ave you ever welcomed a guest by saying “welcome to our home?” It’s very pleasant when we are in control of what and who enters our home. What about when there is an intrusion into our home? This actually happens all the time and we may not even consider it. An intrusion can be unwelcomed people, movies, commercials, music or even pop-ups on our computer screen.

Most of these may even have an influence on our children. They are being impressed by the latest pop star, eye-catching media, or the lives of people through the lens of social media. However, the biggest impression on our children will be when they see us denouncing what is not good, and taking action to avoid it.

Recently I heard my sweet little girl singing a very catchy tune; she blissfully bobbed to the beat of an outrageously evil song about teenagers fantasizing about killing their enemies.

I asked her why she was singing that song and she replied “because it’s got a catchy tune and I like it.”

I continued to ask her what it was about and she said,”I’m not sure, but I like it”. Well, I had to explain to

her what the song was about and why she should not listen to it; and that sometimes very bad things can appear nice.

Scary to think of such innocence being intruded upon by pop-culture. Every day the attacks on our children’s innocence should force us to pray without ceasing for their protection.

We can’t always be with them to capture those teaching moments.

However, when the opportunity presents itself we need to act right away with authority, reasoning, fairness, and love. An authoritative parent will explain the reasons behind a demand, they will encourage a give and take, set standards and actually enforce them.

Our children are adults-in-themaking. What kind of character do we want them to possess as grown men and women? Will they be generous and responsible adults? Will they make loving husbands and wives, and capable mothers and fathers? Our approach to parenting will very likely affect these outcomes!

As parents we have to stay strong. Our children deserve it! SP

Ever wonder how the teddy bear got its name? Well, he was named after President Theodore (aka Teddy) Roosevelt. An avid hunter; on one hunting trip in November 1902, President Theodore refused to shoot a bear that trackers had caught and tied to a tree, saying it was unsportsmanlike. The news spread and it became the topic of a political cartoon in the Washington Post. The drawing inspired a Toy Store owner!

In February 1903, this toy store owner put a stuffed bear his wife had made in the toy shop’s window and labeled it “Teddy’s Bear” (after asking permission from the president to use his name first). The toys were a hit and still are to this day.

Runners who average more than 20 miles a week (typically middle and high school age) may need to eat more to maintain their growth and development. Tips: No milk products within three to four hours of running, no carbonated or caffeinated drinks before a run or workout, all sports drinks should be diluted by at least half (with water) and eat meals at least two hours before running. Hydration is also very important. We have to be cautious of heat illness and dehy­dration as [kids’] surface-area-to-volume ratio is less than adults, and they are not as good at regulating their own temperature.

At 2.5, it would be recommended to keep “playing” with sounds, increase sentence length, vocabulary and basic concept usage. Until age 3, most children make articulation errors. Seek a professional opinion if these errors persist after age 3 or when the child is showing signs of frustration when trying to communicate.

MY SON HAS BEEN COMPLAINING ABOUT HEADACHES RECENTLY. I HEARD FOOD SENSITIVITIES COULD PLAY A PART. HOW WOULD I KNOW?

Headaches can have a variety of triggers. Some of the more common triggers include dehydration, nutrient deficiencies, hypoglycemia, stress and food sensitivities. If the headaches began recently, the first question I would ask is “What has changed?” School finals (stress), seasonal changes (allergies), warmer temperatures (dehydration), and dietary changes caused by switching from cafeteria to home prepared lunches would be some of the changes I would explore. A basic place to start would be to keep a food and lifestyle journal for a few weeks. Include activities, foods and beverages consumed and headaches in chronological order to make it easier to establish a pattern. If the food and lifestyle journal doesn’t provide answers, food sensitivity testing (blood work) can identify elusive triggers. Certified LEAP Therapists (CLT) are registered dietitians/nutritionists that have received specialized training in food sensitivities. Summertime!

Time for swimming, picnics, family vacations, and...

C

heckups are a very important part of your child’s healthy development. This is the time to review growth and development and look for potential problems early, before they have a chance to become more serious. Because infancy is a time of rapid growth and development, babies need to come for frequent checkups – 3 to 5 days, 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, 9 months and 12 months. Make sure you like your pediatrician before your baby comes because you will be making lots of visits to the office! For the second year of life, the frequency of checkups decreases – 15 months, 18 months and 2 years. There may be a checkup at 30 months if there are questions about growth and development, but usually after 2 years we start annual checkups. Your child should be seen once a year throughout the school years. Many parents choose to schedule these visits during the summer so no school is missed, so call your pediatrician early because back-to-school checkup slots can fill up quickly.

Checkups are also the time to address the concerns that may have arisen since your last visit. For the babies, your pediatrician will not only track growth and screen for developmental milestones in a variety of areas (e.g. social, language, gross motor and fine motor), but also provide guidance about expected development in the coming months and advise you on safety issues for various ages to keep your baby safe.

Your pediatrician has probably set aside extra time for the checkup visit, so this is the time to discuss your questions about feeding and nutrition, sleep patterns, social interactions and, for the older children, academic and attention problems at school.

Last, but definitely not least – checkups are the visit during which vaccines are given.

Questions about vaccines are some of the most

frequently asked questions pediatricians receive: Why do we need so many?

Does anybody really get these diseases anymore? Isn’t it dangerous to give so many vaccines to babies or to give so many vaccines at one time? Isn’t it better for the baby’s immune system if they fight off these diseases for themselves? Do vaccines cause autism? These questions are discussed by friends and family members and are also frequently seen on the internet. It is not surprising that new parents are frightened by these questions, but vaccine safety has been well studied and well documented.

The truth is – vaccines save lives. We have been successful in reducing the number cases of many of these diseases because we have been vaccinating. But, we need to remember that the reason we vaccinate for these particular diseases is because they are dangerous, and even deadly. Vaccines reduce the risk of infection by working with the body’s natural defenses. They actually strengthen your child’s immune system by causing him or her to develop antibodies which remain ready to fight off these diseases if he or she is exposed to them.

The claim that MMR vaccine has been linked to development of autism has been the subject of numerous extensive (and expensive) studies and there has been absolutely no correlation found. Also, the current vaccine schedules (including multiple vaccines for 2, 4 and 6 month infants) has not only been proven to be safe for the infants but also provides better immune response than alternative schedules. Additional vaccines are given at 12, 15 and 18 months and a set of boosters are given at 4 years. At 11 to

12 years, children are given the TdaP vaccine for Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis as well as a vaccine that protects against a very aggressive and deadly disease, meningococcemia. Human Papilloma Virus vaccine is also recommended for children over 9 although it is currently not required for school. You should discuss the HPV vaccine with your pediatrician when your child is old enough to receive it.

It is easy for parents to question the need for continuing to vaccinate against all of these diseases because they have never seen them.

However, recent outbreaks in measles and Pertussis (whooping cough) remind us that the risks posed by these diseases remain. In 2013, 2,652 cases of whooping cough were reported in Texas. Almost 50 people (mainly infants) died from whooping cough between 2000 and 2013.

Pertussis is particularly dangerous for infants.

We begin their immunization at 2 months of age, but the only way to protect them before two months is to vaccinate everyone around them.

The TdaP vaccine is currently recommended for all pregnant women as well as any adults or adolescents who will come in contact with infants.

A whooping cough booster is also given to all school children at the 11 or 12 year checkup.

When preparing for your child’s checkup, make a list of any questions you might have. Use your pediatrician as a source of information, not just about vaccines but also about your child’s growth and development. A successful checkup is one in which parents and pediatrician work together to prepare your child for another healthy year. Your pediatrician is the expert on child health, but you are the expert on your child!

The Gift of Laughter

I

n mid-May, my nine-year-old daughter, Jessie, and I attended a show at our local theatre. At the end of the performance, the director came on stage to thank people for their support. She concluded, “I hope you all have a nice Christmas.” The audience erupted with laughter, at which point she realized her mistake and clarified, “I meant to say have a nice summer.”

No matter the season, I love to laugh. It’s one of my favorite things to do. When I am the target of the laughter without intending to be, I don’t take myself too seriously and laugh right along. This is good, as tired dads, like frazzled show directors, occasionally make humorous mistakes. For example, my wife, Mattie, recently wanted to give someone my email address and couldn’t remember it. When I told her the address, which began with my last name, I spelled “Hempfing” for her. Mattie gave me an odd look.

I said, “What?” Then it hit me that my wife knew how to spell my last name.

Jessie fills my life with laughter, even though she sometimes simultaneously frustrates and exhausts me. I love Jessie with all my heart, but she’s heard me say many times, “Girl, you wear me out.” I’ve learned that I must choose my battles wisely. So if something minor happens, I try to laugh it off instead of getting upset. Okay, maybe I stress out just a little. A recent example comes to mind.

My wife, Mattie, had an overnight trip, so it was just Daddy and daughter on Monday morning. Jessie’s third-grade class had a field trip to a farm that day. After breakfast, I told Jessie to go into our bathroom and apply sunscreen. After waiting three times as long as it should have taken, I checked on her.

She had dutifully applied the sunscreen, but then proceeded to drench her pigtailed hair with Mattie’s hairspray. As I stepped toward her for a closer look, she gave it an additional squirt. It was now past time to leave for school, and my daughter’s hair looked as wet as if she’d just gotten out of the shower – and I knew it would soon dry to the hardness of her bicycle helmet.

Jessie’s morning routine never includes hairspray. A few nights earlier, though, she had performed in a ballet recital and her teacher had used hairspray to secure the girls’ buns.

It would have been bad enough to send Jessie to school with only her teacher and classmates to notice her immovable (even if gale force winds were present) hair, but since it was a field trip day, lots of mothers would be going along. Deep down, I think we all care what other people think, even if we say we don’t. I tried not to make a big deal out of Jessie’s hair. Shaking my head, I left the room and advised myself, “The girl is just like her independent momma, so let it go.”

As I drove my fragrant, shiny-headed daughter to school, I brought up the topic of adequate hairspray usage. Apparently, I can give advice but can’t take it, even from myself.

Jessie responded, “It’s not too much hairspray, Dad. There’s high humidity today.” I laughed out loud at my daughter’s quick-thinking and felt relief that the hairspray caking her head hadn’t affected her brain. Although we missed the 8 a.m. bell by three minutes, I dropped Jessie off before the late bell, at which point we would have had to go to the office for a tardy slip. Before she exited the van, I reminded her to stay away from fire, as she was highly flammable.

In hindsight maybe the show director wasn’t wrong in wishing everyone a nice Christmas.

Jessie gives me gifts of laughter every day. As we head into summer, and have more time to spend together than during the school year, I’m going to take time to enjoy her daily gifts. Okay, maybe not all of them. Last night, Jessie surprised me with a picnic of open-faced mandarin orange sandwiches sprinkled with powdered sugar.

I sent my non-appetizing sandwich back to the kitchen, but Jessie ate hers. I asked, “How was it?” She answered, “Not bad, but the bread was soggy” (from the sugary juice that dripped from the canned oranges). What was I to do? I laughed.

Until next month, remember to cherish the moments. SP Patrick Hempfing had a 20-year professional career in banking, accounting, and auditing before he became a father at age 44. He is now a full-time husband, stay-at-home dad and writer.

Irving’s Parks and Recreation Department is offering its summer lunch program for the third consecutive year.

The program results from a partnership among the City of Irving Independent School District (ISD), Texas Department of Agriculture and U.S. Department of Agriculture. Lunch preparation and delivery will be administered by Irving ISD. The healthy meals will complement the city’s summer camp activities at city recreation centers. Lunches will be similar to those served at school during the academic year. The lunch menu will feature both hot and cold meals, and will include one meat, two vegetables/fruit, bread and milk. Heritage House Tour Features Antique Wedding Gowns 3-5pm. Back by popular demand, the monthly tour of the Irving Heritage House will feature a display of the bridal gowns of yesteryear. Gowns dating from the 1880s to a mid-century informal gown from the 1950s will be displayed. The 1903 gown, coat, and shoes ensemble of Agnes Sueppel Schulze, wife of Irving co-founder J. O. Common Camp Injuries and Illnesses

B

efore you send your child to camp or even choose a camp, consider carefully what happens if your child gets sick or hurt – it probably won’t happen but it’s best to know.

Remember, most camps involve exercise – often more than the child gets at home.

“Camps involve a lot of physical activity,” says Jeff Solomon, executive director of the National Camp Association. “Scrapes, bumps and bruises are not uncommon. Occasionally, it might be a strain, a sprain or a broken bone.

The good news is, the supervision at camps is very tight – typically one counselor to every three or four children.”

Remember your child will likely be outside more than at home.

“Typically what we see is pretty much the same stuff that happens in your backyard – from rough housing outside,” says Diane Tyrell, director of Camp Friendship in Virginia. “Kids will get cuts and scrapes, step on a rock, and suffer the occasional bee sting. That’s the common stuff.”

Some of the most common ailments your child is likely to suffer include bug bites — especially if he forgot to use bug spray, upset stomach – often from

nerves or homesickness, and occasionally sunburn – although most camp counselors are diligent about making campers use sunscreen, says Bob Briscoe, program director at Kaleidoscope Camp.

Ear infections are another likely ailment at camps where children spend a lot of time swimming, says Linda Ebner Erceg, a registered nurse and public health nurse who is executive director of the Association of Camp Nurses.

Parents should talk to camp directors about common illnesses and injuries seen at the camps they’re considering and find out each camp’s response plan and strategy for reducing risks, Erceg says.

“We’re dealing with humans, so stuff is going to happen. Skinned knees are appropriate to developing bodies,” she says. “If you’re hearing ‘head injuries, fractures,’ that should be a pink flag to ask, ‘what’s going on here and how does the camp minimize the potential for injuries?’”

“Most resident camps should have an R.N. or site daily, at a minimum,” Erceg says.

be best managed in a camp setting. Then decide if you’re comfortable with the camp’s policies.

For example, most camps would allow a child with asthma to keep a rescue inhaler on hand or with the counselor supervising each activity, she says. Meantime, a medication inhaler and other medications, even band-aids, likely will be kept at the camp health center so the child’s medicine intake is monitored.

“They want to minimize the potential that a child will get a scrape, just put a band-aid on it, then have it get infected afterward,” she says. “At the health center, an adult is keeping an eye on that.”

Also keep in mind that most camps are in more remote, rural locations and access to hospital emergency rooms or clinics might not be as fast as in your home urban setting, she says.

Find out how far the camp is from such care in the unlikely event it’s needed and determine if you’re comfortable with that, Erceg says.

That doesn’t mean that your fears should keep you from sending your child away – just be educated.

“Nature speaks to the soul of a child,” Erceg says. “The work of childhood is play and that’s what happens at camp. You just need to determine a balance with appropriate risk taking.’ SP

The Linguistics of Fashion

ts summertime, so just like last year I am embarrassing my children. Not intentionally, of course. But the other day, when my daughter had a gaggle of friends over, I walked into the family room and asked loudly: “Girls, have you seen my thongs?”

I was, of course, referring to footwear - but try to explain that to a group of 12-year-olds with their lower jaws hanging below their knees. I think I eventually convinced them that I wasn’t a cross-dresser, but I won’t be surprised if I get several funny looks at the next PTA meeting in the fall.

My daughter was mortified that I allowed this to happen. So once again, she gave me the 411 on thongs.

“Dad, thongs are, like, underwear,” she explained. “They don’t go on your feet. And please try not to speak to my friends anymore.”

She can say that all she wants, but she has no idea what I’m up against here. My kids act all grossed out when I mention the thong word, but come on. You can’t just take a common word from my impressionable years and then change it. It’s not fair.

How did this happen? Who is responsible for taking a perfectly innocent word that many generations used to describe functional footwear for the beach, and assign it to compromising underwear? What were they thinking?

Fashion Designer: Brilliant. That’s a well-known word. Everybody wears thongs. My grandma wears thongs.

Apprentice Number One: I think I’m going to be sick.

I am sure the fashion industry wipes their hands clean of this because in the place of thongs we were given a new name for our old footwear: flip-flops (which sound like something a horse does).

So, what’s next - is a designer going to produce a new kind of athletic supporter and call it a loafer? Maybe they’d like to rename my Fruit of the Looms - hats.

I think it is high time that we band together and petition to put a stop to renaming things on a whim. There should have been a vote of whether we wanted to rename thongs (not to mention a vote on who should and shouldn’t be allowed to wear the new thongs - but that’s a different column).

In the future, designers should have to come before the General Assembly and give their case for changing the names of perfectly good fashion items. Then, if passed, the rest of us could at least take comfort knowing that we had a small say in the renaming of our clothing.

For now, I guess I am going to continue practicing calling my thongs flip-flops. I’m also not going to fall for it anymore when I ask for thongs and the teenage shoe salesmen send me to the second floor - which turns out to be the women’s lingerie department. SP
