Welcome To Eagle Lake, Texas Greetings, On behalf of the Chamber of Commerce, Mayor and City Council, Welcome to Eagle Lake!

We have been known for decades as the “Goose Hunting Capital of the World,â€? but there is much more than hunting that our community has to offer. If you have never been to Eagle /DNH RU LI LW¡V EHHQ D ZKLOH VLQFH \RX have, explore the pages of this guide to sample only a few of the reasons to visit or make us your hometown.

Eagle Lake is located in southeast Colorado County, on US Highway 90A, some 60 miles West of Houston, 140 miles East of San Antonio, and 100 miles Southeast of Austin.

Highways serving the community are US Hwy 90A, Texas FM 102, FM 3013, FM 1093 and 12 miles to the North is Interstate 10.

One of our greatest assets is the people of Eagle Lake and the surrounding areas. However, we recognize that it is business that provides

the fuel that runs our economy, provides jobs to our residents and it is business that makes the investments of money and other resources that keep our community strong. This guide will furnish you with valuable information about the community, our rich history and the wealth of opportunities that await you in Eagle Lake and its surrounding areas.

The Eagle Lake area has long been an agricultural community. Rice is the major crop; however, cotton, grains, and cattle production are also important to our economy. Sand and gravel mines around Eagle Lake supply the materials for construction to a large part of southeast Texas. Today, Eagle Lake and surrounding areas are diversifying their economy with a strong emphasis on bringing new industry into the area, as well as helping existing business prosper and grow.

for many migratory birds. In addition to the ducks and geese that winter here, there are many other species RI IRZO WKDW ÀQG DQ DWWUDFWLYH KDELWDW in the Eagle Lake area. The city has developed a nature area that includes an observation platform overlooking the lake. This provides the public with a view of the lake and the many birds, alligators, and other wildlife that make this beautiful lake their home.

Located on Main Street in downtown Eagle Lake, The Prairie Edge Museum was created to preserve and record important information about the natural and cultural history of the Eagle Lake past and present for the education and enjoyment of all.

The museum was established in 1983 and incorporates exhibits that feature plant and animal life from the Ice Age to present time. Exhibits include artifacts that explore the prehistoric Native American cultures, trials and tribulations of pioneers, agriculturalists, homemakers, modern life styles, and effects of human intrusions into the prairie edge environment. There is also documentation of the role of local citizens in politics, education, journalism, agriculture, athletics, conservation, the military and more.

The Prairie Edge Museum Thrift Shop is open the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month from 9AM to 1PM. The Thrift Shop located at the Museum provides the community an outlet for recycling their clothing and household goods while also giving them an opportunity to purchase gently used items at a reasonable price. Staffed totally by volunteers, the Thrift Shop is the major fundraiser for the museum, allowing us to open the Museum 7 days a week at no charge to the public.

Eagle Lake was served by 3 railroads at the peak of the era, and artifacts from these lines and many other Texas railroads, are on exhibit. The building was the former Santa Fe depot built in 1911 and used by that railroad until the agency transferred to Lakeside in 1970.

area attractions Public River Access to Colorado River The closest public boat ramp and canoe/kayak launch site to the Colorado River from Eagle Lake is only 6 miles away on the Eagle Lake side of the Colorado River Bridge on HWY 90A. It is known as the Altair Boat Ramp and is one of the few public river access sites. In addition to the launch ramp, facilities include paved parking and a picnic site within the highway right of way. This boat ramp is for day use only.

He used convict labor from a nearby prison farm to construct levees and harvest the new crop. The second venture proved so successful that over 30,000 acres of rice were cultivated in the Colorado River Valley in 1900 and over 56,000 acres in 1901, mostly in Colorado County.

They Ă&#x20AC;VKHG LQ WKH ODNH DWH WKH DOOLJDWRUV and used the grease from them to ZDUG DZD\ WKH PRVTXLWRHV /HJHQGV have grown around the presence of the Indians, and the earliest known version of â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Legend of the Lakeâ&#x20AC;? was printed in the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Morning Starâ&#x20AC;?, published in Houston June 13, 1839.

Later, it was reprinted by the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Richmond Telescopeâ&#x20AC;?. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Legend of the Lakeâ&#x20AC;? is a romantic tale of two ill-fated lovers beside the waters of the lake.

Eagle Lake is marked on early Texas maps. The name was probably given in 1821 by William W. Little and -DPHV %HDUG WZR RI $XVWLQ¡V VFRXWV when one of them killed an eagle on the lake and called the water â&#x20AC;&#x153;LaguQD GHO $TXLODÂľ On March 22, 1838, Patrick Reels was granted 2,391 acres on the shores of the lake, adjoining land grants owned by A. L. McLain and James McNair.

In 1848 this grant was patented to the heirs of P. Reels by the state. *DPDOLHO *RRG DORQJ ZLWK ' : &

Good subVHTXHQWO\ GHHGHG KDOI LQWHUHVW LQ DFUHV WR 'H:LWW &OLQWRQ Harris a director of the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway. Together they planned the town to be a station on a new railroad between Harrisburg and Austin.

The rails reached Eagle Lake in 1859. Later the SouthHUQ 3DFLĂ&#x20AC;F WKH &DQH %HOW WKH 6DQ $QWRQLR DQG $UDQVDV 3DVV and the Santa Fe Railroads all made Eagle Lake accessible for shipment of crops and, later, of gravel.
