Stone Oak’s Donation & Dumping Event By Meg Lorente, Property Manager

Thank you Stone Oak for making our first Donation & Dumping event a huge success! On Saturday, May 10, 2014, close to one hundred of you took the opportunity to clean out your closets and garages! The City of San Antonio’s Dial-a-Trailer Program provided a free dump trailer for large items, and Arms of Hope charity brought a truck for any donations. The event ran from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the Property Owners Association parking lot at 19210 Huebner Road. Residents chose whether to donate their items, or if unsalvageable, dump them in the dump trailer. Old pool furniture, spa covers, tree limbs, bags of leaves, lighting fixtures and electronics, old water heaters - even a small sofa - were properly disposed of and taken to the dump. In addition, the generosity of our Stone Oak community was overwhelming as the Arms of Hope truck was filled with clothing, furniture, sports equipment, and more. They commented if the event has run much longer, they would have to call for another truck!

of the year. Some suggestions included to perhaps have a hazardous waste collection option, or even a shredding truck. Please know our intent is to help the community, and we will explore options while keeping cost at a minimum. We would also like to thank our generous landlord, Mike Espensen, for supporting this endeavor, as well as our recent Rain Barrel Event. In addition, a big thank you to our Neighborhood Representative Committee for spreading the word among their communities. Working together we can continue to ensure Stone Oak remains the wonderful community it is! Please continue to watch our website at www. stoneoakpoa.com for upcoming news!

Due to the success of this event, and the request by many residents to please offer this service to the community again in the future, we are certain to be scheduling another soon - perhaps before the end

Stone Oak Landscaping Update

By John Kiser, Stone Oak POA Board Member & Certified Master Naturalist Is this another giant Texas fire ant hill??? No... it is simply another dump truck load of organic compost that SOPOA is applying to our 51 acres of islands in Stone Oak. This is the third year we have spread organic compost on our islands and it has proved to be an enormous benefit to not only the plants and turf, but also contributes to the health of the soil.....overall benefit....REDUCED WATER REQUIREMENTS to keep the trees, shrubs, roses, and plants HEALTHY!!! Hats off to our Aesthetics Committee, and our partners: New Earth Compost, Greenlawn, and our SOPOA Grounds Maintenance Crew. The Church of Latter Day Saints has been very generous again this year in providing space for staging bulk quantities of compost at their lot on Hardy Oak across from the Temple, which has enabled the compost spreading crews to transport manageable quantities of compost

Stone Oak - May 2014 - Vol 19 No 5

to the smaller islands on Evans Road, Canyon Golf, and parts of Hardy Oak. Transporting these smaller quantities of compost helps reduce the potential hassles, and traffic hazards, of handling dump truck loads of compost on these smaller islands. Also, you may have noticed some orange cones on the ends of some of the islands on Evans Road. We are moving forward on our irrigation upgrade system, and these cones are the result of our maintenance crew’s efforts to locate the irrigation control lines that run under the street. Our new two wire system, when completed, will allow our maintenance team to closely monitor water usage remotely from our maintenance facility. This is just another one of our water conservation projects that not only benefits Stone Oak, but lets us also help focus on water conservation in our entire community.

Girl Scouts Gaze into Their Daddy’s Eyes Submitted by: Risa Weinberger Girl Scout Volunteer

It was a night of music and stars as kindergarten thru 8th grade Girl Scouts spent an enchanted evening with their fathers at the annual Bush Lopez Service Unit Father Daughter Gala Dance. Dressed to the nines in formal attire or Roaring 20’s Flapper outfits to go with the “Great Gatsby” theme, girls and their favorite men arrived to a dazzling décor at the Holy Trinity Banquet Hall on April 25. With almost 300 people in attendance, the room was full of laughter, fun, and merriment. Girls and their fathers dined on a catered dinner by Feed Back Catering. They danced the night away to music from the 80’s, 90’s and today. During a break from the dancing, the girls and dads were entertained by a special surprise visitor. Ricky G., opening act for Zendaya in May, prepared a short set for the girls to enjoy. He also spent time signing autographs and taking pictures with his

young fans. The girls were thrilled to have him perform during this special night. Even the dads seemed to enjoy the mini concert. As the night wound down, worn out dancers headed for the door asking if there would be another dance next year. The answer----of course! The annual Father Daughter Gala Dance is one of the most popular Girl Scout events for the Bush Lopez Service Unit. Both girls and dads look forward to this “date night” every year. This huge undertaking would not be possible without the help from Girl Scout troop leaders, parents, the staff at Holy Trinity Banquet Hall and all the dads who come back year after year with their daughters.
