Stress and the
“SuperMom”
A
heartfelt “Thank you” to all of the mothers who are working so hard to create healthy and happy environments for their children! Although we don’t always say it, we know that all of the juggling of responsibilities that mothers do can be exhausting and stressful. A 2010 report by the American Psychological Association found that mothers reported significantly more physical and emotional symptoms of stress than men or other women who were not mothers. Moms reported that because of their stress they were more likely to have physical symptoms (headaches, stomach problems, sleep problems), and more likely to attempt to manage stress with unhelpful strategies such as overeating. Mothers should remember that the way that they manage their stress becomes a model to their children. For the sake of the whole family, mothers should: 1. Understand How You Experience Stress – Are your thoughts different? Do you feel more fatigued? Are you easily irritated? Do you eat more … or the wrong kinds of food?
2.
Identify Stressors – What situations bring stressful feeling? Finances? Health issues? Parenting decisions? Relationship conflict? Problems at work? Try to keep stressors from one area from spilling over to other areas. 3. Recognize How You Currently Deal with Stress – Do you typically withdraw from others? Do you try to be perfect? Do you try short-term fixes to make you feel better like alcohol or overeating? 4. Prioritize – Decide each morning which tasks are really important, and which will need to wait for another day. Mothers often automatically go from one task to the next, and then find at the end of the day that they’ve neglected something that was really important. Prioritizing sometimes means saying “No” to what others ask of you. 5. Get Help When You Need Help – Friends and family who know you are struggling are often happy to help by bringing over a meal or cutting the lawn. Assign age-appropriate chores to children (Having moderate responsibilities is healthy for children, too). Contact a psychologist, your physician, or another professional if you are getting overwhelmed. 6. Spend Some Time Everyday on Yourself – Take five quiet minutes to sip a cup of coffee. Take your kids for a walk to the park. Get some exercise everyday. You can only model healthy attitudes and behaviors if you are caring for yourself. Happy Mother’s Day! With whom will you compare me...? To whom will you liken me that we may be compared?
C
ulture is the cradle of religion. Every concept or idea about God is shaped by the categories that predominate in cultural ideology. Consequently, the categories that dominate the American understanding of God is one that is all powerful. The classic definition of God’s almightiness denotes that God is sovereign over all other powers and that no power can frustrate God. The present reality is that the Christian community, the Church, is obsessed with the idea of ‘power’ in its intent to worship God. It is true that many of us have worshipped power in the name of honoring God. Yet when we attribute absolute power, we see ourselves in a dilemma because if we worship God because of God’s almightiness, the god we serve could be an idol. Serving such a god indicates that if God is not powerful, we might not worship Him. The question haunts us, then, ‘do we worship God or power?’ The first step out of this dilemma is to acknowledge that the concept of absolute ‘power’ is meaningless, since only someone with that kind of power could understand
what that means and this disqualifies us. Because this is the case, we could neither verify nor falsify the assertion that God possesses this kind of power. The second step out of this dilemma is to recognize that there are two kinds of power in our human experience. One includes elements of control, coercion, one-sidedness, dominant, independent, exclusive, distant and indifferent to human pain and suffering. The other one involves elements of respect and persuasion that makes people fearful and frozen in actualizing their human potential. The latter is the affable power that enables people to maximize their potential at their own pace, while retaining their own identity. The life and death of Jesus indicates to us that God’s power is affable or, to put it in another way, God is ‘strong’ rather than powerful and that strength is based in truthfulness in character, not force. Hence, his name being ‘I am that I am” like in Exodus 3:14 and later Jesus in John 18: 1-6. The life of Jesus was full of the essential nature of God. It sustained him in the face of evil, rejection, humiliation, and death on the cross.
24
Jesus showed us the image of the God of truth, involved in human suffering sorrow and grief, enduring the human consequences of our sin that comes back resurrected to continue loving those that rejected him. That is the divine strength that flows from the character of God. Jesus changes the idolatrous image of the powerfully controlling God, distant and hierarchic, for the vulnerable, truthful God that experienced human affliction and pain. The God that becomes our friend and assumes our own flesh announces an end to false image of god of all dominion and instead shows us the face of the truthful God, of strength and love as essence of divine character. That is what we celebrated recently in the Resurrection, and that is message of the Gospel of Jesus the Christ. Rev. ISAÍAS 46:5
A quien me asemejáis, y me igualáis, y me compararéis...
L

Planning and saving strategies for women
A
► Make it a priority to deduct funds from every paycheck and automatically invest them in your employer-sponsored retirement plan. Contribute the maximum amount allowed. Please note that a periodic investment plan does not assure a profit or protect against a loss in declining markets. ► If your employer offers matching contributions, take full advantage of them. ► Consider contributing to an individual retirement account (IRA) to supplement your employer-sponsored retirement plan, and purchasing tax-deferred annuities. The sooner you start, the more time you’ll have to benefit from compounding of any earnings. ► When investing, keep in mind that the sooner you need to access your savings, the more conservative you need to be with how you invest. If you don’t plan on retiring for a long time, you can consider taking on more risk.
t this point in your life, it may be tempting to put off planning and saving for retirement because you have other financial commitments. This can be a costly mistake. Consistently contributing just a little amount to a retirement account can potentially make a huge difference over time. Women are often the caregivers of their families and may have more career interruptions. Also, women have traditionally made less money than men, which means they may need to save more in a shorter period of time than men to meet their savings goals. The following tips can help women—and men—with their long-term financial plan and savings strategy
Examine your financial objectives When creating a financial strategy, begin with your short-term goals— those you want to achieve over the next few years—followed by your long-term goals, such as saving for retirement or to pay off a mortgage. Consider setting aside three to six months of savings in an emergency fund. Reduce as much of your credit card and other high-rate debt as possible. After you have established your short-term goals, you can focus more on investing to pursue your long-term objectives.
Prepare for the unexpected The right combination of life, disability and long-term care insurance can help protect your hard-earned savings. Note that because women generally have longer life spans, they are more likely to need more care than men over their retirement years. Whatever your financial goals may be, consider speaking with a financial professional who can help you evaluate your financial needs and goals, and work with you to implement an investment strategy.
Implement a sound savings strategy Once you’ve established your goals, the next step is building your savings.

Planificación y estrategias de ahorro para mujeres
E

-Rob Qno-
