – and have their own agenda.

If you’re sick, as the requisite disclaimer says, go to the practitioner of your choice. In the meantime, educate yourself, use common sense, and follow your intuition about natural healthcare and metaphysical practices – and never, ever turn your back on a Girl Gone Wild.

by Beth Carpenter So many people suffer from depression – mostly a mild form, but for those like Robin Williams, severe depression.

Publicly, he seemed to smile more than frown. He had the ability to make me laugh so hard, I’d be in tears.

Robin Williams was such a public figure that we naturally relaxed when watching anything by him, because we knew we were seeing a real person that gave wholeheartedly, and would somehow delightfully surprise us during his performance.

My father, though not officially diagnosed with bipolar depression, was more than likely suffering from the imbalance – and he also suffered from huge mood swings. He, too, was a very social being, happiest when surrounded with lots of friends and family.

My father’s birthday was August 15, and this is a tribute to him – and to Robin Williams.

One of a kind.

I’ve written a lot about anxiety and depression throughout the years, because what’s going on at deep inner levels affects the physical body. Disease shows up in the energy field before it shows up in the physical body, so an important factor in mental and physical health is to keep your auric field and chakras clean.

Clinical depression can result from years of abuse with drugs and alcohol, which was the case with both Robin Williams and my father – and it doesn’t matter whether the drugs are street drugs, or prescribed to you by a doctor.

by Christina Allen In her book The Highly Sensitive Person, Elaine Aron notes that twenty percent of the human population is born with a level of sensitivity that is markedly different than the average person’s. They are the gifted intuitives and empaths among us.

One in five of us has these gifts. In the days of old, we were the treasured healers, oracles, mediums, channels, and shamans of the community.

Unfortunately, in a period of dark human history that we are just now awakening from, we were shamed into hiding and denying our true nature for fear of losing our lives. Suffering through rigid educational systems and roles that overload our delicate nervous systems, our current survival options eventually break us down.

We are then dismissed as weak and, well – Sensitive, continuing the cycle of shame.

Being a Sensitive is genetic.

It doesn’t disappear just because we’ve been shamed into not having it.

Because these gifts were demonized, the art of cultivating them went underground as well.

Without proper training, many confuse their personal desires (and resulting projections) with the information they download from the divine. While they do hear the voice of Spirit clearly at times, the uninitiated often confuse it with the voices of their ego, making it difficult to know what is truth and what is made up.

Others complain they pick up too much information from their

environment, and don’t know how to turn it off, or down. Untutored in the pitfalls of their art, many Sensitives end up mistrusting themselves, thinking they’re sick or even crazy instead of gifted. When they look for help they’re medicated, instead of shepherded into proper training.

As a result, many develop chronic diseases and turn to various forms of addictive self-medication, instead of prospering and blossoming in their fields of service.

Tracking through time.

Indigenous cultures have highly revered the Sensitives within their tribes, and consider them indispensable.

They are those directed by Angels and Spirit Guides, who can track backwards and forwards through time to where the buffalo or caribou have been, and will be. They speak to those who have passed on, and bring healing and closure to their tribes when someone dies. They know how to listen to the plants, and learn which hold medicines for wounds and illnesses.

Their great sensitivity allows them to engage deeply with the world at its energetic origins, bringing balance, abundance, and health back into their villages.

Currently, there are still at least twenty percent of us born with these gifts, and more and more of us are waking up to own them all of the time.

Studies show the Indigo, Rainbow and Crystal children are coming through with new genetics, still.

Might be tempting to call it a miracle, huh?

Moringa Oleifera sounds like the name of a sultry flamenco dancer. (“He looked onto the eyes of the lovely Moringa, and now he spends all his nights drinking pulque while her heels beat a staccato rhythm on the cantina floor.�)

It is, however, actually a tree native to the Himalayan foothills of northwest India. First introduced to westerners in a 2006 Discovery Channel documentary, it’s part of Indian folklore and traditional medicine, and is cultivated in tropical areas all over the world, from Asia to Haiti to Hawaii.

It’s sometimes called the Drumstick Tree, because the edible seedpods look a little like drumsticks. The mature seeds and their oil are also edible, and seedcakes left after the oil is pressed can be used as fertilizer, or to filter and purify water – pretty much a model of environmental goodness.

It’s the tree’s abundant leaves that pack the nutritional punch, though. A hundred grams of them in fresh form have the same amount of iron as a steak, as much Vitamin C as an orange (170% of the adult requirement, according to one source), more potassium than a banana, and as much protein as an egg. It’s also a complete protein, providing all essential amino acids – one of the few plant sources that do so.

Moringa is a staple of diets in Asian cultures, where the leaves are cooked like spinach, the seeds are cooked like peas or roasted like nuts, and the seedpods and dried leaves are used in soups and curries. It’s primarily used as a natural supplement in the U.S., since its high vitamin, mineral, and protein content give it the potential to be anti-inflammatory and beneficial to the digestive and circulatory systems, and support anti-aging and energy production.

by Michael Abedin Ever hear a kid (or maybe an adult who recently visited one of the new candy stores opening in Denver) wonder why the sky is blue? Seems like it might be a complex algorithm – refracted sunlight bounces off the spectrum of blah, blah, blah – but it’s actually a simple one-word answer.

Ozone.

O2, with two oxygen atoms, is the colorless oxygen you breathe here at ground level. Way up in the stratosphere, though, electrical discharges have created oxygen with three atoms – O3, ozone – and, yes, it’s blue. That extra atom also supercharges it, and the good news is that it’s relatively easy to generate O3 for therapeutic purposes.

Medical ozone has been widely used in Europe for over half a century, and is finally catching on here in the colonies.

All work on the body has components of energy work, as the client’s energy field entrains with the therapist’s. In ages past, healing methods were passed down through families and tribes as a healing practice that kept the frequencies sustained, kept you from running down, and kept the mysterious spark of life high.

The Reiki Apprentice The journey of Tenzin Lam Sherpa

Reiki, one of the most well-known forms of energy healing, was founded – or rediscovered – by Mikao Usui in Japan, around the beginning of the last century. It’s usually taught in three levels, over a period of time or in intensives.

Usui, a Tendai Buddhist, received the keys to Reiki in a twenty-one day meditation on a holy mountain outside Kyoto, eventually opening a clinic where people often stayed to work as a form of payment, receiving Reiki treatments over time until they absorbed enough Reiki energy that they began doing treatments themselves. A handful of them were formally attuned as Reiki Masters, the only level Usui used.

This type of initiation by apprenticeship isn’t seen much anymore – unless you happen to be a monk.

Tenzin Lama Sherpa is a Tibetan Buddhist monk who teaches the Usui system of Reiki, along with Buddhist meditation and philosophy. When he was thirteen, he began studying in a monastery in the south of India, where he discovered a natural desire to do healing work.

Part of the monastic life was receiving philosophical teachings, transmissions, and initiations from lamas, and taking care of other monks that were sick – which inspired him to become a doctor. Turns out, though, you can’t be a monk and a doctor at the same time.

The universe, though, has its ways.

Tenzin became ill, started Reiki classes with a lama, recovered quickly, and continued training until he began giving sessions himself – twenty-one days later. He offered his services in a Reiki center in Nepal, and in households, hospitals, and social service centers. (One of his favorite sessions was for a doctor.)

When Tenzin’s teacher received an invitation to come to Chile, he became his assistant, travelling to centers, universities, and clinics in South America, working with other Reiki Masters and expanding his knowledge.

Tenzin’s philosophy of Reiki is simple – it’s a scientific healing method with no side effects that any person can learn, for self-healing, healing others, and promoting physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual growth. “Nowadays,� he says, “we can learn different types of Reiki healing methods, but love and compassion form the foundation to any form of Reiki you desire to learn.�

VAPE IT?

by Skip Looper, Cultural Affairs Editor Want a surefire way to generate a controversy? Tell folks what they can’t put in their mouths. Smokers got righteously huffy (and puffy) when no-smoking laws spread, grumbling about civil liberties and such. (btw: Best way to test cigarette smokers’ commitment to civil liberties? Sit down next to them and light up a big ol’ cigar.)

When non-smokers’ right not to breathe nasty exhaust fumes from smokers’ lungs prevailed, some enterprising soul had an idea. (btw 2: Best T-shirt ever? “I Don’t Mind Breathing Your Secondhand Smoke If You Don’t Mind Me Drinking Beer and Peeing on You.”) The idea? Take that crockpot-sized vaporizer your mom stuck a glob of Vicks in when you were sick, turn it into a handheld, battery-operated tube, put nicotine in there to get vaporized, and voila – the e-cig.

Perfect solution, huh?

Smokers get their fix, get to pretend they’re quitting, and get to puff in public since, technically, there’s no secondhand smoke – you’re just blowing off steam. Early models looked like cigarettes, but evolved into a stubbier version of Dr. Gonzo’s trademark cigarette holder, sans cigarette. Voila – the vape.

A brouhaha erupted, as brouhahas do. Commercials showed hot babes and tough dudes celebrating their freedom to be addicted in public again, and so many vape shops opened up you can’t hardly drive past a strip mall and flip a butt out the window without hitting one. Legitimate concerns arose about whether e-cigs are safe, or just safer than inhaling tars from burning tobacco.

In the meantime, other enterprising souls realized if you can vape nicotine, you can vape, say, hemp oil, thereby theoretically (that’s theoretically, before anyone dives for a keyboard) getting the acknowledged health benefits of nonpsychoactive cannabinidiol (CBD) found in THC-free hemp.

Like cigar smokers and future presidents, you don’t inhale. Vaporized hemp oil mixes with saliva, and sublingual absorption (theoretically) takes hempy goodness into the bloodstream, bypassing the digestive system and blood/brain barrier. Short of a suppository, it’s probably the quickest way to get a nutrient or medication into your system.

More controversy? Maybe not. The buzz is mostly around pot, hemp’s wacky first cousin. Best authority on either of them is probably an elder statesman, experienced in such matters.

“It won’t kill you,” Willie Nelson says, “unless you drop a bale of it on you or something.”
